The New River Valley has an incredible amalgamation of businesses which are major contributors to the strength of the local economy and bring growth, innovation, creativity and job opportunities. Across ten years now, New River Valley Magazine has profiled many diverse entrepreneurs and businesses and has stepped out to highlight several of them in this inaugural issue of NRV Business Yearbook 2016. Each business showcased here is proud enough of its history, people, products and services that the owners or managers have deemed buying a place in this new publication to be valuable. Many have loyal clients and customers, and because small business can quickly respond to changes in the economic climate, they can persevere through tough times and often expand during boom years. Each municipality within the New River Valley values its business enterprises and strives to walk alongside them for clarity in regulations that govern issues faced by commercial endeavors. 4

www.nrvmagazine.com

Consumers who patronize NRV Business Yearbook 2016 participants are essentially placing their hard-earned dollars right into the local economy. While statistics vary, more than half of the money spent at a local business circulates in the local area. According to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a commercial street in any town is a “reflection of community image, pride, prosperity and level of investment.” Protecting a community’s character and vitality is a civic responsibility of every resident. The impressive variety and distinctive quality of businesses, entrepreneurs, managers, employees, products and services prompted the plan for this new, annual publication. Each one of these business owners and their staff are eager to serve the public and share their story with New River Valley residents. Enjoy!

New River Valley Business Overview

YEARBOOK

The entrepreneur in the New River Valley is older than the Declaration of Independence. Consider the tanner, trapper, wainwright and cooper. Men and women like Benjamin Franklin, Biddy Mason, Henry Ford and the majority of entrepreneurs through World War II went into business with an idea, some common sense and a healthy dose of determination. Or foolish optimism. Angels were still in dreams, and venture capitalists were few and far between. The gargantuan 20th century successes of Bill Gates and Michael Dell might influence some of today’s youth to abandon a college education in favor of pursuing a passion. While a college degree may not guarantee success by every measure, it illustrates the kind of perseverance and commitment one needs in business. Operating a business is challenging, frustrating, rewarding, discouraging, demanding and stimulating all at once. There are moments of exhilaration and days of despair. But with vision, motivation, critical thinking, flexibility, innovation, leadership skills, self-confidence and a positive, multi-faceted location like the New River Valley, success can be achieved. Of the many desirable characteristics of a business location, a few stand out as 2016

essential for the kind of prosperity that shows up on the bottom line: Quality of life ~ The New River Valley excels in this category for a broad range of entertainment and the arts, educational opportunities, natural beauty and recreation, low crime rates, multi-cultural population, Appalachian heritage and contemporary advancement. Business sites ~ Industrial parks, rental space, commercial condos, land for development, high tech office complexes, home-based and cottage industries, shops, incubator space and warehouses are available throughout the NRV in various sizes, locations and configurations. Transportation ~ Receiving supplies and materials, as well as moving finished products down the street, out of the region and around the world is paramount for products to reach destination markets. Four lane access eastwest via U.S. 460 and north-south on I-81, along with three airports within an hour bode well for business. Workforce ~ The labor pool throughout the New River Valley includes everyone you need from the factory worker, day laborer N R V B u s i n e s s Ye a r b o o k

and temp to highly-skilled IT and healthcare professionals, office specialists, sales clerks and soda jerks. Loyalty and integrity are hallmarks of NRV employees. Climate ~ Mild summers with an average July high of 83Âş and comfortable winters which offer a 20Âş average low in January contribute to a delightful, 4-season climate. More than half the days in a year are sunny. Approximately 40 inches of rainfall and less than two feet of snow contribute to the lush greenery and responsive gardens. Sustainability ~ Efforts to be environmentally-sensitive and create harmony between businesses, people, land and animals are avidly embraced throughout the New River Valley. Recycling and repurposing are valued in both business and residential life. Community Spirit ~ Generations of families, along with college students who could not bear to leave the NRV and others who have chosen to move here enjoy and take pride in the region. It is a fantastic place to live, work and play, and for that reason, businesses find great opportunity, wonderful employees and incredible support from municipalities and officials. 5

