MENAGERIE

’ve always thought we were lucky to be able to celebrate the New Year twice in the Philippines, and with the Year of the Dog coming up right after Valentine’s Day, here’s some of the things I’ve picked up over time about dogs.

I

Born in the Year of the Dog? Then you’re likely to be a salt-ofthe-earth kind of person, someone people like hanging around with. Among your positive traits are honesty, loyalty, and a strong sense of fairness. You just need to be a little less defensive at times.

Depending on who you listen to, dogs were first domesticated by humans between 15,000 to 12,500 years ago, with the former occurring in Europe and the latter in Central Asia or China. Other researchers say this means dogs were domesticated twice.

According to Master Joseph Chau, 2018 is the Year of the Earth Dog, which poses a challenge to those born in the years of the Dog (yes, believe it or not), Dragon, Goat, Ox, and Rooster.

The Kennel Club was founded in 1873 in the United Kingdom; the American Kennel Club followed in 1884. Both introduced breed standards which are still followed today.

Pope Francis once consoled a little boy whose dog had died by telling him that “Paradise is open to all of God’s creatures.”

In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, only nobility were allowed to keep hunting dogs, and this would signal their status as noblemen.

Interestingly, that echoes one of the loveliest things my absolute favorite animal writer ever wrote. James Herriot, a veterinarian, was once asked by a dying woman whose dogs and cats he cared for, whether animals went to heaven too, and he said he believed so. It was a great consolation for the old lady, who died peacefully.

Speaking of dogs, they are mentioned 14 times in the Bible, with the greyhound being the only one named by breed.

You ought to know who Rin Tin Tin is; it’s the name for a long line of superstar dogs on the screen. The original, says Wikipedia, was a rescued German Shepherd named after a good luck charm. He very nearly snatched an Academy Award for Best Actor from human competition, and was so popular, his funeral in 1932 drew many mourners and stopped work across the USA.

While service dogs haven’t been clearly established and professionalized in the Philippines, they can be used to guide the blind, detect seizures before they happen, soothe those suffering from PTSD, and help socialize the autistic.

Did you know that the smaller the dog, the longer it lives? That’s because bigger dogs tend to have more health issues.

Dog paws tend to smell like popcorn due to yeast and bacteria. They also sweat only through their paws, so heat stroke treatment often involves cooling paws down too.

The Queen of England is so closely associated with Pembroke Welsh corgis that people are already wondering if Prince Charles will continue the tradition if he becomes King.

How important was the domestication of dogs to us? Archaeologist and geneticist Greger Larson says, “…we’re not dissimilar to any other wild primate. We’re manipulating our environments, but not on a scale bigger than, say, a herd of African elephants. And then, we go into partnership with this group of wolves. They altered our relationship with the natural world.”

Alas, our interference has also given rise to much suffering. The bulldog, for one, has been weakened and has become prone to so many health problems over decades of being bred for “cuteness” rather than for sturdiness, health, and other qualities that benefit the animal.

Pluto from Walt Disney. Scooby Doo in his own series. Toto from The Wizard of Oz. John Wick’s dog. Blue of Blue’s Clues. Old Yeller. Lassie. Hachiko. Snoopy. It’s hard to imagine pop culture without any of these wonderful dogs!

In 2017, the most popularly registered dog breed at the PCCI was the Shih Tzu. Other top dog breeds were similarly small: the Chihuahua, the Pomeranian, and the Beagle, with only the Siberian Husky breaking into the top 5.

A blue Great Dane named Giant George who lived in Arizona was the world’s biggest dog, “standing 43 inches from paw to shoulders and was able to stand seven-feetthree-inches tall on his hind legs.” He weighed 245 pounds and lived just short of his eighth birthday.

There are so many benefits to having a dog that there are even breeds touted to be hypoallergenic by the American Kennel Club. These include the Bichon Frise, Chinese Crested. Maltese, and poodle.

The World Canine Organization (better known as the FCI) classifies dogs into the following types or groups: Sheepdogs and cattle dogs; Pinscher, Schnauzer, Molossoid and Swiss Mountain dogs; Terriers; Dachshunds; Spitz and primitive types; Scenthounds and related breeds; Pointers and setters; Retrievers, flushing dogs and water dogs; Companion and toy dogs; and Sighthounds.

FUR THE WIN

WHEN LOVE WINS

I PROMISE, THIS IS CAT-RELATED

When John and Gian decided to become purrents, they were in for not one, but two surprises. They adopted Tumi, who was once named Cammy because his rescuers thought he was a she. A few months later, they found out that Mimi, the other cat they adopted whom they thought was female, also turned out to be a he!

8

Animal Scene

Text and photos by STEF DELA CRUZ, MD agic: that’s how a lot of us will explain what happens when we find someone we love and they happen to love us back. Strange how we hate the flaws of the world but learn to fully accept those of the people who hold a special place in our hearts.

M

Once in a while, we see magic unlike any other. We caught glimpses of it when the US Supreme Court decided to lift the ban on same-sex marriage. We saw it again when octogenarians George Harris and Jack Evans, who had been together for 50 years, finally got to tie the knot in their own home state.

FUR THE WIN

Last year, I got to witness it with my own two eyes when I met a guy who found love free of gender stereotypes not once, not twice, but three times! Gian Francis Ruiz, a marketing manager for a beauty brand, was that guy. He first found magic in his life when he met his partner, an academic director named John. He found it again when he adopted Mimi van Tranh, a kitten whose name was inspired by a female character in the famous musical Miss Saigon. Then, he found it a third time when he adopted a kitten named Cammy.

As doting cat parents, Gian and John made a couple of paintings of them which they now display in their home.

Mimi van Tranh, whom everyone thought was female, turned out not to be. Cammy, named after a female Street Fighter, turned out to be male, too!

LOVE STORY Relationships are hard. Add the indignant (and unsolicited) judgment of the world, and it becomes even harder. With politicians quoting the bible against people who want nothing more than to express their love the way everyone else does, it’s easy to imagine why. To Gian, however, allowing love to thrive came naturally. “[When] I met John in an event, it was love at first sight, I guess,” Gian shares. “We started hanging out and sooner than we thought, I asked him if he could live with me.” John, of course, said yes. Gian thought it was a pleasant surprise, but a surprise nonetheless. After all, they seemed to be opposites. “John worked as an English teacher [at the time] and I worked in marketing for a beauty company. He read a lot while I talked a lot!” On their second year together in their little slice of heaven, they adopted a kitten. She was a healthy female kitten. Or so they thought.

LOVE KNOWS NO GENDER (OR SPECIES) When Mimi (brown classic tabby) was sick with diarrhea, Tumi (gray mackerel tabby harlequin) cuddled with him. At this time, their purrents had just found out that Mimi was male.

10

Animal Scene

When Gian resigned from his job a year ago, little did he know that he would become a full-time cat parent. “Mimi Van Tran was given to me by my former office mate who had five kittens at the time. I remember asking for Mimi, who looked the most different from the others.” Mimi was like his colleague’s parting gift to him, but the kitten played a bigger role in his life. “Having [Mimi] lightened my mood while I was looking for another job exactly a year ago.” Mimi kept him company while he looked for employment and did some freelance work as a makeup artist on the side. FUR THE WIN Priyanka (ginger white) and Ferdie (not in photo) now share Tumi and Mimi’s foreverhome.

FAMILY With felines Priya and Ferdie joining their happy family, Gian and John now have four cats under their roof. All of them are lucky to be with such loving furdads who know the value of neutering and adoption. “[We] have to juggle a lot of responsibilities, especially when we are both working. With busy schedules, we really need to work together. There’s a common language of trust and respect, which I think is the very core of being able to stand by each other every day.” To this pair, their cats are important members of the family. “We treat them like babies when we get home and we make sure that they are well-fed, wellgroomed, health-checked and entertained everyday. The cats do not seem to return the favor at all though, but I guess that’s just how they really are!”

GOOD PARTNERS, GREAT PURRENTS Gian was one of the many people who contacted me after the photo of a kitten that my boyfriend and I rescued went viral. When I screened him and the many others who wanted to adopt the kitten, I knew he and his partner would make great purrents. “Would you be able to guide us on how adoption works? And how much would it cost us?” Gian asked. I explained that the cost would be his commitment, time, and answers to intrusive questions on his lifestyle. Other than that, the adoption wouldn’t cost him a dime. Others balked at the idea of describing personal details, such as their jobs, houses, and family members. He didn’t. He said the adoption was a decision that they made as a couple. “At first, we were thinking if we could do it, and then we started researching about cats.” 12

Animal Scene

FATE a female kitten named Chun-Li. My boyfriend and I found her, together with her sibling and mom, locked in a storeroom without light, food, or water. Apparently, she and her family had been trapped in that room for a week or two. (Their story was shared in a previous Animal Scene issue last year.) Chun-Li, however, had already been adopted. I asked if Gian would be open to adopting a male kitten instead, whom we had named Cammy because we once thought he was a female kitten.

Love knows no bounds… or genders or species. It is its own reason for being and its own reward. For Gian, love came in threes, manifesting itself in a magical coincidence that we often only found in fiction. Some would say that when it happened the way it did with Gian, it was luck. I would say it was fate.

