JORGE ACOSTA

Before NPower I pursued different undergraduate degrees, but due to financial problems, I could not complete a program. I’ve always had a passion for IT, but NPower drew me in with its focus on diversity and promise of exciting new professional opportunities. With NPower, I’ve cultivated existing skills like troubleshooting and learned entirely new ones in fields like networking. Through this life-changing journey, I’ve been able to broaden my scope of knowledge within the field of IT, gain new confidence in my expertise, and connect with people who share my passion. In the future, I hope to be able to use my knowledge of networking as a tool to improve communications between people.

25, Long Island

INTERNSHIP  Citi Before NPower I was working full time at a company that had growth opportunity but not in something that I had a passion for in the long term. I’ve always been fascinated by technology. NPower has an immense amount of resources available to young adults like myself who not only have a passion for technology but also have the eagerness for success. I have developed many technical skills while attending NPower, but most importantly, I have developed a strong sense of professional networking. My experience has been nothing that I expected—it has exceeded all my expectations and has opened numerous doors for me to start a career in a technology-related field. Next, I plan on starting a role in a financial institution where I can combine technology and business. My dream is to work for Goldman Sachs with a small team.

INTERNSHIP  NYC Department of Education Before NPower, my dream was to pursue a business career with the hopes of one day leading my own company. What drew me to NPower was the opportunity to expand myself and my IT knowledge to stand out in the job market. My experience at NPower has been nothing but sensational. I have appreciated the opportunity to practice networking with people. I would love to work for the MTA in a mid-size team.

INTERNSHIP  COPO Council of Peoples Organization I got into the IT field because I was passionate about technology and how fast it is growing in our community and era. Before I enrolled in NPower, I was working as a waiter in a restaurant. NPower has exposed me to the world of technology through site visits with major technology companies, guest speakers, and internship opportunities. In the long-term, I would love to be a part of a corporate organization or own a business. NPower gave me a step towards achieving that goal.

RAZAQ ANDREW 22, Brooklyn

INTERNSHIP  CBS Growing up, people always told me that I was tech savvy, but it wasn’t until recently that I decided to turn it into a career. I was working in retail, but I felt like I couldn’t achieve anything more there and needed a change. I worked my way up to management and decided it wasn’t something I wanted to keep pursuing in a career. The experience here was better than I could imagine, as I learned skills that will only benefit me in the future. At NPower, I developed a strong understanding of hardware and software skills while completing my A+. My next steps are to finish my Net+ and then look into getting my Sec+. We had an information security guest lecturer that drew my interest into the cybersecurity field. Long-term, I envision myself working in a place that is exciting with something to look forward to every time I wake up in the morning. Ideally, it would be in a place that includes my interest in baseball and video games.

Before NPower, I worked in several security jobs and didn’t know what I wanted to do. I became interested in IT since I grew up with technology and see its real potential. Throughout my time at NPower, I developed many skills, from professional networking to understanding what paths are available in the IT field. I was empowered and refreshed by coming to class and learning more about computers and tech. The environment at NPower felt like a second home where everyone has your back, and you only have to ask for help when you need it. After graduating from NPower, I plan to stretch my IT experience and work my way into a quality assurance position, then into a gaming company to achieve both my goals of becoming a software developer and graphic designer.

BRITTIN BILLINGS-MORE

Before NPower, I was a part-time life coach for children with autism and parttime desktop technician. I completed an internship with a bank, but they didn’t teach me technical terms. I was drawn into the IT field because there is always something new to learn. NPower has taught me how to problemsolve and communicate solutions effectively. When I first came here, I would struggle to explain an answer when the instructor would ask me. Now I can discuss things more in-depth with confidence. My dream job is to work with finance, information, and technology at a bank. I want to continue working on a GTI (global technology infrastructure) team.

23, Brooklyn

INTERNSHIP  NYC Department of Education What drew me into the IT field was the opportunity to grow within an industry. Before NPower, I had no direction and dreaded going to work, knowing that it offered no stability. My partner introduced me to a great friend of hers who enrolled in NPower at the Harlem location. Technology has been a passion of mine, but a path I have neglected. This program helped me realize how important technology is in all industries and showed me the personal aspect of solving tech problems. My long-term goals are to run my own tech company for the betterment of inner city communities and the youth. I’d like to learn with an opportunity at a nonprofit such as NPower, but my dream job is to work for a company that promotes excellent values, is family oriented, and can provide stability and growth throughout my career. A big team would be ideal but I know I’m versatile and a team player. I’m looking forward to providing a more than comfortable life for my daughter and my family.