An 89 year Legacy of Insurance in Blacksburg

I

It has been 89 years since Leonard L. Brown (VT Class of 1923 and proud to serve in the Corps of Cadets) started his insurance business in downtown Blacksburg. Leonard’s wife, Lucille, worked in the office, and their son, John, came into the fold after serving in the U.S. Army. Just over two decades after opening, in 1951, Norma Lucas Hill, then a high school student, began as a parttime secretary and is still a vital part of the agency more than 60 years later. In 1958 Cooper Via joined the agency after graduating from Virginia Tech and led the company as president for 18 years. A few years later in 1966, Hill’s sister, Harriet Lucas Albert, followed her to the agency. Over the years, the Brown, Via and Lucas families have been integral in the agency’s success and longevity. Now, the agency leadership is made up of second and third generation members of the original three families. Tommy Via cut his teeth in the industry after graduating from Virginia Tech in 1979. Christy Brown, also a Hokie and the founder’s granddaughter, has been part of the team since 2002. Nancy Via, third generation in the agency from the Via family, joined in 2005 a month after her graduation from Virginia Tech. Melanie Eads, a life-long resident of the New

Leonard Brown, T. Cooper Via, John Brown, Norma Hill and Harriet Albert

River Valley, came to the agency in 2011 and joins the agency leadership going forward. Along the way, Brown Insurance purchased four other New River Valley insurance agencies and has grown to one of the most well-known names in insurance in the region among businesses and residents. As a Keystone Insurers Group Agency Partner, the agency is held to the highest in ethical, financial and underwriting standards. Being affiliated with Keystone means that Brown Insurance remains independent while having resources of the second largest agency partnership in the US as ranked by the 2014 property and casualty revenue by the Insurance Journal . What this really means in 6

everyday language is that Brown Insurance has the buying power and contracts of a large corporation but retains the small-town intimacy of a locally owned and operated business. Clients with Brown Insurance can pick and choose from several areas of insurance and be advised by a seasoned agent as to the best value. These independent agents will steer you in the right direction, interpret industry jargon and explain the details so you know about your policy and coverage available in these areas: w Business w Auto w Homeowners /renters w Life insurance w Health & Medicare w Bonds w Flood & Earthquake w Personal umbrella w Boats / other vehicles Brown Insurance’s personnel longevity and family values are a testament to the business, decade after decade. The greatest compliment coveted and treasured at Brown Insurance is when one of the customers refers a friend, neighbor or colleague.

Giles County

The same, rugged, pioneer spirit that settled Giles County in the 18th century thrives in the hearts and dreams of workers, independent business owners, corporate executives and entrepreneurs who choose to lay roots in Virginia’s Mountain PlaygroundTM. Natural beauty in the valleys, forests, rivers and mountaintops draws people to Giles. This same landscape is what keeps locals here all their lives or draws them back; motivating them to find work, pursue careers and start or relocate a business. Residents embrace and enjoy a high quality lifestyle where simplicity meets technology, and both flourish throughout the small towns and countryside. Virginia is among the top 10 states for lowest sales and local taxes, and property and business taxes are modest. With four distinct, though mild, seasons, utility expenses and cost-ofliving are among the most reasonable in the country. Giles County officials welcome and encourage all businesses from the momand-pop and solopreneur to the high tech 8

corporation and Fortune 500 presence, like General Electric, Celanese and NanoSonic, Inc. The county embraces preservation and sensible environmental stewardship along with entrepreneurial ventures and companies in myriad industries. Developing business parks and creating harmony among development and commercial enterprises has been front and center of Giles County’s innovative approach. Wheatland Eco Park is a stellar example of implementing technology and growth in the most sustainable fashion. Current industrial and office uses will be blended with residential and mixed-use facilities, expanded walking trails and strategically-planned construction for the least footprint as possible as the park expands. Other business clusters are home to manufacturing, medical, healthcare and consulting services. Giles is especially supportive of cottage industries and home-based businesses, as well as commercial enterprises, and here are some of what is found in this county: N R V B u s i n e s s Ye a r b o o k