Weeks after their rescue, we realized Cammy was a boy! We decided not to change his name—if he was happy with it, then so were we. Gian and John were more than happy to have Cammy, whom they eventually renamed Tumi. Shortly after his adoption, they discovered that their original kitten, Mimi van Tranh, was also a boy.

Eventually, these lead to obstruction ruminal acidosis then lactic acidosis in the animal’s bloodstream, if the animal is lactating as what happened to this patient. The sheep drastically reduced milk output. There also was distention of the abdomen. Oftentimes the animal is unable to rise up either due to extreme pain or production of amines such as histidine and or histamine. There is more inflammatory reaction than meets the eye and the goat’s blood vessels dilate, leading to shock. In the ensuing death of this patient, which was sudden and unnoticed as

This is what we call inter-species adoption for the survival of the young. This phenomena is well documented, for which there is no definitive explanation. It wasn’t easy. The scenario was intriguing in that the number of seeds didn’t appeal to me as the real cause. I probed more on possible “addiction to sweets by sheep” or an article by reputable sources that had a large set of peer-reviewed materials. “Scientists have demonstrated that sugar can be an addictive substance, wielding its power over the brains of lab animals in a manner similar to many drugs of abuse. Researchers found profound behavioral changes in rats that, through experimental conditions, have been trained to become dependent on high doses of sugar. Lab animals that were denied sugar for a prolonged period after learning to binge worked harder to get it when it was reintroduced to them. They consumed more sugar than they ever had before, suggesting craving and relapse behavior.” This from Princeton University, December 11, 2008; (https://www.sciencedaily.com/ releases/2008/12/081210090819.htm) Later, in a press release, they assert that “our evidence from an animal model suggests that bingeing on sugar can act in the brain in ways very similar to drugs of abuse,” said lead researcher and Princeton psychology professor Bart Hoebel.”Princeton Volume 17, Number 12 • February 2017

On a more sober personal note, I will try to reconcile the addiction with animal behavior in that there is a fundamental difference between rat models of animal addiction compared to a herbivore (plant-eater) like a goat. As I was tasked to give advice on how to solve the mortalities, I suggested two things. The first is to put a fence around each mango tree to disallow the sheep from bingeing on the fruits. The second was to move the pasture or grazing areas to a different place.

There is not much evidence to pinpoint addiction as a primary cause. But let me graphically demonstrate the aspect of environmental influence. When I say this, I literally mean surroundings. Way back in 1999, a black and tan dachshund was always brought to that clinic having nervous staggers and frequent falling-over. Having observed this, I suspected the poor dog was intoxicated with something alcoholic in nature. I immediately did a physical examination. I smelled the unmistakable scent of alcohol in its breath. I directed my history-taking to the human companion. As I probed for more

information, I learned that the dog was allowed too frequently in the company of its human owner, who was in the habit of drinking beer. I was skeptical and asked, “Is it possible that your boss allows or even encourages this dog, still a puppy at the time of about four to six months old, to drink beer?” The reply was in the affirmative. From then on I warned the house help to inform the owner of the dangers as well as consequences of chronic intake as well as inebriation to alcohol by a dog. That unfortunately did not deter the owner from giving his dog a drink once again. I had to admonish the owner with a chilling letter telling him of the applicable provisions of R.A. 8485.

ENDANGERED! DID YOU KNOW?

Animal Scene’s Paul Catiang will be tackling the issue of trap-neuter-release (TNR) programs, which have come to the forefront as an area of debate among animal lovers, particularly in commercial areas. As a complex issue, the neutering of stray cats in a neighborhood goes beyond those of us who have a soft spot for our furry friends. Our good intentions may lead us to them, much to the annoyance of other people in our area. Let’s explore this issue to learn more about what we can do to help.

TRAP-NEUTER -RELEASE Basic facts on the responsible neutering and feeding of stray cats Text by PAUL CATIANG

nna Cabrera of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has received reports of stray cats entering commercial areas, private homes, hospitals, classrooms, and other places where they are less than welcome. It also turned out that these cats were neutered by some well-meaning individuals, and that their intervention actually exposed the cats—and humans—to greater risks.

A

So what exactly is TNR?

IT’S A COMMUNITY EFFORT

Translated and adapted from http://www.paws.org.ph/tnr-andresponsible-feeding-of-stray-cats1.html with permission

40 Animal Scene

An effective trap-neuter-release program needs to involve an entire community and goes beyond the individuals who enforce it. Everyone needs to know the rules. What are the rules?

Volume 17, Number 12 • February 2017

ENDANGERED! DID YOU KNOW?

ACCOUNT FOR THE COMMUNITY’S HOLDING CAPACITY A holding capacity is an area’s available food and water supply that stray animals consume—this includes stray dogs, cats, birds, and even rats. Every neighborhood supports its share of such animals, whether the humans give the food willingly during scheduled feedings or the animals scavenge the area’s garbage. The holding capacity also includes prey animals and insects for the predator species in the same area. Commercial areas, which have more contained garbage disposal and sanitized areas, have small holding capacities when compared to residential neighborhoods. However, it is important to note that effective garbage disposal in a village, for example, will not always effectively reduce the number of strays. Nearby areas may have less effective disposal systems and their resident strays often explore the surrounding places. With this in mind, a neighborhood that wants to implement a TNR program may need to take note of the

garbage disposal and collection schedules in their area and see how this can affect the holding capacity of their resident strays. After this initial step, a community can then enter an agreement with an animal welfare organization, like PAWS, to set the TNR program in motion. The agreements involve the following: Humane trapping — The strays will be trapped without pain or trauma. PAWS has traps that can be borrowed. People can also feed the cats in large cages so they can get used to being inside cages. Humane feeding — The community has to agree to a feeding schedule to give their leftovers to their stray cats. They also need to agree to specific feeding areas within the neighborhood. Non-taming — It is also in the cats’ best interests to stay feral and aloof from humans. This keeps them wary of strangers intent on harming them.

OTHER BENEFITS OF TNR Neutered cats mean their population doesn’t increase. In turn, this means they do not exceed the neighborhood’s holding capacity—breeding would mean they would need to share the food supply with their offspring, which would eventually deplete the resources. With the stray cats assured of a regular food supply in one area, they would see little need to forage for food in other places. Their instincts would also help them keep intruding strays out, as they would want to protect their territory.

42

Animal Scene

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT TNR AND FEEDING STRAYS Many well-meaning people believe they can trap, neuter, and release stray cats on their own. Others believe they can do some good by feeding these cats on the street. However, both approaches do the cats more harm than good. Feeding stray cats without neutering will increase their population, resulting in more and more cats to feed. It may also make them tamer and therefore more likely to wander into populated areas or homes where they would be viewed more as pests than pets. PAWS recommends the responsible feeding of strays—that is, only neutered cats. Individuals who do TNR privately without informing or engaging their entire community may have their well-meant efforts misunderstood. It’s likely that the city pound will still capture and kill their neutered cats. Without a fixed time and place for feeding, the neutered cats would still feed from whatever source is available: garbage bins, other kindly souls, prey animals. Surplus food supply may attract other cats into the neighborhood. As stated above, TNR is a community effort; everyone in a given area needs to agree on implementing the program and take an active hand in informing people in the neighborhood of it.

Actually, Raiza, a petite and bubbly blogger, mans the yard sale and is one of the popular members of the blogger group. “Later, Spike and me will go to the Pet Show,” she says as she poses with her starstruck followers. The millennial crowd enthusiastically rummages through the assorted cosmetics, makeup kits, and other beauty products displayed on a small table. Spike, whose fierce look is enough to frighten Raiza’s fans, is unmindful of the frenzy and giggly laughter of the youthful crowd. He lies down and sleeps. Spike is full of devotion and gentleness; much of it overflows in the multifold wrinkles of his skin. He is sporting a doggie costume for the pet show. It’s a dark brown sweater with a hood—with a smiling bulldog’s face, naturally. “I bought it in Korea,” Raiza says as her fans line up for a hug and photo op with her. To say she is a minor celebrity is an understatement.

This writer feels lucky that the popular blogger still found time to answer questions despite the busyness of the moment. She even apologized for the continuous interruptions due to her fans’ requests for selfies, groufies, and pleasantries. “Spike is three years old. He is very gentle. I bought him from a friend. The puppies can range from 32-45 K,” says the 26 year-old commerce graduate, internal auditing major at Far Eastern University. Raiza is into beauty tutorials, product reviews, and beauty basics. This writer wonders if she can give Spike an instant noselift makeup. According to dogtime.com, the bulldogs’ short noses make them prone to a number of respiratory ailments. Because of the size of their heads and fronts, bulldogs have difficulty giving birth. Most require Caesarians to deliver their puppies. It isn’t advised for inexperienced breeders to try to breed them. Raiza’s English Bulldog, Spike, has an interesting historical background. His breed was used to drive cattle to market and to compete in a bloody sport called bullbaiting. Bullbaiting was a popular spectator sport in a time when there were no professional sports, TV shows, movies, or video games. The angry bull would toss the dog up in the air with its horns if it could, much to the delight of the watching crowd. (The Society of Prevention for the Prevention of Cruelty to animals will surely protest if it happens at this age and time.) The dog, on the other hand would attempt to latch onto the bull, usually at its snout, and pin it to the ground through the force of its painful bite. Upcoming bullbaitings were advertised and crowds wagered on the outcome of the struggle. As this writer reminded her that 2018

is the Year of the Dog, Raiza shared, “I grew up with dogs—eight dogs actually. I hope that in this Year of the Dog, it will be a lucky year for me careerwise, and (for) Spike. I wish him good health.” She ends the short interview with a loud laugh, “Spike snores and farts. When I

say ‘shower’ he sleeps!” The fierce forefathers of Spike have evolved into the sweet, amiable, and affectionate English Bulldog, an excellent companion for Raiza, the beauty blogger and dog lover.

