IN THE WAKE OF PANDEMIC RECOVERY,
2022 PROVED TO BE AN EXTRAORDINARY YEAR TO GO BEYOND OUR LIMITS AT NPOWER. Unprecedented individual giving, ground-breaking research, participation in a White House workforce summit, and innovative approaches to programs made this an incredible year of expansion, influence, and impact. It was a year in which we began with some of the lowest unemployment numbers in decades, only to end the year with mass layoffs in the tech sector. Yet the need for qualified entry-level talent, along with those with advanced training and credentials, continued to be in demand and NPower trainees were ready to explore every opportunity presented before them in 2022. With the current economic realities, it is more important than ever to connect veterans, their spouses, and young people from underserved communities to quality recession-proof jobs. We had some incredible wins this year that helped us do just that and so much more. We added new program approaches and solutions that captured the needs of our students, influenced the way companies approach hiring non-traditional, diverse talent, and elevated the experience of our partners by breaking ground in new markets. And it all predicated on four pillars of NPower 3.0, our strategic foundation that builds toward a future beyond limits:
4 | Our Mission
SEAMLESS TRANSITIONS
EXPANDED LEARNING PATHWAYS
Our approach is expansive from supporting military members separating from service transitioning to the civilian workforce to unemployed young adults securing their first full-time position, we provide employers with developing diverse, entry-level talent pipelines, and emphasizing apprenticeships as a way for NPower graduates to obtain the necessary on-the-job skills and training to thrive in tech careers. Our participation at the National Cyber Workforce and Education Summit at the White House resulted in productive discussions and action around opportunities to build pipelines for historically untapped talent from underserved and diverse communities to gain prosperous employment without a four-year degree.
In March 2022, Mackenzie Scott made a $15 million gift, the largest individual donation in NPower history to advance our strategic priorities including continuing to expand equitable pathways to opportunities in the tech sector for young adults and veterans from underserved communities.
ADVANCING SYSTEMS CHANGE The Equation for Equality report was released in March 2022, as an original research effort backed by the Command Shift coalition that unveils a previously overlooked, viable talent pipeline of women of color ready for careers in tech. The research has identified over 2,500,000 women of color, who are considered skill-similar, tech-eligible talent.
SCALE AND SUSTAINABILITY In the fall of 2022, NPower received funding from USAA and Harris County to expand our work in Texas into San Antonio and Harris County (Houston). In the coming year, NPower also plans to launch the SkillBridge program in partnership with the Department of Defense at Joint Base Myer Henderson Hall in Virginia. With new training programs launching in Raleigh and Dayton next year, individuals from these often overlooked communities will now have access to high-quality tech jobs. NPower is on track to expand to eight new markets and serve 73,000 cumulatively by 2030.
The success of NPower in 2022 could not happen without the tremendous efforts put forth by our staff, partners, volunteers, funders, and stakeholders, all of whom have enormous impact on our trainees, alumni, and their families. We are helping to create pathways to prosperity and more diverse workplace environments by placing our graduates into family sustaining jobs that ultimately have enormous impacts on communities and our nation. Let this year show us how we are always capable of reaching beyond our limits to help those we serve enter, advance, and lead the workforce of the future. 336% AVERAGE SALARY INCREASE FOR NPOWER GRADUATES
Despite high inflation, market volatility, and mass tech layoffs, NPower graduates and alumni were more than ready to go beyond limits and secured positions at some of the nation’s leading employers, including Citi, Accenture, SpaceX, Google, and Northrop Grumman. Fifty-five percent of these graduates did not hold a college degree and, when securing employment, earned significantly more, going from an average income of $15,755 to $51,719.
NPower continues to help graduates and alumni push beyond their limits to become future leaders and innovators in the tech industry.

