Phelps grant helping children swim, grow By MCSA Erik Luebke, Navy Public Affairs Support ElementEast Detachment Europe
hildren at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples are learning new skills in the pool as a result of a recent grant from the Michael Phelps Foundation. The Olympic gold medalist’s foundation awarded $16,750 to NSA Naples’ Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) as part of the foundation’s “im” youth swim program. For the past two months, children at NSA Naples have been receiving special instruction as a part of the “im” program, which is designed to encourage healthy and active lifestyles by offering water-safety courses, recreational pool activities and swim training. While the first iteration of the “im” program at NSA Naples is now coming to a close after two months of lessons, there will be another iteration of the swim class this summer, which will be incorporated into MWR’s summer day camp program. The summer program will last from June 25 to August 18 and is available for children in grades one through six. “It was fun learning how to float on my back, swim underwater and how to jump in the water without plugging my nose,” said Ryan Stiglitz, one of the children who participated in the April-May class. see SWIM Page 5

Orman’s presentation, known as “The Money Class,” drew from her award-winning financial expertise as she interacted with community members about their current and future financial plans. “I came to Italy to speak to the men and women of the U.S. armed forces who are making sacrifices for our country’s freedom,” said Orman. “You can be both a better service member and a better person if you know how to properly manage your

money, and I’m here to tell you about how you can do that.” During hour-long presentations May 22 and May 23, Orman gave a brief history of her rise to financial prominence before outlining ways that service members can invest in their futures and save money each month. Orman did not hold back any punches when expressing her views on what it takes to save and invest money intelligently. “If you’ve learned anything from living in Italy, it’s that you don’t need a big car or expensive things to enjoy life to the fullest,” Orman said to the audience. “Money cannot do anything on its own – it needs people to control it. Powerful people accrue money, while powerless people repel it. To be powerful with money, you have to be debt-free.” see ORMAN Page 4
