Service members from the Naples area participated in the 20th annual Armed Forces Olympics, organized by the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) at Carney Park, June 13. Ten separate competitions were held throughout the day bringing service members together to compete in sports and other activities ranging from card games and cart

races, to archery and tug-of-war. “This is a good day to come out and get with your command and enjoy a day off work in this beautiful weather,” said Staci Dietrich, MWR Naples Liberty Entertainment manager and one of the organizers of the event. “The Armed Forces Olympics builds camaraderie between military personnel. We’re one team; we’re here to fight together and have each other’s backs.” Armed Forces Olympics was open to all

branches of the military, so friendly rivalry was in the air. “It brings us together, we get to work in teams and compete against other branches like the Army; I hardly ever see them,” said Information Systems Technician 2nd Class Andrew McGlothlin, assigned to Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station (NCTS) Naples. “It’s always fun to talk a little trash and be able to back it up.”

5 Things You Should Know About Your Gas Coupons From Naval Support Activity Naples Public Affairs

Our military community in Naples and its personnel fluctuate frequently, and newcomers may not always pick up or retain all the relevant information needed regarding gas coupons. Bart Di Muccio is the Tax Free Rationed Products programs administrator for U.S. and NATO Forces in Italy and provided the top five things NATO Forces should be aware of concerning the use of gas coupons. To report issues or for additional information on Tax Free Programs, please contact the Tax Free office at DSN 626-5439, 081568-5439 or by email to fct.na.nsa_navsup_tax_free@eu.n avy.mil. 1. Use the correct gas stations and fill out your coupons NATO Forces tax-free gas coupons must only be used at ENI or AGIP gas stations. The gas coupons are required to be filled

out by the customer for them to be valid. Random audits are conducted by Italian authorities, U.S. Naval Support Activity Naples and ENI to ensure gas coupons are correctly filled in. Failure to complete a gas coupon with all the details is considered misuse of the tax-free gas coupons and eligible members will be requested to provide a justification as to why the gas coupon was not completely filled in. It is important that the gas coupons are filled out at the gas station once the vehicle has been fuelled as the coupons must reflect the date it was utilized. 2. Be savvy consumers when filling up at the pump Always ask the authorized gas station if they accept gas coupons. They are required to accept gas coupons, but there are occasions where ENI/AGIP gas station attendants have refused to accept the tax-free coupons. Should this occur, please notify the Tax Free

office and they will take immediate action to resolve the issue. If fuel has already been pumped, customers need to provide a valid receipt, the name and address of the gas station, the gas coupons that were not accepted and bank details to the Tax Free office, which will contact ENI in Rome and ensure the member is reimbursed via an electronic funds transfer. The meter should automatically reset when the nozzle is extracted from the gas pump. If you feel this hasn’t happened, you can ask the attendant to put the nozzle back and extract it again. Customers should hear the pump automatically turn on once the nozzle has been extracted as its ready to

