A best friend might be a gift in life but having a sister is having an unmatched bond for life. Bound by family and intertwined by fate, even when the world feels like it’s crumbling all around you, your sister is usually there for you to fall back on. 20 SMART FAMILY JANUARY 2018
JANUARY 2018 SMART FAMILY 21
Cover Story But what if your sister just so happens to be a Miss Nepal? Do the rules still apply? We sat down with Asmi Shrestha, the winner of Miss Nepal 2016 and her elder sister Oshin to discuss, among other things, the dynamics of their relationship, how Asmi manages to juggle so many grand endeavors, and the role Oshin played in shaping Asmi into the person she is today. One can perhaps find only a handful of people in Nepal who don’t know who Asmi is. She started out as a model and then went on to win the title of Miss Nepal in 2016 at the age of just 23. The pageant winner has since been staying very active, promoting a number of big brands and pushing various social causes while still tackling a number of other projects. Q. What are you involved in at the moment? Asmi: I was a model before I became Miss Nepal in 2016. So I have always been involved in various fashion projects. Be it modeling for fashion brands or featuring in different magazines, I have always stayed active in modeling. I am also endorsing a few institutions and projects at the moment. I am associated with Lumbini Academy College as a Goodwill Ambassador. I am involved with its students and also mentor, council and train them. I also recently tied up with a restaurant chain called Bota as its Brand Ambassador. Besides that, I am involved in the Classroom and Beyond Project and a rally event by Vespa aimed towards helping children with HIV. Oshin: Unlike my sister, I work a 9 to 5 job as a Counselor and Application Officer at Alpha Beta Institute in New Baneshwor. I counsel the students who want to apply to colleges abroad and guide their application process. Q. Who is the older sibling? Asmi: I hate it when people think that I am the older sibling among the two. Oshin is actually older than me by almost three years. I also have a younger brother who is seven years younger than me. So I am the middle child. 22 SMART FAMILY JANUARY 2018
Q. What are the things the two of you have in common and what sets you apart? (Both): We both use the same makeup and wardrobe!! Asmi: Maybe because of the fact that both of us use the same makeup and clothes, people nowadays tell us that we look very similar. Oshin used to look a lot like Mamu and I used to look a lot like Baba. Obviously we are sisters but we used to look very different. When it comes to our differences, she is a very good dancer and I’m not (laughs). She is also very crazy, and I say that in a good way! She is hilarious around people and manages to liven up any situation. I, on the other hand, am quite reserved and tend to act the same everywhere. Oshin: We also both love being around our family. Asmi is very quiet sometimes. Compared to me, she has always been quite reserved and humble. She also comes off as more sophisticated in the sense that she always has good posture and discipline. I tend to have a more laid back and casual attitude towards everything. Q. What are the things that you like and don’t like about your sister? Oshin: When it comes to the positives, Asmi is a really focused, determined and hard working person. She is also very smart. For instance, I might spend months preparing for an exam but end up not getting the scores I wanted. She, on the other hand, doesn’t study much but end up scoring excellent grades. The one thing that I dislike about her is that she is very mean sometimes. She sometimes tends to express herself without a filter, which ends up hurting my feelings.
Asmi: She just told you that I’m focused and determined, but it is she that helps me to stay that way. I love that about her. She is the one who always points me towards the right direction. Be it when it comes to picking my clothes or making an important business decision, I can always go up to her at any time and she will help me clear things out. Because I’m so busy nowadays, I can’t always return the favor, but she’s always there for me. She’s more like my best friend than my sister. Best friends that have always been together. When it comes to the thing that I dislike about her, most of the time, she does what she wants to do without a care in the world. Maybe it’s a good trait to have but I often find myself asking “Just Why!” around her. Q. What is the funniest or the most memorable moment you have of each other? Oshin: When we were kids, I was very naughty and used to influence her to participate in a lot of my shenanigans. This one time, we were playing in a stairway that was about a storey tall. I started jumping from the top stairway and because I was a little taller, I managed to land my jumps with ease. Then when I asked her to do the same, she got really scared and backed midair and got stuck -- hanging on the rails. To make sure that she doesn’t get hurt and our parents don’t find out, I had to make her stand on my shoulders so that I could push her back up. I giggle every time I remember the moment. Asmi: When it comes to the most memorable memory, a week after my reigning year came to an end, I had to go to Bangkok for some work and Oshin decided that she wanted to join me. We spent a week having a lot of fun. And the fact that we got to

Do you have special nicknames for each other? Asmi: I call her “Moti.” Oshin: Casually, I call her “Nani.” Asmi: No, Go ahead! You can tell him. I won’t mind!! Oshin: Okay! I call her “Haddi.” Asmi: Every time we call each other by those names, Mamu gets really mad. She thinks that by calling her “Moti” and she calling me “Haddi,” I’ll get skinnier and she’ll get bigger. This one time, we even joked that we should swap our nicknames to counter the effects (laughs). Q. Is there anything that the one of you can do better than the other? Oshin: I have always had a knack for cooking. I also like to think that I’m a good dancer. Asmi on the other hand is good in writing and giving speeches. Whenever I have to write something, I ask her to edit it. Asmi: I’m good at being diplomatic. I’m good with “word selection” I suppose. I can sweeten conversations up, whereas Oshin tends to be very straightforward and direct. Since I am a middle child, I know how to talk to both ends of the spectrum. Q. Who has a better sense of style among the two of you? Oshin: Of course! She does. Asmi: Yeah! But she adds the value to the clothes I wear. Yes, I’m more conscious when it comes to my wardrobe but she is the one who gives makeup more priority. So whenever I need to go to different events, she helps me with my makeup. 24 SMART FAMILY JANUARY 2018

