While working as a shift manager at Rita’s Italian Ice, my father told me about NPower. I decided to apply because I wanted the chance to learn the basics of IT and earn certifications. I always wanted a career in IT, and I knew that acquiring the skills and credentials would help me get to the next level. I also love the fact that this program provides networking opportunities with IT professionals. After graduation, I plan to obtain a full-time position while earning more certifications.

COMPTIA IT FUNDAMENTALS+ CERTIFIED INTERNSHIP  TD Ameritrade Before enrolling in the Tech Fundamentals program, I was working two jobs trying to figure out exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I narrowed it down to either school or the military. I couldn’t attend college because I was just not making enough money. I thought that joining the military was my only option. My close friend, who is a recent NPower graduate, told me about NPower and what it has done for him. I decided to enroll, and I’m very grateful I did. I learned a lot during my time and gained a new perspective on the tech world. After graduation, I plan to continue to obtain certificates and further my IT knowledge to one day start a business with my acquired skills.

Before NPower, I was a manager at McDonald’s and a recent graduate from Western School of Technology and Environmental Science. I was looking for something more stable that would allow me to have a long-term career. I’ve always loved technology, but I thought that you needed a degree, or years of experience to obtain a career in the field. A friend told me about NPower, so I applied, and was accepted. NPower provided not only knowledge and certifications, but also reinforced the soft skills needed for me to be successful anywhere. After graduation, I plan to self-study and teach myself more skills that I can use in the technology field, such as programming in Python and JavaScript while engaging in more advanced activities in Cisco Packet Tracer. I want to pursue a career in Networking and become a Network Architect/Administrator.

Prior to NPower, I was working as a bus driver. I knew that I wanted to change my career path and get into IT. Through NPower, I earned my CompTIA IT Fundamentals certification and currently in the process of learning cloud and mobility. After graduation, I plan to work in IT—a field I’ve always wanted to get into.

COMPTIA IT FUNDAMENTALS+ CERTIFIED INTERNSHIP  Maryland Nonprofits Before I began NPower’s Tech Fundamentals program, I was working as a campaign fellow for various political campaigns. I was referred by a family member who knew I was looking to boost my career. Since I have a background in networking from my time at Verizon, it was a no-brainer to apply to NPower. Having to balance work, studying and attending class was challenging. I thought I would fail at anything accelerated, but I was wrong! I enjoyed the challenge of trying to balance everything along with trying to become financially stable. After graduation, I would like to go back to school and obtain more certifications and eventually land a six-figure career, so I can give back and make other investments.

Learning the skills in the program and getting my certifications was difficult, but I stuck with it to get to the place I want to be.

Before NPower, I was working at Code in the Schools for four years. While there I helped implement Salesforce and worked on the company’s website. I chose to apply to the Tech Fundamentals program because I wanted to further my computer literacy. I found out about NPower through a coworker who knew that I was interested in working with computers. Balancing my two jobs was challenging while attending NPower and became very difficult. However, it was worth it. I got to share in an environment with people who were just as passionate about technology as I am. I also discovered that I enjoy the process of segmentation during networking, and as a result changed my technology path from software to networking. Soon, I want to secure a full-time career in the technology field that I enjoy. I plan to further my education as well by going back to college.

While waitressing at a local restaurant, I ran into a friend in the A/V technology field. After shadowing her at the Library of Congress, I was driven to learn more. Moving back to Baltimore County, I quickly discovered NPower. While on my journey at NPower, the staff went above and beyond what I signed up for. They provided basic knowledge of technology, invited innovative entrepreneurs to share their expertise and experience, helped with my challenges by providing resources and assistance, including clothing, budgeting, shelter, food and transportation. Throughout the program, I learned a lot about myself. Acknowledging the kind of learner that I am really helped when it came to adjusting to different environments. Upon completion, I plan to go through with my technical business venture and continue my education towards virtualization.

Before NPower, I applied for many positions that did not pan out because I lacked experience. During an informational interview, it was recommended I research free certification programs and I discovered NPower. Technology is one of my hobbies, and when building my first computer before the program, I began accumulating a list of questions that I could not answer. Within the first week at NPower half of my questions had been answered and my confidence for future opportunities was growing. NPower helped open doors to companies that I only dreamed about working for. I was able to not only network with classmates but also CEOs, CTOs, VPs and Directors. With my passion for cybersecurity and my degree in Middle Eastern studies and computer science, I would like to become a professional in the cyber counterterrorism field.