• consulting • photography, writing • media and film services • food and restaurant • jewelry design • vodka products marketing • fine furniture • wholesale and retail • handmade banjos • nanotechnology and high tech • mining • antiques • farming • real estate • healthcare • banking and insurance • manufacturing • outfitters • hospitality • and more The outdoor recreation industry supports more than 6 million jobs and generates some $645 billion in annual 2016

revenue nationally with a generous slice of that in Giles County. The New River flows 37 miles through the county with depths from a few inches to 100 feet and fish of many species. Rafting, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, camping, paddleboarding and the popularity of water activities have prompted the New River Water TrailTM and associated initiatives to capitalize on the beauty and recreation opportunities. Outfitting businesses specialize in guided tours, tube and boat rentals, fishing expeditions, ziplining and forest ropes and bridges, whitewater rafting, cabin rentals and several water-related enterprises. Giles is Virginia’s Mountain PlaygroundTM. Small businesses prosper in little towns and hamlets as well as outlying regions, and many of their products and services may be found around the globe. Buckeye Banjos are played in the hands of well-known musicians, and collectors crave handcrafted Kentucky long rifles and unique silver bullet jewelry made in Giles. The hospitality industry is well-represented in lodging and restaurants including an upscale B&B, historical mountain resort and motels that attract Appalachian Trail thru-hikers half the year. Farming businesses include fresh produce, organic flowers, fish, pork, chicken and beef products. Many of the Giles County restaurants take pride in serving locavore and using locally-sourced produce in season, changing menus to capitalize on the freshest ingredients. Farmer’s markets offer farm-to2016

table produce, and Monticello Tea & Spice Company delivers to restaurants all over the region. Giles County’s largest employer, Celanese, opened its manufacturing plant on Christmas Day in 1939 and continues to be the county’s largest employer, with generations of families holding career-long jobs. It provides employment to more than 1,000 people and has recently invested $150 million dollars locally. General Electric and Appalachian Power have a presence and work force in Giles County connected to power and mining. The Improved Structure Firefighting Glove was developed through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in partnership with Giles County’s NanoSonic and Shelby Specialty Gloves. This glove is a combination of traditional materials and NanoSonic’s HybridShield® insulated materials which are water-repellent as well as heat- and punctureresistant. The workforce here is grounded in commitment, integrity and loyalty, and companies find all levels of skills and creativity among the populace. As employees give their all in the workplace, neighbors as well keep an eye out for one another and embrace the rich heritage that resides in a foundation of goodness and benevolence. Healthcare and local resources are abundant for all. U.S. 460 slices through Giles County and links to I-77 to the west and I-81 to the N R V B u s i n e s s Ye a r b o o k

east in less than 30 minutes. Three airports less than an hour away provide commercial services that transport people, merchandise and product components. Three major utilities provide high speed broadband to most of the county, and four business parks have stable occupants with room for growth. Manufacturing has long been at the heart of the Giles County economy and continues to play a major role in the economic landscape. in here Giles County is one of those places that beckons you to stay and make your home with us. Recreation is as abundant as jobs and business opportunities in the region. The superb combination of natural resources and beauty, Appalachian heritage, business friendly municipalities and genuine people creates an environment for success.

For some, it’s the atmosphere and memorabilia ~ Marilyn Monroe, Superman, old movie posters, full size carousel horses, ‘56 Chevy convertible, autographed guitars, a 2-story tall tyrannosaurus rex, framed cereal boxes and movie stars, pop culture memorabilia and a strong local presence in Virginia Tech, Radford University and NRV photos and things. For others, it’s the four annual promotional events like green beer for St. Patrick’s Day, Christmas celebration, Halloween spooky specials or some exotic summer theme. Each seasonal occasion has its own custom-designed Macados pint glass and tee shirt -- different ones every year. Macado’s has the appeal for all ages. This is a college hangout, a family fun restaurant, a senior walk down memory lane or a teen’s introduction to Clark Gable 10