pump the fuel. Also, if a gas station attendant asks you to sell your gas coupons or trade them for something else, please report it as soon as possible. If a vehicle breaks down due to water in the gas tank, NATO Forces must notify the Tax Free office immediately. Water-contaminated fuel is not an easy thing to prove. The longer it takes to report the incident, the harder it is to receive some form of compensation. The Tax Free office will work with the service member or family member, but does not provide any legal assistance or guidance should the need arise, and cannot guarantee that the member will receive compensation. As we move closer to July, I’d like to highlight an upcoming competition hosted by Region EURAFSWA called Energy Biggest Loser. Installations region-wide will compete for $50,000 to be donated in support of projects that will increase the base beautification. The winner will be the installation with the greatest decrease in energy consumption for the month of July--and I fully intend for that to be Naval Support Activity Naples! The competition begins July 1 and concludes July 31, with electrical readings to be taken at the beginning of the month and at the end of the month using the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system, which was upgraded earlier this year. We intend on making weekly reading reports available via this publication, along with periodic announcements on AFN, the CO and PAO weekly radio shows, and our Facebook page, so we can all track our progress. Help us ensure the word gets out, so that we can receive this award for our installation and community! We also want to continue to spread the word about our summer concerts, made possible through Armed Forces Entertainment. As the official Department of Defense agency for providing entertainment to U.S. military personnel overseas, Armed Forces Entertainment and its performers greatly support our Sailors, Marines, Soldiers, and Airmen by delivering top quality shows and concerts to our bases. This entertainment continues to be one of the biggest morale boosters for U.S. military personnel serving overseas. During World War II, the Camp Shows program recruited and transported thousands of performers to entertain the troops. The well-known celebrities who were part of these shows were a welcome sight to millions of service men and women. Today, Armed Forces Entertainment hosts more than 1,200 shows around the world each year, reaching more than 500,000 personnel at 270 military installations. From muddy make-shift stages to jaw-dropping extravaganzas, the performances bring a piece of home to those stationed far away from home, including our community right here in Naples, Italy. Musicians, comedians, cheerleaders, sports celebrities, and movie and television stars are just some of the talented people recruited to perform for our troops. It's their way of saying "thank you" for the sacrifices U.S. military personnel make during a tour of duty on foreign soil. Next Friday, June 27, Armed Forces Entertainment is proud to present Ayla Brown, a country/Americana singer, who will perform at 6 p.m. at the Support Site Central Park. Hopefully, the weather cooperates and I urge everyone to come out, enjoy a free show and support the great tradition of AFE performances. One more way to get involved is by taking the current NEX Food Service System-wide survey, which will continue through July 5. The survey covers only our NEXCOM food outlets-both direct run and concession operated sitesand is located at https://www.nexresearch.com/nex_food. Completing the survey enters you to win a $250 gift card to the NEX--log on today and take advantage of the opportunity to have your voice heard! Finally, we also want to notify the community about a local civil court case involving the Mirabella SpA company. The civil court declared the Mirabella SpA company bankrupt. Mirabella SpA is the construction business and one of many companies under the Mirabella and Coppola umbrella. Mirabella SGSpA is the company that runs the Support Site. The Navy has been given personal assurances from both Mr. Coppola and his legal counsel that the workers aboard Support Site who are currently employed by Mirabella SPA will be brought over to Mirabella SGSpA, the Navy's lessor at Support Site, that services will not be impacted and that the Support Site Mirabella company is fully prepared to execute any/all lease modifications that are already in progress. We will continue to inform the community as conditions warrant or if services start to become affected. Thank you all for what you do, your service to the county and our wonderful community and have a great weekend!

The Computer Desktop Notification System (CDNS) / Wide Area Alert Notification (WAAN) are emergency message systems used in our area. CDNS and WAAN registration is required for all military, civilian and contractor personnel with a OneNet user account. Personnel should register their office email address and phone number in the system, but can also include cellphones as well as contact information for family members. OneNet users can sign up by right-clicking the purple globe at the bottom right of the desktop task bar and selecting “Access Self Service” option. Personnel outside the OneNet system can send an email to the NSA Naples Emergency Dispatch Office at M-NANSAOPSEMDispatch-GS@eu.navy.mil. Family members must register through their sponsors.

Closed AGIP/ENI Gas Stations in the Campania Region Several ENI/AGIP gas stations in the Campania region have recently closed due to an investigation by the Guardia di Finanza. It is up to the Italian magistrate who is investigating this matter to determine when and if these gas stations will be allowed to reopen. Please be aware that stations in the area may close or open without warning, and plan ahead with gas purchases. For additional information, contact Mr. Bart Di Muccio, Tax Free Programs Administrator, at DSN 626-5439.

Lead Drinking Water Testing NSA Naples is planning on conducting new testing for lead in drinking water at our schools, Child Development Centers, and youth and teen centers. In the U.S., EPA recommends, and the Navy requires, testing for lead in drinking water in schools and day care centers. NSA Naples will be taking a number of steps that include: testing drinking water for lead; disseminating test results to parents, students, staff and other interested stakeholders; and taking appropriate and necessary actions to correct any problems identified during testing. Once completed, the test results from these locations will be available in their offices during working hours, on the command webpage at www.cnic.navy.mil/Naples, and on the command Facebook page. Additional information about water quality resources can be found at: http://water.epa. gov/drink/info/lead/schools_index.cfm.

NSA Naples Collecting Indoor Radon Level Detectors NSA Naples is currently collecting indoor radon gas detectors as part of an ongoing Navywide program, with Naples as the first Navy installation in Europe to conduct a comprehensive study on its current facilities. Radon detectors, called alpha-track detectors, are being collected in Navy facilities at Capodichino, Support Site, Gaeta, Carney Park, and Navy-managed buildings at JFC (Lago Patria). The detectors have been placed in all basements and ground level indoor spaces inhabited at least four hours daily over the last year. Navy facili-

Fierce Storms Strike Naples Naples and its hinterland were struck by fierce thunderstorm this week. Several streets in Naples were flooded Monday, and emergency service telephones were jammed with requests for help from firefighters. The central station underground system was closed due to flooding of tracks, which required draining. The archeological city of Herculaneum was closed due to fallen trees on the path from the ticket office to the entrance. Storms knocked down trees also in Rome where streets were flooded in its neighborhoods. The consequences of severe thunderstorms and hail cost farmers millions of euros in damages, according to the Italian Confederation of Farmers. Hail storms and torrential rain caused crop and structural damages from Tuscany to Puglia, including Campania region. Summer fruit and vegetable qualities will be affected. The south and central regions in Italy had storm alerts for several days.

