Coffee & Tea If it wasn’t for the coffee, I’d have no identifiable personality whatsover. David Letterman, TV host, writer, producer To me, the smell of fresh-made coffee is one of the greatest inventions. Hugh Jackman, actor
Legends abound on the discovery of coffee, and the average coffee drinker probably doesn’t care where it originally came from, but cares deeply that it is available. Brewing is a bit of an art, but roasting is where the real efforts lie that release aroma and flavor from inside green coffee beans. During a rapid heating process, a chemical reaction causes moisture to be released before the beans are just as quickly cooled. Expert roasters, like the ones at Mill Mt. Coffee & Tea in Blacksburg which opened in 1991, have years of experience in volume, temperature management and timing to yield perfectly roasted coffee beans in four basic levels: light, medium, medium-dark and dark. The first coffee trader was a Boston lady named Dorothy Jones who secured a license to sell coffee in 1670. Both the American Revolution and French Revolution were plotted in coffee houses. The coffee filter was invented in Germany in 1908, and “cowboy coffee” is so named because those boys used their dirty socks for filters, filling them with coffee beans then dipping a sock in boiling water. Coffee is the second largest traded commodity in the world, behind oil. Red Rooster Coffee roasters in Floyd deliver “coffee with a conscience” as they take seriously having a positive impact around the world in the place of origin as well as locally. One of the most important things to a visitor in the New River Valley may be a hot cup of freshly brewed coffee, and rest assured, there are many wonderful cafes with locally roasted coffee. 18

Coffee & Tea Tea is reputed to have been discovered by Chinese Emperor Shen Nong when a leaf found its way into water he was boiling in his garden. Once consumption became popular, the government levied a tax, and it was named the national drink of China. Taxation has always been a controversial issue, and the early American colonists dumped 45 tons of tea into Boston Harbor in 1773 in protest of taxation [on tea among other things] without representation. Tea bags are a U.S. invention [1908] along with iced tea four years earlier at the St. Louis World’s Fair. It was a hot day. Tea wasn’t selling well, so Englishman Richard Blechynden poured it over ice with instant success. Originally used only as medicine, tea sales today top $12 billion in the U.S. Green tea is reportedly the most healthy of teas, but black tea is the most popular. “Brewing fine tea and positivity” is the mantra at Tea & Jam on the north end of Blacksburg. They take their tea seriously, buying primarily from independent growers and family farms. Like owner Jack Howard, once you discover the flavor in properly brewed, loose leaf tea and its health benefits, you might never immerse another tea bag. If you are a tea drinker, there are plenty of places all around the NRV to satisfy your daily tea passion.
Tea time is a chance to slow down, pull back and appreciate our surroundings. Letitia Baldrige, etiquette expert Come, let us have some tea and continue to talk about happy things. Chaim Potok, author, rabbi

It was Gertrude Stein who quipped: “Whoever said money can’t buy happiness simply didn’t know where to go shopping.” There are lots of folks in the New River Valley who actually can do all their holiday, gift, personal and daily shopping right here. They are committed to the Buy Local mantra to keep our local economy strong. And you can contribute by purchasing some fun stuff, interesting gifts, nice things and regional crafts to cart home for yourself, family, friends, the dogsitter, housesitter, farm sitter, a colleague, nice neighbor or anyone else. Acquiring something new and different may raise serotonin levels, and someone aptly pointed out that when you’re shopping, you are not eating, so there could be a healthy angle. Factor in the local economic contribution, social engagement - if just with a store clerk - and satisfaction at having purchased something new, and it’s a feel-good, stress-relieving activity. There are tons of things emblazoned with Blacksburg, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Hokie, VCOM, Radford University, Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine and New River Community College. Every corner of the New River Valley has charming shops and intriguing merchandise. 20

