Support to Belgium “We will do whatever is necessary to support our friend and ally Belgium in bringing to justice those who are responsible,” President Barack Obama said this morning at the start of his speech from Havana. “And this is yet another reminder that the world must unite. We must be together, regardless of nationality or race or faith in fighting against the scourge of terrorism. We can and we will defeat those who threaten the safety and security of people all around the world.” During testimony to the House Armed Services Committee today, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said U.S. officials are accounting for all personnel assigned in Europe. He added that the United States will provide whatever assistance Belgium needs.

CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Doug Carpenter NSA Naples Commanding Officer

The “Eggstravaganza” is happening tomorrow at Carney Park! This is a great community event for families and children that will consist of lots of games, food, and fun so be sure to get there early – the official events begin at 11 a.m. In partnership with the USO, the MWR team and a host of talented volunteers have done a lot of planning for the Eggstravaganza, and the activities include something for everyone; like candy and egg hunts, music, food, a bounce house, game area, egg decorating and more. We will also have a furry celebrity with great eyesight hopping from one event to another and who will be available in the park for photos. So remember, Carney Park is the place to be this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. With spring weather approaching it’s a great time to volunteer and participate in events like community relations projects (COMRELS), MWR activities, and base cleanup events. If you or your group is looking for information on how to plugin, a great way to get started would be to attend our first ever community outreach forum April 4th at the Support Site Reel Time Cinema. This will be the MWR Community Recreation Director’s first collaborative planning session and members of NSA Naples community commands, private organizations and civilians are all invited. It’s scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and go to 7:30 p.m. Who should attend? Individuals and members of organizations such as NOSC, USO, Boys Scouts and Girls Scouts, Boosters, NES, NHS, PTSA, WRA, NEX, DECA, Tiger Sharks, ASC , FFSC, military ball Planners, holiday party committees, CPOA, FCPOA, SCPOA, PWOC, CWOC and Chaplain Corps – just to name a few. Discussions will include collaboration, partnering, synergy, synchronization and succeeding in common goals for our community. Finally, the summer PCS season is coming and all personnel transferring from the Naples area to other duty stations need to plan ahead to help guarantee a smooth move. Planning is especially important regarding vehicles. There are only three options for your vehicles – Sell, Ship or Scrap. It is very important to understand the process and restrictions regarding how vehicles can be sold, transportation via government contract or commercial shipping company, or scrapping the vehicle under Italian Customs Law. The worst thing to do is to not plan ahead and end up abandoning the vehicle. Penalties and fines can be significant. Please work with MVRO if you have any questions and you can potentially save thousands of dollars. Enjoy the long holiday weekend and the great weather. Please slow down on the roads and stay safe!

The institute used 150,000 grants from Italian cancer charity AIRC three years ago. According to a paper published in the Journal of Breath Research, the device discriminated between people who had lung cancer and those who did not in 90 percent cases when tested on 146 people, 70 diagnosed with tumors and 76 with no signs of the illness.

All patients breathe into it like a breathalyzer and it works by detecting the volatile organic compounds that the cancer emits. The results of tests on the electronic nose that was developed with Tor Vergata University in Rome are encouraging. The aim is to have a perfect model used for low-cost screening to help identify people who need further tests. yet with casualties piling up, the determined Marines grimly advanced, yardby-yard. Four days later, Mount Suribachi was captured. It took a month of exceptionally heavy fighting for the island to be completely taken. Within days of the invasion, a chance photograph of a group of Marines raising a large flag to celebrate the capture of Mount Suribachi was taken by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal. The next morning that photo was on the front page of newspapers around the world: The sacrifices being made by the Marines and the fight for Iwo Jima instantly became world famous. “In that moment, Rosenthal’s camera recorded the soul of a nation,” US Camera magazine reported. But it did more than that, after three years of war, public support was beginning to wear down, and Rosenthal’s photo provided much needed support when the military needed it the most. The losses from that campaign were staggering: In 36 days of fighting on the island, nearly 7,000 U.S. Marines were killed. Another 20,000 were wounded. Marines captured 216 Japanese soldiers; the rest were killed in action. More Marines were awarded the Medal of Honor – 27 seven in all, for action at Iwo Jima – than any other battle in U.S. history. The island was finally declared secured on March 16, 1945. But, it had also become one of the bloodiest battles in Marine Corps history. After the battle, Iwo Jima served as an emergency landing site for more than 2,200 American B-29 bombers, resulting in saving the lives of 24,000 U.S. airmen. Securing Iwo Jima also prepared the way for the last and largest battle in the Pacific: The invasion of Okinawa, and ultimately, the defeat of the Japanese empire. “Among the men who fought on Iwo Jima, uncommon valor was a common virtue,” said Commander in Chief, Pacific Ocean Areas Fleet Adm. Chester W. Nimitz.

