ALUMNI SPEAKER DANIEL ROBBINS U.S. NAVY VETERAN
NPower California Co-Founder & Executive Vice President, Data Center Solutions at GIGA Data Centers
“What it Really Takes to Succeed? The modern marketplace does demand that people possess a wide range of skills to achieve success. Most of them you have to acquire, develop, and refine. But one of them—the most important one—is already inside you, ready to be let out. Don’t get in its way. It’s your passion to succeed…” —Jack Welch After I served in the U.S. Navy and before co-founding Giga Data Centers, I was Executive Director for DCD and SGI where I was the Principal Program Manager, World Wide Business Development Manager for the ICE Cube Product line. In early 2008, I left Microsoft as a Data Center architect to take over and build a new Modular Data Center (MDC) program for SGI (formerly Rackable Systems). I took a product concept and drove/accelerated the concept to a successful product-market fit with a customer backed approach. Within five months I kicked off a global MDC program with two employees, no marketing, zero internal funding and a strategic global partnership strategy that included the manufacturer of Microsoft’s first Containerized Data Centers. Within 12 months the MDC pipeline grew to over $140M, including manufacturing in the U.S. and Europe and deployments on nearly every continent. Being a visionary within the MDC industry, I drove the company’s go-to-market strategy, while aligning marketing & product development to sales in support of the company’s mission statement. Most importantly, I’m proud to be a graduate of NPower’s 1st ITIL & ServiceNow graduating class at Alameda. My experience with NPower has been excellent. NPower has afforded me the opportunity to increase my IT knowledge and skills, making me a valuable asset for future employers.

INTERNSHIP Robert Half Technologies JOB IN THE MILITARY Infantry Rifleman
MARCO ANTONIO U.S. Marine Corps Served 6 Years
I served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve for six years as an infantry rifleman. In 2009, I was assigned to active duty and deployed to Iraq. After finishing my enlistment, I went back to school, attending while trying to figure out my long-term career goals. I worked various jobs in customer service, security and delivery while I was going to school. Before NPower, I was a journalism student at San Francisco State University. I learned about NPower through my school’s military veteran student club. NPower’s Tech Fundamentals program interested me because I had been considering a career in the tech industry for some time. Growing up in the Bay Area, I developed a genuine interest in working with computers and technology. I’m an avid gamer; I built my computer without any formal training. NPower helped me develop the fundamental technical IT skills and soft skills required to work in Silicon Valley’s tech industry. After graduating from the current NPower program I’m enrolled in, I plan on obtaining more IT certifications and continuing to progress my career in IT. I want to enroll in more advanced NPower programs if available.
INTERNSHIP Nutanix I am a resourceful IT professional with five years experience providing solutions in accounting, finance and customer service at non-profits governmental and Fortune 500 companies as a contractor. I have spent the last two years educating and developing my ITIL, ServiceNow, CompTIA A+, and MAC SVC skills as a student/intern for NPower, where I recently won three Hackathon awards. (AT&T Entertainment Silicon Valley, IBM Call for Code Global Initiative Responding to Natural Disasters (42 School Silicon Valley) and the Women Who Code Silicon Valley Flutter.io Hackathon at Google.) I love presenting innovative problem-solving techniques utilizing transformative project management, and collaborative teamwork, having the mind to complete any task! I have a strong desire to give back to NPower and volunteer my time, talent and treasure to local community causes such as Cisco’s Veteran’s Career Transition Day and the Rotarians’ Rise Against Hunger program. Thanks to the NPower staff’s technical and professional development courses, I feel I am ready for a more challenging opportunity to advance my IT career.

While working in manufacturing, I decided to pursue a career in IT. I have always been fascinated with computers, and felt that now was the time to turn my hobby into a career. The free program is perfect for veterans to gain hands-on computer training and professional development. The best part of this program is the internship. All the benefits of this program are possible because of the staff here at NPower. The staff is accommodating, caring and attentive to all the needs of the students to help everyone make it through the program. Upon graduation, I am very confident I will find a career in IT because of the NPower program. I will always be grateful to the staff, fellow students and most of all, the sponsors.

INTERNSHIP Robert Half Technologies I was an undergraduate student at San Jose State University pursuing a degree in business management with a concentration in management information systems. What brought me to NPower was the knowledge I would gain to succeed in the tech field by learning tech fundamentals and professional development skills. NPower also provided me with an internship to showcase the skills I learned throughout the program and gain meaningful experience. My time at NPower has given me a much better understanding of my career path in tech through tech talks, on-site visits and learning technical skills. I will be interning at Robert Half Technologies on their cybersecurity team. After graduation, I plan to continue working at Robert Half Technologies, while learning new skills to stay on top of the trends needed for my career.

