2018
ANNUAL REPORT
OUR MISSION
NPower creates pathways to economic prosperity by launching digital careers for military veterans and young adults from underserved communities. In today’s economy, over 50% of all jobs require some degree of technology and digital skill, and this is expected to grow to 77% by 2020 in the U.S. Yet the job market is not keeping pace. Of the nearly 6 million jobs expected to require tech skills in the future, labor statistics project a candidate pool of only 3.2 million. NPower currently operates in New York, Texas, California, Maryland, Toronto, New Jersey and Missouri.

What a difference a year makes! In 2017, NPower refined its vision and created a five-year strategic plan. In 2018, we made significant progress toward our 2023 goals. We continued to build momentum in our work to fill the growing technology skills gap by training 851 veterans, military spouses, and young adults to launch their tech careers. Our graduates took the first steps to a lifetime of greater financial security and professional opportunity. This significant growth would not have been possible without the dedication of our team, the resilience of NPower students and –most especially—the support of partners and donors like you. Engagement fuels our impact. NPower’s model is built on a foundation of industry involvement and, in 2018, the corporate community rallied. We were fortunate to benefit from a dedicated, engaged base of 806 corporate volunteers who directly supported
Innovation is critical to our growth. In 2018, we pioneered new approaches to our training, in response to the changing needs of the tech labor market: we re-tooled our Tech Fundamentals core curriculum, launched an advanced course in Cloud Computing, established a center of innovation and excellence with the National Instructor Institute (NI2), and piloted a tech training initiative with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Before NPower, I was unemployed and struggling to study for the CompTIA A+ certification on my own. Even with previous IT experience, I knew I needed help. With NPower’s support and hard work, I became A+ certified. I know these certifications will open opportunities and I plan to earn more to support the advancement of my career. NPower made me a true believer that, through patience and persistence, dreams do come true.

Serving veterans is paramount to NPower’s mission. We have trained over 860 veterans and veteran spouses to launch tech careers since training began in 2001. Veterans easily adapt their teamwork, self-discipline, confidence, and leadership savvy to the fast-paced tech industry. They also bring critical thinking and resiliency that tech teams can count on to drive success in a continually evolving industry.
As the need for diverse tech talent grows, our alternative training model is a pathway for veterans, and their spouses, to earn the in-demand skills to secure lucrative civilian careers. The program enables veterans to combine diverse experience with retooled skills, the right certifications, and know-how to succeed in the digital economy.

After four years of active duty in the U.S. Army, Christopher began a grueling night-shift schedule as a Detention Officer in Oklahoma to raise his two young sons during the day. Even after 60-hour weeks, he needed part-time work to make ends meet. He was too tired, too frustrated, or too busy to be able to spend any real time with his family. One sleepless night, he found NPower and was soon on a flight to San Jose, 1,400 miles away from his family. The sacrifices paid off. His confidence built throughout the program and he was soon fielding calls from multiple employers in an industry he loved. Christopher has started his career at the epicenter of tech, in Google’s Silicon Valley campus as an analyst for Astreya and is continuing his education at Facebook’s Cybersecurity University.

A six-year U.S. Army veteran who served with distinction, Lucas enrolled in NPower during his transition from the military. His two hour drive to class, each way, underscores Lucas' deep commitment and determination for excellence which earned him the NPower Award at graduation. Following the conclusion of a valuable internship at Citi, he became a Department of Labor IT Generalist apprentice through the NPower partnership with World Wide Technology and contracted with Citi. After working on several high-level enterprise projects, he exceeded expectations and was offered a permanent role with Citi. Lucas is now an IT Business Analyst with a focus on project management and a shining example of the impact NPower can have on transitioning veterans.

Daney F. joined NPower in July 2018 while working full-time in retail and carefully balancing responsibilities. Her long days began in the NPower classroom followed by demanding 12-hour retail shifts. Throughout it all, she remained dedicated to the program and still found the time to study and problem solve with classmates. Her ability to persevere through challenging and stressful circumstances is a testament to her resilience and drive. She is a shining example of the talent that exists throughout the NPower network which will continue to transform the IT industry, creating a richer and more diverse workforce. The journey may be full of twists and turns, but Daney found the motivation from within to push ahead and seize her place in tech with a salary over 3 times her previous salary.

WITH SUPPORT FROM
ADVANCING YOUNG WOMEN OF COLOR IN TECH CAREERS In 2018, we embarked on an ambitious mission, in partnership with the Citi Foundation, to increase the percentage of young women enrolled in our program and employed as NPower tech instructors to 40%. The 40 by 22 initiative has two distinct objectives which will support the transformation of the tech industry:
1
2018 ANNUAL REPORT
Increase our program enrollment of young women to 40% by 2022 in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Missouri and California.
14
This program is made possible by a grant from Citi Foundation as part of their Pathways to Progress initiative.
2
Increase representation of female instructors to mirror our student goal of 40% by the end of 2020 in all the markets we serve.
Through strategic recruiting efforts, highimpact regional events, an extensive social media campaign, and series of important convening events, we are on our way to meeting the goal but there is still much work to be done. In 2018, NPower graduated 95 young women, most of whom are now employed in quality tech jobs. We also added five women to our instructor pool, increasing representation of women to 25%.

LAUNCH OF CLOUD COMPUTING
NATIONAL INSTRUCTOR INSTITUTE (NI2)
Launched in the summer of 2018, The Cloud Computing program was designed to move NPower alumni beyond basic tech support knowledge to learn the fundamentals of cloud architecture and how to implement cloud strategy across a variety of industries. Funded by Accenture, Amazon Web Services, Ira W. DeCamp Foundation, and the Heckscher Foundation, the innovative curriculum was developed in partnership with hiring partners to train students on cloud computing skills that are needed right now. We are proud to share that our inaugural graduating class achieved an impressive 88% retention rate.
We believe high-quality technical instruction is the foundation to an effective skills-focused program. We launched NI2 to develop and implement standardized protocols and best practices for onboarding, training, and retaining technical instructors to meet the demands of our growing national network. Diversity among our teaching staff is of utmost importance. We aim to grow an instructor team that reflects our student population. Now, we are able to enhance the learning environment, augment the quality of instruction, and improve student success.
