From Fleet and Family Support Center Naples

Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) Naples hosted their annual Ombudsman Pinning Ceremony at the Support Site office of Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples, March 13. “Ombudsmen provide a key role

in command teams, keeping their ears to the ground and their eyes on the community,” said Cmdr. Jay Driskell, executive officer of NSA Naples. The event celebrated 11 newlytrained Ombudsmen who are ready to take on the challenges and rewards of their volunteer position. “Ombudsmen share concerns or

issues from families and the community to the command, but many times provide resource referrals and advice as needed and are extremely instrumental in resolving family issues before, or even without, requiring command attention,” said Driskell. “In a nutshell, they help to provide that important connection to local resources and programs for

our family members.” Suzette Brown, FFSC Ombudsman coordinator, thanked all the volunteers who helped the area reach 100 percent capacity. She invited the volunteers in attendance to come up with a command representative and receive the Ombudsman pin. See NEW OMBUDSMEN Page 4

The Allied Forces Jazz Diplomats played a selection of jazz music from the 30s, 40s and 50s in honor of the anniversary. Musicians performed music made famous by artists like Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, Glenn Miller, and Frank Sinatra. "This was one of two concerts I've played at where we have just floored it and the audience went crazy," said Musician 2nd

Captain’s Corner

Base Notes

By Capt. Scott Gray NSA Commanding Officer

Remote Online Veterinary Record (ROVR) Implementation

Spring has sprung here in Naples, with youth sports, longer daylight hours, and summer just around the corner. There’s a lot to love about living in Campania, and the MWR and USO have packed schedules with plenty to get out and enjoy. There are two upcoming trips to the eastern coastal town of Alberobello in Puglia, a cruise to the western Mediterranean, and countless day trips to enjoy the sights and sounds of Naples. Eggstravaganza, the annual Easter celebration, will be held out at Carney Park again this year. There will be rides and activities for the kids, crafts, candy, and of course the Easter Bunny will be stopping in for a visit. The festivities will be held the day before Easter, Saturday, April 19. In May, the NEX Customer Appreciation Days will provide three days of entertainment and celebration, with live musical acts, a skateboard team, and martial arts demonstrations. The Independence Day “Festa Americana” celebration will be held July 5th at Carney Park, complete with food vendors, live entertainment and fireworks. It is shaping up to be a full summer here in Naples. We have much to appreciate in our day-to-day lives, especially for those on Support Site, who have likely seen the many playground makeovers in progress this spring. The skate park will be undergoing a revamp, starting in the next few weeks, that will see a full face-lift by summer-to include a new half pipe. New awnings continue to be installed for balconies in each housing unit, and we’ve been able to begin painting some of the buildings and do minor repair work on entryways. Please keep those new awnings rolled up when you head out of town for the weekend, or when a strong storm rolls in. They have been a long time in coming, and we may not be able to replace them again for a long time. This week we had a series of reported and confirmed gas leaks on the Support Site which Fire, Public Works, Housing, Mirabella and ENEL responded to. There were several exterior leaks that were repaired and some additional leaks in dryer gas lines. NSA has not identified system-wide problems that resulted in the flurry of leaks, but, nevertheless, we issued a PAO Note and advertised the issue to ensure everyone was aware and remained vigilant for leaks. If you suspect a leak, contact Emergency Dispatch so we can send out Fire/Housing to investigate and rectify any issues. A two- or three-year tour in Naples may seem like you have all the time in the world to explore Italy and Europe if you’re just starting out. Don’t let the months and years pass you by without enjoying all this duty station has to offer.

The Remote Online Veterinary Record (ROVR) system is being implemented in Veterinary Treatment Facilities at all military installations, to allow veterinary patient records to be electronically transferred to all military locations eliminating the need for paper medical records. ROVR training and implementation is scheduled between March 10 and June 19 at the NSA Naples VTF. Please be aware of the reduction in services during this time and immediately locate a local national veterinary facility for animal care. Please contact the Naples Veterinary Treatment Facility with any questions at: DSN 629-7913 or COMM: 081-811-7913.

Festa Americana Lodging Reservations for Fourth of July Weekend at Carney Park Reserve now for the holiday weekend in MWR’s, yurts, loft and tent sites. Two-night minimum is required. Festa Americana will be held on July 5 and features live entertainment, fireworks, and much more. Look for upcoming event details. To make lodging reservations, contact the NOR Center at 081-526-1579.