INTERNSHIP Central Computers Before starting NPower, I was trying to figure out what direction I wanted to take in life. In school, I was unable to decide on a path, and I struggled with community college. I had a job, but I needed something that would be more financially sustaining than Walmart. My mom told me about NPower, and the program seemed to be what I needed. With NPower, I have learned so much more about the tech I used a lot as a hobby and turned this knowledge into a career. I look forward to getting a job in IT support.

INTERNSHIP Robert Half Technologies JOB IN THE MILITARY Engineer Equipment Mechanic When I was growing up, people told me that if you graduate college, you should be able to find a high paying job. When I found out that this was not true, in many cases, I struggled to see how I could become competitive in the job market with little to no experience. While studying at San Jose State, I joined the Marine Corps in 2015 and had expanded my views that success does not happen by following a linear path but by working through many obstacles in life and learning from failures. Since joining NPower, I am now able to jump these obstacles and find myself in a better position to pursue a career. Studying is essential to becoming a good candidate in the job force, but it is difficult to break that first barrier and find your first step in a career. I learned the fundamentals of technology as well as how to be a better employee. I am now interning for Robert Half Technologies.

Prior to joining NPower, I worked in a warehouse for Goodwill and was simultaneously working on my prospects for professional development. One of the Goodwill case managers named Justin Bullard, an employee of NPower, suggested I apply to the program to receive training and attain the skills needed to become an IT specialist. Keen and willing, I realized the training would expand my technical skills, setting myself on the path toward attaining technical expertise. NPower helped me acquire an incredible amount of technical knowledge. I plan to pursue employment in cybersecurity and continue to evolve my tech skills. I have confidence in my future. Above all, I aim to follow my passions.

INTERNSHIP Nutanix JOB IN THE MILITARY Signal Platoon Leader When I first decided to make IT my career, I was only two quarters away from earning my bachelor’s degree. After commissioning into the Army Signal Corps, I had the opportunity to meet fellow soldiers who were already in the IT field, and I became more and more confident that it too was my destined path, but I didn’t know how or where to start. After extensive research, I came across NPower on a job hiring site, and I applied right away. NPower provided the perfect step through the door, with not only technical knowledge but also numerous resources, that I otherwise wouldn’t have had the chance or opportunity to have. Now, I have a clearer picture of my career path, along with the confidence that I will succeed, thanks to the network and training that NPower so graciously provided.

INTERNSHIP Robert Half Technologies JOB IN THE MILITARY Infantryman Before NPower, I worked for the U.S. Forest Service for two years. During the end of the fire season, I sustained an injury that put me out for the next fire season. While unemployed and job seeking on Indeed.com, I saw an ad for NPower. I have always been into technology, even at a very young age. My grandfather had me and my brothers building computers since we were six years old, so I figured hey, why not give the program a shot.
NICHOLAS KONG U.S. Army Served 3 Years
Being at NPower brought me back to the days of playing with computers with my grandfather, and I have built on the knowledge of what he taught me. I gained confidence in dealing with people, and speaking in front of an audience. I also advanced my professional development skills. I earned my CompTIA A+ certification and I am eager to put my knowledge to work. Once I have gained enough experience, I plan on getting my Network+ certification and furthering my career in IT. I am excited about the future because of NPower.
INTERNSHIP Loaves, Fishes & Computers JOB IN THE MILITARY Gas Turbine System Technician Electrical I completed twenty years of active duty in the U.S. Navy, giving me the opportunity to visit countries in Asia, South America, and the Middle East. I earned a Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal as well as two National Defense Service Medals. I transitioned into a customer service engineering position with Bowe Bell and Howell, working on inserter and mailer machines. The company downsized my job, so I used the G.I. Bill to pursue an undergraduate and a graduate degree from Brandman University. I came across NPower from the Cal Jobs website, and I decided to apply for the program because I have noticed that many industries are increasing their IT footprint. My time at NPower has reignited my love for learning new topics and has served as an entry point into the many career options that the IT field offers. The workforce development program has also helped me improve my job search skills and allowed me to connect with like-minded professionals. I am looking forward to applying the technical knowledge that NPower has imparted upon me into an IT career with a focus on data analysis and predictive analytics.