Saturdays. Asmi also makes it a point to call me, even when she’s travelling to keep me updated with everything.
Q. Can you remember each other’s greatest achievements? Asmi: Oshin is the first among us to complete a Master’s degree, which I feel is a greater achievement than it probably is because she seldom got good scores in college.
Asmi: This one time Oshin was spending a lot of time at work. Our Mamu insisted that she make some time for the family. Mamu starts panicking if we don’t spend time with each other.
Oshin: Before the Miss Nepal pageant, Asmi won a contest called “Face of Classic Diamond” in 2014. I didn’t know much about it then and so I wasn’t very involved, but I was very happy. It was only when she started preparing for Miss Nepal that I got to witness just how hardworking and focused she really is. On some days she would return home happy and on some other days sad, demotivated and exhausted. Being the elder sister, I felt like I had some responsibilities and so I tried to help her in any way I could. If you were to watch the video, you can see just how nervous I was, and I started crying even before the official announcement was made. Q. How often do the two of you fight and who initiates the makeup session? (Both): Since we have always spent so much time with each other, we are bound to argue with each other a lot. We don’t argue as much these days because of the fact that we’re both so busy. But when we do argue, we quickly understand who is in the wrong and try to patch things up. But we never hold grudges. Q. How do you make time for each other? Oshin: There is a limit for everything. Whenever we feel that Asmi is very busy, we ask her to make some time to spend with the family. I have a 9 to 5 job and am mostly home on
Q. Do the two of you share any hobbies together? (Both): We both love listening to music and watching famous TV serial Friends, which we can watch countless times. We also love to watch MTV SplitsVilla together. Q. (To Oshin) Do you consider her to be a celebrity? Oshin: Asmi is and will always be my sister before she is a Miss Nepal to me. We have only become closer since then. It’s only when we are out and people come up to her to talk to her and take pictures with her that I realize that she is actually is a celebrity. Q. Anything you want to add as a closing statement? Asmi: Oshin played a very big role in me being Miss Nepal 2016. She has a big role in me being the person I am today. When I participated in Miss Nepal, our parents were away. It is at times like these that you are the most vulnerable, and when you need someone to support you emotionally! This one time, I came back home after messing up a training session and started crying. Oshin, being the sister that she is, not only made me realize how I was responsible for the state I was in but also helped me see the silver lining and eventually helped me come out from it victorious. Simple acts like these really helped me get through some of my toughest times. JANUARY 2018 SMART FAMILY 25
Travelogue
Wanderlust for the West Wanderlust: The desire to travel, see new sights, do new things. It is a feeling that people who love new experiences hold dear to themselves. Basically, wanderlust is the feeling you would get if you were on Aladdin’s magic carpet, seeing the world. Dayishaa Daga
Our story today isn’t about Aladdin and Jasmine, but does take a similar tangent, where Mr. Riken Maharjan and his wife Ms. Barsha Shrestha chase their wanderlust for the West. They hop on a plane instead of a magic carpet, and fit their journey of the world into 35 days and hefty suitcases. This magical journey begins with sightseeing in Geneva, and goes on to shopping in Paris, photography in New York, and so on. Known for its chocolate, watches, mountains and perfect weather, Geneva is a perfect city with a rich history. Sitting in a valley in Lac Léman and surrounded by the snowcapped Alps, the city is a gem that Switzerland loves to flaunt. Not only is it famous for its cheese, watches and chocolate, but also for a large number of tourists that visit Geneva for hiking, skiing, snowboarding, sailing, or any other activity that pumps adrenaline whilst letting them soak in the nature. In the city, streets are lined with cafés, luxury boutiques, grand monuments, and museums. This beautiful setting was just the beginning of their trip. Of course, being the foodies, shoppers and art enthusiasts that Mr. Riken and Ms. Barsha are, they thoroughly enjoyed all of these aspects of the city. When asked about 26 SMART FAMILY JANUARY 2018

There were so many different parks to choose from. We were excited to see diverse group of people living in Geneva who were really relaxed and friendly. The city is very tourist friendly as almost all public transportation for tourists was free. You could travel through bus, boat or train for free in Geneva. As it was our first time in Switzerland we loved every Swiss dish we tried, especially cheese.”

Obviously, one stop in Europe is never enough. Going to just one place in Europe would be like only having one slice of your pizza- it’s impossible. The second stop of the trip was in the breathtaking Paris of France. Paris is a city soaked in passion. The entire community is always engaged, either in food or fashion or travel. Not only are the streets lined with aesthetic cobblestone, they are also filled with colorful canopies that display treats like butter scones and blueberry crepes. Paris has a way of romancing visitors with its elegant beauty and magical ambience. Nobody escapes the sultry charm of the streets of Paris and the riverside of Siene. So obviously, this part of the trip was the most romantic and heartwarming time for the pair. They visited monuments like the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame, and the Champs-Elysées Boulevard, fell in love with the pink sunsets, and had a grand time overall. To quote them, “We loved Hôtel du Théâtre by Patrick Hayat in Paris. Every corner of the hotel represented Paris really well. We chose this small hotel because we knew the service was really good but the best part of the hotel was its location. It was easy to travel to any tourist spots even if it was late night. We enjoyed the hopon and hop-off tour as we could sit back, relax on the double decker bus.” Aside from sightseeing, the couple also shopped a lot, seeing the fact that they were in the fashion capital of the world. They also tried French dishes such as Coq au vin, Gougère and baguettes. This was the last part of
Not only are the streets lined with aesthetic cobblestone, they are also filled with colorful canopies that display treats like butter scones and blueberry crepes. their serene Europe trip, followed by which was the bustling USA. Next stop: New York. New York is where the happy couple did most of their roaming around, exploring the city and general “touristing.” “As Alicia Keys would say about New York “Concrete jungle where dreams are made of, there’s nothing you can’t do, now you’re in New York!” The couple traveled all around the city, including all the mainstream tourist spots such as Times Square, the statue of liberty, the Empire State Building and the Metropolitan Museum of art. Although all of these places were a new and unique experience, the visit to the metropolitan museum of art was definitely the most moving one, with art pieces that dated decades back and provoked existential peace and turmoil simultaneously. It was a spiritual experience. Other than these mainstream spots, they also visited the aesthetic streets of SoHo, Brooklyn Bridge and the Bronx. Pictures were taken, a lot of shopping was done, and most importantly, tons of new food were eaten at delis. After the hustle and bustle of New York City, the couple took the scenic route towards nature by visiting New Hampshire. New Hampshire is known largely for its large forests, hiking trails and wilderness. Unlike New York, it is full of quaint towns and a sparse population. White Mountain, National Forest and Mt. Washington, the region’s highest peak, are some of the most famous spots to hike or camp in the area. Also in the White Mountains are moose, black bears and part of the Appalachian Trail.
“New Hampshire was an adventure,” Ms. Barsha said. “We went camping for 3 days in New Hampshire. We went hiking, fishing, boating and swimming. It felt really nice to connect with nature, and be in the wild with no work pressure.” As the couple stated, the hiking, camping and recreational activities were engaging and a new experience. Due to this, it might have been quite taxing to put in that much effort into being one with nature, but as they say, once you see the top of the hill and the air is clear and the view knocks the wind out of you, it is all worth it. Other than that, the fishing and boating activities were the most fun, and catching their first fish was definitely the highlight of the trip to New Hampshire. Some of the other places that Mr. Riken and Ms. Barsha visited during their trip were Boston and Washington DC. Boston is Massachusetts’ capital in America. It’s one of the oldest cities in the U.S. While they were in Boston, the couple visited Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile walking route of historic sites that tells the story of the USA’s Civil War and founding. Other attractions that they visited included Haymarket, Faneuil Hall Marketplace (the most popular market in Boston), Fenway Park, Historic Pubs & Taverns, Newbury Street Boutiques, New England Aquarium, and Boston Harbor Islands. Washington DC, the ultimate place to see the history of America through historical figures, was a fun and informative aspect of the trip. It is also home to various museums, opera houses, theaters and other performing arts centers such as the Kennedy Center. While in DC, the couple went sightseeing at world renowned places such as the White House and Lincoln Memorial Statue. All in all, the month long trip between Europe and America was layered with breathtaking sights, cherry skies, iconic museums, adventure, nature, good food and most importantly, great company. Undoubtedly, Mr. Riken and Ms. Barsha quenched their wanderlust for the West with vibrant days of experience and memorable moments as souvenirs. JANUARY 2018 SMART FAMILY 29
PARENTING. Grooming Tales Srisha Poudel
CHILDREN NOWADAYS are always “socializing” with their electronic devices rather than with actual social beings. Parents of such children are worried, but feel that they can do very little to change the situation. So, how about making the children realize that the games they play on their gadgets are made by humans, and humans are much more interesting than their gadgets. With this perception, Mridula Saira and Aayushi Kedia, have been running a programming class called “Code Master” for children aged between 6 to 14. Mridula Saira and Aayushi Kedia, the founders of Grooming Tales, have
been running various classes for kids since past two years. “Code Master” is extraordinary yet simple course that is designed for children to understand logic. Here ‘logic’ means to think analytically, and to understand the depth of things. If you ask a child, who made games, he/she likely will say computer made them. But Code Master makes them understand how the games are actually made, who makes them and how does they work. It is basically about making children know the logic behind
how things are made. They are planning to expand their area very soon and add classes like storytelling and book reading for kids below six years of age.

