Villa Aahana
EDITORIAL. The one thing nature teaches us is that life goes on. The passing of years and decades, all the things and people who touch our lives and then leave, teaches us that life simply goes on. We must learn to move with it or rather move on. Take your past and treasure them in your heart. And more importantly, thank them for making you who you are today. In this issue, we meet with charming and wonderful Hari Bansa Archarya and his kind and beautiful wife Ramila Pathak, both of whom share a common grief - the loss of their previous spouse. Like the saying, “the flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all,” this couple have found a place for themselves in each other, although that place stemmed from the misfortunes and sorrows of their past. But immediately after you meet them, you know that something beautiful is flowering. Our Home section this month features a lot of amazing new ideas for your home and interiors. One major feature is the rich and lavish Villa Aahana, home to Paras Shakya and Megha Chaudhary Shakya, which they named after their daughter Aahana. Luxurious, spacious, meticulously planned and well executed, this house embodies the complete integration of modern lifestyle, art and practicality. We will also be regularly rolling out different cars for a spin, bringing you unbiased reviews of the latest automobiles in town. This time, we’ve reviewed the new Mahindra e2o Sportz, a feature-rich and futuristic electric vehicle. Please read it and let us know if we were able to convince you to drive one back home.

26 SMART FAMILY JUNE 2017
“The way she has handled me and my family is the best thing that she has done for me and nothing can compare to that.”
Firstly, we live in a world that is far from perfect. People sometimes die young, leaving behind grieving spouses with potentially long lives ahead of them. Second marriage following the death of one’s spouse poses many challenges. These challenges and unease can affect one’s ability to remarry even years after the death of the spouse. Second marriage itself is a daunting mission, but when one marries someone who has lost the first spouse, it can also be fraught with issues, emotions and real life problems. It is not easy to share your spouse’s heart with another person, but in a marriage to a widow or widower that is certainly what you must learn to live with. A marriage to a widow or widower is not all about their grief and sneaking mildly around it. Your feelings matter and they deserve authentication, no matter how insensitive and unrealistic the outside world may find them. There are few tragedies that can compare to the loss of a spouse. Though the pain and grief of losing one’s partner may be unimaginable, life must unavoidably continue. Here we present to you a living example. Hari Bansha Acharya and his second wife Ramila Pathak both had strength to continue life after the loss of their respective spouses, and are now serving as an inspiration to all of us. With this marriage, both Hari Bansha and Ramila have set an example in society. Hari Bansha Acharya, one of the most noted comedians, is no new name in Nepali household. He, along with his comedy partner Madan Krishna Shrestha has been entertaining all of us along with his comedy duo for many decades now.

Cover Story
“We decided to get married, but the day when I had to step out of my house to marry for the second time, was the most difficult step of my life.” AMIDST A LOVELY COUPLE MOMENT Who is more romantic and why?
Hari Bansha: In any relationship both the husband and the wife are romantic but what I feel is that guys are more expressive whereas ladies are quite reluctant to showcase their romance. So in that case, I am more romantic.
Does he help you with your household chores?
Ramila Pathak: He helps me wholeheartedly in my household chores. I quite often keep fasting, during such times he himself goes to kitchen and prepares food for me. Not just that, if there is any functions or guests at our place, he supports and helps me completely.
What is the best thing that your spouse has ever done for you? Hari Bansha: The way she has handled me and my family is the best thing that she has done for me and nothing can compare to that.
Ramila Pathak: I too would say the same. The way he understands me, the way he loves my son as his own son is the best thing that he has done for me. He has given me more than what I had expected.
What it is like to be a wife of a veteran actor and comedian? Ramila Pathak: I consider myself very privileged to be a wife of such a huge name. I am fortunate enough to be a wife of such family oriented man who is very loving and responsible. I try my level best to not hamper his image in any way. The way people treat me and respect me for being his wife make me feel that I too have achieved something.
Share us with your happiest moment so far as a couple.
Ramila Pathak: Our younger son Mohit is getting married real soon, so we both -- including everyone else -- are very happy and excited about that. We have started shopping and arranging things for his big day. Hari Bansha: It also is the happiest moment because this was something that was handed over to me by Mohit’s mother, and we are doing our best to fulfill her dream and hope this makes her divine soul happy.
Tell us the secret for happy and successful marriage.
Hari Bansha: I think the secret to happy and successful marriage is discipline.
28 SMART FAMILY JUNE 2017
He got married to Meera Acharya who was an anchor at Radio Nepal. But their marital relation came to an end after Meera passed away while undergoing treatment in 2011. The separation greatly affected his life and his two sons and sisters were worried for him. That was when they asked him to marry for the second time. He got married to Ramila Pathak one and a half year after Meera’s demise. Here, they have shared with us their life after the wedding.
Most Difficult Step of Life
There is no building up of the family without the building up of marriage. The husband and wife relationship is the primary relationship in the family. Hari Bansha Acharya too believes in the institution of marriage. According to him, the wife is a pillar of the family. Without the existence of wife, no family can stand strong and I too agree to that. He says Ramila’s presence in his life has come as a bliss and finds himself very fortunate to have such life partner. He further adds, “The wife is a back support for any husband. But after Meera’s demise I lost my back support. Everyone close to me asked me to marry again. I too was not being able to live alone. But I wanted someone who had gone through similar situation, so that we could understand each other well. During one of our shoots Basundhara (Bhusal) didi talked to me about Ramila and introduced me to her. We decided to get married, but the day when I had to step out of my house to marry for the second time, was the most difficult step of my life. But after marrying Ramila, it has been good in every way.”
Destined Marriage
Hari Bansha Acharya and Ramila Pathak’s marriage has always been very intriguing. Except for this couple, nobody knows exactly how it happened, but we surely know that these two love each other to infinity and beyond. Hari Bansha and Ramila’s marriage was destined. As they say marriages are made in heaven, maybe their marriage too was made in heaven, although it was there second marriage. These two persona make a beautiful couple, believe me. They both complement each other magnificently. The stomach tickling comedy of Hari Bansha and the glorifying beauty of Ramila blend so well that no one can say that it is their second marriage. Regarding this I asked her, how difficult it was to adjust in the new family. Here is what she has to say, “It was not that difficult. Not a Bit of Partiality from Her
When you marry someone with children, everyone talks about the built–in family. What they do not mention is the fact that it comes with an array of challenges. Chances are that the road to having good relationship with your step children will be paved with a few minefields. Let us see what he has to say about it: “Our relationship is very sensitive. Before getting married to her, I was worried for my sons as I had this doubt in my mind: what if she does not look after my sons? What if she is the reason behind the conflict between me and my sons? But there is not even a pinch of partiality from her side. We both understand each other very well as we both had a distinct family prior to getting married to each other. I have two sons, she too has her son, and our children too have understood our relation so well that there is no room for complaint or any issues as such.”