INTERNSHIP  Robert Half Technologies I left my job to travel with my husband before coming to NPower. Our plan was for me to get my A+ certification through self-study, apply with his company and then travel the world together working as the ultimate husband and wife duo. My husband, an NPower alumni, received a newsletter about an upcoming cohort a week after I had left my job. We decided that a classroom setting would be better for me, so I enrolled.

Everything about this experience is priceless. The staff is unique, quirky, understanding and supportive. Each of my classmates is irreplaceable. My time at NPower has indeed exceeded my expectations. I could never fathom taking so much value from a program like this. The staff cares for you, and they are dedicated to your success. One of the most important takeaways is something I was admittedly terrified to undertake: networking. I can honestly say that I am thankful they pushed me towards this fear. My successful deployment of this skill has opened many doors for me. Now I have an endless world open to me after I graduate, and I could not be more excited.
INTERNSHIP  Robert Half Technologies After finishing college, I was lost and had difficulty finding a good job. Applying for positions every day and not hearing back was disheartening. I found out about NPower through Indeed.com and applied to the program. I was surprised to hear back the next day. Of course, I was a bit skeptical because the program offered training, certifications and an internship, all for free. I figured I had nothing to lose at this point and decided to join the program. After the first day, I felt relieved that I had made the right decision. The program has helped me immensely in professional development and IT. Before NPower, I had no idea what I wanted to do but with the help of the staff and peers, I have developed goals, mainly to pursue a career in cybersecurity.

After graduating from high school at 17, I decided to join the U.S. Navy. I have always wanted to be in an organization where I can learn and become a better person. As a signal support system specialist, I trained in aircraft handling, directing, and firefighting; also gaining experience in two different types of ships. After eight years, I decided to separate and transition into a civilian career, but also to continue to serve my country by joining the Army National Guard. That is where I became interested in IT and began developing my IT skills. It is also where I realized that I needed to learn more about technology. I learned about NPower and how it could help me become more knowledgeable in IT. The program has proven to be the best choice because NPower helped me gain the fundamentals of IT, and the CompTIA A+ certification; I am learning professional qualities that employers want. NPower has exceeded my expectations by helping me believe in myself and start my career in IT.
INTERNSHIP NPower JOB IN THE MILITARY Aviation Electronics Tech (AT) I have learned and absorbed electronics since childhood, I studied programming Pascal and accounting, early on at vocational school. I’ve always been intrigued, and current with what’s innovative and my desire to be part of leading-edge tech is the reason I chose high-tech. The opportunity for aviation electronics in the Navy was my personal best choice. As a plane captain AT tech on CVN-74, working flight deck operations, I thrived in the world’s most dangerous working environment. In the military, I earned an expert rifleman’s medal, Hall of Fame Division, Battle E, graduated top of the class, E4 promotion for academics. I learned about NPower at Palo Alto ‘s Hiring our Heroes event. NPower’s information technology and networking classes caught my interest, so I attended a graduation for a better understanding of the professional development and education goals. I realized the program was the perfect opening to apply my legacy knowledge and update my IT skills while getting more certifications. Before NPower, I was pursuing my fourth degree in information technology. Although I had previous experience in the technical field, I lacked the support and professional guidance that I felt I needed for a career and not just a job. My educational journey was very unstructured and full of financial, emotional and tragic hardships that hindered my progress and broke my self-esteem. When I started my master’s degree, I decided to relocate to San Jose with my three-year-old daughter. I felt that I would be able to find a mentor who could give me the guidance and support that I needed to succeed. I was referred to the NPower website, and after reading about the many benefits of the program, I knew that I wanted to be a part of it. NPower has given me the career guidance that I need to succeed in IT.
DIRECT HIRE San Jose State University During the summer before my fourth year at San Jose State University, I decided to go on a search for an internship program to gain some experience in technology. I stumbled upon NPower through Indeed.com, and I knew it would be the perfect opportunity for me. At SJSU, I major in business management information system and have enjoyed learning. NPower makes me feel right at home with their friendly and welcoming staff. I was introduced to the fundamentals of information technology through in-depth lectures and interactive activities. These lectures prepared me to take the CompTIA exam to obtain both the A+ and ACit certifications. However, those were not the only achievements I received from this excellent program. My professionalism also improved through their beneficial workshops. I was able to practice my interviewing skills and created a spectacular resume that attracted many companies. Toward the end of the program, I gladly took a position at my university IT department. After that, I knew I had the ability to do well in IT with some training. I am a proud NPower graduate, and I embrace every moment of it.

