The Justice Department announced on Feb. 9 that under its settlements with five of the nation’s largest mortgage servicers, 952 service members and their co-borrowers are eligible to receive more than $123 million for non-judicial foreclosures that violated the Service Members Civil Relief Act. The five mortgage servicers are JP Morgan Chase Bank N.A.; Wells Fargo Bank N.A. and Wells Fargo & Co.; Citi Residential Lending Inc., Citibank, NA and CitiMortgage Inc.; GMAC Mortgage, LLC, Ally Financial Inc. and Residential Capital LLC; and BAC Home Loans Servicing LP formerly known as Countrywide Home Loans Servicing LP (Bank of America). In the first round of payments under the SCRA portion of the 2012 settlement known as the National Mortgage Settlement, 666 service members and their co-borrowers will receive more than $88 million from JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Citi and GMAC Mortgage. The other 286 service members and their co-borrowers already have received over $35 million from Bank of America through an earlier settlement. The non-judicial foreclosures at issue took place between Jan. 1, 2006, and Apr. 4, 2012. Unlawful Foreclosures “These unlawful judicial foreclosures forced hundreds of service members and their families out of their homes,” said Acting Associate Attorney General Stuart F. Delery. “While this compensation will provide a measure of relief, the fact is that service members should never have to worry about losing their home to an illegal foreclosure while they are serving our country. The department will continue to actively protect our service members and their families from such unjust actions.”

BASE NOTES New Naples MWR Website Launched

By Capt. Doug Carpenter NSA Naples Commanding Officer

I held a Town Hall Tuesday at the Support Site base theater and I want to thank all those who attended for their great questions and ideas. I think these Town Halls are a great way to communicate and discuss important issues, concerns and upcoming events. Among the topics we talked about were trouble call issues with Housing, lighting on the base and in housing, how to get emergency information from dispatch, trash collection, and a great discussion on base security in general. As I stated there, I think the base is looking really good, and I encourage everyone to keep it up, pick it up and recycle. I also want to pass along a BRAVO ZULU to the kids who showed up at the Town Hall to ask some really good questions about movie show times, swimming pool pricing and lighting some of our playgrounds. It’s great to see that level of involvement in our community and I look forward to working on these issues to improve our quality of life. Another great contribution from the community was the completion of the Naples Area Visit IG survey. We got great numbers, almost double the requirement, so thank you for taking the time to assist with the upcoming visit and share your views with the Navy Inspector General. That survey and the active participation from our Ombudsmen team will help the IG pick topics to zero in on during their focus groups. The focus group meetings will be held Feb. 24- 26 and if they choose you to be a focus group participant, please give them your time and honest feedback. They’re going to be looking at our quality of life and area programs during the team’s visit March 9-13. The next month will be a very busy time for many of us here. Enjoy the extended weekend for President’s Day and I hope you’re putting the finishing touches on your Spring Break plans. We enjoy superb support from Armed Forces Entertainment and have some great shows lined up. A group of MMA fighters will be at the Support Site gym Feb. 20 to talk shop and host a clinic if you show up in your fitness attire. The musical artist T-Pain will be hitting the stage in Bella Napoli outside Capodichino’s Olde Town Pub March 1 for a show for those aged 17 or above. March 3 will bring a USO meet and greet with a diverse group of well-known talent. Our military community will be able to see Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, Chuck Pagano, Dennis Haysbert from “24” and “The Unit,” Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo from “American Idol,” Jason Acuna –aka Wee Man, and other luminaries. And these are just some of the upcoming events! There will really be something for everyone in the coming months. Enjoy the long weekend, be safe and look out for one another.

NAVY HISTORY: FIRST OFFICIAL SALUTE Story by Gary Nichols

The “John Paul Jones flag” was entered into Dutch records to help Jones and his crew avoid charges of piracy when he was fighting the British in their homeland.

John Paul Jones, America’s greatest Revolutionary naval commander and founder of America’s naval tradition, while serving as the commanding officer of the sloop-of-war Ranger, received the first official salute to the U.S. Stars and Strips flag by a European country, at Quiberon, France, on Feb. 14, 1778. Jones and French Admiral La Motte Piquet exchanged gun salutes – the first time that the Stars and Stripes, carrying the flag of the new nation, was officially recognized by a

foreign government. Jones and his crew of 140 men had left Portsmouth, N.H., three months earlier for the harbor town of Brest, France, and ultimately the Irish Sea. His mission was to raid British warships in their own waters. One of the greatest naval commanders in history, Jones is regarded as the “Father of the American Navy.” He is buried in a crypt at the U.S. Naval Academy Chapel in Annapolis, Md., where a Marine honor guard stands watch over one of America’s greatest naval heroes.

