For everyone who has a brand of recreation which can be done effectively in slippers, call those ultra soft

adventures, there’s someone else who doesn’t consider s/he has recreated well unless it’s been an adrenaline-

pumping thrill like whitewater rafting, rock climbing or whizzing along a zip line in the treetops. Luckily for those extremes and most of everyone else in the middle, the New River Valley offers a wide range of fun stuff. As it’s not

possible in these pages to include copious information on every recreation spot, here are the basics, and one can easily find specifics like hours, fees and directions on the Internet.

Shopping

Shopping is akin to a national pastime, super sport, frequent hobby, fun social outing and overall good-

for-you activity, especially when you are away from home with a little vacation change in your pocket and leisure time on your hands. Spend it wisely discovering new gifts, new shops, new people, new streets, new stuff. You can find interesting things all over the New River Valley in shops you never knew or ones you love to visit again and again. Acquiring something new and different may raise serotonin levels, whether the merchandise is for you or someone else, as giving also boosts serotonin levels.

Shopping can be a stress-reliever as well because it directs your attention to attractive display cases,

handsome sporting gear, clothing and home decor, flea market finds and highly coveted Virginia Tech, Hokie, VCOM, Radford University, Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine and New River Community College emblazoned merchandise. And there’s mental, emotional and physical exercise involved. It’s a win-win scenario for an NRV shopping excursion with beaucoup intriguing things to find along every town’s main streets.

See & Do

NEW RIVER VALLEY

Floyd County -- Every shop in the one-traffic-light

town of Floyd is compelling. That’s why they put glass in front windows and sport funky signs and clever names. Bell Gallery & Garden has had a presence for years. Wild Weeds Studio, A Little Monkey Business, Hey Helen, New Mountain Mercantile, Republic of Floyd Emporium, many antique shops with vintage stuff and clothing from country duds to refined city sophistication are all worth the drive.

Giles County -- The towns of Pearisburg, Pembroke,

Rich Creek and Narrows are wonderful enclaves to explore for hiking gear and supplies, jewelry, fabric, flea market finds, candles, gifts and Amish crafted home furnishings. It has even been reported that some of the best produce, occasional country crafts, jams and jellies, cheese, comfort foods and homemade foodie fare are found at the gas stations in Giles.

Montgomery

County -- Shopkeepers are

sprinkled throughout the county. The New River Valley Mall, many strip malls and the attractive First & Main shopping district on South Main Street in Blacksburg are home to major retailers and indie businesses.

Blacksburg -- Downtown is a 16-block area of historical

buildings and shops, cafes, sports bars and useful places like the U.S. Post Office, banks with ATMs, hair stylists and a popular farmer’s market (Wed and Sat.). Fringe Benefit and Matrix Gallery measure their downtown presence in more than three decades, and newbies like t.r. Collection, Sundae Best and 310 Rosemont offer gifts, eclectic and fine clothing and home and personal accessories. Other places will grab your attention as you stroll around, and Miller off Main St. Galleries, in its 42nd year, is worth a stroll at 250 Wilson Ave., about eight blocks from the center of downtown.

Christiansburg -- With brick sidewalks, church steeples and a community spirit embedded in its long history as a settlement on the Great Road to the western frontier, the downtown antique shops draw visitors from all over the East Coast. Dozens of dealers offer fine and

Shopping country furniture, home decor, books, dishes, saddles sometimes, a little bit of everything. The farmers market is open Thursdays in season on Hickok Street, and downtown is host to truck rodeos, street fairs and festivals.

Pulaski County -- The Marketplace at the historic train station

bustles all summer on Tuesdays with fresh produce and crafts. The Fine Arts Center of the New River Valley has found its home in downtown Pulaski for decades with local and regional arts and crafts. You might not want to miss The Blue Ridge Fudge Lady, Shabby Chic Boutique, Stand Out Fashion or Southern Harts, whose slogan is: “When you shop at a small business, an actual person does a happy dance.”

Radford City -- The first stop here can be the Radford Visitor’s

Center inside Glencoe Mansion. Along with copious information is a gift shop with local arts and crafts, books and Virginia is for Lovers merchandise. Downtown is a fun mix of flea market finds at Riley’s Uniques, local arts and crafts at Green Heron Arts, jewelry, antiques, fine and casual clothing boutiques and yard art.