51 Areas Identified as Non-Cultivatable in Campania

and it represents the first example in the Caserta Diocese. The Church of Good Shepherd (Buon Pastore) is located in Piazza Pitesti 1, Caserta.

The Italian government has prohibited the farming and selling of produce from 51 areas in the Campania region after a recent decree signed by the Ministers of Health, Environment and Agriculture. The decree came after an investigation carried out by the Minister of Agriculture led to a mapped area showing different risk level areas in the 57 municipalities in the provinces of Naples and Caserta, a total area of 1,076 square kilometers. The areas were also determined by compiled reports identifying where illegal waste had previously been dumped. The highest risk areas, identified as risk 5, were in seven areas located in the municipalities of Acerra, Caivano, Giugliano, Succivo and Villa Literno. The other 44 sites, considered risks 3 and 4, were identified in Castel Volturno, Villa Literno, Nola, Acerra, Caivano and Giugliano. In total there are 158 acres of agricultural land, which corresponds to 2 percent within “the land of fires” and 0.14 percent within the Campania region. Produce from these areas cannot be placed on the market until further analysis is completed within the next ninety days. The owners could perform these analyses at their own expense. The Regional authority has also allocated a fund of 50 million euros to farmers who decide to perform their own tests as well as additional analysis, which are very costly.

Evacuated Gypsy Camp Burned to the Ground in Naples

Church in Caserta to Begin Holding Mass in English The Church of the Good Shepherd in Caserta will celebrate, for the first time, a mass entirely in English. The priest made the announcement Sunday and said that today, more than ever, man needs to be hosted and there cannot be communion without communication. The choice of a Mass celebrated in English shows a community that is ready to open its doors to anyone without distinction between ethnicity and skin color. The ceremony will be held every Friday at 7:30 p.m.

After altercations occurred between a group of gypsies living in a camp in Poggioreale, Naples and residents of the neighborhood, the camp was quickly evacuated. Later, the camp that hosted 300 people, including 180 minors, was set on fire under unclear circumstances. Another larger camp in Naples hosts approximately 700 people, including 200 children. The health and social conditions are extremely poor.

A Wall at the Cave of the Sibyl in Cuma Collapses A piece of wall collapsed at the Cave of the Sibyl in Cuma, in the province of Naples, last weekend. Many tourists found the entrance gates of the site closed. The collapse occurred a few days after a wall of the ancient Roman road in Arco Felice Vecchia collapsed due to water leaks. Archaeologists and geologists called for an urgent consolidation plan of the structure before more crumbling occurs.

Italian State Tourist Board Launches New Campaign A new tourism and cultural campaign was launched by the Italian State Tourist Board - ENIT. The campaign is aimed to highlight culture, wellness, gastronomy and wine, seas and lakes, artistic cities, mountains and parks, activity holidays and medieval village travel. The targets are potential tourists in European countries as well as in the United States and Russia. The tourist campaign includes television and cinema advertisements, promotions in newspaper, magazines, billboards and the internet. The five-million-euro campaign is being financed by the tourism board. The campaign website is www.italy.travel.it.

‘take care tea’ treats Women

The Naples Overseas Support Club (NOSC) hosted Take Care Tea in honor of International Women’s Day, March 8, and Women’s History Month. Women of all ages came out to take part in the unique event with a theme that focused on empowering women to take care of themselves, take care of their family and friends, and take care of their community. Margaret Smith, a local nurse midwife, gave an informative presentation on women’s health issues. Smith said, “The education and medical care of women is reflected in the increased prosperity and peace of their families, communities and nations,” said Smith. “Therefore, it is vital for all of us to promote, respect, and reflect upon the situations of the women of the world.” In addition to encouraging

women to stay healthy, representatives from the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society Visiting Nurse program spoke with attendees about their programs. Other local community organizations, such as USO Naples, Connect the Tots, NSA Religious Ministries Team, CREDO, the Fleet and Family Support Center, Protestant Women of the Chapel and the U.S. Naval Naples Health Hospital Promotions department also made information available to the guests. On the lighter side, several attendees participated in a game where participants guessed famous women of the past based on a few facts. For those who desired a little pampering, nail color and shaping services were graciously donated by Maile Coulter. Several people won some door prizes and each woman left with an arrangement of mimosa flowers, an Italian tradition for Women’s Day. One Take Care Tea contest

asked attendees to dress up as a woman they admire. Sevenyear-old Shoshana Levy won the contest dressed as Indira Ghandi, India’s first female prime minister. Another contestant, Julie Kavanagh, came dressed as World War II’s iconic Rosie the Riveter. "When I heard about the tea, I knew I wanted to come,” said Kavanagh. “Honoring women is very important, I think. We have come a long way and we will continue to fight to be treated as equal." NOSC is a local support organization open to all members of the NSA Naples community. It provides charitable funding, educational resources and social activities, as well as the Thrift Store, to our community. NOSC is currently seeking interested individuals to serve on its board 2014-2015; deadline March 31. If you are interested in serving on the 2014-2015 NOSC board or getting more information on the club, please visit www.nosci-