Before NPower, I was on an unsuccessful job hunt and stumbled upon TEKsystems and a staff member told me I was unqualified even with years of experience. They referred me to three different nonprofits that would help me prepare for an IT career, and one was NPower. I was drawn to the promise of a guaranteed internship and a lucrative IT career, so I chose to pursue the program. Having a background in IT from the young age of 15, I thought there was nothing more I could learn when it comes to basic fundamentals. My opinion quickly shifted when I started to learn skills from industry leading employees. During site visits and guest lecturers, I gained insider information for interviewing along with IT tricks and tips. My next goal is to become an AWS solutions architect for Amazon and lead the team towards breakthroughs in Cloud computing. I thank NPower for helping me get my life back on track and teaching me the skills necessary to overcome my career challenge.

Getting an opportunity in the tech industry was difficult without any certifications or experience. All this has prepared me for my future role, working for a large organization that helps me develop and gain skills in cloud computing and management.

Before NPower, I struggled with figuring out my career path. I was attending university for computer science before needing to take a break. I knew I wanted to be part of the IT field but was not sure if being a software developer was really for me. I was referred to NPower through another nonprofit and have found it to be the best decision of my life. NPower has helped me learn how to market myself to potential employers and expand my network. I attained my A+ certification while also studying for my Network+. Along the line, I gained an interest in cybersecurity and hoped to join the next class. I have met so many people and forged life-long connections. In the future, I want to go back to university and finish my computer science degree. I would love to finish my degree while working at a company like Google, Facebook, Amazon, LinkedIn, or even a small startup. I have discovered the rush of obtaining certifications, so I hope to earn more and learn as much as possible.

From my first terminal to my latest server, I’ve always been building and learning as much as I can about tech. What drew me to NPower was the hope of actually turning that love into a career. I originally worked in the restaurant industry as a manager, taking life one day at a time and existing without any sense of guidance. I’d previously tried college but couldn’t build up the selfdiscipline to follow through. With the help of NPower however, this has changed drastically. On top of becoming certified, I’ve earned the professional and personal skills needed to flourish. At NPower, I have learned from and networked with people I’d have never gotten the chance to meet before. I learned the value of both rigid self-discipline and taking enjoyment in what I do. I’m a much better person now. Going forward, I’m going to use my experience at NPower to pursue a career in cybersecurity. I’m going to attain my lifelong goal of becoming an ethical hacker, hopefully within the finance industry. To anyone going through the program I would say: NPower will give you the tools, but you are the one who’ll have to use them.

INTERNSHIP  Citi Before enrolling in NPower, I had dropped out of college, was working a part-time job with full-time hours, and I couldn’t see my future. IT or technology, in general, has always been interesting to me, but as a hobby and something that I would do for fun. After hearing about NPower through an outreach session, I instantly knew that this was something I needed. NPower helped me develop professionally in addition to connecting me with like-minded individuals. NPower provided the structure I needed to guide me toward the right path. After completing the Tech Fundamentals program, I look forward to studying for more advanced certifications in the field of networking, cloud technologies, and database administration. I look forward to being part of a company that I can call my work family.

