I was introduced to NPower by my husband who is an alumnus. At first, I was skeptical. I couldn’t believe such organization existed. After talking to my husband and eventually to the NPower team, I was surprised to learn it was real. I got my bachelor’s degree in business administration and was surprised to learn that even with a non-IT related degree, I could pursue a project-management career in the IT industry. I was trying so hard to get into IT and had gotten trainings on quality assurance and UI testing but was having a hard time finding a platform to boost me into IT. NPower bridged that gap, offering opportunities to get involved in certification programs. I am lucky to be a part of NPower!

I graduated from high school and joined the Air Force Reserves in security forces to achieve my college degree in psychology. This didn’t go as planned. While I was in training, my mother was sentenced to 20 years in prison. I went home to care for my two younger siblings. Before NPower I worked at a Wells Fargo call center. I resigned and started working at the Navy base as a civilian police officer. I heard about NPower and how the program offers veterans a tuition-free jumpstart in IT. I couldn’t believe that a program could offer free IT education AND pay for the certification, so I immediately joined. I met amazing, career-driven people who are just as motivated as I am. The staff provide an abundance of assistance to ensure you succeed. I plan to go into cybersecurity. Since most of my background is in security and protection, this seems ideal. I didn’t want to do the full 20 years in the military, so this was perfect timing to begin a new journey!

During active duty, I received my M.S. in Management (Acquisition and Contract Management), a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, and was promoted to the rank of Major. After I was medically discharged in 2019, I was apprehensive about my future, realizing that getting a job would be tougher than I’d imagined. When I was introduced to NPower, I never thought I’d be in the amazing situation I am today. The team inspired me to seek and conquer new challenges. NPower truly cares about each individual! I support the Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) as a senior litigation administrative specialist with the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Prior to the pandemic shutdown, I realized that my tech skills, acquired during 15+ years, were outdated and barely scratched the surface of current technology applications.
