Stephen Murphy is Accenture’s Technology Services Lead for Financial Services globally. He has experience leading technology programs from strategy and assessment, transformation roadmap and execution, and managed services. Stephen was previously Accenture’s Technology Consulting Lead for Financial Services North America and Infrastructure Services Lead for North America. He has published several thought leadership pieces over the past years on the Journey to Cloud in the Financial Services industry. He has led and contributed to many roundtable conversations to advance collaboration and best practices among global Cloud practitioners. Stephen has served some of Accenture’s largest clients including Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, and United HealthGroup. He holds a degree in Cognitive Science from Dartmouth College, and represents Accenture on the Board of NPower.

The Cloud Computing program was designed to move NPower alumni beyond basic tech support knowledge to learn the fundamentals of cloud architecture and how to implement a cloud strategy across a variety of industries. The 2018 pilot program was funded by Accenture, Amazon Web Services, Ira W. DeCamp Foundation and the Heckscher Foundation. We are proud to share that our inaugural NPower Cloud Computing class achieved an impressive 88% retention rate. The NPower Cloud Computing program includes mobility technology learning modules courtesy of the Cisco Networking Academy.

I previously worked at Bank of America, collaborating closely with company executives and financial traders. Currently, I have been supporting Forrest Solutions IT clients in the field for over a year and now work at the company headquarters. Upon completing the NPower Cloud Computing program, I was able to obtain my AWS Solutions Architect certification and broaden my views on cloud computing. Having had some experience working in a Network Operations Center, the Cloud Computing program was a good transition. Understanding how servers are developed and how EC2 instances are set up gave me more insight into specific steps, processes and security in the cloud. I gained valuable hands-on experience throughout this course. Upon completion, I hope to use these valuable skills and my experiences as a senior noncommissioned officer in management to land a full-time position. I am positioning myself to have another exciting career in IT. While it has been a struggle transitioning from the military into IT, I am thankful for NPower for creating this bridge for me and other veterans.

During the program, I utilized my certifications while interning at Deloitte and was able to find an opportunity with Ernst & Young as a TES Technologist 1. I am currently working at the company as the lead refresh coordinator, and after completing the Cloud Computing program, I am looking to transition to the company’s advisory team and be a part of Ernst & Young’s digital transformation.

ALUMNI OF Tech Fundamentals Spring 2018 Before NPower, I was struggling to find a job within my field in New York City. I was getting rejected left and right despite having a good amount of experience in IT from Puerto Rico. One of the people who I interviewed with told me about three free programs that might help get me certified and find a job quicker. I applied to NPower and met a lot of good people, learned new skills and by the end of it, I had a new job as an IT manager for PSAV working out of five-star hotels. Today I still hold that same position and have returned to NPower to further my education by studying to be an AWS Solutions Architect. I was fortunate enough to intern at CBS Corporation for seven weeks which was extended into a full-time job in under a year. ALUMNI OF Tech Fundamentals Spring 2017 I did not hesitate to apply when I found out that NPower was offering a Cloud Computing class. After I received my A+ certification, I was working as a desktop technician at a hospital for more than a year. My current job was becoming stale and I was yearning for new IT knowledge. I knew nothing about cloud computing services when I first heard of it. I researched the benefits of businesses using the cloud and their current demand for it. I was excited when I saw all the associated career opportunities that the AWS certification provides. In this course, I am learning a lot from the online video lectures, in-class labs, textbook readings and practice questions. The labs are stimulating because we are taught hands-on how to navigate the AWS Console and type Linux commands. A challenge for me was balancing working 40+ hours while dedicating time towards studying the class material. With the new skills I have obtained, I aim for a business/system analyst or network admin position. I am genuinely grateful for the support NPower provides like networking, guest speakers and professional development workshops that can further enhance my career goals.

