ALUMNI SPEAKER RAHMEL HUNTER
NPower New York, Cybersecurity Spring 2018 SOC Analyst, NBC Universal Media, LLC
“Before NPower, I was working as an help desk technician. I had an idea of where I wanted to go, but no plan of attack. NPower didn’t take me by the hand and baby me. Instead they pointed me to a path and then showed me how to pave the road. Through hard work and determination, I finished the Cybersecurity program and eventually was hired by NBC as a SOC Analyst. NPower continues to help me strengthen my skills, as I work my way through their Cloud Computing program. I have a better understanding of the tech industry and the tools I need to expand my career possibilities”
CLASS SPEAKER AFSANA ISLAM
NPower New York, Cybersecurity Spring 2019
“We live in a highly advanced time period. If technology has taught me anything, it’s that there is no one way of accomplishing things. So whatever your wish is to the universe, whatever goals and dreams you have... as long as you don’t give up when you’re tired and keep working hard when you feel you’ve tried everything, the possibilities will truly be endless!”

INTERNSHIP CBS Before I joined the Cybersecurity program, I worked in several healthcare, education and retail positions. I applied to the program because it allowed me to combine my work and life experiences into one career. During the program, I was constantly challenged with troubleshooting issues during my lab projects. Through this class, I’ve gained a deeper interest in both the technical and social aspects of penetration testing and I plan to specialize in this field.
BUNMI ADENIRAN
INTERNSHIP Dun & Bradstreet After graduating from a program as a correctional officer, I grew unsatisfied with my career choice. I had always been interested in technology since I was a kid, but never attempted to turn it into a career. After making the difficult decision to leave the law enforcement sector, I tried finding a technology internship that would enhance my knowledge and help me grow professionally. When I first discovered NPower, I thought this opportunity was too good to be true. After completing the Tech Fundamentals program and interning with KPMG, I learned more than I could ever have imagined. I leveraged my skills into practical use for my next position at RICOH. I decided that I wanted to learn about cybersecurity and help make a difference. Joining the Cybersecurity program was the best decision I ever made. The knowledge I gained has prepared me for practical use of cyber tools and the methodologies used daily by professionals. After earning my CompTIA Security+ certification and gaining other skills, I developed a deeper understanding of how paramount security is in the tech field. Being a part of this program is truly an honor and I am forever indebted to NPower for this life-changing opportunity.

I have always had an interest in forensics and digital cybercrime, but lacked the resources to get my foot in the door and start my career. Underemployed and working in retail hospitality, I discovered NPower’s Tech Fundamentals program. I learned networking skills by earning my CompTIA A+ certification and became fascinated with cybersecurity. After my internship at Citi as a program and project manager, I seized the opportunity to learn more and applied to NPower’s Cybersecurity program. I developed greater confidence and found my niche as a professional in the cybersecurity field. I absorbed all that I learned, including labs and advice from guest speakers. Through hard work and determination, I earned my CompTIA Security+ certification. I am proud of my accomplishments and will continue to strengthen my knowledge and skillsets as I climb the ladder to success. I will adamantly strive for greater excellence, especially in this growing field of cybersecurity, where I will remain challenged and continue to explore my passion in helping others.
INTERNSHIP Broadridge Before joining NPower’s Cybersecurity class, I was part of the News Technology Support Team at NBC Universal. It was a great experience, but I wanted more and cybersecurity seemed to be the field that could provide that. I kept seeing stories about big data breaches that could have been prevented if the proper actions were taken. Those stories made me realize that I could be part of a team that could help to prevent those breaches. High expectations were set at the start of class. I was excited to learn new things and to interact with the guest speakers. Learning how to implement a virtual network in the matter of a few minutes through Amazon Web Services was a great way to begin the course. After all of the topics that we have covered and the work we have completed, my enthusiasm has only grown. I am excited to see where this cybersecurity path will take me.

I have been passionate about technology for as long as I can remember, but a couple of years ago I experienced the worst hacking of my life. I was asleep and my phone kept sending me alerts. When I picked up my phone, the notifications said “you have exceeded your purchase limit for your credit card account”. I panicked and quickly got up and checked my computer to find out the issue. It turned out that I was a victim of a remote access trojan (RAT attack). This type of attack allows unwanted individuals unfettered access to your system to steal your identity, banking information and medical information. My situation was eventually rectified, but it still didn’t sit well with me. I joined the Cybersecurity class to increase my knowledge of the multiple cybersecurity threats and to protect myself and those around me from the dangers of those threats.
INTERNSHIP Citi Before NPower, I was working in a desktop support position and realized there was no career advancement in this role. After attending a cybersecurity info session, I was quickly accepted into the program. It was an easy decision and with the support of my manager, I resigned and decided to pursue cybersecurity. My grandfather, one of my main supporters, passed away a few weeks into the program. I was devastated but remained persistent. Thanks to NPower and their ongoing support, I was given the tools to succeed in class and was pushed to pursue other certifications. I will continue to learn practically, as theories only take you so far. After graduation, I plan to stay knowledgeable about cybersecurity advancements within the technology field. I will utilize all the resources available to become a better person, technologist and cybersecurity expert than I was the day before. I refuse to bring just another face to any company’s team— I want to make a lasting impact.

