Meschenmoser Mr. Squirrel and the Moon Hardcover / $18.95 US On Sale Now ISBN: 978-0-7358-4156-7

Did you always want to be an artist?

Gordon and Tapir is mostly inspired by my own experiences living with other people in flats. There are classic spaces of confrontation like the kitchen, the living room or the bathroom. Everyone with a roommate has a completely different way of coping with everyday life. Everyone reacts differently to situations. It really sometimes gave me the impression that we are two different species using the same toilet. However, as opposed to Gordon, I never did find out where our toilet paper disappeared to . . .

I always wanted to be an illustrator of children’s books. However, it seemed that at German high schools to study illustration, you mainly had to work on computers and invent typography and stuff like that, and I realized that the only way I could draw and paint all day long was to study fine arts. So I decided to become an artist which luckily worked out quite well.

Are you a Gordon or a Tapir?

You recently visited the USA for your last book, Mr. Squirrel and the Moon. Did anything stand out from the trip? Did anything in America particularly inspire you with new ideas or stories?

I might be a bit of both. I even have two desktops in my working room. One belongs to Tapir and the other to Gordon. At the moment I’m sitting and writing at Gordon’s desktop, because I could not really find Tapir’s under a huge amount of letters, pencils, paper, etc . . . I think everyone changes from a Gordon to a Tapir depending on who you’re living with.

Of course, hanging out with the NorthSouth crew was the most outstanding experience! At the end of my trip I went to Yosemite which was really beautiful, but maybe most magical thing was watching a colony of elephant seals. They are able to produce burping and farting noises at the same time and I was very impressed. They were quite inspiring.

Are you a Gordon or a Tapir? Your books are very funny, and you’re a fan of classic comedy. Were any of the scenes in the book influenced by any films or specific jokes? Usually I use a lot of slapstick in my books. These are sometimes inspired by Chaplin, Keaton or the Marx brothers. In Gordon and Tapir there are only few references. But Tapir goes to work at the Berlin Zoo and has a little lunchbox in his hand which reminds me always of Chaplin having lunch in Modern Times.

Where did you grow up in Germany? Can you describe your childhood? I was born in Frankfurt, but grew up in a little valley at the river Mosel in a city called Bernkastel-Kues. We had a medieval city center and I could see the castle from my window. I had lot of vineyards and nature around and of course a forest. I actually had a very nice childhood and played outside and drew a lot.

A timeless tale A beautiful linen-bound classic edition of the story of Heidi. Heidi’s story is as fresh today as it was when it was written. It’s impossible not to love the little girl who scrambles through mountain meadows with the goats and Peter, brings joy (and soft rolls) to the blind grandmother, helps Klara learn to walk again, and restores hope and love to Grandfather. Illustrated with glowing watercolors by the internationally acclaimed artist Maja Dusíková, this beautiful classic is sure to become a favorite.

Johanna Spyri was born in 1827 in Hirzel, Switzerland. In 1852, she moved to Zurich, where she began to write stories about life in the country. Heidi’s Years of Wandering and Learning, usually abbreviated as Heidi, is by far the most well known. Published throughout the world, it has inspired more than twenty film or television productions, a musical drama, and a tourist area—Heidiland— in Switzerland. Johanna Spyri died in 1901.

Maja Dusíková was born in Piestany, Czechoslovakia, and now lives in Florence, Italy. One of the most celebrated children’s book illustrators in Europe, she has a pet rabbit named Cici that runs under her table while she paints and doesn’t like carrots.

The Tale of a Flying Mouse Torben Kuhlmann These are dark times for a small mouse. A new invention—the mechanical mousetrap—has caused all the mice but one to flee to America, the land of the free. But with cats guarding the steamships, trans-Atlantic crossings are no longer safe. In the bleakest of places the one remaining mouse has a brilliant idea. He must learn to fly!

Debut illustrator Torben Kuhlmann’s inventive tale and stunning illustrations will capture the imagination of readers—young and old—with the tale of this courageous young mouse.

Translated from the German by Suzanne Levesque. NorthSouth Books $19.95 (96p) ISBN 978-0-7358-4167-3 On Sale May 2014

The Rainbow Fish ISBN: 9781558580091 • 32 pages • Grades K-3

The Rainbow Fish is an international best-seller and a modern classic. Eye-catching foil stamping, glittering on every page, offers instant child appeal, but it is the universal message at the heart of this simple story about a beautiful fish who learns to make friends by sharing his most prized possessions that gives the book its lasting value. An IRA-CBC Children’s Choice, Christopher Award winner, and American Bookseller ABBY winner.

Publisher’s Weekly Starred Review ★ In a project that seamlessly blends elements of a picture book, comic, and novel, gifted newcomer Kuhlmann imagines that the world’s first transatlantic flight was made not by Charles Lindbergh, but by an intrepid German mouse flying in the opposite direction, starting from Hamburg. Driven to desperation by the deaths of many of his compatriots in newly invented mousetraps, the mouse decides to head for America: “A huge statue greeted all who arrive there, whether human or mouse.” Squads of guardian cats rule out ship journeys, and the mouse begins experimenting with flying machines. Kuhlmann makes every detail of the mouse’s endeavor look and sound delightfully plausible, from his da Vinci–like working sketches to his plan to hoist his plane to the top of a tower by attaching it to the gears of the tower’s clock. The fragility of his machine and the owls that watch him like sentinels at every step give the story constant tension: the owls’ golden eyes are painted with eerie menace. It’s all terrific entertainment, and the fame Kuhlmann imagines for the mouse when he finally succeeds (“The Transatlantic Rodent Hero” trumpets a billboard) inspires a future famous aviator—or so Kuhlmann claims. An exceptionally fine debut. Ages 4–up. (May)

My Grandma's a by Todd Tarpley, illustrated by Danny Chatzikonstantinou 40 pages, $17.95 trim: 8.5" x 11" ISBN: 978-0-7358-4199-4

Ethan’s grandma is a little different. In fact, she’s a ninja!

Ethan becomes the hit of the school— as quick as a zip line—the moment his grandma drops from the ceiling and teaches the kids karate moves. That is, until her power kick deflates his team’s soccer ball. Why’d you have to bring your ninja grandma! But could hanging around a ninja have its benefits? The big game is coming, and Ethan is about to find out in this hilarious story that is anything but ordinary.

About the Author: Todd Tarpley lives in a magical kingdom called

New York City, inside a teeny-tiny castle, with a beautiful princess, two ninja sons, and a menagerie of barnyard animals. His previous picture books include Ten Tiny Toes and How About a Kiss for Me? You can visit him at toddtarpley.com.

About the Illustrator: Danny Chatzikonstantinou was born in 1973. He

illustrates children’s books and sometimes writes the words, too. He learned his craft by drawing on napkins at first. Later on, he moved to sketch pads and notebooks. Now he has a full set of sharpened pencils and tons of blank drawing paper that he never uses because he moved back to napkins again. Danny is a self-taught artist who lives and works in Athens, Greece.
