BRITTANY HOLMES

I joined the United States Army Reserves while in my sophomore year of college. In 2022, I decided to figure out how I could start my career in tech. That’s when I came across NPower. I’m looking forward to being a part of the CITI apprenticeship and putting to use what I’ve learned with NPower.
ALUMNI SPEAKER: JOSE PUTNAM
U.S. MARINE CORPS Apprentice, Bank of America
In August of 2007, I enlisted as an 0311 infantryman and served four years, earning a combat action ribbon while deployed to Afghanistan. NPower’s mission to help veterans achieve their tech goals is the reason I came to this program. I can finally realize my passion of working in I.T. and apply what I learned in my cohort to a career that I can be proud of.
STUDENT SPEAKER: KIZZIE DRISDALE

After serving in the military for 6 years, I went into law enforcement, then decided to get my teaching certification in special education. I had been teaching for two years during COVID when I was injured on the job. While having to learn to walk again, I came across an email from NPower. I am extremely grateful that I came across NPower as they helped me get started in my career.

Before starting NPower, I was enrolled in community college, taking classes, and working a part-time job. I struggled with what my next steps were going to be for my future. I have always had an interest in the technology industry but never knew how to step foot into it. I was introduced to NPower by my father who had graduated from the program himself. When I joined NPower, I was overwhelmed at how many opportunities this program offers from the ITF+ certification to professional development and resources to help you network. My time at NPower has not only given me the skills I need to be able to work in a professional setting, but also how to push myself even further to obtain the results I desire. After graduation, I hope to continue with my education and explore more of what this amazing field has to offer.

I am originally from Nigeria and graduated from the University of Lagos with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. I served in the US Navy as a Logistics Specialist. Currently working with Insight as IT Auditor and responsible for designing and IT controls including user access monitoring, identifying risk points, documenting controls weaknesses identified during walkthrough sessions, and providing corrective action procedures. I noticed the need for computer skills to stay relevant in the job market, and how the world is revolving around technology, and it continues to advance as people depend more on it. Upon searching online, I found out that NPower has a program for people who are interested in IT, and I decided to explore their program. After thoroughly comparing their program with other IT classes I found online, I found out that the NPower program is exactly what I need for someone without any technical skills or IT experience. Thanks to NPower for the opportunity and to all their staff for their support.

My name is Ikechukwu Asiegbunam. I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. I am a 6x certified IT Professional with over four years of experience providing hardware, infrastructure, and application software support services for organizations like Applied Data Technologies. Before starting NPower, I finished a program facilitated by Deloitte on Salesforce Consulting while completing the Google IT Support Professional Certificate to hone skills in networking, operating systems (including Windows & Linux), system administration, and security. I was browsing LinkedIn when I came across NPower Program and decided to join to further my knowledge in the Information Technology industry, earn more certifications, build a network, and possibly find a mentor. This program has been a blessing in knowledge/skills acquired and confidence gained. I look to continuing my education as well as an opportunity to advance my profession.

Before starting NPower, I worked in a warehouse. One day I decided to research how I could start a new career. The Oasis center offered employment opportunities and training. I completed a 24-hour job readiness training class before they introduced me to NPower. Because I was interested in information technology, NPower was the perfect match for me. I am grateful that NPower accepted me into the program because I have learned so much. Every day I learn new skills that build on my knowledge of IT. The NPower team has been there for me through all my barriers and challenges.

Before NPower, I worked for Frito-Lay for 20 years. After my departure, I thought it was going to be easy to get a job due to my experience. After several months of unemployment, veteran affairs suggested that I should apply for the Tech Fundamentals Program at NPower. Throughout the Tech Fundamentals Program, I discovered that the training was exactly what I was looking for to improve my skills for a career in IT. NPower has given me the knowledge and experience that I was looking for. I am truly grateful for what NPower has provided for my career and personal growth.
Thank You, NPower!

I have always wanted to be in IT and learn how to problem solve and fix computers. I have even taken myriad courses on computers to expand my knowledge. My background is in the electronics and electric technology world, so I thought it would be easy to switch to IT. However, all entrylevel jobs require one or more years exp in the field and certifications. When I saw an email in a VA newsletter about NPower offering free IT training that would lead to getting certified, I applied and was accepted. So far, I have earned my ITF+ and am working towards other professional certifications. I know that having the NPower experience will allow me to accomplish my goal and I look forward to seeing where this journey will take me.