NAVFAC EURAFSWA Hosts Contract Hazard Awareness Training By MC2 Eva-Marie Ramsaran NAVFAC EURAFSWA Public Affairs

Twenty-two members from Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Europe Africa Southwest Asia (EURAFSWA), Public Works Department (PWD) Naples, civilian contractors, construction managers, engineering technicians and shop supervisors attended Contract Hazard Awareness Training at Naval Support Activity Naples, Italy, Jan. 26-30. The training was a 40-hour course that ensured PWD employees and the local NAVFAC contract partners who attended understand and know how to do their jobs using safe methods. This training provided the “how-to,” and focused specifically on learning how to better understand their obligations to run a safe work environment, and the government’s role in safety. “This training was being conducted to better equip our personnel with the knowledge of the Corps of Engineer Safety Requirements,” said NAVFAC EURAFSWA Safety Manager

David Halley. NAVFAC Far East safety manager, James Arriola, taught the hazard awareness training in Naples, Italy; Bahrain, Kingdom of Bahrain; and Rota, Spain; making it the first time it was conducted in the past four years for the EURAFSWA region. During the course, Arriola went over the new version of the Army Corps of Engineers EM-385-1-1 manual, Safety and Health Requirements Manual, which describes safety and health requirements for all Corps of Engineers activities and operations, including NAVFAC construction contracts. Following this manual is supposed to help all contractors working on Department of Defense projects meet all the necessary safety requirements to ensure success on all their current and future Federal projects. The course provided knowledge and skill to perform basic mishap investigations and to develop report, abstracts, and lessons learned to share with other construction sites. It also provided the importance of safety

management, APP, AHAs, and how to use the EM 3851-1 manual. “This course was a good reminder to take every job and its safety precautions seriously,” said Equipment Operator 2nd Class Elliot Bunek, PWD Naples license examiner and course student. “The most important thing I took away from this class is to make sure that everyone knows their job and what is required of them pertaining to safety; make sure to double check things because you can’t put a price on someone’s life.” PWD Bahrain Regional Contract Safety Manager Theresia Reistad said the benefit of this training program was to ensure participants understand hazard awareness and hazard mitigation on construction sites, and the regulations or standards to apply.

ENERGY CONSERVATION Five Low Cost, Simple DIY Energy Projects

Led by eight-year Head Coach Jane Higgins, the Naples Tiger Sharks won their ninth consecutive European Forces Swim League (EFSL) Southern Division Championship title last weekend in Lisbon. The Tigers Sharks is a member of the EFSL, which is comprised of swim teams from the U.S. and Allied Forces communities. For the past eight years, the Tiger Sharks have been the reigning EFSL Southern Division Champions and in 2014, the team captured the EFSL Individual Championship and the Long Distance Championship titles as well. While 2014 stands out as a great year for the Tiger Sharks, the team is keenly aware of the need to draw on its unique strengths and swim hard to continue to bring those titles back to Naples. “This year’s Southern Division Title will be one for the archives. Coach Jane and the Coaching Staff developed yet another great strategy with this victory,” said David Snodgrass, president of the Naples Tiger Sharks team. “I’ve never been more proud of a group than the group of swimmers who went to Lisbon. They knew what they wanted!” The Tiger Sharks attribute much of their success in the pool to the team’s well-bal-

1. Lower Water Heating Temperature This “easy” water heater project recommends you lower your water heater temperature to 120 degrees. Lowering the temperature of your water heater can save you $12-$30 annually for each 10 degrees reduction and decreases the risk of scalding. It only takes two hours to complete and doesn’t cost anything. 2. Insulate Hot Water Pipes Insulating your hot water pipes reduces heat loss and can raise water temperature by two to four degrees hotter than uninsulated pipes can deliver, allowing for a lower water temperature setting. For a small home, the project can take about three hours to complete and only cost $10-$15. anced and well-rounded composition. For the 2014-2015 season, the team rostered 36 female and 39 male swimmers. Of these 25 percent competed in 10 and under events, 28 percent in 11-12 year old events, 23 percent in 13-14 year old events, and 24 percent in 15-17 year old events. One-third of the swimmers are new to the team, so the pipeline appears filled for next year as well. According to Higgins, it’s this incredible mix of balance, breadth and depth that make the Tiger Sharks a winning team. Led by Captains Bret Baldwin, Sydney Bidwell, Erin Dromerhauser & Isaac Stacks, and trained by Coaches Jane Higgins, Danna Traucht,

Randy Baldwin, Rob McDonough, Gina Sword and Rachael Baldwin, the Tiger Sharks defended their title with high hopes, strong balance, significant breadth and great depth for keeping their winning streak alive. High Points Awards: 36 points – 1st Place in all individual events: Stephen Traucht, Carly Sharp, Brendan Smith, Lauren Snodgrass, Ingrid Bidwell, James McDonough, Brandon Oestereicher, Kathryn Kanak, Ashton Stacks 34 points – 1st place in two events and 2nd place in one event: Alex Ruppe, Erin Dromerhauser, Andrew Smith, Ryan Rayos, Houlton McGuinn, Tim Smith, Leslie Traucht