THE LHASA APSO:

THE DIVINE GUARD DOG AS A FURRY FAMILY MEMBER Text by RICHARD RAMOS From temple guardian to loving pet, the Lhasa Apso is a loving and loyal addition to your family. Many people see the Lhasa Apso as a cute, playful non-sporting dog that would be at home on their laps, or jumping around them. However, that can’t be further from the truth, as Lhasa Apso dogs aren’t just “toy dogs.” HISTORY: BARK LION SENTINEL DOG Lhasa Apso dogs, for all their appearance as beautiful show dogs, have a long and proud history of actually being a type of working dog. It is this strange history that makes them excel in many activities or physical contests, something that many people usually do not expect of small, longhaired dogs. They come from Tibet, and they are named for the holy city of Lhasa. Originally, they were owned and bred by nobles and monks as noisy guards and fierce protectors of palace grounds and monasteries. One of their original names, “Abso Seng Kye,” means “Bark Lion Sentinel Dog,” and it gives a very good idea of how well - and noisily - they guarded their masters’ territories. They were also used in some religious ceremonies. Lhasa Apsos were generally held in high regard because of all this. Lhasa Apso dogs were, in the beginning, difficult to come by, as they were not sold, but given as gifts. Luckily, for all of us who have Lhasa Apso family members, they were usually given in pairs, such that some of the Lhasa Apsos who were gifted to outsiders became the foundation of breeding kennels outside of Tibet. 46

COVER STORY Belinda Chang Laddaran and her Lhasa Apso brood at her wedding

This year is the Chinese Year of the Dog—and one dog breeder is determined to make her Lhasa Apso its glamorous poster child

his month, the Chinese New Year ushers in the Year of the Dog—according to predictions, a happy and fulfilling year, if a bit frustrating and exhausting in parts.

T

Sounds like an auspicious year for Lhasa Apso breeder Belinda Chang Laddaran. The proud owner of Pooch Glamour, a kennel with, currently, 20 Lhasa Apsos (and a rabbit and a hamster along for the ride) based in Capas, Tarlac, Belinda sat down with us during a photo shoot of three of her dogs— Matilda, Swagger, and her champion show dog Jonas—a gorgeous young stud muffin with a long and gloriously magnificent white coat who patiently endured the hour-long shoot with the air of the born professional. Just last September 2017, Jonas, also known as Multi Ch Kutani Snowfall in the international dog show circuit, won Best in Show at the 154th FCI All Breed Championship Dog Show in Manila, judged by Oleg Yanchev, a pillar of the Russian Kynological Federation (RKF). And 2017 also saw the soft debut of Jonas’s offspring, Pooch Glamour Baby Matilda, into the local dog show circuit, with Matilda winning 3x Best Baby Puppy In Show at the Metro Clark Pampanga Canine Club Dog Shows a month after Jonas’ triumph.

48

Animal Scene

Belinda started breeding Lhasa Apsos in 2004. “It was an accidental mating between my two Lhasa Apsos, Ruffles and Troy,” she says. Ruffles and Troy were the two Lhasa Apsos she adopted in 2003, to help her cope with the death of her beloved father. That same year, upon graduation from college, she was trying to figure out what to do with her life—and Ruffles and Troy steered her towards her current path as well. “[After graduating], (when) I was looking for a job, I would always tell myself I would have less time for the dogs if I had a full-time job,” Belinda says. “So I made dog biscuits first, then dog ribbons, then dog clothes.” And thus Pooch Glamour was born.

COVER STORY

As the years went by, Belinda decided to take her show on the road full time, making friends in the dog circuit and cultivating contacts with other Lhasa Apso breeders around the world. She made her dog show debut at the January 2014 Philippine Circuit Show in the Megatrade Hall at SM Megamall, with Bruce (Hall of Fame, Int’l Ch Blanziflor Jp Bruce Wayne) and (PH Ch Kutani Carbon Copy) Luther—two Lhasa Apsos she acquired from international breeders Blanziflor (from Japan) and Kutani (from the UK). As a newbie, Belinda was a bit floored at how deadly serious the whole event could get. As she writes in the Pooch Glamour blog: “For four days from January 2326, 2014, Megamall became a dog town. Within hours the trade hall was transformed into a dogville […] a warren of crates, table, chairs, and an exponential number of hair sprays, chalks, combs and brushes I have ever seen in my life. And then there were those exhibitors who groomed their dogs very very early and continuously trimmed and toiled throughout the rest of the

day for four days and all they did was trim and groom their dogs to perfection. You wondered how such outlandish and time-intensive hairstyles made them still sleep at night.” (link: “Bruce Wayne: Life of a Show Dog” [http://poochglamour. com/wp/?p=63]) In 2016, Belinda was in the UK to attend Crufts, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious dog shows, and to pay a visit to her friend, Luther’s breeder Wendy Cain, owner of Kutani Lhasa Apso. When Belinda saw Jonas (Kutani Snowball) at Crufts, it was “love at first sight.” Jonas was already a seasoned dog show veteran at that point—before finding a forever home with Pooch Glamour, Jonas had stayed for a few months with Olga Ivanova of Avgit kennel in Russia, winning the

championship titles in Russia and Belarus before returning to Kutani to sweep awards in the UK as well. Once Jonas gained his UK Champion title, Belinda was able to take him home with her to the Philippines, where he proceeded to win awards as well—winning the abovementioned Best in Show at the FCI All Breed Championship, and earning a place in the Philippine Hall of Fame. Somehow, during all this, Belinda also found the time to get married and have two sons, now aged five and one. The Laddarans had a puppy pile of their beloved Lhasa Apsos serve as their wedding entourage in 2012, and Pooch Glamour’s Instagram account is full of adoring pictures of their brood, furry and otherwise. Belinda, as a full-time mom, has a daily routine all set up. Ate Josie, Belinda’s assistant, is the dogs’ yaya who gives them their once-a-week bath and blow-dry sessions and, given the careful fussing during the photo shoot, takes a very maternal pride in her work. They both also handle daily grooming sessions, as Lhasa Apsos can be quite high-maintenance. The Lhasa Apsos of Pooch Glamour live cage-free, which can make daily maintenance a bit difficult perhaps, but guarantee that the dogs are able to exercise, roam freely, and play. The males are separated from the females, of course. Jonas, however, stays separately with Belinda’s older son Milo, to prevent him getting scuffed and injured from rough play with the other dogs, and his play time is monitored. Show day time is always hectic; Belinda now knows that what she saw in SM Megamall in 2014 is

pretty much par for the course. For Show Day, they have to wake up early, and start with a bath and blow-dry session. Then afterwards, grooming is pretty much continuous—combing, brushing, checking for tangles, an occasional hair trim if needed, checking the claws and trimming them if they’re too long. Fortunately Jonas is always up to the challenge, and excited to go. “When you ask him, ‘do you want to go to the dog show?’ he wags his tail profusely,” she says. It’s not surprising, given (again) how professional he’s been throughout the photo shoot. That’s a born show dog, right there. While 2017 was a very good year for Pooch Glamour, Belinda is looking forward even more to 2018, because this is also the year that her home-bred Pooch Glamour puppies, Matilda and Clarabelle (born only a few months ago), will break into the local and international dog show circuit! And Belinda is certain that they will be a smash hit. Just like their proud papa, Jonas.

guard-dog traits with his new role as a companion and family member. • Doing their own thing: It is also important to remember - and it should come as no surprise - that Lhasa Apso dogs do not necessarily like to please their owners. They are loyal, yes, but they have no problems trying to manipulate you so they are the “masters.â€? Because of this, even with early training, it is still a fact that Lhasa Apsos will not be the most obedient. But while that sounds like a downer, do remember that they are a very intelligent breed, and they can be very playful. Really, once you key in to their need to be respected for what they are, and you give them enough time and space to be themselves, then you will have a wonderful time with your Lhasa Apso. 4 appreciate with the Lhasa Apso is that they are very content to live indoors, and that all they need are short walks and a few play sessions a week. They don’t have much nervous energy to reduce. You will also love their need to stay close to family members, and more often than not, they will follow family members around the house, and they will want to be part of group activities, even if it means they’re just sitting on someone’s lap. However, when the Lhasa Apso is left alone, it’s not much of a problem either, as they do not suffer from separation anxiety like many other breeds. Still, you had better not stay away too long! Just remember, while you are the Big Human for them, they are still the Big Dog for you, no matter their real size.

all pythons—known to scientists as Python regius—are the most commonly kept snakes, and are pretty popular as pets in general. Could it be the beady little eyes, or the perfunctory sniffs they seem to take of everything? Could it be the way they curl up in the crook of their owners’ arms? Who knew snakes could be so sweet?!

