Foreword

The future belongs to the young I don't make a habit of opening a text with a cliché but I'll gladly make an exception for the title above.

After all, this piece of folk wisdom probably applies to the energy sector more than most, as it is constantly preoccupied with the future.We do little other than think about and anticipate what lies in wait for us. Where will we be in 10 years, in 20 years, or even further into the future? What will the world energy supply look like at the end of the century? What role will our present-day energy sources have in the energy mix by that time? How sustainable will our energy economy be by then? The best answers to these questions will not come from the present generation but from the next one, who as we know are currently still studying in our universities. It is there that the foundation for the energy policy of the future will be laid.

I'm a great supporter of bundling together our knowledge and expertise about energy. We do not have a higher education establishment in the Netherlands which specialises exclusively in education and research on energy issues.That is remarkable. Energy was and is the ‘life blood’ of the world economy and so it will remain. For that reason it is food for numerous academic disciplines: economics, technology, natural sciences, but also disciplines that at first sight we would not think of such as sociology, psychology and other social sciences. In short, it is time to join forces. And that is exactly what we are going to do. Thanks to the support of the Province of Groningen, the academic community in this city and several local organisations we will be able to make a change. I had the honour to offer an elaborated plan for an Energy Academy in Groningen to our prime minister Mark Rutte in January. After all, where better to do this than in the north of the Netherlands, in Energy Valley, the region where most of the country's natural gas is found, where tens of energy companies are operating and investing, and where also one of our oldest and most venerable universities is located? Here we can establish an international energy institute, bringing together knowledge and research on the field of energy in the broadest sense of the word, an institute which will act as a magnet for young talent from both home and abroad.

Initiatives such as the International NRG Battle (www.NRGbattle.nl) and also the GasTerra Energy Transition Award (www.energietransitieprijs.nl) fit in seamlessly with this. We are overflowing with initiatives and projects in the energy field, but you can really never have enough.Their practicality and the added value they bring, will ultimately determine whether the energy economy actually uses them to make progress. But to increase the chance of achieving genuine breakthroughs we must nevertheless continue to look for new, innovative, even crazy ‘out of the box’ solutions. Students, who are not yet too badly infected with the virus of feasibility, seem to me to be the right people to do this.

All in all I have very high expectations of this new round of the International NRG Battle.Who knows, we might find just the golden egg we are looking for this time, which will make all our recent ideas, discoveries and innovations superfluous.

So … put your name down and do your best!

E.ON produces and supplies gas and electricity for more than 26 million customers in 30 countries.Worldwide, E.ON employs around 88.000 people. Fijn Van Draat: "In our sustainability strategy, we follow the ‘trias energetica’, the well-known model for initiation of the energy transition. E.ON contributes to all three mainstays of this model, and initiates developments accordingly.We promote the first mainstay among our consumers, i.e. the reduction of unnecessary energy consumption.We set a good example in our own operating processes.The second mainstay is deployment of reusable energy.We have always made extensive use of hydroelectric power stations, and are also involved in the application and further development of other reusable sources, such as sun and wind. Finally, the third mainstay is the economic and efficient use of fossil sources. E.ON is working at the reduction of CO2 emissions by building high tech power plants and applying CO2 storage at existing plants.”

Projects Worldwide, E.ON is working at further sustainability of the energy production process, which is the second mainstay of the trias energetica. “E.ON has built the world's largest wind park at Roscoe in Texas, in the United States.The park was commissioned in 2009, and contains 627 wind turbines which together produce 780 Megawatts, to supply 230,000 American households with electricity. Another impressive project is Desertec, in which 11 large German companies are to harvest solar electricity in the Sahara in Africa.This power plant, with a price ticket of 400 billion, will supply 15% of the European energy requirements. Construction work is expected to get underway in 2015, and will take at least five years.”

Prosumers

E.ON is the largest private supplier of electricity and gas in Europe. The exhaustibility of fossil fuels is an important theme for this large market player too. “We are on the way to rendering 50% of our production CO2-free, in order to make an important contribution to a greater share of renewable energy”, says Sander Fijn Van Draat, Project Manager Corporate Strategy at E.ON Benelux.