or King Kong. The booths make perfect little business deal kind of cubicles. For everyone, it is, as their own ad says: Good Brew and Great Food. Couple that with excellent service, convenient locations, long hours and simply a fun place to be, and Macado’s shines on all fronts. Macado’s has become somewhat of an institution in the region since Richard Macher, a New Jersey native, opened the first one in Roanoke in 1978. His idea was fairly straightforward: To bring northernstyle deli sandwiches to Southwest Virginia. Mission accomplished ~ and so much more ~ with 18 locations in four states, three of them right here in the New River Valley. The deli sandwiches Macher created for Macado’s number in the dozens and sport interesting names of American West lore and famed names like: N R V B u s i n e s s Ye a r b o o k

l Dr. Watson l The Lone Ranger l Julius Caesar l Bonnie and Clyde l Sherlock Holmes l Babe Ruth l Mona Lisa l Tonto l Rin Tin Tin l ... and more. The restaurants were in business well over 30 years before a hamburger found its way on the menu in the Gourmet Burger section, which includes the Wild Bill Burger and Blues Brothers Burger. Salads, appetizers, quesadillas, gourmet dogs, wraps, Reubens and tacos are offered daily. Chicken mac & cheese, lasagna supreme, chicken parmesan and chicken broccoli Alfredo round out the short Entrees list and 2016

if for some strange reason, you do not find your favorite combo, then the Build Your Own is for you. Choose your foundation (bread), theme (meats), bells and whistles and top it off to your satisfaction. Cookies deserve their own paragraph. You may not even find them on the menu, but Macado’s is one of the few restaurants that understands the value of a cookie. Not only that, but they go above and beyond, serving them slightly warmed for that unparalleled fresh-from-the-oven texture with a dollop of whipped cream.

In an industry where employee turnover ranks highest in the nation, Macado’s attributes its success in great part to its people. Many have been working at one of the restaurants for 20 years or more, and now there are many second-generation employees. Since

1978, many of the original locations have moved, new locations have been built and menus have changed, while a significant staff component has remained constant. N R V B u s i n e s s Ye a r b o o k

Another measure of success is that moving of locations, renovating, changing menu items and staying contemporary for mass appeal. Change in business must balance with tried-and-true, and Macado’s manages to achieve staying the same where it matters and ramping up whatever is needed to keep up with the times.

We have all had experiences in our lives that have compelled us to take action and to make changes in our own lives, but how many of us have had such a profound experience that we impacted an entire community? Meet Donna. At six years old, Donna experienced a life changing event that many never will experience: abandonment. Her dad left her on the door step of her school one morning, waiting alone for the door to open. That day, a wave was set into motion that would impact many families for years to come throughout the New River Valley. Donna knew that no child should ever feel alone or abandoned for any reason. That morning, The Adventure Club seed was planted and has been nourished ever since. Donna believes every child deserves caring people in their lives who want the best for them; that children need people who are excitedly waiting for them. She is passionate about intentional engagement, exceptional experiences, and safe places for young children to thrive. Donna Thornton-Roberts has cultivated many new concepts and companies, from Tiny Tots Day Care Center, Christiansburg’s first state licensed childcare center in 1976 to her latest childcare center, Grace a Child USA which is currently expanding to a brand new center just below the Christiansburg High School. She now trains other executives at a national level so that she can impact, educate, and nourish as many lives as possible. Donna holds a BS in Management of Human Resources, a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, and will receive a Doctorate in Christian Leadership in December 2016. Donna Thornton-Roberts

The Adventure Club is now 26 years strong! Planned activities ranging from yoga and face painting to team games and crafts are always waiting for children before and after school at six Montgomery County Elementary Schools. The program’s Chief Executive Officer is Tara Marciniak, a Virginia Tech graduate with eclectic backgrounds in English, architecture, tutoring, and curriculum implementation. She came to the company by a referral through a colleague at Sylvan Learning Center. She has been honored to infuse new ideas into an already thriving and exciting company. This year the children are “traveling” around the world by painting flags, building masterpieces, playing group games from different countries, trying out new foods, and reading together. The Adventure Club works closely with well over a dozen companies in the New River Valley who want to educate the children in areas like: architecture, yoga, karate, cooking, planting, and more! Also new to the program is The Adventure Club’s Mascot: Ollie the Owl! The children are excited to have the opportunity to take Ollie home to visit their families each weekend. Ollie has been lucky enough to have shared so many new experiences with the children: from visits to the doctor, to tours of recycling centers, to rides on tractors, horses, and even an airplane! Families love to take pictures of Ollie with their kiddos. Pictures are shared on The Adventure Club’s facebook page: www.facebook.com/cccstac, are voted on, and winning images earn gift cards and tuition credits! This state licensed program offers consistent before and after school care, occasional care, summer camps and care for families who need to go through the Department of Social Services for tuition assistance.

