The Naples Tiger Sharks had 25 swimmers make the trip to Lakenheath, England to represent the team in the second swim meet of the season, Oct. 4. "Despite having less than half of our team at Lakenheath, we pulled together and swam some fast relays and impressive individual events,” said Sydney Bidwell, team captain. “I am very proud of the sportsmanship and discipline that our team exhibited at the meet." The meet had a late 5:45 p.m. start, which kept some swimmers in the pool until 10 p.m. Reagan Butler, Brandon Oestereicher, Alex Ruppe, Leslie Traucht and Stephen Traucht took first place in all of their individual events, earning 30 points each for the team. Ingrid Bidwell, Trenton Butler, Sydney Milton, Sarah Oestereicher, Zachary Oestereicher, Carly Sharp and Lindsey Sharp took first place in two of their individual events. See TIGER SHARKS Page 12

AFN Conducting Streaming Survey – Help Shape the Future of AFN

By Capt. Doug Carpenter NSA Naples Commanding Officer

The Naples Wildcats football team had a great homecoming win against the Vicenza Cougars Saturday. Thank you to everyone who came out to support the team and congratulations to the Wildcats! They’ll be hosting Aviano for tomorrow’s game. The Tiger Sharks swim team held their own in the pool in Lakenheath, England last weekend and we had more swimmers getting personal best times thanks to head coach Jane Higgins’ excellent coaching. I’ll be heading down to Sigonella with the team for this weekend’s Double Dip meet with a swimming Pentathlon following Saturday’s regular meet. Congrats to some impressive running from our cross country team, the boys and girls wins in tennis and the dominant showing from our girls’ volleyball team – and their first place standing for Italy. It was a great homecoming weekend for our Wildcats! On Friday’s radio show, you were able to hear lots of great information and resources from our Fleet and Family Support Center’s Reena Patel. For Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Reena introduced a challenge for community members to share the different ways they keep their relationships respectful, safe and positive. You may see that challenge going around base and if you have something you’d like to share, send a message to www.Facebook.com/NSANaples and we will close out the month with a collection of great ideas from our community. A Couples Communication 101 class is being held on Tuesday at FFSC. Anyone in a relationship is welcome to register and attend these classes designed to support safe and loving interactions for our couples. They cover a lot of great topics during the course. We are finishing up Fire Prevention Week tomorrow, and I’d like to thank our Fire Department for setting up so many events to help raise awareness. It was great to hear about Sparky visiting the school and heading to the NEX to help get the message out. The live stove fire demonstrations are always an effective way to share the visual impact and ease with which a fire can get out of control if not monitored. Maintenance performs smoke alarm checks periodically on the Support Site, but I encourage each of you to follow this year’s theme of “Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month.” When smoke alarms fail to operate and don’t help prevent home fire deaths, it is usually because the batteries are disconnected or dead. Please take the couple moments each month and ensure yours are working. Today we welcome Sailors and Marines to Naples who have been operating forward aboard USS Bataan for eight long months. Please extend your hospitality and share with them the Naples Community spirit and pride. I need to pass a big thanks to MWR, USO and our Religious Ministries team for setting up travel and cultural opportunities for these service members. For many of you this will be a four day weekend and I encourage everyone to go out and see the sights, enjoy the fall temperatures, catch more Wildcats sports, and most importantly – be safe.

American Forces Network (AFN) is asking for your help to shape the future of how they deliver entertainment, news and sports programming to their audience. AFN is now in the exploratory stage of also delivering programming to its audience via streaming and on-demand services. They need to know what you would like to see and how you would like to get it. Go to www.MyAFN.net and click on “AFN Streaming Survey” to take part or visit www.surveymonkey.com/s/afnstream. The survey takes about five minutes and will have long-term impacts on how AFN will continue to bring a ‘touch of home’ to its audience.