PARENTING. Show You Care Ramila Katuwal
A psychotherapist famously said, “We need four hugs a day for survival. We need eight hugs a day for maintenance. We need twelve hugs a day for growth.” We all agree that a “hug” from your loved one is all you need to spark up your mood when you are stressed. The reason why everyone, irrespective of age, loves a hug is because it makes the person, both the giver and the taker, feel fresh and alive again. This is also true in case of children, but many of us are not that forthcoming when it comes to hugging our children simply because we are unaware of its benefits. The following are the reasons to hug your child more often: • Hugging enhance cognitive growth and development in your child’s brain. • A big warm hug can reduce pain and fear, soothe hurt emotion, increases feeling of safety, fight fatigue, and boost immune system. • It regulates emotions, and makes children happier as well as healthier. • It increases mutual trust, and thereby helps them experience a crucial part of their life, i.e. childhood, in a fulfilling way. • It improves parent-child bonding, much like a kangaroo that is perpetually hugging its baby in the pouch. • A quick hug is enough to boost your child’s mood; and as a result, he will be more willing to learn something new in a very short span of time. A parent should never be so busy that she is not even able to give a hug to her child. With so much to gain in terms of emotional and physical, you should ask yourself daily, “Did I forget to hug my child?” Just call your bundle of joy, and hug her like there will not be tomorrow. 30 SMART FAMILY JUNE 2017

Introduction to Drugs in My Life
Self Rehabilitation With a long hair and piercings in his facial area, Sarad Shrestha is not the ideal role model parents would want for their children. But at the same time, we've been taught not to judge a book by its cover. Rubik Joshi
A well known figure in the rock and roll music industry, Sarad Shrestha has been involved in the field of music for more than a decade now. Currently working on a new project with his band "Tumbleweed Inc," he has had a promising career as a musician. Drugs are sometimes associated with the rock and roll music industry, and conquering a drug addiction is difficult and challenging experience. Mr. Sarad has been an inspirational figure to those who seek to get their life back on track after falling into the addiction trap. We discussed over a cup of coffee his story on he overcame his drug addiction. 32 SMART FAMILY JUNE 2017
It started out in an early age. It was right after my SLC examinations, and I was 16 years old when I started taking drugs. As a young kid I was unaware of its consequences. A victim of peer pressure, I was a stranger to drugs and the effects of it. I didn't have the knowledge about the aftermath of taking drugs and unknowingly I became addicted to it. The addiction started to take its effect on me. I used to be a job holder as well at that time. I was handling a business that I was told to take care of by my brother. Due to the addiction, I had a hard time handling the administrative tasks. In terms of my musical career, I used to play for the "Axe Band" back then. We had to cancel a couple of tours due to my problems. I lost many opportunities and my family started to lose their trust towards me. This damaged me personally in many ways.
Journey to Rehabilitation
'Addiction is a disease' was the first thing I realized after my rehabilitation. I've been to the rehab for about three times in my life. Visiting the rehab was a transformational and an educational phase for me. When I visited the rehabilitation center for the first time, I wasn't aware about the procedures. In those days, the treatment methods were a bit harsh as the patients were punished and scolded. Such kind of rigid and crude methods were referred to as Total Control (TC) therapy. But, I think now the treatment methods have changed. Once I got acclimatized to the environment, I started enjoying the activities that used take place in the rehab. My first visit for rehabilitation wasn't actually in a rehab center. It was called the process of detoxification since there weren't any rehab centers here in Nepal back then. It was during 1994, and I had to visit the psychiatric ward at the Teaching Hospital. My visits to the rehab were an insightful experience as I got to hear the stories of other people suffering from the same cause. I could reflect their own stories upon
When you consume drugs you develop a fake identity of yourself, forming a veil over your originality. Careers and relationships are hampered on the way
my problems and there were classes that took place as well. There, I learned about the harmful effects of consuming drugs, and I was actually shocked and surprised to know these things. But, one visit to the rehab wasn't enough. I went to Richmond Fellowship Nepal in 2006: then I visited a 10-day session conducted by Youth Vision Nepal (this was my last visit). There was another thing that I realized during my visit to the rehab. Addiction or drug abuse can sprout from your own home sometimes. Being from a Newari family, I think our community gives easy access of alcohol to people. Alcohol itself can be considered as a dangerous drug.
Success after a Long Uphill Battle
It's been about a year since I've been living in Total Sobriety - no drugs, no weed, no alcohol. The experiences that I went through during those rehab visits brought a change within me. I've had an on and off relationship with drugs in the past and I guess, in the end, it all depends on one's own behavior.
Visiting a rehab is not enough to cure your addiction. It's about how you take in the experience and implement it. I felt a spiritual awakening within myself that led me to live a clean life that must come along with my ageing as well. Ever since I have been clean, I feel happy from deep within. It's good to live your life in a conscious state..
Don’t do Drugs
Always stay out of drugs. People have the notion of taking drugs for the sake of having fun which is absolutely absurd. Once you get habituated to it, it's hard to get rid of it. When you consume drugs you develop a fake identity of yourself, forming a veil over your originality. Careers and relationships are hampered on the way. So, my request to everyone is to avoid it. Even if you have already started consuming it, always look for help. Don't hesitate in talking about it with your friends or family; do not feel shy about it. In our society, even parents feel uncomfortable sharing their children's drug problems with the fear of being judged by others. But, the times have changed and rather than hiding behind these problems it's better to share it instead. I always tried to cure myself despite failing to do so at times, hence the on and off relationship with my drug problem. I hang out with my friends who have recovered from this problem, losing few of them on the way as well. It's quite helpful when you get to share your thoughts with them since they can relate to them too. I'd suggest that rather than punishing your child or younger ones for taking drugs focus on helping them in getting rid of the addition. I even took part in a conference called the Asia Pacific NE Convention, a couple of months ago. I met people from the same circle, who went through the same struggles, which encouraged me to live a better life. I've got friends who are running rehabilitation centers right now and if anyone needs help regarding drug rehabilitation, they can contact me personally as well.

For Two or More The right recipe for raising siblings. Abhinav Das Shrestha
Prepping your child for the upcoming arrival of her sibling actually begins as soon as you find out about your second pregnancy. It is important to mentally prepare your elder child, and lay all the groundwork for her to be ready to accept the new addition to the family. Refer to the new baby as ‘our baby’ or ‘your sister/brother.’ This will encourage her to form a connection with the baby. Take her on your next visit to the gynecologist, and involve her in decisions such as picking names, and buying clothes and toys for the new baby. But one thing you’ll notice soon enough is that you can’t help but make comparisons - from who started to kick early, to who spoke the first word at what age. These comparisons later move on to other bigger aspects. Having siblings gives your children an opportunity to develop important socio-emotional skills such as cooperation, conflict management, and empathy. However, the processes that lead up to these benefits can often be frustrating and stressful for parents. All we really want is for them to grow up together, share mutual trust, and always support each other in times of need. But when misdirected, rivalry, jealousy, unhealthy competition, and fighting will creep into their relationship as they try to establish their own identity and place in the family. Comparing would do nothing more than add fuel to the fire. Children need to feel that they are treated with love and respect for who they are. Hence, it is very important for parents to refrain from comparing them. Let each child be who she is, and appreciate her individual talents and success. This allows for a healthy environment where children feel that the treatment meted out by their parents is fair. In the long run, when children feel that the love and attention they get from their parents are not in any way influenced by the actions of their siblings, they develop an attitude of cooperation rather than competition. When we see our children argue and fight, as parents we instinctively feel the urge to step in. But it's best not get involved unless there is a danger of physical harm. Let the children learn from these quarrels and arguments conflict management skills, and let them develop their relationship
with their siblings without undue external interference. Getting involved in minor fracas would only limit them from practicing these skills, and make them dependent on you to rescue them each time they are in similar situation, and discourages them from solving their own problems. Any parental intervention could raise the risk of creating other problems, such as parents appearing to be biased toward one child, which in turn result in more resentment and unwanted behavior. Remember, never yell, take sides, or favor one over another. Teach them to channelize their anger and frustration objectively instead of blaming and pointing fingers at each other. Teach them to take responsibility for their actions and reactions regardless of who is to be blamed. And always encourage a winwin negotiation where each child will gain something.