Q
I have more than twenty students in my class. There is one student who needs more care and attention than other students. Lately there have been complaints from parents and children that I am giving more time to this particular child, at the expense of other students. I don’t want to leave behind any student. How do I deal with this situation? (Teacher) I applaud your concern as a teacher towards each of your students. However, as you pointed, you are also responsible for providing your mentorship to all the students without any bias. Since you have not provided the specifics about the nature of thus student's needs and why he/she requires more attention, I will try to cover a variety of situations. If the student demands time because of his/her disruptive behavior, it is important to first understand why the child misbehaves. Understanding if the motivation is to attain something such as an object or an agenda, to gain attention of the teacher or fellow student's, to escape a task, or for sensory input, helps you to adequately create a plan to change the behavior.
A
If the student is demanding your time because he/she needs more help with instruction then you can apply techniques such as pairing the student with another student, planning lessons that are differentiated and more open-ended which allow students of all spectrum to engage in the learning activity. Despite everything, if the student consistently demands more time, it is advisable to talk to your supervisor and discuss plans to help the child become more independent progressively. Sometimes, this might involve setting small reachable goals with corresponding rewards and consequences, or even having -- in some cases -- an additional teacher related to special education needs.
Q
My daughter wants to start an Instagram account. How do I control her use, and what are the measures I need to take to ensure her online safety? (Parent) Social media is a big part of social life for many children. While it is a vital aspect of children's social and creative lives, it can be risky too. If you feel your daughter is old enough to have her own Instagram account then she must be old enough to understand that there are rules she needs to abide by. Have an open discussion with your daughter about the rules, what they mean and the consequences for breaking them. While the specifics of the

rules may vary from family to family, and also depending on the age of your child, here are a few areas you might want to consider when establishing ground rules for the use of social media: • place and time to use social media, • posting content and comments (being a responsible digital citizen), • protection of privacy (privacy setting, password and login details, sharing personal information online, log out after using public computers), • staying safe on social media (pop ups, questionnaires, free giveaways, contests follow request). Also, talk to your child about online reputation and the permanence of the information posted online and its impact on future job application or college application, and periodically monitor the sites visited, pictures posted (to see if they give away the identity and address of your child) and her circle of friends.
Q
My parents want me to study immediately after I return from school. I really would like to rest for a while before I study. Frankly such pressures make me nervous, and make me think that I am not putting in enough effort. How many hours of extra study do I need to undertake at home every day during school days, and weekends? (Student) The amount of time a student spends after school depends from person to person as the rate of completing work and your educational needs are different from another student. However, there are a few things you need to do during your after school study hours which include but are not limited to: completing assignments; doing revision work; and preparing for school the next day. Make a plan (schedule) to meet your needs to get these tasks done and share it with your parents to come to a middle ground. I am sure they will understand and respect your choices as long as they see that you understand your responsibilities and you have a plan in place. Good luck!

Choosing the Right School Deciding on a school to enroll your child is perhaps the second most important decision you will make as a parent after deciding to have a child. Choosing the right school could potentially put your child on a path toward lifelong learning, prestigious college education and a successful career. A lot is at stake, and new parents in particular need guidance in choosing the right school. Prity Shrestha Rajbhandary
How do you pick the best school for your child? In today's day and age, finding the best school for your child can seem like an insurmountable task. If you are looking for a school that will make your child’s educational experience as rewarding as possible, a careful planning is a must. Here are a few helpful suggestions that might help you in the process of choosing the right school for your child. Consider your child’s needs: Start your search for the best school by thinking about what you want a school to do for your child. It's important to make sure that the school your child attends is the best fit for the long haul as your child will grow and develop in that school. Ask yourself these questions: Do I want my child to have an international experience? Do I want to focus on moral values? Is sports important? etc. Gather information about schools: If you were looking to buy a car, vacuum cleaner, or refrigerator, you could talk to friends and family, or search on the internet, consumer magazines, or in other published resources to find additional information about the school product. Similarly, when investigating schools, you need make phone calls to the people who have studied in that school, collect written material from different schools and look for reports in your local newspaper to get the information you need. The hard work you put in now will result in your finding a school that brings out the best in your child.
ensure safety of children. Parents may also wish to consider the after-school programs -- such as, sports, clubs, tutoring, or academic enrichment -- the school offers.
Visit and Observe Schools
This is the most critical part when choosing a school. You simply cannot rely on the opinions of others or a website to tell you what a school is really These are a few additional questions we need to ask ourselves when choosing the right school: • Does the school do all it can to make sure each child is learning? Does it provide opportunities for children to get extra help when they need it? • What is the homework policy? Does it match your expectations for how much homework your child should have? • What special achievements or recognition has the school received? • What measures does the school take to ensure safety? What security measures are in place? • Is there a well-stocked library where students can check out books and do research? • Is the school orderly and neat?
like. Contact the schools that you are interested in and make an appointment for a visit them. If possible, tour the schools during regular school hours and visit a few classes. When scheduling a visit, avoid visiting schools during the first or last week of a term, if you want to get a realistic sense of how the school operates. A good way to have your questions answered is to schedule an appointment with the school principal. If possible, also attend an open house, parentteacher meeting, or other school functions that would provide valuable information about the attitudes of staff, students, and parents. Listen closely to what teachers say about the school. The teachers are the adults closest to your child at the school, and you will want to know if they are well prepared, dedicated, and happy in their jobs.
Suryansh Sharma (Grade 1Y), Sony Sharma, Vivek Sharma Premier International IB World School
Along with the school’s curricula and philosophy, you will want to know about its policies and services. It is also important to find out about the school’s discipline policy, and measures taken to 34 SMART FAMILY JANUARY 2018