I’m an Army Veteran with 4 and half years of experience in Networking, Security, and Communication. After active duty, I was constantly looking for ways to advance myself in new skills the civilian world needed. I was introduced to NPower through the Veteran Affairs email system. I enrolled in the program to utilize my time to gain the necessary credentials and knowledge for the current workforce in IT. NPower has helped me to accomplish my need and decide what career field I will pursue in the future.

Being a Military Spouse, it is difficult to have a career as we were continuously moving from duty stations. That being said I have always tried to find a place where I could start a career. Once my husband separated from Service I went into the culinary field, but with the start of COVID was unable to keep my employment. I have always been interested in the Technology field and I was talking to a friend when she mentioned that her son had completed the NPower Program. After receiving the link to NPower and looking at the options I decided that this was what I wanted to do. The opportunity to actually receive Training and Certification was exciting, it has been difficult at times, but the benefits of completing these courses far outweigh the difficulties. I feel that gaining this training will open better opportunities in the future and will allow me to really have a career and provide for my family.
JESSICA BRASWELL
Placement: NPower
I have always had an affinity for technology. I joined the US Army a year after I dedicated some time to Community College after. I have a learning disability that made college very difficult for me to show my full potential. Once I was Honorably Discharged in 2011, I was lost as to what my next move should be career-wise. I was a Military Police Officer but knew that it was not my true calling. After years of customer service, and earning my Medical Assistant License, I was still missing something in my work life. I taught myself how to build computers as a hobby and a spark was ignited. I heard about NPower through the Vocational Rehabilitation VA program in my city and applied immediately. I was so excited to have an opportunity to focus solely on information technology.

Before NPower, I was in a very tight spot mentally and financially. In 2019, I had just moved to Texas with no prior technical skills and/or management skills as well. I have been in the warehouse and food industry my whole career. In 2022 I had my first child, and I was praying for an opportunity to put myself in a better position financially for my son’s sake. In 2022, I waited patiently for an opportunity that could give me more skills and valuable knowledge that could bring me to a field where I could grow and expand my career, and that’s when it happened. My dad was the one who introduced me to the NPower program and since then it has allowed me to break into the tech field and gain some skills including networking, attaining globally known certificates, and mentoring veterans in multiple fields as well. The biggest thing I had to do was believe in myself and have faith in the process. I now look forward to officially breaking into tech and beginning working with Citi to become a full-time asset to a vigorous team.

Before NPower, I was working at my family’s restaurant. I always had the desire to launch a career in technology but I didn’t have the experience to do so. After doing some research, I came across NPower through LinkedIn. During my time at NPower, I was given the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications such as CompTIA ITF+ and CompTIA A+ as well as being able to network with employers that are partnered with NPower. After graduation, I plan to utilize the skills that I learned as a trainee to obtain a position that promotes development in my career in IT.

Before starting at NPower, I was jobless and looking to do something temporary due to my health conditions. I had a hard time looking for a job due to limited employment opportunities. When I moved to the United States after my husband separated from the Army in 2018 from Germany, I worked in customer service and warehouse positions. I realized I needed to have a degree to get a good job so I enrolled at a community college online for an associate degree in Information Technology in 2020 when the pandemic hit. During my search, my husband discovered NPower’s Tech Fundamentals Program for military veterans and their spouses. He encouraged me to enroll which I did very gladly as I was interested in starting my IT career. Thanks to NPower for giving me the opportunity as the training program was exactly what I was looking for and more.

When I started NPower, I was jumping from a dead-end job to another dead-end job. It became a process of mine to enjoy my hobbies and dread going to work. I knew that I would be able to start a career in IT but the amount of money that I would have to spend for certifications would exceed my balance. Interestingly enough that didn’t stop me from learning different types of software and other IT skills. One of my close friends graduated from NPower and he encouraged me to take advantage of this program to better my future. I went through a roller coaster of a lifetime just from being in this program but staying positive is what kept me going. I’ve been introduced to so many great people. It’s such a great community to be intertwined with. This program honestly helped me with my communication skills and social skills and being able to gravitate to all different types of people. I’ve learned way more than I ever expected and built relationships with people that I never thought I would have even met. And it’s such a great feeling to be in an atmosphere we’re all trying to gain the same goal of success.

After I graduated high school, I started working and went to college part-time. In the beginning, I was unsure what to do so I decided to focus on the basics first. It took a few years before I figured out what I wanted to do. Later, I got a job as a waitress and this job helped me with my time because it allowed me to make my schedule. At my job, I met one of my closest friends, Amy, who told me about NPower. I have always been fascinated with technology and I knew this would be a great opportunity to learn. The best part was that the program was free. NPower has been another challenge that I overcame in my life because it has proved to me that I’m capable of doing many things at once, and still being successful. I look forward to my growth in the IT field and continue to keep challenging myself.

