Dr. Jennifer Blalock Vice President of Workforce & Economic Development, Collin College

Dr. Jennifer Blalock is the Vice President of Workforce & Economic Development at Collin College, where she supervises the Corporate College, Grant & Workforce Training, Seniors Active in Learning, the Small Business Development Center, and Workforce & Continuing Education. Blalock holds a doctorate in Organizational & Higher Education Leadership from Nova Southeastern University, where she focused her doctoral thesis on student completion and graduation. Blalock has over two decades of leadership in two-year college administration and credits their open access mission as her professional mission. A first generation college graduate, Blalock was raised below the poverty level by a single mother with a mental illness. She credits higher education and the opportunities it affords as the transformational experience which shaped her personal and professional career.

Carla Whitlock Tech Fundamentals Class 4

Carla Whitlock is a native of Winnsboro, Louisiana. She was commissioned through Southern University and A&M College into the United States Army as a Signal Officer, where she served honorably for fifteen years. Carla was stationed both stateside and oversees during her tour of duty. She deployed multiple times in support of OIF/OEF and received various awards, including the Bronze Star. Carla is currently working at Amazon in Dallas, Texas as an AWS Cloud Solutions Architect Associate Apprentice, where she was selected from among over 400 veteran applicants for the first cohort in Dallas. She is also a student at Walden University; she is working towards a Doctorate of Business Administration, focusing on Information Systems Management. She has two children: a daughter, Carlisha, and a son, Keiden.

I have a Masters in Social Work from University of Texas Arlington with experience as a Mental Health Case worker. I also have added experience as a QA Analyst, Microsoft SQL Server Developer, and Certified CompTIA + Technician. I am currently working as an intern with Citi Bank through NPower Dallas who gave me the opportunity.

Emiko Ascona (US Navy Spouse) Served 8 Years From: Japan Internship: Citi I graduated from Ritsumeikan University in March 2016 with a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations. Later that year, I moved from Japan to marry my partner who is currently serving in the Navy. The NPower Tech Fundamental program is a great opportunity and a start for me to expand my career path in the IT field. Through this program, I have plans to pursue a tech-focused career.

After my separation, I began pursuing an Associates in accounting as well as electronic technology and worked as an aircraft mechanic for a company called Ametek Aerospace & Defense. I have eight-plus years as an electronic technician between the military and working at Ametek. I have military and civilian training in troubleshooting, calibration, repair, inspection, installation, maintenance, and testing integrated electronic systems.

Rick Carter (US Air Force) Served 4 Years

From: Philadelphia, PA Job in the Military: 23132 – Still Photographic Specialist Duty Stations/Deployments: RAF Lakenheath, Suffolk, England & Peterson AFB, Colorado Springs, Co I enlisted in the US Air Force as a still photographic specialist with the 48th Tactical Fighter Squadron under the 48th Tactical Fighter Wing stationed in Lakenheath, Suffolk, England, servicing photographic services for the base for two years. Returning stateside, I got stationed at Peterson AFB, Colorado Springs, CO in the same capacity for SAC (Strategic Air Command) and NORAD (North American Air Defense) commands. In later years, I pursued an Associates Degree in Specialized Technology from Metropolitan Career Center (Computer Technology Institute). During this time, I obtained my CompTIA® A+ Certification (IT Technician)™ in 2008. After over 30 years in Philadelphia, I returned to the Lone Star state to pursue a career in the information technology and cybersecurity genre(s). I hope that the training and assistance that I receive from the instructor(s) and counselor(s) at NPower Texas facilitates career growth and education.

