A NOTE OF REFLECTION While this has been an unprecedented time with a health pandemic that has touched every one of our lives in some way and the heightened focus around racial injustice, our Spring 2020 graduates have remained determined and focused to build the skills and obtain the certifications needed to excel in technology careers. I speak for our entire team when I say that we have been inspired by our graduates’ commitment to excellence and grace and the belief they put in NPower for support in building successful careers. We thank them for taking that leap of faith and trusting our model to work in the virtual world. While times are challenging at this moment, we at NPower are hopeful for the road ahead. One of the important lessons we learned during this pandemic is how vital a role technology plays in keeping us connected—to learn, to work and to communicate. Technology has enabled millions of people to work from home in a matter of weeks—and this proves how critical tech jobs are in every company and will continue to be more so in the future. A friend told me about the NPower Tech Fundamentals program, and I decided to apply. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made! NPower taught me technical skills and helped me navigate launching my dream career. I attended conferences on social and economic development, as well as networking events, interview training, and work-life simulations that prepared me to be dynamic and adaptable. I look forward to working as a network professional and transitioning into cloud computing. Thank you, NPower, for this amazing blessing.

My uncle works in the IT field, and through hearing his experiences as an analyst, I was inspired to break into the field. NPower helped me take this major step and gave me the opportunity to grow professionally. We were taught nuances such as the jargon one would use in a professional environment and how to present well for professional events (including dress and posture). We also learned about technical skills—different computer components, networking, hardware and software, and digital. I hope to continue working with New York Foundling, as I have had a wonderful experience interning there. Then I plan to obtain my A+ certification and pursue a cybersecurity career at Dell.

Before NPower, I was balancing working minimum-wage jobs and working as a security guard. NPower was recommended by a friend who graduated and found career success. Once I did some research, the opportunity grabbed my interest. Since I joined, I have met wonderful people with the same goals as mine. This has inspired me to push myself and thrive. I have learned how to properly communicate in a business setting. I also grasped the basics and fundamentals of technology. It’s been a journey; I know I’ll have a successful future in the tech industry thanks to NPower. Before NPower, I was jumping from retail and fast-food service jobs. I left college because I was undecided about what I wanted to do in life. By coincidence, my friend who graduated from NPower told me about his experience and how he was able to land a great job. That is when I believed this could be a great start for my life. My experience with NPower was a journey; everyone was truthful and outspoken, and I learned so much from people’s experiences in life. NPower supported me when I was positive for COVID-19 and felt like I was falling apart. Despite many challenges, I was able to gain so much knowledge and obtain my ITF and A+ certification. In the next few years, I plan to expand my learning to cloud computing, coding, and rebuilding devices. After completing this, I hope to work for companies like Apple and Nationwide.

Before learning about NPower at a career fair, I was struggling to find an opportunity in marketing. But I knew my interest in marketing could not match my passion for IT and computers. Before NPower, I was working at the American Museum of Natural History as a visitor-service representative. I had always wanted to join the IT field, but didn’t know where or how to start. At an NPower info session, I saw the perfect opportunity to step into the field of IT. My journey with NPower has helped me grow professionally and technically. NPower has connected me to people with similar interests and taught me how to set goals, develop time management skills, and network. I look forward to obtaining more IT certifications and eventually working with a small, diverse team.

Before NPower, I worked at Starbucks for three years, learning and helping other employees advance. This presented me with customer-service experience and problem-solving skills, but I began to feel complacent. I was looking for a chance to strive in a career I loved, which is why I began my career search and found NPower. The Tech Fundamentals Program provided an immersive, refreshing learning experience. NPower has given me a new perspective on the technology field and newfound confidence in being a professional in my chosen field. After the program, I plan to continue my career in the webdevelopment field as a front-end developer.

I joined NPower because I wanted to end the vicious cycle and begin building the foundation of my career. However, I received so much more! I gained the soft skills and confidence to stand out in a crowded workforce. With support from the staff, I landed a fulltime position during the peak of a pandemic. Now, I am more determined than ever to network and leave my comfort zone and make the best of this opportunity!