However, as the weeks went by I connected with many of my classmates who helped me through the program and became a family. NPower hosted many guest lecturers who helped me get an idea of the possible career choices that I can pursue. The site visits at different technology companies were equally valuable to understanding IT and business environments. Moving forward, I want to continue learning software engineering to become an app and web developer. Multimedia and teaching have always been a passion of mine, and I hope to put those to use. I had had a drive for technology since 2009 when my family and I immigrated to the US from Bangladesh. Coming from a third world country, I did not know technology or anything tech related. What drew me to tech and NPower is my dream to pursue a lucrative, challenging career in this field. I have gained technical and professional skills from my instructors and classmates. I’ve learned to communicate efficiently and professionally. The staff are fantastic people, working hard every day to ensure that students are comfortable, learning as much in short period and ultimately want to see them succeed. Right now, I’m looking forward to completing the program and internship, so I can apply what I have learned here at NPower. My experience at NPower has been meaningful and positive from the caring staff to the impactful site visits. Before NPower, life was a constant repetition of managing a retail store. I knew I could achieve more. NPower provided the opportunity to be in a fast-paced field that enticed me ever since I watched the 1994 movie ‘Hackers.’ While at NPower, I grew as a professional individual: gaining my A+ certificate and working on hard-skills while improving my soft skills. Professional development with AMA, Case Studies with Ernst & Young, and site tours like at JP Morgan Chase, allowed me to get closer becoming a more “T-shaped” Techie. With the skills I’ve gathered through these few short months, I am closer to entering the world as a cloud security specialist. I look forward to working with data and NPower has made me more confident to take on that challenge.

During high school, I was encouraged to take advanced computer classes and was inspired to pursue a career in IT. In 2017, after moving to the United States, I realized that I was an advanced programmer but did not have the right technical experience. During my time at NPower, I became comfortable with Windows and Linux operating systems, command lines, and troubleshooting computers, gaining enough networking foundation to land an entry-level job in the tech industry.

I was also able to improve the soft skills necessary to succeed on a team. Meeting with different professionals in the tech field allowed me to see their path as an example of how I should shape mine. My experience with NPower has been exceptional. I am glad that I was able to be in this beautiful family of people who are always willing to help me.

INTERNSHIP  NYC Department of Education I have been fascinated by technology since my childhood. I can still remember the first computer that my dad bought me when I was in 4th grade. I have a lot of passion for technology, but I did not have the resources to make a career out of it until I found NPower. The program has shown me that the path to technology is what I want. The Tech Fundamentals course at NPower really helped me gain knowledge of the IT field. I also learned a lot of professional skills and soft skills from NPower and appreciated their dedication to preparing students for interviews and beyond. My future goal is to become a security engineer because I love security in technology.

Before NPower I was working a 9–5 job as a car tech. I became interested in IT because I wanted to learn a new trade and find new opportunities. Since arriving at NPower, I have become A+ certified, practiced problemsolving, and learned what steps I need to take to obtain a career in the IT field. My NPower experience was intense—beginning from scratch in an area I had no prior knowledge or experience was a challenge. However, because of a little hard work and the amazing staff, I was able to succeed and become certified. Going to sites like United Way helped me understand that not every company looks for the same type of person—everyone has a chance as long as you try and want to grow. Five years from now, I hope to enter the world of cybersecurity to learn how to ethically hack companies, helping them prevent security breaches. Also, I hope to work with a company that can keep building my capabilities for the IT world.

My passion to succeed and to advance my life drove me to NPower. I could have pursued a new job in audio tech, but I saw a career opportunity believing that technology drives the betterment of our society. Aside from helping me earn an A+ certification, NPower gave me the critical tools to succeed in the corporate world; how to prepare for interviews, what is proper business attire, and prepare for future certifications. I would love to work for a tech team in a large media company, such as CBS or Vox. Eventually, I would like to go into consulting, helping companies maximize their profits through the latest technological and business trends.

I have always felt like I have guidance to offer other inner-city youth. Eventually, I began to feel drained by the education field and realized that I did not want to spend the rest of my life being a facilitator. A colleague of mine told me about NPower, and I decided to apply because technology was one of the things that helped to keep me out of the street as a teenager. It was one of the few things that I connected to growing up that I used constructively. The Tech Fundamentals program has been great. Learning is something I enjoy and being able to use it is a very pleasing thought in itself. There were a few instances in which some of the technical information was hard to remember, but overall, the things that stick are timeless. As I continue to learn new information, I feel motivated to learn more. After the program, I plan to jump into the work field while pursuing my interest in cybersecurity.

Throughout the program, I was challenged with pushing myself and working harder than I ever had in the past. Most of the material was new to me and quite a learning and professional developmental period for me. The numerous site visits allowed me to rediscover my love and passion for cybersecurity. After NPower, I plan on pursuing more certifications in cybersecurity and return to college.