Cognizant of everyone’s time and energy, the sales team at New River Nissan keeps the process smooth and streamlined from first introduction to waving good-bye, as the owner drives away in a newly purchased vehicle. But, it’s not really good-bye, as the service staff will do its best for maintenance and service on each vehicle sold here. 16

From its inception in 2007, Natalie Siegel set out to create a different kind of consignment shop. Eight years and more than 1,800 consignors later, she knows this is the kind of consigning experience people want. The merchandise is clean and in showroom condition, the shop smells fresh, and the music is soothing. Consignors feel good about passing on treasured heirlooms, knowing they will be beautifully displayed and, more importantly, sell. Upscale Attic customers are thrilled to discover a whole “new” store each time they visit, as more than 300 items arrive weekly, and pieces only stay on the floor three to four months. Furniture photos are posted on Facebook, and Natalie and her friendly staff are constantly creating new vignettes, making it easy for shoppers to picture a piece in their home.

Carilion New River Valley Medical Center

A strong health care system is, in many ways, a reflection of the community that it serves. The New River Valley is a region known for its vast outdoor amenities, array of nationally ranked educational institutions and rich cultural heritage. Such a diverse region necessitates a health care system that can keep up with its medical needs and partner with its communities to foster values of health and wellness. Carilion Clinic strives to be that organization. Carilion is a not-for-profit health care organization that provides quality care for nearly one million Virginians. Headquartered in Roanoke, Virginia, it consists of a comprehensive network of hospitals, primary and specialty physician practices and other complementary services. Carilion is also home to the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. System wide, Carilion employs 1,000 physicians representing more than 70 medical specialties. In the New River Valley, Carilion specialists have multiple offices, allowing patients the convenience of seeing a doctor near them. These specialties include cardiology, vascular, 20

gastroenterology, orthopaedics, podiatry, obstetrics and gynecology, physiatry, urology, general surgery and ear, nose and throat. In an effort to inspire the region to grow stronger, Carilion also partners with Virginia Tech to advance care through medical education and research, opening the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute in 2010. “Our mission is to improve the health of the communities we serve,” said Nancy Howell Agee, Carilion’s president and CEO. “We’re part of the community, providing a network of support that goes well beyond our walls. Whether it’s helping to train the doctors of the future or offering specialized care close to home, we’re here for you.” While Carilion has an expansive network of medical resources, services and physicians, its proactive approach to care is what ties it all together. Carilion encourages individuals to partner in their own health, ultimately facilitating healthy lifestyle changes community-wide. This personalized approach begins at the primary care level.

N R V B u s i n e s s Ye a r b o o k

PRIMARY CARE There are a number of primary care options available in the New River Valley, including 13 family medicine practices. Once individuals find a primary care provider that is right for them, Carilion doctors encourage continued communication with the patient, both through traditional means and by using MyChart, a secure online portal where patients can review their medical records, receive test results, and message directly with a physician or care coordinator. Many Carilion primary care locations are also certified as patient-centered medical homes, meaning that patients are provided with comprehensive care from a multidisciplinary team. This innovative approach ensures that a patient’s overall health needs are met – not just the particular needs the patient has at the time of a checkup. For a patient who is fairly well, this approach aims to keep them healthy so they do not need more advanced medical intervention in the future. For those who have chronic conditions, it is about focusing on patient engagement 2016

and helping to manage those conditions together. For a patient with an advanced disease, this approach helps him or her to navigate all of the medical resources available. Seeing over 90,000 primary care patients in the New River Valley this past year, Carilion aims to not only encourage wellness at the individual level, but within entire communities. COMMUNITY OUTREACH Community health educators lead or participate in hundreds of events including blood drives, health screenings, cooking demonstrations, fitness presentations and other awareness events every year. In 2015, Carilion’s health educators reached more than 13,500 people in the New River Valley. Their programming targets specific health needs in unique communities and provides participants the tools they need to make healthy changes in their life. WELLNESS Carilion also practices what it preaches, incorporating wellness facilities into its amenities. With four Carilion Wellness locations across southwest Virginia, its newest is set to open in the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center in Blacksburg in early April 2016. Each center 2016