B

Okay, well, that could be a misconception. But there's no denying that this train of thought is all over the internet. Either way, we're still running along on this reptile road as we look at the Banana Pewter Bee Ball Python. (Try saying that ten times fast.)

THEIR MOMMA The name is just one of the cutest things about it—at least to snake lovers—and like most other morphs, simply denotes the color and pattern of the python. In this case, “banana” is for the dominant yellow hue it sports; “pewter” for the grayish-browns of its pattern, taken from a parent of the Cinnamon variety as a co-dominant. The latter might make this particular morph more desirable, in fact, because getting the almost elegant look of the Cinnamon is pretty unusual.

60

Animal Scene

Nothing significant differs among morphs in terms of behavior, so you're pretty much only searching for ones you like the look of. Among python lovers, though, there are certain patterns that just don't occur in the wild, requiring very purposeful breeding, some trial and error, and a bit of patience, making these visual traits all the more desirable.

THE PARENT TRAP (ALTERNATIVELY: THIRD TIME’S THE CHARM)

The primary concern, of course, is healthy eggs and baby snakes. A year-and-a-half old male ball python should just start to show that it is sexually active, while a female should be about two and a half years old, if not three. A healthy female should have some heft—about 1.5 kilograms. Still, it takes time, because simply shoving them in a tank together doesn’t guarantee eggs, let alone healthy ones. It’s expected that their first mating season won’t be successful. So for all that, it’s still almost a kind of game, this ball python

morph breeding, and largely one of chance—more accurately, probability. Healthy eggs often don’t come until around a snake’s third mating season. But it is the fact that it has become something of a game means that there are plenty of those who play it. Plain English: people love snakes now as they might love a dog or a cat, which is a relatively huge leap from where we were not too long ago.

BABY, IT'SSSS COLD OUTSSSSIDE

If the words “banana pewter bee” don’t already give you a case of Cute-Aggression, you might be drawn to the deceptively sweet face of the ball python. And some may mistake their habit of ‘snuggling’ into warm parts of the human body as affection. Larry Tan sets us straight on this: yes, it’s adorable—unfortunately, it may be more out of necessity than affection, but we’ll never really know. We’ll go with affection, anyway.

might experience with a furrier companion. But cold blood doesn’t a cold heart make—“It’s just a different bond,” says Dr. Lorelei Tibbetts, LVT, VTF. Reptiles in general haven’t had the centuries of experience of human cohabitants that, say, dogs have, so they’ve kept their baser instincts, as well as their own means of demonstrating emotional attachment. For aspiring snakeowners, it’s really just a matter of becoming familiar with their language, as it were.

We say that, at least, not in the same sense as one

SCALE-LIEN VS. PREDATOR “Their feeding response [could sometimes] be perceived as hostile or aggressive,” explains our expert, “which is just a reaction when you open their tubs or tanks and they think food is being served. There are also the easily scared baby snakes, [who] respond by striking as a defense. Normally, they outgrow this.” But just like people or other animals, personalities differ, so it's up to the owner to learn their own reptile and its attitude. On the subject of other animals, ball pythons and corn snakes might have more to fear from your cats than the other way around. “They're inquisitive... and playful. I believe the cat would come out on top,” Larry warns us. “[But] it's really not that uncommon to have other pets. It's a matter of compatibility.” Animal Scene

REPTILE SPOTLIGHT

INTERVIEW WITH THE KEEPER Animal Scene sat down with Larry Tan, our friendly python expert, and he answered quite a few important questions for us.

Q 1: There’s been a lot of internet love for snakes lately, particularly ball pythons. What do you think of this change in attitude towards snakes? :

I think exotic reptiles are getting more exposure through public and private events and social media which would probably [contribute] to the rise in interest. We now have many beautiful morphs and combination that would certainly appeal to many. Once newbies get a chance to personally hold one, they are amazed to be holding a ball python. This encounter could lead to more research, which could lead to joining any of many ball python hobbyist groups, leading to more awareness and interest. Because of the internet, [sellers have become accessible], and with prices becoming more affordable, getting your first ball python has become less challenging.

Q 2: Some people think snakes have sweet faces. Are ball pythons particularly affectionate? : [laughs] To some, they are. Having a sweet face is relative. I know people who are very attached to their pet ball python [so it’s understandable] they feel this way. They crawl and they coil, they may seem to snuggle in a warm tight part of your body... but that’s how they are. They are not pets which you can expect to [deliberately show] affection, so for them you’re simply a warm body they can hide in.

62

Animal Scene

Q 3: What can a novice look for to be able to distinguish ball pythons from one another? : If you are asking how to differentiate morphs, then there is no other way but to personally learn more about them. There is a lot of information about the different morphs on the net. Ask experts, study the different morphs. There are those that are easy to distinguish, but for the harder ones, it takes a while to discern the different subtleties. So like most things, the more time you put into it the [better you get] at it.

Q 4: The banana pewter bee pattern has a certain range to it. How do these patterns occur? : All ball pythons originate or are descended from Africa. New patterns and colors that are different from the wild form are random occurrences—a mutation. This mutation could later prove out to be inheritable traits or it could not.

Q 5: Have you observed a difference in temperament between morphs? : This is highly subjective and only from my own collection of ball python, [but] I did notice that some types of morphs are more defensive and tend to strike more but overall they do calm down as they mature.

Q 6: Is the banana pewter bee particularly popular/ unpopular as a pet? : I think the banana gene is currently still popular and having this gene as part of this combination still makes it popular.

Q 7: How does one properly care for a ball python? : [Depends on the python, but generally], your enclosure should be appropriate to current size of the ball python. Cleanliness is always important. Fresh water at all times. Regular feeding with appropriate size prey/food. They are relatively easy to keep, requiring only periodic feeding and cleaning. So for busy individuals who are looking for something different, [this is a] pet that could be considered.

Volume 17, Number 12 • February 2017

REPTILE SPOTLIGHT

As for scared baby ball pythons, normally they outgrow striking and in the meantime, just be patient with them; they come around.

Q 10: Is it safe to assume that you shouldn’t keep a ball python if you’ve already got, say, a cat? :

Not really, it’s really not that uncommon for pet lovers to have many different types of pets. It’s just a matter of knowing compatibility... between or among different types of animals, to avoid one animal endangering the other.

Q 8: Are there any instances where a ball python can get unusually hostile? : Their feeding response [could sometimes] be perceived as hostile or aggressive, which is just a reaction when you open their tubs and they think food is being served. There are also the easily scared baby snakes, and because they’re nervous, they respond by striking as a defense.

Q 9:

How can this be avoided?

: After a period of caring for your ball python, normally you’ll get a feel [for] the personality of your ball python. For the feed-aggressive, open your tub slowly and keep your face or hand away from the striking direction and range of your snake. Once they realize it’s not feeding time, they usually calm down. [If for any reason] you need to pick them up, get behind to pick them up—never towards the their face.

Some owners say cats get along with their corn snakes but ball pythons are considerably bigger. I’m not familiar with this, so I’m not sure if you’re concerned about the cat or the ball python. Well, I believe the cat would come out on top in a fight against either [of them]. I think also think the corn snake is simply indifferent to the cat, and I would think the ball python would be the same; the cat would be too big for the ball python to consider as prey. It’s the cat you should watch out for. They’re inquisitive... and playful, [so they] could bully these snakes.

Q 11: What are your tips for anyone who might be considering getting a banana pewter bee? :

Before thinking of getting a banana pewter bee, or any ball python, it’s really important to learn as much as you can about the ball python morphs. This way you really know this is a combination you really like.

his year, Chinese New Year begins on February 16 and falls under the Chinese zodiac sign of the Dog. So I would like to share my canine experiences and wish list.

T

Dogs are said to be honest, amiable, loyal, prudent, cautious, and kind. Because of this, they make great companions who are sure to be loyal to their owners and to care for them with all their heart. There are different group categories for dogs and the most common are:

•GROUP 1 •GROUP 2 •GROUP 3 •GROUP 4 •GROUP 5 •GROUP 6 •GROUP 7

To better appreciate them, I classified them into subgroups:

MY PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE JOURNEY

R A E Y E H O D T F THE G O s by MANUEL YAP nd photo Text a a Gr phics by AZ TEAM

Elderly-friendly: These dogs are best suited for seniors as they require less supervision and produce only a little stray fur. They also are perfect pet and lap dogs as they can provide silent comfort and companionship to their owners

without disturbing them. German Shepherds and Labradors are perfect examples of this.

Now comes the best part: my wish list for the Chinese New Year, which I hope is the same as yours.

Hypoallergenic: These are basically dogs that produce relatively less dander, which normally causes allergic reactions. These dogs are recommended for those with allergies or who wish to have lower maintenance dogs, as they require little grooming and whose fur doesn’t fall out much. In the Philippines, popular “hypo” dogs are the Bichon Frise, Maltese, and Poodle.