Gypsy Camp Remnants Cleaned up by City The gypsies camp of Poggioreale, Naples was set on fire in March under unclear circumstances. The camp hosted 300 people, including 180 minors. The entire cleaning of the area is expected to last about four weeks.

USO Presents Summer Fest 2014 By MC3 Robert S. Price, Navy Public Affairs Support Element – East Detachment Europe

The USO Naples Committee presented a MultiCultural Summer Fest at the Support Site Central Park for more than 400 people, June 14. The free event was held in the evening with international foods, live music, craft vendors, cultural display booths, a Father’s Day photo booth, multi-cultural trivia and children’s games. “The rain at the beginning could have scared some people, but many stuck around,” said Shannon McCaulley, USO Summer Fest information specialist. The families that weathered the rain were able to celebrate the summer evening underneath a picturesque rainbow. Command-sponsored organizations set-up food stands to serve favorite dishes from different cultures. Attendees were offered an array of tasty options such as tacos, curry chicken, Hawaiian and Asian foods and desserts. Festivalgoers were encouraged to embrace their cultures, heritage and nationalities with the base community. Jason Salcedo, visiting from Washington state, was enthused to volunteer his time and share his Mexican heritage. Salcedo said he was happy to don a sombrero with the MWR crew, share his family’s chorizo recipes and serve tacos. He said the stand sold out of food after serving approximately 200 customers. The children had many ways to keep busy by jumping between tents offering bubble-wands within kiddy pools, a skill-based sack throwing booth, and an inflatable bounce house. For children with a competitive edge, the USO held a hula-hoop twirl, a sackrace and a watermelon eating contest for prizes. Lucky and skilled youngsters left the festival with candy, DVDs and even an inflatable alligator raft. “One young kid ran up to the volunteers running the Bounce House,” said McCaulley. “After doing the bubble wands and the watermelon eating contest the child yelled, ‘This is the Best day of my Life!’” The Central Park pavilion was booked for the entire

Folk artists and classic cover bands performed music, guest speaker Information Systems Technician 2nd Class Denver Sizemore gave a motived message of hope for tomorrow as part of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month, and the band Topside of U.S. Naval Forces Europe Band closed down the night with toe-tapping tunes. navy Joins annual 'Feds Feed Families' Campaign By Shawn Miller, Naval District Washington Public Affairs The Department of the Navy joined the governmentwide "Feds Feed Families" campaign June 10 to donate food and help combat hunger in local communities across the country. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) leads the campaign, running from June 1 through the end of August, with support from the Department of Defense (DOD), Chief Human Capital Officers Council (CHCOC) and other federal agencies. Efforts are led by Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) with the Chaplain's office tracking and managing donations, said Cmdr. Philip King, CNIC supervisory chaplain. While food banks typically see large amounts of food on their shelves over the winter months, donations typically trail off after the holidays are over. "By the time summer comes, the shelves are bare and that need still exists," said Lt. Thea Lopez, Feds Feed Families operations officer for the Navy. "Hunger goes year-round." Last year, the overall federal campaign brought in nine million pounds of food in the three-month summer program, with Navy contributing 1.2 million pounds of the 1.8 million pounds from the DOD. King said the Navy is hoping to exceed last year's donations during the 2014 season. "It calls attention to hunger in a local community and meeting a need," King said. "A lot of kids depend on a school lunch program for the only meal they get during

the day, and when school ends, many of them will go hungry." While much of the attention focuses on children at home during the summer, the program benefits anyone in need, King explained, including senior citizens on fixed incomes who may be having trouble. Donation boxes are appearing on Navy installations worldwide. At Naval Support Activity Naples, drop-off locations have been set up at the Capodichino Chapel and at the Support Site Commissary during normal working hours. Community members can call the chapel at 081-568-3539 for more information. Personnel wishing to donate should place non-perishable food items in designated boxes at their federal workplace. To give directly to food banks in support of the Feds Feed Families campaign, donations must be weighed at the receiving food banks and personnel should bring a receipt to their command for management purposes, Lopez continued. For Sailors and Navy personnel who want to help but do not have a local food bank tied to the campaign, monetary donations may be made through the Religious Offerings Fund at the local installation's chapel with each dollar equivalent to five pounds of food. Another goal, Lopez added, is to help inspire people to get involved outside of work. "There's so many avenues that people can use in their own communities," she said. For more information and other ways to get involved, visit www.fedsfeedfamilies.gov.