Mental health is often overlooked and given little importance in our society. But it is an important issue, and as parents, or teachers, we should do whatever we can to ensure children’s good mental health. Mental health doesn’t necessarily mean you should take your child off to a psychiatrist at the slightest sign of emotional problem. To a large extent you can prevent mental health problem by your words and actions, as they say: “Actions speak louder than words,” and “Words are more hurtful than sticks and stones.” There are a number of different things you can do that may help your children have a good mental health and prevent them from having any kind of mental scars that may harm them for the rest of their lives. The following are some of the points that you may want to teach your children:
Live for the moment rather than unduly and excessively worry about the future
CHILD MENTAL HEALTH What You can do?
A good and healthy childhood can permanently and positively affect children’s adulthood, and even the entirety of their life.
Don’t get me wrong, everyone should think of the future, especially children, as they do have a lot of life left to live for. But putting up big stakes on minor things will not bring in a mature perspective, and may not affect them in the best way. Let them live in the moment and enjoy themselves, instead of making them unduly and excessively be worried about the future.
Make mistakes and fail rather than play only to their strengths
There is no harm in trying something new. Urge your kids to explore what they are good at and what they are not good at. They don’t have to stick to just their strengths; they can just as easily be Jack of all trades. This way they won’t have major regrets, or miss out on things.
Be compassionate rather than selfish
Kids shouldn’t be taught to just think about themselves, rather they should be taught to put themselves in other people’s shoes. That is, they should be able to show compassion to others, as well as to themselves. People also often forget to be kind to themselves, and this can lead to poor decision making skills and poor self-esteem. In addition to the above points, there are a few other points you should consider: 1. Celebrate diversity Children are unique. They have their own traits and characteristic that define who they are. By generalizing your children, you are putting them
By stereotyping your child, you are putting them inside a box, not letting them be who they are, not letting them realize their full potential.
This article is primarily based on a workshop tilted, “Child Mental Health” is a workshop conducted by Prathama Raghavan, who has a PhD in Developmental Psychology, and is a mental health & disability professional. Prathama Raghavan is also an expert in childhood & adolescence, gender & sexuality, trauma, wellbeing and inclusive education. The workshop was part of the Innovation Education Fair that was held in Nepal Art Council on August 12, 2017.
inside a box, and not letting them be who they are, or letting them realize their full potential. Don’t try to shame your daughter if she likes cars, don’t shame your son if he likes playing with dolls, and don’t shame your child if he/she likes people of his/her own sex. Accept them and let them be who they want to be. 2. Encourage reflection Reflection is crucial, and should be taught and put in action by every child. Instead of just shaming them or guilt tripping them, encourage your children to reflect upon their mistakes, to know what they have done wrong. This way, they will have a true understanding of their mistakes, and will learn from them. 3. More conversation, less surveillance Don’t try to snoop through your children’s phone or social media accounts to find out what they have been up to and what they are currently doing as tempting as that might sound. Trust your children, and start conversations with them rather than waiting to find out about them through other sources. Make them feel comfortable with you, and build an environment such that they feel comfortable approaching you with whatever issues they may have.

BODY. FOOD AS MEDICINE WHAT A WOMAN eats and drinks during pregnancy is the main source of nourishment for the baby. So, it is recommended that a pregnant woman choose a variety of healthy foods and beverages to provide the important nutrients a baby needs for growth and development.
Pregnant women need calcium, folic acid, iron and protein during her pregnancy. A healthy diet for a pregnant woman should consists of good amount of beans and legumes, citrus fruits and juices, whole grains, dark green leafy vegetables, poultry, pork, and fish. Food rich in folate is essential for proper development of baby during first three months of pregnancy. However, it is difficult to fulfill the daily requirement of folate from food alone so folic acid supplement given by the doctor should also be taken regularly. To fulfill the increased protein and calcium demand of pregnancy low-fat dairy products such as milk,

yogurt, cheese, and paneer should be consumed on daily basis. It plays a key role during the second and third trimesters, when baby's overall growth as well as bone and tooth development reaches its peak. Iron rich food such as red meat, pork and poultry, beans, dark green leafy vegetables, dried fruit such as raisins, dates and apricots and fruits such as apple, banana, pomegranate, and guava should be consumed in adequate amount to fulfill the requirement of iron during third trimester of pregnancy. There are certain foods which can hinder the baby's development and every pregnant woman should know about them. Eating fish during pregnancy is safe as long as it is not high in mercury content. River and pond fish are better than sea fish as sea fish may have high mercury content. Excessive consumption of tea, coffee, chocolates and all junk foods should be avoided. Consuming alcohol can cause serious problem during the pregnancy. It is best to avoid uncooked food, unpasteurized milk and milk products. Fruits and spices such as unripe papaya, pineapple, grapes, sesame seeds, fenugreek seed (methi seeds), fennel seeds and, ajinomoto should also be avoided during pregnancy.

STEPPING ON THE SCALE
The number on the scale helps you track your weight but not the composition of that weight. So it makes sense for you to do more than just weigh yourself to monitor progress. To weigh or not to weigh
So what is the most accurate way to track your progress? The answer is the weighing scales. However, standing on the scale can be an uncomfortable experience especially if you are overweight. For people who are trying to lose weight, or gain muscle or just maintain their weight, the scale can be both a friend and a foe. The problem is that some people weigh themselves daily and can obsess over the number on the scale. It can easily influence a person’s judgement about the effectives of their diet and workout and could drive them crazy. Don’t stress over the small stuff because this fitness lifestyle is a long term plan. Regardless of your goal, one of the easiest ways of tracking your progress is by weighing yourself regularly.
Losing weight is hard. It involves spending time at the gym and stopping yourself from eating your favourite foods. It is more often having to say “No” to food that make you happy in general. Kushal Shrestha, The Physique Workshop
Importance of weighing yourself
Photo Location: The Physique Workshop
Weighing yourself is important because it shows you if things are working or not. Fat and muscle weigh different. Losing fat will cause a decrease in body weight while building muscle will usually cause an increase in body weight. You need to weigh yourself regularly to ensure that what you’re doing is actually working. If your weigh isn’t moving in the direction of your goal, that’s a pretty good sign that your diet/workout isn’t working and needs to be adjusted.
40 SMART FAMILY JANUARY 2018
The problems with weighing yourself
• Weight is more than just fat and muscle
If your body was solely made up of fat and muscle, than weighing yourself regularly wouldn’t be a problem. However, that’s not the case because body weight changes as a result of loss or gain in fat/ muscle, food intake, poop and so on. This means daily fluctuations in weight is common.
• Weight alone tells us nothing about the composition of that weight
The number on the scale helps you track your weight but not the composition of that weight. So it makes sense for you to do more than just weigh yourself to monitor progress. In addition to weighing scales you should use measurements, pictures and mirrors. And you could even use your clothes and know if something was tight on you two months ago and now its loose is a tell-tale sign that you’re losing weight.
How often should you weigh yourself?
Everyday? Weekly? Monthy? Well, each frequency has its own pros and cons but taking all of the above into account and to avoid any unnecessary confusion, weighing yourself weekly would be the best choice. A weekly weigh in on the same day each week allows you to monitor your progress regularly while avoiding the anxiety you feel standing on the scale every day. Simply set a date on your calendar to weigh yourself and record your progress.
When’s the best time to weigh yourself?
Simply put, the best time to weigh yourself is first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything. Be sure to wear as little clothing as possible but if you do keep any clothing on be sure to wear that same amount of clothing every time to weigh yourself. This is simply because weighing yourself any other time other than first thing in the morning on an empty stomach will throw things off completely and destroy any sense of accuracy due to the reasons mentioned above (eating, drinking, pooping). More importantly, weighing yourself at random times “just to see” is stupid and potentially dangerous because it may drive you insane.
The 4 S’s of weighing yourself
When you weigh yourself, strive for sameness. Weigh yourself at the: • Same time of the day, • Same day of the week, • Same clothing, • Same scale It is recommended that you invest in a weighing scale and use it for consistency. Be sure to place it on a flat and hard surface for accurate reading.
Take Home Points
• Stick to weekly weigh in as it is simple and avoids confusion. • Weighing yourself first thing in the morning can give you an accurate readingof your weight before the daily fluctuations of weight change happen. • The scale shouldn’t be the only thing you use to monitor your weight. Use measurements, mirror, pictures and clothing. • Follow the 4 S’s of weighing yourself. • Your overall health is more than just the number on the scale. JANUARY 2018 SMART FAMILY 41