Before NPower, I was working at a dental office and struggling to find career direction. I knew that I was a capable and a fast learner, but I had no confidence or professional network to join the tech field. If somebody told me last year that I would be attending an intensive 26-week cybersecurity program, I would have laughed. During my time as a Tech Fundamentals’ student, I found myself curious and engaged in all things cyber. With advice and support from the staff, I realized cybersecurity was the right path for me. During the Cybersecurity program, I was given the tools to sharpen my skills, elevate my credentials and determine the best path for my career. The hands-on cloud security and scripting instruction will set me apart from other candidates and has given me confidence in my skills. I am grateful to have a better chance at a career that I am passionate about and I owe it all to the staff at NPower.
INTERNSHIP TBD Before NPower, I was looking for direction and wondering what the future may hold. One day while taking a CIS course, I remembered hearing about organizations prepping the next generation through IT and cybersecurity education for little to no cost. That same week I discovered NPower’s Tech Fundamentals program and knew that I had made the right decision as soon as I stepped into the classroom. After graduating from the Tech Fundamentals program, I decided to join the Cybersecurity program. Through the program, I have taken my knowledge and experience to the next level. NPower has definitely changed my career goals from becoming a desktop support technician to a cybersecurity professional.

I was born with a passion for problem solving, a drive for curiosity and a knack for anything electronic. As a young kid, I curiously watched my uncle fix computers, cellphones, and gaming consoles. I instantly fell in love and made it my goal to learn and help in any way I could. Once I discovered NPower, it changed my life and opened more doors than I knew existed! I was able to turn my passion into a career after the Tech Fundamentals program and grew in the field by experiencing opportunities and executing tasks to broaden my knowledge and capabilities. After a year, I decided that I wanted to know more and to push myself beyond a help-desk position. I decided to join the Cybersecurity class and am so happy with that decision. NPower has improved my life more than once and I can’t wait to see where I end up, thanks to their support!
INTERNSHIP CBS Prior to joining NPower’s Cybersecurity program, I was working at Agilent Solutions Integration as a field technician. I gained valuable, hands-on experience performing various repairs, while providing great customer service for clients. I developed a passion for assisting users and educating them on various ways to protect their devices. Learning more about software tools and their capabilities and impact encouraged me to further explore software, but I was uncertain of where to start. Thankfully, NPower was offering a cybersecurity program and I decided to enroll. The program has enriched my knowledge of software, exposed me to various impactful resources and introduced me to professionals who have shared their experiences in the cybersecurity field. Without NPower, I would not have gained the hands-on experience needed to thrive in cybersecurity or meet the amazing individuals who helped guide me on my path to reaching my career goal.

Before NPower, I had technical knowledge but I knew there were many more practical skills to learn. While deciding how I wanted to further my education, I came across NPower. I am very grateful I joined NPower’s Tech Fundamentals program. Upon completing Tech Fundamentals, I worked for 18 months as a Technical Support Representative at Altice USA. My experience there encouraged me to learn more and I decided to enroll in the Cybersecurity program. The rigorous training prepared me for the CompTIA Security+ exam. Through the hands-on labs, I learned security tools (Metasploit, Wireshark) and security best practices to implement into the field. I developed character, confidence, and most importantly, ways to hone my skills in the cybersecurity field. I am honored to have had such an amazing opportunity and I am forever thankful to the NPower family.
INTERNSHIP Bloomberg I’ve always had a passion for technology but never thought to pursue it as a career. I had reached a career roadblock and was unsure of how to proceed in my job search. My friend introduced me to NPower. I put job searching on hold and decided to join. NPower reignited my passion for technology and showed me a career path that I could truly enjoy and excel in. I had prior experience in computer networking through dabbling in network configurations at home and at work. I became concerned about the security of these devices and realized the implications that a data breach could impose. After completing the NPower Tech Fundamentals program, the Cybersecurity program became my next goal. These programs have advanced my skills tremendously by providing me with hands-on experience and a clear understanding of the industry. I was exposed to a wide range of career paths and opportunities to network with industry professionals through multiple site visits and guest lecturers. I am truly grateful for the opportunities NPower provided and am blessed to have been a part of the program.