Support Site Recycling Coordination Lt. These two areas are no longer designated pick-up points, so refrain from leaving waste in them. Residents at Lake Como Argue over Noise Environmental authorities from Arpa sent a fine to the town council of Bellano, on the shores of Lake Como after some local residents complained that thundering cascades in a waterfall in a local canyon are so loud that they can not watch television without closing their windows. Bellano has about 3,000 inhabitants and some of them living near the canyon complain about the noise, while others consider themselves lucky to have a spectacular natural attraction. The wa-

terfall has been a tourist attraction for centuries and tourists are able to explore the canyon on suspended walkways. Locals have blamed the council for this problem because the water flow of the torrent is used to power a small hydroelectric plant and can be regulated artificially. The mayor refused to pay the fine of €650 saying that the waterfall is only switched on at the weekends when there are tourists. The mayor also said the town council is not responsible of the waterfall but provincial governement and the company that runs the hydroelectric facility are.

In keeping with this month’s chromatic foliage, a renowned cultural venue downtown has programmed brilliant consecutive toe dancing events to kick start its theater season. Meanwhile, some Campanian towns are currently rejoicing their bumper crops or fruits of their labor with culinary and musical diversions. So, if you’re looking for some Pre-Halloween treats, consider these local “taste the culture” delights this weekend onwards. Incidentally, should your Columbus Weekend itinerary include the city of Genoa, where the young Christopher Columbus is said to have lived, be sure to take in the Medieval Costume Parade on Sunday afternoon. Sponsored by the local Comitato Nazionale per Colombo, the event commemorates the era when the famous navigator lived. To see the Casa di Colombo, an 18th c reconstructed building currently used as a museum, it is near Piazza Ferraris, a pleasant square for sightseeing and shopping.

woodsy and vigorous flavor of the mentioned produce against the backdrop of Cusano Mutri’s medieval ambiance in Benevento province. • Black Truffles Called “tartufo” in Italian, Bagnoli Irpino in Avellino province will cast the spotlight on their “black diamonds” Oct. 24-26. Growing under ground, truffles are rare tuberous mushrooms only found by specially trained dogs and hogs. Primarily prized for their unique flavor, the crop can sell for thousands of dollars per pound, making them “among the most expensive edible mushrooms on the planet,” according to culinary mavens. Just a tiny grating over the top of a pasta dish or risotto brings out its exquisite gusto. Also, when compared to white truffles, the aroma of black of truffles intensify rather than diminish when heated up. Referring to the slated dates, the town will simultaneously celebrate its rich harvest of chestnuts, affording convenience to those who missed celebrations of the produce at other Campanian towns. Energy Conservation Energy Action Month From the NSA Naples Energy Management Team

October marks Energy Action Month. This month is designed to promote energy and water conservation practices throughout the Federal government. The goal is to not only raise awareness but also take action by showing the Federal government will play an important role as the nation shifts toward more clean energy. Federal employees have the power to make the transition to clean energy a reality. Some simple tips to save energy include: - Turn computer monitors off at night and during the day when they aren’t being used for extended periods of time. - Get into the habit of turning off lights when you leave the room. - When weather permits, open windows to take the place of air conditioning. Turn off window air conditioners when you leave a room for several hours.

Cuma Regional Forest Located in the Phlegrean Fields, the forest is enveloped in legends for its proximity to the ruins of the first Greek settlement on mainland Italy as well as to the mythical Cave of the C0umaean Sibyl, a priestess and prophetess in ancient times. Virgilian tradition holds the soothsayer assisted the Trojan hero Aeneas to communicate with his deceased father. In addition, the poet tells us Aeneas descended into the underworld through one of the entrances along Lago Averno. While on site, enjoy a hike through the woods then relish refreshing and panoramic views of Ischia. More details at www.forestedellacampania.it .