GAS COUPONS Customers should never get into arguments with gas station attendants. If the attendant fails to understand a customer's concerns, or the customer feels they have not received the customer service expected, send the Tax Free office an email describing the incident. Emails are forwarded to the ENI area manager requesting clarification, which normally results in the manager meeting with the gas station owner and resolving the issue. Many owners are not aware of the problem. Customers should also take into consideration that at times there are misunderstandings due to the language barrier and customer service standards cannot always be compared to those in the U.S. Di Muccio meets with the ENI area manager about once a month to discuss issues and concerns. 3. Request an amount in liters that can fit in your vehicle If at all possible, never ask to fill up your tank. Instead, request a specific quantity in liters. With the new automated system ENI recently implemented, the quantity issued at the pump must reflect the quantity in gas coupons. Therefore, if a customer fills up their tank and the final liter quantity is 28 liters, the customer will have to pay 25 liters in coupons and three liters at the full pump price. Please remember that you must only give the gas stations tax-free gas coupons for the exact amount of fuel issued. Gas stations cannot give you change for the difference between the coupon quantity and the actual liters received and you cannot tip a gas station attendant with tax-free gas coupons. This is considered fiscal fraud, tax evasion and smuggling by Italian authorities and action can be taken against the customer and the gas station. Beginning Oct. 1, one and two liter coupons will be included in the 100 and 200 liter gas coupon books to help in these situations. 4. Potential consequences for misuse of NATO Forces gas coupons. We have no authority to take action against gas stations that display NATO gas coupon signs, but customers can get into trouble for

Continued from Page 1

not following the rules and regulations disseminated by U.S. Naval Support Activity Naples. Customers who give coupons to commercial entities not authorized to receive them or use coupons for things other than fuel are once again seen as committing fiscal fraud, tax evasion and smuggling by Italian authorities. Action can be taken against the customer and the gas station. Illegal use of tax-free coupons is a violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) and Italian law and may result in both the loss of an offender's privilege to purchase tax-free items and legal penalties. Tax-free privileges can be revoked as a whole, which includes the purchase of alcohol and tobacco products at the Navy Exchange, as well as overall Navy Exchange privileges. Italian Fiscal authorities may also prosecute and request payment of all associated taxes and pertinent fines. Another important factor to keep in mind is that whenever an eligible member of the military community abuses or misuses their tax-free privileges, they put at risk the taxfree privileges of the entire program in Italy. Tax-free privileges are a benefit bestowed upon the eligible member by the Italian government and can be taken away or reduced at any time. The best way to ensure this does not happen is to strictly adhere to the rules and regulations. The Tax Free office has copies of all NATO Forces gas coupons redeemed in Italy and conducts audits on a monthly basis to validate and verify correct usage of gas coupons. 5. Use your resources and don’t take rumors as facts Rumors put out by our community and at times by the gas stations themselves help spread misinformation on these issues. A lot of gas stations are franchised out and sometimes don’t follow ENI policy to the letter. The Tax Free office recommends awareness of what is put out by U.S. Naval Support Activity Naples or the Tax Free Rationed Products office. If customers have concerns, they can call DSN 6265439 or 081-568-5439 and get accurate information.

JFC Naples Field Gun Crew 2014 Plate Winners By Chief Petty Officer Mark Gower, JFC Naples Deputy Field Gun Officer

The Allied Joint Force Command (JFC) Naples Field Gun team became the first international winners of the annual competition held at HMS Collingwood in Fareham, United Kingdom, May 31. JFC Naples won the Plate 2 final and took home the Number One Trainer Award at the Field Gun competition. The team also ran their fastest time of 130.22 during the finals, which was a massive six seconds better than their previous best. The crew departed for the United Kingdom about a week

prior for a period of intensive track training as a prelude to the finals. JFC Naples sent a team of 28 personnel to represent their headquarters, including running crew and support personnel. For many of the crew this was their first taste of the competition and the challenges they faced were many and varied. Through sheer hard work, complete commitment and gritty determination, JFC Naples built a unique international Field Gun team to represent NATO. The team had members from eight nations and 12 different armed servic-

es at the Royal Navy Royal Marines Field Gun Competition, a truly international team to represent the international flavor of NATO. An effective training program was initiated by trainer Chief Petty Officer Steve Waudby, which enabled the crew to peak at just the right moment and win the Plate Final. In my five previous Field Gun competitions, I’ve never experienced a crew like this before. The hunger and desire was evident from the beginning; this was a massive achievement for the JFC Naples team.

