Naples Comes Out as Top Cats Against Hohenfels’ Tigers By Matthew Farrugia, Naples High School Media Team

The Naples Wildcats football team came away with a win at Saturday’s homecoming game against the Hohenfels Tigers. Going into this game, many were worried because the Tigers outranked us; however, all doubt was quickly crushed once the teams got on the field. The Wildcats are a much larger team then the Tigers and as an added plus, had the home field advantage along with all the spirit from the past week’s homecoming festivities. It was like watching last year’s Naples team all over again once they were on the field. Their defense held the Tigers back and stopped them from advancing far on the field, especially during the first half. Senior Miles Davis led the Naples defense with five tackles. see NAPLES FOOTBALL Page 13

Captain’s Corner By Capt. Scott Gray NSA Commanding Officer

This week we say farewell to Rear Adm. Tony and Mrs. Colleen Gaiani and welcome Rear Adm. Jack and Mrs. Chris Scorby. As the Regional Commander for Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia, Admiral Gaiani has superbly led this dynamic region over the past three years. The challenges he faced during his tenure have been daunting. From ongoing military operations, to contingency support, to growth in Bahrain and Djibouti, to setting the stage for forward deployed naval forces in Rota, Spain, he has time and time again enabled our Navy’s continued success in this critical region. On behalf of the NSA community and the many from around the region who have benefitted from your outstanding example, thank you for your principled leadership. Colleen – thank you for all you have done to support this community and our Sailors. A true lady, you have been the epitome of dignity, grace and style. We wish the Gaiani’s fair winds and following seas as they transition back to the United States and retire after a distinguished naval career! As of the writing of this article, we are sorting through the impacts of the government shutdown. Hopefully, by the time this is published on Friday, the shutdown will be a bad memory. However, we must be prepared in case the shutdown goes on for some time. I urge all leaders to be mindful of the impacts, especially on those who are furloughed and whose pay will be impacted. The shutdown will likely create hardship for many of our personnel and leaders at all levels need to be engaged and proactive to help minimize/avoid negative repercussions. NSA will continue to provide updates via PAO Notes, AFN, Facebook, web pages, etc. as information becomes available. I will be hosting a quarterly Town Hall meeting at Support Site on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. at the Reel Time Theater. This will be one of over two dozen Town Hall meetings held during my tenure, and I welcome the opportunity to speak directly to the community about all the great things going on here. While many may follow social networks such as Facebook pages that serve as conduits for community discussion, I encourage everyone to use official channels including the ICE system or Town Hall meetings to make comments regarding the community. I encourage all who are able to make it out for the Town Hall at the Support Site theater to do so. We are also trying a new approach: a Radio Town Hall weekly during the latter half of my Friday morning radio show on AFN’s 106.0 The Eagle. A Radio Town Hall will give the NSA Naples community the ability to come to me directly with questions and concerns on a weekly basis. If you have an issue that you’d like me to address, please consider using the radio show as an appropriate forum. Listeners will be able to call in live to the radio show Friday mornings from 7 to 7:45 a.m. by dialing the AFN studio line at DSN 629-6925 or 081-811-6925. Also, feel free to use AFN’s Facebook page during that hour, or the NSA Naples Facebook page at any time during the week—we’ll pull together questions and I will answer them Friday mornings. One new initiative I am very excited about at Capo is the founding of a Women’s Network, designed specifically to address the needs and concerns of all active duty women in the area, regardless of rate or rank. In the last two weeks, inaugural meetings were held and an impressive turnout of more than two dozen women assembled for lunch, introductions, and a look forward at professional development, mentoring and networking opportunities. Subsequent meetings will be held monthly over lunch and encompass a wide variety of topics, from banking to uniform standards to domestic assault awareness. I fully support this project, and am energized for all those that would attend, especially our junior enlisted females. For more information on the Women’s Network, including upcoming meeting times and locations, please contact NSA Naples’ own CMC, MACM Nancy Brewton, at 626-5396. There are many other great Sailor-driven events on the horizon, including activities with the various petty officer associations, CSADD, and the CPO mess. Get involved where you can and make connections that count!