WELCOME TO NAPLES

Chief of naval Operations (CnO) Adm. Jonathan greenert, left, and Master Chief Petty Officer of the navy (MCPOn) Mike Stevens hold a live worldwide navy all-hands call. (Photo by MC1 Jessica Bidwell)

CNO and MCPON Host Live All Hands Call By MC3 Jules Stobaugh, Defense Media Activity

The Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) joined Sailors from across the fleet to host a worldwide Navy birthday all-hands call Oct. 7 at Defense Media Activity, Fort George G. Meade, Md. Adm. Jonathan Greenert and MCPON Mike Stevens spoke about retirement, CPO 365, uniform changes, sea duty, and other Navy topics with a live studio audience, as well as Sailors from around the world via satellite and social media. "The centerpiece of what we do today, and what we continue to do, is sea duty," said Greenert. "We've made some changes accordingly. It's arduous duty for many, and that's why we've increased sea pay this year. Deployments have increased some and we should acknowledge that and we have recently with hardship duty pay." The Navy leaders started the show by reenlisting 14 Sailors with their families and command leadership on hand. Then Sailors from Norfolk, San Diego, ships at sea, and even the International Space Station were able to ask questions via live satellite, phone calls and prerecorded messages. One of the first questions asked involved redesigning basic training. "We review the curriculum for boot camp all the time," said Greenert. "We look at: what do we want in the character of a Sailor, what do we want in the ethical nature of the Sailor, what are we missing in the fleet, and we've got

to strive to get that in there today. So it's about unit, not self." "We're always looking for opportunities to get better," said Stevens. "One of the things we're doing at RTC right now, in December, we will start to issue a portable, mobile, wireless device to our new recruits. We're going to start with about 200 Sailors -they'll get these devices and all the paperwork and manuals are going to be downloaded so that everything they need is ready and available all the time." Additionally, Stevens offered some guidance to a Sailor from Guam who asked for career advice. "It's about three things, and it's about doing these three things with excellence," said Stevens. "Number one: it's working hard, every single day, regardless of the task that you're assigned. It's about doing your very best, every time you're assigned a task." "Number two: stay out of trouble," added Stevens. "You can work hard, you can do the right thing for many, many years, but you could get in trouble one time, and you can compromise all that hard work." "Number three I believe to be the most important of all," said Stevens. "Be a good and decent person. Be a good and decent person to yourself, to your family, and to your shipmates and never to forget to always treat one another with dignity and respect." This year's theme for the Navy birthday is, "Thanking Those Who Support Us." "We should know that successes that we've achieved, we have not achieved alone. And we couldn't do what we do unless we have the

assistance from our family, from our friends, from our communities, from industry, and the organizations that support our Sailors," said Greenert. The CNO and MCPON closed the ceremony by cutting a Navy birthday cake with the youngest Sailor in the room, using a cutlass from the early 1800s attributed to Admiral David G. Farragut, the first admiral in the U.S. Navy.

Bataan is named for the 1942 Battle of Bataan, America's first land battle of World War II. The ship’s crew held a Bataan Death March Remembrance, April 9, to commemorate the 72nd anniversary of those lost, and those who survived the grueling 63-mile march. The Philippines were invaded by Japan after Pearl Harbor. Failing to repulse the Japanese at the beaches, American forces fell back to the Bataan peninsula. Cut off from all outside support, they fought without resupply or reinforcements and no hope of rescue for three months. The Battle of Bataan has several notable firsts and lasts. It was the first major land battle in which the new U.S. M1 Garand rifle was used and it was where Sgt. Jose Calugas earned the U.S. Army's first Medal of Honor in World War II. During the battle, Philippine Scouts performed the U.S. Army's last traditional horse cavalry charge. The battle ended with the largest surrender of American troops in history. They endured the Bataan Death March, a 63-mile forced march through scorching heat with little food or water. Of the 72,000 troops who started the march, only 54,000 made it to the prison camp as those who could not keep up due to injuries were shot or bayoneted. Less than half of those survivors lived to see the end of the war. Bataan is the flagship for the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group and is one of two U.S. naval vessels to have borne the peninsula’s name to memorialize the resistance during the early days of World War II.