I had always been interested in technology and I learned a lot about HTML, CSS, Java, and JavaScript. I realized that I could use what I’ve learned to pursue a job or internship within the field of design or technology. I struggled finding employment and my interviewing skills needed improvement. To pay the bills, I started working freelance gigs and jobs that I had no interest in. I discovered an NPower posting on a recruitment site. I took a leap of faith and was accepted into the program. I gained many technical and professional skills through NPower. I’ve had my fair share of failure but it hasn’t held me back; it has only made me more determined to succeed in this high-demand field of IT.
INTERNSHIP TBD I was working two jobs just to make ends meet. I wanted to find a costeffective way to continue my education, earn technical certifications, and become a more marketable job seeker. I learned about NPower through a friend, who graduated and had received certifications and a wealth of knowledge and experience—all for free. It is an opportunity where you can restart your entire life even after hitting rock bottom. The program taught me how to apply the same energy to my professional work and personal life. I had always paid special attention to security in every aspect of life. After discovering cybersecurity, I knew I had found my calling. NPower helped me develop impactful relationships with IT professionals. One of the most valuable opportunities NPower provides is the opportunity to network with many different professionals at highly respected companies. I will never forget my peers, who grew with me and worked hard to achieve our goals.

Before NPower, I wasn’t very career oriented. A friend referred me to NPower and I was instantly interested. While technology is an advancing field, I had little knowledge of how to break in. I wanted to learn more about the tech industry and what it had to offer. When I first joined NPower, I wasn’t confident and had a hard time believing in myself. During my time in Tech Fundamentals, my instructor, Kashif, helped me become a better, more focused version of myself. After graduation, I waited a year to apply to the NPower Cybersecurity program. Getting accepted meant a lot because it was an opportunity for me to really prove myself. I was confident and more eager and willing to learn. My time in the Cybersecurity program was the best experience I ever had. Our instructor, Javaid, delivered intensive technical knowledge while also inspiring us to become hungry and self-starting individuals. It’s often said that “practice defeats imposter syndrome” and that’s exactly what helped me become more confident in myself in the classroom. Through rigorous practice and lab work, I discovered what it means to be a cybersecurity professional.
INTERNSHIP Citi I will forever be grateful for the opportunities that NPower has given to me during my time in the Tech Fundamentals and Cybersecurity programs. Before joining NPower, I had a love for technology and technical competency. I would always push myself to improve a system or to fix any technical problems that I could find. Even with my love for technology, I did not have a clear career path. During the Tech Fundamentals program, I realized that I was passionate about cybersecurity, cloud computing and machine learning. I was so fortunate to have been accepted into the Cybersecurity program and to learn advanced cybersecurity, cloud computing and coding skills. I was fascinated by how all these areas correlate. With this passion, I will push myself and strive for success and embrace challenges wherever I go.

Through networking, I gained valuable insight about what it takes to become a cybersecurity professional. NPower has given me the foundation I need to build a successful career in cybersecurity. I look forward to enhancing my skills and expanding my knowledge in the IT field. Nobody knows what the future holds or the potential it has, but my future feels infinite.

As a U.S. Navy veteran, I wanted to take the knowledge I had learned and apply it to the Information Technology field. I was introduced to NPower’s Jersey City Tech Fundamentals program in 2016. Learning about the critical components of software and hardware used daily to conduct operations inspired me to complete my CompTIA A+ certification. I leveraged my experience to secure an internship with Bank of America and was fascinated by the high-volume tech environment. I decided to enrich my knowledge by attending NPower’s Cybersecurity program. During the intensive 14 week in-class training, I delved beyond the outlined syllabus. With dedicated, hard work and hands-on experience, I was accepted into First Data’s elite cybersecurity initiative.
INTERNSHIP NBC Before joining NPower’s Cybersecurity Program, I started re-evaluating my previous work experience to consider which career path I should follow. Reflecting on my previous help desk support position, which I obtained through NPower’s Tech fundamentals program, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in IT. The Cybersecurity program came at the perfect time. This experience was more than just obtaining a Security+ certification; it was a program focused on developing the skills needed to have a successful cybersecurity career. The staff set initial expectations that it wasn’t going to be an easy ride, but if we gave it our best effort, it would all come to fruition. I am beyond grateful to NPower for giving me this opportunity to grow mentally and professionally.

Although I knew that I wanted an IT career, I had no means to pursue it. I discovered NPower through an acquaintance. After completing the Tech Fundamentals program, I was accepted into the Cybersecurity program shortly after. Throughout the 14-week period, I learned and accomplished many things I never envisioned completing within that short time. Along with learning areas of security, I gained an interest in cloud computing. Although I had previous experience with programming, I gained a true love and understanding of different languages and frameworks such as Python, Shell Scripting and PowerShell through the program.