Davidson spoke about the sacrifices made by so many U.S. and Italians during World War II to ensure freedom and democracy. The Allied landing at Salerno followed their victory over Axis forces in Africa. Operation Avalanche called for landings in several places. After almost two weeks of heavy fighting, the Allies claimed victory after heavy casualties on the Allied side. The Allied Force Jazz Diplomats is an ensemble composed of U.S. Navy musicians and members of the Italian army, navy, and Carabinieri. They are a relatively new ensemble in the U.S. Naval Forces Europe Band. Formed less than two months ago, the band already plays concerts biweekly and has been invited to attend the 70th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy. "My experience is they love the jazz band,” said Musician 1st Class Jennifer Wilson, trombonist. “They know tunes like ‘New York, New York.’ All we need play is just a few bars of a song and the crowd will go crazy with applause." After revealing the next two songs were going to be Glenn Miller songs, the announcer walked off stage without saying the names of either song saying, "These need no introduction." As

Saharan express 2014 concludes From Saharan Express Public Affairs

Members of the U.S. Naval forces along with African and European maritime partners concluded the fourth annual multinational exercise, Saharan Express, in Dakar, Senegal, March 14. During Saharan Express 2014, which began March 6, maritime forces from seven African nations, five European nations and the United States executed a multitude of scenarios, resulting in sharpened strategic and tactical expertise designed to increase collaboration on regional maritime security. "Saharan Express is important because it is aimed at maritime security capacity building. This will help extend law and order into the waters that supply so many resources in all our countries," said Sandra Clark, charge d'affaires at the United States Embassy in Dakar. "This training will not only benefit West Africa and West Africans. This training will have a direct impact on security in Europe, North America and the rest of this evermore interconnected world. As economic growth improves, we will all see the benefits of a wealthier world with more trading partners. The benefits of your training will be felt an ocean away." The fourth annual exercise was conducted across three different operational hubs in waters near Cabo Verde and Senegal. Scenarios included counter-piracy, counter-illicit trafficking and illegal fishing. "I am pleased that the exercise scenarios that were selected and executed this year are realistic and perfectly reflect the treats proliferating in the maritime area of Africa," said Rear Adm. Cheikh Bara Cissokho, Senegalese chief of navy staff.

"Indeed, illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing drug trafficking and arms smuggling are scourges that require of all maritime stakeholders a constant vigilance and the continuous training of defense forces and security." Saharan Express is one of four African regional "Express" series exercises facilitated by U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet. The objective of the exercise was to increase regional cooperation, Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA)/information sharing and improve communications and interoperability among participating forces to strengthen regional partner nations' capabilities to counter maritime threats. "Each Saharan Express has built on the successes of the previous year's work. I am proud to say that we have helped to advance the region's ability to preserve maritime security through stronger professional bonds as well as improved communications and finely tuned skills," said U.S. Navy Capt. John Tokarewich, Saharan Express 2014 exercise director, during the closing ceremony here. Participating nations felt that the exercise was beneficial to improving skill sets that can be used in real-world operations. Additionally, African partners will play a larger role in planning future iterations of the annual exercise. "Saharan Express 2014 is a turning point since the beginning of the organization of the exercise. Indeed, this year was marked by the gradual transfer of responsibilities to the Navies and Coast Guards of West Africa with regard to planning, conduct of operations and logistical support. This is timely and fits perfectly in line with the objectives of the integrated Maritime Policy of the Economic Community of West African States," Cissoko said.

advancement exam readiness review Panels Seek rating Subject Matter experts By Katrina Gergely, Naval Education and Training Professional Development Technology Center Public Affairs