Sailors and Marines Authorized Hardship Duty Pay By Chief of Naval Personnel Public Affairs

To compensate Sailors and Marines for extended deployments driven by normal peacetime requirements, Hardship Duty Pay - Tempo (HDP-T) will be paid to Sailors and Marines, active duty and reserve, deployed beyond 220 consecutive days, effective Sept. 17, 2014. The Department of the Navy HDP-T proposal, authorized by the Secretary of the Navy earlier this summer, was approved by the Department of Defense for two years. "The Navy and Marine Corps' unique ability to provide and maintain a global presence is made

possible by the hard work of our Sailors and Marines," said Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus. "For some time now, these men and women have met the significant demand for our forces without waver. As the need for our presence continues, Hardship Duty Pay - Tempo (HDP-T) is an important effort to further compensate our Sailors and Marines for their willingness to take on extended deployments and for the frontline role they continue to play in keeping our nation, and our world, safe." Sailors and Marines will receive HDP-T on a prorated daily basis of $16.50, not to exceed a monthly rate of $495, when they are operationally deployed beyond 220 consecutive days. For units currently deployed, like the USS Bataan Amphibious Ready Group and George H. W. Bush Strike Group consecutive days prior to Sept. 17 will count when determining eligibility for payment. Payment will not be made for deployments that concluded before Sept. 17. Military pay systems are being updated to handle payment of HDP-T; expected date of completion is by the end of the year. Sailors and Marines eligible for HDP-T as of Sept. 17 will accrue the pay and see it in their pay checks once the system update is complete. Additional details will be promulgated by service administrative messages in the coming weeks.

Rodriguez Pledges Every Effort to Protect Military from Ebola By Nick Simeone, Department of Defense News, Defense Media Activity

Everything possible will be done to mitigate risks of exposure to Ebola by U.S. military personnel deployed to Liberia to contain the epidemic, the commander of U.S. Africa Command said Oct. 7. There are no plans for the U.S. military to provide direct care to Ebola patients, Army Gen. David M. Rodriguez told reporters at the Pentagon. Personnel from the U.S. Naval Medical Research Center will, however test for Ebola at mobile labs from samples collected from area clinics and health care providers. • Trained to guard against exposure Rodriguez said the three or four people who will staff each lab will be trained to the highest level and will be prepared to guard against exposure. “They can operate in a nuclear, biological and chemical environment,” he noted. “They are specifically trained to do that, and that's their primary skill set.” Pressed by reporters to explain the risks to Americans operating the mobile labs, Rodriguez strongly discounted the likelihood of contamination. “It’s a very, very high standard that these people have operated in all their lives, and this is their primary skill,” he emphasized. “This is not just medical guys trained to do this.” • National security priority Seven such labs are expected to be set up in Liberia for Ebola testing. The U.S. military presence in the West African nation is expected to grow to up to 4,000, with personnel establishing a hospital facility and providing logistics and engineering support, as well as training of up to 500 health care workers per week to help treat patients and prevent the spread of the virus, which President Barack Obama yesterday called a national security priority. Seventeen Ebola treatment facilities are expected to be set up in Liberia by November, Rodriguez said, acknowledging that the pace of operations has been challenging. “Their whole nation is overwhelmed,” the general said. “Their health facilities are overwhelmed. That’s all broken down, so we have to bring in everything at the same time.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has called the Ebola outbreak in West Africa the largest in history, with more than 3,400 deaths reported. Nearly that number of cases alone has been reported in Liberia, where the disease continues to spread. • Ensuring safety of U.S. personnel About 240 Defense Department personnel are currently in the Liberian capital of Monrovia, and another 108 are in nearby Senegal in support of U.S government efforts to stop the spread of the virus. More personnel are expected to flow into the region in the coming days, and Rodriguez said everything will be done to ensure their safety. “By providing pre-deployment training, adhering to strict medical protocols while deployed and carrying out carefully planned reintegration measures based on risk and exposure,” the general told reporters, “I am confident that we can ensure our service members’ safety and the safety of their families and the American people.” Rodriguez said the U.S. military could be deployed to Liberia in significant numbers for up to a year to support efforts led by the U.S. Agency for International Development to stop the spread of the virus.