Another important development foreseen by Fijn Van Draat is the concept of ‘prosumers’.These are consumers who also produce electricity themselves. “ The most obvious version is the central heating boiler which generates electricity: the HRe boiler or combined heating and power system, known as CHP.We are already carrying out the first consumer tests in countries ready for such a system, such as the UK. Heat pumps also supply energy, just like solar panels and solar boilers.This decentralisation of energy production is closer than we think, this also applies to the Netherlands. It will certainly change the energy landscape considerably. All kinds of technical adaptations are required in order to maintain the current quality of energy supply, for example.We hope the participants in the NRG Battle will have some useful ideas on this.”

Nearly 2.5 million families all over the Netherlands received a dimmable Pharox 6 watt LED bulb, good for replacing a light bulb up to 60 watts.

Energy savings up to 90%, life time up to 25 years and up to 50% more efficient than a Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL), A less known fact: the LED bulb contains no mercury like the CFL does. The payback time, assuming use of the light bulb for 4 hours per day, is maximum 1,5 years. More information on www.pharox-led.com.

Meanwhile, the same LED technology was applied in public street lighting in many communities in different

countries. On top of that, we have shown spectacular results in greenhouse lighting.

Another subsidiary of Tendris, RePay International, developed in 2004 the first sustainable credit card in the world: the Visa Greencard. The CO2 emissions following business and personal expenses paid for with the green card are quantified and compensated automatically.

The awareness of the cardholder increases significantly by making the CO2 emissions transparent. The cardholder himself can choose from several projects to offset his personal CO2 emissions, such as renewable energy, forestry, energy or capture of greenhouse gas. Companies as well

There were a number of barriers to electric vehicles prohibiting it to be introduced to a broad audience.

Moving towards an ‘all-electric’ society On the basis of global megatrends, Siemens is predicting an energy sector that becomes more sustainable. We are moving towards an ‘all-electric’ society where electricity is the most important source of energy. Electricity will also be used to heat houses and buildings and to drive our cars, i.e. electric driving. Energy will be generated in a clean and sustainable way.

The prognosis for the energy requirements for the coming 20 years suggests that we cannot cover demand with sustainable energy sources. We will be in a transitional phase where we use a mix of traditional and new types of generation. This will be an interesting transition period, where we progress by trial and error.

The question is which sources will we use over the next 20 years? Clean fossil fuel or nuclear? I expect it will be a

It is a fantastic challenge.

Power to the people Two years ago the International Energy Agency (IEA) pleaded for an energy revolution in its World Energy Outlook report. I believe that, if we want to secure our prosperity and well-being over the course of the next decennia, we should be willing to leave the dead end road that is our wasteful and contaminating economy.

To me it is not a matter of whether or not this change will take place, but of how and how quickly we will be able to adapt to the economical and ecological consequences. The vast lobby power of the large established parties on the fossil energy market

will be used on all levels in order to hold off the revolution for as long as possible. The cheapest and cleanest energy is the energy you do not use.

In many cases this could lead to saving up to 80%. Saving energy is the most profitable first step towards a completely renewable energy mix. In order to generate the energy we can change to “decentralised renewable”.

Wind, sun, geothermal energy and numerous other new technologies that are currently becoming more popular will be the most important energy sources of the near future. Ultimately, this literally comes down to “power

to the people”. Apart from economical and geopolitical changes this will lead to a paradigm shift in our minds.

Energy Valley: Top of the Dutch energy transition The Energy Valley region in the Northern Netherlands has over 400 companies and 25.000 people that are actively involved in the development of a modern and sustainable energy economy.

The current energy investments exceed â‚Ź25 billion in the coming 5 years, forming an integrated system to pave the way for a reliable, affordable and clean energy supply in Northwestern Europe.

The region is right on top of the national gas reserves and in the middle of the European gas grid, with extensive investments in new pipelines, enhanced gas exploration and storage facilities. This is carried by a strong concentration of multinationals in the gas industry, subcontractors and leading European gas knowledge.