Often a teacher of opposite sex touches my back, supposedly as an innocent display of affection. It is not only me; he also touches other students. What he does not understand is that we do not feel comfortable. How do we stop him without hurting his feelings? (Student) Social touching such as a pat on the shoulder is something people do to
bond with other human beings. However, every individual has his or her preference as to what is comfortable and/or acceptable. Often, when such uncomfortable action is carried out by someone who is older than you or someone you trust and/or respect like a friend, older relative, or a teacher, it is only natural to feel confused about the intention of the action or to find a way to say it without offending the person in question. Your body is all yours and no one has the right to touch it unless it is ok with you. It does not matter if the other person’s intentions are positive or not or if the touch is as minor as holding hand. You and only you can decide what is appropriate for you. The rule of thumb is if you are uncomfortable, you have every right to say no. You may chose to either directly talk to the teacher respectfully making it clear that you are not comfortable with the touch or you can also talk to your school Principal or another teacher you trust. Alternatively, you can also tell you parents about it so they can help you to talk to the appropriate person.
I have a daughter. Lately her material demands are increasing dayby-day. I have tried not to give in to her unnecessary demands. But she throws tantrums, gives the impression that she is entitled, and we owe her everything. How do I deal with such situation without making it worse? (Parent)
This is a common problem among parents of this generation. We provide to the best of our ability for our children, fulfilling all their demands before they even realize they actually need something, raising a generation of children who feel entitled to everything including love. These children fail to understand a fundamental part about relationships that it is mutual and has to be earned. Sometimes we give-in and buy whatever they want because we use it as bribery and encouragement for performing as promised, or to somehow compensate for not being able to give enough time, or to buy their kids things that all their peers have so they ‘fit in’ with their peers. When your child makes a demand and you’ve patiently heard their reasons and you’ve decided to say no, here’s what you can do: Give your reason first. Know that ‘no’ means ‘no’ and not ‘maybe.’ If you are used to meeting your child’s demands or eventually agreeing after some tantrum, then this process is going to be very difficult initially. No matter how much they cry or argue, stick with your decision or you risk giving the idea that misbehaving is the way to get what they want. If you can, offer something else. For example if you are out looking for basketball shoes, ‘I can’t buy you this shoe because it is too expensive. But I can buy one of these instead.’ If your child agrees, acknowledge the child’s behavior and attitude. It also helps to avoid such situations by having a conversation before they occur. For instance, involve your child in creating a shopping list and agree on what to buy prior to going out. Have family meetings to discuss about budgeting, creating personal shopping list and approval process of the shopping items. Sometimes it may also help to delay by saying, ‘Ok, we can talk about it during …’ This works best if the ground rule has been set and agreed preferably during family meeting.

Sometimes my son asks answers to his homework questions from me, instead of searching for information or working out the problems by himself. I am beginning to feel that I am the one who is doing much of the work. How can I help my son help himself? (Parent)
Every child is different in terms of his/her strengths and weaknesses so there isn’t one size fits all kind of response to that. Knowing the needs of your child and the importance of assignment might help each parent to provide appropriate support to your child. The short term objective of assignment is often reinforcement of the daily lessons taught in school. The long term objective of an assignment is to teach organization skills such as time management and study skills. Next time your child asks you to help with an assignment, take a moment to identify if your child requires help with the concept taught or with the appropriate skills and management of resources to get the assignment and/or the project done. Let your child take lead when it comes to doing homework which starts all the way from getting his/her study materials out from the bag, checking when the assignments are due, and setting time for each assignment. Replace “Now do this assignment” with “What assignment do you have due tomorrow?” and “Don’t you have Math test this week?” If you think your child is having a difficult time grasping concepts taught in school and may need subject specific help, it may be worthwhile for the child to get additional help with understanding the concepts taught as some kids may learn better from someone else. That someone else may be you, a responsible older student or a tutor. Either way, inform the teacher about the difficulty your child has been facing with assignments. BODY. Well, summer’s here! It’s a great time to have some fun in the Sun. But all that fun also means sun exposures which take a toll on your skin. Although, sun is a great source of Vitamin D, the UV rays can also cause harmful skin reactions. The best way to avoid trouble is to slather on the sunscreen lotion. • Apply sunblock lotion at least 30 minutes before heading outdoors so your skin can fully absorb the lotion. • Reapply it every 2 hours. Don’t be under the false sense of security that your sunscreen will protect your skin all day long even if
they claim to be “water proof,” “sweat proof,” or provide “all day protection.” • Don’t save your sunblock lotion for sunny days. Apply sunblock lotion even on cloudy days since the UV rays can pass through the clouds.
Confused by the SPF Number?
Technically, SPF number indicates how long you can be in the sun without being sunburned. Your skin usually starts to burn after 10 minutes in the sun without protection. With SPF 30, you could be out in the sun for 300 minutes (5 hours) before you get sunburned, as long as you keep reapplying it. Remember, sunscreen lotions can only do so much. A funky umbrella, trendy sunglasses, stylish hat (or cap whatever you prefer), light cotton clothes might never hurt. Don’t let the Sun stop you from going out and having some fun.

How is it Different from other Massage Types?
All the massages I have tried till date have been different but wonderful which keeps me coming back for more. What I found unique about the Traditional Himalayan Massage is that the technique was light and contained simple upward gliding back strokes. That was followed by a relaxing thigh and calves massage which can be painful but you can always ask your masseuse to adjust the pressure as per your liking. If you are like me, and carry all your tiredness your shoulder and neck areas, the Traditional Himalayan Massage is the perfect remedy for you to loosen up and relax. This massage is very similar to Aroma therapy but it differs in the amount of essential oils used during the massage and of course the aromatic herbs are not used.

HOW NOT TO HAVE
ACCIDENTAL BABIES Emergency contraceptives, when used effectively, can prevent unwanted pregnancies but they should not be used as primary methods of family planning. Text by: Nischal Neupane, Illustration by: Sahaj Tamrakar
Emergency Accidents are inevitable. No matter how technologically advanced we have become or how Contraceptives in Nepal Prof. Dr. Chanda Karki, Obsterician complex our mathematical algorithms are, and & Gyanaecologist at B and B Hospital, no matter how meticulous and foolproof we are informed me about the two primary kinds of emergency contraceptives in our planning, accidents find a way to sneak available in the Nepalese market: through the most minute of cracks and turn our emergency pills, and Intra Uterine Copper Devices (IUDs). Emergency lives upside down. Take the Titanic for instance. pills like Econ pills, colloquially called 'morning after pills,' are available Or that Malaysian Airlines airplane we have in all pharmacies and are supposed not found yet. Accidents are the reason we have to be taken within 120 hours and preferably within 12 hours after parachutes, life boats, emergency exits, and fire unprotected sex. When taken within extinguishers. the prescribed time period, the pills Unwanted pregnancies are one of the accidents that fall within the sexual and reproductive domain. These pregnancies are pretty commonplace and usually happen because of unprotected sex, contraceptive failures, miscalculation of abstinence, failed withdrawal (eg: ejaculation in the vagina or on external genitalia). Then there are heinous crimes like rape or coerced sex that cause unwanted pregnancies. That is why we have emergency contraceptives, our parachutes for a safe landing.
44 SMART FAMILY JUNE 2017
What are Emergency Contraceptives?
The World Health Organization defines emergency or post-coital contraceptives as “methods of contraception that can be used to prevent pregnancy in the first five days after sexual intercourse. It is intended for use following unprotected intercourse, contraceptive failure or misuse (such as forgotten pills, or breakage or slippage of condoms), rape or coerced unprotected sex.”
prevent pregnancy by doing one of the three things: temporarily stopping the release of an egg from the ovary, preventing fertilization, or preventing a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus. Some doctors choose to prescribe a mix of well calculated dosages of other pre-coital contraceptives that need to be taken within 48 hours, but these are not to be taken without the prescription and proper dosage recommendation of a doctor.
Women who take these pills may be subjected to nausea or some vomiting afterwards, but Dr. Karki tells that