The latest Advancement Examination Readiness Review (AERR) schedule and request for volunteers was announced March 12 by the Naval Education and Training Professional Development Technology Center (NETPDTC) in Pensacola. Detailed in Naval Administrative Message (NAVADMIN) 052/14, Navy chiefs (E-7 to E-9) on active duty, Full Time Support (FTS), and Reservists on Active Duty for Special Work (ADSW) are encouraged to apply and participate in the process that helps identify the most qualified advancement candidates. The Navy Advancement Center (NAC) AERR fleet liaison, Peter Pappas, coordinates with learning center rating managers, detailers, and Type Commander representatives to select the best nominees. "Each enlisted rating has unique fleet subject matter expert (FSME) requirements calling for the right mix of skills and knowledge to support the AERR process," said Pappas. "The chiefs who are selected to participate in their rating's AERR must compliment other panel members so all aspects of the rating are represented. The NAC works closely with each community and Learning Center to obtain the appropriate combination of panel members." The reviews are held at Saufley Field in Pensacola, Fla. and FSME travel is funded by NETPDTC. The reviews run one or two weeks in length with each rating being reviewed about every two years. Updates to the AERR schedule are published quarterly. According to NETPDTC's Command Master Chief, Master Chief Electrician's Mate Eric Riddle, each AERR volunteer plays a vital role as a rating FSME; chiefs who are selected are responsible for determining the content of E-4 through E-7 rating advancement exams. "We have a dedicated staff of exam development professionals who know how to leverage the experience and rating expertise of our visiting chiefs," said Riddle. "Before the FMSEs leave to go back to their commands, they tell me how rewarding the AERR experience has been, and many return to the NAC to participate in subsequent panels." Applications to serve as a FSME for advancement exam development must be endorsed by the applicant's commanding officer or officer in charge, as well as the command master chief, senior chief or chief of the boat prior to submission to NETPDTC. Chiefs with experience in multiple platforms or recent experience on a major rating skill-set are highly desirable. There are seven eligibility requirements listed in the nomination package. Potential applicants should contact the NETPDTC point of contact listed in the NAVADMIN to request a waiver if needed. For application forms and additional requirements, visit https://www.nko.navy.mil/group/navy-advancement-center.

Detailers Given Authority to Alter Transfer Dates Adjustments Made to Fill Critical Sea Billets From Chief of Naval Personnel Public Affairs

In order for critical fleet vacancies to be filled on time, detailers can now write orders directing the detachment or transfer of enlisted Sailors up to six months prior to their projected rotation date or as late as six months after their PRD. “This change gives the detailers increased authority and flexibility to reduce gaps in fleet requirements," said Fleet Master Chief April Beldo, fleet master chief for manpower, personnel, training and education. "We're working to improve enlisted fleet manning and reduce gaps at sea, but there are times when fleet vacancies and associated training requirements do not align well with availability dates. This change is about opening up the detailing window so we can ensure on-time arrival of the right Sailor with the right training to fleet commands." Sailors who wish to extend at sea or return to sea duty early may be entitled to receive an incentive pay along with a choice of duty station via the Voluntary Sea Duty Program (VSDP). Updated instructions outlining the VSDP guidelines are forthcoming, but Sailors can continue to refer to NAVADMINs 043/12 and 205/12 until the updates are released. Beldo said the process enlisted Sailors use for selecting orders will not change. "This won't bring any significant process changes for Sailors," said Beldo. "You will still enter your normal nine-month PRD window and negotiate orders through CMS/ID. If you are being considered for early return to sea (ERS), your detailer will let you know. If you are selected for an ERS requirement your orders may direct

you to transfer earlier, or later, than your PRD." Here are four things you need to know about the changes: 1. Enlisted detailers will fill as many high priority E-4 to E-9 sea duty requirements as possible by fully using the authorized transfer window of "-6/+6." Involuntary curtailment of shore duty at 24 months will only be used when there are limited Sailors available in the PRD window and there are no excess personnel on sea duty within the geographic area that can be reassigned. 2. PRDs will not be adjusted and the current CMS/ID application and selection policies will remain unchanged. Sailors will continue to enter their CMS/ID order negotiation window nine months prior to their PRD. However, when they are selected for their next assignment their orders may direct their transfer earlier than the previous "-3/+4" PRD transfer window allowed. 3. Actual transfer dates will be determined by the commencement of training for the prospective job and the date of the anticipated fleet vacancy they're ordered to fill. This change to the PCS transfer timeframe is driven by the need to ensure on-time arrival of the right Sailor, with the right training to fleet commands. 4. Nuclear enlisted Sailors will have their initial sea tour PRDs set in accordance with their prescribed sea tour lengths. This change removes unnecessary administration from the ships; allows for more accurate personnel inventory reports; and provides Sailors with more accurate PRDs upon receipt of orders to their initial CVN sea tour.