provides members of all ages with high quality athletic and wellness opportunities. From Fitness on Demand classes to complimentary health screenings, Carilion Wellness serves as a one-stop-shop for proactively achieving wellness goals. HOSPITALS Still, no matter how effective preventative care and wellness programs are, people in the New River Valley will need to visit a hospital. Carilion works to make that transition to hospital care as easy as possible, offering two accessible locations in the NRV. Carilion New River Valley Medical Center, just off Interstate 81 near Radford, is the leading health care provider in the New River Valley, and it anchors a medical center complex that includes a modern hospital facility with advanced diagnostic and medical care, a Level III Trauma center, an emergency department, two heliports and Carilion Clinic Saint Albans Hospital for psychiatry and behavioral medicine. Up Route 460 from Montgomery County, Carilion Giles Community Hospital is located in Pearisburg, serving primarily Giles and Monroe W.Va. counties. With an expert staff offering 24/7 emergency care, advanced diagnostic procedures, minimally invasive surgery, nuclear medicine studies and comprehensive rehabilitation N R V B u s i n e s s Ye a r b o o k

programs, this 25–bed hospital also provides advanced cardiac testing, imaging studies, rehabilitation services and a diabetes management program. VELOCITY CARE For urgencies that are not emergencies, Carilion also offers VelocityCare locations in Blacksburg and Christiansburg to meet the New River Valley’s urgent care needs. This is just another way that Carilion is working to reduce travel and wait times for patients. “We work within our communities to offer accessible, quality health care,” explained Bill Flattery, Vice President for Carilion Clinic’s Western Region, which includes Carilion Giles Community Hospital as well as Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. “Our doctors and nurses are focused on providing the best care to our patients, and often enough, those patients are our neighbors.” Whether an individual is in need of a regular wellness checkup or emergency medical attention, Carilion is there for them. It is an organization invested in its communities because it is part of its communities, and it is proud to provide the best quality care to its neighbors in the New River Valley. New River Valley Intellectual Property Law protects intellectual property (IP). Intellectual Property is an important asset for a company, an asset that contributes to market share, the bottom line and the overall value of a business. In 1973, Janice Anderson was faced with a daunting task of helping her daughter utilize her very limited hearing. Nearly 45 years later, that endeavor has resulted in Anderson’s helping to enhance the hearing of countless others, as she now owns four Anderson Audiology Hearing Aid Sales and Service offices throughout Southwest Virginia. Though proud of her company’s growth, the Snowville native admitted it wasn’t always in her plans. She had planned on being a stay at home Mom. In 1972, Anderson’s daughter, Karla, was born in Germany. During the long flight home, many people on the plane became ill. Once home, Karla ran a really high fever, which Anderson now believes caused her daughter’s hearing loss at the age of three months. With frequent sickness during Karla’s first year of life, questions about her hearing were not addressed until the age of 12 months. The evaluation diagnosed her with profound hearing loss. Anderson immediately sought to increase her own knowledge of hearing loss and hearing aids. Starting with a mailorder correspondent’s course, eventually she took a sign language course through New River Community College. She began to explore technology to help Karla, though her earliest experience with hearing aids wasn’t very pleasant. “The first person to fit my daughter did not give any confidence,” Anderson said. “I remember going out to the car and crying and thinking there’s got to be a better way to do this.”