This position as European Gas Roundabout is utilized to enable the shift to a sustainable energy supply.

Not only because natural gas is the cleanest fossil fuel, but also through the development of several Green Gas Hubs, to produce vast amounts of green gas from biomass that can be injected directly into the regular gas grid.

Gas can also offer vital flexibility for inflexible energy from for instance wind or solar. This fits perfectly in

the fast growing power cluster in the region, with the development of large offshore wind parks, three new power plants and transnational power connections to Norway and Denmark.

There are also several projects for decentralized energy solutions, for instance in the first European domestic Smart Grid pilot, but also in several Industrial Energy Transition Parks.

The strong waste processing and agro-industry in the region is actively involved in the development of a strong bio based economy. Not only through green gas, but also by the production of bio-coal, bio-methanol and biodiesel, connected to the energy and chemical cluster in the region.

Science and companies are brought together in several research programs and knowledge centres in close interaction with energy specialists throughout Europe. This is supported by the Energy Valley Foundation to unite public and private partners in practical projects and pilots.

Trendsetters in energy research and education Peter Rehwinkel Mayor Groningen

The city and its knowledge institutions have joined forces to further develop Groningen’s position as the knowledge and innovation centre of the northern Netherlands. Under the framework of the Groningen Agreement (Het Akkoord van Groningen), the city, province and knowledge institutions are all working closely together as partners for the long-term development of several shared priority areas. Energy is one of these major areas.

Energy is a major issue for the city of Groningen. Thanks to the natural gas production in the region, the city is not only a major contributor to the national economy, but also has an international protfile. Groningen has a huge employment base, many business opportunities and a wellknown knowledge position related to energy.

Groningen wants to be a more sustainable city, which means that during the coming years an energy transition will be required. Local policy on sustainability focuses on decreasing the use of energy across the board and increasing the production of green energy. Many new sustainable ideas need to be developed, and new businesses will emerge. With its large and educated young student population and its universities which

are trendsetters in energy research and education, Groningen possesses great potential for new energy innovations. By combing the power of energy education, the energy business and the interests of young people, our city is literally bursting with energy.

Based on all this, I most definitely understand why an NRG Battle is being organised in Groningen for the third time. I wish the contestants an energetic and innovative competition!

Learn about the NRG battle through experience The battle was a real nice and exciting experience. It was a great challenge and an opportunity to use one’s knowledge and experience to solve many problems. The pleasant aspect of the battle is that you are working on a case with other motivated and talented students. With all this knowledge you are bound to acquire an insight so as to solve any unforeseeable problem along the way.

I strongly believe that the gathering of so many talented people, is the real key to solve any problem. One useful advice is to always think outside of the box. It will help to make your own team stronger and more coherent.

I have learned that we could really make our contribution to the companies involved and benefit the sociality as a whole. This would raise the awareness and empower people to reduce the waste of energy and think

about chain reaction in the eco systems.

One aspect that will most likely always remain a problem of engineers, is that we are beta types and we have to think like an Ismaêl Drenth along with his winning team members alpha type. This paradigm of thinking is a prevailing obstacle in engineering science. will allow me to achieve prospective breakthroughs in my area of expertise.

Discovering New Energy The terms Eemshaven and Groningen Seaports have become virtually synonymous. But there is more to us than that. Groningen Seaports manages and commercially operates 2600 hectares in the port of Delfzijl, Eemshaven itself and the adjoining industrial sites. We are the landlord and service provider of leading players in the international energy and chemicals sector, the offshore wind industry, data storage and numerous other sectors.

Our ports are brimming over with energy. At the same time they are situated at one of Europe’s most important wetland regions with World Heritage status: the Wadden Sea. After all, the earth contains enough fossil energy resources for centuries and the sun sends mankind every day much more energy than it will ever use on that day and for many billions of years to come. Moreover solar energy is a free for all.

