Luke Bowman (US Marine Corps) Served 4 Years

Internship: Second Harvest Food Bank, San Jose Job in the Military: 0131 Unit Diary Clerk Decorations: Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal with 1 Bronze Star, Sea Service Development Ribbon, North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal - Kosovo I am a third generation military veteran and a second generation Marine, following my grand uncle who was one of the first black Marines. After the Corps, I worked in retail management then banking, where I obtained a stockbroker license. I became aware of NPower at the San Francisco EDD while discussing new career opportunities. My longterm goal is to become a product manager. I would like to thank NPower for giving me this opportunity and opening the door to the IT world. Even though I am a Bay Area native, not having tech skills is like living in another country without being able to speak the language. NPower has enabled me to continue to live in the place I love and embark on a successful career.

Atilio Chelin (Army National Guard) Currently Serving

Internship: Splunk, San Jose Job in the Military: 89B Ammunition Specialist Joining the military was something I wanted early on. I enlisted in the Army as an 89B Ammunition Specialist and attended basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. When I returned home, I applied my skills and training to work as a technician at Camp Roberts Ammunition Supply Point where I was responsible for ammunition turnins/distribution, vehicle safety, and transportation readiness. I found out about NPower through a fellow soldier who advised me about the tech training available to veterans. I hope to achieve the technical training and soft skills needed to transition into an IT career. My long-term goal is to secure employment with a cutting-edge company that evolves my personal and professional development. I want to thank you NPower for helping veterans and their families succeed in transitioning into the IT field.

Shao Ng-Southmayd (US Coast Guard Reserve) Currently Serving

Internship: Robert Half Technologies, San Ramon Job in Military: Marine Science Technician Before joining the US Coast Guard reserves as a marine science technician, I was a hardware support engineer that had been laid off. My time in the military, attending school, and starting a family turned into a longer-term career break. After landing a full-time position in a startup, I realized how important and challenging the field of IT can be which initiated a search for entry-level IT role. As I embarked on a search to help me update my IT skills, I was introduced to NPower from one of my former shipmates. NPower’s training gave me applicable tech and problem-solving skills while opening doors with networking opportunities. I look forward to utilizing my skill set to help people connect securely.

Mark Palmer (US Army) Served 3 Years

Internship: Robert Half Technologies, San Ramon Job in Military: Pershing Missile Crewman Deployments: Neu Ulm Germany Decorations: Good Conduct Medal I joined the service at age 17 after dropping out of high school and confronting limited job opportunities. Following basic training at Fort Sill, I was stationed in Neu Ulm Germany and served as a crewman on the Pershing tactical nuclear missile system. During my military service I became interested in investing and finance. After completion of my military service, I went to community college and transfered to U.C. Berkeley where I graduated with a B.S. in Finance and worked for FINRA, Union Bank, Deutsche Bank, Charles Schwab, and Morgan Stanley. I was awarded the Chartered Financial Analyst credential from the CFA Institute. With the desire for a career change to IT security, due partially to the reduced opportunity for finance compliance professionals in the Bay Area, I was referred to the NPower program. I have found the IT training and job resources ideal for veterans. In addition to earning a CompTIA A+ certification, I am completing my Security+ certification and pursuing additional training to further my IT career.

Jon Price (Air Force) Served 10 Years

Internship: Loaves, Fishes and Computers, Salinas Job in the Military: Civil Engineer - HVAC/R Deployments: Insurlik, Turkey; San Vito, Italy; Bremerhaven, Germany Decorations: Achievement Medal, Commendation Medal, Oversees Long Tour, National Defense Service, Good Conduct, Outstanding Unit, Small Arms Expert, Meritorious Service. I was intent on joining the military from a young age. The Air Force provided me the opportunity to learn heating and air conditioning with the Civil Engineering Squadron stateside and in Europe, which led to a role as an air conditioning technician at Trane. When I transitioned out of the military, I became a mechanical engineer building hotels, high-rises, and a symphony hall. After 15 years in Las Vegas, I moved home to Northern California and learned about NPower from a Veteran Transition Center (VTC). I felt that with my mechanical skills, fixing computers was not that much of a stretch, and a lot lighter lifting. The goal was to gain a firm technology grasp to help people, animals, and the environment. Moreover, my internship at the Loaves, Fishes and Computers will set me in the right direction. Thank you, NPower for the opportunity to learn and explore new avenues for my future.

My father was an LTC in the Army and persuaded me to join the Air Force. To this day, I believe this was one of the best choices I ever made in my life. I served eight beautifully exciting years on active duty, which took me to corners of the world I never imagined seeing. I exited active duty at the end of 2015. Being that the Air Force was my first job and only work experience, it was a bit of a struggle to find my path in the civilian world. I knew that technology was the way to go in the Bay Area, and ultimately the way of the future. When I heard of the NPower program, dedicated to training veterans for technology jobs, I knew this was a program for me. I have had an amazing experience working and learning with NPower’s exceptional staff. NPower has given me skills to be successful and helped me master the next chapter in life.

In September of 2016, I was part of a corporate layoff, finding it difficult to get a job in my field. I found NPower by working with the Veterans Administration, and I am happy with my decision to attend NPower classes and have passed my CompTIA A+ certification. I am currently earning a security certification to secure a full-time security role.