Support Site Recycling Program

Oct. 10-11: East Parking Garage Closure

Support Site residents are requested to continue working to improve waste segregation. Wet waste, also known as compost, is being segregated at a very low rate and needs everyone's attention. Wet waste includes food, soiled paper towels, tea bags, biodegradable kitty litter, and any other biodegradable item. When taking waste to the collection sites, please only put non-recyclable waste or non-segregated waste in the black and green containers labeled "non-recyclable.” Placing the wrong type of waste in recyclable containers contaminates the waste and requires the entire container to be disposed of as non-recyclable.

Capodichino East Parking Garage bottom level (2nd basement level) and the block of 2 hour parking spots will be closed from 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10 until 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11 for the U.S. 6th Fleet Change of Command. For more information, please contact Lt. Cmdr. Glenn Wright at DSN 626-1833.

Scheduled AMI Power Outages Power outages are needed to install new power meters in several buildings at Capodichino in order to remotely control power consumption. All outages will be four hours in duration. The schedule is as follows: Oct. 5 at 8 a.m. base-wide at Capo, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. for Admin I, II, and III buildings, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. for Supply Warehouse and West Parking Garage. For additional information, please contact Mr. Paolo Di Lieto at DSN 626-3930 or 081-568-3930.

Local Information Regarding Government Shutdown From NSA Naples Public Affairs

Since the U.S. government shut down Oct. 1, Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples continues to support key functions, while furloughing many Department of Defense civilian personnel. NSA Naples is maintaining security, fire, emergency medical, other essential services and support to military operations. Impacts to NSA Naples are as follows: • NSA Naples schools will remain in session. All athletic travel through Oct. 12 has been funded with FY13 funds and will still occur. • Commissary and NEX stores are keeping regular hours. • U.S. Naval Hospital Naples continues to provide patients with family-centered care with no disruption to outpatient clinical or specialty services. The Emergency Department and inpatient ward continues to provide 24/7 access to emergency and tertiary care. • Fleet and Family Support Services will retain their clinical team for normal operations. • Sexual Assault Prevention and Response are unaffected. • All post offices, CMVRO, TaxFree, Personal Property and Vehicle Processing Center offices will operate normally. • Security will limit swipe badge issue and updates to Tuesdays only. Delays can be expected in processing special event force protection plans. • RLSO services for legal assistance appointments and sojourn-

er’s permits will not be affected. Customer services for base access requests, logistical support letters etc. will continue, but see increased processing times. • NSA Naples N6 response time will increase and certain services will be unavailable during the shutdown. • Safety will be open regular hours. Motorcycle safety classes will be cancelled. Other safety services will be impacted and largely unavailable. • Air Operations and Air Terminal are maintaining their normal schedules. • Housing is open regular hours, though members may see an increase in response times. Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA) for personnel PCSing will be delayed and members are advised to plan accordingly. • MWR facilities and services will continue as scheduled. • Protocol, Public Affairs and the Business Services Office will not be affected. • All religious services and functions are still available from the military staff. Religious Education Programs for Roman Catholic and Protestant congregations are affected. • AFN Naples will continue to meet all of their command information needs via AFN Europe radio, Web and social media services. Because of mandatory staff reductions at the AFN Broadcast Center, AFN reduced TV to AFN|news and the Pentagon Channel (during briefings). All AFN Broadcast Center satellite

radio services distributed via AFN decoder will be available with some schedule modifications. AFN will resume normal service as soon as possible. • The Navy College Office will be open on an intermittent basis and can be reached at DSN: 626-6681 or nco.naples@eu.navy.mil. Central Texas College, the University of Maryland University College and the University of Oklahoma offices will be open during the furlough. The Virtual Education Center will be closed during the shutdown and unable to process TA applications. Sailors should, however, enter their TA applications into their portals in order to gain a priority for processing when the furlough ends. There will be no cancellation of on-site classes at Capo and Naples High School due to the shutdown. DANTES testing will be cancelled. NSA Naples will continue to notify the community regarding an end to the shutdown via the PAO Notes distribution, the NSA Naples Facebook page at Facebook.com/ NSANaples, and the CNIC webpage at http://www.cnic.navy.mil/ regions/cnreurafswa/installations/n sa_naples.html. ‘Clean Up the World’ Spreads through Campania Last weekend, more than 30,000 volunteers in Campania adhered to a clean up initiative in more than 400 areas. It was the 21st edition of Clean Up the World, an initiative organized by the Italian environmental association in collaboration with the Italian State RAI TV. The Land of Fires is an area between the province of Naples and Caserta that has becoming a symbol of illicit trafficking in toxic waste and fires. Volunteers recovered tons of tires from the area. In Naples, volunteers cleaned up the cliff on the seaside front and the gardens in the neighborhood of Scampia.