Child-friendly: These are dogs that are most suitable for children in aspects such as size and temperament, since not all dogs have personalities and characteristics that do well with kids. Some examples of child-friendly dogs are the Corgi and Boxer.

SHIH TZU

BOXER

Care Level: MODERATE

Care Level: EASY

DESCRIPTION Also known as the ‘Little Lion’, it is one of the 14 oldest dog breeds. It is a lover, not a hunter. It is an affectionate, happy, outgoing house dog which loves nothing more than to follow the people they consider theirs from room to room.

My tricolor Shih Tzu was named Teddy.

DESCRIPTION Originally bred as medium sized guard dogs, now, they are usually found as loving family companions. These dogs are full of energy and need regular exercise. They also tend to drool and snore loudly when asleep,

GROOMING Since their coat fur is relatively long, Shih Tzus are considered high maintenance in terms of grooming, as they should be groomed once a week.

GERMAN SHEPHERD

Care Level: MODERATE

Care Level: SLIGHTLY DIFFICULT

DESCRIPTION The Mini Pinscher Doberman has a reputation for being sinister and sharp (sometimes they bark at almost anything). Some owners “debark them for this reason—something with which I greatly disagree. Mini Pinschers are said to be the most

loyal and loving of dog companions. This type of dog is very stable and friendly to its owners.

GROOMING This dog requires very minimal grooming as it has short fur, although they still need an occasional brushing for maintenance purposes.

With its sleek coat, athletic build, and characteristic cropped ears and docked tail, it looks like an aristocrat. It is a highly energetic and intelligent dog, suited for police and military work, canine

sports, and as a family guardian and companion. Unfortunately, I never encountered Dobermans in the Philippines that were used for police work or as protection dogs.

HONG KONG’S BIRD PARADISE Text and photos by YVETTE TAN id you know that there’s an aviary in Hong Kong? The Edward Youde Aviary was opened in 1992 and is named after the Governor General of Hong Kong from 1982 to 1986.

The Aviary is located in the southern portion of Hong Kong Park, built along a natural valley on the slope of Victoria Peak. It is composed of raised pathways underneath a 3,000 meter steel mesh canopy where guests can walk through and view birds and surrounding trees that include fig, kapok, and candlenut trees.

Ponds and foliage below complete the environment, which mimics a Malesian rainforest where the birds come from. According to the Aviary pamphlet, Malesia is ‘a botanical region covering a vast area extending from the Malaya Peninsula and Great Sundas (Sumatra, Borneo and Java), the Philippines, the Indonesian islands to New Guinea and the Bismarck Archipelago.’ The Aviary contains around 600 birds from 70 species, including endangered species like Bali Mynas. It’s wonderful to know that should you get tired of Hong Kong’s city life, there’s a quiet place you can retreat to in the middle of the city where you can surround yourself with the beauty of nature.

Extinct Animals of the Philippines Text by GREGG YAN

W

hen you think of Philippine wildlife, which animals come to mind? Crocs, tamaraw, the

Philippine eagle?

Well, would you believe that elephants, rhinoceroses, and giant tortoises once lived in our country? The roar of wild tigers even reverberated over the mountains of Palawan!

Mighty stegodon (Stegodon luzonensis)—extinct cousins of modern-day elephants—once roamed the plains of the Cagayan Valley in Northern Luzon. They died out just 4,000 years ago, when the Pharaohs ruled Egypt. (Photo credit: National Museum)

THE WILD SIDE WITH GREGG YAN

Billions-strong flocks of passenger pigeons (Ectopistes migratorius) once turned North American skies black. But commercial hunting for meat completely wiped out the species by 1914. (Photo credit: Bagheera)

Paleontologist Sylvio Lopez excavated the molar of a stegodon, an extinct relative of modern-day elephants, between Cagayan and Kalinga Apayao in 1973. In 2008, the University of the Philippines Archaeological Studies Program announced the discovery of tiger bones in Palawan’s El Nido! As humans rose to dominate life on Earth, many species fell by the wayside. Gone are the wild elephants, rhinoceroses, and tigers of the Philippines. Extinction is a natural phenomenon, the result of failing to evolve fast enough to keep up with the times, a cataclysm like an asteroid crash, or human intervention. Most plant and animal species last around 10 million years before disappearing. Some lucky ones last much longer. Coelacanths—

ancient 6-foot long fish rediscovered in South Africa in 1938 and in Indonesia in 1997—have been in existence for over 360 million years! What’s worrying is the unnatural rate of extinction. Over 200 species are now disappearing daily. By the time you finish reading this column, another will vanish. The story of the passenger pigeon, once among Earth’s most common birds, is ominous. A single flock flying above Southern Ontario in 1866 was 1.5 kilometers wide and 500 kilometers long. It would have filled the sky from Manila to Ilocos Norte with birds! In 1914, just 48 years later, Martha, the world’s last passenger pigeon, was laid to rest. Due to excessive commercial hunting, one of the planet’s most common birds was declared extinct.

The plains bison (Bison bison) once numbered about 60 million heads. Today, only about 20,000 remain in the wild, the species having been saved by government and commercial intervention. Shown is an adult bull at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. (Photo credit: Gregg Yan)

THE WILD SIDE WITH GREGG YAN

The tamaraw (Bubalus mindorensis) has a similar tale to that of the bison. Once numbering about 10,000, the population dropped to less than 100 by 1969. Today, the population has recovered to 401, proving that conservation can buy endangered species time. The real solution is to create a system where humans don’t plunder the planet’s resources to thrive. Shown is an adult bull in Mindoro. (Photo credit: Gregg Yan)

Going Once, Going Twice... Fortunately, conservation has been proven to work. By protecting their last remaining habitats, even ranching them for commercial purposes, the last 500 plains bison recovered. Today, about 20,000 of them remain in the wild, with nearly 500,000 kept in ranches. It’s a far cry from the vast herds that thundered free across America, but at least they didn’t follow the path of the passenger pigeon. Our own country is a hotbed for biodiversity, with many species considered critically endangered—just a step above extinction. The tamaraw, Philippine eagle, and Philippine crocodile are all in this very precarious category.

Volume 17, Number 12 • February 2017

Rampant deforestation, land conversion, coastal degradation, pollution, climate change, disease, and the introduction of foreign species are some of the major causes of biodiversity decline. Fortunately, we have our own version of America’s bison story. An estimated 10,000 tamaraw— an endemic buffalo found solely on Mindoro—thrived in the early 1900s. The species was decimated by widespread logging and hunting, plus an outbreak of rinderpest contracted from imported cattle. In 1969, tamaraw numbers dropped to less than 100 heads. Today, due to strong conservation, enforcement, and education efforts between the Far Eastern University, Tamaraw Conservation Programme, nonprofits, and local communities, the

population has risen to 401—again, not the 10,000 from a century ago, but still better than being wiped out. So are we winning the war against extinction? Not yet, but we’re buying our endangered animals time. Someday soon, I hope humanity finds ways to progress without destroying our planet’s natural resource base. Until then, the dedication of conservation champions and our love not just for animals, but for our home planet will dictate how many species we can take into the next centuries. Conservationist Sir Peter Scott, a founder of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), said it best: “We shan’t save all that we should like to—but we shall save a great deal more than if we had never tried.”

AB BIT BIITING I ISSUE: TETANUS, PETS, AND AVOIDANCE (PART TWO OF TWO PARTS) Text by RICHARD LEO BORROMEO RAMOS etanus is a disease humans can pick up from animals, yet it isn’t as well known as rabies. Animal Scene presents you with more useful information on this dangerous and potentially deadly disease. Tetanus may be a serious disease for pet owners and pets alike, but with a little environmental management and medical preparation, we can minimize the chances of tetanus infection happening to our beloved ed fur babies or us.

T

CAN ANIMALS BE INFECTED WITH TETANUS? TETAN We know they can carry and transmit the disease so this may come as a surprise, but animals— specifically, dogs and cats—can be affected by tetanus. As with humans, the main sources of infection are puncture wounds, bites, and clawing wounds. If your pet has been involved in a brawl with other 78

pets or animals, you should be on the lookout for the symptoms of tetanus as they apply to your pet. It should be noted that cats and dogs are usually very resistant to tetanus, so there are supposedly no official vaccination shots for cats and dogs. Some vaccinations for horses can be used for dogs,

but the effectivity of such for cats and dogs seems to be a matter up for debate even among veterinarians. It's best to consult with your own vet. The incubation period for tetanus in pets usually run from a few days to a few weeks, and it varies with the type of cat or dog (including what breed they are).