Relationship Menu
How would you describe your relationship with each other? Shradha: It’s pretty difficult to pinpoint our relationship in one word or a sentence, but in terms of giving advice and being supportive, we do that very well as our professions are in the same industry. If Shilpa has a project, we’re honest about our opinions. We tell her whether we like it or not, or whether she should take it or not. And, the same goes for Sakchhi and me. Shilpa: We’re very supportive of each other’s careers as our field of work can get a lot of criticism and judgmental eyes. We make sure to give our suggestions when any of us is making a big decision.

52 SMART FAMILY JANUARY 2018
Sakchhi: Both of them are more of a mother figure to me than they are sisters, especially Shradha as she’s more experienced as a makeup artist than me. I appreciate her efforts to become one without a proper degree or diploma, and I look up to her.
What was your first and most memorable memory of Shradha?
Shilpa: It was when I was in second grade and our parents were posted in a small village called Khandbari. They sent me to a hostel in Kathmandu with Shradha for my third grade study, and it was my first time living in a hostel in such a big city. I couldn’t sleep alone and the hostel was really strict, but I used
to sneak into her room at night. Back then, I used to talk to her informally which used to get me in trouble with the teachers as they pestered me to be more formal and respectful. I think that’s when I realized that I had an older sister looking out for me. Sakchhi: For me, it was when she took care of me when our parents were not around, like I said, Shilpa and she were more like mother figures in my life rather than sisters.
If you have sisters, you really don’t need best friends; they’re your, friends, support system, and everything. is a huge fan of Big Bang as well, and we went to a concert together during our time in the UK. Shilpa: Well, they both love doing makeup on me, so I’d say that’s a great bonding experience on its own.
Sakchhi: And we like to eat Do you fight a together. We love food. lot? What is it you usually about Describe each and how does it other in three end? words. Shradha: I wouldn’t say it’s a daily occurrence but we definitely have arguments from time to time, like any other siblings.
Shilpa: Shradha tends to get mad if we touch her makeup stuff without permission. And sometimes Sakchhi tends to do things her way despite us telling her otherwise, which gets us into heated arguments. Sakchhi: The fights usually happen with Shilpa. We used to lock each other in the cupboard or cut off each other’s hairs. These days it’s less childish and even if we do fight we talk the next day. We do not really hold grudges against each other for long.
What do you enjoy doing together?
Shradha: It is a bit unexpected, but we watch Korean dramas together when we have time. Shilpa
Shraddha: Shilpa is more of an introvert, quiet and reserved. Sakchhi is glamourous, straightforward and creative.
Shilpa: Friendly, understanding, stubborn for Shradha and fashionista, smart, beautiful for Sakchhi. Sakchhi: Goofy, clumsy and honest for Shilpa. Mom, bossy and talkative is for Shradha.
What do you admire about each other?
Shradha: I admire the fact that both of them are always confident in what they do and they’re always ready to take up a challenge. And if either of us is feeling a bit doubtful about our abilities, we try to motivate and support each other.
Shilpa: I really look up to Shradha’s talent, and her creativeness as a makeup artist. It’s honestly very commendable. And with Sakchhi, I envy her straightforwardness as sometimes I have trouble saying ‘no’ to people and I feel that if I were more like her, it would be easier on me. Sakchhi: We do what we love, especially both my sisters. Seeing them take on professions other people look down with so much confidence and effort really motivates me in particular to work harder.
One trait you dislike about one another.
Shradha: Shilpa’s dancing abilities at the club. Just the thought of going clubbing and dancing with her is intimidating. She’s a really good dancer. Also, both of them are the same size so they share clothes a lot, which I can’t do since my size is different. Sakchhi: The fact that they’re both older than me. I get bossed around a lot. Shilpa: Shradha’s a bit stubborn when it comes to certain things. It’s kind of hard to get through to her once her mind is set. And Sakchhi tends to be a bit too honest about her opinions sometimes.