So what’s the problem? Not one, but many. The world population will grow from 6.3 billion now to about 9.5 billion in 2050. The economies of several large countries like Brazil, China and India are rapidly developing and expanding and so is their energy use. Fossil resources may still be plentyful but easily accessible oil and gas reserves are dwindling fast. Their exploration and use result in rising global atmospheric CO2 levels and other adverse local environmental impacts. Solar energy is free and plentiful but also very dilute and aonly intermittently available. Therefore

we urgently need to think about a transition to new energy systems.

Building and installing solar cells and windmills and using biofuels like bioethanol is fine but it is only a beginning and it is not enough.

We need to be much smarter and innovative in researching, designing, developing and installing genuinely sustainable and affordable energy systems. And who else but a skilled and highly motivated young professional with the right background is better able to respond to the many challenges associated with the transition to

Building Strategic Human Capital The International NRG Battle Shortage of talent in the competitive gas and oil industry has become a critical business issue. In the Netherlands, the company StudentsMedia initiated the International NRG Battle as an innovative event for attracting and retaining talent and innovating for the energy business. The International NRG Battle started off as an experiment in 2009 and in two years has become the most successful annual returning event in the Netherlands for attracting talent for the energy sector, with its own NRG magazine and broadcasted on National Geographic.

Online selection in the pool

The student teams battle for the best ideas and solutions. At the end of the day all the teams pitch their idea to an expert jury, who select the most innovative ideas, based on three criteria for American patent; novelty, utility and non-obvious of character. These teams will go to the finals at the end of the year.

During the Battle the companies meet and work with the students of their interest. They assess and recruit them directly. After the Battle the teams and experts of the companies meet to improve the ideas and implement Energy Talent them. Some companies choose strategic issues and ask the students to work out a part of the solution with the help of experts and innovation is boosted.

There are students who are wanted by many companies.

These most wanted students can pick their own company or project of interest and get an honorable reference and rise in ranking in the Energy pool.

StudentsMedia has got an online Energy Talent pool. In this Talent pool international master and bachelor graduates (for example: finance, technique, commercial, energy) that live in the Netherlands, sign up if they are interested in working in the energy sector.

The students are tested online on their personality type and four types of IQ. With these tests we know exactly what their potential is (for example: leadership, management, innovators, strategic, entrepreneurial, excellent talent), besides their knowledge and experience which is outlined in their resumĂŠ. The online Energy pool of students is unlocked for all the companies that participate in the NRG Battle. Companies select and contact the talents they need for their case directly and online.

In the NRG Battle companies meet, compete and innovate with student teams they have selected themselves. The companies send a case instructor and young professional to help the student teams and present an actual energy issue.

Personality structure winning teams We discovered that innovative (winning) teams have a certain type of personality structure. In 2011 StudentsMedia will research the structure of winning teams. With the results of this research, we expect to be able to predict which teams will come up with winning solutions and boost innovation. All based on their personality type and structure in teams. This will be interesting for recruiting top teams for innovation in the energy sector worldwide.

The energy sector is changing so rapidly that today’s daydream can be tomorrow’s reality. We’ve seen this pattern time and again: there is much we can do today which, just a few years ago, seemed only a dream. Electric cars, tidal power stations, the reuse of CO2, manure digesters that produce green electricity and heat, micro-CHP technology in high-efficiency boilers, the use of geothermal energy in the horticulture and greenhouse agriculture sectors, biogas-powered buses – amazing and sustainable developments

that are now reality. And there’s more to come.

There is a high degree of innovation in the energy sector, thanks in part to active and inspired teamwork that brings together partners from the energy world, scientists and others with the courage to think outside the box, the courage to dream.

The NRG Battle shows how entrepreneurship and innovation come together in practice. I applaud the idea of introducing young talent to the energy market early on. It’s not just final-year university students who benefit from this competition: the

energy companies themselves get a lot out of it: fresh and innovative ideas, which – ideally – can be put into action.

I certainly hope so.

Joris Putman presents the NRG Battle 2011 Joris Putman became known as an actor by his part as Morris in the TV-soap Goede Tijden Slechte TIjden. Today he produces television himself; his company Green Dream Productions, together with Tuvalu Media, produces the self created inventers competition “Green Dream District” on the National Geographic Channel. Joris is ambassador of the GasTerra Transition Prize of the year for the second year running and this year he also presents the NRG Battle 2011 “Students are the decision-makers and scientists of tomorrow. It is important to stimulate their conscience about the theme ‘energy transition’ and to make them invest in it. The fresh outlook that students have, can be of enormous surplus value for companies.