I joined the U.S. Army when I was 18 and fresh out of high school. After I got out of the military. I went straight to college for my bachelor’s in business administration. I have a strong desire to be in IT and it ultimately led me to NPower. I heard nothing but optimism and positivity from other trainees and I wanted to be a part of that group regarding success. I wanted to be able to write a story and teach future students and give them motivation. I feel NPower has been like second nature to me as I haven’t skipped a beat in the assignments, quizzes, and exams. I am thankful and blessed that NPower is around to help get me on the right track for my career in IT.

Before starting NPower, I spent a little over a decade in the Dental field. After retiring from Dental, I choose to make a career change to Information Technology. Dental and Information Technology have a lot more in common than the average person would think. As a Dental Anesthesia Assistant, you create digital profiles and input them into the machines. This helps your body communicate with the team while your surgery is being performed. In hindsight, I’ve been writing codes for a little over a decade. The transition to IT was easier than I anticipated. I first heard about NPower from my sister. She was currently enrolled in the program and shared nothing but good things about it. I wanted to watch her growth and then see if it was a good fit for me. I decided to take a leap and apply. Being a part of the NPower family has been life-changing. The opportunities and the growth that it has presented to me have been tough but worth it. For the first time in a long time, I can say that I’m truly excited about my career.

Before starting NPower, I was working part-time as a hospital unit coordinator, a job I was overqualified for and had no growth in. However, I stayed because it allowed me to take care of my now 2-year-old daughter. When I was ready to make the transition to a full-time job; since I had a Bachelor of Science in healthcare studies, I thought it would be easy to find a job. After months of no success, I took it as a sign that I needed to make a career move. A dear family friend, Ruby, mentioned to me the young adult program at NPower and encouraged me to apply. My brother, an alumnus of NPower, kept telling me to move into IT because the opportunities are endless. Through this process, I have learned so much for which I am so appreciative and thankful for the gentle nudge to apply. My eyes have been opened to endless opportunities in the IT industry. With my new skills, IT Fundamentals (ITF+) certification, A+ certification, and Google Project Management Certification I have the confidence to launch my tech career and successfully obtain a full-time position to be able to better my daughter’s life.

I used to be an accountant, and I want to say it wasn’t the most exciting career. An opportunity presented itself for me to move to the US and I took it. Fast forward I join the Navy reserve. During one of my drill weekends, one of my shipmates told me about NPower’s Tech Fundamentals Program for veterans and their spouses, he told me how the program changed his life for the better. Even though I did not have any experience in IT, I took his advice and join the program a couple of months ago. Since then, it has been a challenging but also thrilling experience. My IT journey has just started but I can see it is the beginning of an amazing adventure. I started receiving emails from a recruiter a little less than three months down into the program. I will never thank my dear friend enough for pushing me and encouraging me to get into the program, and will certainly never be able to thank the instructors, educators, and mentors that are working every day to make this experience unique and empowering for us.

I joined the Army as a Senior in high school. After serving on Active Duty for 6 years, I transitioned to civilian life and immediately went into Law Enforcement. I spent about 8 years of Active Police service, while still serving in the U.S. Army Reserves. After having my last child, I decided that I wanted to leave the field of Law Enforcement for a better career fit for a parent. So, I decided to get my teacher certification in Special Education. I was teaching for two years during COVID when I was injured on the job. Being injured and having to have major surgery brought me home for 4 months. During my time at home, while having to learn to walk again, completely on my own, I did research and came across an email from NPower. I had always been interested in computers and technology, but I just didn’t know how to get into the field. Ever since I started the program, I have never regretted it. The staff has been great as they helped me learn a lot in a short amount of time. I am extremely grateful and thankful that I came across NPower as they helped me get started in my career.