BEYOND MEASURE COMMAND SHIFT AND THE EQUATION FOR EQUALITY RESEARCH REPORT On March 24, 2022, The Equation for Equality report was released as an original research effort backed by the Command Shift Coalition, a national consortium of women and allies who advocate for strategies that invest in and inspire the advancement of young women of color in tech careers. Command Shift is committed to achieving 10% women of color in tech in 10 years by advocating and guiding corporations to expand their hiring and recruitment strategies. The report unveils a previously overlooked, viable talent pipeline of women of color ready for careers in tech. Authored by Lightcast, the report focused on a brand-new approach to sourcing, recruiting, upskilling, and supporting women of color with many of the skills that overlap with tech job requirements. The research was supported by founding partner Citi Foundation, which provided vision, resources, and unwavering support for this effort. NPower staff, students, and alumni also generously contributed their time and insights into the project. The findings shatter the long-held notion that there is a lack of skilled women of color ready for tech.
This report uses a measure called the skill similarity score to express the overlap between a job pair’s requirements, such as education, experience, training, skills and knowledge, as a numeric value between 0 and 1. Job pairs that have a similarity score of 1 share the exact same requirements, while job pairs with a similarity score of 0 have no requirements in common. To arrive at the concept of a numerical similarity score, Lighcast combines data from job postings with data from job-characteristic survey results in the O*NET database. The skill similarity score measures the possibility of transitioning from one occupation to another.

Doubling the percentage of women of color hired into tech could put the industry at equity. Reviewing skill similarity and recognizing areas of overlap between occupations is helpful for career coaching, to make the case to women of color who would not otherwise consider tech jobs that they have a future in tech. Skill similarity also helps with student attraction, since existing skills are celebrated and reinforced, and new training feels more like an extension of their previous career as opposed to starting over entirely. The research has identified over 2,500,000 women of color, who are considered skill-similar, tech-eligible talent. Close to 500 feasible non-tech to tech career transitions for women of color have been identified.
Women of color are severely underrepresented in tech jobs. Of the 4,700,000 tech workers in the U.S. today, Black, Latinx and American Indian women make up only 5% (that’s 225,000)
THE EQUATION FOR EQUALITY There is an equation that can be used to benchmark diversity in the tech sector against this population of skill-similar, tech-eligible talent. The report uses a measure called the skill similarity score to index the overlap between job requirements (knowledge, education, skills, training) and the skills and credentials of women of color tech-eligible talent. As it stands today,
250,000 women of color would have to be hired into tech roles to fill the equality gap.

BEYOND BREAKTHROUGHS TRAUMA-INFORMED CARE In 2022, NPower enacted a Trauma-Informed program delivery approach to better serve our young adults and military-connected populations. We integrated concepts of trauma-informed care into our day-to-day interactions with trainees, program best practices, and policies to contribute to a strengths-based approach that will support better outcomes for our trainees.
WHAT IS TRAUMA? Trauma can result from both systemic and interpersonal experiences, such as individual trauma like combat experience or systemic trauma like sexism. NPower encourages its partners to uphold our trauma-informed approach by educating themselves on NPower’s mission and values and the populations of trainees we serve. This starts by asking questions about the trainees they will be working with and understanding the common experiences and life circumstances of our populations served. Partners work to consider their relationship to trainees in terms of their own identification with the population, the power and privilege they may hold, and their lived experiences. There is so much we can do together to provide a trauma-informed approach. Get to know our principles and ask how you can implement trauma-informed care when you partner with NPower.
14 | Beyond Breakthroughs
1
PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL SAFETY Physical and Emotional Safety focuses on creating an environment conducive to growth, development, and freedom from re-traumatization triggers. It ensures that the physical and emotional safety of trainees and staff is preserved to promote the best program outcomes.
3
5
NPower implements its trauma-informed approach through five key principles:
2
TRUSTWORTHINESS Trustworthiness centers on relationship building and mutual respect. It is the process of maximizing trust, ensuring clear expectations, and providing consistent boundaries.