Dietary Supplements: Potentially Unsafe Unless Informed From Chief of Naval Personnel Public Affairs

March is Navy Nutrition and the Navy's Month Nutrition Office, part of the 21st Century Sailor Office, is committed to spreading the word on healthy eating. A recent article in Nutrition Journal suggests that people looking to take a dietary sup-

plement already have somewhat of a healthy eating pattern with regular exercise in their routine. Supplements may be necessary if adequate nutrition is not available through food due to reasons such as medical conditions that affect the digestive system, food allergies, intolerances, or being on a medically supervised special diet with food restrictions.

Otherwise, having a well-balanced dietary pattern with a variety of foods is adequate and more effective than taking supplements. Dietary supplement marketing claims to solve numerous health problems, from relieving symptoms of simple medical concerns like the common cold to stopping a heart attack dead in its tracts. If dietary supplements really worked and produced a true quick and lasting solution to any health concern, then we would all be in optimal health without the need to visit the doctor. The Los Angeles Times reported in 2013 that Americans spend just under $30 billion each year in dietary supplements including vitamins, herbs, and other such products that promise more energy, weight loss, or more muscle mass. It's foolish to believe the marketing and hype surrounding a product without doing the proper research. Some news articles claim supplements to be safe, where science and research may say otherwise. Supplement labeling and ingredients are not always accurate and sometimes misleading. Last year the DoD removed Jack3d and Oxyelite Pro, along with 17 other supplement brands, from the retail stores on military bases. This was because the label claimed one of the ingredients, geranium, as a natural plant derivative, when in actuality, the real ingredient in these supplements was 1,3dimethylamylamine (DMAA), a synthetic drug used in the 1940s as a nasal decongestant. DMAA has been linked to severe side effects like heat injuries, seizures, brain hemorrhages, and heart problems. There may be numerous other supplements currently on the market that have unknown and potentially harmful ingredients in them. Visit Operation Supplement Safety (OPSS) at http://hprconline.org/dietary-supplements/opss to get the latest tools and resources to help you make a wise and informed decision when purchasing supplements.

What you Should Know about colon cancer Prevention By Cmdr. Henry John Zielinski, U.S. Naval Hospital Naples

How many of us would not want to be warned in advance that something bad, but preventable is about to happen? That the email attachment we are about to open contains a virus capable of trashing our computer or that the brake pads on our family car are on the verge of failure? Being in the habit of practicing preventive maintenance and applying a bit of common sense can make the difference between experiencing misfortune and avoiding disaster. And so it is with our healthcare. Although Ben Franklin knew absolutely nothing about the wonders of 21st century medicine when he first coined the phrase “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” it would be hard to think of a better description for the benefits of colonoscopy, a painless procedure which has become one of healthcare’s most effective methods of preventive maintenance. This low-risk outpatient procedure can detect the earliest changes leading to colon cancer and in most cases can effectively treat them at the same time, avoiding the need for major abdominal surgery. Over the past three decades our understanding of this problem has grown dramatically. For various reasons, with the passage of time the cells lining the large intestine change in character; first morphing into unusual forms, then heaping up in abnormal growths known as a polyps. Left untreated the cells making up certain kinds of polyps can and will continue to change for the worse resulting in a cancerous tumor. Did you know that worldwide colon cancer is tied with breast cancer as the third most common malignancy? The good news is that this process of unhealthy change does not happen overnight. The downhill slide from benign polyp to colon cancer usually takes several years to occur. Routine colonoscopy performed as recommended by the American Cancer Society gives the best chance of finding these polyps and having them removed painlessly before any malignant changes have occurred. For the average patient, a screening colonoscopy should be performed at age 50. A clean bill of health following that test makes you “good to go” for the next ten years. If a parent or sibling has been diagnosed with colon cancer or certain types of polyps, screening should begin no later than age 40. Anyone who is currently noticing worrisome changes in their usual bowel habit (like the passage of blood) should contact their primary care provider regardless of their age to see if colonoscopy might be a good idea. Common sense and a habit of preventive maintenance can go a long way in making life more trouble free. If these screening guidelines apply to you, call to schedule an appointment and to get more information on colonoscopy; it might be the smartest thing you have ever done. With your current access to quality healthcare, getting an ounce of prevention against colon cancer is an offer you probably can’t afford to pass up.