THE NEW WAY OF SAVING Earning - Saving = Spending
“It’s not your salary that makes you rich, it’s your spending habits –Charles A. Jaff” So True! Text by Siddhartha Budhathoki, Officer Business Support, Laxmi Bank, Illustration by Sahaj Tamrakar
We have this love for the month beginning and out heart breaks right around the end. I am sure all of us can relate to this feeling. So, are we ever going to get over this or always whine about being Broke! Well, it all depends on us, majorly of our savings habit. Saving what’s left after all spending is now an old school thought, with the introduction of new product such as Recurring Deposit available in the Banks, saving is now simpler and structured, in a way it gives you the new freedom to save. So what is Recurring Deposit?
Recurring Deposit (RD) is an investment tool which permits those with an ability to make regular deposits earn higher/decent returns on their investment. Account holders choose a particular amount that gets invested on a monthly basis for the selected term that best suits their need. RD could be an excellent choice for many when you compare the factors that differentiate it to other traditional options.
Vs Savings Account
Higher Return: You get higher returns through RD account. The interest rate tends to be more in line with fixed deposits of similar terms which is always higher than interest on savings account. Guaranteed Return: Interest Rate get’s locked for the entire selected term of the RD scheme while interest on savings account are variable and could be subject to change based on change in market dynamics. Hence, you can lock the rate on your savings through RD and plan better knowing the return.
Multiple accounts: You can open more than one RD with the same bank. You can open different accounts for different purposes. Term: Most banks offer RD scheme with varied terms starting from 6 months. However, these schemes are popular with customers opting for longer terms of 3 to 5 year. Some banks even offer 10 year terms so there is great flexibility.
56 SMART FAMILY JANUARY 2018
Customization & Automation: Some banks make the monthly deposit process automated, where the system automatically transfers the selected amount each month to your recurring deposit account. Hence, you don’t have to worry about going to branch or keeping reminders to deposit funds. Also some banks allow you option to choose the date the funds get deposited. This will help you plan it around your salary day or based on your monthly cash flow nature.
Recurring Deposit (RD) is an investment tool which permits those with an ability to make regular deposits earn higher/ decent returns on their investment.
Savings Discipline: You can always access your savings account hence there is possibility of dipping into your savings for impulse purchases/expenses. The funds in RD are locked away so access to your funds is limited or at maturity meaning your savings are safe from your urge to spend.
Vs Fixed Deposit (FD)
Amount: You can start RD with a very nominal monthly amount in hundreds even. While most banks have 6 digit minimum balance (NPR 100K) requirement for opening fixed deposit accounts. This is another flexibility factor when compared to FD.
Being Curious is good,
ask questions to your bank before opening a Recurring Deposit Will the bank give you option to take out a loan against the balance available in your Recurring Deposit?
Can you premature or close your recurring deposit account? Banks don’t let you prematurely close this type of accounts easily. And like your fixed deposit even if they allow premature withdrawals there might be charges or penalty.
Similarly, you need to be aware of the consequences of missing your committed monthly investment amount. Banks might allow you grace period or other option to make the deposits. This could attract charges or some banks could allow this flexibility too. Summing it up all together Recurring Deposit can work best for many as it is a forced saving option where you automatically save monthly before you start spending your hard earned money. Further, this product promotes a savings habit among the general population which a fundamental step towards taking control of your personal finances and reaching your financial goals. Trekker’s Insurance has not yet had its chance to shine in the Nepalese insurance market. However, this insurance policy is an underdog that is rapidly graining importance amongst national as well as international trekkers. The numerous benefits of this insurance are incredible but before we discuss them, we need to know what this insurance is all about. Basically, a Trekker’s Insurance is just a modified version of the regular Personal Accident Insurance, which is an annual insurance policy that compensates us against event of injuries, disability or death caused solely by violent, accidental, external and visible events. The only difference is that Trekker’s Insurance covers us against the dangers that we might face during the course of our trekking. This insurance policy is applicable to anyone within the age range of 16 years to 60 years, regardless of nationality. For national trekkers, the insurance period is one year at maximum on both individual and group policy. Nevertheless, each trekking journey can only be for a maximum of ninety days. For international, trekkers, however, only individual policy issue is available that too for a maximum of only ninety days and a minimum of seven days. Trekker’s Insurance YOUR PARTNER IN MOUNTAIN HEIGHTS
As much of a fun as trekking is, we -- as wise beings -- should also be safe from the potential perils that trekking entails. Prajita Shrestha
58 SMART FAMILY JANUARY 2018
Another important thing about this insurance policy is that while all foreigners have to be named ahead of a trek, national trekkers can just give the name of the trekking route and the period of the trek right before the trek. And, all national trekkers, including Tour Guide, Assistant Tour Guide, High Altitude Sherpa, Cook, and Liaison Officer come under named insured people. Now that we have a fair degree of information about what Trekker’s Insurance is, we should understand that, this insurance, like all of the other insurance policies, has its own rules and limitations on the events it can cover. As of now, the events that
this insurance policy covers are as follows: • High altitude sickness • Frost bite • Death or injury due to blizzards There are a few events that are exceptions to this complex insurance policy but the policy has its own commendable share of benefits. When we are trekking at the highest altitudes in the world, we obviously more vulnerable than when we are at our home. Therefore, we need an extra layer of protection during the trekking period. After all, we want our trekking experience to be a success story and not a tragic news headline, don’t we? That is why we should make a smart move and get Trekker’s Insurance for our own and our loved ones’ benefits. As an insured person, there are entitled to benefits in three varied forms from the insurance company: Personal Accident Benefits, Medical Expenses Benefits, and Search and Rescue Benefits. Both domestic and foreign trekkers can be beneficiaries of these benefits, although the benefits might be a little different from each other.
Personal Accident Benefits
National Compensation provided in the following events: • Deaths • Permanent Total/Partial Disablement
After all, we want our trekking experience to be a success story and not a tragic news headline, don’t we?
• Temporary Total Disablement Compensation Amount: US $ 20,000 at maximum International Compensation provided in the following events: • Deaths • Permanent Total Disablement Compensation Amount: US $ 20,000 at maximum
Medical Expenses Benefits
National Compensation Amount: US$ 4000 at maximum International Compensation Amount: US$25,000, but can claim US$100 in each transaction if excess required.

The insurance company will take care of all the required bills incurred while making air search or while moving the injured insured from the site of injury to the nearest medical institution within Nepal. However, to receive this benefit, one of the hospitals, or nursing homes, or appropriate authorities has to certify that the rescue is mandatory to prevent the insured from the risk of immediate death. True Story
Time Management and Commitment The Key to Success Nothing is unattainable as long as you invest the right amount of time and dedication to the things that you want to achieve. Sirish Gurung is the perfect example of success through such effort. Rubik Joshi
Currently in his late teen, Sirish Gurung has achieved what most youths only dream of achieving at that young age. A competitive swimmer holding a national record, a proficient player of multiple musical instruments, and a student with good grades -- all these personas establish him as a role model amongst the Nepali youth. However, being a child prodigy comes at a cost, and he has had his fair share of bitter experiences while growing up. After a warm welcome, Sirish recalled for us the major events in his life while his mother looked at to him with pride and appreciation. The conversation with Sirish, narrated below in first person, took place in a room full of medals and trophies that solely belonged to him. When I was a kid, I used to be a troublesome child to my parents since I was full of energy and I used to run around places. Whether it be dance classes or football 60 SMART FAMILY JANUARY 2018