Before Tech Fundamentals, I was working at Wholefoods as a barista and serving in the United States Army Reserve as a LAN Manager. I had prior knowledge and training on technology with the military but did not know how to merge my military and civilian career. I applied to NPower because I saw it as a chance to merge the two parts of my life. During the program, we had many opportunities to network and visited several different companies that incorporated technology into all aspects of their jobs. We were also able to improve our professional and soft skills. I learned that soft skills are just as critical as professional skills. After NPower, I will continue my education in technology and pursue other certifications.

I was working at Baruch College as a college assistant in the technology center before attending NPower. I wanted to go back to school, but my circumstances did not permit me to continue my education. Upon learning about NPower through my sister, I began to do further research and liked what was offered. The A+ certification, workshops, and internships were what I needed. I took the opportunity to apply and am glad that I was accepted. I appreciate the time my instructor took to arrange tutoring and the helpful study tips I received so that we all could pass our exams. My time management skills have improved tremendously. In hindsight, I am so proud of myself for taking this opportunity because of my growth in both soft and technical skills. Shortly, I plan on pursuing additional certifications such as networking and cybersecurity.

INTERNSHIP  Harlem Children’s Zone Before the Tech Fundamentals program, I attended a trade school for construction, had no IT experience I did not have an idea of what I wanted to do in life. One day, a teacher of mine gave me a call about NPower’s program that they thought I would enjoy. Hearing this information made me realize that I knew I was eager and interested in the ideas and art behind information technology. One thing that I’ve enjoyed about NPower is how genuine and caring my classmates are. NPower made me realize that I’ve always had the potential, but if I wanted solid results out of myself, I’d have to put in the work to get there. The biggest challenge that I faced in this program was myself because I knew what was required of me. I knew that this journey would force me to be significantly more responsible and consistent than I’ve been before in my life. NPower taught me a lot about not just IT, but how to communicate and understand people on a deeper level.

Prior to NPower’s Tech Fundamentals, I attempted to make a living as a freelance programmer and online seller. While I had great success as a seller and moderate success as a programmer, it was not a stable wage. I wanted to do something that I enjoyed but could make a good living doing in order to help out my family. My mother handed me a page from the New York Post on NPower. What first interested me was that they taught you what employers are looking for in an IT professional and provided a paid internship to ensure work experience. At first, I was nervous, but quickly felt welcomed thanks to my teachers and classmates. I enjoyed every class. I learned more about technology, got to know my classmates better, and helped them when needed. As an NPower graduate, I look forward to a career in IT and expanding my knowledge and capabilities while taking care of my family.

Before I joined NPower, I was working at Wholefoods market as a team member. While I was working there, I always contemplated my future and what I wanted to do. I decided to do something about it and do research on an IT career. I’ve had an interest in computers since I was little because technology is evolving and helping people on a daily basis. Through research, I stumbled upon NPower and read the positive reviews from previous students. While attending NPower, one thing I liked is that the staff was helpful and always there when you needed something. One challenge that I faced attending NPower was that I had to be there on time every day, but it also helped me develop time management. After graduating NPower, I am planning to apply for the cybersecurity program.

INTERNSHIP  Columbia Teachers College Before joining NPower, I had recently graduated high school and had been working a part-time job. In high school, I took computer 3D design and introduction to computer engineering, so I have always had an interest in technology. I have always understood it makes life easier, but I never pictured myself pursuing a career in technology. One day, my neighbor told me about a free technology program in the newspaper. I took a look at the NPower website and YouTube channel and realized how NPower could be a transitional moment in my life. My journey through NPower was insightful. My biggest challenge faced was staying focused day in and day out. In the first couple of weeks, I realized I had more of a passion for learning about technology than I initially thought. After graduation, I will obtain my Security+ and Network+ certifications while learning more and acquiring more experience in the technology field.

Before I joined NPower’s Tech Fundamentals program, I did not know what to do. I was home all of the time not doing anything with my life. I was part of a program called GOSO that was helping me find internship opportunities. One day, Yanna came in and gave a presentation on NPower, and I thought, “Wow this is for me!” During my journey at NPower, I have learned and done things I had never done before. My favorite lab was dismantling a computer tower and unfortunately having to put it back together. I surprised myself and learned that I could pick up concepts faster than I expected. There were days that I had to give up playing video games because the 901 test was coming up. It was hard for me to do but it had to be done for my future. After graduation, I plan to be hired at a site that will help me further my growth as a person and professionally. I am thinking of pursuing either cybersecurity, networking, or both.

