ALUMNI SPEAKER BEDIAKO AMBONISYE
NPower Missouri, Tech Fundamentals Spring 2019 Field Technician, Mercy Technology Services
My interest in technology has been prevalent for most of my life. I have had many opportunities to gain knowledge in IT, but at NPower I was finally able to focus on it. Before the program, I was in California attempting to live a life beyond my means. My mother found out about their IT training classes and asked me to move back to St. Louis to get the skills I need to live the way that I want. After NPower, I plan to obtain more IT certifications and create a better life for myself and my family.

Before joining NPower, I was working as an assistant manager at a Subway restaurant. I contemplated quitting, so I researched opportunities that offered more direction. I wanted to learn more about information technology as a career. Fortunately, I found NPower through the International Institute. It has been a wonderful experience! I have been equipped with the basic knowledge to start my IT career. Plus, I have become more confident and technically sound in pursuit of my goals. After graduation, I plan to find a full-time tech position and further my education by earning certifications.

INTERNSHIP TBD Before NPower, I was a college student, but I didn’t like the idea of taking on debt just to get a job. I worried that I might not earn enough to pay off the debt. My passion for technology emerged when I learned how to create websites in high school. My mother and her coworker introduced me to NPower, having learned about it from an alumnus who worked at their school. They thought I’d benefit from the program, and they were so right! NPower helped me become more open-minded. I think more critically now. I am an introvert by nature, but the training challenged me to become more outgoing. After graduation, I plan to become a software developer. I want to create mobile apps and video games. One day, I hope to start my own gaming company.

INTERNSHIP TBD After graduating from high school, I worked at a nursing home. My passion for technology developed when I was in high school. I learned about NPower from my technology teacher at Gateway STEM High School. NPower taught me about how technology and computer systems work. Our instructor, Ms. Courtney, has been a great support in helping me understand the concepts and assignments. After graduation, I plan to use my skills to help my high school teacher and future students grow in the IT field.

Before enrolling in NPower, I graduated from college with a BS in computer science. I came across NPower during my search to continue my education in technology and acquire certifications. NPower taught me how to be more professional; it also helped me discover more than just software within IT. I learned much about the field and was happy to see that many of the concepts we learned correlated with the skills I use in my current position as a public technology assistant. I applied what I learned in class to help complete tasks at work; now I want to get more people interested in IT. My favorite part of the program was getting to know the other trainees. It was eye-opening to learn about our different backgrounds and realize we shared the common goal of becoming great and taking over the technology industry! After graduation, I plan to pursue my MS in information management systems at Texas Southern University, while working in the field as an IT analyst.

INTERNSHIP United Way of Greater St. Louis Before NPower, I was a part-time student at Forest Park Community College; I was also working as a full-time waiter. I’ve always had a passion for technology, but I decided to pursue a career in the field when a friend developed a network using Packet Tracer. I was fascinated! A few days later, I learned about the program from a friend. The timing was perfect. While in the program, I learned the ins and outs of hardware and software. I also improved my verbal communication and professional presentation skills. My favorite part of this amazing experience was being able to grow as a technologist and connect with the amazing staff. After graduation, I plan to obtain a full-time IT position and continue my education using the resources available to alumni.

My passion for technology developed at a young age. I began hooking up my game system when no one else could; then I transitioned into taking apart video game consoles to fix problems. Before I became an NPower student, I was a graduating senior at University City High School. I learned about the program through a teacher and a counselor. They handed me a flier; then a member of the NPower team came to speak to our class. My time in the program has taught me how to dress professionally, advocate for myself in a work environment, and network. My favorite part was the professional development days. It was nice to see my peers dressed up and ready to learn tools that will guide us in a better direction. I plan to expand my knowledge in IT and eventually work for a large gaming company.

Before NPower, I was looking for a full-time job to jumpstart my career. I wasn’t sure what field I wanted to go into, but I did know I had skills that could take me to the next level. I found the NPower during an online job search; it caught my attention because it offered opportunities that would provide direction. My passion for technology was always there, as part of the way I learn about the world. I was the kid who loved computers. My undergraduate studies led to an interest in cyber technology. NPower taught me to be patient and more focused on my goals. The professional development workshops gave me tools to strengthen my communication skills. I also learned to integrate CISCO packet tracing to configure routers. After I graduate, I plan to further my education and become an information security analyst and start my own security system.

INTERNSHIP School District of University City Before NPower, I was enjoying life as a teenager who had just graduated from high school. I didn’t have a job. My parents still took care of my monetary needs, but I knew that wouldn’t last forever. I had an interest in technology, but I didn’t know how to break into the field. During my graduation party, an older cousin told me about NPower and helped me get an interview. Since joining NPower, my life has changed for the better. I have matured. One of the hardest skills I learned was subnetting because it involves a lot of memorization. I now understand the value of hard work and what it takes to be a professional in the IT field. I am grateful to the NPower staff for their time, effort, and care, as well as to everyone who guided me along the way.