It has been several years since young Sawyer Nelson and the dedicated team at the Clearwater Marine Hospital, headed by Dr. Clay Haskett, rescued Winter. With the help of Dr. Cameron McCarthy, who developed a unique prosthetic tail for the injured dolphin, they were able to save her life. Yet their fight is not over. Winter's surrogate mother has passed away, leaving Winter without the only pool-mate she has ever known. However, the loss of Panama may have even greater repercussions for Winter, who, according to USDA regulations, cannot be housed alone, as dolphins' social behavior requires them to be paired with other dolphins.

My Emergency Preparedness Kit What do I need to have in it? By Sean M. Quinn, Emergency Management Officer for NSA Naples

Do you know what you should have in your kit to sustain you and your family following an emergency? How long should your kit last you? In addition to the Emergency Management staff of Naval Support Activity Naples, here are some online resources to help get your kit started. Take a look at each one and tailor your kit to meet your individual and family’s requirements. – Ready Navy: www.ready.navy.mil/BuildAKit/EmergencyKits/index.htm – FEMA’s Ready.gov: www.ready.gov/build-a-kit – The American Red Cross: http://upson.redcross.org/Media/checklist.pdf An emergency preparedness kit should sustain you and your family for at least three days. Because of the unique features and potential hazards here in Southern Italy, it is recommended you plan for one to two full weeks of consumables (food, water, batteries, etc.), in addition to the other items in the kit. This will help with you and your family’s immediate needs with minimal reliance on others. Another key point to consider is the portability of your kit. This may be the most challenging factor in planning for and assembling your kit. If we were to remain in our homes during and after an emergency event, we need to make sure our kits are accessible. In this case, the kit can be stored and maintained in large containers on a cabinet. However, depending upon the type and severity of the emergency event, we may be required to evacuate our homes, or even the area. In this situation our emergency kit must be scaled down to the supplies necessary to sustain us for approximately three days. We must also plan for a method of packing and carrying our emergency kit. One suggestion is to place the contents of your kit into a portable container(s) and store them. Another is to have the portable containers immediately available to pack the supplies you have stored in larger containers or cabinet. The type of portable containers you use can be backpacks, small to medium luggage with wheels, tear-resistant bags, etc. The key to portability is just that – don’t pack your emergency evacuation kit in a container you cannot lift or carry. Also, take full advantage of sharing the load among capable family members as much as reasonably possible. The most effective way to minimize the additional stress of an emergency event in our lives is to prepare ourselves and our families as much as possible through discussions and development of our family’s emergency plan and the assembly of our emergency kit. The following resources are for parents to use in getting their children involved in the planning and preparations through their understanding of the facts: – Ready Navy Kids: www.ready.navy.mil/Kids/index.htm – FEMA’s Fun & Games for Kids: www.ready.gov/kids – National Fire Protection Association: www.sparky.org/index.html Over the past couple of years we have participated in various earthquake drills, and we will continue to do so in the future. These events offer us an opportunity to educate ourselves and one another about the likelihood of an earthquake here, and the importance of preparing ourselves to get through them. Consider the “what if’s” associated with an earthquake and what you need to do to prepare your emergency plan and build your kit. For additional information, please contact your command’s Emergency Management staff or visit www.cnic.navy.mil/Naples and click the ‘Operations and Management’ tab.