INTERNSHIP  Columbia Teachers College Before NPower’s Tech Fundamentals program, I spent my days either doing nothing, playing in a squash league, or taking care of kids at an afterschool program, where I learned about NPower. I applied because it was something that I did not know how to do and I wanted to learn how to do it. The thing that I liked the most about attending this program was learning new skills. After NPower, I do not know exactly what I want to do, but I am interested in learning more about coding.

INTERNSHIP  CBS One day I randomly scrolled through my LinkedIn feed and what did I find? Johnnie Parker, my former schoolmate, on a Forbes article. I learned that his successful tech career started with NPower. Because I was looking for a change from the fashion industry, I applied to Tech Fundamentals. I am content with my decision because not only did I acquire IT skills, but I feel well prepared to enter the field. Site visits and professional workshops on business writing and emotional intelligence supplemented the coursework, which I find invaluable. My current interest is in network architecture— designing computer networks instead of garments! The next steps are to increase my credentials by obtaining the Network + certification.

Growing up on the outskirts of the big city, I appreciated that NPower acknowledged the disparity that exists between different populations and believed that the opportunity they offered was one I could greatly benefit from. The chance to network and gain hands-on experience and insight from industry professionals has been invaluable. Coming from a background that focused on writing, communication, and critical analysis, I plan to merge my previous knowledge with the IT skills I have developed to expand upon my chances of success in the IT world.

Before NPower, I worked at various retail stores in seasonal positions. I was not very happy with what I was doing because it was not something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I realized that I was into computers and programming, as did my friends. One day my friends recommended this training program called NPower, which trains individuals like me in IT and has an internship component. It caught my attention immediately because I have always wanted to know more about technology. Tech Fundamentals has given me a fresh start to a new career. After graduating, I plan on pursuing a CySA certification.

My journey through this all has been very rigorous and rewarding. It has been a lot of intense studying, but at the same time, it was all so fascinating for me. With the help and support from the staff, I overcame a lot of challenges such as understanding the material and all its complexity. After completing the program, my goal is to advance my career and receive a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or possibly go back to college to pursue a computer science degree.

Before joining the NPower Tech Fundamentals program, my path was unclear. I had a job, but not a career. I had no education other than a high school diploma and growing responsibilities. I wanted more to look forward to in my future. Because I was hungry for growth, I did some research and came across NPower. At this point, my life was making substantial changes. I had a baby boy on the way, I was getting older, and I needed growth. NPower was the perfect opportunity for me. I learned so much about myself. NPower taught me how to make progress and how to grow and learn in different environments, and also a great sum of responsibility. During this program, I became a person I did not know I could become. I do not intend to stop here. With the tools and experience I acquired from NPower, I plan on gaining more certifications. If there is one thing I took from the NPower experience, it is that no matter what you do in life you should continue moving forward. If you are unsure about what you want, be open-minded, be optimistic and take that first step. I have to give a special thanks to our instructor Kashif Jones. Thank you so much for the wisdom and all the great advice. You served me as a mentor and not just a teacher, continue to do what you do.

Before NPower, my place of employment was GNC. I felt like my life needed more purpose and I wanted to better myself. A friend recommended I apply to NPower while telling me wonderful things about the program. Before receiving the acceptance letter, I knew this opportunity would change my life, and that left me excited to join. NPower helped pave the way by teaching me the fundamental skill sets I would need to be successful in the IT field. Each day I gained knowledge and not a moment went by where I was not intrigued. After graduation, I plan to continue advancing and obtain more certifications.

The one that stood out most to me was NPower. The program was brought up to me by my vocational specialist, and almost immediately I knew it was what I wanted to pursue. During my time here, there, of course, was the technical aspect which I enjoyed, but I also loved the business aspect, and how technology correlated to huge firms and businesses. It helped me learn so much about professionalism and gave me an even broader view of why technology is so vast. After NPower, I would like to go back to school, get a degree in computer science, and obtain even more certifications to not only be more efficient but increase my knowledge.