As a working-class, South Asian, Indo-Caribbean woman, I had observed that many of those in tech didn’t look like me. Being working-class means inheriting a strong work ethic, resiliency, and determination. It also means not having access to certain opportunities. NPower solves this problem by training young adults from communities of color and providing a wide array of networks to gain access to spheres where we have historically been denied entry. I am now interning at Citi, working with data, and having virtual coffee chats with people around the world. It's been a great experience, and it has solidified my determination to absorb as much knowledge and network with as many people as I can so that I can be a role model for working-class women who reach for the moon and stars!

Before NPower I was working in the automobile industry, connecting with customers to meet their needs. Although I enjoyed my work, I knew that I needed to challenge my mind further. Before I began my studies with NPower, I was searching for a subject that I could not only sink my teeth into, but apply, learn, and practice easily. I have always been drawn to IT because I have a natural curiosity for gadgets. It wasn't until I joined NPower that I truly began to learn. With a schedule that encourages interactivity and interpersonal growth, NPower has consistently pushed my classmates and I to become tech professionals. Moving forward with these experiences and knowledge in hand, I believe I can achieve any goal. I will start on this road by finding meaningful employment within the data-science field. I envision myself working in an intimate, team-based setting at a company like Cambridge Analytica.

Before discovering NPower, I was working at a non-profit organization that helps young women 18–25 find jobs and permanent housing. I always loved IT and enjoyed doing quick fixes on my family’s devices. When I heard about NPower, I thought it would be a great opportunity to gain more knowledge. NPower helped me acquire many certifications, such as CompTIA A+, which will help me start my career. With everything that I have learned, I would love to work within a tech department at a nonprofit organization that helps young, inner-city kids like me. I would also love to start up my own tech business!

Before NPower, I was working as a doorman and still trying to figure out my ideal career path. The reason I decided to join NPower was that I even though I had little IT experience, I was able to build my own gaming PC. If this is what I was able to accomplish without an understanding of tech, I could not imagine where my studies with NPower would lead me! I learned much more about IT and gained the confidence to launch a successful career. I look forward to combining my newfound IT knowledge with my love for gaming.

Before NPower, I was working as a field support specialist in a company I did not especially love. Through that job, I found out about NPower as a recruiter came by seeking candidates. Initially, I was apprehensive, but having spent so much time already with technology, I decided to apply. The beginning of my tech learning was rough, but the program offered study groups and taught me about making smart career connections, applying time management skills, and establishing work ethic. I plan to further my career in project management, through education or work experience. I would also like to work with a big team—I strongly believe in team success. If I succeed, my team succeeds!

Prior to joining NPower, I was working with Uber to support myself through my studies in business. However, friends and family discerned that I had a strong interest in and passion for technology; that’s why my friend (an NPower alumnus) recommended that I apply. At NPower, I received a quality technical education, support from a welcoming staff, snacks, professional attire, and even transportation assistance. Many of the previous barriers I faced while studying in college were removed by NPower. I learned to dress professionally, speak in a more precise and professional manner, and develop a resume that will assist me in a successful career. I joined NPower because I decided that I wanted to have a career, not a job. I wanted to do something that I was passionate about; college was just not the right route for me. Based on the experience I have had in network development, I am excited to pursue a career in network administration.

Before NPower, I was studying for a career in sports management. However, I decided to join NPower to expand my technical knowledge and find a path that would lead me to a successful career with financial stability. I was drawn to the IT field because I use technology daily, and I wanted to see how I could benefit from what I do regularly. I have had an overall great experience at NPower and gained much knowledge. I have learned how to understand and explain certain situations and functions in a more technological format and basically break complex or technical terminology into simpler terms to someone without a tech background. As my next goal, I want to work for a cable company such as Verizon or Spectrum as a remote helpdesk technician.

Before NPower, I was juggling school and my part-time job at the Geek Squad. Working at the Geek Squad and being around many technical advances sparked my interest in working in the IT field. Before NPower, I was in college trying to figure out a career path. I realized that I wanted to pursue my love for computers. What I enjoyed about my NPower journey was being able to complete the course and further explore something that I am passionate about. NPower taught me so much when it came to being professional or learning what the IT field would be like. It allowed me to learn time management, self-motivation, and how to make good career connections. I am now more motivated in what I want to accomplish and have more clarity on how to do it as well. As a next step, I plan to work towards becoming a consultant or a network administrator with a company like Tesla or ACA Aponix.