nations Join Forces to Conduct VBSS during BaLtoPS 2014 By MC3 DJ Revell, Navy Public Affairs Support Element - East

Danish, Georgian and U.S. visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) teams conducted Maritime Interception Operations (MIO) training in the Baltic Sea during exercise Baltic Operations (BALTOPS) 2014, June 13. The teams boarded FGS Spessart (A1442), a Rhn-class tanker of the German Navy. During the boarding, VBSS teams executed tactical team movements, climbing and rappelling techniques, self-defense tactics, and weapons handling. After completion of the exercise, the teams analyzed and accessed tactics, techniques and skills. The crux of training focused on partnership. "With this training we hope to become better and build a sturdy working relationship with each other," said Royal Danish Navy Military Police Chief of Operations, Lt. Claus Rasmussen. "You will never know if we will have to conduct

an operation like this in the future." BALTOPS provides a unique opportunity for dispersed nations to collaborate together, in close proximity, on strategy and processes to enhance safety and effectiveness. VBSS operations are designed to support MIO through non-compliant and compliant boardings in order to combat piracy and smuggling, conduct counterterrorism missions, and perform customs and safety inspections. "Each country has their own communication and standards," said Danish VBSS squad leader Petty Officer Mike Joergensen, embarked onboard Danish ship, HNLMS Friesland (P842). "This is why we perform these exercises; to improve and learn from one another." BALTOPS is an annual, multinational exercise to enhance maritime capabilities and interoperability with partner nations to promote maritime safety and security in the Baltic Sea. This year's iteration of the exercise hosts 30 ships, 50 aircraft and

approximately 3,000 people from 14 nations, including NATO. Participants exercise, create and sustain partnerships, knowledge and skill sets across a broad range of mission areas to strengthen capabilities of both individual services and the international force.

3 Things You Can Do To Be There For Every Sailor, Every Day From Chief of Naval Personnel Public Affairs

Many Sailors are preparing for upcoming Personal Change of Station (PCS) moves this summer, a transition that can bring about as much stress as it does excitement. Transitions can mean disruption to daily routines and separation from one's social and support networks (think exhausting and isolating cross-country drives for a PCS move, or transferring as a geobachelor). Even for experienced PCS pros who are eagerly awaiting the next chapter in their careers and lives, moves can be tough-particularly when they're occurring during otherwise stressful times. The likelihood of making a bad or irrational decision is higher during transition periods, so identifying resources early is vital to keeping a shipmate healthy and mission-ready. Building resilience and preventing suicide requires each of us to be actively engaged and communicate with each other. Here are three things you can do to help your shipmates thrive through life's unpredictable moments, not just survive: 1. Get involved. You may know bits and pieces about your shipmate's life outside of the work center but may feel as though you don't know enough to make a difference. Even though your buddy may casually dismiss his or her problems, or may not discuss them at length, take a moment to ask how he or she is doing and actively listen. If he or she indicates that there are other issues going on (relationship or family tension, financial worries, apprehension about career changes, feelings of hopelessness, etc.), don't be afraid to reach out and offer your support. Encourage him or her to speak with someone, perhaps a chaplain or trusted leader, before the situation becomes overwhelming. Getting assistance early is vital to ensuring that stressors don't turn into crises, especially when a Sailor is starting a new chapter in life.

2. Don't hesitate to reach out to others to "connect the dots." While a shipmate may seem to have it all under control on the outside, it's important to remain vigilant and pay attention to even the smallest signals that something isn't right, particularly as a buddy is leaving a familiar environment and is heading to a new one. You may not be able to tell if a shipmate is or isn't in crisis. If you notice anything out of the norm for a shipmatewhether it's something he or she said jokingly or seriously, changes in attitude or daily behaviors and routines-break the silence and speak with others who know him or her well (a unit leader, roommate, family member or friend). They may have noticed the same cues or observed some that you weren't aware of. Be the first to step up and

