MWR’s Spooktacular 2015 a Huge Success

Rethink Nutrition for Life: USNH Naples Offers New Approach for Losing Weight By Lt. Cmdr. Stephanie Clapper U.S. Naval Hospital Naples

WORD SEARCH / COLOR ME 12

“I have struggled with weight loss all my life!” I have heard this statement from patients hundreds of times over the years. These same patients hopefully listened to the traditional diet plan I provided them as a Registered Dietitian, and energetically set out to put the plan into action. However, many diet without success. Is there hope? What if I told you that the traditional diet plan of exercise more and eat less may not be the answer? What if I told you that dietary fat may not be the root of all evil? There has been a paradigm shift in nutrition, where we, as a medical community, are realizing that the key to understanding obesity may lie in our understanding that being overweight is a disorder of fat metabolism that starts at the cellular level. It may not be just about how much you eat or how much you exercise. What you are eating may be more important than how much you are eating. ReNuLife, or Rethink Nutrition for Life, is a nutrition transformation process run by the Health Promotions team at USNH Naples, Italy. ReNuLife was designed by a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurse/diabetes educators, corpsmen, and a dietitian (myself). It was created in response to our Health Promotion Department’s Community Needs Assessment that was conducted in August 2014 reporting weight management as a top health interest in the community.

Naples Cross Country Team Finishes Strong in Germany From Naples High School

On October 31, while most young people were dressed as monsters or superheroes collecting candy, the Naples cross country team were running their final 5K race at the XC European Championships in Baumholder, Germany. Both the men’s and women’s teams had successful regular seasons, dominating their Italian competitors. Their only regular season loss came at the beginning of the season against the German powerhouse Stuttgart. CROSS COUNTRY

CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Doug Carpenter NSA Naples Commanding Officer

Now-Dec. 18: “Swim to Salerno” Self-Paced Swim

U.S. Naval Bases around the world provide critical services and support for service members, staff, and their families. At NSA Naples, as with many OCONUS installations, we operate on leased property and work with local contractors who do things that we can’t do ourselves due to financial, legal, or governmental concerns. These functions include things like waste disposal, IP services, general maintenance, and custodial services. NSA Naples monitors contractor performance to ensure U.S. tax dollars are being used efficiently, and that our community members are receiving the services we pay for. One very important contract, the housing maintenance contract, is currently held by an Italian company named Mirabella. NSA Naples has a long standing partnership with Mirabella, and we have focused our efforts over the past few months to implement new initiatives aimed at improving the quality of service and the quality of life on Support Site. On Monday, I assigned five Seabees to assist with oversight and follow-up of service calls throughout Support Site Housing as the first of these initiatives. Other plans include reducing the amount of repeat service calls and improving the performance of HVAC systems, like heating and air conditioning. Your feedback via the chain of command, ICE, or town hall meetings is very important to me, and it helps to better understand the issues and develop plans to improve service. This week I sponsored a two-day partnering session with leaders from Mirabella, NAVFAC, the Public Works Department, the Housing Office, and NSA Naples to address quality of service, develop plans for improvement, and to strengthen the relationship between Mirabella and the Navy. A wide range of subjects were discussed including improvements to communication, conflict resolution, repeat service calls, air conditioning, customer service, trash disposal, and facility recapitalization. The discussions were positive and produced a number of joint action items that will result in an improved experience for Support Site residents. Sunday marked the first day of November, and with that the beginning of Native American Heritage month. Each year the Navy reflects on the profound way the first Americans shaped our Navy’s character, culture, and attitudes about diversity and inclusion. Native Americans have served in uniform for more than two centuries, from the Revolutionary War to the ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. In fact, Defense Department statistics show that Native Americans have the highest per-capita population of any ethnic group serving in the armed forces. I encourage the entire NSA Naples community to celebrate diversity every day by recognizing the contributions we all bring to the table, regardless of our color, creed or faith. November also marks the beginning of the holiday season, and it is hard for me to believe how fast the year has flown by. You may have noticed a new tree near the main gate of the Support Site. Have a great weekend, and don’t forget to say thanks to our Security forces and first responders who are always ready, seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Thank you!

Holiday Lights on Display at Salerno Through January

Grand Bourbon Ball at Royal Palace of Caserta

“Luci D’Artista” will adorn the streets of Salerno with lights from November 7 to January 24. The urban light installations are the work of contemporary artists and this year’s theme is “forest.” The city will be illuminated with fairy tale characters, enchanted gardens and mythical dragons. This year visitors will also be delighted to see the illuminations on the beach of Santa Teresa. Do not miss this event which can be a perfect opportunity to explore the beauty of a joyful city, cradled in art and history.