Businessman Buys Budelli Island

A businessman from New Zealand paid €2, 94 million for Budelli island, part of the La Maddalena island group between Sardinia and Corsica. The island is one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean, home to the “Pink” beach, a national park and a protecting

ecosystem. Construction on the 1.6 square meter island is banned and access to the island is only permitted to a member of staff from the park’s authority. The island was bought at an auction process after the previous property company in Milan went bankrupt. However, the Ministry of Environment and Park Authority has the right to enforce the ‘right of pre-emption’, which allows them to buy the property for the same price paid at auction within 90 days.

Family Settles into Isolated Italian Village In Italy there are many isolated villages that have become deserted over recent decades. In the village of Lissa, located in the Liguria region, a boy was born for the first time in 67 years. The couple moved from north of Milan to this tiny village five years ago to change their lives. They loved the woods and also didn’t want to start a family in an industrialized zone. Local residents saw the blue ribbon on the couple’s house as a sign of hope.

Harvest festivals Porcini mushrooms This weekend, go back in time while relishing prized produce at the medieval town of Cusano Mutri. The town will pull out all stops for

the finale of their popular gastronomical event. Porcini mushrooms are a staple in Neapolitan cooking and their savory taste and soft texture are prominent in many local dishes. Don’t miss this opportunity to stock up on the freshest selections at reasonable prices. Log onto www.comunecusanomutri.it/, then link to the event through “Sagra dei Funghi.” Chestnuts Well-known for the produce, Montella in Avellino province invites all to the Chestnut Fest on Friday, Oct. 11. Entertainment is in store for visitors. Not only can you get your chestnuts roasted o’er an open fire, you can sample the multitude of chestnut cakes and cookies, buy some chestnut flour for making your own concoctions and if lady luck brings it, even a little chestnut beer. See event details at www.irpiniaturismo.it/. Black Truffles Bagnoli Irpino of Avellino province beckons everyone to their harvest fest on Oct 25-27. View, taste and purchase the town’s black truffles (also called “black diamonds” for their rarity) along with their chestnuts. Truffles, or “Tartufo” in Italian, are rare tuberous mushrooms that grow under the ground and are found by specially trained dogs (and hogs). Prized for their unique flavor they can sell for thousands of dollars per pound and a dish of pasta or risotto gets just a tiny grating over the top to bring out the exquisite taste. NEX Gives Back to Customers By Kristine M. Sturkie, Navy Exchange Service Command Public Affairs

The Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM) announced Sept. 27 that it has made some exciting changes to its second Navy Blue Holiday celebration. The Navy Blue Holiday is a time to celebrate the NEX's unique connection to the Navy and Navy families, emphasize Navy values and to give back to deserving NEX customers. "This year, our Navy Blue Holiday is going to be even bigger and better," said retired Rear Adm. Robert J. Bianchi, chief executive officer, NEXCOM. "We are very excited to bring our customers more savings, quality and value, and most importantly, say thank you for being a loyal customer of your NEX." The Navy Blue Holiday season will kick off this year on the Navy's 238th birthday Oct. 13. The kick-off includes one of the largest single customer giveaways ever! NEXCOM has partnered with its vendor community to give away 1,000 NEX $100 gift cards. Customers can enter for the drawing beginning Oct. 9 at their local NEX or online at www.myNavyExchange.com. "We are excited to be able to give away $100,000 in NEX gift cards to our customers," said Bianchi. "I know there are many other shopping options available. We are thrilled to be able to thank our customers for their support throughout the years. It is our honor to give back, because our mission is our customers." One thing that hasn't changed is that customers will continue to find a great selection of items in all price ranges including prestige brands, national mass brands and private brands at excellent savings, plus no sales tax on NEX purchases. Throughout the holiday season, the NEX will offer even more savings and promotions so customers can save even more. In addition, based on the success of last year's afloat Navy Blue Holiday sale, NEXCOM will once again be offering special pricing on the most popular gifts through its web store to Sailors and Marines at sea prior to Thanksgiving. From Nov. 24 - 27, afloat personnel will be able to take advantage of a sale designed just for them. "Once again, we tailored the items for sale to be ones that would appeal most to Sailors and Marines at sea," said Bianchi. "They will find electronics, video games, outerwear and holiday gifts that can be sent home to loved ones." Afloat Sailors and Marines can also sign up to win one of the $100 NEX gift cards that are being given away.