Anderson did find a better way when she met Luther Repass, who founded what was formerly Hearing Aid Sales and Service in Dublin in 1963. Repass fit Karla with binaural hearing aids that allowed her to hear some basic drum sounds. More importantly, Mr. Repass provided Anderson with a unique way of paying for the purchase – working alongside him in the hearing aid business. The decision to accept Repass’ offer changed the course of Anderson’s life, eventually leading to her taking over the company in 1990, re-branding it Anderson Audiology in 1996 after obtaining her Masters in Audiology, and later her doctorate from the University of Arizona in 2004. In 2002, Dr. Anderson’s son, Darrell Anderson came on board as a Hearing Aid Specialist and an office was opened in Galax to join the satellite office opened in Wytheville in 1999. In 2008, Dr. Tina Proffit was brought on board to work in the Galax office and Darrell opened the Wytheville office full time. In 2011, Marie Church was brought on board as an audiologist for the new Christiansburg office. With our supporting staff, Kecia Furrow, Lisa Koger, April Edwards, Heather Cunningham and Amy Byrd, coordinating our patient care and keeping the offices running smoothly, we all work to give everyone that comes in the door the best Anderson Audiology Experience. The Anderson Audiology Experience is evident in each of the office’s welcoming atmosphere, compassionate care and professional expertise of each of Anderson Audiology’s employees. Each office is equipped with the most modern equipment including video otoscopes allowing the patient to observe the condition of the ear canal and eardrum as well as Verifit equipment allowing hearing aid fittings to be as precise as possible. Patient care with Old Fashion Service with the most modern technology has been the motto for Anderson Audiology since the beginning.

Bringing more than a decade of law practice experience back to his home state and home county of Giles, Jason Buckland traveled full circle from Giles County schools to Virginia Tech (class of 1999), out of state and back again. He opened Buckland Law Firm’s office in 2015 in Pearisburg to provide legal services for people and businesses in the New River Valley region. As a partner and litigator in a North Carolina firm for several years, Jason was instrumental in presenting cases which involved intricate civil matters for businesses and/or owners, employees or officers. Noteworthy for its pewter gray stone exterior and location in center of downtown across from the Giles County Courthouse, Jason found the layout and design of the circa 1906 structure to be the perfect conduit to house his new law firm.

Jason’s easy-going, approachable personality sets people at ease from the first meeting, and his broad experience in precedents, documentation and court presentations in state and federal courts gives him a unique perspective on business and family law. He has received accolades on several occasions for business litigation. Pearis Mercantile

T

The entrepreneurial spirit is a unique character trait that, if you have it, can only be concealed for so long. It even runs in some families. Lee and Anne Wheeler come from a long line of entrepreneurs in Giles County going back some four generations, so opening Pearis Mercantile in May of 2014 was a natural venture for them. “We renovated my dad’s old gas station for the shop,” Anne relates. “He was a businessman with an interest in several Pearisburg enterprises, including Timberlake Hardware and Building Supply. Lee’s family were merchants in Narrows, operating Wheeler Furniture for nearly a century.” “Basically, I flunked retirement,” quips the retired high school teacher turned merchant / entrepreneur. Her husband still practices as a dentist in Narrows and is equally as excited about the store. Pearis Mercantile evolved using the term from Latin for merchant and the Latin

verb mercari meaning “to trade”, the word mercantile often connotes a general store with a unique cadre of merchandise. According to one local customer: “I feel like I’m walking into a wonderland of unique gifts and shopping ideas.” Indeed, if you need a gift, this is your kind of shop. Jewelry, stationery, candles and stuffed animals are always in style. Home and garden products run the gamut from functional and necessary, even if you cook or garden small-scale, to decorative, colorful and interesting. Toss pillows, wreaths, floral accent pieces, little signs and alluring and amusing things can add a splash or seasonal flair to any decor. Remember, you can be the gift buyer and recipient; nothing wrong with treating oneself from time to time. More than 35 artisans and craftspeople display their wares, featuring handcrafted art, stained glass, jewelry, hand weaving, appliqué, fine photography, flags,

banners and birdhouses. “Showcasing local and regional talent and creativity is very rewarding for both us and our customers,” Anne states. On the practical side, the Appalachian Trail hiker or anyone else can pop in for a pair of socks, water bottle, flashlight, batteries, lamps, maps and general supplies. Hikers are not the only ones who need a handy source of common gear year-round. Christmas is a special season with extended hours and a fabulous variety of ornaments and seasonal decorative and useful items. Pearis Mercantile draws from well over 50 miles in every direction, and they travel to gift and retail trade shows and meet sales reps in the store to seek out inventory that’s unusual, curious, intriguing, attractive, refreshing and affordable. It’s a oneof-a-kind place, worth the drive for the experience.

