When I began the NPower program, I was a senior at Rutgers University, majoring in Information Technology & Informatics and minoring in psychology. One of my classmates told me about NPower and how it landed him a full-time job in cybersecurity before even graduating college— all for free! It seemed too good to be true. When I learned that a Newark branch had opened, I decided to give it a shot. When the pandemic hit, our classes became virtual. I balanced NPower and college online, spending 12 to 15 hours on my laptop. It was an adjustment, but everyone at NPower was supportive and understanding. I’m grateful for the knowledge I gained, the opportunity to share my story in an interview with PBS, the people I added to my professional network, and the new skills I listed on my resume. The placement team catered to my needs and interests. NPower goes above and beyond to educate and empower the people in its communities!

JOB IN THE MILITARY Aircraft Maintenance Admin, Aerial Observer
Before starting NPower, I was working part-time as a lab assistant at a metal-finishing company and part-time as an Amazon associate. I spent a year in college pursuing a computer science degree but realized college wasn't for me. I began studying IT on my own. From there, I learned about certifications and realized I wanted to pursue cybersecurity. I knew I had to start from the beginning. NPower has truly improved my life and guided me through the IT world. It's been smooth sailing after I put in all that work in the early months. I've always believed I have what it takes to be part of the technology field, and now I'm excelling in my internship. I'm thankful for NPower and will continue to grow as a technician.
After high school I went to community college and switched majors each semester before joining the Marine Corps. In the Marines, I finished first in my class, which gave me the choice of duty station—San Diego. My military duties included maintaining databases and programs used by my helicopter squadron. I was promoted to the air crew on the helicopters my squadron maintained. Getting to take direct part in the mission instead of working behind the scenes was great. After my service, I used my G.I. Bill to attend college. Before finishing my degree, I was offered a role as case manager in the Veterans' Services Group of Finkelstein & Partners, LLP. For five years I’ve helped veterans appeal thousands of incorrect VA disability claim decisions, resulting in millions of dollars in past-due benefits. NPower has helped me immensely. Learning CompTIA ITF+ and CompTIA A+ concepts gave me the foundation to succeed in IT. The mentoring program may be the best thing that has ever happened to me. I’m studying to attain the AWS Cloud Solutions Architect certification. I will use the communication skills developed as a case manager to get my foot in the door in a consulting role.

Before NPower, I was a stay-athome mom with three young children. I was at home for two years. I had a hard time finding a job because of my employment gap and the pandemic ravaging the economy, leaving many more people chasing fewer jobs. The pandemic also led me to think about where to take my career. My husband got an email about NPower. Reading the success stories of past trainees who now have careers in IT got me hoping that could be me one day! NPower has been life-changing; it has given me the knowledge, skills, and confidence to pursue a career in IT. I have made professional connections that I could not have made on my own. I plan to continue growing and developing; I can’t thank NPower enough for helping me with my career transition.

I joined the U.S. Army right after high school. At 17, I had my doubts about college, so I decided to serve my country. After the military, I had a hard time finding a career. I decided to return to school to major in information systems. I found NPower while researching entry-level roles. I came in knowing I would receive top-notch technical training. I knew I could break any barriers in finding gainful employment. The recruitment process demonstrated how much the staff genuinely cares about its trainees. Before NPower, I had graduated from the City University of New York and entered the workforce in the middle of a pandemic. NPower provided the professional qualifications and assurance to continue my job search with confidence.

I am a U.S. Navy veteran. Because of high test scores, I was given a $30,000 college fund to enlist as an operations specialist. I served from 1999 to 2003 and successfully completed my military service with an honorable discharge, two good conduct medals and the National Defense Medal. Two years later, I joined Bank of America as a fraud analyst, senior support officer, and training instructor. After the market crash of 2008, I became unemployed for two years and decided to pursue a career in cosmetology and barbering. In 2019, I obtained my cosmetology instructor license and began teaching for Paul Mitchell Schools. Although I loved teaching, it didn’t provide enough income. In 2020, I was offered an entry-level position as a fraud specialist with Wells Fargo. I found NPower and the Tech Fundamentals Program and applied immediately. I’ve always had an interest in computers and technology, but I didn’t know what path to take. NPower has helped me get started in my new career.
I joined the U.S. Army Reserve immediately after high school. I had the opportunity to be at home and continue to work between drills. I was fortunate to have been working in the healthcare industry for 23 years in many roles. In 2019, my company restructured, and my job was eliminated. That’s when I heard about NPower. My brother-in-law, an alumnus, recommended that I apply. I took it as an opportunity to be reskilled in a new field. I’m glad I took the leap. I’ve learned a great deal in a short time and plan to keep pushing forward towards a new career path.

I was working in a bakery worrying about my future every day. I didn’t have an opportunity to go to college and was barely making enough to pay my rent, with little extra money for my future goals. After looking online, I found a posting on Indeed.com for NPower, a program to help young adults and veterans obtain certifications and professional experience via an internship. In the program, I met new people and made new friends. I began to understand the deeper functions of technology, and even though I was pretty tech savvy before NPower, there were still things I didn’t know. After graduation, I plan to take advantage of the opportunity I was given in order to advance my career and accomplish my goals.
I was struggling to find a job after graduating with a degree in computer science when I found NPower. I wanted to give the field of IT a try, so I decided to apply. During the program, I learned about networks, computers, and information technology. Even though I failed my ITF+ certification two times, the mentors and instructor helped me to learn more and keep going with the program. I didn’t give up because there was always someone who would listen to me and continue to motivate me. The guest speakers gave a deeper look into real-world jobs. I developed confidence to talk to others. Just give yourself time, love yourself, make your mind strong, and trust the process. No pain, no gain. If you do not walk on the hard path, you can’t reach the beautiful destination!