Before NPower, I was looking for a job to help make ends meet. I learned about the program online during a job search. The description sounded like just what I needed to jumpstart my journey. The program appealed to me because it was free and focused on IT and allowed me to further my career path with certifications. My passion for technology developed at a young age when my family got our first computer since then I have worked to enhance my technical literacy. If I don’t know how a device works, I research videos for solutions. My time at NPower gave me valuable skills, such as time management and self-accountability. My favorite part of the program was the in-depth training with routers and learning how to set them up. After I graduate, I plan to continue advancing my knowledge of technology.

Before I joined NPower, I was desperately searching for an opportunity to grow. I was working a full-time job and taking CNA classes, hoping to find my ultimate passion. I became interested in technology when I took a computer science class in middle school. Unfortunately, after that year, I was not exposed to another class like that in middle or high school. I learned about NPower through the Missouri Job Center. My caseworker directed me to the head of the youth department, who recognized my passion for technology and sent me to NPower. The program taught me how to use hardware, configure routers, and network. My favorite part was the professional development days. Those workshops enhanced my critical thinking skills and allowed me to self-reflect on practices and behaviors that had the power to alter my life’s path. After graduation, I plan to start an IT career and one day become a full-stack software engineer. I’ll also take other courses provided to NPower alumni, as well as study project management.

Before NPower, I was finishing my degree in software development and starting to apply for different positions. NPower has helped me learn how to better network and meet new people in the IT field. My favorite part of the program was the mock interview with employees from World Wide Technology. The opportunity helped me work through my anxiety with interviews. After graduation, I plan to secure an enjoyable career in IT and take advantage of the additional programs offered by NPower.

Before NPower, I was in stasis and living in Seattle, Washington. I had just graduated from high school but saw little to no future for myself professionally. When I moved to St. Louis, my cousin introduced me to NPower. It sounded too good to be true. He told me that my interest in IT could be developed into something more—not just a job, but a career. During the first few weeks, I was relieved to see things were actually looking up. I went from being sad all the time to learning new things, which gave me a sense of purpose. Now I can troubleshoot fundamental technical problems; plus, I have begun to acquire new technical skills. I enjoyed working towards my CCENT certification to begin a new pathway in IT networking. Being part of NPower encouraged me to come out of my shell and understand the importance of inclusion. After graduation, I want to continue studying to earn more certifications. I am still undecided as to which path to take in IT, but I know that I am headed in the right direction!

Before NPower, I was volunteering with the Urban League and the PotBangerz. I helped the organizations feed and clothe the homeless population in St. Louis. I also did performances around the city with a group called the St. Louis Story Stitchers, where I performed uplifting music and modeled being a good influence for youth. There, I met a remarkable alumna of NPower. and she introduced me to the program. It immediately sparked my interest. I was already interested in technology from attending multiple tech talks with my mother. Seeing people gathering to discuss technology that could change the world made me want to learn programming and contribute to changing the world for the better. After graduation, I plan to use my programming background to pursue a career in cybersecurity and eventually use my knowledge to teach in less fortunate communities. Providing opportunities to help others learn programming skills will allow many individuals in under-resourced areas the chance to uplift themselves and bring opportunities into communities that truly need it.
INTERNSHIP TBD I had just graduated from a technology high school when I heard about NPower through my Cisco Networking Academy instructor who had former students who participated in the program. My passion for technology began at a young age. Since I was 7 years old, I have always been interested in how the applications on our devices worked behind the screen. NPower helped me realize how dedicated I am to pursuing a career in technology. After graduation, I plan to focus on building connections during my internship that will eventually help me open a nonprofit organization for young women who are interested in IT careers.

I had so many ideas and inventions in my head and wondered how cool my life would be if one of my inventions came to life. I learned about NPower during a visit with SLATE. They gave me a list of companies that taught young adults trade skills. None of the programs on the list sparked my interest—until I saw NPower. The program taught me the technical skills I lacked. I also learned how to dress professionally, how to care for my mental wellness, and how to properly promote my achievements. When I was trying to figure out what to do for a career, I had no idea which path to take. My mother reminded me that I had been interested in technology since I was 10 years old. I remember fixing computers around the house and messing with the different TV settings to understand how they worked. With that in mind, I researched various programs and learned about NPower. This experience taught me the importance of developing soft skills. It also helped me work towards obtaining my IT Fundamentals, CCNA, and ITIL certifications. I truly enjoyed the entire program and cannot highlight my favorite part. Each component of the curriculum worked together for my good. After I graduate, I will pursue an IT career.