It can help them to find smart solutions for the transition of fossil fuels to durable energy. I support GasTerra’s policy to carry strong, substantial initiatives. With these initiatives they facilitate innovation, creativity, transfer of knowledge and consciousnessraising. Therefore, I am very honored that I may present the NRG Battle 2011 Besides that, it’s just super-cool to see what kind of special plans the

teams will present this year, because I am to visit them with the camera!”

NRG Battle 2011 Follow the teams on the internet and on television.

Again, this year the competition between companies and their students, starts with the NRG BATTLE 2011.

Different teams, consisting of students and companies, work for a year at a solution for an energy related problem. In three preliminaries, in March, June and October, fifteen

teams are chosen who will compete against each other in the final on November 23rd, during the Energy Delta Convention. The winner of the Energy Transition Award will also be chosen here.

A camera team from Green Dream Productions will make progressreports of the selected teams. The films will show how the different teams work on their specific energy problem, but most of all how they contribute to the theme ‘from dreams to reality’. The progress-reports can be seen on the website www.nrgbattle.nl and will be presented by Joris Putman.

But the cooperation between the NRG BATTLE 2011 and Green Dream Productions goes on. The Energy Transition Award winning team gets attention on television. The program ‘Green Dream District’ on the National Geographic Channel will present the winning team and it’s solution for the energy problem in a short report on television. In that way, the consciousness-raising about the energy problem will reach a bigger audience and can inspire more people to think about energy transition....and the winners will be in the spotlight.

Subsea electricity ‘COBRA’ cable between Denmark - Netherlands Another step towards more sustainable energy Grontmij is working for TenneT to obtain the permits for the construction of a subsea electricity cable between Denmark and the Netherlands, also known as the ‘COBRA’ cable. Construction of this cable is yet another step towards an integrated European electricity market.

The goal is to make renewable energy more and more available in Europe,

and especially to fit wind power into the Dutch and Danish power grids.

Denmark regularly has a surplus of wind energy which through this sub sea electricity cable can now be made available to other European countries. Grontmij provides the total offshore permits for Germany and the Netherlands, with related studies including an environmental impact report.

Designing a power station cheaper than coal Researching ultra deep geothermal energy Grontmij is involved in a study into the generation of electricity using ultra deep geothermal energy from a depth of between six and ten kilometres. This form of green electricity is expected to be cheap and in the future could supply 30 to 50 percent of the Netherlands’ electricity requirements.

Calculations have shown that electricity generated from ultra deep geothermal energy can compete with electricity generated from coal. At this depth, the temperature is not only higher, but the conversion efficiency from heat to electricity is also far greater.

Geothermal energy is a clean power source which, unlike wind and solar energy, is available irrespective of wind or light conditions. The technology can be deployed on a large scale, and ties in with the trend for localized power generation. Deep geothermal energy can meet half of all the electricity demand in the Netherlands by the year 2050, making it an essential technology in the transition to sustainable energy generation.

Designing and building the most energy efficient building in the world The Wuhan New Energy Centre, China Grontmij, in collaboration with Soeters Van Eldonk architects, has won an international design competition to become lead designer for the Wuhan New Energy Centre.

The centre is a research institute in the field of new energy sources and sustainability in Wuhan, China. The project

consists of the design of an office building, laboratories and congress centre. On completion the innovative building, the Wuhan Energy Flower, is expected to meet the BREEAM bespoke ‘Outstanding’ accreditation in the BRE’s International classification and as such will be one of the most sustainable office buildings in the world.

Waste power plants

Adriaan Visser, CEO of SITA Benelux and Germany:

“ We extract maximum energy from waste”

SITA opened a modern waste power plant in Coevorden in Drenthe, in 2008. This plant produces 46 megawatts per annum, which can provide more than 130,000 households with electricity each year. SITA is currently working hard at construction of a second plant in Roosendaal, which will generate 32 megawatts. “ These are relatively large plants with a high energy yield. Our waste power plants convert non-recyclable waste into sustainable energy.