start the conversation. By openly communicating to piece things together, you're helping to "connect the dots" and facilitate the intervention process if a potentially serious situation is evolving. 3. Remind a shipmate that he or she is still a part of the team. Social connectedness, unit cohesion and purpose strengthen resilience and serve as protective factors against suicide during stressful times. Though a shipmate may be detaching from your commandwhether to PCS, leave the Navy, or any other reasonlet him or her know that you're still there for support and that you care about his/her well-being. Be sure that you have your shipmate's contact information, ask about his or her upcoming plans (travel dates, pit stops/check-

points, etc.) and then check with them on their progress often. Since your shipmate will be out of your line of sight, it's important to ensure that key players remain engaged with him or her so that your buddy doesn't lose the protection that a sense of community can provide. When Sailors feel as though they're out of the "inner circle" (their network of friends, peers, or colleagues) it can have a detrimental effect on their sense of purpose and belonging. No matter where your shipmate is, they should never feel alone.

Communication shouldn't start when you're concerned about a shipmate or when someone is getting ready to leave for a new duty station. In order to have meaningful communication there must be trust, which is built over time. Remember to take a moment and ask your shipmates how things are going-and actively listen. Through simple acts of kindness, you can be there for "every Sailor, every day." It's okay to speak up when you're down. Help is always available. Call the Military Crisis Line at 1-800-273TALK (choose option 1) or visit www.veteranscrisisline.net.

In the event of an emergency or to report a crime, please call the Emergency Dispatch Center at 081-568-4911 or 5911. (On-Base Dial 9-1-1)

Ask the Doc: What is a pinworm infection and how is it treated?

“you drink too Much” What to say – and what not to say – to address your friend or family members’ alcohol use

By Cmdr. Michael Cassady, U.S. Naval Hospital Naples From Military Pathways

Pinworm infections are extremely common. Occurring worldwide, it is estimated that there are more than 40 million cases in the United States alone each year. Although any individual may develop a case of pinworms, the infections occurs most frequently in school children between 5 to 10 years of age. It is common for them to spread among family members and it is important to know that animals do not harbor pinworms. The most common symptom of pinworms is an itchy rectal area. Symptoms are worse at night when the female worms are most active and crawl out of the body to deposit their eggs. Although pinworm infections can be annoying, they rarely cause serious health problems and are usually not dangerous. Routine prescription medications provide an effective cure in almost all cases. If you suspect that you or your child might have pinworms, you should make an appointment to see your doctor. To help the doctor make the diagnosis, look for these signs: - Pinworms are big enough to be seen with the naked eye. They are yellow-white and look like a fine piece of thread. They are usually less than one-half inch long. - Pinworms are most active at night. The best time to see them on the anus is a few hours after bedtime. - Pinworms can also sometimes be seen on the outside of a child's stool. Preventing the spread of pinworms and protecting your family is as easy as washing your hands. Careful hand-washing by all family members before eating and after using the restroom is the best way to prevent the spread of pinworms. It also helps to keep fingernails clipped short to keep eggs from being trapped under the nails and more easily spread. Pinworms are easily treated with a medicine prescribed by your healthcare provider. If one person in a household has pinworms and other people in the household have the same symptoms, it is not necessary to test everyone before treatment. For additional information, contact the Preventive Medicine department at DSN 629-6457, or contact your primary care provider in the Medical Home Port by calling DSN 629-6271.

The following post is based on an article by Lisa Frederiksen, titled, “What to Say to Someone With a Drinking Problem,” that first appeared on her blog, www.BreakingtheCycles.com, on Feb. 16, 2014. For those of us who have a close friend or family member with an undiagnosed drinking problem, you know the challenges of talking to someone about his or her drinking. People who rely on alcohol often become adept at deflecting comments about their drinking and have an excuse for everything. Perhaps you have tried before and heard excuses such as: • You drink, too. Why is it any different for me? What’s the big deal? • A couple of drinks a night aren’t a problem. • I only drink on the weekends. Because of these common responses, it’s important to be able to express to the person exactly why you think his or her alcohol use is problematic. Try to be specific and clear with statements such as: • I don’t know if you are aware of what happens when you drink, but yesterday you ____. • I’ve been doing some internet searching trying to figure out if I should say anything about how you behave when you drink too much and found some great resources. I’d really like you to do the anonymous alcohol use self-assessment at DrinkingIQ.org. It specializes in addressing alcohol use among service members, veterans, and their families. • I think you have alcoholism – I say this so boldly because I’d never understood what alcoholism was before, but now I’ve been doing some research, and it appears you may have it. I’d really like you to take this anonymous assessment at www.DrinkingIQ.org • I’ve finally found a name for what happens to me when you behave the way you do while drinking – it’s called secondhand drinking. I’m going to be learning more about this, but I wanted you to know that the way you act when you drink is causing real problems for me. I’m not sure what to