CHOICE Choice is about self-determination. This means making trainee choice and control a priority within programmatic confines.
4
EMPOWERMENT Empowerment is providing a realistic sense of hope for the future. It is making the trainee experience and skill-building a priority.
COLLABORATION Collaboration centers on doing with our trainees vs. doing to or for. It is the process of sharing power with trainees, recognizing and acknowledging their lived experiences and working together.

VETERANS AND NPOWER
A SNAPSHOT OF VETERAN EMPLOYMENT NUMBERS IN 2022: Veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan War era make up the largest portion of the veteran workforce, representing almost half of the 8.5 million veterans employed. Unemployment rates for white, Black, Asian, and Hispanic veterans—male and female—fell and were the same or lower than their nonveteran counterparts in 2021.
It comes as no surprise that the professional skills, like time management and agile thinking learned through military service are a great draw for hiring managers. Resiliency, determination, problem solving, and discipline are just a few of the skills of note in veteran applicants and employees, often over their civilian peers. Now more than ever, the nation’s top employers, including those in the technology sector, are taking note of the strengths veterans bring to the table. On average NPower veteran graduates land employment earning annual starting salaries over $50,000 and veterans are more likely to return to NPower to earn specialized certifications in cybersecurity or cloud computing. STUDENT SPOTLIGHT PORFIRIO LOPEZ U.S. ARMY VETERAN NPower Texas | Tech Fundamentals Spring 2022 Compliance Risk Management Analyst, Citi For Porfirio Lopez, joining the Army was a great decision. The challenge, the discipline, and the camaraderie made him feel part of something greater than himself. As he thought about the future beyond the military, he considered a career in law enforcement, but it didn’t quite go to plan. Porfirio was always interested in computers and reached out to a military friend to talk through his options. He was worried that he may be too late in the game to begin a career in tech, but the conversation turned to NPower and Porfirio felt hopeful. He decided to apply to the Tech Fundamentals program in Dallas and was immediately accepted. While at NPower, Porfirio learned the computer basics, and at the same time, acquired the professional development needed to land a role in tech. After an internship, Porfirio landed a position as a Compliance Risk Management Analyst at Citi. He looks forward to his new career and the many opportunities ahead.

BEYOND EXCELLENCE
YOUNG ADULTS AT NPOWER
The Great Resignation trend may have led employers to believe that young adults are not as loyal as generations before them. But a 2022 Pew Research Study* pointed to the fact that 44% of young adults today have been on the job with their current employers at least three years, a tenure that is as long as young adults over the past four decades. Young adults today are also electing to avoid college in the hundreds of thousands since before the pandemic, with many choosing to take jobs amid fears of tuition and debt. With undergraduate college enrollment dropping 8% from 2019 to 2022, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics noted this as the steepest decline in the college-going rate since 2018 and that it could worsen labor shortage in many career fields, including information technology. This is why there has never been a more critical time for NPower to offer young adults from underserved communities the opportunity to receive the training and credentials needed to begin thriving careers in tech without the expense of a four-year degree and move into jobs where they can advance and lead the tech force of the future. The growing field of viable, diverse candidates also upholds NPower’s mission and results.
In 2022, 39% of graduates were women and 70% identified as Black or Hispanic. Employers see the value of this new and innovative pipeline of non-traditional tech talent from diverse backgrounds. The pipeline into NPower is also growing, particularly among young adults graduating from high school and looking for new ways to enter the workforce. The NPower-Urban Alliance partnership empowers young adults to become economically self-sufficient after high school and access middle-skills jobs in tech or tech-adjacent fields, while supporting employers with developing a diverse, entrylevel talent pool. NPower graduates in 2022 pushed beyond the limits of a struggling economy and rising costs of living to complete the program and take advantage of job placement assistance that is leading to incredible tech opportunities. Graduates are landing positions at the nation’s leading employers, including Citi, Accenture, and World Wide Technology, and pursuing careers in tech support, robotics, and risk management. This speaks to the tenacity, intelligence, and excellence of NPower graduates, who are getting the attention they deserve and serving employers in critical roles that are vital to the health and future of the tech industry.

