A NOTE OF REFLECTION We live in interesting times. As we pause and take a 30,000-foot view of issues facing our nation, two of them are COVID-19-related unemployment and social equity. NPower did not have to adjust anything to be part of the solution to both of these challenges. NPower’s mission is to create pathways to economic prosperity. “Creating Pathways” means clearing obstacles out of the way. The NPower California staff is an obstacle clearing detachment! We work as a team comprised of three components: Program, Placement, and Development. So, what are the challenges and obstacles facing our graduates? Lack of tech skills, confidence, a network, or a mentor? Needing resume building support or an inability to get a job interview? The NPower California team helps reduce those obstacles. We provide tech instruction, professional development, social support, and job placement services that prepare our graduates for the workforce. NPower leverages a network of employers and partners to get our graduates living wage jobs. In short, we create technology professionals and set the conditions for them to be gainfully employed within the tech ecosystem. One of our recent alumnae was placed in a firm and in three weeks lost her job due to Covid-19. Three weeks of work, then furloughed indefinitely. When I called her to try to boost her spirits and give her some encouragement. She mentioned that she had applied to two new positions and had an interview lined up. Her resilience and determination paid off. After a successful interview process, she landed the job and also introduced the firm to our team—resulting in a new employer partner! Instead of boosting her spirits, she boosted mine. Her attitude, spirit, confidence and initiative were readily apparent. NPower had helped her showcase those innate qualities.

To our employer partners who have hired our graduates, our deepest and sincerest appreciation. Thank you for making a difference, for changing lives, and for supporting our students during the economic and societal obstacles they faced this year.

Semper Fidelis,

Christopher C. Starling COLONEL, USMC (RET.) Executive Director, NPower California

I left computer retail with Best Buy for a college soccer scholarship. After my seventh semester I was hoping to earn the same hard skills as my best friend’s father, a Lieutenant Colonel in Washington, DC. I endeavored to anchor my liberal arts education with the logistics of bucket-powered submarines, so I looked west to join the Navy. After discharge, I returned to friends and family for another year in retail with a sporting goods giant while coaching girls’ soccer for my old semi-professional team. The lack of school-related work on my resume prompted me to reconsider my major. I returned for mobile app development, but Hurricane Sandy and a family member’s passing interrupted CompTIA for a decade. I looked west again to pursue patent law and web development. I traveled far to earn a commendation serving disabled World War II veterans, as well as promotion to non-profit board membership and entry-level positions with for-profits. My affinity for public health has come full circle, from senior semester as a compounding clerk for a retail pharmacy, evolving into a junior IT analyst position. This is a natural progression; with my coding and billing experience, I seek favorable outcomes with providers. I plan to go far with the skills NPower gave me!

I joined the U.S. Navy directly out of high school and served 20 years, obtaining experience in law enforcement, intelligence gathering, and database management. After retiring from the Navy, I became a federal law enforcement officer. But I still wanted to find a way to incorporate my technical knowledge with my law experience. During my job hunt, I was introduced to NPower by a church friend, and it grabbed my attention. I enrolled in Tech Fundamentals to expand and develop my skills, including cybersecurity, intelligence, and coding. I believe this training will facilitate both my short- and long-term career aspirations. My goal is to obtain a permanent position within a government, federal, or military environment in IT, working in cybersecurity, Intelligence, or law enforcement.

I served eight years in the Air Force and six years in the Reserves. After leaving the Reserves, I decided to go to school; I received my associate’s degree in IT. I learned about NPower by looking online for programs that help out veterans. I joined to learn the terminology and get help with career searching, as well as to get my foot in the door. My goal is to start in a tech company in an IT support role, and then continue to earn certifications and work my way up. TECH FUNDAMENTALS | SPRING 2020

Before joining NPower, I worked admin during my time in the Navy Reserve. My job was to ensure that all documents were updated. I was accountable for all personnel. During this time, I was also working on my prerequisite courses to become a radiology technician. I was referred by a friend to NPower, so I decided to try it. When I started at San Jose City College, I studied business administration, where I became exposed to different subjects, including IT. Through my research on tech start-ups, as well as staying on top of the news in the field, my mind became open to new ideas. A friend, an alumnus of NPower, introduced me to the program; he talked about how he was able to get certified in Tech and graduate. Over the years, I have held several jobs, which has allowed me to gain work experience in different industries, including business management, sales, and customer service. After high school, I didn’t have a clear direction. After some thought, I joined the U.S. Marine Corps as a combat engineer. Upon leaving, I attended college. I always had an interest in computers. I enjoyed troubleshooting and building PCs. I decided to reenlist into the U.S. Army Reserve as an IT specialist. After graduating the Army’s IT course with honors, it was still difficult to find a job without certifications. I heard about NPower from a Veteran Affairs representative. NPower allowed me to earn the ITF+ and A+ certifications. I hope to have a career in cybersecurity as an analyst.