Combat Engineer, E.O.D. Specialist Placement: In Progress
I graduated from high school when I was 16 years old. I applied to many universities but was told that I wasn’t sociably ready for the college lifestyle. With my parent’s consent, I enlisted in the Army. I enjoyed my time in the service and I was able to go to the college that was on my post to earn a degree in chemistry. After my Honorable discharge, I returned to my hometown, Chicago. I pursued to earn my master’s degree, work on the railroad, and found a bride. I worked and created several businesses and my wife, and I had two children, which we raised to be fine adults. Before studying at NPower, I was looking to get back into the workforce. An employee of the V.A. Employment and Education Program, lead me to a door of a serendipitous opportunity to apply at the NPower Technical Development program. I had no formal computer skills in the past even with my businesses. I’ve trained employees, supervised projects, and was a manager at other companies, and never learned much about today’s IT Technologies. Now I’m changing my career and my life joining the IT profession because of NPower!
INNOCENT EHIMEGBE
U.S. ARMY NATIONAL GUARD Petroleum Specialist Placement: CITI
Before I enrolled in NPower’s Tech Fundamentals Program to become an IT specialist, I already had earned a degree. I hadn’t worked for a few years and realized there was this dissatisfaction within me and I thought it was probably because the world is evolving and I desired to be relevant in my career and got this hunger to improve and learn more. I spoke with a veteran friend who’s also an alumnus of NPower and he told me to apply. I did and realized during my interview that NPower was the key to success in IT. I disciplined myself to give it all my time and attention. Since then, it’s been smooth sailing as the Tech Fundamentals program has allowed me to learn key information and skills that I needed to finetune my experience to be a success in this field. I see a clearer picture of what I should do with IT and now am able to tailor my vast education and all my many experiences to suit my purpose in the IT field.

UH-60M Blackhawk Pilot and Executive Officer of an Aviation Maintenance Company Placement: In Progress
I enlisted in the Army at the age of 20 as an Infantryman and Paratrooper. After reaching the pinnacle of my career as Airborne Infantry Platoon Sergeant I applied for Aviation and attended Flight School and received my commission as a Warrant Officer. Upon retiring from active duty in January of 2018, I attended college at Tarleton State University where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing and Industrial Management. While attending School, I began to narrow my career interest down to Project Management and attended the Technical Project Management Course at ACI Learning Institute. That experience and training led me down the path of pursuing my career aspirations within the tech industry. That is how I ended up at NPower where a whole new world of opportunities has been opened. After earning my initial tech industry certifications, I am fully prepared to embark on my future endeavors.

I joined the U.S. Army National Guard in 2016. I served my country from 2016 until 2020 as a radio transmission operator along with being an infantryman. After my time in the military had ended, I had a hard time looking for a job that would be suited to me until I found my current position. While assisting my company at a hiring event, I came across NPower. At first, I had doubts about it because I have so many responsibilities on my plate that I did not think I would be able to do it. I always had an interest in computers & technology, but I was never able to finish my education at the time. Since I started the program, I have regained my love and passion for tech and my goal is obtainable again.

After serving in the Navy for 7 years, I spent a lot of time trying to solidify the direction I wanted for my career path while working in various roles in the customer service industry. Over time, work became mundane and stagnant. As a teenager, I remember wanting to work with technology and I decided to go for it. I learned about NPower through a VA newsletter shortly after that realization. I’m so grateful I found out about it when I did because the main challenge, I worried about was free resources and accessibility to employers. I started with no prior experience in tech, but now I have the knowledge I need to build confidence in my abilities while also gaining the necessary experience to jumpstart my career as an IT professional.

It was at the VA that I first learned about NPower’s program, it caught my attention, but I could not apply to the program because of my work hours. Later, I found myself unemployed and ran across an article about NPower in a Military newsletter. I was so excited to apply for the training, I knew it would challenge me and after all the hard work I would find a new career in IT. NPower has the best people helping veterans and young adults achieve goals from the instructors to the professional envelopment team. It is an honor to be a part of this program and I look forward to volunteering my time with this program when I become an alumnus shortly.

Prior to NPower, I spent 2 years at Michigan State University. I was not quite sure what I wanted to do which led me to the U.S. Marine Corps. I spent time there at the Marine Corps Logistics base where I started off doing marketing for the Marketing and procurement for the base. After that, I moved to the Personnel office where I dealt with rules and regulations. Upon leaving the Military I worked in both security and customer service. Before ultimately landing a job with General Motors. I began to realize that I did not want to retire from the position I was in. I have a degree in criminal justice and I wanted to tie that in with IT. NPower was the perfect opportunity to gain the technical skills that I was lacking to make a career change. The training program is very rigorous and structured. Not only have I gained technical skills but also more discipline. I thank NPower for affording me the opportunity to advance my career while making a total career change.

When I separated from the Marines, I enrolled in community college and took different types of jobs like warehouse associate and contracting jobs like wood and metal refinishing. I had been struggling to find my purpose and what I wanted to do with my life. I was unmotivated in college because I didn’t feel any type of passion for the subject I studied. One day I saw “Free tech training for veterans” in a VA News email and it was NPower. I decided to apply and became very inspired by the success stories on their website. After doing some research I found Information Technology very interesting, and it motivated me to learn more. I am extremely grateful for NPower, and I aspire to be a role model for my community by becoming a successful IT professional.