NEW RIVER VALLEY
Floyd County -- Every store in this one-traffic-light town of Floyd is compelling. Some have glass front windows and sport funky signs and clever names. At others, you need to step through the front door to be blown away by cool fashion, vintage finds, beautiful arts and crafts and all kinds of things you probably won’t find at the mall or in your hometown. Bell Gallery & Garden has had a presence for years. Wild Weeds Studio, A Little Monkey Business, Hey Helen, New Mountain Mercantile, Harvest Moon, Republic of Floyd Emporium, Elma’s Corners, Vintage Finds and antique shops with old stuff and clothing from country duds to refined city sophistication are all worth the drive. Giles County -- The towns of Pearisburg, Pembroke,
Rich Creek and Narrows are wonderful enclaves to explore for hiking gear and supplies, jewelry, fabric, flea market finds, candles, gifts and Amish crafted home furnishings. It has even been reported that some of the best produce, occasional country crafts, jams and jellies, cheese, comfort foods and homemade foodie fare are found at the gas stations in Giles. Walker Valley Market, Pearis Mercantile and Cascade Cafe (nice gifts inside) are a few don’t-miss spots, and Ms. Audre’s Fabric ‘n Fellowship in Narrows is an incredible fabric and notions store stocking more than 6,000 bolts. Gunpowder Springs artisan shop is next to The Palisades Restaurant in Eggleston.

Shopping Montgomery County -- Stores are sprinkled throughout the
county. The New River Valley Mall, many strip malls and the attractive First & Main shopping district on South Main Street in Blacksburg are home to major retailers and indie businesses.
Blacksburg -- Downtown is a 16-block area of historical buildings
and shops, cafes, sports bars and useful places like the U.S. Post Office, banks with ATMs, hair stylists and a popular farmer’s market (Wed and Sat.). Fringe Benefit and Matrix Gallery measure their downtown presence in more than three decades, and more recent places like t.r. Collection, Sugar Magnolia and 310 Rosemont offer gifts, eclectic and fine clothing and home and personal accessories. Other places will grab your attention as you stroll around.
Christiansburg -- With brick sidewalks, church steeples and a community spirit embedded in its long history as a settlement on the Great Road to the western frontier, the downtown antique shops draw visitors from all over the East Coast. Dozens of dealers offer fine and country furniture, home decor, books, dishes, saddles sometimes, a little bit of everything. The farmers market is open Thursdays in season on Hickok Street, and downtown is host to truck rodeos, street fairs and festivals. Mockingbird Cafe & Bakery will delight your sweet tooth or lunch craving.
Pulaski County -- The Marketplace at the historic train station
bustles all summer on Tuesdays with fresh produce and crafts. The Fine Arts Center of the New River Valley has found its home in downtown Pulaski for decades with local and regional arts and crafts. You might not want to miss The Blue Ridge Fudge Lady, Shabby Chic Boutique, Stand Out Fashion or Southern Harts, whose slogan is: “When you shop at a small business, an actual person does a happy dance.” Peacocks and Hollyhocks in the old Dublin train depot is a treasure trove of fun jewelry, primitive decor and other home accents.
Radford City -- The first stop here can be the Radford Visitor’s
Center inside Glencoe Mansion, Museum & Gallery. Along with copious information is a gift shop with local arts and crafts, books and Virginia is for Lovers merchandise. Downtown is a fun mix of flea market finds at Riley’s Uniques, local arts and crafts at Green Heron Arts, jewelry, antiques, fine and casual clothing boutiques and yard art.

Arts & Culture
With a population of residents and visitors that spans the globe, the New River Valley has an abundance of cultures represented and myriad visual, literary and performing arts. Collectively, they have a positive impact on and strong connection to the region’s personality, viability and quality of life. All artistic and cultural expression embraces a broad swath of social, economic, historic and contemporary small town and rural life. It is through the arts that the New River Valley continues to evolve in the context of past, present and future. Appalachian heritage, ample natural resources, farming, mining and skilled artisans reside comfortably among high tech geeks, premier educational institutions and a remarkable international presence which enriches the region and complements its frontier roots. There are exhibits, shows and productions year-round that embrace artistic expression. The Nutcracker is performed each December by local dance studios in small venues or on stage in the $100 million Moss Arts Center in Blacksburg. This sophisticated venue plays host as well to Appalachian musicians and The Crooked Road’s Mountains of Music Homecoming with banjos, guitars and dulcimers. Special performances include the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Kingdom Choir, Silkroad Ensemble and National Geographic Live, plus art shows and artist talks. 26