The severity of an emergency event may be significant, and resources may be extremely limited and not immediately available. At a minimum, your emergency kit should have the supplies listed below. Plan for and monitor expiration dates of all kit contents. ❑ Water (one (1) gallon per person, per day stored in easy to carry containers)(Recommend rotating/replacing every 6 months) ❑ Food (Non-perishable, easy to prepare items) ❑ Baby/Infant Supplies ❍ Diapers ❍ Wipes ❍ Bottles ❍ Food ❍ Formula ❍ Pacifiers ❍ Clothing ❍ Blanket(s) ❑ Flashlight ❑ Radio (Battery or hand-crank powered)(Make sure the radio can receive AFN broadcasts) ❑ Extra Batteries (flashlights, radio, other battery powered kit items) ❑ First Aid Kit (The American Red Cross suggests the following for a family of four (4)) ❍ 2 absorbent compress dressings (5 x 9 inches) ❍ 25 adhesive bandages (assorted sizes) ❍ 1 adhesive cloth tape (10 yards x 1 inch) ❍ 5 antibiotic ointment packets (approximately 1 gram) ❍ 5 antiseptic wipe packets ❍ 2 packets of aspirin (81 mg each) ❍ 1 blanket (space blanket) ❍ 1 breathing barrier (with one-way valve) ❍ 1 instant cold compress ❍ 2 pair of non-latex gloves (size: large) ❍ 2 hydrocortisone ointment packets (approximately 1 gram each) ❍ Scissors ❍ 1 roller bandage (3 inches wide) ❍ 1 roller bandage (4 inches wide) ❍ 5 sterile gauze pads (3 x 3 inches) ❍ 5 sterile gauze pads (4 x 4 inches) ❍ Oral thermometer (non-mercury/non-glass) ❍ 2 triangular bandages ❍ Tweezers ❍ First aid instruction booklet ❑ Medications (7 day supply) ❑ Medical Supplies (Glasses, Contact Lenses, syringes, specialty batteries, etc.) ❑ Multi-Purpose Tool (or small hand tools) ❑ Sanitation & Personal Hygiene Items ❑ Copies/Originals of Personal Documents ❍ Medication List ❍ Important Medical Information ❍ Passports ❍ Birth Certificates ❍ Immunization Record ❍ Sojourner’s Permit ❍ Housing Documents (Inventory, Housing Contract, etc.) ❍ Automobile Papers (Bill of Sale(s), Registration, etc.) ❍ Insurance Policies ❍ Powers of Attorneys ❑ Cell Phone(s) with Chargers ❑ Family & Emergency Contact Information ❑ Emergency Blanket(s) or Sleeping Bag(s) ❑ Map of the Area ❑ Manual Can Opener ❑ Pet Supplies ❍ Food ❍ Water ❍ Documents ❍ Crate (Transport) ❍ Tags & Collar ❍ Leash Be Informed. NPC Social Media Provides Sailors Direct Personnel Feedback Options From Navy Personnel Command Public Affairs

Experts at Navy Personnel Command (NPC) are ready to assist Sailors on any personnel-related topic, and the best way to get questions answered is via social media, leaders said Sept. 26. "Our social media viewership has expanded significantly over the last year, largely due to producing relevant content for Sailors based on their participation and comments on content, and our responses to their specific questions," said Lt. Nicholas Watts, NPC social media manager. "If it's a question we can't answer right away, we send it to the appropriate subject matter expert to get the best response. Our goal is to provide the best information, backed by governing documents, within 24-48 hours." NPC has presences on Facebook at www.facebook.com/navypersonnelcommand, and Twitter @USNPeople. These sites not only allow NPC to push information to Sailors, but allow Sailors to provide feedback about the best way to deliver information. "We've asked everyone in NPC how we can best get out information, and we've made a lot of changes," said Watts. "Now we need Sailors to tell us how to make things better. And, while we are not a means for conducting official detailing business, we are the best resource for accessing answers to your career questions, including putting you in contact with your detailer." Sailors are reminded that social media is a public forum and they should not include any sensitive or personally identifiable information. For more information, visit NPC's social media pages or at www.npc.navy.mil. For more news from Navy Personnel Command, visit www.navy.mil/local/npc/.