Credit the cowboy hat for this new small business. Bennett Teates founded the Blacksburg start-up, Suggestion MailBox, which is helping businesses improve relationships with their customers by making it easy for a client to submit ideas, tips, comments and suggestions. Bennett likes to wear his cowboy hat, and one day at a restaurant, he found no place to safely put it. When he asked for a way to suggest to management that they install a hat rack, he was directed to a website. Not wanting to commit to the time it would consume 34

to log in, find and input a number from his receipt and fill out a survey form, he conceived a better idea ~ which was the genesis of Suggestion MailBox. Now, two years later, a business can register with Suggestion MailBox for only $10 per month. Once registered, the company receives suggestions submitted by customers, employees or even the general public using a free mobile App, which lists registered businesses within the vicinity of the user. Someone selects the business he wants to submit a suggestion N R V B u s i n e s s Ye a r b o o k

to and writes the idea. There is an option to submit anonymously or to include an email address, which may reap benefits in coupons or special promotions. Press the Submit button ~ and that’s it! No more tracking down website addresses, finding receipts, keying in code numbers and fumbling through some silly survey. The suggestion goes directly and privately to the person designated by each business. This App is being pilot tested in the New River Valley and Roanoke region where businesses are given a free, 3-month trial period; after which fees are paid monthly. There is no contract. Sign up your business today at www.SuggestionMailBox.com; and download the App from the Apple and Google App Stores.

The rotary push mower and two-man saw have been set aside in favor of the power mower, riding mower and chain saw. Power Zone sells and services a mind-boggling array of mowers, weed eaters, snowblowers, trimmers, chippers and shredders, tillers, drills and augers, blowers, mowers and edgers, generators, protective apparel and much more. The New River Valley is downright fortunate that Jim Higham met Danny St. Clair. Higham purchased parts and equipment from Danny’s Repair Shop, which started in an 11 x 11-foot shed turning wrenches with the cash drawer in Danny’s pocket. A few years down the road, Danny decided to close the shop, and Jim teamed up with two employees, 2016

Duke Lucas and Peter Clouse, to buy the business and form Power Zone, Inc., on Jan. 1, 1997. The company operated in Giles County for a decade before moving to Christiansburg. Seven years hence, Power Zone acquired the one-time HarleyDavidson dealership building. Not only do they stock all the power and hand tools you need to get the job done, they provide service and parts for more than 40 product lines, including ones sold by major retailers. Power Zone has evolved into a premier supplier of tools, power equipment, repair and parts, with pick up and delivery services as well. In the late 1970s a small group of Blacksburg merchants made a plan to sponsor an annual summer fair. Their efforts did not take long to root, and eventually the celebration they founded grew to be the Steppin’ Out Street Festival that we know and love today. Buoyed by the success of Steppin’ Out and encouraged by town citizens, the merchants created a formal organization to represent and advance the town’s Central Business District. In 1988, the Downtown Merchants of Blacksburg (DMOB), was formed. Since then, the group has evolved into an organization of more than 150 retailers, service providers, non-profit groups and individuals who are all dedicated to helping promote and enhance the downtown commercial district. In 2010, the name changed to Downtown Blacksburg, Inc., but the mission remains the same. DBI is a non-profit (501c6) association of merchants, property owners, and 2016

downtown advocates whose mission is to sustain a dynamic, vital, and diverse community through marketing, events, economic development, and leadership. Downtown Blacksburg is the home of primarily locally owned and operated small businesses- eclectic dining, beautiful boutique shopping, Blacksburg Farmers Market and the historical Lyric Theatre- the heart of the downtown. In its commitment to keep our downtown actively engaged, DBI hosts multiple annual family-friendly events throughout the year that help support and celebrate our downtown community. All proceeds are reinvested into the community where we work and play. DBI has provided funding for downtown park benches, brick pavers, street lamps, the Famers Market, the Lyric Theatre, the Alexander Black House & Cultural Center and more.