New River Valley Regional Theatre in Pulaski brings professional and national Equity talent and stage professionals to its venue and has produced a murder mystery at Draper Mercantile dubbed “Murder at the Merc.” The Summer Musical Enterprise is in its 27th year of offering theatre for the community, by the community. Anyone can participate, and its production is always a sell-out. New River Stage offers another creative community theatre outlet. Blacksburg Regional Art Association [blacksburgart. org] members exhibit all over in offices, banks, galleries and coffee shops. Floyd Community Theatre Guild presents many productions in conjunction with the June Bug Center for Arts & Education. Beloved American artist Pat Buckley Moss, who donated $10 million to the VT Center for the Arts, now the Moss Arts Center, lives in the New River Valley and often makes personal appearances at her gallery in Blacksburg. The Floyd County Artisan Trail boasts more than 40 open studios across a long weekend every June. Virginia Tech and Radford University offer a wide variety of music, art, dance and drama productions. One of the best souvenirs a traveler can acquire is a local art piece or handcrafted item for self, family member, anniversary gift, dogsitter, housesitter, colleague or shop in advance for holidays and birthdays. Spa & Wellness
The Fountain of Youth, a magical water source reputed to reverse the aging process and cure sickness, remains as elusive in the 21st century as when Juan Ponce de Leon and his crew searched for it in 1513. But the fact of the matter is that youth is a state of mind anyway, not a time of life. Visitors to the New River Valley often find time on their hands not present in daily life at home. And what better way to use it than to work in a work out, get your feet and hands pampered, enjoy a massage or browse the health food stores, even step out bravely and get your hair trimmed by someone you never met. Therapy comes in many forms, and a little personal indulgence can have a positive impact on your self-esteem, level of optimism and enhanced sense of well-being. The power of rejuvenation holds the key to feeling good, putting a spring in your step and restoring an easy-going, fun-loving spirit. The New River Valley is endowed with an abundance of stellar service-minded people who offer massages, state-of-the-art manicures and pedicures, hair treatments from trims to curls, color and cuts, facials and much more. Whether you are on vacation, on a business trip, attending a conference, visiting colleges or college students and family members, consider taking advantage of being away from the daily grind to carve out time for some beneficial personal luxury. 34
See & Do
NEW RIVER VALLEY
Walking has been one of the top exercises for wellness since the dawn of time, and the NRV has many beautiful parks and trails. Take advantage of being here in our smog-free southwest Virginia fresh air. Swimming is another oft-touted healthy exercise that does not require a lot of gear or expense, and the aquatic centers in Blacksburg and Christiansburg have open swim times. Workout venues include the Weight Club, CrossFit 460, Blacksburg Fitness and Pilates Studio, New River Personal Training, Anytime Fitness, YMCA of Pulaski County, Dublin Fitness Center, Floyd Fitness, Giles County Wellness Center and more. Yoga space and spiritual retreats are abundant, like the Healing Tree Wellness Center, Living Light River Studio and Anahata, all three interesting places in Floyd. You might be dressing up for a spectacular night out at a Moss Arts Center symphony or international performance, dressing down for a day on the New River or Claytor Lake or simply slipping into the softest pair of blue jeans and comfy sneakers you packed to track down some freshly brewed coffee or tea. Tea & Jam on N. Main St. in Blacksburg offers myriad teas touting all kinds of health benefits. Treat yourself to a swim, walk, workout, spa treatment or totally relaxing coffee shop hour. Then meet the world with a refreshed confidence and passion for life.

VT & RU
You do not have to be a Hokie or a Highlander or
even a resident to get caught up in the excitement of college
or high school sports in the New River Valley. Tailgating for
Virginia Tech ACC football games starts early -- about the time the sun comes up for some. Traffic can be bumper to bumper getting to the Dedmon Center for Big South Conference NCAA basketball at Radford University. Those
games may get a lot of press, but over at RU, many of the
9,400 students participate in baseball, golf, soccer, tennis,
cross country, equine competitions, ice hockey, ultimate frisbee, lacrosse, volleyball, track and field and more. 36

Virginia Tech students number 32,300 and lots of
them engage in soccer, rugby, volleyball, lacrosse, tennis,
water polo, fencing, equestrian events, field hockey, cricket,
baseball and much more. Student athletes often get a leg up in the real world for having acquired team and leadership
skills and time management experience. High schools,
private schools and elementary schools across the NRV are also proud of their sports teams, teaching young ‘uns the
value of team playing, a healthy competitive spirit and that winning is a kick and losing is a bummer. Good lessons to learn at an early age.