“I was extremely proud of our swimmers, 25 strong, up in Lakenheath this past weekend,” said Jane Higgins, Naples Tiger Sharks head coach. “The team looked really strong in the water in comparison with their competitors. The endless drills in practice are definitely paying off as new personal bests continued to be set.” Higgins said Ingrid Bidwell, Sydney Bidwell, Brandon Oestereicher, and Carly Sharp literally capped off the meet with their 400 individual medley swim at 9:45 p.m. “All four competitors are vying for a spot in the Long Distance Champs up in Lignano, Italy over Thanksgiving weekend,” said Higgins. It wasn’t all swim talk in the bleachers and by the pool. Families and swimmers also shared stories of their experiences visiting places like Stonehenge, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, the theater, and Cambridge, just to name a few. The life-changing experiences of being part of the Naples Tiger Sharks swim team extends well beyond the lanes of a swimming pool. “This was our first time traveling to Lakenheath and it was a great ex-

Obtaining your Sojourner Permit Italian law requires all foreign personnel working or living within Italy, other than an active-duty member under military orders, to obtain a Sojourner Permit within eight days of arrival in Italy. This is different from a visa, which is merely an approval for entry into the country. All applicants over 14 years of age must apply in person, as each person's signature is required at the time of application. NATIONALS OF ANY STATE OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY COMING TO ITALY DO NOT REQUIRE ANY VISA OR SOJOURNER PERMIT. As part of the Area Orientation process, the U.S. Region Legal Service Office (RLSO EURAFSWA) assists in the preparation and oversees the acquisition of the Sojourner Permit for all personnel attached to U.S. Navy commands in the Naples area. Army and Air Force personnel stationed at JFC must apply through the Carabiniere at the JFC Provost Marshall's Office, Building L. Contact Tiziana Petrarca, RLSO EURAFSWA liaison advisor, at 081-5684639 for more information.

Sailors paint a gate at the Pontificio Collegio Filippino and refuge center during a community relations event in Rome, Oct. 3. (Photo by Cmdr. Don Biadog Jr.) By Cmdr. Don Biadog Jr, NSA Naples command chaplain. Sailors from Naval Support Activity Naples, Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station (NCTS) Naples and Public Works lent a helping hand to nuns, priests and migrants at the Pontificio Collegio Filippino and refuge center in Rome, Oct. 3. The Seabees and the communicators during Operation Help Our Neighbors (OHON). OHON is a concerted effort by Sailors stationed in Naples to help the local community through various projects. A combination of the Seabees’ "Can Do!" motto and the NCTS mission statement of "Taking care of our People ALWAYS, will ensure Mission Success,” resulted in a successful community relations project, which impacted more than 60 priests, nuns, students and staff at the Pontificio Collegio Filippino and more than 100 migrants, pastors and staff of the refuge center in one of the lower income sections of Rome.

The college and refuge center staff members are from Asia and Africa, while the migrants are from Eastern European countries, Asia and the Middle East. Filipino Cardinal Luis A. Tagle of Manila was present during the Sailors’ project and took time away from his schedule to thank and offer a prayer of blessings to the Sailors. “Today’s COMREL was a lot of fun,” said Yeoman Seaman Apprentice Jasmine Harris, assigned to NCTS. “I really enjoyed being able to help and pretend to be a Seabee for the day.” Harris’ comments echoed the sentiments of the other volunteers who enjoyed the full days’ worth of work. Sailors painted, moved furniture and delivered more than 200 pounds of humanitarian items to the college and refuge center. According to Rector Father Greg Gaston, the Pontificio Collegio Filippino saved about 1, 200 euros for the work accomplished by the Sailors.