Micah Cooper (Alabama Army National Guard) Served 7 Years

From: Alabama Internship: Point Solutions Job in the Military: 91D Generator Mechanic Duty Stations/Deployments: Fort Polk, LA/Iraq Decorations: AAM, USN Achievement Medal, NDSM, ASR, and Armed Forces Reserve Medal I served three years active duty at Fort Polk, LA, after my contract ended I joined the Alabama National Guard, where I am currently serving. In 2015, I went to Iraq for Operation Inherent Resolve where I served as the Generator Mechanic. My duties were to support and maintain all power generation equipment for the 20th Special Forces Group, as well as working in the ops room, and as a convoy driver. I was awarded a few medals throughout my military experience. Thanks to NPower, I can further my IT understanding and knowledge.

I completed 20 years of service in the Navy, holding various jobs. My first tour of duty was Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron Fifteen and was part of the crew that closed Alameda Naval Air Station due to BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure). HM-15 relocated to Corpus Christi; TX where my tour included a deployment to the Mediterranean and the Arabian Sea as part of NATO and Operation Shining Hope, to aid in humanitarian relief efforts for Kosovo refugees. I was then stationed aboard USS Carney (DDG-64) Mayport, FL, an Arleigh Burke Destroyer where I completed deployments to the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas focused on mitigating the global war on terrorism. I transferred to Afloat Training Group Mayport (ATG) where my job was to instruct, train, evaluate, and mentor junior sailors. I was selected as an Individual Augmentee deploying to Balad, Iraq and was awarded the Joint Service Achievement Medal as part of Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force. My last duty station was Destroyer Squadron Two-Eight as an embarked staff member aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) where I served as Staff Tactical Watch Officer overseeing ten ships while in the Fifth Fleet area of responsibility.

Dipesh Dangol (US Army Reserve) Served 2 Years

From: Irving, TX Internship: Citi Job in the Military: 68J (Medical Logistics) Duty Stations/Deployments: Seagoville, TX I am currently serving in the US Army Reserve as a medical logistician at Seagoville, TX Reserve Center. I have completed my Associate Degree in Science from Brookhaven College. I am working on my Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology.

I served four years in the US Navy Reserves as a yeoman during the Gulf War. While serving, I worked as a public school teacher and became certified to teach in five different subject areas. Following my separation from the military, I earned a Master’s in Education, concentrating in educational technology. During my teaching career, I taught several different technology classes including computer science, engineering, web design, and architecture. Additionally, I have maintained several computer labs, a 3D printer, and a laser engraving machine. I am currently training at NPower to help make the transition from teaching into the private sector to work in network support.

Donald Furnival (US Army) Served 8 Years

From: Oceanside, CA Internship: Citi Job in the Military: 98G/35P Cryptologic Linguist Duty Stations/Deployments: Fort Jackson, South Carolina; Presidio of Monterey, California; Fort George G. Meade, Maryland; Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington; Operation Iraqi Freedom Decorations: Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (3), Army Good Conduct Medal (2), National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal w/ Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon I served eight years in the US Army as a Russian and later Chinese Cryptologic Linguist, which involved translating and transcribing foreign documents, intercepts and intelligence analysis. I wrote reports and set up operating signals and intelligence systems in the field. I was responsible for creating and presenting intelligence briefings and implementing high-value-target capture missions. After separating in 2010, I worked various jobs while completing a Master’s degree in Linguistics. I was an engineering technician for the US Forest Service and an English as a second language instructor at the University of North Texas and at the Dallas Public Library. I have been interested in computing systems since playing with robotics kits and the NASA website as a kid and have spent the last few years using the internet to learn networking and web-development technologies. I hope to eventually work as a network or software engineer.

Hood Texas Decorations: Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Service Ribbon Expert qualification on the M16A1 rifle, M45 pistol & Grenade I served three years in the US Army as a Cavalry Scout, during which I was stationed in West Germany and Fort Hood Texas. With roles as a team leader, intelligence analyst and Sr. NCO Driver. Following my separation, I began pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Business Studies and became a member of the college golf team, where I distinguished myself as a Most Improved Player and Most Valuable Player. After leaving college, I embarked on a career in office communication. During my sales career, I have received several individual, and team awards for sales achievement. The highest came as part of a sale management team that I lead a group of thirty sales professionals to gain the Global Center of the Year Award for improving year-over-year sales 322%. Currently, I am training to receive several industry technology certifications to reach a goal to become a sales (Pre-Sales) engineer and help continue to help salespeople achieve their goals.