The power plants have a yield of 30 percent, versus only 20 percent in older plants. And so we extract maximum energy from waste”, explains Visser. The new waste power plant in Roosendaal (ReEnergy BAVIRO) will generate 275,000 MWh of electricity annually from 2011 on, which is sufficient to supply 70,000 households with electricity.

Besides this electricity, ReEnergy BAVIRO will also supply heat to a nearby greenhouse complex, thus saving more than 3.5 million m3 of natural gas each year. Furthermore, the new Stadsoevers residential neighbourhood to be built in Roosendaal will be heated using merely the residual heat of this new waste power plant.

Visser is delighted to be able to generate more and more energy from waste. “ Of course the most sustainable option is to prevent waste from occurring to start with. Take construction companies, for example, an important group of SITA clients. We help them prevent usable building materials being disposed of at building sites. And so we think along with our clients to close the chain and to render more and more materials suitable for reuse” says Visser.

Unwanted mobile phones

SITA, which is part of the French multinational SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT, is a major player on the Dutch waste market. “We collect waste, recycle it and use it to produce new raw materials. Any waste flows no longer suitable for recycling are converted into sustainable energy”, says Adriaan Visser, CEO of SITA Benelux and Germany.

By reusing and recycling waste, we reduce CO2 emissions and relieve the burden on primary raw materials and fuels. Residual waste is also rendered useful, however. During its combustion, sustainable energy is produced. Waste to Energy.

“ We now recycle 80% of the waste materials we collect.

That is a healthy figure in itself, but not enough for us. Take unwanted mobile phones, for example. They contain 30 times more gold than the ore from which gold is won. Using the correct technology, it may be viable to extract the gold from the phones and reuse it for the latest generation of smart phones”, according to the CEO of SITA. “ Another example is the recycling of car parts. We do so in France, together with Renault. We're also working more closely with producers of packaging materials nowadays.”

“SITA gives waste a new lease of life, as a raw material or as energy. And so we contribute to a more sustainable world in which we emit less CO2”, says Visser. “ I'd like to wish all participants in the NRG Battle the best of luck in realising their own contribution.”

In the coming decades, it will all be about security of supply, diversification and preservation of our energy provision. Oil will become less dominant, but will still play the leading role in the coming decades. Coal will become more important, due to its security of supply. More gas is coming from abroad. Wind and solar energy are gradually gaining in importance. CCS is necessary to bridge the period until we have a sustainable supply of energy. National grids will be linked to each other. The importance of biomass is increasing, in the form of supplementary heating in power

plants, but also as a replacement for oil as primary feedstock for the chemical industry.

The Netherlands is currently an important international player in the energy sector and in the chemical industry. Both sectors will change drastically in the coming years. If we want to retain this important position, we must conduct a consistent policy and invest in R&D and production facilities in the period ahead. That calls for a coordinated approach on the part of government authorities, universities, knowledge institutes and the business sector.

Optimale oplossing Knubben benadrukt het belang van een integrale aanpak. “Ons uitgangspunt is altijd dat we zoeken naar de meest optimale oplossing, ook voor de lange termijn.Van daaruit bekijken we wat we zelf kunnen en welke specialisten nodig zijn, eventueel binnen TBI, het vastgoed-, bouw- en techniekconcern waar we deel van uitmaken. Een goed voorbeeld is de nieuwbouw van Martiniziekenhuis in Groningen. Toekomst De voortdurende veranderingen in de wereld van de energie zijn volgens Knubben nog lang niet voorbij.

“Er zal nog meer gekeken worden naar specifieke behoeften en welke integrale oplossingen daarbij horen. Ik verwacht dat er steeds meer lokale energiesystemen zullen komen en dat die netwerken gaan vormen. De lokale systemen voorzien zo optimaal mogelijk in de eigen behoefte en kunnen ook energie leveren aan andere gebruikers. Wij kunnen dat soort systemen ontwerpen, bouwen, onderhouden en exploiteren.”