Arts & Culture

The plethora of arts in all its genres and cultural events in the New River Valley has an immensely positive

impact on visitors, residents and local communities. They forge a strong connection to the region’s character, create a sense of place and promote kinship among the population. All artistic and cultural expression embraces a broad swath of social, economic, historic and contemporary small town and rural life. It is with and through the arts that the New River Valley’s identity continues to evolve in the context of past, present and future. Appalachian heritage, abundant natural resources, farming, mining and skilled craftsmen and women co-exist comfortably with high tech geeks, educational institutions and an extensive international population which enriches the region and complements its frontier roots.

It’s easy to find something year-round that embraces artistic expression. The Nutcracker is performed each

December by local dance studios in small venues or on stage in the $100 million Moss Arts Center in Blacksburg. This sophisticated venue plays host as well to Appalachian musicians and The Crooked Road’s Mountains of Music

The Summer Musical Enterprise is in its

26th year of presenting theatre for the community, by the community. Anyone can participate, and its production is eagerly anticipated and sold out. Blacksburg Regional Art Association [blacksburgart. org] members exhibit art in multiple locations like offices, banks and coffee shops. Beloved American artist Pat Buckley Moss, who donated $10 million to the VT Center for the Arts a.k.a. Moss Arts Center, resides in the New River Valley. She makes personal appearances at her P. Buckley Moss Gallery on Gilbert Street in Blacksburg. Many artists open their galleries to the public, and the Floyd County Artisan Trail boasts more than 40 open studios across a long weekend in June. Virginia Tech and Radford University promote their schools of performing arts with a variety of music, art, dance and theater productions.

One of the best souvenirs a traveler can

acquire is a local art piece or handcrafted item to take home for oneself, family, dogsitter, housesitter, colleague or shop in advance for holidays and birthdays. Among the art galleries where visitors can see and purchase local art and crafts are:

Spa & Wellness

The Fountain of Youth, a magical water source reputed to reverse the aging process and cure sickness, remains as elusive in the 21st century as when Juan Ponce de Leon and his pals searched for it in 1513. But the fact of the matter is that youth is a state of mind anyway, not a time of life, and it embraces all the enthusiasm for adventure as much as the down times of pure relaxation sprinkled with some stress relief maneuvers, like massage, and pampering from your hair and face out to hands and fingernails and down to feet and toes. Therapy comes in many forms, and a little personal indulgence directly impacts one’s self-esteem, level of optimism and a not-so-elusive enhanced sense of well being. The power of rejuvenation holds the key to feeling fabulous, putting a spring in your step and restoring a whimsical, fun-loving spirit. The New River Valley is endowed with an abundance of service-minded people who offer myriad massage options, state-of-the-art manicures and pedicures, hair treatments from trims to curls, color and cuts, facials and much more. Whether you are on vacation, on a business trip, attending a conference, visiting colleges or college students and family members, consider taking advantage of 34

being away from the daily grind to carve out time for some beneficial personal luxury. Walking has been one of the very best exercises since the dawn of time, but can be another activity that gets crowded out. Well, take advantage of being away from home, the copious walking opportunities in the NRV and our smog-free southwest Virginia fresh air. Swimming is another oft-touted healthy exercise that does not require a lot of gear or expense, and the aquatic centers in Blacksburg and Christiansburg have open swim times. Workout venues include the Weight Club, CrossFit 460, Blacksburg Fitness and Pilates Studio, Anytime Fitness, YMCA of Pulaski County, Dublin Fitness Center, Floyd Fitness, Giles County Wellness Center and more. You might be dressing up for a classy Moss Arts Center symphony or international performance, dressing down for a day on the New River or Claytor Lake or simply slipping into the bestest, softest blue jeans you packed to meet a friend or colleague for coffee. Treat yourself to a swim, a walk, a workout, a spa treatment, and step out with glowing confidence and a renewed passion for life.

VT & RU

You do not have to be a Hokie or a Highlander or

even a resident to get caught up in the excitement of college

or high school sports in the New River Valley. Tailgating for

Virginia Tech ACC football games starts early -- about the time the sun comes up for some. Traffic can be bumper to bumper getting to the Dedmon Center for Big South Conference NCAA basketball at Radford University. Those

games may get a lot of press, but over at RU, many of the

9,400 students participate in baseball, golf, soccer, tennis,

cross country, equine competitions, ice hockey, ultimate frisbee, lacrosse, volleyball, track and field and more. 36

them engage in soccer, rugby, volleyball, lacrosse, tennis,

water polo, fencing, equestrian events, field hockey, cricket,

skills and time management experience. High schools,

private schools and elementary schools across the NRV are also proud of their sports teams, teaching young ‘uns the

value of team playing, a healthy competitive spirit and that winning is a kick and losing is a bummer. Good lessons to learn at an early age.