Moonshine
Adjacent to Floyd County is the once touted “Moonshine Capital of the World” so it’s just a whisker away that Five Mile Mountain Distillery has set up shop -- uh, legally. It’s the first distillery in Floyd since Prohibition, and they’re using the same ol’ recipes along with traditional copper stills on open flames. Smooth 80 proof moonshines include the Elderberry and Vanilla Plum Moonshine, while the Sweet Mountain Moonshine is a 100 proof, traditional corn and barley moonshine whiskey. They say it’s smooth solo but makes a great cocktail or infusion as well.

Wine
“Wine is bottled poetry” ~ Robert Louis Stevenson
Grapes grow well in southwest Virginia for its good soil and cool climate and enterprising wine makers and vintners are stepping out every year to create small batch, award-winning wines. Beliveau Estate Winery, a destination boutique winery in the lush countryside near Blacksburg, also offers luxury lodging, a long-running annual lavender festival, wedding venue, tasting bar and many special events. Along the Blue Ridge Parkway, Chateau Morrisette revels in more than 40 years of having “a hobby that soon got out of hand.” The premier winery boasts a world-class restaurant, some of the finest wines produced in the East, elite wine tastings, music festivals, a large gift shop with a large tasting 40

Iron Heart Winery, near the southern tip of the region, was founded on a 1782 land grant parcel that housed an Iron Complex some 100 years ago. “The name attempts to capture portions of the property’s bountiful history and admirable traits of an amazing man in its past,” states the father-son owners, who work side by side daily and also offer home stays, corporate retreats and an event venue. Other wineries are sprinkled around the New River Valley with every county represented. The City of Radford modified an ordinance which now permits a craft brewery downtown.

Golf Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening - and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented. ~ Arnold Palmer
Golf courses are beautiful for the near-perfect
turf, sloping land, little beach spots aka sand traps and
water features. When embedded into the New River Valley environment of rolling countryside, blue skies, sunshine,
rivers, rocks, valleys and hillsides, it becomes an incredible fresh air outing, unless, of course, it’s raining or snowing. It’s been said that life is good when you’re golfing, so it’s easy to enjoy a slice of the good life in every corner of the NRV. 42

Whatever your skill level, you can enjoy your daily dose of iron in the NRV among beautiful scenery with all the challenges, surprises and disappointments in golf anywhere. It’s just prettier here, we think.

I’ve always said money may buy you a fine dog, but only love can make it wag its tail. - Kinky Friedman, singer, songwriter No one appreciates the very special genius of your conversation as the dog does. - Christopher Morley, writer
Bringing your dog to the New River Valley eliminates separation anxiety for both dog and owner, and the pup is welcome in many places. Dog friendly hotels can be found at online sites like bringfido.com, tripswithpets.com and pet-friendly-hotels.net. Restaurants and cafes with outdoor dining often permit dogs in the patio space, and well-mannered dogs on leashes can go into Lowe’s, PetSmart, Kibbles on Main and other places. Parks, hikes, rivers and trails are like heaven to most dogs. The same walk every day is a sensational experience for a dog, and 10-fold as exciting in a new place.

Where to spend your retirement years is a very important decision, and the New River Valley is growing, in part, because of its appeal to older folks. Many come to be near family, and others return because of fond memories of their small town college days. There is more than a handful of oldsters who settle in the NRV to be between grown children or grandchildren who reside north and south of the region. An equally impressive number of retirees choose to live out their golden years simply from driving through or having done a little research into cost of living, educational and cultural opportunities, climate, art scene, outdoor recreation, entertainment and community spirit. We have a wonderful change of seasons with a vibrant spring, warm summer, brilliant autumn and short, mild winter [compared to Buffalo, Bozeman and Bismarck]. Volunteer opportunities, churches, book clubs, senior trips, golf groups, bridge clubs, stellar healthcare facilities, affordable housing and pet boarding are abundant. Assisted living options exist alongside myriad home health care choices, part time jobs, transportation assistance, state-of-the-art hospitals and sound financial services. Real estate is affordable. The New River Valley is the ideal place to age gracefully and enjoy all the benefits of small town life. 68
