OUR STORY

NPower is a nonprofit rooted in the community and committed to advancing race and gender equity in the tech industry through skills training, real-world experience, support, and mentorships. The organization has helped young adults from underserved communities and veterans move from poverty to the middle class by training them with a range of tech skills and placing them in quality jobs.

Students who enter our free training programs earn industry-recognized certifications and graduate with the competencies of an IT professional with one to two years of experience. NPower also places students in paid internships and apprenticeships with corporate and nonprofit organizations. Eighty percent of NPower graduates get a fulltime job or continue their education. NPower is a vital solution towards bridging the national talent gap that exists in the high-growth technology industry.

COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER: DREW SIMONIS

As CISO at Juniper, Drew leads the corporate information security team, which includes setting infosec strategy, standards and policies for the company, security engineering and architecture, corporate incident response, security awareness and security and IT compliance. Drew brings over two decades of security experience in industries as diverse as telco, high tech, DoD and financial services in companies large and small. Prior to joining Juniper, Drew served as Deputy CISO at Hewlett Packard Enterprise where he led and guided significant technology and program maturity gains including embracing cloud native security in support of HPE’s company transformation, adoption of a threat-based approach for security operations, embracing quantitative risk management and streamlining policy and compliance. Drew also sponsored approaches to recruitment and training that improved diversity while uplifting the core security skills of the organization.

Prior to joining HPE, Drew spent eight years as the CISO for Willis Group Holdings (now Willis Towers Watson). Drew is a frequent presenter on the evolution of cyber security and has co-authored several books on security technology and architecture and articles on cyber organizational paradigms.

I am an energetic and driven individual with willingness to continue to learn and grow. I am currently a Senior Service & Support Tier Specialist with a proven track record w oander 10 years of experience in the IT field. I hold a BA and have also obtained the CompTIA A+ and Security+ Certificates. NPower has had a tremendous impact in my life. Before NPower, I felt stagnant at my current role with no room for growth, working with proprietary software and hardware. Since joining NPower, I have met great people and mentors and advisors that will help me along my journey. I have been able to take the Cyber Security course and pass the Security+ exam. Prior to NPower, I was having a difficult time getting my foot in the door to most tech companies. I never heard back from any of the jobs I applied to, but thanks to the training I received at NPower along with their valuable resources and partnerships, my opportunities have grown. The Advanced Cybersecurity program has been challenging but in the end, it has been very rewarding. Before discovering NPower, I was working in retail for minimum wage. The realization that I was passionate about entering the IT field became more and more apparent to me. I have had an honor be a Helpdesk analyst for places like the State of Maryland, University of Maryland, and the Under Armour World Headquarters. I am looking to forward my education in Cyber and Cloud security after graduating this December. I have managed to obtain my Security+, Google support certification and I am currently working on getting my IBM Cybersecurity certification from Coursera. I have also been awarded for leadership at the first annual NPower Maryland Technology Leaders Salute Luncheon. NPower has been nothing but amazing to me they have gave me a voice that I didn’t know that I had and has given me confidence to be the best I can be. Before NPower I was looking for stability within tech, I felt like I was going from job to job and finding ways to get into Cybersecurity but I didn’t know what route to take so I made a choice to reach out to NPower and continue to do what I love.. After graduation, I plan on getting my first Cyber role hopefully as a SOC analyst. Most importantly, I would like to be a 3-time NPower Graduate. I can say NPower really opened up doors for me from being a regular job hunter to a professional job hunter. I did not just earn certificates through them but I learned different techniques on how to present myself during job interviews. I am a highly analytical professional with 10 years of corporate experience, mostly working within IT departments and supporting IT professionals. I have a Bachelor of Science in accounting and an MBA in Finance. In between those degrees, I was on active duty in the U.S. Navy for five years, earning the Southwest Asia Service Medal for Gulf War deployment. I lived in Japan for six years, starting with the U.S. Navy and ending as an English teacher. Starting with the NPower IT Fundamentals course, this year I have obtained the following certifications: CompTIA ITF+, Google Coursera IT Support, and Google Coursera Project Manager. Enrollment in NPower advanced cybersecurity training has given me the opportunity to add the CompTIA Security+ certification, and progress toward the Google Coursera Python Programming certification. Following a combat tour in Iraq, I was honorably discharged and worked in law enforcement for 8.5 years before getting injured on the job. With a career change in the cards, I came across NPower while with an old friend who was currently enrolled in the Tech Fundamentals Program. With a bit of encouragement from my wife, I applied. What NPower gave me during my time with them was every ounce of energy I gave them. They showed me that not only were they true to their mission, but also were willing to do all they could to help people achieve their goals so long as we are willing to do the same. Upon completing this course, I plan to use the skills and knowledge gained to migrate from a support role to a career in cloud. This will allow me to better support my family in the future.

However, in the last 8 or 9 years I have not been able to afford training for the IT skills I need in the everchanging IT landscape. I came across NPower in the VA weekly newsletter email I receive. I had my doubts about whether I would be able to attend the NPower program while working full time. However, I worked a 12-hour day to make my schedule accommodate the program and my employer. The staff of NPower has been really great as they helped me learn hands on in the AWS labs and prepare for each certification. Our graduates launch tech jobs with an average starting salary of $41,000–$60,000 and are positioned to advance their career path, enabling them to earn more than their peers in lower-wage jobs. Higher earning potential is the key to breaking generational cycles of poverty, positioning our students and their families to achieve long-term economic success.

Through partner and tech industry collaboration, our free training model is a workforce development solution for the future. In today’s economy, over 50% of all jobs require some degree of technology and digital skill. We prepare untapped, diverse talent to fill the number of technology-oriented jobs that will increase in the U.S. to 13 million by 2025, according to a recent Microsoft Data Science report that estimates that digital job capacity. Our graduates of over 4,000 veterans and young adults are hired at over 2000 companies and nonprofits as interns and full-time employees.

NPower is on a mission to create pathways to economic prosperity by launching digital careers for young adults and military veterans from underserved communities. Part of this goal is our ‘40 by 22’ initiative, which aims to advance more young women of color in tech careers. This initiative is supported by the Citi Foundation’s Pathways to Progress initiative.