Local Sailors Get a ‘Taste of Home’

The “A Taste of Home” barbeque hosted by USO provided a home-cooked meal and brought Sailors together for an afternoon of food, music and fun last Thursday aboard Capodichino. “It’s great to spend an afternoon together and bring a little bit of home to the single Sailors here,” said Sabrina Pullido, area director for USO Naples. “The impact of this event is large and it allows people an outlet to support the community and our Sailors.” One of the main goals of the barbeque was to get Sailors out of the barracks to meet new people. “It’s all about the morale of our Sailors and combating a feeling of loneliness,” said Cmdr. Manuel A. Biadog, Chaplain for Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples, as he walked around handing out bags of Oreos. Liberty and Entertainment Manager Staci

Time for Your Flu Shot - or Mist Capt. Matthew W. Pommer, commanding officer of U.S. Naval Hospital Naples, receives his influenza vaccination. Anyone, both adults and children, needing a flu vaccine can contact the Immunization Clinic at DSN: 629-6282 or 081-811-6282. The clinic at U.S. Naval Hospital Naples is open Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.; and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Photo courtesy of USNH Naples Public Affairs)

Dietrich said Italy can be a difficult place to get used to at first and events like this help junior Sailors forge new friendships. “It’s definitely a morale booster,” said Masterat-Arms Seaman Apprentice Lindsay Darr, as she sat on the grass eating barbequed chicken. “This makes me so happy, I miss American food.” “It’s great to see the junior Sailors out here participating instead of just sitting in their rooms,” said Dietrich. “They can come out here and have a good time.” The event was not limited to single Sailors in the barracks; there was plenty of food and all were welcome from Sailors on duty taking a break to people passing by on their way to evening college classes. In addition to food and music, coupons for the commissary and free magazine subscriptions were given away to winners of a trivia contest. Several organizations from the area contributed to the barbecue’s success. The USO plans to hold a “Taste of Home” event every month.

TRICARE is Minimum Essential Coverage for Affordable Care Act By Douglas H Stutz, Naval Hospital Bremerton Public Affairs

There has been a steady stream of expected questions at Naval Hospital Bremerton's TRICARE Service Center concerning the pending Affordable Care Act. "We've had active duty as well as retirees asking about the Affordable Care Act and how it relates to their TRICARE coverage," said Renee Proctor-Brown, manager of the hospital’s TRICARE Regional Appointment Center. The Affordable Care Act, also known as the health care reform law, requires a person to maintain basic health care coverage called minimum essential coverage. Beginning in 2014, if a person does not have minimum essential coverage, a fee will have to be paid for each month not covered. "The main thing people need to understand is that TRICARE is an entitlement. The Affordable Care Act does not impact TRICARE, although TRICARE does meet all the minimum qualifications needed for the act," Proctor-Brown said. Proctor-Brown noted that although TRICARE already complies with many Affordable Care Act provisions, it has added a program to match the health care law's provisions extending health insurance coverage to dependent children until age 26, with the TRICARE Young Adult program from existing TRICARE Prime or Standard coverage. Even beneficiaries who have lost health care at up to age 23 and are enrolled in an institution of higher learning can now purchase coverage up to age 26. Proctor-Brown said the TRICARE program is considered minimum essential coverage. If a person is using any of the following health plan options, they have the coverage required by the health care reform law: TRICARE Prime, TRICARE Prime Remote, TRICARE Prime Overseas, TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas, TRICARE Standard and Extra, TRICARE Standard Overseas, TRICARE