new skills-based pathways to cybersecurity jobs via nontraditional training. The group examined the opportunity to build pipelines for historically untapped talent, including underserved and diverse communities, to reach jobs that often pay well and do not require a four-year degree. In November, NPower Texas Executive Director, Jonathan Pride, attended an event at the White House to represent NPower in marking the end of the Cybersecurity Apprenticeship Sprint. The event was part of National Apprenticeship Week and the celebration of the 85th Anniversary of the National Apprenticeship Act, and concluded with a signing ceremony, all to demonstrate the overwhelming potential and success of promoting Registered Apprenticeships. NPower Texas Executive Director, Jonathan Pride, joined Department of Labor Deputy Secretary, Julie Su, and other key senior White House and Agency officials to mark the end of the Cybersecurity Apprenticeship Sprint at the White House.
Given that NPower is a national nonprofit committed to advancing race and gender equity in the tech industry, including in the field of cybersecurity, we are proud to assist the White House in fulfilling its cyber workforce objectives, which are in alignment with NPower’s mission. . . . An invitation to the NPower Gala in 2018 turned into a lifechanging opportunity for Herb Hofmann, Vice-President of Information Technology at Loews Corporation. “A contact of mine invited me to the NPower event, and I really enjoyed hearing about their mission,” said Herb. “In 2019, my company had some equipment to donate, and I contacted NPower, but it turned out it wasn’t compatible. I figured another opportunity may come up down the line.” In 2020, Herb joined the SIM NY Metro Outreach Team through the Society for Information Management (SIM), a professional organization of over 5,000 technology leaders. The group wanted to create a giveback opportunity
“
for SIM NY members and Herb thought NPower may be a good fit. He was connected to Alumni Engagement Manager, Amanda Aguilar, and that led to mentoring and coaching opportunities in Harlem and Brooklyn, and later a Career Day for students in 2021. After the event, a student reached out to Herb about the experience and shared what a difference it made in his outlook. Herb has found one-on-one mentoring to be one of the most valuable experiences of the program. It has allowed him to work with the students directly and experience their knowledge and drive first-hand. Now with over two years of volunteering with NPower under his belt, Herb encourages others in tech to reach out and get involved.
A lot of people right now are seeking a way to give back but are uncertain as to what that might look like. The best way to start is through the NPower coaching events. It’s just a 90-minute conversation and the opportunity to meet and coach the students. If you go through that one experience, it leads to another. When you give back, it feels good, and no one regrets the experience.

New York The Hearst Foundations provided valuable funding for Tech Fundamentals program in New York City, which last year supported IT training, wraparound social services, professional development, paid internships, and ultimately job placements for more than 200 underserved young adults. NPower is grateful for a valuable ongoing partnership with Tiger Foundation, for its guidance, support, and help in making Tech Fundamentals in NYC a growing community outreach program with graduates earning well over $50,000 annually upon program completion.
Texas NPower is now serving 4 of the largest cities in Texas. With a $1,800,000 two-year grant from Harris County, NPower has launched a new location serving Harris County residents. Thanks to $1,000,000 in support from USAA, NPower has opened in San Antonio. With generous support from the Rainwater Charitable Foundation and United Way of Tarrant County, we opened an office in Fort Worth to serve more residents in Tarrant County. Texas Workforce Commission Apprenticeship Texas funding has equipped NPower to engage employers and expand our existing U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship Program.
NPower is pleased to share that support from The Prudential Foundation helped 200 veteran trainees and young adults from underserved communities participate in the New Jersey Tech Fundamentals program in Newark. This program helps participants gain marketable job skills – including soft skills – and the knowledge and confidence to secure full-time careers in the tech sector.

