ALUMNI SPEAKER HECTOR NAVARRO

NPower California Tech Fundamentals Class 6 IT Security Analyst, Robert Half

I joined the Marine Reserves to serve my country and go to school. After 9/11, I was called to active duty for Operation Enduring Freedom and was attached to the 1st Marine Division for the Invasion of Iraq. Since returning home, I earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration. from San Jose State University and worked as a warehouse and quality manager.

Growing up in Silicon Valley made me fascinated with IT, prompting me to earn a master’s in information systems. However, without hands-on experience, it was very difficult to get a job. NPower gave me the opportunity to receive an A+ certification and an internship—the perfect opportunity to get my career started. Words cannot explain how grateful I am for the people at NPower. I hope to make it to the top one day and reach back to support the next NPower generation.

INTERNSHIP  Deloitte JOB IN THE MILITARY  Chaplain DECORATIONS  National Defense Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Army Commendation Medal

KATE ALBERS US Army Served 10 Years

Before the military, I completed an MA in counseling and worked in public relations and as a counselor in private practice. From 2012-2014, I was mobilized by the Army Reserve and served as a program manager and Family Life Chaplain for the 63rd Regional Readiness Division in Mountain View. While managing this program, I gained skills in project management, business, and corporate training. Afterward, I was a counselor for the VA where I treated combat veterans and survivors of military sexual trauma, helping them with their adjustment to civilian life. While this was worthwhile work, I recognized I was only using a portion of my skill-set. I decided to pursue an MBA and also applied to NPower. The program prepared me to solve problems at the intersection of people, business, and technology.

INTERNSHIP  Lawrence Berkeley Labs I am the spouse of an active duty Coast Guard member. While supporting my spouse during his deployments, I completed a second master’s degree in sustainable environmental resources management through an accelerated joint program between the University of Malta and James Madison University. I have extensive experience in independent research, analysis, creative problem solving, and time management. I discovered NPower’s Tech Fundamentals program while attending the “Hiring Our Heroes” job fair at the San Francisco Giants stadium. Because of relocation, we often found ourselves with limited employment opportunities, so I was very excited that the program also considered military spouses. I have been interested in enhancing my skills with more in-depth knowledge of how the technology works and how I can be more than just a computer user. With my NPower training, I can accomplish this and continue to work in the world of high tech.

I entered the military in 2002 to take care of my family. I was a teenage father with a teenage wife and needed to figure out how to support them. In the Army, I worked as an information systems analyst and Army Recruiting Command. I managed all aspects of communication during both peace and wartime, serving two tours in Iraq and stationed in Germany for five years. After the Army, I received my associates of applied science in information technology. After junior college, I studied at ITT Tech to pursue a career in IT and work toward becoming a network engineer. In 2016 I moved to San Jose to pursue and take ahold of my career and aspirations. I learned about NPower through a veteran’s program in Menlo Park that helps them transition from military to civilian life and work. Through the veteran’s job training program, I was able to get a job at the VA Palo Alto division in the OI&T department and get customer service experience in the IT field. RONALD KENDALL US Coast Guard

Growing up, I spent a lot of time learning about and using computer hardware and software. Some of my relatives had figured I would go to college straight out of high school and get a degree and job in the IT field, but I ended up joining the Coast Guard when I was 17, after graduating high school. Serving my country and potentially saving lives called to me. After being honorably discharged, my career and education took a circuitous path, giving me several value-added skills, including a certificate in speech and communication. I was in a transitional period when NPower class instructor William Browning saw my resume on the Cal JOBS website while looking for veteran candidates that would be a good fit for NPower’s Tech Fundamentals. He invited me to interview for the class, and I recognized this as an excellent opportunity to officially get into a field I have always loved. I did what I needed to make it happen, including working a full-time job on top of commuting to class five days a week. Beyond this class, I will continue with networking and security.

I joined the military to follow in the footsteps of many family members, choosing the Air Force because my younger brother spoke so highly about this branch of service. My job in the Air Force helping people get better in an operating room setting was a humbling experience. Working in a hospital, I saw that technology was becoming more prevalent in our daily patient care. The future has a merging of medical care and technology, and I wanted to incorporate my experience with the information technology that NPower offers its students. I plan on building on my IT knowledge that NPower has started me with and I am so thankful that they are here to help so many different people from different areas of expertise.