Before NPower, I was working a few different jobs, ranging from part-time custodian to full-time roofer. Eventually, I figured I wanted to have an actual foundation and establish a career path. Hearing about NPower from a family member was perfectly timed, and I applied immediately. I called multiple times until they assured me a slot for the next cohort! My time in the program helped me learn how to prioritize and organize the things that needed to get done. NPower helped me identify my true potential. It showed me that I am a hard worker and a decent, responsible young man. After graduation, I plan to incorporate the skills I’ve acquired to become a website developer and help create various short-form, fact-based news stories.

INTERNSHIP TBD I have always had a passion for helping others, but my passion for technology developed when I was a child. I was curious about how technology worked. My interest spanned from TVs to cars to computers and everything in between. Before I joined NPower, I was a lawncare freelancer. I learned about the program through a family member who cared about my future and wanted me to become the best version of myself. My time at NPower taught me how to troubleshoot IT issues in the real world. My favorite parts of the program were learning about subnetting and using my professional development skills to grow both socially and professionally. After graduation, I plan to use my new skills to help change many people’s lives by starting a successful IT career.

I was working to complete my BS in criminal justice and sociology before I learned about NPower. While in school, I gained internship experience in the criminal justice field. With each opportunity, I learned that I could not see myself pursuing criminal justice as a career. I looked for guidance from my fraternity’s advisor, who helped me discover a passion for technology. He gave me IT-related assignments for my organization that I found to be intriguing and motivating. Those assignments inspired me to self-study and research opportunities to fulfill my aspiration of an IT career. That is when I discovered NPower. It gave me the jumpstart I needed to reach for my new goals. The program helped me create new relationships, advanced my networking skills, and introduced me to a new field of interest, software engineering.

Before I joined NPower, I was working at Walmart but looking for a new job. I worked with STL Youth Jobs to find a new position. I went on several interviews, but I was not getting any callbacks. Fortunately, they introduced me to NPower and things began to change. Since being a part of this program, I have become more knowledgeable about professional development skills such as leadership and problem-solving. A technical highlight was learning computer networking. Thank you, NPower, for helping me gain the skills I needed to jumpstart my IT career!

INTERNSHIP City of St. Louis Treasurer’s Office Before the NPower program, I was an employee at MasterCard. I found my love for technology while interacting with a robot that could have a conversation with anyone and answer questions. It quickly grew from a small interest to a burning passion. I saw the many ways IT can be used to transform common things into a life-changing profession. I learned about the NPower program through a family friend. My experience taught me how the back end of technology actually works. After this program, I plan to pursue a career in tech, focused on inclusion and diversity. I am happy to be an ambassador for the program and a graduate of cohort 6.

Before I was a student at NPower, I was a part-time clerk at QuikTrip. I heard about the program through my sister who is now an alumna. My passion for technology developed when I realized that the field was always changing and that I did not have to be a super “techie” to pursue a career in the industry. My time at NPower helped me learn how to step out of my comfort zone and learn something new. My favorite part of the experience was establishing relationships with future IT professionals. After graduation, I plan to start my career in IT as a help-desk professional. My ultimate goal is to become a business owner.

After I graduated from high school, I did not know what I wanted to do career-wise. I was just hired at Chick-fil-A as a team member where I helped cook and box chicken. A family friend told my mom about the technology program for young adults; I later learned that it was NPower. I never had a passion for technology before this experience. Since I was a kid, I’ve wanted to know how game consoles and computers work. NPower introduced me to a field that is always changing and growing. I know that there are many career opportunities in IT. My time in the program challenged me to open up instead of always being the quiet kid in the back of the class. My favorite part of the program was learning more about technology and interacting with my classmates. After graduation, I plan to enroll in robotics classes.
INTERNSHIP Boys Hope Girls Hope International Social entrepreneurship has always been my North Star. Before joining NPower, I was involved in the STL start-up community with a BS in political science, trying to make a positive impact in higher education. I applied to NPower to launch my own tech career and gain an understanding of how to build software. Since joining the program, I have learned how to build databases, gained project management theory, and learned more about software. My tech start-up has joined the STL Chamber of Commerce Diverse Business Accelerator, won a grant from the Balsa Foundation, and completed the Washington University Financial Metrics Clinic. After graduation, I plan to apply for investments from tech and social entrepreneurship accelerators, as well launch our MVP in 2020. I want to thank NPower for the introduction to formal project management education, the knowledge of software architecture, and the social support needed for my professional development.