Before NPower’s Cloud Computing program I was looking for a free way to learn Amazon Web Services and study for the Solutions Architect certification. I felt that after spending over five years working in the IT support side of technology, I needed to make a change. Earning this certification will give a boost to my IT career and push me in a new exciting direction. During the Cloud Computing program, I was super excited to gain hands-on experience working on labs with our instructor Javaid. His knowledge and patience were beneficial to the class and me. I was also enthusiastic about the professional development classes where we got a chance to learn how to use our certification to land a new job, and meeting people with experience working with Amazon Web Services. My goal is to pass the certification exam and attain an entry-level cloud computing job. After working in the field for a year, and getting more experience, I plan on studying for the for the developer certification. I also want to earn my Linux+ certification.

NPower, thank you for helping me to continue growing in my career. It was not long ago when I graduated from Tech Fundamentals. After I stopped attending school, I thought I was going to become another statistic, and began working in a traditional 9 to 5 job to earn a living. I remember wondering if moving from full-time to a part-time position was the right decision to make in order to attend NPower and successfully graduate from the program. Thank God, it was the best decision I could have ever made because it completely changed my life. I obtained my CompTIA A+ certification and was placed at Citi to intern at the Network Infrastructure Department. I am currently working in the same department allowing me to help my family in Peru. Earning my AWS Solutions Architect Associate certification will significantly contribute to my ultimate goal to become a cybersecurity analyst/engineer. Thank you, NPower for everything!

ALUMNI OF Tech Fundamentals Fall 2014 I work as a business analyst/project manager at Morgan Stanley, facilitating the implementation of a voice authentication technology tool into Morgan Stanley call center platforms. This project transformed client authentication workflows and provided heightened security features. Before working at Morgan Stanley, I completed my bachelor’s degree in international studies at Manhattanville College. I held an internship as a United Nations representative and worked in nonprofit before achieving my CompTIA A+ certification in the NPower Tech Fundamentals program. After graduating from the NPower’s Tech Fundamentals program, I’ve gained much experience working at an MSP provider, from helpdesk support to network administrator. I was able to apply the knowledge I was taught, earn new skills and face new challenges in this era of IT. I started to get interested in areas such as cloud computing and cybersecurity, and then heard NPower would host their first Cloud Computing class. I applied to it right away and was accepted. This program has been challenging as we were the pilot class, and it demanded a lot of self-motivation, organization and dedication to get through the curriculum. Thanks to our instructor Javaid, I was able to keep up to date with the learning material and push myself to practice and understand every aspect of the course. Working full time and adding 20 hours in my weekly schedule was not easy. The hunger for learning new technologies and growth in my professional career motivated me to achieve my AWS Solutions Architect certification. Now, I will be ready to start this new journey.

I always wanted to pursue a career in technology, but events lead me away from school. A friend introduced me to the program and told me about how NPower changed her life in less than six months. After doing further research and getting amazing advice from numerous people, I decided NPower was the most significant chance I had to pursue the career I always dreamed of, and it has met every expectation. My experience at NPower was like no other; the lessons, core values and soft skills taught at the program are invaluable. After graduating from the Tech Fundamentals program, I was hired by NPower to be an assistant instructor. The experience I gained from that role and the support NPower provided was priceless. I earned a job at KKR through NPower and had a wonderful experience there. The class was challenging, but through stellar teaching and hard work I know I will pass this certification and start my career in cloud computing.

The Cloud Computing program is my second NPower class. Before this, I attended the TechCareer Accelerator program, and it brought me professional success ever since. I was lucky enough to get into the TCA class and earned my ServiceNow System Administration certification, and started my internship at an investment firm. ServiceNow has propelled me into a career working closely with business heads. I’ve realized the importance of business knowledge within any career and recently changed jobs to reflect this realization. For the past few months, I’ve taken on the role of being a ServiceNow process improvement engineer at a nonprofit. This role has also exposed me to numerous IT aspects including infrastructure and security which makes this class even more relatable. After completion of the AWS Solutions Architect certification, I’d like to continue working in cloud computing and utilize both ServiceNow and AWS skills.