TETANUS IN DOGS Dogs are not as resistant to tetanus as cats are, but they are still more resistant to it than humans are. That said, the following are symptoms of tetanus in dogs. It should be noted that dogs, unlike cats, seem to get the generalized version of tetanus, rather than the localized version. • Neck and jaw muscles become stiff • Their legs are rigid when they are standing • Muscle spasms • Pain reaction when touched • Stiff tail • Drooling • Unusual or abnormal facial expressions • Swollen face • Fever • Difficulty breathing and eating • Dehydration • Constipation

Tetanus treatment for dogs is more involving than it is for cats, with the following: • Rehydration • Oxygen therapy • Muscle relaxants, tranquilizers, or sedatives may be prescribed to ease the muscle spasms • Antibiotics may be given to prevent the growth of the tetanus bacteria • Tetanus antitoxin, separate from the antibiotics, may be given to combat the poisons that the bacteria manufactures Although your pet dog may be taken home after a few days in clinical care, it's suggested that you let them stay in a quiet, dark area. PREVENTION Although tetanus is a serious disease, the general prevention for tetanus is quite simple: KEEP THINGS CLEAN. That means that as much as possible, your surroundings, particularly those that you and your pet interact with, are kept as clean as possible. Obviously, this doesn’t work as well if you have an area with soil and dirt, such as a garden, but making sure that all other areas are clean makes for a minimized risk for tetanus infection. For your pets, you should also do the following: Regular baths Keep their claws trimmed

Developing Symptoms

If you are already developing symptoms of tetanus, you should head to the ER immediately. Aside from the tetanus immunoglobulin injection, doctors will also use antibiotics and medicines to help you with muscle stiffness and spasms.

It should be noted that the fatality rate is low for the general version of tetanus, and that proper medical treatment will have you up and about in a few months.

3

If You Are Traveling Or Working With Animals

If you will be traveling to places where there are wild animals, or if you will take on a job that involves animals, it is always important to make sure that you are properly vaccinated against tetanus. In addition, even if you are properly vaccinated, do make sure to present your vaccination history to a doctor if you have experienced a cut or wound that you think may be risky for tetanus.

SAY HELLO TO YOUR HEALTH CENTER Local treatment for tetanus is relatively easy, particularly for those in the city. Many local health centers or clinics have vaccination programs for children and adults, depending on the time of the year. This also applies to some hospitals. Do contact your local barangay offices, clinics, or hospitals to find out when and where their vaccination programs will be active. If you find that there are no such programs available in your area, major drugstore chains that are allowed to handle and store vaccines usually have the various tetanus vaccine types in stock. The prices for each shot range from ৊ 100 to ৊ 1,000, depending on the h type. Do D consult l with your family doctor or nearby medical center, so you can properly acquire and use the vaccines.

DOG BITE PREVENTION Text by MARIELLE ALMARIO 82 Animal Scene

Sometimes it’s inevitable that we misread the signs at first or we don’t actually know what the signs are that a dog might want to be left alone. Animal Scene, with the Pet Food Institute (PFI), has compiled these tips for preventing dog bites and on how to recognize when we’re aggravating dogs. Believe it or not, you probably will say, “Why didn’t I think of that?” when you read these tips. That’s because you probably already know them as part of common sense. Read on.

Volume 17, Number 12 • February 2017

ENDANGERED! DID YOU KNOW?

THE ROLE OF SOCIALIZATION The PFI quotes the American Veterinary Medical Association belief that proper social exercises for dogs and people help prevent dog bites. “Socialization, or when a puppy is introduced to new people, places and locations, should begin between 3 and 14 weeks of age. The AVMA recommends that a plan be developed for the different environments that will be a part of your new dog’s life.” “Once your puppy comes home, if you live in a city, slowly introduce your dog to situations with people and traffic. You can also carefully expose your pet to people wearing hats, carrying umbrellas, or holding other everyday objects that could be

Volume 17, Number 12 • February 2017

perceived as a threat.” Remember to think from your dog’s point of view to make this easier. And a simple reminder: “Don’t forget: make sure your dog is fully vaccinated before he or she is exposed to areas with a high likelihood of unvaccinated dogs.” While this might seem obvious, it’s because Filipinos are not very responsible when it comes to keeping up the vaccinations of their pets, so even a “safe” dog park might have at least 75% of the dogs present be unvaccinated. Better safe than sorry— especially “…if you have adopted an older dog and are unsure of his or her socialization history, take time to bond with your pet and get to learn their temperament before introducing your dog to a whole new array of experiences.”

KIDS, DOGS, AND SPACE Interacting with dogs differs from dog to dog, and nobody can resist a dog just sitting off the side looking all docile. This is what attracts some children as well, but that can also cause problems for the dog owner and the parent of the child. Because children are easily excitable, it’s important to teach them how to approach dogs, whether they are the family’s own or a complete stranger’s dog. Teaching a kid simple things like asking if they can pet the dog is a good start to let them know to be careful when it comes to dealing with dogs.

Animal Scene 83

ENDANGERED! DID YOU KNOW?

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT RESPECT AND PERSONAL SPACE At the heart of this list are a human’s and dog’s socializing skills. If a dog has learned good socializing skills, then it will be easy for a person to know their dog’s moods as well as being a helpful tool for the dog to adapt to different people and places. As for people skills, it’s more of knowing when to back off when it comes to a dog and its personal space—which may be a problem for Filipinos, as too many of us don’t know about, let alone respect, the idea of personal space, least of all for an animal. • One thing that people (this writer included) who have been victimized forget when it comes to dog bites is that we neglect to let the dog—even if it’s your own—see or sniff you first. Attempting to pet a dog without letting them see you or even allowing them to sniff you out first if you’re a legitimate threat or not is a common cause of dog bites. • How about when a dog is sleeping? Don’t touch them; when startled, a dog can and will hurt you. • What if the dog is eating? Biggest mistake. Do not try to shift its food bowl or fix any spilled food. Let your dog be; if you try anything, he or she will see you as a threat to their food and they cannot be blamed if their primal instincts take over. • This goes double for a dog caring for their pups. No matter how adorable the little puppies may be, parent dogs are aggressively territorial and you will be seen as a threat, owner or not. Respect a dog’s personal space and they won’t lash out. Remember, though, all dogs are different. So when an owner says that their dog shouldn’t be petted, it’s better to follow the owner and respect their wishes. Not all dogs are okay with being petted by strangers, so it’s a good idea to ask the owner beforehand. Nobody wants an accidental bloody hand.

84 Animal Scene

DOGGIE BODY LANGUAGE It’s important to pay attention to a dog’s body language. This means being on the lookout for signals that means a dog is uncomfortable or may bite. Some of them being: • Tensed body • Barking or growling in a warning fashion • Stiff tail • Intense stare • Pricked up or flattened ears • Flicking of the tongue • In some cases, rolling over and exposing the belly If those signs are visible, that means you need to back off. But whatever you do, don’t turn around and run. A dog’s natural instinct will be to chase after you. Nobody wants that and it would be best to just back away slowly until the dog loses interest in you or are out of sight.

1. HOBBES (CALVIN AND HOBBES BY BILL WATTERSON): He may be stuffed but yes, Hobbes is an animal. He encompasses both the roles of mighty companion in the midst of a great battle—albeit only in Calvin’s imagination—and the faithful pet you hold tight to your chest after a long day at school that, frankly, sucked. Fuzzy, ferocious, and only faintly annoying at times, a six-year-old couldn’t ask for a better buddy.

Volume 17, Number 12 • February 2017

DID YOU KNOW? Tigers (Panthera tigris) are the largest cats and are typically solitary; Hobbes maintains that his kind exhibits a kind of undisputed grace but no one can really know that since they’re nearly always alone, save for when a tigress has cubs. Unlike the other great cats, tigers don’t utilize their sense of smell when hunting. They can live up to 20 years in the wilderness of Eurasia.

2. PEGASUS (GREEK MYTHOLOGY): A true legend whose story was formed and told along with those of great heroes, this divine winged stallion was already assisting in quests against other more dangerous beasts, bringing fallen demigod heroes to Olympus on his back. What he symbolizes has changed through the ages, but since the end of World War II, the ying horse has been an emblem of British Airborne 6th Division’s successful capture and defense of what is now known as the “Pegasus Bridge.â€?

DID YOU KNOW? No one has attempted to scientiďŹ cally classify Pegasus himself so far, but horses (Equus caballus) have proven to be pretty fascinating in their own right. Narcolepsy in humans was only identiďŹ ed over a century ago, but wasn’t properly studied as a disorder until about the 1970s; for horses, it was an even more recent discovery.

when we’re talking about Tolkien. While not strictly sidekicks, they do come to Gandalf’s (or another worthy hero’s) aid when the need is dire. It’s just that they’re not at Gandalf’s beck and call, nor do they answer to any human or halfling.

4. THE QILIN (CHINESE MYTHOLOGY): A slightly terrifying creature, the Qilin is often described as having a vaguely equine body, although some scrolls and records describe it as being more deer-like. Said to be covered in scales like a fish, it is enveloped in flames that do not consume it. While loyal to no particular human, the Qilin is said to be the protector of the innocent, and the symbol of a benevolent, prosperous dynasty or ruler. Legend has it that one visited the mother of Confucius while she was pregnant with him, signaling the coming of a great sage.

than 60 species of eagle exist throughout the world, most of which can be found in Eurasia; only about 14 of these can be found anywhere else. There’s a popular notion that eagles mate for life, but what’s truly interesting, if avian romance isn’t your thing, is that several of these species don’t seem to be related to each other at all, and have only been classified together on the basis of appearance and behavior. But genetically? They’re no more related to one another than they are to a hawk or a parrot.