Dario Garcia (US Navy) Served 5 Years

From: Dallas, Texas Internship: Citi Job in the Military: Boatswain’s mate, Logistics Specialist Duty Stations/Deployments: USS Wabash AOR-5, Long Beach, CA, Naval Air Station; Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth, Fort Worth, TX Decorations: Navy “E” Ribbon, Battle Effectiveness, National Defense Service Medal, Award, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Navy Pistol Expert Marksmanship I served five years in the US Navy as a boatswain’s mate and logistic specialist. Following my separation, I began pursuing a Bachelor’s in Electronics Engineering. Also, I have worked with some of the most extensive hospital systems in the country such as Christus Health, HCA, and University Health System through multiple information technology companies. I have military training in maintaining financial records, accounting systems, and inventory database systems. The access and opportunity NPower allows me to build my tech skills, gaining confidence in business and personal development training. Also, the mentoring from business leaders put me in a better position to achieve my long-term goals. 16


Donald George (US Army) Served 6 Years

From: Peoria, IL Job in the Military: Multi-Channel Communications Equipment Operator Duty Stations/Deployments: Giesen Germany/Fort Hood, TX Decorations: Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon I served in the US Army for three years and three more years as a reservist. I was a multichannel communications equipment operator or mobile phone company, technician. After the Army, I was assigned to the 32nd Air Defense Command in Giesen Germany where I maintained communications on a HAWK missile base and was then stationed at Fort Hood, TX in the 13th Signal Battalion. Our mission supported the 1st Calvary Armored Division. After leaving the military, I took a position as a corrections officer at a maximum-security prison. After three years I became an OTR truck driver before transitioning into telecommunications. I have over twenty years experience in installing, troubleshooting, and repair of various telecommunications circuits and networks.

Anjali Gurung (US Army) Served 2 Years

From: Arlington, TX Internship: Citi Job in the Military: Medical Logistics Specialist Duty Stations/Deployments: Seagoville, TX I am currently serving in the US Army Reserve as a medical logistics specialist who does all the inventory management for medical supplies. I also have a Bachelor degree in Information System in Business Science. Also, I am working at a Metro PCS dealer as an office assistant. I am starting my career in IT Industry by participating in the Tech Fundamentals program at NPower.

From: Irving, TX Job in the Military: Human Resource Specialist Duty Stations/Deployments: White Sands Missile Range/Operation Noble Eagle II Decorations: The Army Achievement Medal, Texas Adjutant General Individual Award, Army Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal I served eight years in the Texas Army National Guard (TXARNG) as a human resource specialist, and one year in support of Operation Noble Eagle. I had started taking college classes during my one year on active duty. TXARNG helped me to continue my education and to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. After graduation, I worked in telecommunication, for companies such as Ericsson and AT&T. Additionally, I have completed a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, on a parttime basis while working full time. I have a considerable amount of experience as a telecommunication engineer, in infrastructure development, and network optimization. I am currently working on enhancing my IT skills. NPower Tech Fundamentals program, I believe, is a right step in this direction for me.

I have a total of 15 years of military service as Active Duty Air Force and Air National Guard, currently serving with the Air Force Reserve. I am a proud mother of a twelve-yearold son and a proud spouse of an active duty service member. While active, I served as a postal specialist working at an air mail terminal as well as the military post office. After leaving, I transferred to the Air Force National Guard 125th Fighter Wing in Jacksonville, where I started working as information manager. As an information manager, I began my experience with computers, managing user accounts, data encryption, managing records and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology and pursued a Master’s Degree in Instructional Design. I thought I needed some certifications and experience, so I decided to become a student at NPower to receive my A+ certification in hopes to launch my career in technology.