Before Tech Fundamentals, I struggled to find a career path. Fortunately my sister told me about NPower, and I decided to join the program due to my love for technology. When I was living in Colombia, technology actually facilitated my learning of English; I used my computer to talk to English-speaking people while playing online games. Hence, when I transitioned to living in the United States, my English was already at a level where I could communicate with people fluently. This experience with technology certainly prepared me for NPower, where I was able to use my communication skills during professional development training and networking sessions. I will continue to plan for my future in technology by acquiring the A+ certification and working with a big company.

NPower taught me professional and technical skills, as well as how to handle financial situations. I’m so glad that I made this decision because I learned about IPs, how to make ethernet cables, and much more. During the pandemic outbreak, NPower gave me a laptop to continue my learning with tools like Cisco’s packet tracer. With COVID-19, my learning did not come to a halt! As a next step, I’d like to get my A+ certification. Longer term, I want to work for companies like Google or construction companies that rely on IT.

After becoming a certified recording and mixing engineer, I realized that I needed to dive deeper into my craft. Today’s music producers and engineers use computer programs to make their music. My desire to excel drew me to technology and ultimately to NPower. Through NPower, I gained the knowledge to build a career in IT. I also had the privilege of meeting with a personal coach to discuss the business of IT and entrepreneurship. Before NPower, I left college with a concussion suffered while playing basketball. I was faced with having to decide a new path and finding a profession that would allow me to help my mom. I joined NPower to jumpstart my career in the tech field. I always had an interest in technology but had struggled getting my foot in the door. I couldn’t afford the education needed to succeed in tech. NPower offered a platform for people like me who had the motivation, drive, and commitment to succeed. I grew up around technology, so knowing how to configure settings on a webpage and learning how to assemble a keyboard and mouse were things I took for granted. With NPower, I realized that there is much more to the IT field. Getting accepted into NPower was an accomplishment in itself! I got the opportunity to grasp the fundamentals of technology. I learned how to put the pieces together and apply them to the real world to solve technical issues. This was exciting and rewarding. The knowledge and skills I received in interviewing workshops, networking zoom meetings, and hands-on labs encouraged me to continue my journey. I plan to transfer my knowledge and IT skills from my internship to my next professional endeavor. I will pay it forward, the way NPower has done for me!

Before NPower, I worked parttime for two years at Nyack College as a lab proctor. I made the decision to help my daughter adjust to life transitions as a stay-at-home mom. I realized it was also time for me to focus on my aspirations and decided to take the leap and start my IT career with NPower. I truly enjoyed everything NPower offered. This program pushed me to be a better version of myself and gave me the essential foundation to earn my ITF certification. I look forward to entering the workforce with the skills I have acquired. I hope that my journey will lead me to working with a company like Apple or Bank of America.

After studying international relations in college, I was unsure if it was the right career path. It was hard to enter the field without connections and experience. I looked for technology-related programs when I realized it was an interesting field. When my friend told me about her experience at NPower, I knew it was the right opportunity. It has been an amazing experience despite the obstacles due to COVID-19. I can proudly say that I am learning about personal development and different career paths within the IT field. I plan to gain more experience in project management and learn Python.

I found myself struggling in an over saturated job market, even after acquiring a business finance degree. Recognizing my love for technology, my brother encouraged me to apply for Tech Fundamentals. NPower opened my eyes to a new world with so many wonderful possibilities! I acquired valuable technical skills like configuring networks and troubleshooting hardware. In addition, I learned essential soft skills such as how to network and sell my brand. Joining NPower has without a doubt been a pivotal decision. I look forward to obtaining more IT certifications and pursuing a career in cloud computing.

Before enrolling in NPower, I had graduated from high school not knowing what type of career to pursue. While attending another program through HRA, I stumbled upon a poster for NPower. I knew this was something I wanted to do and then I was accepted! NPower taught me everything I should know professionally, financially, and technically. It was one of the best decisions I have made; this decision will lead me toward the career path I seek. Moving forward, I will continue to pursue IT certifications while attending college. I hope to work at a tech company with a large team.

NPower is on a mission to create pathways to economic prosperity by launching digital careers for young adults and military veterans.