DID YOU KNOW? Deer (Cervidae) are naturally marvelous creatures, but they also have exhibited this incredible talent for befriending humans these days. They have been known to approach people, so the Confucius story isn’t too far-fetched. They come in many colors and sizes depending on where you go, from the Philippine mouse-deer to the elks of Sweden, and most of them are pretty friendly. Volume 17, Number 12 • February 2017

5. HEDWIG (HARRY POTTER BY J.K. ROWLING): Picture it—a young Harry Potter, after discovering the truth of his heritage, is told that he may bring one creature with him to school. A snowy white owl grips his attention when he looks around the shop at Diagon Alley, and Hedwig leaves with him in her brass cage. A truer feathered friend no one will ever find, too; towards the end of Harry’s tumultuous youth, she lays down her life to save the Boy Who Lived. It is theorized by fans that Harry never bought another owl.

DID YOU KNOW? The snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus), in real life, is quite a fun bird in that it’s diurnal. We’re pretty sure Hedwig got more sleep than most of her kin, though. Female snowy owls can lay anywhere between 3 to 11 eggs at a time and actually never become completely white. The owl’s diet kind of determines whether or not they migrate, depending on how much a particular owl likes lemmings. The less picky ones will make do with other small woodland animals, but the amazing thing is that the snowy owl isn’t indiscriminate about what it pursues; it perches somewhere nearby and takes its time identifying its prey before going in for the kill.

6. CHARLOTTE A. CAVATICA (CHARLOTTE’S WEB BY E.B. WHITE): Despite being the title character, Charlotte the spider would probably insist on being called Wilbur’s sidekick. It is her capacity for love and her great wit that make her a true heroine and a true friend, and a wonderful mother both to Wilbur and the offspring she would never get to see. She teaches readers about the value of planning for the future, and not worrying even when the end is near.

DID YOU KNOW? The barn spider (Araneus cavaticus) is a fantastic creature to have around. Posing no threat to humans or to livestock, their entire bodies are hairy, and they exhibit a relatively obvious difference between sexes. Like other spiders, the females are larger; the difference can be anywhere between 6 to 10 millimeters. They’ll keep mosquitoes down to a minimum and so, like Charlotte, just might save a couple of lives! Volume 17, Number 12 • February 2017

8. FIVER (WATERSHIP DOWN BY RICHARD ADAMS): Again,

7. THE EARTHWORM, THE CENTIPEDE, THE LADY-BUG, ETC. (JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH BY ROALD DAHL): You would think that the first thing you’d do when you grow to be larger than those who try to squash you is try to squash them right back--but not these creatures. Instead, they remember the kindness of a small boy who refused to do the bidding of his evil aunts, and invite him along on their grand escape.

DID YOU KNOW?

For every human being, there are an estimated 200 million insects and related invertebrates? It’s enough to make your skin crawl sometimes, until you think about it in terms of what they contribute to the environment. Ladybugs (coccinellidae) for example, being the cutest, eat up aphids, which breed fast and destroy gardens and crops. Even centipedes (chilopoda), which are venomous, get rid of the pests your house spider (Parasteatoda tepidariorum) doesn’t eat, so it’s really best to leave them be. They’re not interested in harming you at all.

88 Animal Scene

ANOTHER FUN FACT:

Spiders generally tend to adapt to the environments they’re born in, so don’t shoo a barn spider from a barn or a house spider from your house. Don’t even let a garden spider indoors when the weather is harsh. They just won’t survive the sudden change.

not strictly a sidekick, given that he and Hazel are brothers. But Fiver is an incredible character who proves himself to be indispensable despite his physical weakness. His connection with nature and the spirit world is his main strength, though often scoffed by bigger rabbits who see this as a reason to push him around. In the end, he is the reason that the warren he and his brother seek to build survives.

DID YOU KNOW? The main lesson here is to never underestimate the runt of the litter. Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) are, as a species, pretty resilient. They have an extremely short gestation period of about a month, have particularly heightened senses, and can make use of their own droppings, technically called pellets, when food is hard to come by in the winter. They’re also marvelously social creatures, to the point that a lone rabbit can die of loneliness, which is why if you’re thinking of getting one, don’t. Get a fluffle--er, a couple.

AQUA BASICS

LET’S DO OUR SHARE... DON’T DUMP Text by ANGEL L. AMPIL

iewing Facebook one day, I found myself reading a thread posted by a friend, Prime Jamethzkie, at the Monster Fish Keepers Philippines FB page. His post started with “MFKPh promotes responsible fish keeping!” and is supported by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) poster that reads, “Don’t Dump! Invading species threaten Philippine lakes and fisheries.”

AQUA BASICS

This was such a great topic that it garnered at least 125 likes in a few hours and had a lot of comments and reactions from fellow ďŹ shkeepers. A lot of people shared their thoughts about the issue. For the most part, they supported BFAR’s campaign to encourage ďŹ shkeepers not to release aquarium ďŹ shes to our local waters. They were well aware of the implications of such an act and how it may eventually destroy the environment. Unfortunately among those who commented, there were actually some who did not agree. Maybe they did not get the point, or just did not care or maybe they just did not have the capability to comprehend the issue because of their own selďŹ sh reasons. I would have reacted against their reply but then that would only solicit more negative comments from people who were outright defensive and to some point, arrogant. So with a lot of constraints, I held off my comments and decided to write this article instead because it means only one thing: not everyone is convinced of the dangers of introducing foreign ďŹ shes in our waters. Thus, there is a need to explain the facts and hopefully this article will clarify the issue and convince ďŹ shkeepers to understand the whole problem. To have a better understanding of the issue, it is best to know the classiďŹ cation system used to determine the origins of ďŹ shes. This should put everyone reading this article on the same page.

FISH ORIGIN CLASSIFICATIONS ENDEMIC: A biological taxon native to and restricted to a particular area or region and not found naturally anywhere else in the world (https:// www.galapagos.org/ about_galapagos/ about-galapagos/library/ conservation_glossary/). Therefore, a ďŹ sh is considered endemic if that ďŹ sh species is only found in that country. An endemic ďŹ sh I am quite familiar with is the Kanduli (Arius manillensis), a catďŹ sh that can live in fresh and salt water endemic to the island of Luzon and found in Laguna de Bay, Pasig River, and the waterways in Laguna, Bataan, Cavite and Navotas. If I am not mistaken, these catďŹ shes can be caught in Manila Bay too.

biological taxon native to a particular area or region; but can be found naturally in other areas as well (https://www.galapagos. org/about_galapagos/ about-galapagos/library/ conservation_glossary/). Therefore, a ďŹ sh is considered native if that ďŹ sh species is naturally found in that country and other countries as well. Surprisingly, the Dwarf Pygmy Goby or Philippine Goby (Pandaka pygmaea), which was originally reported from the Malabon River, it is considered native to the Philippines despite specimens recently having been collected in Bali, Sulawesi, and Singapore (http://eol.org/ pages/211944/details).

biological taxon that is not native or indigenous to a particular area or region and that has been accidentally or deliberately introduced into the area (https:// www.galapagos.org/ about_galapagos/ about-galapagos/library/ conservation_glossary/). Therefore, a ďŹ sh is considered “introducedâ€? if it is a foreign ďŹ sh that has established itself here in the Philippines. A popular introduced ďŹ sh that is commonly seen in the Pasig and Marikina Rivers is the Janitor Fish (Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus). This originally came from South America and has established itself in Philippine rivers.

INVASIVE: If the introduced ďŹ sh has established itself in local waters and has proven to have detrimental effects in the local ecosystem, then it is deemed invasive. An invasive species is deďŹ ned as a species that is non-native to an ecosystem and whose introduction causes cause economic, environmental or health harm to humans (http://eol.org/ info/460). An invasive ďŹ sh species that recently caught the attention of the public is the Clown KnifeďŹ sh (Chitala ornata). Being a top predator, it established itself in Laguna de Bay and ate its way to the top of the food chain. It has devastated the ďŹ shing industry in the area, causing losses for ďŹ sh farmers and ďŹ shermen, and the extinction of some ďŹ sh species.