For Life, TRICARE Reserve Select (if purchased), TRICARE Retired Reserve (if purchased), TRICARE Young Adult (if purchased)and US Family Health Plan. Additionally, a person has minimum essential coverage if they are covered by either transitional health plans such as Transitional Assistance Management Program (premium-free, 180 days) or Continued Health Care Benefit Program (if purchased, 18-36 months). Simply being eligible for premium-based TRICARE benefit plans such as TRICARE Young Adult (TYA), TRICARE Retired Reserve (TRR), TRICARE Reserve Select (TRS) and the Continued Health Care Benefit Program (CHCBP), does not constitute minimum essential coverage. Eligible beneficiaries must purchase and be in good standing, by paying their premiums to have coverage in force, to qualify for minimum essential coverage under these TRICARE programs. If a person qualifies for one of TRICARE's purchased plan options, then they will only meet the requirements for minimum essential coverage if they purchase it. It is recommended that everyone checks that they are getting the most affordable coverage for themselves and their family that best meets their health and wellness needs. The Health Insurance Marketplace is a new way to find health coverage that fits a person's budget and needs. Open enrollment begins October 1, 2013 with coverage beginning as early as January 1, 2014. A person can compare TRICARE's purchased plan options with their current employer's health insurance or other civilian options offered through the Health Insurance Marketplace at 800-318-2596, TTY: 855-889-4325 or, https://www.healthcare.gov Additionally, for those civilian government employees with Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB), they are covered by a plan that satisfies the requirement to maintain essential health coverage (MEC) for

each month. If a civilian government employee does not maintain MEC for each month or qualify for an exemption, then the Affordable Care Act requires that an individuals shared responsibility (including children) is to make a payment when filing his or her federal income tax return. The Department of the Navy, Office of Civilian Human Resources, notes that the Affordable Care Act does not change any regulation regarding eligibility to enroll in the FEHB. Employees who are on appointments that do not confer eligibility for FEHB are not eligible to make an election and are encouraged to review coverage options in the Health Insurance Marketplace. Although most health plan options already meet the requirements for minimum

essential coverage, those disenrolling from TRICARE and their dependents have the option of using the new Health Insurance Marketplace to get affordable coverage. They may get lower costs on monthly premiums or out-of-pocket costs. They could also be eligible for free or low-coat coverage through Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Beneficiaries who are eligible for, but have not purchased TRS, TYA, TRR or CHCBP, have several options for getting quality affordable health insurance: if qualified and eligible, purchase one of TRICARE's premium-based plans such as TRS, TYA, TRR or CHCBP; purchase coverage from a state Marketplace (beginning Oct. 1 for coverage Jan. 1, 2014); get coverage through a family member; get coverage through the

employer; get coverage from a federal program such as Medicare Part A or Veterans Affairs, etc., or coverage under a state Medicaid or Children's Health Insurance (CHIP) program; purchase any other coverage that qualifies as minimum essential coverage. "Those who have Medicare also are not impacted by the Affordable Care Act," ProctorBrown pointed out. It is also recommended that eligible beneficiaries are also qualified for other health insurance (OHI) may choose health care coverage through their TRICARE eligibility or OHI. The law requires most individuals and their dependents to have minimum essential coverage. Those TRICARE eligible beneficiaries that have a choice in health care coverage may elect the health care options that best meet their needs.

The Allied Joint Force Command Naples Joint Mobile Training Team (JMTT) recently completed a training mission to Baku, Azerbaijan from Sept. 15-21, 2013. Under the professional leadership of United Kingdom Warrant Officer Ian Venables, a team of instructors travelled to Baku, Azerbaijan and facilitated classroom-based leadership training. The team trained 34 non-commissioned officers (NCO) from the Azerbaijan Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marines. The training material covers various NCO development and

leadership topics including ethics, communication and counseling. The JMTT training material doesn't include any country-specific doctrine and is a based on the NATOSchool and SWISS-NCOSchool leadership courses. “The mission to Azerbaijan was a really great experience,” said Venables. “We met some really experienced and professional NCOs. I hope they got as much from the training as I did.” The JFC Naples team members included: UK Army Staff Sgt. Giuseppe Ruggiero, German Navy Chief Petty Officer Christian Hennings, and U.S Air Force Tech. Sgt.