Twenty-eight Naval Support Activity Naples activeduty Navy Sailors and base community volunteers delivered more than 400 pounds of non-perishable

food, hygienic materials and other humanitarian items to the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Hearts in Assisi, Italy, March 12. Assisi, about a four hour drive north of Naples, is a

small ancient town in central Italy’s Umbria region, and is best known as the birthplace and home of Saint Francis, Italy’s beloved patron saint. The region is also well known for its beautiful rolling

hills, stunning vistas and picturesque architecture. In the heart of the town is the convent of the Franciscan Sisters. The food and humanitarian items will be used by the nuns, who will share with those in need

from the local area. Sister Corazon Galamiton, originally from the Philippines, has served in Italy for nearly 30 years. She and the other nuns were thankful to the Navy volunteers who gave their time to bring the much-needed food and supplies to her convent. “We are very thankful for the Navy and the people who brought these here, she said. “For us this is a good providence, because there are so many people in need who come here, and we can share this food with them.” Cmdr. Don Biadog Jr., a chaplain based at Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia was one of the main coordinators for the trip to Assisi. “My hope and prayer that the community relations participants and pilgrims received spiritual replenishment and relaxing experience during our two-day visit in Assisi, a once-in-alifetime- experience,” Biadog said. “Kudos to all the volunteers for preparing, bringing, donating, loading, and offloading the humanitarian goods and the groceries during our ‘Operation Help the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Hearts’ this past weekend.” The chapel will be leading another community relations project to Rome to deliver food to the needy on April 23.

Cybercom Commander: Other Nations’ Cyberspace Ops Intensified By Terri Moon Cronk DoD News U.S. Cyber Command has witnessed intensified cyberspace operations by state and nonstate actors and wide-ranging malicious cyber activities targeting the government and the private sector in the past year, Cybercom commander Navy Adm. Michael S. Rogers told a House panel March 16. Rogers, who is also the National Security Agency director and Central Security Service chief, testified on Cybercom’s segment of the fiscal year 2017 Defense Department budget request before the House Armed Services Committee’s emerging threats and capabilities subcommittee. He highlighted Cybercom’s challenges and initiatives in the past year. “At this time, nations still present the greatest or gravest threats to our nation’s cybersecurity, because they alone can commit the significant resources to sustain sophisticated campaigns to penetrate in our best-guarded networks,” Rogers said. Watching for Nonstate ‘Signs’ Cybercom continues to look for signs that nations such as Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea and nonstate actors such as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant are developing “significant improvements” in their cyber capabilities, Rogers said. “They steal intellectual property, citizens’ personal information, and they have intruded into networks ranging from the Joint Staff’s unclassified network to networks controlling our nation’s critical infrastructure,” he said. U.S. adversaries use cyberspace to shape potential operations to try to limit U.S. options in a crisis, he said, adding that Cybercom is progressing in building its cyber mission force of 133 teams. Even those teams are not yet operational, they are conducting cyber operations to support U.S. Central Command in degrading, dismantling and ultimately defeating ISIL, Rogers noted. The Joint Force Headquarters DoD Information Networks stood up last year has already made “great strides” in its goal to lead day-to-day security and defense of the department’s data and networks, he said. More Confidence in DoD Systems And while DoD expands the joint information environment, Rogers said, there is much more confidence in DoD’s overall systems’ security and resilience. “Our operations to defend DoD networks and the nation’s critical infrastructure proceed in conjunction with a host of federal, industry and international partners,” he pointed out. Cyber mission forces continue to operate safely and in a way that respects Americans’ civil liberties and privacies, Rogers said. Cyber Exercises Are Unmatched Cybercom’s annual exercises, Cyber Flag and Cyber Guard, offer “unmatched realism as we train with federal, state, industry and international partners,” Rogers told the panel. “And while our training is improving, we need a persistent training environment which the department is continuing to develop to gain necessary operational skills and to sustain readiness across the force.” Cybercom is contributing to the new DoD cyber strategy, the commander said, adding that the command’s many responsibilities have allowed it to benefit from the authorities it was granted under the fiscal year 2016 National Defense Authorization Act, he said. “[It] represents a significant augmentation of our ability to provide capabilities to our cyber mission teams, as well as our ability to attract and retain a skilled cyber workforce,” Rogers said. And despite the challenging cyber environment in which the United States operates, Cybercom continues to make significant progress while it conducts cyber operations against determined adversaries, he said. “The command has a clear path ahead and is actively pursuing new initiatives and authorities to best position the command to address the challenges and opportunities that we will undoubtedly confront,” Rogers said.

Sweet Italian Treats for Easter By NSA Public Affairs

Every season and holiday in Italy brings with it different culinary traditions, and Easter is no different. Called Pasqua in Italian, Easter is a time when many Italians feast on lamb, and Naples families make dishes like minestra maritata, a soup of vegetables and pork. In the days leading up to the Easter holiday this Sunday, you’re also bound to see special seasonal treats lining the shelves of your local coffee bar or pasticceria. Here are a few you can indulge in if you want to celebrate Easter like an Italian. Le Uova Di Pasqua (Easter eggs) Colorfully wrapped chocolate eggs as big as a person’s head are common sights in Italian storefronts these days. The eggs are generally made of milk or dark chocolate and hollow on the inside. Each egg contains a surprise that can be accessed by breaking the egg open. Supermarkets sell generic versions of chocolate eggs that contain prepackaged surprises such as small toys or jewelry. It

is also possible to go to a artisan chocolate shop or pastry shop and order an egg to be specially made with customized surprises inside. Either way, the broken shards of the chocolate eggs make for a delicious Easter treat.

Pastiera Pastiera is an Easter tradition in the Campania region. It is essentially a pie filled with a soft mixture of cooked grain, ricotta cheese and candied citrus. If you go to buy one, you’ll receive not only the pastry, but also the round pan it is baked in, as it is deemed to delicate to be removed. Look for the decorative crisscross pattern on top to identify it. Colomba This sweet yeast cake is so-named because it is baked in the shape of a dove, or colomba in Italian. It is similar to the panettone and pandoro served around Christmas in Italy, but is distinguished by its distinctive dove shape and its coating, which usually consists of candied sugar and almonds. Colomba usually contains candied fruit, but omits the raisins that are typically found in panettone.