Before NPower, I was a volunteer at a help desk where I went to high school. I had no idea what I wanted to do in life until I remembered that NPower came to my school and did a presentation. That is when I realized I wanted to pursue a career in IT. Through the program, I learned how to network and developed a growth mindset. My favorite part of the program was meeting new people and feeling like I was part of something I enjoyed doing. After graduation, I plan to start my career in IT then come back to volunteer with NPower to help with the next class.

I spent all four years of high school working at the St. Louis Science Center. I had a passion for technology because of its use in today’s world and how fast the field is growing. My brother Josh, an alumnus of Cohort 2, was able to grow and groom himself into a technical professional through Tech Fundamentals. I was curious to see if I could benefit as well. During my time in the program, I have become more effective with my soft skills. I also learned how to be professional in a variety of settings. What I enjoyed most was learning Packet Tracer. At first, it was difficult, but once I got the hang of it, I felt like a technical wizard. After graduation, I plan to stay on track. I look forward to learning every day from the professional and technical side of my career.
INTERNSHIP Ferguson-Florissant School District Before NPower, I was trying to find my passion. I felt stuck at a dead-end job because I got comfortable with the flexibility that it allowed. I learned about NPower through a friend who graduated with Cohort 5. At first, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to join the program because I doubted how well I would do understanding the material and technical concepts. However, my time in the program has helped me discover more about what I truly want out of life and from the IT world. I realized the IT world would be a great foundation to start my own business one day. After graduation, I plan to explore ways to integrate my love for music with my new passion for IT.

Prior to NPower, I was working for an event-planning company. It was fulfilling, but I couldn’t sustain my lifestyle with what I earned there. I learned about NPower through a family member who had just completed the program. At the time I had just signed up for a two-year tech course, but NPower seemed like a better fit because it was free and took less time to complete. Technology has always been part of my life. As a child, my father and I would build computers from scratch. After graduating from this amazing program, I want to pursue a career as either a network engineer or a software program engineer. I also want to use my skills to help my family and friends work on projects that improve technology and internet connectivity in rural areas of the Caribbean islands and Africa.

Before NPower, I had been looking for a job. After about a year with no luck, I remembered that I kept the number of an NPower representative who had visited my high school during my senior year. My initial interest in information technology began with my father teaching me how to build a computer. Attending the classes at NPower bolstered my previous computer knowledge and gave me further insight into the field of IT. The most helpful part of the program was the professional development Fridays, which provided me with the skills to obtain and keep a job. After graduation, I plan to continue learning so that I can thrive as a professional in the technology field.

I’ve always had a passion for technology, but I never quite knew how to break into the field without completing a college degree. Thanks to this program, not only have I developed valuable technical skills, but I have also developed significantly as a professional. NPower taught me invaluable soft and hard skills that will undoubtedly allow me to excel in the workplace. Upon graduating, I am looking forward to beginning my IT career, pursuing more certifications, and completing my degree in cybersecurity. Thanks to NPower, I finally have the confidence to passionately pursue my aspirations!

Before I was an NPower student, I was working a dead-end job with no opportunities for growth. I attempted to join Claim Academy, but I later became discouraged because I couldn’t afford the program. My mother noticed my interest in IT-related career paths and suggested NPower. My experience has helped me become a more confident interviewee, as well as more comfortable networking with professionals. The lessons I valued the most were the ones that focused on the importance of developing both soft and hard skills to be a well-rounded technologist. After graduation, I plan to pursue a career in cybersecurity through more extensive education.

Before I graduated from high school, my CISCO networking instructor introduced me to NPower. I have always had a passion for technology, so pursuing a career in the industry was a natural fit. Through NPower, I learned how to advocate for myself professionally. Working in technology is not just having the right skill set, it’s also about being able to work in teams with different types of people. After graduation, I plan to start my IT career at an entry-level job as a technician and then return to NPower to pursue cybersecurity.

INTERNSHIP TBD Before I joined NPower, I was graduating from high school. I had my mind set on a career in music, film design, theatre, and acting, but I was unsure how to enter the arts. I decided to start a career in IT to fund my dreams and help me explore my existing curiosity about technology. I have always had a passion for computers. As kids, my brother and I created our own video game private server. There was just something about technology that caught my attention! My mom introduced me to NPower. Her computer broke down, and an NPower student fixed it and told her about the program. This experience has taught me how to work with others, whether in the workplace or just hanging with new friends. My favorite part is that it is free! All you need to do is be willing to learn. After I graduate, I plan to work in IT for a year and broaden my knowledge through earning additional certifications.

Since joining NPower I have learned many hard and soft skills that will help me work through different situations in the workplace that I may encounter. After graduation, I plan to acquire a full-time IT job as well as further my knowledge by obtaining more certifications and attending NPower’s Cybersecurity program. My main goal is to become a cybersecurity specialist and work for the CIA.
