noun _ / _ The process or technique of selecting, editing, and piecing together to form a continuous whole.
PIECING IT ALL TOGETHER_ A montage is often used in photography to describe the assemblage of several photos to create one image. Arriving at graphic design from a photography background, the word seems to appropriately describe my design process. I am a gatherer of inspiration, collaging many a moodboard and intent on finding intriguing combinations. As designers we are constantly combining elements to compliment, reinforce, or juxtapose, yet always to express and communicate. This collection of work I have created throughout graduate school is like a montage in and of itself. It's the sum of years of knowledge gained, mistakes, successes and a sense of accomplishment. Moving forward, I intend to acquire more of the same experiences, refining and building upon the pieces I've collected so far.

CHALLENGE_ Create a type-driven promotional package for a paperline. Use the name or distinct qualities of the paper as the theme. SOLUTION_ Inspired by the name Cyclus, I chose to use sleep cycles as the overarching theme for New Leaf's Cyclus Print. Our sleep patterns have evolved over time and we generally do not achieve quality sleep in the current pace of our culture. Through the use of erratic type spacing, fragmented photography and graphic elements to represent sleep patterns and polysomnographic charts, the goal was to communicate disruption and broken patterns of sleep and the cognitive side effects of lack of sleep. The overall look and feel is intended to portray the restfulness and revitalization sleep provides, juxtaposed with the scattered state of mind that results from not enough. SLEEP CHART

DESCRIPTION
In a 1997 study by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, people who slept less than five hours a night for seven nights felt stressed, angry, sad, and mentally exhausted. Over time, lack of sleep and sleep disorders can contribute to the symptoms of depression. Sleep loss often aggravates depression symptoms and can make it more difficult to fall asleep. On the positive side, treating sleep problems can help depression and its symptoms, and vice versa. W H AT

What remains true today and more than ever before is that, in order to perform to the best of our abilities, we need to find a sleep-wake pattern that works for us in order to maintain a healthy and comfortable lifestyle. As a 100% recycled paper, Cyclus Print embodies the remarkable quality that can be produced through the cycle of renewal.
Human beings, like all of life, function on a sleep-wake cycle, or circadian rhythm (or biological clock). Due to the circumstances of today’s culture and pace, we no longer achieve quality sleep or adhere to our natural sleep cycle. Over decades of human evolution and technological advances, our patterns have changed, leading to many sleep fallacies and misdiagnosed health problems. Sleep is vital to life, yet little has been studied and understood about it.
New Leaf Paper is pleased to present The Lost Art of Sleep, the first volume in The Modern Life Cycle Series, inspired by the Coated Fine Printing Paper, Cyclus Print.

CHALLENGE_ Research a topic from all perspectives and design a book that proposes change and solves a problem through graphic design. SOLUTION_ The bulk of the project was focused on researching the topic in as many ways possible. Each week I designed small projects based on compiled information, including an interconnectivity map, a hosted event to discuss the topic, and a self-portrait. These exercises defined the target audience and allowed me to experiment with visual styles to best communicate the information. The proposed design solutions ranged from lesson plans and activities for children, guerrilla communications aimed at raising awareness, online postcards, and a monthly publication facilitating discussion and providing resources for social networking. CHALLENGE_ Choose a company that is dying, defunct or could use a makeover and elevate the brand into new territories. SOLUTION_ Stetson’s current reliance on the rugged American persona has limited its potential and their products have become convoluted and unoriginal. My goal was to reestablish Stetson’s strong sense of identity for the moder n man and expand the line of products in their repertoire. Capable, confident and in control are qualities I defined as keywords of the new brand. Targeting men on the way up, Stetson doesn’t question how you get there. Stetson walks the line between a white hat, black hat mentality. The end result is a brand with both edge and sophistication. Stetson no longer sells hats; it sells services and a lifestyle for those who can afford it. Photog rapher_NICOLE RACQUEL RYAN Alcolades_BRAND NEW AWARDS 2011 WINNER

PART OF THE MAN
THE
NEW MARK
THE STETSON SPUR. The new logo was inspired by Blackletter type and the edges of cowboy boot spurs. The intention of the design was to create a sturdy mark that appeared both elegant and rough around the edges, communicating the multi-faceted nature of modern Stetson men. While paying homage to the cowboy, the new mark’s sharp and bold features showcase the more refined qualities of the rejuvenated brand.