3. Insulate Hot Water Heater Tank Insulating your hot water tank is an easy and inexpensive way to improve energy efficiency and save you money each month. It is a medium difficulty level project and can save you $20-$45 annually. It only takes an hour and a half to complete and will cost about $30 overall. 4. Install Exterior Storm Windows with Low-Emissivity Coating Storm window installation is one of the most cost-effective solutions for upgrading energy inefficient existing windows. They’re easy to install and cost a fraction of replacement windows. In fact, low-emissivity (low-e) storm windows can lower your utility bill just as much as replacing an entire window. It is rated as an easy project and can save you 10 to 35 percent on your energy bills. It will take 20-30 minutes per window and cost $60-$200 per window. 5. Seal Air Leaks with Caulk One of the quickest energy- and money-saving tasks you can do is caulk, seal, and weather-strip all cracks and large openings to the outside. This “easy” project will cost $3-$30 and only takes one to two hours to complete. It will also save you five to 10 percent on your energy bills.

Forces Europe Band’s Musician and Tirzah Aiken. After the top five performed, the audience determined the winner. Each member of the audience was given an opportunity to vote by SMS for whom they think deserved to win. The three participants with the most votes won the prizes that included a weekend tour courtesy of suegiuperilmonbo, a weekend rental with Europcar and two-night hotel in Italy courtesy of 2B4, and two round-trip tickets to the United States provided by United Airlines. Admission to the event was free to the community. By the time the show started, all the seats were filled and more people stood along the back wall to watch the performances. “I’m a huge fan of the TV shows and I think all of the talents could’ve easily performed on one of those shows,” said Capt. Doug Carpenter, NSA Naples commanding officer. “I was really impressed with what our base had to offer and I really enjoyed the performances. I am glad to see the huge amount of support from the Naples community given to these performers by attending the event and enjoying the show.” This event would not have been able to happen without the support of sponsors, the USO and the Naples community. USO Naples Show Producer Shannon McCaulley said this year’s event took three months to prepare, which included auditions and more than 300

volunteer hours from USO volunteers. For more information on the Naples Got Talent or other events hosted by the USO contact the USO.

I just wanted to perform so it was pretty cool to win,” said Delamater. “I was really nervous to perform my own song; the songs I write are for me so it was difficult to put my feelings out there.” The 10 contestants all performed one performance each during the first round. A panel judged the performances on showmanship, stage presence, talent and overall performance, and chose their top five to compete in the final round. His pinpoint accuracy and courageous exploits earn him the nickname “Legend.” However, his reputation is also growing behind enemy lines, putting a price on his head and making him a prime target of insurgents. He is also facing a different kind of battle on the home front: striving to be a good husband and father. Despite the danger, as well as the toll on his family, Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq, personifying the spirit of the SEAL creed to “leave no one behind”. But upon returning to his family, Chris finds that it is the war he can’t leave behind.

THE GAMBLER R, Drama, 112 min. Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Brie Larson, Jessica Lange, John Goodman, Sonya Walger. Jim Bennett is a risk taker. Both an English professor and a high-stakes gambler, Bennett bets it all when he borrows from a gangster and offers his own life as collateral. Always one step ahead, Bennett pits his creditor against the operator of a gambling ring and leaves his dysfunctional relationship with his wealthy mother in his wake. He plays both sides, immersing himself in an illicit, underground world while garnering the attention of Frank, a loan shark with a paternal interest in Bennett’s future. As his relationship with a student deepens, Bennett must take the ultimate risk for a second chance.

Turing, whose contributions and genius significantly shortened the war, saving thousands of lives, was the eventual victim of an unenlightened British establishment, but his work and legacy live on.

Arriving alone at Paddington Station, Paddington soon finds that city life is not all he had imagined - until he meets the kindly Brown family, who find him with a label tied around his neck which reads ‘Please look after this bear. Thank you.’ They offer him a temporary home whilst he searches for the explorer who impressed Aunt Lucy all those years before. But when Paddington catches the eye of a sinister, seductive taxidermist, it isn’t long before his home – and very existence – is under threat.

Cupid and Valentine’s Day By Gary Nichols

Each year on February 14, many people exchange cards, candy, gifts or flowers with their special “valentine.” The day of romance we call Valentine’s Day is named for a Christian martyr and dates back to the fifth century, but has origins in the Roman holiday Lupercalia. The day became associated with romantic love in the Middle Ages in England. For many, the figure of Valentine’s Day is often Cupid, the god of love. Cupid is often portrayed as the son of the love goddess Venus, and is known in Latin also as Amor (“Love”). His Greek counterpart is Eros. Cupid is usually portrayed as a small

winged child-like figure or cherub, armed with a bow and arrow. In mythology, he uses his arrow to strike the hearts of people, and make them fall in love. People who have fallen in love are sometimes said to be “struck by Cupid’s arrow.” Other symbols of Valentine’s Day are hearts and flowers. Gifts that are often exchanged are flowers, chocolate, red roses and people often celebrate the day by going out to dinner.