do about it, but I also understand that my old ways of talking about this don’t work, either. It is also important to know what NOT to say, such as: • You’re a drunk! • Do you know how stupid you sounded last night? • Once again, you broke your promise. • If you loved me you’d stop. While these are all things that are tempting to say and it is certainly understandable why someone would say them, they are shaming, and will more likely put the person on the defensive than doing anything constructive. You don’t want to upset the person or put them on the defensive before the conversation even starts. Tell him or her that you plan to do more research and will follow up – and set a time to talk. Also explain that you are doing this out of love.

Navy Fitness Announces Three New Workout Series and Apps By Commander, Navy Installations Command Public Affairs

Commander, Navy Installations Command's Navy Operational Fitness and Fueling System (NOFFS) program is expected to launch three new workout series apps for your smart phone or tablet, June 20. These high-intensity programs - the Strength, Endurance, and Sandbag series provide Sailors with a "best-inclass" physical fitness and nutrition program. NOFFS was developed by the Navy in partnership with EXOS (formerly Athlete's Performance Institute). The Operational Series provides the foundational exercises that are designed to replicate the activities Sailors conduct in their operational duties: lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying. Each additional series (Strength, Endurance, and Sandbag) was developed to provide training modes that address the special interests of users. "The Strength Series will assist

Sailors with developing the strength that is needed to perform at their highest level," said Nick Aures, Performance Enhancement Dietitian, Commander, Navy Installations Command. "There are three training phases within the series that are intended to progressively build total work capacity and improve cardiovascular fitness." The first phase, Build Muscle, is focused on building lean muscle mass and improving the body's capacity to handle greater physical demands through a higher volume of work. The second phase, Get Strong, focuses on building strength through fewer repetitions and higher intensity. The final phase, Get Powerful, harnesses the user's newfound strength and trains their muscles to be fast and forceful. "The workouts in The Endurance Series are designed to assist with breaking through training plateaus, while decreasing injuries often associated with traditional endurance training," added Aures. "The workouts can be accomplished in a number of ways, including running, biking, rowing, or using any cardiovascular machine." Beyond the cardiovascular training in this series, additional training components that are vital to sustained success with endurance activities have been incorporated. These include pillar prep, strength maintenance, soft tissue release and plyometrics. Although these components can be completed in separate workouts, together they will provide the tools necessary to maximize results. The six phases of cardiovascular training progressively develop both the aerobic and anaerobic energy systems, effectively enhancing your ability to cover a greater distance at a faster pace. The ability to customize these workouts based on heart rate and/or rate of perceived exertion (RPE) will make the workouts challenging and effective throughout the phases. "The Sandbag Series provides Sailors with a training plan that can be performed in environments with limited equipment options, said Aures. “It will help them develop the strength and power they need to meet the performance demands placed upon

them in any environment. The added challenge of performing traditional exercises with a less stable mass (a sand-filled bag) provides a unique training experience that mimics the demands experienced in day-to-day life." The Sandbag Series also progresses through three phases of training by building upon the work completed in the previous phase and preparing for what's to come. The first phase, Build Your Base, establishes a strong base fitness level. The second phase, Gain Muscle, develops lean muscle mass and increases workout capacity through the use of a higher number of sets and repetitions. In the third phase, Get Powerful, movements will become more explosive, therefore developing the power necessary for immediate bursts of energy often required in operational environments. "Two additional elements that are available in each series include the fueling aspect and the regeneration component," explained Aures. The fueling aspect of NOFFS will allow Sailors to determine their total caloric needs to achieve personal goals, while the meal builder enables them to select high-octane foods for each meal, populate their meal plan a week at a time, and email it to themselves. The regeneration component will assist Sailors with addressing common aches and pains. The soft tissue release techniques combined with the flexibility routine will help restore muscular balance, and ensure that Sailors develop and maintain the mobility necessary for high-level performance. Interactive apps for each series are available at no cost for iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, or iPod), with Android devices being released shortly. The apps provide detailed guidance and examples of each exercise, along with scrolling pictures and videos that can be viewed with a quick swipe. Search for "NOFFS" in the App Store or on the Google Play Store app. For more information about NOFFS, fitness, nutrition, movement of the day, and other great resources, visit the Navy Fitness website at: www.navyfitness.org.