My goal was to be accepted into the Young Adult Internship Program to help me find and keep a job. Thanks to the lessons from both of these organizations, I was hired at the World Trade Center, but I knew I wanted more. I learned about NPower from a friend and applied as soon as I could. I was accepted into NPower's Tech Fundamentals program where I received my CompTIA A+ certification and given the opportunity by NPower to become an instructor. I always wanted to be a teacher, and it was an excellent chance to give back to young people like me. Now with the Cloud Computing program behind me, I hope to be able to offer even more back to the NPower classes to come.

Before NPower, my knowledge of computers was limited to removing viruses. During the day, I would go to school for computer programming and was paying my way as a busser. From bringing dirty dishes to the dishwasher to cleaning tables, I learned how much a dollar is worth. My experience in NPower’s Tech Fundamentals program prepared me for what was to come. From the tough love lesson by our instructor to the in-depth information they offered, it assisted me to get to where I am today. After that, I attended a certification class assuming that I would have that same experience. Unfortunately, it was nothing like NPower’s depth of knowledge, nor assistance after the course to further my career. I wound up contacting NPower for help after obtaining my Network+ certification, and I had an interview that would change my life forever. That interview led to a full-time job where I fly to London at least once a year and I’m supporting a New York office all by myself. I can’t thank NPower enough for facilitating the chance to make my dreams come true.

ALUMNI OF Tech Fundamentals Fall 2015 & Cybersecurity Spring 2016 I joined NPower to learn the fundamentals of information technology and cybersecurity and get industry experience. The Cloud Computing program has been very insightful. I learned how the cloud infrastructure worked and became familiar with all of Amazon’s specific terminology. Learning cloud computing requires much hands-on practice deploying virtual machines in private clouds, dividing the network into subnets and trying out the various services like the S3 bucket and Lambda. I am hoping that the cloud-specific skills that I learn in this course will eventually help me secure a job as a Solutions Architect or Cloud Security Engineer. I currently hold the CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+ and GIAC Security Essentials certifications and intend to pass the AWS Solutions Architect certification as well.

After graduating with a Finance degree and managing my own business for 7 years, I needed to embark on a new career path. I was eager to learn anything and everything pertaining to technology, but I was lost on finding an entry point. While studying at a library, I stumbled upon a flier advertising NPower’s Tech Career Accelerator program. I was intrigued, yet skeptical due to the free nature of this opportunity. After further research and meeting with the NPower staff, I became a believer and joined the NPower program. NPower provided me the guidance I desperately needed, in addition to the free comprehensive classroom tech training and networking opportunities. Using the blueprint provided by NPower, I was able to achieve certifications in ITIL, ServiceNow System Administrator, CompTIA A+, Cisco Certified Network Administrator and most recently, AWS Certified Solutions Architect. I have nothing but appreciation for the NPower staff for their knowledge and support in my journey to become complete IT professional.

ALUMNI OF Tech Fundamentals Spring 2017 Growing up I had dreams of being a famous athlete, but nothing came ahead of having an impact in the tech world. I was first introduced to technology by my uncle who had many computers around the house that didn’t work. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing, but I learned many solutions by trying different scenarios. After successfully getting them to work, I knew I was onto something. I was finally good at something other than sports. My passion for sports quickly shifted to computers, and I saw a place for me in technology. I went through many trade programs and attended several college courses to gain the knowledge to be successful in the field. Unfortunately, because of financial difficulties, I had to leave school to get a job. During this time, I ran into a friend who told me about NPower. I passed my CompTIA A+ certification with the help from NPower. NPower answered my prayers when they informed me that they were starting up a Cloud Computing course. The program has given me an opportunity to be someone in life; it gave me hope.

Before my acceptance in the Cloud Computing course, I worked at Bank of America assisting the global markets and site support team as a contracted desktop support technician and briefly as a contracted business analyst. My purpose for applying to the program was to expand my skill set and achieve career growth by combining all that I had learned in the previous programs with my education and work experience. The Cloud Computing program stood out to me in that it was the way of the future and would allow me to expand my previously acquired certifications in ITIL and ServiceNow. Not to mention it was hosted by NPower, which I was familiar with and knew would have a surplus of resources and communal support that help me be successful.
