Before the illustrious Tech Fundamentals program, I was an intern at Enterprise Rent-A-Car and a full-time student at Morgan State University majoring in liberal arts with little idea about a career path. An inspiring conversation with my college advisor led me to NPower. My experience has been exceptional; I was introduced to a field that impacts society and was given the opportunity to become one of the millions in this field dubbed “inspirational.” I learned that I have more self-discipline than I ever knew and that I’m a fast learner. Balancing college and tech classes were a challenge, but I did it! I discovered a passion for networking and hope to start a career in tech as well as continue to pursue my music career.

There is no denying that my circumstances can get in the way of my goals. It’s my job to lay down that pressure and get on with it. That is my mantra. Since age 10, I’ve had a passion for technology; I just didn’t know what path to take. I learned how to program and got involved in my high school robotics team. I still didn’t know what I wanted to do, but these experiences heightened my passion for technology. Thanks to NPower, I gained more experience in technology and a better understanding of my path. I obtained my ITF+ certification, and I’m working towards my CompTIA A+ and ITIL Certifications. I want to take these tools and life lessons and go out in the field and dominate. My dream job is becoming a network engineer at Google, and I will fight for this! I’ll continue to advance my skills and knowledge and become financially independent.

An amazing friend, Clara Pitt, a Class 6 alumna, mentioned NPower. She said they’d jumpstart my career. At first, I didn’t take her seriously, but as soon as I met Ms. Staley and Mrs. Davis, I breathed a sigh of relief. Their energy was sincere; I knew I would get something positive. I am set on obtaining numerous certifications. Financial freedom is my only hope, and with NPower, it is possible. I thank my instructor, Mr. Greenway. He was so inspiring and uplifting, and because of him, I was able to break out of the maze I was in. Thank you, NPower!

Before NPower, I was bartending and serving at a tavern every weekend. I was feeling like there was no room for improvement or growth at my job, and I knew I wanted to do something more productive and fulfilling. I went to a friend’s NPower graduation and was inspired to be part of what they had to offer for young adults in my position. I had a love for computers and technology, so this was a perfect opportunity for me to better my education and become a working IT professional. I have gained so much knowledge that has helped me better myself and that I can take to new jobs that will advance me in the technology field.

Before the Tech Fundamentals program, I was working as a cashier and didn’t really have a sense of direction for my IT career. I heard about NPower from a family member and decided to apply. During my journey, I was humbled by the staff’s dedication to my success. I’ve learned how to conduct myself in a professional manner, which has been a great step in my development as an IT professional. After graduation, I’ll be diving into the job search. I will continue my learning process and strive for further certifications, such as CompTIA A+, Linux, and ITIL to expand my knowledge and earn a college degree. I’d like to thank the NPower staff for this great opportunity.

I was struggling to find what I wanted to do as a career. One day, I had training for a new system at work, and I discovered that I was adapting to the system more than I expected. In no time I was teaching my other colleagues what to do. What brought me to NPower was seeing an ad on Facebook. I thought to myself, maybe I could try this program. My time at NPower gave me a deeper understanding of IT. The professional development days helped me out a lot. After graduation, I plan to obtain more certifications and eventually pursue a job at the NSA.

Having a tech background, I started to look for tech jobs but did not meet many of the requirements. At the time, I was also ending my job as a program associate in a high school after school program. One of my coworkers informed about NPower. I had the opportunity to visit NPower representatives at a recruiting event at Mondawmin Mall. I was accepted and the journey couldn’t have been better. I learned more about myself and pushed myself further than I have ever had. Opening the computer and seeing the hardware up close was a different experience for me. Before the Tech Fundamentals program, I worked for several companies to make quick money. In 2015, I moved from Baltimore City to Brooklyn, NY, where I came across information about NPower and had an instant interest. Due to various reasons, I had to move back to Baltimore. Luckily, I was able to find an NPower location there. Ironically it was right across the street from where I lived, so there was no excuse not to enter the program. At age 25, I just made the age requirement. The staff made me feel as though NPower was the right place. They were extremely supportive and patient, which gave me a strong sense of belonging. The opportunities thus far are way beyond my expectations. I have learned to take accountability. I highly recommend that anyone between the ages of 18 and 25 join NPower!

I visited the website to get further details and then decided to quit my job and pursue my goals. I had to process how I felt about coming out of my comfort zone and move forward. I’m happy that I came to the program to begin my IT career. I’ve gained more technical experience and have become more professional. I learned to effectively use the resources available. When I relocated from New York, I learned about the Cybersecurity class that NPower Maryland was introducing. Before joining the program, I was working as a Field Service Technician with Comcast. I saw the program as a great opportunity to gain knowledge and skills while learning how to conduct myself as a professional. I struggled with the content at first but through hard work and the great support from the staff, I persevered and obtained my Security+ certification. One of the main takeaways is that technology is always changing and as a result, there will always be vulnerabilities/bugs and those that exploit them for nefarious purposes. My goal is to gain experience, more knowledge, certifications, and connections to have a long and productive cybersecurity career.

Mr. Davis, our instructor, is one of the best teachers in any field that I have ever had. He presented the complex security principles that we needed to know in an orderly and logical manner. But the most valuable thing that NPower provided was having a group of people that cared about your professional development and were willing to spend time and resources to listen and help, not only with learning the class material but also with any issues in life. Upon graduation, I’m excited to start new employment and get back on my feet.