True Story
matches, I used to run away from all these activities. But, when it came to swimming it was kind of difficult to run away from the pool. So, my parents got me enrolled for swimming classes when I was about four years old. Since then I got involved in the training as well. My first trophy was handed to me when I was five years old; I was awarded as the best swimmer at a tournament held in Kirtipur. This actually happened after six months after my swimming classes, and the trophy motivated me in terms of training. And so, my interest in swimming grew stronger, and I started participating at inter-school tournaments as well. At seven years of age, I won a bronze medal for swimming in the under 10 category at the LA Cup which was held at Little Angels School. After that, I started to get more serious in my trainings, which were followed by participation in national tournaments. In 2008, Beijing hosted the Olympics. I saw my seniors get selected for the event and that propelled be to train harder. I was only ten years old back then, and since that day taking part in the Olympics became my primary goal. So, I put in more efforts in my training with the aim of participating in the 2016 Olympics, which I did. I guess I was eighteen years old by then. Before the Olympics, my friend Sophia along with me got scholarship offer to train in Thailand. This happened around 2015, the year Nepal got struck by a major earthquake. Swimming season was about to commence when the earthquake struck, and our training regimes were hampered. We couldn't go to training because obviously our life was at stake. That was when we got the offer and by the time we reached Thailand, we were out of shape. The first two months of training were hard since we were out of shape and the training routine was really difficult. We had to train four times a day and during those sessions we covered about 16 to 18 kilometers in the pool. So, after all those efforts the news of me being able to take part in the 2016 Olympics made me happy. When I got there, at the Olympics, the fact that this event takes place once in four years and a minor mistake can cost you the opportunity made me really nervous. Despite that, I was successful in breaking the national record in the 100 meter freestyle competition. I also got to meet many experienced personalities that I used to look up to from my computer screen. So, it's safe to say that I had a pretty good experience at the Olympics. I am really thankful towards my parents, because all of these achievements that I have achieved till date, should be credited to my parents. They never constricted their focus on my studies and got me involved in many extracurricular activities. They've been really supportive and they're the ones responsible for managing my training sessions and diet since my childhood. 62 SMART FAMILY JANUARY 2018
Sirish's mom added, "Well my son is a quick learner and that is one of the reasons why he was involved in so many activities. As a parent, we just supported his interests. In order to excel in something you have to be focused on that particular thing. That's what his coach suggested us as well. So he opted to swim." Sirish continues, "My principle in life is that time management is a very important factor in dealing with things in your life. My parents taught me the importance of time management and I still stick to that principle. I've witnessed many, including my parents, who consider sporting and any other activities as an obstacle in studies. In my school days I used to train in the evening, mostly for three hours - two hours of training and one hour for coming to and fro from the training. Most youths spend that amount of time on leisure activities such as using social media sites, watching TV, gossiping and many other unproductive activities. I just utilized that time to become this successful. I was always involved in different activities since a young age and I rarely got any free time. Then comes the part where I committed a lot of time to swimming. For me swimming was like a meditative journey. Before the Olympics, I have to admit that my social life was dead. Training was my primary concern and so I missed a lot of social occasions and friendly gatherings. I used to get the urge for all these thinks, but I somehow always put my focus on training. Breaking the national record at the Olympics somehow became a dream, an obsession, for me. That was one of the key driving factors in my journey towards the event. I never took training as a burden; instead I considered it as a routine part of my lifestyle. There were setbacks throughout my journey that I had to go through. Possessing such achievements at a young age even raised some envy and distaste among few people. My examination routines would sometimes collide with my swimming dates, and I had to convince my teachers to rearrange the dates which, sometimes, left them disappointed. I even got punished at times, at college, for missing out on classes due to my training regimes. Eventually, with good marks the teachers were content with my attendance. Personally, I myself want to excel more at what I'm currently doing in the sports field and I have friends who share the same desire as I do. But, here in Nepal, it is quite difficult to survive as a sportsperson. I think the lack of facilities, proper schedules, and infrastructure, and political, social, and economic issues hinder the progress of athletes. So, I'm looking at other options in order to continue my studies and plan out my future. Currently, I'm planning on joining a college for my bachelor degree after a break from my studies. I've achieved my goal, and now it's time for me to take another step towards a better career.

INSULATED WALLS AND WINDOWS Households today should invest in home insulation which is, an energy saving method to control temperature and humidity. Text by: Simran Dali, Illustration by: Sahaj Tamrakar
With most of the country to busy building earthquake resistant buildings, the general public has barely paid attention to the concept of thermal insulation. However, we see malls and big commercial buildings like hotel making use of insulated wall and windows because of their many advantages. There is no reason why they cannot be used in households.
If you choose to use insulated walls or windows when you build your house, it might initially put a slight dent in your pocket, but consider it a long-term investment. So what is insulation?
Thermal insulation in general refers to blocking or reducing heat transfer among two objects. Insulation lets you maintain desired temperature in your house throughout the year by protecting it against the harsh cold of winter and excess heat during summer. In terms of construction, insulation is limited to the roofs, floors, walls, windows, and doors of buildings. Of these, insulated walls and windows are the most commonly used forms of insulation in residential homes. Cement fibre with a plastic polymer material is one type of insulating material available at NSight Spaces in Teku. The other option is the acoustic wall panels that come under prefab category. Both these materials use green technology, thus making them environment friendly products. Insulated windows, on the other hand, is a booming product in the Nepalese market. The UPVC window profiles usually come in white, but are also available in a variety of other colors. Glazed with un-plasticized polyvinyl chloride, these windows are resistant to fire, strong winds and require virtually no maintenance.
Benefits of insulating your walls and windows
Save Money on Energy If you choose to use insulated walls or windows when you build your house, it might initially put a slight dent in your pocket, but consider it a long-term investment. The life period of materials such as cement fibres, and glass wall panels to last over a decade, even up to 15 years. Noise Reduction Putting a thermal insulation system in your home can help you keep your house peaceful and quiet. The extra insulated layers act as sound absorbing layers that keep noise levels low. This is especially useful if you have younger kids who love to scream and yell while playing in the house. Moisture Control The main concept behind insulation is to trap heat and reduce humidity inside the house. Fibreglass is a poor conductor of heat that allows heat to be trapped there is temperature gradient. Insulation also helps reduce condensation which in turn helps to lower the amount of moisture trapped on the walls after daily activities such as bathing, cooking and washing. Low moisture level reduces the chances of developing rotting and frozen patches on the walls. 70 SMART FAMILY JANUARY 2018

CLEANING HACKS with Everyday Tool Store bought cleaners are infused with chemicals that can affect the health of our family members. Simply cleaning with water for greasy spots and difficult stains most times seem impossible. We can use right natural ingredients for difficult stains on things. Text by: Rashmita Tuladhar, Illustration by: Sahaj Tamrakar
Cleaning can be a lifelong battle. Simply dusting off won’t do no magic, and simply using water won’t even solve half of your problems. To make cleaning process fast and effective, we often use chemical infused cleaners from the markets. These chemical infused cleaners bought from the supermarkets can leave residues that shorten the lifespan of the way the house hold items look.
Here useful and essential tips you can apply by using all-natural household ingredients to clean household items:
Salt
The magical ingredient for turning imperfection into perfection, this miracle element no matter what type you sprinkle into your favorite recipes, the same crystals can be used to clean carpet, copper dishes/equipment, and everything in between. The best part is that this ingredient is nontoxic and the most affordable on the list. • Clean copper, pewter, and solid brass: Cut a lemon in half and dab the cut surface with salt. Gently scrub the metal with half lemon dipped into salt all over before rinsing thoroughly with water. • Remove water rings on wooden tables: use paste of salt and vegetable oil. Let it sit for an hour before wiping away with a piece of clean cloth. • Remove bleach stains by mixing a quart of hot water with four tablespoons of salt, and then apply it to the yellowed area with a sponge until it fades away.
Lemon
This citric fruit is a cleaning powerhouse due to its acidic properties. It is a natural bleaching agent and deodorizer. Even their peels are as great source as their juice. Lemons and other citrus fruits are the ultimate degreasers! Furthermore, the combination of lemon and salt is just unstoppable! • Works as a natural fabric whitener: add one cup of undiluted lemon juice to your laundry to whiten and brighten your clothes. • Clean the interiors of your greasy microwave: add a few tablespoons of lemon juice to one cup of water in a microwave-safe bowl, then heat the mixture to boiling in the microwave. Allow the steam to penetrate baked-on grime for 10 minutes before opening the door and giving the interior a good wipe. • Remove unwanted smells from plastic food containers: soak them in lemon juice overnight. • Clean your wooden floors: mix one part undiluted lemon juice and two parts of olive oil into a spray bottle. Spray and wipe off with a soft cloth.
72 SMART FAMILY JANUARY 2018
White Vinegar
Vinegar is natural, and eco-friendly cleaner. It is a powerful solvent solution which contains about 5% acetic acid. Fill a spray bottle with the mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water (distilled is best). Spray it anywhere that needs good cleaning. • You can use it to clean chopping boards. • White vinegar plays the best roles as fabric softeners. They’re so much better than store- bought softeners. Add 1 cup of white vinegar to the rinse routine of your washing machine. • You can also use it to disinfect and deodorize medical equipment at home.
Baking Soda
This powdery white substance is the most convenient for those jobs that require extra-gentle scrape. • It is an effective antiviral agent and surfactant that eliminates grime and grease. • Works best to clean countertops, tubs, sinks, bathroom floors etc. • Dash a thin layer of baking soda all over your carpets, and then allow it to sit, overnight to reveal fresh, odor-free rugs. • Unclog drains by pouring some baking soda down the drain, and then slowly pour in some white vinegar until it foams. • Remove crayon marks left by your children.
Coca-Cola
Coke maybe the ultimate soft drink of all time but can also be used for cleaning besides just drinking. • Cleans the toilet: pour around the bowl, leave for a while then flush clean. • Remove marker stains from carpets: scrub with coke, and then wash away with soap water. • Removes rust: scrub with coke soaked cloth. • Clean burnt pans: soak for an hour, rinse away. • Clean your engine: coke distributors have been using this method for decades.