DeRon Hudson. The main mission of the training team is to travel into Non-NATO countries and introduce a different kind of training to their armed forces. This was Naples fourth mission this year and it directly supports one of Joint Force Command’s key tasks of engaging with partners. The team successfully delivered the training content, established relationships and shared ideas with other NCOs from a valuable partner country. Overall, the Naples JMTT team graduated 34 Azerbaijan NCOs and fulfilled the motto of the JMTT program: "We train our own!"

NATO Lions RFC hosted Salerno Arechi RFC for the LIONS' first game of the 2013-2014 season, Setp. 22, at Carney Park. Arechi is an Italian 'Serie Three' league team that recently produced a publicity video, racing through their local shopping mall, in full kit, integrating local children with the rugby ball to raise awareness of rugby in Southern Italy. The Lions finished the 2012-2013 season with a winning streak of nine games and new head coach Lt. Cmdr. Mick Cowie Royal Navy had a crop of players, some new, some experienced and some novices, from which to pick. The Lions got off to a good start scoring 3 points off a drop goal by Stephane Belleguic. Things rapidly changed as the Arechi team lifted a gear and scored 2 converted tries over the next 8 minutes leaving the Lions struggling 3-14 after 10 minutes play. The Lions hit back twice with a good piece of footwork by Petty Officer Franco Garcia and Petty Officer Shane Anderson’s powerful drive through a tackle to go over the line. The score was now 15-14. The following 20 minutes was a battle of wits and scrums in the centre of field. On 50 minutes, Arechi continued their strong attack against an error-filled Lions and scored their fifth try. Now at 15-33, Lions needed to prop up the defence and brought on the strongest centres to try to punch holes through the Arechi forwards. This tactic worked at least twice in the next 10 minutes, however to drop the ball when in clean sight of the line summed up Lions' day. At the last minute, Lions were attacking the line and second row, Matt Hitchcock scored a commendable consolation try to make the final score 27-45.

Kids Talk: Let’s Play a Game By Charis Jacobson, 8th grade

“Okay, so the point of this game is to get something bigger or better. I’ll split you up into six groups and you have twenty minutes to go around Support Site and trade a penny I’m going to give your group for something bigger or better. Any questions? All right, let’s get started.” Arturo finishes explaining the game and starts to split us up into groups. Where am I? I’m in the fellowship hall on Support Site with about forty five other seventh through twelfth graders. Arturo starts giving us numbers and sending us to separate corners where our group leaders are waiting. I’m in group four. We file out the door and Arturo gives us a penny. Every Wednesday I look forward to 5:30 p.m. when I get to attend Club Beyond. Here each week I come for a dinner, fun games, and time to hang out with my friends. Most importantly, Arturo delivers a thought-provoking message from the Bible. “So where should we start?” I ask. “Let’s head to the coffee shop first,” suggests our leader. “I know some of the workers there;

maybe they can give us a coffee for a penny.” Arturo is originally from the Dominican Republic and speaks with a Spanish accent. He is the Club Beyond leader and is happy, smart, talented, and a pretty fun guy. When I think of Club Beyond, Arturo is always an important part. Club simply wouldn’t be the same without him. Club Beyond is really important to me. It’s the perfect youth group—where fun, friends, and faith connect, not to mention food; a very important part of life for growing teens!

We’ve Got Spirit By Kate Vitulli

Lady Wildcats Retain Undefeated Record By Aundrea Hall

The Naples Lady Wildcats pulled together as a team and won both matches Friday night and Saturday morning against MMI (Mary Mount International). Friday night was home coming weekend for Naples High School and the Wildcats hit virtually every open spot on the court they could find and swept the Royals winning 25-8, 25-7, and 25-15. Naples came back Saturday morning with no mercy and scores of 25-7, 9-25, 25-10 and 25-9. Courtney Fukumitsu came out serving strong with 11 aces. Keylee Soto had 7 aces, Vicky Krause and Aundrea Hall had 6 aces, and Amilia Espiet contributed 3 aces for the team. The Lady Wildcats' serve receive was phenomenal. Carina had 8 digs, Espiet got 6 and Jenni Langstraat, Seirra Dye, Lexi Buell, Amanda Jones, and Skylar Evans all had 1 dig each. Great passes helped out our two starting setters obtain assists, Fukumistu with 14 and Soto with 11. Leading the Wildcats with kills on Saturday morning was Vicky Krause with 14, Leina Esperon with 11, Hall with 6, Langstraat with 2, Evans, Dye, Espiet, and Harley Williams each had 1 kill each. The Lady Wildcats are coming together as a team and believing in each other as they prepare for this weekend's double-header against our rivals and toughest competition this year, AOSR and Vicenza on Friday the Oct. 4th. Wear pink for the "Pink Out,” raising awareness of breast cancer. Naples Lady Wildcats remain undefeated with a record of 4-0 in conference play.