BEYOND INSPIRING RASHEDA WALKER U.S. ARMY RESERVES NPower Texas | Texas Tech Fundamentals Spring 2022 Information Technology Apprentice, Citi Rasheda’s story https://youtu.be/f7T86AohUaA
“
My plan for NPower was just to get a job. . . and some technical skills . . . but I entered into a program that has changed my life. A program that says we’re investing in you as a person. Like many others, Rasheda had felt the impact of the pandemic when she was laid off from a position she had been in for only six weeks. She realized she needed additional technical skills to survive in a tumultuous economy. She needed to reinvent herself to secure a career with high-quality growth opportunities and a chance to create a better life for herself and her son.
26 | beyond inspiring
As an U.S. Army Reservist and a mother, Rasheda wanted an alternative path other than a four-year college program in which to obtain these technical skills. Her search for a different upskilling route led her to a local job fair where she discovered NPower. Upon enrolling in the program, she saw immediate benefits and knew this life-changing decision was worth it.
DASHAWN BROWNLEY NPower Maryland | Tech Fundamentals, Cybersecurity Tech Fundamentals Spring 2022, Cybersecurity Fall 2022 Information Technology Help Desk Analyst, Under Armour Dashawn’s story https://youtu.be/fhv0jl9HvN8
“
Thank you for making NPower possible, you’re helping young individuals get to the next level for their family and to provide for that family. It’s not just a gift, it’s bigger — it’s something way bigger. As a high school student with high hopes for an athletic future, Dashawn’s path was redirected when he discovered he was going to be a father. After a string of unsuccessful jobs, he decided to enroll in an IT training program that helped him secure an entry-level IT position. Motivated by his desire to provide financial stability for his family, Dashawn searched for additional technical training and credentialing opportunities that would help position him
for a high-wage career. He discovered and enrolled in NPower Maryland’s Tech Fundamentals Program and credits the quality training, the instructor support, the professional development, and the career guidance to what made the difference in his journey. He recently decided to develop his tech career in cybersecurity and enrolled in the advanced training program and cannot wait to utilize all he has learned at NPower.
BRANDON FULLWOOD NPower Michigan | Tech Fundamentals Spring 2022 Developer Apprentice, Aptiv
“
My time at NPower was a life changing experience. If you give your all to this program, then there is no way they will let you fail but you have to take that step. Brandon Fullwood is a recent NPower graduate of Tech Fundamentals program in Michigan and understands the power of investing in NPower and graduates like him. The husband and father needed to find a career to support his growing family. Brandon had an interest in IT and was referred by his cousin, an NPower alumnus. When considering the program, he and his wife decided
it would be best to quit his job and take on the role as stay-at-home dad while completing his NPower training. It was a short-term sacrifice he says was worth it ten times over. After graduation he landed an apprenticeship at automotive technology company, Aptiv, and is now expanding into cybersecurity for the tech company.

KATIE HORTON NPower Missouri | Tech Fundamentals Fall 2022 Information Technology Service Desk, Stifel Financial Corp.
“
The program was challenging because I did not know much about the tech field or computers, however, there were great instructors to support me along the way. I hope to continue in the Information Technology field utilizing the certifications I’ve completed during the program. Prior to NPower, Katie was struggling to find a career path that was fulfilling and that would allow her to build the life she had always envisioned for herself. In her pursuit, Katie had been recommended to apply for the NPower program by a friend who had completed the training and was very happy with how it went for them. Katie had some difficulty getting
accustomed to the curriculum as she did not have much experience with the tech field, however, she was supported by some amazing instructors who guided her throughout her entire journey. Since completing the program, Katie is now looking forward to forging the life she dreams of and is excited for where her newfound career path takes her.