The dining room across the kitchen is a small space with chairs that had curvy neoclassical legs with fine detailed carvings and a couple of cupboards showcasing kitchen wares. It gives out a cozy impression through the warm lights coming from the center chandelier and other wall lights.

ALL NEW FORD ECO SPORT Stylish, Powerful and Connected Every inch of the All-New Ford EcoSport is designed to help you do more, get anywhere and make the most of your city life. With a bold new design, the EcoSport always looks like it’s ready for action, because it is. Shobhan Shrestha
I was truly content when driving the new EcoSport. Offering an upgrade to the previous model in all aspects, the new Ford EcoSport is back and it’s got some new tricks up its sleeve. The new EcoSport has been comprehensively redesigned with more than 1600 new parts, featuring rugged new looks, sleek interior makeover, a raft of ingenious technologies, and a new engine design offering more power and efficiency. The most visible change I noticed in the new Ford EcoSport’s design is on the front. The previous split unit is replaced by a new front chrome grille, thus making it look more robust and sportier than ever. Adjoining the grille are high-performance projector beam headlamps with chrome bezel which is mated with Daytime Running LEDs. The turn signals along with the new fog lamps are placed right under the headlights. The sides of the new EcoSport however remain the same as before; although the wheel arches host 16 inch titanium wheels which not only just look great, but are extra light and extra strong too. Also, the spare wheel at the rear has been retained. The most significant change in the facelifted Ford EcoSport is present under the bonnet. A brand new powerful, 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine replaces the previous four-pot. The new EcoSport's new 1.5-litre engine codenamed the 'Dragon' produces 123 PS at 6,500rpm and 150Nm of torque at 4,500rpm (for Petrol Engine), thus transforming each drive into a fun experience. The new power engine is paired with either a five-speed manual (which we drove) or a new six-speed automatic. Thus, the boosted and upgraded power and performance made driving and even sitting on the sides more thrilling and smooth. The new petrol Manual Ford EcoSport claimed a mileage of 17.00kmpl while the diesel unit claimed mileage of 22.00kmpl as per ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India). With features including six airbags, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), crash unlocking system and hill start assist, it is safe to say that the new EcoSport does not compromise on safety. Additionally, other safety features include high speed warning, defogger, Ford My Key, Traction Control System, Electronic Stability Control and Emergency Brake Assist. In addition to all this, one feature that really impressed me was the Smart Keyless Entry with Capacitive Sensors. Unlike other competitors, when going inside the vehicle, you don’t even have to take your keys out. The doors will automatically unlock when you go close to the vehicle with the help of Capacitive Sensors. Similarly, you just use your fingers when locking the doors outside. Going into the interiors, the all-black color scheme has been retained. However the biggest change you will see when entering the cabin is the new freestanding infotainment display that is placed right in the middle of the dash. The enhanced third generation of Ford’s Sync Setup offers the best in connectivity, entertainment and

information. Thanks to the large interface and touch points, it is hassle free and quite easy to use. It responds well to voice commands and can be used to make calls or small adjustments inside. The system supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with the former getting Siri. The system also connects to a 4-speaker audio system which is pleasing to the ear, thus helping to listen to some great music while tackling the busy jams of the valley. The auto climate control is also effective and overall, I quite enjoyed the fancy gadgets and technological upgrade inside. Behind the tilt adjustable steering wheel sits the new instrument cluster. The previous pod-like setup makes way for a more stripped down instrument binnacle. The multi-function display and the illuminated needles provide a welcome relief from the flat-black background. The steering responds well to inputs though isn't as sharp as before, and there is a bit of play at the center position which does feel rather odd, especially in a Ford. The suspension setup is now more flexible as well, and the improvement in ride quality is quite noticeable whenever you go over any rough patches of the road. The rear door opens up to disclose the 352-litre boot which becomes a vast 1,178 liters with the rear seats folded down. This in turn no longer allows the rear seats to recline but now fold down slightly (60:40 split). Furthermore, the rear legroom has been slightly altered from previous model with the front seats curved at the back thus making for comfortable leg space when commuting. Other features you will notice include a cooled glove box, electrically foldable ORVMs (Outside Rear View Mirror), engine start/stop button, front and rear power windows, 12v power source outlet and ambient lighting. Numerous storage options are also on offer including a cup holder, sunglass holder and deep door pockets. All in all, driving this in and around the city is quite a joy. Available in 7 different colors, the new Ford EcoSport is available both in Petrol/Diesel version as well in Manual/ Automatic Transmission. The starting price for this beauty is NRs. 33,90,000 and goes up to NRs. 49,90,000 depending on the different variants. Overall, the new Ford EcoSport’s all-round package is something that should attract customers willing to buy a new vehicle for them and their family.

Therefore it does not come as a surprise if someone tells you that even towels require special care and treatments sometimes. Have you ever asked the age-old question: “How I get my towels back to feeling and absorbing like a new one?” Or are you among those people who think towels will degrade with time and simply accept it as it is. Well everything depreciates over time, but that does not mean you have to step out of your shower and wrap yourself in a stiff and coarse towel!
Can you Trust Cartoons?
Gone are the days when you could see children playing outside for much of the day. Now, you tend to find most of them plastered to the screens if TVs, iPads, mobiles, and laptops. Children have curious minds and are always on the lookout to learn something new, and these days they find it in cartoons. They develop their fondness for cartoons for reasons such as: interesting characters (ranging from animals to people), colour scheme, mystical feel, humour, and wit.
CHOOSE, BUY AND PASTE WALLPAPERS!
It’s astonishing how a single drape of paper can turn your room from something that is simply okay to something that is eye-catching. No longer constrained by four matching walls and staid prints, wallpapers have so much to offer. In addition, they are replaceable and come in patterns, colors and effects that are beyond the realms of traditional painting.