“We’ve got spirit; yes, we do! We’ve got spirit; how ‘bout you?” The spirit and energy could be felt in Naples as cheerleading campers took the floor. The Naples American High School Wildcat Cheerleaders held a cheerleading camp for elementary and middle school students to teach the fundamental elements of the sport and perform a routine for their parents and the football crowd. Kindergarten through fifth graders came on Saturday, Sept. 21, to learn spirit chants, a cheer, a dance, and some basic tumbling and stunting skills. The sixth through eighth graders came on both Friday and Saturday to learn more advanced skills in these respective areas. The camp participants enjoyed lunch following the camp and then performed during halftime of the high school football game versus Bamberg/Schweinfurt. T-shirts were provided for the participants. The Wildcat Cheerleaders said they hope to see everyone back for the upcoming camp to be held during the winter basketball season.

National Fire Protection Month By Jeff Arter, American Red Cross Disaster Action Team Chair. October is National Fire Protection Month and this year Fire Prevention Week is being observed Oct. 6-12. Home fires are everyone's fight. The Red Cross responds to a disaster every eight minutes and nearly all of these are home fires. House fires are the worst disaster threat to families in the United States. They can happen quickly, devastating lives and property. The U.S. Fire Administration states there are as many as 365,000 residential fires reported in the U.S. every year, which cause more than $6 billion in property loss. The American Red Cross is focused on promoting fire safety and prevention. We should all practice fire safety throughout the year. The Red Cross recommends families and households develop a fire-escape plan and practice it several times each year with all members of the household. Each occupant should know at least two ways to escape from every room in their house and have a designated place to meet outside in case of a fire. Safety steps we can follow include: • In case of a fire, follow the escape plan that your family has developed. • Once you are out of the house, stay out and call (on base) 911, or commercial number 081-568-4911. Italian fire is 115, police is 112, ambulance is 118. • Install smoke alarms on each level of your home and inside bedrooms. Replace the batteries at least once a year. Perfom monthly tests of the smoke alarm by pushing the test button that is located on the alarm. • Prepare and have handy a family emergency kit that you can grab on your way out of the home. You can go to www.redcross.org for further information on home fire safety. The local Naples American Red Cross Disaster Action Team is available to assist the community in coping with a home fire. For more information, stop by the Naples American Red Cross office in Admin II at Capodichino or send a message to arcnaples@redcross.org.

Boys’ Volleyball Team Sweeps MMI Royals By Sam Murdock, Co-captain.

The Naples boys’ volleyball team took on the MMI Royals last weekend. The Wildcats dominated both Friday 3-0 (25-5, 25-9, 25-9) and Saturday 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 2522), sweeping the Royals. Stand out players included Sam Murdock and Josh Hensy, who managed to keep the crowd on their feet the whole game with their relentless spikes. Setter Austin Bain led the team in assists, and

libero DJ Langtraat led the defense with flawless serve receive. The Wildcats were able to keep the Royals unbalanced with power from opposite hitter, Michael Curtain. Middles Kalen Murphy and Marc Davis also contributed immensely. Having defeated the runner-up from last year's championship game, the Wildcats appear to be a dominating presence in DoDDS volleyball. This weekend the men will play four games, two against AOSR and Vicenza.