RANDIELL TEJADA NPower New York | Tech Fundamentals Fall 2022 IT Apprentice, Mastercard
“
The program has shaped me into an aspiring IT specialist that I can be proud of. Randiell’s journey into tech started with the firm belief that technology can be used to help local communities stay connected and transform into safe spaces for everyone. While working for a local grocery store, Randiell yearned for a way to break into the tech industry but knew that to land a position in the field, he would need more experience and the proper certifications. NPower had piqued his interest not only for its connections to big corporations in the tech world, but for NPower’s mission to serve
28 | beyond inspiring
underprivileged students like himself. Although joining NPower would add to his heavy plate of responsibilities, Randiell was committed to meet and surpass any challenges. He regularly sought advice from NPower staff about professionalism and put those words into practice. Randiell attributes a lot of that growth to placement professional development sessions and the coaching of dedicated NPower volunteers.
JESSICA LUNA-MIRANDA NPower California | Tech Fundamentals Fall 2022 Associate Technology Support Analyst, Deloitte
“
NPower has given me the skill sets, support, and confidence I need to continue growing, reach my goals, and in due time help others break into the tech world as well. Born in Mexico City and raised in the U.S. foster care system, Jessica was inspired from a young age to pursue a career in social services and give back to the system that raised her. While her job working with at-risk youth in foster care was rewarding, she had stifled an interest in tech due to lack of guidance and support. She felt like she had settled for a career because it was what she knew best. Jessica believes finding NPower has completely
changed her life trajectory. She worked full-time while attending NPower, spending many sleepless nights staying up late studying to make her tech dreams a reality. Despite many personal challenges and setbacks, Jessica not only completed the NPower program and reached her certification goals, but fulfilled her goal of moving to the Bay Area and now has a job as an Associate Technology Support Analyst with Deloitte.
JOBERTO CASSEUS NPower New Jersey | Tech Fundamentals Fall 2022 Technical Sales Representative, Exteros, Inc.
“
Based on my NPower experience, I’ve gained more communication, interpersonal and tech skills. The program provided me with opportunities and gave me the tech skills and support from NPower staff and alumni. Growing up in Haiti, Joberto was always interested in technology, but at the time it wasn’t seen as a useful skill. After moving to the U.S. and eventually gaining citizenship, he rekindled his passion for tech but wasn’t sure how to get started. Prior to joining NPower, Joberto was heavily involved in community service with his church “Redeemer” and worked at Beloved Community Charter High School as a security guard/intern for the IT help desk team. He decided to enroll with NPower based on reviews he had
read and believed it would be a great asset and a way for him to invest in his future. He thrived in the program and after graduating he landed a position at Exteros, Inc. a startup in the tech space offering computer vision and AI to provide real-time person by person traffic, demographics, and interaction data for cities, commercial real estate, shopping centers, and retail. He plans to continue his education this fall.

NPOWER GALA 2022
INSPIRE. INVOLVE. INVEST. Tuesday, October 11, 2022 | Cipriani Wall Street
The NPower Gala was back in person on Tuesday, October 11, 2022. Held at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, the evening was truly magical and raised over $1.9 million to support NPower. WCBS-TV anchor, Maurice DuBois, hosted the evening that inspired attendees with all the ways NPower create pathways to technology careers for veterans and young adults from underserved communities. We were deeply inspired by our honoree, Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud. His motivating fireside chat had the room captivated. The evening’s special tribute to Anne Chow, Former CEO of AT&T Business, and co-author of the book The Leader’s Guide to Unconscious Bias: How to Reframe Bias, Cultivate Connection, and Create High-Performing Teams, had us all eager to advocate and lead the way for greater diversity in tech. Kelem Butts, Director of Charitable Operations at AT&T, brought even more excitement to the room when he announced a $1.6 million gift from AT&T to launch Community Help Desks in St. Louis, Missouri and Dallas, Texas. And NPower Graduate, Cameron Clarke, told his powerful story about how life can change in an instant. He shared his life-changing decision to join NPower, and how determination and defying the odds have led him to the most incredible and inspired future.
