ALUMNI SPEAKER RAYMOND ROBINSON, JR. NPower Texas, Tech Fundamentals Fall 2018 Infrastructure Delivery Manager, Citi
“One of the amazing things about NPower, aside from it being completely free for veterans and their spouses, is how much total training you receive to transition from military to the workforce.” Raymond Robinson joined the U.S. Army after graduating from high school at age 17. He wasn’t ready to be a full-time college student, so he decided to serve the country from 2000 until he retired in 2016 as an airborne infantry senior non-commissioned officer. Following retirement, he worked in commercial trucking and realized there was no future career in this position. Though he never had an interest in computers or technology, he took NPower’s Tech Fundamentals Program as a learning experience and as something that he could build a successful and meaningful career upon. He learned how to conduct himself in interviews and dress for success. He passed both the initial and subsequent interviews at Citigroup, and he was selected for an internship and a post-internship contract. Currently, he is an IT project manager with Cloud Infrastructure Services, a part of the Citi Technology Infrastructure.

SHAWN MONEY Winston-Salem, NC U.S. Navy Served 10 Years
After serving ten years in the Navy nuclear field, I transitioned to the commercial nuclear power industry. My career led me to work for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) as a health physics inspector. During my time with the NRC, I could no longer perform inspections, due to the intense physical demands of the job. Leaving the NRC meant leaving great benefits and a high salary that I needed to support my family of nine. That’s when I discovered the NPower website. It was no coincidence that I found a program that was starting soon after my NRC career ended, in a field which had always intrigued me. I graduated from the NPower Tech Fundamentals program and received my CompTIA A+ certification. Currently, I work for Ernst & Young as an RSA Archer administrator.
JOB IN THE MILITARY Network Technician DUTY STATION / DEPLOYMENTS Fort Bragg, NC DECORATIONS Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal My experience in the Army prepared me for a job as a corporate technical trainer. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the programming or coding skills needed to design these types of courses. After being laid off, I was job searching and also looking for a way to gain the skills I lacked. That’s when I discovered the NPower coding class. With the skills I have learned, I’m confident I’ll be able to develop courses as an instructional designer.

Before joining NPower, I took a paid online coding class from which I received little value. When my spouse recommended NPower’s free coding program, I thought it was too good to be true. The training program is essentially a supercharged college semester, focused entirely on developing one’s technical and soft skills. In just four weeks, I’ve learned much more than I had during my online course. I have honed my web development skills and also met so many great people. The scope of work allows you to learn new technical skills and acquire knowledge of cross-platform capabilities. The staff also supported me every step of the way. I have no regrets joining this program and I’ll be forever grateful for the opportunity to become a part of this organization.

I joined the Army when I was 17, thinking I didn’t have the discipline to attend college or graduate after four years. The Army was a great place to learn loyalty, self-control and responsibility. Those qualities molded me into who I am today. I was always technologically inclined and loved playing video games. It was a natural choice to turn technology into a career. I had been working in the IT field for several years when I lost my job. Upon re-entering the job market, I found that I had excellent skills and knowledge, but lacked the confidence and certifications to find another suitable position. NPower is on a mission to place 15,000 young adults and veterans into quality jobs or continuing education by 2023. Part of this goal is our newly launched ‘40 by 22’ initiative, which aims to advance more young women of color in tech careers.
