The most important thing I got out of the military was learning how to better communicate. Before my service, I was passive and non-confrontational but learned how critical it was to know how to express yourself in a manner that is direct and professional to complete mission objectives effectively. I was drawn to coding at age thirteen when I started manipulating HTML code on different social media sites. In 2015, I decided to go back to school to complete another degree in digital forensics, which required me to take courses in HTML, CSS, Python, and C++. Once again, my interest in coding sparked. This course will allow me to apply current knowledge to upcoming projects while learning new skillsets. I look forward to gaining a working knowledge of MySQL and jQuery while working with my peers to exchange information in regards to the subjects we are learning.
JOB IN THE MILITARY Still Photographic Specialist STATION ASSIGNMENTS (48th Tactical Fighter Wing, RAF Lakenheath, Suffolk, England) and (Peterson AFB, Colorado Springs, CO) My greatest military accomplishment is the friendships and life-long skills of interaction and teamwork that the military offers. Beginning as a customer service representative, I have worked for Comcast Business, Insight Global and Veterans’ Multi-Service Center in Philadelphia, where I trained dislocated veterans in computer skills in Microsoft Office and CompTIA A+ certification. Most recently, I was assigned to Goodwill’s Computer Literacy Training whereas a computer lab assistant, helping to educate over 300+ adult clients with computer skills. I became certified in CompTIA A+ and trained in CompTIA Network+ and Cisco CCNA routing & switching. The tools in the coding class will gave me an advanced knowledge of programming and a greater sense of how the information technology genre works. Furthermore, I hope to gain a strong foothold in the information technology field pursuing my lifelong career goal of being a project manager.

I also became versed in project, security and information management skills essential to implementing policies. Understanding my strengths and behaviors enables me to develop the strategies needed to meet and exceed the demands of my daily life, career, and family. I applied for the Coding course as a precursor to the Cyber course that is available through NPower. As IT is an ever-growing field, with the support of NPower, I have the opportunity to not only continue my training but also create a network of like-minded IT professionals and future employers.

I have a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Texas at Arlington. I currently work in the insurance industry and have discovered a passion for IT. Deciding to join the NPower program has given me the necessary front-end coding skills and experiences to successfully transition into the field of IT. After graduating, I hope I get an internship as BA/QA and use the technical talent I have learned from the class. I am very thankful to have attended the program to be trained with the skills essential to be an IT professional.

Hood, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa DECORATIONS Drill SGT badge, Combat Infantryman Badge, Air Assault, Foreign Weapons Badge, Meritorious Service Badge, Army Accommodation Badge, Army Achievement Badge, Good Conduct Badge, NATO Badge, War on Terror Badge I served my initial fourteen years in the Army as a light infantryman and drill sergeant. I left the military, quickly gaining employment with Caterpillar as an IT network coordinator. My leadership skills and resiliency were inherited from the military due to the responsibilities of training soldiers and leading them in adverse surroundings. Caterpillar has enhanced my soft skills in management, sales, and customer service. Managing 11 remote stores for all IT services and support has given me a better perspective of company priorities and community leadership. Earlier this year, I connected with NPower to attend the Coding class and hope the skills I learned will help me be a well-rounded IT professional.

JOB IN THE MILITARY Cargo Specialist DUTY STATION Orlando, FL I started my military and education career together when I relocated to Daytona Beach, to attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University while I was drilling with the Army Reserves in Orlando, FL. My reserve unit was activated and sent into harm’s way, multiple times. I’m looking forward to the technology field because I love how it’s both ego-boosting and ego-crushing. One minute you are the hero who makes everything work, and the next minute you are crawling around on hands and knees searching for the power.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS Created a community initiative for the local homeless population in Compton, CA. Completed the CompTIA A+ training program through Syracuse University. Writing is my first love. I’ve always looked to writing as a creative outlet to motivate myself, others, and also to tell the untold stories of those who socially don’t have much of a voice. Today, I write articles primarily regarding cultural and social issues, and I recently penned my first children’s book titled “Granny’s Timebox.”

I am currently learning web development; a skill that I never knew I would value. I’ve always enjoyed working with words, but upon taking the Coding program at NPower, I learned that I could make words, characters, and symbols come to life in a way I had never known. I would like to use my coding skills to design beautiful works of art for web development clients and to develop an application to enhance communication between parents and childcare providers. NPower gave me the necessary skills to achieve my goals, equipping me with the ability to understand the programming languages needed to succeed. They are also assisting me with understanding how to market myself as a professional developer and build a polished portfolio.
JOB IN THE MILITARY Petroleum Supply Specialist, Avionic Systems Technician DUTY STATION / DEPLOYMENTS Multiple CONUS Locations DECORATIONS Master Military Training Instructor ND, NTL DEF SVC Medal TS, Global War on Terror Medal Within the training environment, I was the squadron leader of 800-900 airmen with six direct reports.