a shift in the existing attitude about sex and reproductive health is urgent and paramount, in homes and in educational institutions. these symptoms are normal after effects of orally ingested pills. These pills can also change the length of the users' monthly menstrual cycle, making the next period come a bit earlier or later than usual. Some women also find that the hormones in the pills can cause unexpected bleeding, but that apparently is also a common and not a serious side effect. However, if the bleeding persists and the menstruation doesn't happen for a longer period of time, users should consult their doctors. The other available option comes in the form of copper-bearing Intrauterine Devices (IUDs). WHO recommends that a copper bearing IUD be inserted within five days of unprotected intercourse if it is being used as an emergency contraceptive. When done so, this method of emergency contraception is over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy and is the most effective form of emergency contraception available. Once inserted, copper IUDs works primarily by preventing sperm from fertilizing the egg. The copper released from the devices works as a spermicide and prohibits conception. The user can continue to use the IUD as an ongoing method of contraception and may choose to change to another contraceptive method in the future. This kind of contraception ‘should not’ used if the woman is already pregnant. The relevance of these emergency methods of contraception can't be understated in a country like Nepal. Our country has the highest maternal death rate among all SAARC countries and half of these maternal death rates are due to unsafe abortions (National Demographic Health Survey, 2011). Children born out of unintended pregnancies are also at a greater risk of being born with low birth weight, dying in their first year of life, and not receiving 46 SMART FAMILY JUNE 2017
resources and care necessary for healthy development.
Issues with Emergency Contraceptives Emergency pills need to be taken within a certain time to be effective. Emergency pills like Econ need to be taken within 120 hours of unprotected sex. Two pills inside can be consumed at one or the second pill can be taken at an interval of 12 hours or 12 hours after the first pill. Side Effects: Some nausea, vomiting, headache and breast pain for a few days. Effectiveness: 99% (according to Econ website).
Intra Uterine Devices: IUDs need to be inserted within 5 days of unprotected sex and can be an effective family planning method. Side effects: Irregular menstrual periods and bleeding patterns, back pain, headache, nausea etc. 99%, according to WHO.
As good and effective these methods of contraception are, and as amazing they are in helping us during emergencies, Dr. Karki is concerned about the burgeoning misuse of these emergency contraception methods. People, mostly teenagers and young adults, have been using these contraceptives as their primary methods of contraception. Though there have been no studies that demonstrate any negative effects of sustained misuse of e-contraceptives, she points out that these contraceptives don't protect people from Sexually Transmitted Diseases, like gonorrhea, syphilis or HIV Aids, the way condoms do. Dr. Karki also voiced her worries about young adults who remain under the impression that these pills abort pregnancies. She is adamant that these emergency contraceptives, especially the pills, need to be used just during emergency situations, and not as methods of effective family planning methods. Dr. Karki believes that the education system and the taboo around the discussion of sexual and reproductive health are to be blamed for the misuse of these emergency contraceptives. She believes that a shift in the existing attitude about sex and reproductive health is urgent and paramount, in homes and in educational institutions. Dr Karki thinks that the government needs to focus on creating effective policies and interventions that inform the populace about proper family planning methods and serve to remove the stigma surrounding conversation about sex and reproductive health.

The chicken fillings have an exquisite taste with the juiciness of cucumbers and minutely cut vegetables which complement the dish perfectly. A fresh salad garnished with mayonnaise and olives served with crisp French fries dipped in sauce are perfect accessories to this dish. It is a perfect weave of taste and health, and undoubtedly tastes best in the company of an old friend. One of the best Grilled Chicken Pitas I have ever tasted is at Evoke Cafe & Bistro in Jhamsikhel, Lalitpur. Open form 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., it is a lovely place where you can stop for a healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner. Mr. Pranjal Gogoi, the head chef of the restaurant shared a few words with us regarding his passion for cooking; he also treated us with his two special dishes namely 'Australian Lamb Chops' and ' Wild Mushroom Risotto'. With an experience of a decade, Mr. Gogoi has had a decorated career as a chef so far. He has worked in various hotel across different continents, few of them being; The Jaypee Palace Hotel Agra, Lalit Udaipur Hotel, Fairfield by Marriott Indore, and he also was a chef in a cruise during his time in the States. His curiosity to know about the kitchen work led him to his passion for cooking. "To become a chef is a challenge. It's not just about cooking the food; you have to be able to create that wow factor for your guests. Hence, it is important to have the drive and the passion to prepare cuisines for your guest."
Australian Lamb Chops
Wild Mushroom Risotto
The lamb chops were served, with a crispy layer followed by a moist and juicy flesh, in a platter decorated with symmetrically turned potatoes, mint sauce, and the beetroot mousse. As you slice through the flesh, the portion where the flesh meets the bone is the most delicious part of the dish. A medium rare grilled lamb chop is the recommended version, if you are to try this dish on your visit to the restaurant.
Thick Italian risotto rice mixed with porcini mushrooms and onions; this dish is prepared in a slow process where the rice is heated in water for about 15-20 minutes in order to extract the starch to give out the thickness of the rice. An addition of butter along with a small amount of truffle oil is added to the dish in order to enhance the taste. The dish is then topped off with mascarpone cheese, parmesan cheese, and fresh basil pesto.

FINANCE Investment
An investment is the current commitment of an investment sum for a period of time in order to derive future payments that will compensate the investor for the time the funds are committed, the expected rate of inflation and uncertainty for future payments. The need for money varies on different stages of our life. Such as, the money needed for education is top notch priority in twenties while managing the fund for health care, gifting and spending takes higher importance after our sixties. So we need to plan well for meeting these future priorities. Your investment horizon as an investor can be divided into three phases in your life. In these phases, investors have different priority and investment horizon.
Portfolio Management
There is high risk if you invest in an individual security as the return changes in value of the security. This is analogous to keeping all your eggs in the same basket. For example: If you invest all the money in securities of banking industry, any adverse outcome of the overall industry can hamper your investment. Alternatively, if you invest forming portfolio of securities in different sectors, any loss incurred from inefficiency of an industry can be compensated by the gain you make from another sector. Therefore, portfolio management helps you in maximizing the total return with risk diversification. Portfolio management presents the best investment plan to you as per your income, budget, age and ability to undertake risks. It minimizes the risks involved in investing and also increases your chance of making profits and enables your portfolio managers to provide customized investment solutions to you as per your needs and requirements. Portfolio Managers understand your financial needs and suggest the best and unique investment policy for you with minimum risks involved. You can benefit colossally with portfolio management with high value return provided it is performed on regular basis and implemented appropriately. Portfolio management provides you various advantages that generally include: • Maximizing overall returns • Balancing the risks posed by projects • Optimizing allocation of resources