CHALLENGE_ The goal was to propose a topic of my choice and design the type of book that would best support the content. SOLUTION_ Choosing a topic very close to home—the memory of my grandmother, Julia—I decided to create a carousel book. It was appropriate because of the way the viewer is able to interact with the book. My grandmother lived her entire life on the island of Guam and there was no way to separate the woman from the culture she was part of. Because I only know bits and pieces of her history, the carousel format seemed fitting because each spread becomes a window through which you view the story. The layers that create the depth of the book can be seen as a metaphor for the many intricacies in her story. Book ar tist_NICOLE RACQUEL RYAN

DARK, SAFE, ALONE
CHALLENGE_ Through experimental typography, design a booklet that portrays the mood and experience of a personally significant place. SOLUTION_ I chose to depict the mystery and privacy associated with working in a darkroom. It can be a therapeutic sanctuary, offering you alone time and an escape from the outside world, while also evoking a sense of anticipation and possibility as you develop images. Through relatively abstracted photography and overlapping, transparent type that references the properties of light, the intent was to communicate a feeling of solitude and quiet suspense that a darkroom represents for me. CHALLENGE_ Choose a film director for a mock film festival. Design an integrated system across a variety of different platforms, inspirited by a common thread that runs throughout the films. SOLUTION_ French film director, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, was my chosen director. All of his films have quirky humor, but also can take on a more serious tone. Jeunet’s characters usually are coping with past traumas and have personal obstacles to overcome. Propelled by the presence of whimsy and innocence in many of the characters, the design solution juxtaposes carnival imagery, evoking childhood memories with a darker, more sinister feel that inspires nightmares. The abstract pattern used throughout the design system signifies the confusion and fragmentation of memory. Photog rapher_NICOLE RACQUEL RYAN

CHALLENGE_ Promoting performances by the Australian contemporary dance company Chunky Move, the goal of the project was to create a poster and brochure for the 2010 season which communicates the unique essence of the company. SOLUTION_ The company’s dance philosophy is diverse in form and content, seeking to redefine what is or what can be contemporary dance. Producing a distinct yet unpredictable brand of genre-defying dance, the performances are often site-specific and include new media and installation work. The design was inspired by the heavy use of electronic music and complex stage lighting effects, combined with the expressive shape of the human form. Illustrator_NICOLE RACQUEL RYAN

CHALLENGE_ Design a book narrative around the potential or theoretical future of a chosen topic or subject. SOLUTION_ Using outerspace as the theme, I chose to create a mock space travel guide that would provide information on the various ways one can travel throughout the solar system, the activities available, and the precautions one should take. Using a guidebook vernacular as inspiration, my approach was to combine original photography, composite imagery and graphic illustrations to create a user-friendly yet modern aesthetic. WE ARE BORN TO CREATE_ A graphic design thesis is a daunting undertaking. The sheer scope and time involved is unlike any other project I encountered in graduate school. Testing what I’ve learned throughout my education, it required a good deal of self-discipline and organization. The thesis objective was to find a topic that could benefit from graphic design. A culmination of my time in graduate school, this project was the opportunity to showcase the skills I've learned thus far. My thesis evolved over the course of a year and a half, simultaneously while enrolled in other courses and working an internship. After a lot of deliberation, I chose to focus on the significance of the arts in high schools. Such an extensive project had to be something that I was excited and passionate about—and nothing seemed more fitting. Exposed to different art forms my entire life, it’s hard to define myself without its influence. My research was validated by numerous studies that advocated the arts in education. The biggest challenge then became finding a visual solution to help the cause.

CHALLENGE_ Select a topic where graphic design can make a difference. Perform extensive research, identify the audience and design a set of robust visual solutions that are conceptually and aesthetically sound. SOLUTION_ What distinguishes this project from what's already been done? My approach was to highlight several different means through which the arts can be incorporated into the classroom. The goal was to touch on various ways to ignite collaboration and encourage creativity and self-expression. High school students are more likely to engage in projects they feel are relevant to their lives. With an animated and expressive tone, the overall integrated system was inspired by bold illustrated silkscreen posters and children's coloring books. Everyone needs inspiration and prompts to participate in creative activities. I've provided materials that people can interact with and build upon. Illustrator & Photog rapher_NICOLE RACQUEL RYAN

As a nation…we celebrate the arts for the value they add to learning and to life, [yet the] study of the arts is quietly disappearing from our schools. sandra s. ruppert author of "Critical Evidence: How the Arts Benefit Student Achievement"

TO MY FAMILY_ Mom, Dad and James, without your continuous support and encouragement, I would have never pushed myself to embark on this journey. You believe in me and I am so extremely lucky to have you all in my life. I am deeply grateful for your love everyday and I strive to make you proud. TO ALL MY FRIENDS_ You cheered me on, brainstormed with me, kept me sane, modeled for me and helped me in the final hour. Nick, Kayhan, Ray and Hadley—you put up with my crazy late nights and chaos, made me coffee and reminded me to eat. Living with so many wonderfully talented people has been incredibly inspiring and motivating. TO MY ADVISORS AND PROFESSORS_ Mary Scott, Phil Hamlet, Hunter Wimmer, Carolina de Bartolo, Gaston Yagmourian, Chris Riggs and Shardul Kiri and Ann Jordan at UNIT partners, I truly couldn't have gotten to the finish line without you. To all my teachers—your guidance, advise and words of wisdom throughout my education have been invaluable. Thank you for challenging me and helping me become a better designer. I've learned so much from all of you. TO BARRY_ I quite literally don't know how I would have done this without you. While on this journey, you have helped and supported me in every way possible. You put up with my ill-timed and random requests and helped me stay on track. You have more patience than you realize and I'm so lucky to have you by my side.