The Royal Palace of Caserta opens its doors to the Grand Bourbon Ball event, an exceptional evening where history, theater, music and dance come together on November 7. All visitors will be involved in a beautiful atmosphere of a Grand Ball where dancers will wear elegant historical costumes. The initiative is supported by the Ministry of Heritage, Culture and Tourism, and it includes the visit of the historical apartments of the Palace with its furnishings, works and masterpieces, bringing visitors to one of the most fascinating periods of the history of Naples. The visit to the apartments will run from 8 p.m. to midnight; admission is 9 euro. The Grand Ball performance starts at 9:30 p.m.

Oversized Lego Sculptures on Display in Rome’s Spazio Eventi Tirso Gallery American artist Nathan Sawaya opened his exhibition “The Art of the Brick” in Rome at Spazio Eventi Tirso gallery. The show is made up entirely of large dimension Legoblock sculptures, including more than 80 works, among which figure some surprising recreations of classical masterpieces, such as the Venus de Milo and the Parthenon, which took 30,201 Legos to build, as well as the Mona Lisa and The Kiss by Klimt. The exhibition runs through February 14, 2016.

World Famous Trevi Fountain Restored to Former Splendor After 17 months of restoration work, the Trevi Fountain in Rome returned to its former glory on Tuesday when hundreds of tourists witnessed its new façade and new illuminations. The renovation cost more than 2 million euro and was financed entirely by the private fashion house Fendi. The fountain was commissioned by Pope Clement XII in 1730 and is the end point of one of the aqueducts that supplied ancient Rome with water. It was last restored 23 years ago. The Acqua Vergine aqueduct runs for a total of 20 kilometers, ending at the fountain, where tourists can drink from a special tap tucked away at one side of the monument. Legend has it the water source was discovered in 19 B.C. by thirsty Roman soldiers who were guided to the site by a young girl, here the name, “Virgin Waters.”

NAVY HISTORY: BIRTH OF THE MARINE CORPS From U.S. Marine Corps

Leading up to the American Revolution, a committee of the Continental Congress met to draft a resolution calling for two battalions of Marines able to fight for independence at sea and on shore. On November 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia passed a resolution stating that “two Battalions of Marines be raised” for service as landing forces with the fleet. This resolution established the Continental Marines and marked the official birth date of the United States Marine Corps. Captain (later Major) Samuel Nicholas became the first commissioned officer in the Continental Marines. He remained the senior Marine officer throughout the American Revolution and is known as the first Marine Commandant. As his first order of business, Nicholas needed to recruit Marines to fill those two battalions. He visited numerous public inns and taverns throughout the city of Philadelphia to begin recruiting. One of his first recruits was a wellknown local patriot Robert Mullan, who was owner of Tun Tavern, which became crucial to Nicholas’ recruiting efforts. Eventually Tun Tavern became part of military legend as the birthplace of the Marine Corps. Serving on land and at sea, these first Marines

distinguished themselves in a number of important operations, including their first amphibious raid into the Bahamas in March 1776. The belligerent British were storing large supplies of gunpowder at Fort Nassau in the Bahamas. Nicholas and 234 Marines sailed with the Continental Navy on a mission to capture the fort and its supply of gunpowder and munitions. Within minutes of their arrival on shore, the British troops surrendered to the Marines. Their first challenge and success paved the way for greater operations to come. The Treaty of Paris in April 1783 brought an end to the Revolutionary War and as the last of the Navy's ships were sold, the Continental Navy and Marines went out of existence. Following the Revolutionary War and the formal re-establishment of the Marine Corps on July 11, 1798, Marines saw action in the quasiwar with France, landed in Santo Domingo, and took part in many operations against the Barbary pirates along the “Shores of Tripoli.” For two-and-a-half centuries spanning our nation’s history, U.S. Marines have been the first to enter many conflicts in an attempt to bring peace and stability around the world, while defending our nation’s shores. Happy birthday and Semper Fi to the United States Marine Corps.