VIAGGIO SU STRADA / ROAD TRIP

Obtaining your Sojourner Permit Italian law requires all foreign personnel working or living within Italy, other than an active-duty member under military orders, to obtain a Sojourner Permit within eight days of arrival in Italy. This is different from a visa, which is merely an approval for entry into the country. All applicants over 14 years of age must apply in person, as each person's signature is required at the time of application. NATIONALS OF ANY STATE OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY COMING TO ITALY DO NOT REQUIRE ANY VISA OR SOJOURNER PERMIT. As part of the Area Orientation process, the U.S. Region Legal Service Office (RLSO EURAFSWA) assists in the preparation and oversees the acquisition of the Sojourner Permit for all personnel attached to U.S. Navy commands in the Naples area. Army and Air Force personnel stationed at JFC must apply through the Carabiniere at the JFC Provost Marshall's Office, Building L. Contact Tiziana Petrarca, RLSO EURAFSWA liaison advisor, at 081-568-4639 for more information.

The Armed Forces Olympics is an annual event designed to bring service members together for a day of fun and friendly competition. (Photos by MC3 Weston Jones) Not all of the competitions centered on sports. The Soap Box Derby tested teams’ ability to work together quickly. Each team was given the same amount of wood, wheels and tools, and had 30 minutes to construct a cart to be used in a downhill race. All materials had to be used. The United States Naval Hospital (USNH) Naples team won the race being only one of two teams to make it across the finish line. “It was awesome to win, but it wasn’t just me, it was my teammates and I,” said Hospitalman Amy Cheung. “They built the cart and I drove it; we worked together as a team and we won.” The last competition on the line-up was the tug-ofwar. Teams pulled against one another in a battle of strength. The stakes were high as the losing teams were pulled into a mud pit. Team Gaeta, representing Naval Support Activity Naples Detachment Gaeta, came out on top. The Armed Forces Olympics is organized to build friendships and keep morale high amongst service members. “This has a positive impact on the command because when you give service members days like this, it shows that we are looking out for their morale,” said Dietrich. “They come out here, they have a good time and get to know each other a little bit better, make jokes and have other things to talk about in the office besides work.” “It’s a big morale booster; it’s something to look forward to later in the year and to practice for,” said Builder 2nd Class Matthew Richardson, captain of the Public Works Department team and who was competing for his second year. After counting all the points earned by the teams, NCTS and USNH Naples were tied for second place. A homerun derby was held as a tiebreaker. NCTS

The Naples Navy College Office hosted a Graduation Recognition Ceremony, June 13, to honor 185 graduates during the academic year from the three colleges and universities on Naval Support Activity Naples as well as external institutions. “May 14th marked the 40th anniversary of Navy Voluntary Education,” said Ernie D’Antonio, director of the U.S. Navy’s Voluntary Education Program and keynote speaker for the Naples ceremony. “For the past 40 years Navy Voluntary Education has helped hundreds of thousands of Sailors just like you achieve their education dreams.” D’Antonio said Tuition Assistance (TA) is fully funded this year and as well as for fiscal year 2015. “We have money available so continue your education; get the courses in and we’ll approve the TAs,” said D’Antonio. “I don’t think enough service members are utilizing their opportunities to go to school,” said Information Systems Technician 2nd Class Christopher Struss from Lexington, Kentucky, assigned to Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Naples. “I’ve heard a lot of people say ‘Oh, I couldn’t take classes; I was on a ship.’ I completed ¾ of my degree on a ship. There’s time if you make time.” To get his degree quicker, Struss used both Tuition Assistance and the G.I. Bill to complete his Bachelor of Science in Information and Technology Management from American Military University. The processional event held in the Capodichino base theater recognized the 70 graduates able to attend the ceremony. Each had their name announced before walking across the stage and receiving their degree, which ranged from associate to a doctorate. “Each of you are a success and you have distin-

guished yourself by completing your degree,” said D’Antonio. The Navy College Program in Naples currently has more than 600 students enrolled in 61 different post-secondary institutions and serving in more than 80 commands. “Just like you, earning my degrees gave me experiences which made me a better man, a better person for my family, a better warrior and a better American,” said D’Antonio. “My degrees helped me accelerate my life.” “They have sacrificed many of their nights and weekends away from families and friends; they have managed to achieve a successful balance between work, school, family and friends,” said Naval Support Activity Naples Command Master Chief Ashley Drake during his remarks. “They have proved that hard work truly does pay off. They have remained dedicated to the pursuit of their educational goals for years to get to this point. Their determination is truly inspirational.”