AQUA BASICS

THE DAMAGE IRRESPONSIBLE FISHKEEPERS HAVE DONE A lot of foreign fishes have already been released in our local waters. The poster depicts the Clown Knifefish (C ornata), Jaguar Guapote (Parachromis managuensis), Janitor Fish (P disjunctivus and a few more species), Gloria (Sarotherodon melanotheron), and Giant Thai Snakehead (Channa micropeltes). This of course is just the tip of the iceberg. There are of course many more foreign fishes that have found their way in our waters and become invasive. In some of the Facebook groups I am a member of, I have seen some fishkeepers share pictures of aquarium fishes they have caught in their local waterways. I remember some fishkeepers posted pictures of Mayan Cichlids (Cichlasoma urophthalmus), Flower Horns, Leopard Catfish (the crossbreed between Phractocephalus hemioliopterus and Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum), and Midas Cichlid (Amphilophus citrinellus), among others. I am pretty much aware too that some fishes like the Tiger Barb (Puntigrus tetrazona), Aurelius Barbs (Dawkinsia arulius), One Spot Barb (Puntius filamentosus), Mollies (Poecilia sphenops), Guppies (Poecilia reticulata), and others are caught on the tributaries along Laguna de Bay and are sold in some pet shops. They are no longer farmed because you can just catch them in the waterways. I personally do not believe that Laguna de Bay has been a haven for invasive fishes because it was work of a few fishkeepers who deliberately threw in those fishes in the Bay. For such a huge

lake and such an extensive problem in terms of number of fish species involved and huge population of these invasive fishes in the lake, I do believe it required a massive introduction of these foreign fishes in the lake. My theory is that Laguna de Bay is the largest body of water in Luzon because it is also the deepest part of the island. Therefore all waterways will eventually lead to the Bay. It is also a known fact that there are a lot of aquarium fish farms in Pila, Victoria and all other surrounding towns along Laguna de Bay. With an average of 22 typhoons a year, most certainly flooding will occur in these low-lying fish farms that would release aquarium fishes by the thousands—maybe ten thousands— enough to seed Laguna de Bay with introduced fishes that have the volume to reproduce to a viable population. The fishkeepers may not have released them but the reason there are aquarium fish farmers in the surrounding areas of Laguna de Bay is the fact that it is a good industry that has fed their families for many generations. These fish farmers sell their produce to us, the fishkeepers. Let us admit it to ourselves, our being fishkeepers make us liable in promoting this current problem of introducing invasive species in Philippine waters. Because we love aquarium fishes, these exotic fishes are brought in by importers and fish farmers because we want them. We created the demand. If there were no demand, then there wouldn’t be any aquarium fish industry.

take on this is that we should not be the problem, but rather the solution. So it is high time that we fishkeepers be more responsible in fishkeeping. A man I look up to, Rafael Guerrero III of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), in an article published in 2016 clearly pointed out the solution to the problem: “A massive information, education, and communication campaign to stir up public awareness for responsible aquarium pet care and environmental protection is recommended.” Thus as fishkeepers we should take up this challenge. We should take part in this massive information, education, and communication campaign. We should educate fellow fishkeepers on the dangers of introducing our aquarium fishes in the wild. We must make sure our tanks are safe from flooding. We should be more responsible and protect our environment. In our own little ways, we can contribute, like sharing the BFAR poster with others. Let’s do our share. Don’t dump. I also recommend that fish clubs, fish Facebook groups, and other organizations should have an adaption program for unwanted fishes. This not only prevents fishes from being thrown in local waters but it also gives other fishkeepers a chance to keep fishes. Remember that we the fishkeepers are not the problem, but we are the solution! I just did my share in campaigning for this… when will you?

This is the situation we are in. My

Digital Pets Provide Elderly with Companionship Pat Richards and her virtual cat, Bella, met in March 2017 when Bella moved in with Pat to help her remain living healthy at home and stay connected with her primary care team at Element Care PACE. Bella’s primary responsibility is to be a health coach, but she also provides 24/7 social support and engaging activities for Pat throughout the day.

Text by LEE MANNION atricia Richards, who is 64 years old and lives in Salem, Massachusetts, looks forward to her daily chats with her cat Bella. “I love Bella very, very much. She’s helpful...she does a lot of things for me and I’m so happy she’s in my house,” said Richards.

P

Except Bella isn’t like most animals. As well as being able to talk, Bella checks if Patricia has taken her medication, plays the rock ‘n’ roll music she likes and reassures her when she is feeling anxious. Because Bella is a digital pet that exists on a tablet. She was created by Care Coach, a social enterprise that is competing with traditional models of care for the elderly in terms of cost, flexibility, and resources. As companies providing statefunded care work to deliver services with sometimes dwindling finances, technology is offering a way to balance challenging budgets.

Digital Care: In the United States, advances in healthcare and a public better informed about healthy lifestyles has lead to an increasingly aging population. One in five of the nation’s population will be 65 or older by 2030, according to a 2014 government report. Richards’ welfare is managed by healthcare organization Element Care, which has engaged Care Coach to provide the pets. Element is now looking to increase the 15 current users because of the benefits that have resulted. Not only has Richards’ wellbeing improved but the company has saved money on the cost of her care, it says. She was selected for the digital pet because of repeated visits to the hospital whilst suffering anxiety and a shortage of breath related to smoking. The pet also provides 24-hour care, whereas the care center she attends is only open during office hours Monday to Friday. Richards will now talk to the

pet if she is short of breath. Bella will guide her through breathing exercises and play music to calm her down. This has prevented 13 hospital visits to the emergency department so far, Seavey said. Staff time has also been freed up as a result. Rising care costs: This is good news for taxpayers. As the care provider, Element’s budget comes from the statefunded Medicare Programs of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), which aims to keep people living independently, instead of going to a nursing home. Care costs will inevitably rise as people live longer lives. People aged 80 and older account for a third of all the Medicare spending in the United States, according to a 2015 report by the Kaiser Family Foundation. Care Coach’s 30-year-old founder, Victor Wang, was inspired by the experience of his own family, who were living in the United States and trying to care for his grandmother, who was living alone in Taiwan. “She was very lonely, she got depressed and then she was diagnosed with dementia,” said Wang, who said the avatars have also been used to monitor hospital patients. The pets—users can choose between a dog or a cat—are voiced by staff in the Philippines, who can see and hear users and voice the pets’ responses with a textto-speech system. Richards doesn’t keep a strict routine, so will talk to her pet at any hour of the day and night. The data helps care staff monitor sleeping patterns, which contributes to good health.

ANIMAL LIFE AND DEATH

101 CREMATIONS:

the rise of Bangkok’s Buddhist pet funerals ANGKOK (AFP) - Buddhist monks chant next to a pink coffin where Dollar's small body is nestled amongst flowers -- a $600 final farewell for the Shih Tzu at a Bangkok temple that administers elaborate pet funerals.

B

Dollar's owner, Pimrachaya Worakijmanotham, fights back tears as she takes a last fond look at her six-yearold pet dog, whose tousled grey-white body rests under jasmine garlands. "This is the last time I can be with her... so I want Dollar to receive good things," Pimrachaya, dressed in black and wearing sunglasses, told AFP, a framed photo of "her child" Dollar behind her.

In a devout Buddhist kingdom where religion and superstitious beliefs entwine, some pet owners believe the monk-led send off will boost their pets' chances of being reincarnated as a higher being. Pet cremations, complete with Buddhist rituals, are popping up across Bangkok for dogs, cats and even monkeys (AFP)

At least three temples offer daily services, including a monk-led ceremony, cremation and sprinkling of ashes in rivers -– the symbolic ritual of returning earthly remains to nature. Theerawat Sae-Han, the founder of Pet Funeral Thailand, says his company cremates more than 200 animals each month, from cats and dogs, to monitor lizards, snakes and baboons. "Successful or famous animals like fighting cocks who won the awards will also be brought for cremation," said Theerawat, a former pet salon owner who jumped into the "good" business of full-blown pet cremation four years ago. 96

Animal Scene

"In this life, she (Dollar) couldn't go to the temples to make merit for herself. This is the only thing we can do for her," Pimrachaya, who is a banker, said. The trend is not unique to Thailand -- Japan is particularly fond of lavish goodbyes to its pets.

According to Buddhist belief, merit garnered in each life eventually leads to nirvana -– the state of non-suffering.

But in Bangkok it is catching on fast as Thais increasingly see pets as family members.

His temple has partnered with Theerawat's company and now has a ceremonial compound and cremation chambers.

Thailand's junta is examining temple finances across the country as it seeks to improve the image of a religion which has been hit by a stream of financial scandals in recent years.

While it makes for a good business -starting prices are around 3,000 baht (around $91) but the most extravagant services cost up to 100,000 baht -- the monk says the funerals have brought people closer to religion. "Some people might not have a chance to come to the temple at all. When their pets die, they come here," said Phrakru Samu Jumpol, adding the pet-lovers will be taught the Buddhist lesson that "all things are temporary." So far, the temple has not faced criticism for its business links.

For pet lovers, the service provides spiritual succor at a time of great pain. At the end of a ceremony to spread the ashes of her Siberian husky Maprang in November, teary-eyed Tipaporn Ounsiri found cause for optimism. "If the next life exists, please come back and be my daughter, don't be born as a pet anymore," she said. Volume 17, Number 12 • February 2017

For Pet’s Sake

PETS CAN BE OUR BEST FRIENDS FOREVER Text by RAMON FRANCISCO he celebration‌ or party is ours. Pets have become a serious matter to ponder.

T

Pets were traumatized by the minimal noise last New Year’s Eve. Keeping them home safe and sound is a sure formula for de-stressing them. But humans are still their stewards. Pets have become welcome at many restaurants in Mega Manila. But animal welfare groups do not rest on their laurels. They are on guard to check the anti-rabies shots of pets. Barangay leaders have started listing pets with rabies shots and their owners. Barangay patrols keep streets safe from stray dogs and cats with children as potential rabies patients. Police checkpoints in the provinces stand guard against “double killing or the meat of slaughtered dogs peddled in the rural areas an appetizer or viands on the table. Pets do have “unconditional love for their masters. A checkup with competent veterinarians may be a belated Christmas gift or better still a Valentine’s gift pets will cherish for a long time. After all, pets can be our best friends forever.