NSIPS Schedules Maintenance Outage From Navy Personnel Command Public Affairs

The Navy Standard Integrated Personnel System (NSIPS) will be performing technical upgrades, Nov. 5-10, during which the system will be offline. The upgrade outage begins at 6 p.m. Central Standard Time, Nov. 5, and the system is scheduled to come back online at 8 a.m., Nov. 11. For users, the upgrade will result in a menu change. Currently, the menu is displayed on the left side of the page, but it will move to the top of the page as a drop down menu. Additionally, there will be expanded training capabilities allowing for self-paced, computer-based training with multiple playback modes. The impact to ships is that the central personnel and pay processing site will be shut down

during the aforementioned time frame, so transactions going to corporate systems (DJMS, OPINS, NES, etc.) will be delayed for that period, as will feedback from the corporate systems. The transactions processed on the ship's NSIPS servers will be queued for processing once the central system is back online and no transactions will be lost. All Sailors are encouraged to make sure eLeave requests for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday period are routed early, to ensure they are processed before the system goes down. ENERGY CONSERVATION Reducing energy waste from your electronics From the NSA Naples Energy Management Team

Activating the power-save function on your computer is a super-easy way to shave up to $90 a year off your utility bills. Exactly how much you save depends on whether you use a laptop or a CPU and a monitor and how long you currently leave your computer on for. Low power mode also helps equipment run cooler so it lasts longer. Get into the habit of turning off your monitor when you walk away for 20 minutes and your computer when you leave your desk for more than two hours, and you’ll rack up even more savings. Reduce the brightness setting of your television. Select the “home” mode because the “retail: or “vivid” mode (the default setting for most TVs) uses up to 25 percent more power, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council. While you’re at it, activate the energy- and powersaving modes on your TV and other appliances and save around $40 a year. Video game consoles, such as the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360, use nearly the same amount of power when they are turned on and left idle as they do when you are actively playing a game or watching a movie. Save more than $100 a year by remembering to turn off your gaming system whenever you’re not using it.

NUTRITION FOR LIFE from page 1 The ReNuLife program is based on the most current information coming out of nutrition science. The diet and program is designed to improve overall health, not just weight loss. There are many participants who enrolled simply with the goal of improving their overall health. The core aspect of this program is to focus on “Whole Foods” and decrease intake of refined carbohydrates. What exactly are refined carbohydrates? These include anything that is made with flour or sugar, which includes almost all processed foods and fast food. “You mean I can never eat pizza again?” No! To go through life without ever eating pizza, pasta, ice cream, and other sweets, especially in Italy is unimaginable. We don’t live in the Stone Age anymore, and we have so many foods to choose from, so more realistically, we should strive to decrease the frequency and quantity of refined carbohydrate and convenience food we eat – save them for a special occasion. Make pasta, rice, po-

tatoes, bread, pastries, and other starchy foods and sweets the exception, rather than the rule. But wait! Before you stop reading this article, I want to share some statistics with you, directly from our community here in Naples, Italy. Since kicking off ReNuLife in February 2015 over 200 participants have enrolled! Of those who have completed the 12-week program, the average weight loss is 12 pounds per person, and participants’ lose an average of 3 inches off their waist and 2 inches off their hips! For those participants looking for overall health improvement, participants had an increase in their healthy cholesterol and a decrease in unhealthy triglycerides! ReNuLife is open to all the NSA Naples community, it is easy to follow, and is self-paced. USNH Naples provides support, education, and accountability to meet your needs. Participants are given a one-page summary of foods to eat and those to avoid, with that they are on their own to plan their meals and set a meal schedule that works with their

DAILY TOURS

The Origins of Veterans Day From Department of Veterans Affairs

In 1921, an unknown World War I American soldier was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. This site, on a hillside overlooking the Potomac River and the city of Washington, D.C., became the focal point of reverence for America’s veterans. Similar ceremonies occurred earlier in England and France, where an unknown soldier was buried in each nation’s highest place of honor (in England, Westminster Abbey; in France, the Arc de Triomphe). These memorial gestures all took place on November 11, giving universal recognition to the celebrated ending of World War I fighting at 11 a.m., November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). The day became known as “Armistice Day.” Armistice Day officially received its name in America in 1926 through a Congressional resolution. It became a national hol-

iday 12 years later by similar Congressional action. If the idealistic hope had been realized that World War I was “the War to end all wars,” November 11 might still be called Armistice Day. But only a few years after the holiday was proclaimed, war broke out in Europe. Sixteen and one-half million Americans took part. Four hundred seven thousand American service members died; and of these, more than 292,000 in battle. In 1954, Congress passed a bill that President Eisenhower signed, which proclaimed November 11 as Veterans Day. “Let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting and enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain,” Eisenhower said. Although most federal holidays are celebrated on Mondays, to ensure that federal employees can enjoy three day weekends with their friends and families, Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. This observance of Veterans Day on November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