Before NPower, I was balancing two jobs as a commercial cleaner and quality control agent. I found out about the Tech Fundamentals program through a friend from another program in Baltimore City. I decided to apply because I always had a passion for IT and was obsessed with assembling objects. What I love most about my journey as a student, is learning how important technology is. Using virtual manipulatives in the classroom has increased my understanding. I can now take on a project that challenges me to learn the necessary material myself. After graduating from NPower, I would like to continue my education and gain experience in networking infrastructure.

It truly made a difference because I was able to learn new ideas easily. I also discovered that my primary interest in IT is hardware. After graduation, I plan to work and save money so that I can attend community college and obtain two degrees, one in computer engineering, and the other in electrical engineering. Before NPower, I was always considered the “tech person” in my household. I fixed all the computers, phones and gaming consoles. I always wanted to go back to school but was never sure of what to study. Then I decided to enroll in school for IT, but I did feel I belonged there; nor was I getting the extra in-class and hands-on learning to pique my interest in technology. When I decided to quit the program, I was referred to NPower. After enrolling, I quickly felt the staff’s support. Before NPower, I finished my first year at Anne Arundel Community College studying information assurance in cybersecurity. I have always loved IT, especially the ethical hacking side of it. Being able to find problems and fix them interests me. My brother graduated from the NPower program. The success that it brought him and overall support from my family motivated me to enter the program. During my time at NPower, I had the opportunity to meet and set up a solid circle of support that has helped me to develop as a young professional. NPower’s staff also helped me create a plan of action and to achieve my goals. The overflow of opportunities that this program brought me has humbled and inspired me to be a better version of myself. Before NPower, I was self-studying for the CompTIA A+ certification and working full-time as a customer service associate at Big Lots. However, I was referred to NPower through Indeed.com and it seemed to be precisely the type of training I needed to reach my goals. While attending NPower, I was surrounded by like-minded people working toward a common goal. I learned more about self-studying and about sacrificing my time to achieve my long-term and short-term goals. The only challenges faced were working part-time while finding a way to pursue extra certifications on my own. After graduating from the Tech Fundamentals program, I plan on continuing to advance my knowledge and eventually return to school.

The staff at NPower gave me the support needed to accomplish anything I want in life, and I am forever grateful for the opportunity. Before my time at NPower, I was in limbo with how I wanted to move forward with my life. I was working as a server, bartender, mentor, Lyft driver and entrepreneur while pursuing my degree. I had to take a step back and evaluate the best choice for me; which led me to enroll in NPower. The IT training was very hands-on and allowed me to pursue several certifications and provided me with real-world experience. The real gems were the guest speakers who volunteered during our professional development training. NPower brought in CEOs, entrepreneurs and great minds to share their wealth of knowledge with us. These speakers inspired me not only to resume my degree after graduation but to reach even higher. After completing my degree in 2019, I plan to create my own business with the skills, network and support NPower provided.

Before starting NPower, I was working a dead-end job and having trouble making ends meet. One day while mingling at my family reunion I ran into a cousin I hadn’t seen for a while. He mentioned that NPower helped changed his life. A month later, I interviewed at NPower in hopes of earning my first CompTIA certification. The following month, I earned it. My time at NPower gave me a chance to make changes in my life. It showed me that I’m not stuck and that there are options for a brighter future. After graduating, I want to continue earning additional certifications such as Cisco Certified Network Administrator. After settling into my new IT career, I intend to go back to school and finish my degree in biological sciences at UMBC.

COMPTIA IT FUNDAMENTALS+ CERTIFIED INTERNSHIP  NPower Before NPower, I was unemployed, and I didn’t have a plan for my life. In 2017, I randomly googled “free IT programs in Baltimore” and clicked on the link for NPower. I read about all that NPower has to offer, and I knew I needed to be in this program. When I went to apply, I felt overwhelmed by the questions and put my application to the side. A few months passed and 2018 approached. Again I was fed up with my situation and visited the NPower website once again and decided to finish applying. Since starting the Tech Fundamentals program, I’ve grown ambitiously stronger. While working, I pushed myself to attend class daily. After graduation, I look forward to one day becoming either a Java developer/programmer, network administrator or web developer with my own company.

Life for me was very different without the path that NPower mapped out. I was working as a caregiver part-time at an assisted living and memory care facility with little experience in the IT field. I found out about NPower through a friend of mine while attending college. I knew this was the path to ignite the flames in starting my career. During my time at NPower, my technical instructor, Calvin Greenway, taught us the fundamentals of IT with clarity and precision. He explained each topic thoroughly while giving us hands-on experience. I managed to retain a lot of information so that I can apply it in my future. There were many challenges, especially comprehending the given information, but through it all, I managed to strive for excellence and completed my tasks. Upon completing NPower, I plan on working in the IT field and going back to school to finish my degree in software development.