NPower, has without a doubt, given me the critical tools and training for me to succeed in the ever-changing world of tech. What also attracted me to NPower was the passion and vision they embody towards empowering veterans. This country tends to overlook many veterans who sacrificed their lives for this great country. My time at NPower gave me a valued appreciation for cultural diversity and a sense of pride in what I do. It has caused me to learn more than I would have in school. INTERNSHIP Aston Technologies JOB IN THE MILITARY Culinary Specialist I am a U.S. Navy veteran and have been enthusiastically teaching myself about computer networking, cybersecurity, and various other IT-related things for over 18 years. After leaving the Navy, I began searching for IT-related schools to further my IT education and luckily stumbled upon NPower, where I have earned my IT Fundamentals certification and subsequent Security+ certification. I am a team player and willing to work with people who are tech-minded and people-oriented like I am; who understands not just security, but the business side of things as well.

INTERNSHIP TBA JOB IN THE MILITARY Logistics Specialist, Information Technology Specialist My military career started at age 18, three months after my high school graduation. My first experience in the Army brought me to South Carolina and then to Virginia. I have since supplemented my career through various technical/professional development courses as well as pursuing a bachelor of science in computer information with a focus on computer forensics at DeVry University. During my service, I deployed twice to Iraq, during the surge, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn as part of the drawdown where I served as a logistics specialist and information technology specialist. My technical background in IT has not been sufficient enough to land me a job in this market and NPower has presented the opportunity to get my foot in the door through their Network and Security Administration program and help provide growth in my IT career.

INTERNSHIP TBA I was born in Romania and came to the U.S. with my family in search of better opportunities. My love for technology is also why I completed a degree in computer science from UC Davis. I have always been interested in technology and I volunteer my time repairing laptops for underprivileged students. I joined NPower because I recognized that there is a demand for IT security professionals. NPower gave me the opportunity to earn the certifications that will allow me to enter this field, for which I am extremely grateful.

INTERNSHIP Robert Half Technologies JOB IN THE MILITARY Combat Information Center Officer While in the Navy, I was the custodian of all classified publications at my command, managed a highly skilled staff of over 45 sailors and administered large equipment inventories worth over $50 million. Upon leaving the Navy, my track record of success was further cultivated by my professional advancement in the areas of software development, process improvement, technical and operational management.
ALBERT HUTCHINSON JR. U.S. Navy Served 4 Years
Having worked in fields other than IT for several years, I was looking for ways to reestablish my foundation and regain my presence in the industry. To that end, NPower’s training program was perfect. Their in-class instruction fit with my schedule and offered the opportunity to obtain cutting-edge certifications. I am confident the skills I have learned have enhanced my marketability in the cybersecurity arena and prepared me for future certifications up to and beyond CISSP.
INTERNSHIP Robert Half Technologies I have worked in the Bay Area as a programmer and IT desktop support specialist in small companies for a few years. As a graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, I am looking to change my career into penetration testing for information security. I enrolled in NPower’s program because the recruiting wall in programming is so much higher than what I expected, and they have been essential in helping me seek a career where I can still play with computers without programming knowledge. When not studying, I enjoy working with my church to give food to the poor at the SF/Marin food bank.

I realize that employers are looking for people with technical knowledge and experience in project management, help desk/technical support and networking or security. NPower has been invaluable by providing me with the skills and training required by employers and has allowed me the opportunity to complete my CompTIA certification. Moreover, combining NPower’s training with my military experience and business knowledge will continue to open career paths in the IT security networking sector.

INTERNSHIP Murphy McKay With encouragement from my family and friends, I moved from Long Beach, California to Oakland to pursue a higher education. When people ask me what I do for a living, I respond with “I’m in the people business!” because at a young age I realized the alignment of my purpose is centered around the service of others. I am passionate about supporting my community and building spaces for the youth I first developed a passion for technology in my senior year of high school. After receiving Security+, CCENT, and CompTIA computer fundamentals certification, I intend to attain CEH, OSCP, and CISIP certifications. NPower has provided me support in developing and strengthening the necessary skills to gain, maintain, and advance as a tech professional as I aspire to become an IT security consultant. Not only has their support placed me on a lucrative career path, but it also allows me to be in the position to pass on knowledge to underprivileged youth and shorten the digital divide amongst oppressed communities. I believe change is inevitable. It is up to us individually to chose to grow or digress in the midst of change.