You can benefit colossally with portfolio management with high value return provided it is performed on regular basis and implemented appropriately
Although you as an investor attempt to create a portfolio yielding the desired return at the lowest possible risk, your effort might often go in vain due to frequent fluctuations in the stock market. Not using an appropriate method for portfolio formation and analysis, you are often found to be exposed to greater risk. Therefore, the role of Investment Bankers has become inevitable in dealing with this that shall help you generate maximum return Most of the licensed Merchant Banker in Nepal is found to be offering Portfolio Administration and Portfolio Management Services under two broad categories: Discretionary Portfolio Management Services and NonDiscretionary Portfolio Management Services.
Discretionary Portfolio Management Service
Non-Discretionary Portfolio Management Service
independently manages your funds in accordance your needs. Under this, there are typically undermentioned investment schemes: • Value Portfolio Value portfolio comprises of stocks that are currently underpriced relative to their Earning per Share (EPS) and Book Value per Share (BVPS). Hence, value stocks will have low P/E and P/B ratios compared to other stocks. Earnings of companies that are categorized as value stocks are temporarily depressed; as a result, investors punish these stocks and price fall below the fair value. The rationale for value investing is that because earnings of these companies are only temporarily depressed and will again revert back to the mean, there is potential to capture price appreciation. • Growth Portfolio This includes stocks of those companies that have higher future earning potential. The rationale for investing in growth portfolio is that higher expected growth in earnings will drive the stock price even higher. Because growth stock's price rises rapidly as long as earnings potential is realized, even clients with short investment horizon invests in growth portfolio. • Small/Mid Cap Portfolio Small Cap/Mid Cap portfolio comprises of stocks of companies that are smaller or average in nature in terms of market capitalization. Because these companies are relatively small and unknown, the potential returns are high because of two reasons: first, as they are small and relatively unknown, their price will increase as they grow and expand, and second, because of low price, even a small increment in price will lead to higher return. However, the risks involved in these small companies are also high as they are often in their initial stage of business. • Large Cap Portfolio Large cap portfolio comprises of stocks of companies with large market capitalization. These companies are well known to investors and have been around for a long time. Hence, the risk involved with these large cap stocks is less compared to small cap stocks. However, because many investors hold these large cap stocks and these stocks are widely followed, they are usually fairly priced.
The rationale for investing in growth portfolio is that higher expected growth in earnings will drive the stock price even higher.
In non-discretionary portfolio management services, the portfolio manager manages your funds in accordance with your directions. The portfolio manager cannot make buy-sell decisions at his own discretion; he has to refer to you for every transaction. The choice as well as the timings of the investment decisions rest solely with you as an investor. FINANCE Insurance
The Price of Risk Regrets are costlier than actually owning an insurance policy. That is why purchasing insurance policies have become very important to transfer risks away from individuals, households and corporations. Ramila Katuwal
A small amount of money spent may in advance save a huge economic losses in the future, serves as a preventive measure of risk management. Here are some of the important guidelines to protect assets and to ensure the financial stability through insurance: Identify Probable Loss Exposure
CEO at Himalayan General Insurance Co. Ltd, Mr. Sushil Bajracharya, says that before transferring the financial risk to an insurer, it is recommended that one obtain some basic information about the wide spectrum of risk exposures for individual or corporation. For instance some of the more prevalent risks exposures are: property loss exposure, and crime loss exposure (robberies, burglaries, theft, fraud and embezzlement). What that means the risk factors should be identified first. All this information can be obtained with the help of an agent or by directly visiting the proposed service provider. If you need to deal with an agent, seek for someone competent and reliable; as there is always a chance for falsification or misrepresentation of information.
Analyze Loss Exposure
Once the probable loss exposure has been identified, the frequency and severity of economic loss needs to be analyzed. Basically, it involves analyzing how many times the loss may occur within certain period, and how large will be the size of the loss within the same period. Further, it helps to determine the right amount of policy to own.
Select the Best Service Provider for treating Loss Exposure
Currently, there are seventeen general insurance companies operating in the market. Before selecting a company, it is advisable to compare the products and services offered by these companies. More importantly, the claim settlement processes should be studied carefully. Further, the government’s policy on insurance also plays a vital role on how it is received in the public. For instance, if there is a provision of subsidy or monetary reward as provided through the micro insurance policy (agro based 64 SMART FAMILY JUNE 2017
Insurance is not only a means to protect from financial loss but also a very important tool to maintain personal health and peace of mind. Fire, motor and marine insurance businesses are subject to imply tariff rate, which is prescribed by the Beema Samiti (Regulatory Body). So, there is no variation in the premium rates between service providers. All general insurance businesses excluding fire, motor and marine insurance are subject to nontariff rate (the rate prescribed by the company itself). Under this provision the risk factor, the relationship between service provider, insurer, business volume and claim experience serves as a basis for determining the premium. Nowadays, many banks as corporate agents for insurance companies, are jointly selling insurance policies, both life and non-life. There is usually no grace period available for premium payment and renewal of nonlife insurance policies.
insurance), then the tendency of owing insurance policies will certainly be high irrespective of individual disposal income.
Simplifying Claim Settlement
In case of life insurance • Life insurance policy holders are entitled to receive the insured amount after the death of the insured, or upon expiration of maturity period, whichever is earlier. In case of non-life insurance • The insured are entitled to receive compensation when the loss is occurs due to insurable risk. But not all insurance claims may be eligible for settlement. • The duration of claim settlement usually depends on the availability of valid documents. If valid documents are furnished timely, then there is a provision of spot payment. But, depending upon the situation, it might take 15 to 30 days for claim settlement. Hence, clients are equally responsible for timely claim settlement. • Always safety first. What that means is that you should first call the police not the insurance company, in order to ensure safety and prevent additional loss. • Once, the notification has been given to the police, claims can be communicated through an app as well. Companies like Himalayan General Insurance have already launched their apps to facilitate the claim procedure. • In case of third party insurance, no negotiation should be made between two parties without the approval of Insurer. If made, it could be constructed as breach of contract. JUNE 2017 SMART FAMILY 65

Suresh Paudel is no new name in Nepal’s media field. Some of media organizations where he has worked as: Nepal Television as a presenter/producer; Kantipur Television as a chief program producer, and a face of Kantipur Aaja; and recently the first HD Channel of Nepal, AP1 HD as an Operation Director (OD). We got hold of him despite of his busy schedule and asked him about the relation that he has with his one and only child Aarya Paudel. Aarya says that her father is her source of inspiration because she has always been inspired by whatever trivial or big things he has done and on the other hand Suresh says that his daughter means a world to him. He also shared with us the moment when he first saw his daughter. During his wife’s delivery he was not in Nepal. Only six days after delivery he got to meet his little one. He shares, “I still remember the day when I first held her in my arms. I do not know what went wrong, but when I held her she started crying. That moment was painful. I went in a corner and shed a few tears myself.” He also added that the first time when he saw Aarya take her first walk was an emotional moment 66 SMART FAMILY JUNE 2017
and holds this memory close to his heart. Read on more to find out all about this cute father– daughter duo.
How would you define your relationship?
Suresh: Our relationship is pure and genuine, I would say. We never feel the need to hide anything from one another. There is transparency between us. We are more like friends, to be honest. Like we said earlier, there is transparency between us, and we don’t hide anything from each other. Friends do that, don’t they?
Daughters are said to be pampered more by their father. What do you have to say about this? Is she a papa’s pampered princess? Suresh: It depends, really. Well, we make sure that she gets everything she needs and of course, we shower her with lots of love. In that case, she is pampered equally by both her parents as she is our only child.
As she is in her puberty stage, how protective are you for her?
Three things you want to do for your father
Aarya: I want to make him known by my name, gift him a studio with lots of musical instruments as he has always been passionate about music, and if I were to open any office or organization, it would be named after him since he has always supported me and I am very attached to him.
What is the best thing about one another?
Suresh: She is very caring, she is very conscious towards my health; I never take tiffin to office, so she keeps on telling me to take something to eat from home. Aarya: He is very hardworking and fun-loving at the same time.
What is that one thing you dislike about one another?
I never take tiffin to office, so she keeps on telling me to take something to eat from home.
Suresh: She actually is a mature child. I trust her but as a father, like every father, I must be protective to some extent. I make sure that wherever she goes, she has her cell phone with her and she informs me when she has reached her destination safely. Other than that, I really have not imposed strict rules on her since I trust her.
What do you two enjoy doing together?
Aarya: We enjoy having deep conversations, and we jam together occasionally as we both have keen interest in music. We play guitar and sing together.
Three trait of your father you wish you had and why?
Aarya: I wish I was as level- headed as he is. He is very sensible and does not easily get angry, unlike me. He is a perfectionist. I wish to have this trait because he has eye for details and everything he does turns out to be great. And lastly, I wish I was a positive thinker like he is. Whenever I feel down or confused, he is always there to boost my will power and show me the brighter side of things which I can’t do myself. I have a hard time convincing myself.
Suresh: She gets drowned in emotions really fast and over small matters. Her every emotion translates into tears. Aarya: He gets excited for things really quickly, way before the outcome!
What nine things should a father of a girl child know about raising her?
• I think it is important for every father to know that a girl child needs space. He shouldn’t go overboard with protectiveness. • Trust should be built between both. A father should trust his daughter and vice versa. • It is essential to be emotionally connected to a girl child so that she is not hesitant to share her problems with her father. • A father should know that spending time with his daughter will help her grow mentally/emotionally. • It is necessary for a father to tell a girl child her worth and that she’s capable of achieving anything in life. • A father should know how his bad actions or words could make a huge impact in his daughter’s life. • It is every father’s duty to tell his daughter how strong she is regardless of the fact that she is living in a world filled with misogyny. • A father should always focus on his daughter’s achievements and motivate her to work harder in life to achieve her goals rather than putting greater emphasis on her physical appearance. • A father should always assure his girl child that he is there to support her through thick and thin.