I am a veteran who served in the U.S. Navy for four years. I have a B.S. in computer science. I heard about NPower while studying at the College of San Mateo. I love information technologies, and I want to develop my skills. More importantly, I am someone who likes to work with machines and people because I love solving problems for both sides. I joined NPower to learn tech fundamental skills and meet some great people. In addition, my background in customer service as a logistics specialist in the military can help me to grow at a faster pace. I am sure that what I learned from NPower will help me go even further in the tech field.

I was studying for a B.S. in computer science at Brooklyn College, working as a cashier on the side. While I was learning a lot at Brooklyn College, I never knew how to apply what I was taught to the real world. Businesses don't look at your grades as much as they look at your experience, and when it comes to technology I had very little. Additionally, internships required some background in technology. I was taking the right classes, but I felt like I wasn't on the right track. I was wandering with no sense of direction hoping to end up somewhere. This led me to the NPower doorsteps—to get my foot in the door of the growing IT world. Software engineering has always been a goal, but there are always new things to learn, new things to explore. I am expanding my knowledge of the vast world of technology, starting by completing my degree in computer science.

Prior to joining Tech Fundamentals, I worked in the construction industry. In the last five years, I have noticed how technology has improved drastically in power tools, electrical hardware, and networking equipment. Although many companies are turning to technology to get ahead of the competition, there are still many aspects of construction that are untouched by tech. I joined NPower to build a solid foundation in tech, hoping that with these new skills I will find real-life solutions for the construction industry. I look forward to a future in tech and the opportunity to make helpful contributions.

I was born and raised in Scotland. I served five years in the elite Royal Marines Commandos before leaving to pursue a B.S. degree in my hometown of Edinburgh. After graduating, I got married and moved to the United States. I have worked in a number of roles, from sales to tech, including for a high-flying automotive start-up, the wine industry, and most recently as a lead at Guitar Center. I found out about NPower through the British Benevolent Society and saw it as a great fit to advance my career and learn about the tech industry. My ultimate aim is to work in the data science or data security sectors.

Before NPower, I served in the U.S Army for nine years. While in the Army, I gained more than five years of experience in operation and project management. In my last assignment, I directed a multi-profession team to provide health and medical training for thousands of U.S military personnel and local nationals in Central America. I realized while in the Army that there is much improvement needed in the health care system, cybersecurity, and IT. I joined NPower hoping to get opportunities and tools needed to achieve that mission. I am very excited about this career path!

I immigrated to the United States during high school; upon graduation, I joined the U.S. Marines. After serving, I started in community college. It was tough—really tough. I recall falling asleep in class and becoming frustrated with my school-life balance. But I never gave up! I learned to set short- and longterm goals. Upon graduating, I transferred to CSUEB and finished my B.S. in supply-chain management. My long-term goal was to be a successful project manager. I entered an MBA program and got my PMP certification. Now, NPower will take me where I need to go! It has opened the door to the tech industry and given me skills for my dream job. NPower is helping me sharpen my professional, personal, and teaching skills and supporting me in unimaginable ways. Our country, the United States, is great—not just because of those who served, but because there are organizations like NPower helping those who served. Thank you, NPower!!!

As a first generation American, it has been challenging to adapt to the huge world of technology. Seeking more challenges, I joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and stayed four years. I saw how tech has helped make work more efficient and effective. I acquired some background in computer hardware growing up and while in the military, and now, NPower has given me the stepping stone to earn my certifications in CompTIA ITF+ and A+. Tech is changing the world, and I want to put a footprint in IT! My goal is to complete Tech Fundamentals and further my knowledge so I can become an IT networking/ hardware specialist, I trust that NPower can be the foundation to success in the technology world!

I was born in Monterey, CA and raised in the former Yugoslavia before the Iron Curtain toppled down in 1989. My interest in tech actually began then, and expanded when I came back to the United States due to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Ironically, information and communications were censured and inherently, I knew that these were critical to making life-changing decisions. Fast forward to the vast technology advancements in the U.S. The third world has not kept up, and as a result, their economies have been stunted. Security and data access have become intertwined since 9/11. I gained an educational background to better understand globalism, but I was missing a tech understanding. NPower came to the rescue! I am completing all available certifications (ITF+, A+, MOS Microsoft) so that I can be fully equipped to enter these IT fields: data analytics, network, or cybersecurity analyst.