During the last semester at community college a classmate told me about NPower. I was intrigued. His last words were: “It doesn't cost any money.” Let me tell you, I couldn't believe that. I spent hours looking into NPower, trying to find “the catch”—but I never found it. I decided to give it a shot and applied to the Tech Fundamentals program. Fast forward, and I’m now an NPower alumnus and feel so blessed to have had this opportunity! NPower has such a supportive and motivating environment. Throughout the technical training, I experienced growth not only as a technical professional but also as a person. Now that I’ve completed this program, I'm ready to take the next steps towards the new chapter of my story, out in the workforce!

I was in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve from 2003 to 2011 and working as a flight attendant for a major airline. I have been passionate about technology since I was a teenager, but I never got an opportunity to pursue it. Since the pandemic started, I wanted to make the switch to IT and came across NPower. I was unsure about the program, but I knew that by learning the basic foundations of IT, I would be able to start my journey in this everevolving field. NPower has given me the basic knowledge of computers to build upon and be successful in this field. I want to thank all of the staff at NPower for their dedication and hard work. I am currently working on getting more education and looking forward to a bright future for myself and my family.
Before starting my journey at NPower, I had an interest in technology. I built PCs with my brother as a kid. Having this interest led me to pursue a degree in computer science at Hudson County Community College. In a programming course, a classmate told me about NPower. I was intrigued, as I was looking for an internship. I finished my last semester and obtained my associate’s degree in computer science. I applied to NPower in the midst of the pandemic and was invited to interview via Zoom. After two interviews and an orientation, I was surprised that I was accepted into this competitive program. Upon starting the training, I have learned about troubleshooting theories and how to build a PC. I have also met many met many professionals through the guest speaker program. I am currently studying to obtain my CompTIA A+ certification and attending college to pursue a bachelor’s in computer science, as I keep learning more and continuing my path in the field of IT.
Before starting NPower, I was confused about what I wanted to do with my career. I tried a couple of jobs after finishing college, but never felt like they were sustainable. I started researching the IT field but had no idea where to start. Fortunately, a friend recommended NPower. When the pandemic hit, I decided to apply. It was a roller coaster of emotions and a challenging learning curve, but I was able to overcome obstacles due to the dedication of the NPower staff. I have built lasting connections with classmates and learned about the different areas of IT from industry professionals. I’m curious to see where my new knowledge base takes me and I’m excited for the journey ahead for the NPower Fall 2020 cohort.

After I graduated from high school in the Bronx, I joined the U.S. Marines in 1998. I worked in the administrative field, going from California to New York. During that time, I managed the office workflow, handled trouble tickets, implemented software, and implanted new processes to make the workflow more efficient. I got out in 2006 and went into the Army Reserves as a combat engineer. I started working in construction in 2010, working as a sheet-steel worker. Then I changed direction and went into the restaurant business as a bartender. Mixology, wine connoisseur, bar captain are a few of the positions I held. Then COVID happened and changed the world and derailed my plans. I had to reinvent myself, and NPower helped in that endeavor. They helped give me the skills needed in the IT field to reach my goals in with a career in project management.
I joined the Army National Guard during college because I wanted to serve my country and complete my degree. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and landed a job in non-ferrous metal sales. I did not like my job and wanted to make a change. This was difficult because there were not many opportunities for someone with just a liberal arts degree and a combat-arms military occupational specialty. I discovered NPower on the “Hire Heroes USA” website. I am thankful I was able to participate in this program because it gave me an opportunity and the tools to make a career change into technology.

I worked for a few months after graduating from high school with the hopes of being able to provide for myself with no career training or experience. Seeing no light at the end of the tunnel, I decided to join the U.S. Army National Guard where I would serve for 13 years. I worked with joint task forces in building network infrastructures. In my civilian career at Prudential, I created, maintained, and troubleshot monitors for servers. I worked with my team and assisted customers with all their needs and inquiries via email or tickets. With all my certifications expired, I found myself back at square one right after being released from my employer due to downsizing. Surging numbers from COVID-19 made it difficult to find employment. My time at NPower has given me a renewed understanding of the foundational requirements that come with launching an entry-level IT career. With the backing of my instructors and a strong NPower team advocating on my behalf, my chances of re-entering the workforce have increased dramatically!
I moved to the U.S. from Kazakhstan for a better life. I dropped out of my university back home and came here without a degree or prospects. I ended up working in retail and customer service for several years. I got married in 2019. My husband served in the Marine Corps. After I lost my job because of the pandemic, my husband and I were thinking about my future. One day he showed me an advertisement from a VA newsletter describing NPower. We couldn't believe it. NPower was offering a completely free education for military veterans and their spouses. I knew it was a sign. I was always good with technology and had planned to go back to college and study IT but couldn’t afford it. From the first interview with my recruiter until the end of the course, I felt incredibly supported. The team members were amazingly helpful. NPower empowered me. I have never seen the kind of support and caring that NPower showed me. This opportunity is definitely a blessing. I am beyond thankful that I found NPower!