Before NPower, I owned and operated my salon. Although it was very prestigious and self-fulling, I felt that my career had ended and become stagnant. After consulting with multiple friends, all of whom were in the IT field, they all shared exciting information that struck my curiosity. Thankfully one friend sent me a link to the NPower website. Little did I know that this new journey would open new opportunities for me. The Tech Fundamental program was a blessing in disguise. I’ve been exposed to new concepts and even peers who all come from different backgrounds with the same goal in mind. Going forward, I hope to use all that I’ve learned from NPower to enrich my life even more and begin a new journey in technology.

I was a firefighter in the Navy but I knew that it did not fulfill me. I decided to make a change and pursue my longtime interest which was Information Technology. I came across the NPower Tech Fundamentals program and the rest was history. NPower has a great staff that provides multiple resources that give people the opportunity to change their lives. I am forever grateful for this opportunity and would recommend it to anyone.

After I separated from the Navy in September 2021, I had a hard time looking for a job. I learned a lot of skills in the Navy and received relevant certifications for those skills. However, most of them are not recognized by the civilian force which made me incompatible with the job market. I realized I needed to make some changes to better represent myself in the job market. I think GOD guided me to the veterans’ job fair where I met the NPower staff there. Before NPower, I had little knowledge of IT. I didn’t know how to prepare for job interviews. The NPower team assisted me to this point and my achievements cannot be separated from the NPower team. I am so glad I made the right decision to study at NPower.

Before NPower, I served 24 years of active duty in the U.S. Navy as a Chief Boatswains’ mate. I’m thankful for that opportunity because I’ve seen a lot, done a lot, and been to a lot of places. After active duty, I spent time with family and obtained my Bachelor’s in Business Management. During this time, COVID hit, and the school transitioned to online schooling. During COVID and seeing the transition that everyone had to make to online got me thinking that I should start looking into IT. Upon further investigation and talking to tech friends of mine, I was on the lookout. After moving to Texas in Jan 2022, I read an article about NPower and how they catered to Veterans. Since then, I’ve been hooked. I’m gaining knowledge every day through NPower. I am very confident in my leadership skills and am going to compliment them with an IT skillset. I owe a lot of thanks to NPower for working with me and teaching me things I would probably have never known aside from helping me start a new career.

Before NPower, I was struggling with two jobs. I was a cashier in the mornings and a bartender through the night. My end goal was always to go to school but with multiple outstanding debts, that goal felt out of reach. My partner introduced me to NPower’s Tech Fundamentals Program. At first, I was unsure about my involvement with the program. However, I gave it a chance. I ended up taking a risk and quitting both of my jobs for a short period of the program to make time for it. This was a very huge decision for me, but I decided it was time to jumpstart a new career for myself. The classwork became rather difficult at first, but the staff members were so supportive and even my classmates became a huge help in finishing this journey. Taking this course has made a huge impact on my life by turning it around and reminding me I can accomplish great things. Coming from a low-income household, I am now receiving my certifications and growing more excited about launching my new career in IT.

While still in high school, I enlisted in the U.S. Army. Right after graduation, I left for basic training where I started my 5-year military career. After my military service, I attended college where I graduated with my bachelor’s in education. I was using Vocational Rehabilitation assistance to find employment when I received an email advertising the NPower program. During this time, I was also going through some unforeseen circumstances in my personal life that prevented me from beginning my job as a teacher. After reviewing the NPower email and looking into the company, I knew this was the place for me. The diversity, inclusion, and fact that the program was free appealed to me. I had no prior experience in information technology, but I figured there was no harm in taking on this challenge. The immense number of technological skills I’ve gained throughout the program allowed me to obtain my IT Fundamentals (ITF+) certification. I look forward to starting and growing in my tech career and thanks to the NPower program, I have gained the foundational skills and networking resources to do so.

Even at my job, I came to realize that there was a constant reduction in manpower needed to perform job duties due to the increased use of technology, and constant modification of technological know-how to better suit the company’s needs. This already was the main reason for me to continuously develop an interest in information technology. NPower has been of great benefit to me because it has helped me get the fundamental knowledge I will be needing to succeed in a career in IT. Our graduates of over 4,000 veterans and young adults are hired at over 2000 companies and nonprofits as interns and full-time employees.