How Air Cooler Works?
The fresh air from outside is taken in, cooled, and pushed in the room. Fresh air is taken from outside and passed through an evaporative pad containing water. The hot dry air cools down when it comes in contact with water on the evaporative pad. Although there is no option to control the temperature in air coolers, but it always supplies fresh air. If we compare electricity consumption, air coolers consume 80-90% less electricity as compared to air conditioners.
How to Install Air Coolers in Home? The most common place where people install desert air coolers is on one of the windows in a room. But when there is no window or a very small window in a room, in that case the only option is setting up an air cooler on the terrace. You can also set up a bigger air cooler on the terrace with a pipe or vent system to deliver air in
all rooms. This setup helps to reduce the sound in a room generated by air coolers. Here are some of the different types of air cooler available in the market: Personal Cooler Personal coolers are the perfect answer for indoor uniform cooling. They are portable air cooler easily adjustable in any place. There is an ice chamber that can be filled with ice cubes to speed the cooling. There are completely collapsible louvers to prevent dust/ insects entering the air cooler. The capacity of personal cooler is 34 liters. It is easily available at market. Window Cooler Window air cooler is a smart choice for those who wish to enjoy the luxury of cool environment in hot summers without increment of power bills. The cooler capacity is high which allows it to perform efficiently for long hours without the need to refill. The capacity
of this model is 40 liters and there is a water level indicator that tells you when a refill is required. The air throw distance is 30 feet, which ensures that cool air reaches to all the side and corners of the room making the surrounding cool and invigorating. It is compatible with inverters and so if you have electricity problems, there is nothing to worry about. Desert Cooler Desert coolers are fitted on a window and suck air from outside. They work through the evaporation of water provided in the cooler. The capacity of this model is 90 liters. They are especially used at living room and parties’ hall. They are effective in the most searing summer temperatures but consume the lowest energy. They have remote system and incredibly low noise that leaves you undisturbed.

They look neat and can be used in any room in the house, such as the kitchen, bathrooms, living room, and more. Use these blinds as alternative options to your boring old-fashioned curtains.
Roller Blinds
Roller blinds are one of the most functional blinds that are widely used in the office room or in the house. Materials such as aluminum, faux wood, fabric, solar, cellular screen, stiffened plastic are used for slats. There is a wide range of options. SMART FRIDGE FOR SMART HOME
LG OLED TVs STOP WATCHING, START SEEING!
An average family opens their fridge about 30-40 times a day. Now, every time the door is opened, cold air is lost because of which the refrigerator consumes more energy to reach back to the set temperature. However, with one touch easy open button in the LG Door-in-Door™ refrigerator, you do not have to open the main door to get hold of the frequently accessed items. The new design refrigerator is more elegant and sophisticated with unique double layered door.
What is an OLED TV?
Hygiene Fresh+
What's the "organic" part? The specific electroluminescent materials used in OLED displays are organic compounds, which means they contain carbon plus some other ingredients. And that's one key to OLED's excellent picture quality.
LG’s Hygiene Fresh+™ technology uses a 5-stage filter to eliminate most food spoiling agents, such as dust, fungi spores, acidic and alkaline odors, and bacteria. The system removes up to 99.999% of air borne food contaminants and purifies the air inside the refrigerator to keep produce and perishables fresher longer.
Fast Freezing
Have you ever had any situation to freeze your food quickly? Fast Freezing is the right solution for your difficulties. Fast Freezing makes food frozen faster through intensive non-stopping operation and ends automatically in 2 hours. Freezing time is reduced by 32% with Fast Freezing function.
Multi Air Flow
Multiple cooling air vents distribute and circulate cool air to every corner of the refrigerator, ensuring that each and every food item is properly cooled.
LED Lighting
LED lighting is more energy efficient and lasts longer than conventional

bulbs. Also the top-mounted lights make even the fully loaded refrigerators up to 2.5 times brighter compared to the other conventional ones.
Smart Diagnosis™
LG's Smart Diagnosis™ is a fast and easy way to troubleshoot issues. Simply call the LG Customer Service Helpline and place the phone on the appliance. The appliance then communicates with a computer that produces a diagnosis within seconds and provides an immediate solution.
ENERGY SAVINGS with Inverter Linear Compressor LG's unique Inverter Linear Compressor uses a linear piston drive instead of a conventional reciprocating drive. This generates less internal friction, resulting in up to 32% lower energy consumption. LG’s Inverter Linear Compressor is also backed by a 10year warranty.
OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode. Each pixel in an OLED display is made of a material that glows when you jab it with electricity. Kind of like the heating elements in a toaster, but with less heat and better resolution. This effect is called electroluminescence, which is one of those delightful words that is big, but actually makes sense: "electro" for electricity, "lumin" for light and "escence" for, well, basically "essence."
OLED TVs have "infinite" contrast ratios, while that might sound like typical hyperbole, it is one of the extremely rare instances where such claims are actually true. Since OLED can produce a perfect black, emitting no light whatsoever, its contrast ratio (expressed as the brightest white divided by the darkest black) is technically infinite.
off fully to achieve perfect black. That means contrast- the ration between the lightest and darkest area of the screen is truly infinite. Perfect black is essential to a more lifelike image as well as the great shadow detail you can only get with OLDED.
Cinematic Color
LG OLED TVs display a color palette that virtually matches the vast range of hues seen in today’s high-end digital cinemas. With over a billion rich colors at its disposal, LG OLED TV delivers a theater-quality experience at home.
OLED HDR
OLED HDR delivers a stunning high dynamic range picture, including support for Dolby Vision ™ content. You can enjoy brilliant brights and the deepest darks for infinite contrast, rich color and exceptional viwing experience, closer to what filmmakers intended. With their perfect black and cinematic color, LG OLED TVs have also earned prestigious Ultra HD Premium Certification. Conventional TVs support 8 bit processing i.e. the maximum of 16 million colors, while
LG OLED TVs support up to HDR 12 i.e. 12 bit processing, which no other brand has in town. LG IS THE ONLY BRAND THAT SUPPORTS AND MEETS SUCH HIGH STANDARD OF PICTURE QUALITY.
Wide Viewing Angle
LG OLED TV’s exceptional picture quality holds up even from wide viewing angles, so now everyone on the couch will have an ideal view of the action.
4K Resolution
All 2016 LG OLED TV models offer 4K resolutions. That’s 8.3M OLED pixels, each ready to deliver perfect black and cinematic color for an amazingly clear and incomparably beautiful Ultra HD picture. Now with only LG with such advanced and technology worldwide, one can be assured as to how the company does things outside the box. No other TV manufacturer has produced OLED TVs till date. LG has been a pioneer in making TVs since the 1950s, and they believe their OLED TVs are the best TVs yet.
What makes OLED Better?
LG OLED uses revolutionary selflighting pixels, individually controlled to achieve perfect black and infinite contrast. It has an expanded color palette virtually identical to today’s digital cinemas, enjoyable from a wide viewing angle. LG OLED 4K TVs also support standard HDR and Dolby Vision ™.