New River Valley wineries continue producing stellar wines in myriad varieties, and vintners rise to the challenge of blending grapes and flavors for vino of incomparable quality. Grapes grow well in southwest Virginia for its good soil and cool climate. Beliveau Estate Winery, a destination boutique winery outside Blacksburg, maintains 12 acres of grapes and produces and bottles all its award-winning wine on-site. Beliveau also is home to a luxury B&B, lavender festival, wedding venue, tasting bar and many special events. On the eastern edge of the region along the Blue Ridge Parkway, Chateau Morrisette revels in its 40th year of being “a hobby that soon got out of hand.” The premier 40

winery boasts a world-class restaurant, some of the finest wines produced in Virginia, elite wine tastings, music festivals, an intriguing gift shop with a tasting bar and year round events that draw folks to its scenic mountaintop vistas. The New River Valley’s Giles County on the western boundary is home to Giles Mountain Vineyard & Winery and JBR Winery. Iron Heart Winery, near the southern tip of the NRV, was founded on a 1782 land grant parcel that housed an Iron Complex some 100 years ago. “The name attempts to capture portions of the property’s bountiful history and admirable traits of an amazing man in its past,” states the father-son owners, who work side by side daily and also

offer home stays, corporate retreats and an event venue. Robert Louis Stevenson wrapped up the essence of wine in four words: “Wine is bottled poetry.

Golf

“Golf combines two favorite American pastimes:

taking long walks and hitting things with a stick.” [American

writer and satirist P.J. O’Rourke] Among the kilts, bagpipes

and legendary creatures living in lakes, Scotland is the heralded home of golf, beginning in the Middle Ages. It’s been said that life is good when you’re golfing, and

therefore, you can enjoy a slice of the good life while you

are visiting the New River Valley. Among the attractions of the sport, which some, by the way, refer to as a way of life,

play individually or as a team, and you can make friends, make deals, make mistakes or make a hole in one.

You can play like a champion and embrace the

golfer’s diet of living on greens as much as possible. It’s not

really a hit or miss kind of sport, but sometimes more a hit it, find it, hit it again approach. Whatever your skill level, you can enjoy your daily dose of iron in the NRV among

beautiful scenery with beaucoup water hazards, occasional trees and sand trap challenges.

Paw-ventures A dog will teach you unconditional love. If you can have that in your life, things won’t be too bad. ~ Robert Wagner, actor Know yourself. Don’t accept your dog’s admiration as conclusive evidence that you are wonderful. ~ Ann Landers

You know how much fun it is to get out of your car to go on a new adventure like a hike, outside shopping plaza, park or eatery with outdoor dining? Some place you’ve never been before? Hold that thought and multiply your excitement 10-fold or more, and that’s how thrilled your dog might be in the same scenario. New things to see, nudge, touch, sniff and ... well ... you know, a brand new place to explore, even on the six-foot circle of a leash. The same walk every day is a sensational outing for a dog. His or her body language speaks volumes, and your imagination won’t even take you to the dog’s level of enthusiasm for a new paw-venture. Even if you are elated, you don’t come close to expressing that with the same bounding joy of a dog. Half the fun is watching our best canine friend embrace the novelty of some new exploit. 56

NEW RIVER VALLEY

Lots of places across the New River Valley accept dogs, and if you have a dog with you, you already know of at least one lodging establishment because you and your dog are staying there. Check online at the major websites like dogfriendly.com and bringfido.com, but for local places, find the website below and the dog parks. Many town parks allow dogs on leash with clean up required, so get on your walking shoes and grab your dog for NRV paw-ventures.

Anna’s Restaurant Where to live in retirement is a challenging decision, and the New River Valley is growing, in part, because of its appeal to older folks. Of course, some come to be near family, and many come back to retire because of the fond memories of their small town college days. There is more than a handful of couples who settle here to be between grown children or grandchildren who reside north and south of the NRV. An equally impressive number of retirees have chosen to live out their golden years simply from driving through and/or doing a little research into cost of living, educational and cultural opportunities, the art scene, outdoor recreation, entertainment, community spirit and the climate. Oh yes, the climate. A delightful change of seasons, a vibrant spring, warm summer, brilliant autumn and short winter. Those who dig deeper into the draw of the region find a wide variety of volunteer opportunities, churches, book clubs, senior trips, golf groups, bridge clubs, stellar healthcare facilities, affordable housing, pet boarding and a modest cost of living. Some look at assisted living options, home health care, part time jobs, transportation assistance, entrepreneurial possibilities and financial services. It’s all here. In the New River Valley. For the golden years.