Virgil N. Jackson (US Navy) Served 4 Years

From: Dallas TX Internship: Beacon Hill Preparatory Institute Job in the Military: FTM Radar Technician Duty Stations/Deployments: USS Long Beach CG9/USS Constellation CV64 Decorations: Sea Service Ribbon, Expeditionary Medal, Good Conduct Award I served four years in the US Navy as a radar technician; I completed two West Pack tours one on the USS Long Beach and the second one on the USS Constellation. Following my separation I began pursuing a career in electronics and was hired on at Texas Instrument as an assembler mechanical/wiring, a year later I moved to the semiconductor area as an equipment engineering specialist. After I left TI, I went to CCI Training Center and completed training for Computer and Network Administration. At present, I am in the NPower training program for the CompTIA A+ certification.

From: Goddard, Kansas Internship: Kids U Job in the Military: Field Radio Operator Recon Duty Stations/Deployments: Okinawa & Japan I served two years in the US Marine Corps as a field radio operator in the 3rd Recon Battalion, during which I trained In San Diego and Camp Pendleton then to Okinawa to join the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion where I did jungle reconnaissance training then went to Mount Fuji Japan to do cold weather reconnaissance training. Following my separation, I began pursuing a computer science degree when my education was interrupted by an opportunity to join Metropolitan Life Insurance in a computer operations and programming training program. Next, I became a database administrator at Gates Learjet and Apple in Carrollton, TX. When Apple closed their plant, I joined Electronic Data Systems, specializing in ERP Systems and customizations for 24 years until Hewlett Packard bought them. With them, I did many ERP implementations with many prestigious companies such as McQuay International HVAC, Registry of Motor Vehicles Massachusetts, Russel Stover Candies, Bell Packaging, Phillips Semiconductor, 7/11 and EDS themselves. After that, I joined Accenture National Security Services where I led a team developing interfaces for the Maryland Integrated Tax System utilizing SAP TRM and quarterly releases of the SAP GFEBS Army Financial Systems. Then I joined Intelligence North America providing Technical Project Management for their client companies’ Prime source, Allied Electronics, Altra Industrial Motion, and Animal Health International.

From: Dallas, TX Internship: Citi Job in the Military: Medic Duty Stations/Deployments: Fort Myer, VA I served with the US Army as a healthcare specialist. During my time at Fort Myer, I was in charge of the company’s IT department. Following my separation, I gained a strong interest in IT which lead me to NPower. The final overseas deployment was to Liberia during the second and third Ebola viral disease (EVD) outbreaks. I conceived, planned, and executed security for the national Liberian senate elections, the first United Nations Regional Quick Reaction Force, and, aligning $300+ million operating budgets, to execute the UN strategic plans in Liberia. With my natural motivation to defend and reduce threats, I have sought NPower assistance to transition into cybersecurity with a path as a chief information security officer. 49

In my last four years in the military, I served as a cyber network system chief, performing advanced systems installation, operations, integration, and troubleshooting. I planned and supervised the installation, configuration, and maintenance of all cyber communication systems. I missed working with IT technology since leaving the military, so I recertified for a CompTIA A+ and as a Cyber Security Analyst + through NPower. I hope to work as an information security auditor or in incident response, eventually becoming a CISO.

As a logistics specialist, duty section leader and class leader, I have built excellent communication and leadership skills. I have learned the values of hard work and dedication as well as the importance of motivating myself and others. I graduated Trinity Valley Community College with an Associates in Computer Science. I am an Alumni of Technology Fundamentals Class 7, Tech Career Accelerator/Coding Class, and I am currently in the Cybersecurity program, and so far through NPower, I have attained my A+ and CSA+ certifications. NPower is helping me gain knowledge, and real-world experience to propel my career in cybersecurity.