Warm colors inspire happiness, coziness and comfort in most people. They can also make large, open spaces feel more intimate for young ones. Red has the ability to energize the body and excite the mind, and increase the heart and breathing rates. However, some research suggests that too much exposure to red encourages aggressive behavior and an inability to focus. The bottom line: red is great as an accent, but might not be the best room color for an already restless child.

KIDS' ROOM COLOR HOW COLORS AFFECT OUR KIDS BEHAVIOR
Color has the ability to inspire, excite, soothe, heal and even agitate. This is particularly true for children, who can be extra sensitive to its impact. Our design professionals from Da Interio & Decor share why picking out just the right color for a young child's room shouldn't be underestimated.
82 SMART FAMILY JUNE 2017
While scientists have learned a lot about the way color influences our minds and bodies, keep in mind that every child is different, and generalizations don't apply to all. But if you're curious about how to bring color into your child's room. The following general guidelines will help you.
Largely underused, orange is perhaps one of the most misunderstood colors in the paint deck. This warm, friendly and youthful color is actually great for children since it's said to encourage confidence, extroversion, and independence. The social nature of this color also puts children and their friends at ease, inspiring communication and cooperation. Most of us associate yellow with feelings of happiness and cheerfulness. Studies also pair this bright and cheery color with motivation. Softer yellows can aid concentration, while brighter ones can increase memory. Beware of using too much bright yellow, though. In large doses it may create feelings of agitation, and even anger. This calming, natural color has a soothing impact on a child. Scientists have also found that green may improve a child's reading speed and comprehension. There's no need to keep this anxiety-reducing color to a minimum. Having the opposite effect of red, blue decreases feelings of anxiety and aggression and lowers blood pressure and heart rates. Children who experience tantrums or other behavioral problems may appreciate the soothing effects of a blue room.
The Art of Designing
Often associated with royalty, purple is ambitious and self-assured. It's also the color of passion, creativity, wisdom and spirituality. This deep and emotive color is great for inspiring sensitivity and compassion in children. But if your child is particularly sensitive, you may want to keep this color limited to accents. Although it's usually associated with typical girly spaces, pink has a calming feel that can translate to both sexes. Any child can grow out of too much pink quickly, though, so try pairing pink artwork, accessories and textiles with a neutral background.ors Warm colors inspire happiness, coziness and comfort in most people. They can also make large, open spaces feel more intimate for young ones. Of course, this doesn't mean you're limited to brown and tan — use these easy colors as a platform for brighter and more daring shades.olors Some of us associate cool colors with sterile, hospital-like environments, but lighter cool colors can have a calming effect on children. Plus, many of these colors help small spaces seem a little bit more open. Try layering in shades of cream for some softness and contrast, and consider comfortable and cuddly textiles for warmth.

OF HANGING PICTURE A little to the left. A little to right. Oh now it’s perfect! Sirsa Tuladhar
Photos and artworks you choose to display portray your taste as much as any other thing in your house. Unfortunately, many people miss out on the opportunity to bring out the best way in photo display by falling prey to the following mistakes. 1. Hanging them without a Plan
Making your walls a work of art doesn’t happen without a plan. Your pictures are fabulous and they need to be presented the same way too: not too loud or too subtle. Tackle this by laying your pictures on the floor like a blueprint. This lets you observe the placement without hammering nails on your wall. Mix among the dark and the light pictures to bring out the best.
2. Using Adhesive Hooks
Adhesive hooks are just not up to the job. They can’t hold the weight of your pictures and your pictures will eventually end up on the floor. You will want to use the correct hook and cord to safely hang your pictures, so ask for advice from your hardware store or picture framers.
3. Picking out Flashy Frame
A frame or mounting should complement your picture. Choose a frame that enhances your picture. You don't want your eye catching frame to overshadow your picture.
4. A healthy Fear of Height
high. The ideal height to hang your pictures is the eye level, which makes it easy for people to enjoy looking at them.
5. Hanging them in Poor Environment
Yes, your pictures need proper lighting to shine but not in areas with high humidity or direct sunlight. The harsh sunlight and humidity in rooms like kitchen and bathroom accelerate the aging process of your pictures.
6. Hanging them Flat against the Wall
Never hang your frames flat against the wall. It encourages dust accumulation and mould growth behind the frames. To discourage this, put small flat object such as a matchbox behind your pictures.
7. Randomness in Size
When you choose the pictures you want to hang, you need to remember the space where you are going to hang them: too big and your pictures will make your wall look crowded;
Another common mistake we make in hanging picture is making them float in the sky -- hanging them too

Villa Aahana HOME House Review
A Depiction of Sophistication Pratik Lohani
Villa Aahana, perched slightly away from the hustle and bustle of the Thapathali junction, is a truly cosmopolitan themed abode of Paras Shakya, Megha Chaudhary Shakya and their daughter Aahana. Their home reflects their lifestyle, family and professional ties overarching spatial design. The social intricacies that come along with, being a part of an extended family, running an enterprise and need for privacy and peace for both, Megha and Paras, along the leisure and security they needed to provide for Aahana, urged them to build their luxurious dream home. 86 SMART FAMILY JUNE 2017

HOME House Review
A A Designer’s Delight
The interior of the house, designed by the husband wife duo of Rishi Saraf and Sunaina Saraf, accentuates a modern contemporary theme. Whilst primarily opting for a modernistic visual, entailed by Megha’s preference for quiet elegance and sophistication, a subtle touch of classicism has been cleverly integrated by chief designer Rishi. The luxury that they were provided with the space has helped them design in a way that enhances the lifestyle of the family. Quintessentially, they wanted their clients to enjoy every corner of their home.
The Lavish Living
The need for a spacious living room and an adjacent foyer comes from the family’s love for entertaining friends and family as well as the need for official engagements. There are guests of the family who often drop by for a casual meet up. As Megha runs the operation at the nearby Norvic Hospital, she often invites doctors and staff for small discussions and gatherings which demands an apt setting. The living rooms opens into the accompanying bar and dining area. Hence, functionality was a vital part of the planning of the public areas. As in case with the rest of the house, there is a recurring theme of minimalist contemporary elements in these spaces, but the furniture and lighting fixtures exude a sense of timelessness. Everything from the custom-made furniture, specially ordered fabrics and wallpaper to the handpicked chandeliers, lights and accessories sourced from all over the world highlight a harmonious integration of the classic luxury.
Everyday Blessings
Villa Aahana is different from other contemporary residence designs in the sense that the Puja room is placed on the ground floor right across the kitchen, as opposed to placing it in isolation in the upper floors. The idea behind this, reveals Megha, is the want be to in spiritual presence of god during the daily routines of the family. The room, exclusive in most other house, is open to all visitors as she believes god is for all. The Puja, painted vibrant peach is big enough for the whole family to fit into during prayers. The room is carpeted to allow for occasions where the family would be needed to be seated for special ceremonies and festivals.