NRG Battle 2011 Een belangrijke reden voor Wolter & Dros om de NRG Battle 2011 te ondersteunen is dat ze het initiatief een warm hart toedragen. “We willen studenten graag laten weten hoe wij nadenken over oplossingen en hoe creatief en innovatief we zijn. Rotterdam is the European Energy port in every respect Oil and coal form the basis for an unparalleled cluster. But plenty of attention is also paid to new sources of energy - LNG and biomass – in the port. The Port of Rotterdam Authority aspires to provide even more opportunities for businesses. In this connection plenty of extra space and facilities are being created. At the same time, Rotterdam takes the lead when it comes to reducing CO2 emissions.

Superior oil and coal cluster For decades now, Rotterdam has been the European hub for incoming and outgoing trade in crude oil, oil products and coal. Even the very largest tankers and bulk carriers can sail in and out of the port unhindered 24 hours a day. Specialised terminals guarantee the efficient transfer of cargo. Onward transport across the European market is clean and safe, via pipeline, inland shipping and rail.

New energy European demand for natural gas is increasing fast. Imports and exports come together in the Netherlands. Rotterdam’s port business community is

even among the bulk consumers. In response to these developments, the first LNG terminal (LNG = Liquid Natural Gas) will be opening in Rotterdam in 2011.

In addition to natural gas, Rotterdam wants to attract other new, clean sources of energy to the port. Biomass is the main exponent here. Recently, Europe made it obligatory for petrol and diesel products to be mixed with biofuels such as bioethanol and biodiesel. Other forms of biomass (wood chippings and the like) are an attractive supplementary fuel for coal-fired power plants. A substantial number of companies in the port are already investing in transshipment and production capacity for biofuels.

This often takes the form of co-siting, linking up with existing cargo terminals.

Sustainable development comes first The future belongs only to a clean, sustainable port. The Port of Rotterdam Authority is leading the way when it comes to developing initiatives to enable companies to operate as energy-efficiently as possible, to make fossil energy ‘cleaner’, to tap into new sources of energy and drastically limit emissions of CO2. The Port Authority is involved intensively with research and pilots for the underground storage of CO2. Rotterdam is hoping for a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2025.

Realising Results We are facing a global transition to a different energy economy and major cities play a crucial role. Amsterdam sees urgency and opportunities and decided on a challenging energy strategy. The council cannot achieve this on its own; this is a project of the city – of businesses, institutions, the people of Amsterdam.

In order to support the transition, the city council made a (revolving) investment fund of maximum 60 million Euro available for the coming years, which will produce a multitude of investments.

The city benefits! It provides new investments and new jobs; it changes our thinking on design, urban development and town planning; businesses and knowledge institutions develop new services and products and gather knowledge; and we keep the energy costs for the people of Amsterdam affordable in the long term.

A few examples of what is happening.

On the production side of electricity we ensure that the local capacity for wind energy increases. From a capacity of 67 MW, we start by developing towards a capacity of 177 MW from 2016. In that year the sites must be ready for tender.There are many Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage projects planned. In terms of solar energy, the city is creating conditions for a large-scale roll out as soon as possible. Furthermore, together with Liander we are experimenting

with smart grids and intelligent meters.

An ICT city like Amsterdam – fibre optic network and Internet hub – has everything required.

Amsterdam has a major district heating network. Together with Nuon the city is working towards 100,000 connected housing equivalents in 2025 and 200,000 in 2040. In first instance we use the residual heat efficiently, as soon as necessary there are options to make it more sustainable (geothermal).

The tender produced four winners who will construct climate-neutral, sustainable and simply wonderful buildings. Sustainability is used increasingly often as an important criterion in selection procedures.

Fortuyn observes that the energy sector is ready for a paradigm shift.“In the past generation followed demand, but now demand is starting to follow generation, because energy sources are becoming more sustainable.We are increasingly making use of natural sources, such as wind and sun, but these sources have the unfortunate habit of not always being able to supply energy at the time of use.When there is little wind or sunlight, less energy is produced, which means that we need to adjust demand to generation.”