Relationships are complicated. Growing up, even in Latin America, I was very familiar with the complicated relationship between “those nice guys” and the elusive girl who kept falling for the “other guys.” A very sad, tragic even, and yet far more common storyline than we realize. Anger, powerlessness, sympathy and even feelings of injustice accentuate this melodrama. However as a father of five girls, I have to rethink this whole Mr. Nice Guy paradigm taking into account the recipient of all these contained feelings… the girl. Is Mr. Nice Guy as nice as we all believe him to be, or is he an entitled self-serving impostor seeking to collect his dues after he has manufactured a plastic friendship? Perhaps the answer is somewhere in the middle. Let us think this through for a moment. The root of sympathy is not in the selfless acts of this Mr. Nice Guy, but in the subtle notion that this guy deserves something. In guy terms, he ought to “get some.” But why? To really love someone is to allow the other person to be free and make decisions, whether or not we like the outcome of these decisions is called “life.” Real people make real decisions, some are favored and some are rejected, and life goes on. No one, especially when it comes down to women, owes anyone – even Mr. Nice Guy -

preferential treatment. To expect, and God forbid to enforce it, is not only wrong, but selfish and arrogant. Instead of taking on this Hollywood-hyped role, why not rather become a real human being with real relationships? It is in real relationships, group interactions, trips, sports, camps, and outdoors where real people connect, learn social cues, and learn to establish healthy connections. This is not learned from watching a screen, leaving anonymous comments or playing video games. Life, people and women are real, not a game with cheat-modes. Yes, relationships are complicated, but this is no excuse to superimpose our expectations on others. Real love is not selfish, but freeing and generous. Let us become real people, and expect nothing less from our peers and significant others. Mr. Nice Guys make good and interesting movie scripts, but transparent, life-giving and secure people are the ones who really thrive in real life.

Obtaining your Sojourner Permit Italian law requires all foreign personnel working or living within Italy, other than an active-duty member under military orders, to obtain a Sojourner Permit within eight days of arrival in Italy. This is different from a visa, which is merely an approval for entry into the country. All applicants over 14 years of age must apply in person, as each person's signature is required at the time of application. NATIONALS OF ANY STATE OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY COMING TO ITALY DO NOT REQUIRE ANY VISA OR SOJOURNER PERMIT. As part of the Area Orientation process, the U.S. Region Legal Service Office (RLSO EURAFSWA) assists in the preparation and oversees the acquisition of the Sojourner Permit for all personnel attached to U.S. Navy commands in the Naples area. Army and Air Force personnel stationed at JFC must apply through the Carabiniere at the JFC Provost Marshall's Office, Building L. Contact Connie Henderson, RLSO EURAFSWA liaison advisor, at 081-568-4639 for more information.

ASC Holds Fall Soccer Festival By Brian Quirk

The American Soccer Club (ASC) of Napoli's Fall Soccer Festival was recently held at Carney Park with more than four hundred Italian players and parents attending the twoday inaugural event. The tournament was created to further develop relationships with local Italian soccer clubs, who over the past several years have graciously hosted ASC to play games on their fields. The tournament kicked of with an opening ceremony where the U.S. Naval Forces Europe Band played the Italian and American national anthems. The tournament included three local Italian Soccer Clubs: Scuola Calcio Juve Domizia, Atletico Fummo Giugliano, and Nuova Casale. There were three age groups from each club who competed in the event. Four different soccer fields were used inside Carney Park and games were running on a constant basis. On the first day of the tournament each team

played three games and based on wins and loses, all teams were ranked for the second day of games. On the final day of games, the 1st and 2nd place teams in each division played for the championship and the other teams played a semi-final game. At the culmination of the tournament, medals were handed out to all players from the tournament. The Italian Soccer Club directors said they value the collaboration between ASC and their clubs and look forward to continuing this in the future. "We all know that soccer is a passion in Italy and they produce some of the best soccer players in the world,” said Brian Quirk, ASC president. “The opportunity for our ASC players to play against local Italian soccer players is a unique experience that they will hopefully look back upon fondly for the rest of their lives." The tournament is just the beginning for the ASC season. This year, all teams will be enrolled and playing in official Italian soccer leagues in the local area.

NAPLES FOOTBALL Naples held back the Tigers’ offense and then scored two touchdowns, putting the Wildcats in the lead going into the second half. Juwan English, Cameron Copeland, and Joyontray Grogan all contributed touchdowns toward the win. In the third quarter Naples still controlled the game but Hohenfels came back roaring for a fight, which resulted in a close fourth quarter. In the end, the Wildcats stuck it out and won the game 2519. The game demonstrated that even though Naples lost most of last year’s starters, they continue to be a team to be reckoned with.