House Review HOME Decor
Aahana’s Very Own Palace
Aahana’s bedroom is not a conventional child’s bedroom. It is as big as her imagination. This emanates from Megha’s experience from her previous home where her daughter had limited space that restricted her playfulness, and thus spent her time on electronic gadgets. Hence in her new home, Aahana has her bedroom, fit for a princess. There are no bright/cartoon themes as Megha didn’t want Aahana to be obsessed with characters, but rather be at peace in her room. The Moroccan style bedroom has a lavishly styled bathroom with Biazza tiled tub that reflects Aahana’s love for water and the tall beaten gold antique sconces on the wall gently echo the middle eastern princess look. It also includes a wardrobe that most definitely will serve her till adolescence. Paras and Megha want their daughter to grow with the room.
Chic Black and Paras
Paras Shakya loves black. For people who know him as a front man for, ‘Antim Grahan’ a famous black metal band in Nepal, this comes as no surprise. The master bedroom was one place where he wanted the black theme to be highlighted. The designers were initially skeptic about the prominence of black, but found a way to introduce chic black theme glamorously. Classic elements like the gold distressed mirror lights and beautiful mirrors accent the bold colors of the master bedroom while providing a warm glow to the room at night. In addition, Megha’s love for animal print has been incorporated in the soft animal print cushions and throw in subtle tones without being too empowering.
The Fun Family Lounges
The family essence is at the heart of the design of this residence. As a result, there are two different family lounges placed at different floor levels to serve different purposes. An open family lounge that accompanies Aahana’s bedroom is a place where she interacts with her friends and her grandparents. The upper family lounge is recreational. Family and friends spend time on their gaming consoles or simply watching TV.
The New-Age Courtyard
It was a conscious effort on the client’s part to adhere to the principles of Vaastu Shastra. This atrium is an interpretation of Brahmasthan, a deliberate open to sky space. Large glass facades help the family establish a connection with nature, as views of the gardens and sky are ever present. The overhanging pendant lights are another innovative feature of this space.

HOME House Review
Everyone involved with the villa believes it is a creative amalgamation of personalities. There is a purpose and reflection of members of the family in individual spaces.
The Little things that Matter
The attention to details is what sets Villa Aahana uniquely apart. An office with separate workstations help Paras and Megha work from home when the need be. Adjacent to the office, a closet dedicated to stWore off season attire is present. This space was essential as the family faced constraints in the previous house. A separate bedroom, for Aahana’s grandparents from both sides is used when they come to visit or need to stay back after a party or a gathering. There is a profound emotional meaning behind this room as both sets of grandparents feel a sense of ownership in Villa Aahana. Another fascinating aspect of the house is the installation of the elevator. The family credits the wisdom of Mr. Basanta Chaudhary, who insisted that lifts be installed for a time when family members will have a difficulty with the staircase. These lifts have proved invaluable during parties often held in the house. Dance room for Aahana and a music room for Paras help channel the creative energy that runs in the family into a discipline. The terrace garden with a pantry serves as a hangout space for times when the family want to gather in an exterior setting but at the same time want to avoid the pollution of the valley. Home automation in the form of RFID locks, motion sensors, CCTV, compartmentalized music systems, sensor armed windows and heat alarms provide a needed security 92 SMART FAMILY JUNE 2017
in the house. The family deemed it necessary to upgrade themselves with technology.
Serenity exemplified
The interior of the house reflects peace. The owners envisioned a calm, almost spa like space where one relaxes at the end of the day, when they first met the designers. Thus, designers opted for a neutral color palate with underlying blue shades. Buddha Idols and paintings are ubiquitous, in keeping with the owner’s vision.
The Embodiment
Everyone involved with the villa believes it is a creative amalgamation of personalities. There is a purpose and reflection of members of the family in individual spaces. The designers are appreciative for the fact that they could work with a clean slate to be able to harness all their creative energies and both Paras and Megha are happy to see that their input was also valued and incorporated skillfully in their dream home. It is also noteworthy that a conscious effort has been made to prove that not everything has to be foreign, showcased by the custom designed furniture made in Nepal and displays of specially commissioned works of art of local artists. To sum it up, Villa Aahana is a representation of a global design phenomenon and a result of good teamwork.

Cycle Your Tires Suhit Manandhar
We all know the expenses associated with replacing the vehicles tires. We also know that no tires last forever. But we can extend their life by few hundred kilometers by following guidelines as suggested by the mechanics or experts. Among many guidelines, one of them is cycling or rotating of tires which can be done at home. All you need to know is the basic knowledge on how to change the tires. The rear tires are the most vulnerable which succumb to wear and tear than the front tires. The front tires move according to the direction the vehicle is headed but the rear tires get dragged and do not move like the front tires. So, to even out the wear and tear, rotating the tires after certain distance can be very helpful in the long run.
The best technique of rotating the tires is to rotate it in a crisscross manner after the first 15000-20000 Km. Rotate the front right tire with the rear left tire and the front left tire with the rear right tire. After every 15000-20000 Km, rotate the front left tire with the rear left tire and the front right tire with the rear right tire.

DRIVE Review DRIVE Review Getting inside the car was a like a regular affair as with any other hatchback. The door opens wide and there is sufficient room to enter easily. For someone who is 5ft 10in tall, even as I sat in, there was ample knee and leg space, a good distance between the steering wheel and me, and a modest space above the head. It can also accommodate someone who is taller and larger quite easily, and the average-sized person would have no difficulty getting in and out. The only thing I found myself wishing for was more width space, which did make me feel slightly cramped. Overall, size wise it was reasonably comfortable. The rear seats were also spacious enough, meant for two average sized individuals. However, accessing the rear is still through the front doors. Besides this, the car seemed to have tried to buy as much space as it could from everywhere else to create more room for comfortable seating.

e2o SPORTZ On a bright sunny day in the city, we took out the new Mahindra e2o Sportz for a spin. This compact electric vehicle defines a real city car. Abhinav Das Shrestha
The Mahindra e2o Sportz is a fully electric vehicle built for modern city commuting. With revamped new exterior designs, the new e2o looks more futuristic, and it displays more seriousness in its shapes and cuts than the previous model. 96 SMART FAMILY JUNE 2017
The controls and dashboard are very ergonomic. The interiors instrument cluster seemed quite similar to just about any other hatchback. Nothing experimental or fancy was added in the designs. However, the android based touch screen infotainment system on the dashboard is the highlight of the car. It can be connected to your smartphone, bringing you all the features of a modern futuristic electric vehicle. All you have to do is download the car’s app, and with that you can perform a multiple of tasks. You can lock/unlock the doors, know the exact battery status of the car, and get a visual display of the car's performances as well as check tire pressure levels, all from wherever you may be, as long as you have Wi-Fi connection. Simply by using your phone you can even turn the air conditioning on, and let the interior of car get to a comfortable temperature before you enter the vehicle; very useful in the hot summer days. The driving experience in this electric vehicle was a different experience. Unlike regular petrol and diesel cars, you don't have to work the gears. Electric motors offer all that they have within seconds. Driving through city traffic, making those quick turns and maneuvering through tight gaps is what it’s all about. It might just be the kind of car you’re looking for to get around the busy chaotic streets of Kathmandu. Although we felt that driving around the city was a little rough (thanks to the ever present potholes), as even minor undulations could be easily felt, and neither the bad roads, nor the basic and thin seats helped the situation. However, the car was effortlessly smooth on even surfaces, and had a wonderful pick-up, which came as a surprise for a car of this small size. At times when you feel like you need more power, simply shift it to the Boost mode. Then just press the pedal and the car darts forward with unbelievable power. Since there are no gears to work around, there are no transmission losses, and all the power comes out in an instant. This option is really helpful for those uphill roads across our city. The steering wheel was very light, and offered no feedback the way petrol and diesel cars would provide. The battery takes a full 8 to 9 hours to charge completely and the company claims that a full charge gives a total of 126 km coverage. It also has a fast charge option which can charge the vehicle within 1 hour 30 minutes, but

This new model allows us to replace only the cells, which costs not more than rupees 5 to 7 thousand each. There is even a ‘Vacation Mode’ which helps save the battery life if you go away for 2-3 weeks. In this mode the battery doesn’t deplete completely.