E-mobility “The storage capacity of batteries in electric cars is a good example”, continues Fortuyn.“In 2020 we expect to have approximately 1 million electric cars driving around the Netherlands. If they were to be linked to the grid through the battery, you would create an enormous storage capacity. As long as the car is not used, the grid can use the battery as a buffer.At times when generation is lagging behind demand, the battery can provide energy at a relatively high price.When generation increases, the battery can purchase energy at a lower price.This means you could create a situation where you park your car at the airport, go on holiday for a week and learn that you do not have to pay on your return but that you actually earned money.”

Important role for Siemens Fortuyn recognises that quite a few things need to happen before that day arrives.“At the moment we do not have a charging infrastructure for e-mobility, the IT infrastructure that supports it or even the electric cars themselves.The most important bottleneck remains the battery storage capacity.

On the one hand this requires technical developments, but on the other we simply need to create them. Siemens can play an important role in several areas. In the car we supply electromotors and the storage media. Outside the car we contribute to developing the charging infrastructure.”

I can only recommend young people to find their way in this super fascinating profession.”

Test your energy scenario with the Energy Transition Model Taking up the position of a policy maker; who wouldn’t want to do that?

You can by using the Energy Transition Model (ETM). With one push on the button you can see the contribution of more or less wind energy, solar panels, or low-energy bulbs in practice. According to GasTerra this is an ideal online calculation model, not only to devise an idea but to test it in ‘practice’. During the International NRG Battle students will use the ETM in order to produce innovative solutions and to substantiate them.

The world is facing complex issues in terms of energy. The demand for energy has risen over the years, whilst fossil fuels, such as oil, gas and coal, will be exhausted in due course. To ensure that enough energy remains available, opportunities in terms of energy savings, sustainable energy production and more efficient types of transport are considered.Young people can play an important role in this process; they are the energy consumers of the future after all.

In order to see the effect of certain energy choices, Quintel has developed the online ETM, www. energietransitiemodel.nl. For example, if all energy is generated with wind, how much land or sea surface area would be required?

What would that mean for transport?

And not unimportantly, what savings would this produce? The ETM clearly demonstrates the effects of changes in the supply and demand of energy.

GasTerra sketched four scenarios for the years 2020, 2030, 2040 and 2050, which are based on changes in energy demand, energy costs and supply and the use of renewable energy sources and fossil fuels. By developing a scenario on the website, these future explorations can be used as a reference.

In the coming year, the ETM will also be used during the International NRG Battle. Students frequently produce innovative solutions for energy issues, but an idea is often not enough, it must be practicable too. The Energy Transition Model gives participating students the opportunity to test and substantiate their ideas. As principal sponsor, GasTerra is closely involved with expanding and refining this model.

Together with Hanzehogeschool in Groningen, the ETM will be made suitable for higher professional education during 2011.

NRG Battle The International NRG Battle is a yearly recurring event.

During a whole year there are preliminary rounds held nationwide. Each annual edition will end with a final on the Energy Delta Convention. There are three NRG Battle rounds in 2011:

Round 1: 4th of March, Groningen Round 2: 10th of June, Rotterdam Round 3: 7th of October, Groningen The NRG Battle is a great opportunity for students to meet with big names in the industry and work with students from various backgrounds on important energy issues. These issues have been provided in the form of a case by (inter) national leading energy companies.

At the end of the day each team will present their solution to a jury, comprised of CEO’s of renowned companies such as Siemens and GasTerra. This jury will select - based on three criteria; utility, non-obvious character and novelty - five winning teams. These teams go to the final at the end of the year and win a broadcast of their idea on National Geographic Channel.

Health Battle The Health Battle is a yearly recurring event. The finals of the Health Battle 2010 will take place on March 16th, during the Health Valley Event in Nijmegen. All the finalists will present their idea and what they have achieved in a final pitch.

The finals will be presented by Beau van Erven Dorens.

The prize will be presented by Maxime Verhagen Minister of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation. An expert jury will decide which team will win the Health Innovation Award.