More than 180 Sailors gathered at the Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples youth center gymnasium on the Support Site to take the second class petty officer advancement exam, March 13. Test takers began waiting in line to enter the gymnasium around 6 a.m. Some talked with their friends, while others stood preparing. “I’m excited and nervous,” said Aerographers Mate 3rd Class Alexandria Bahr. “I’m ready to get it over with.” A lot of Sailors said they were nervous, yet eager to take the exam. “This is my first time taking the second class exam,” said Master-at-Arms 3rd class Dave Tillman Jr. “I’m a little nervous, but I have studied a lot.” The Naples Area Second Class Petty Officers Association provided breakfast and encouragement for their fellow Sailors waiting to take the exam. “We know how nerve-racking it can be, so if we can make someone more comfortable and make their morning right before they take the exam, we hope that will help,” said Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Emily Williams, public affairs officer for the Naples Area Second Class Petty Officer Association. The Sailors entered the gymnasium and found their assigned tables. Lt. Cmdr. Andrew Hoffman, officer in charge for NSA Naples Personnel Support Detachment (PSD), read the advancement exam instructions while proctors checked on discrepancies and collected all cellular phones.

Sailors are allotted three yours to take their exam. After more than two hours, Information Systems Technician 3rd Class Dakota Pierce completed his test. He said some of the test was difficult, but he thinks he did well. “The only sure thing that is going to help you is studying and knowing the material,” said Pierce. Completed exams are transported to PSD at NSA Capodichino to be processed and sent to the Naval Education and Training Professional Development and Technology Center (NETPDTC) in Pensacola, Fla. “I’m checking everything for discrepancies before the exams are sent to NETPDTC,” said Personnel Specialist 2nd Class David Olvera, assistant educational service officer for NSA Naples PSD. “If there is a mistake, it can prevent a Sailor from advancing.” Sailors are advanced based on their final multiple score. It is made up of pass-but-notadvanced (PNA) points, award points, time in rate and the score from the exam. Once a Sailor’s final multiple is determined, it is graded against everyone else in their rate that took the exam. One mistake with a final multiple score can affect every other Sailor’s chances of advancing. “It’s very rewarding if I catch a discrepancy on a Sailor’s information,” said Olvera. “People have been passed up on advancement by one point.” With advancement exams across the Navy reviewed and sent to NETPDTC, Sailors will have to wait around two months for their results and to see if they get promoted.

It’s no secret. I’m royally under performing as “Mr. Mom.” Tracy is away for 12 days with our two oldest daughters, and I’m home with our youngest three, seven- and six-years-old respectively. Yes, twins. Yes, all girls. It has been a storm of clogged toilets, hair messes, waking up with little people’s legs on my back, middle-of-the-night ailments, meal snubbing, and I even forgot to put back the cap to the car engine after filling it up with oil - yeah, it has been a mess; nothing too bad, just constant. It feels like they can sense momma is not around, so it’s like the flood gates have been busted open and everything goes! This morning however, was a different story. As they all climbed on my bed around six in the morning, I opened the computer and checked ESPN, Facebook, and CNN. Next thing I know I have all three of them surrounding me wanting to see what I had on the screen. Probably out of a sense of obligation I opened another tab and started watching kid videos. One of the videos they all tuned in to was a sing-along version of “Love is an Open Door” from the Disney film Frozen. They sang it, I sang it, and then we all did. Different versions, parodies, and interpretations, we saw them all. The rest of the morning went pretty smooth-

ly to tell you the truth. Teeth were brushed, breakfast eaten, snacks made, and we all drove to school singing “Love is an Open Door”, again, again and again. It’s funny how when I lead them into a tune, they all want to follow. I lead, they follow. I am the dad; they are the daughters. This makes me stop and think, what is the tune I usually sing to them? It’s usually the tune of “let me do my own thing.” Other times, it’s the “be good while I am at the computer.” More often than not, I play the “mom is in charge therefore I am not here” tune. I wonder what would happen if I’m more intentional in leading my own kids into fun, formational, and engaging tunes? I wonder if this morning could bleed over and become the norm, rather than the exception? Love, indeed, is an open door. It is open for us parents to lead.

Obtaining your Sojourner Permit Italian law requires all foreign personnel working or living within Italy, other than an active-duty member under military orders, to obtain a Sojourner Permit within eight days of arrival in Italy. This is different from a visa, which is merely an approval for entry into the country. All applicants over 14 years of age must apply in person, as each person's signature is required at the time of application. NATIONALS OF ANY STATE OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY COMING TO ITALY DO NOT REQUIRE ANY VISA OR SOJOURNER PERMIT. As part of the Area Orientation process, the U.S. Region Legal Service Office (RLSO EURAFSWA) assists in the preparation and oversees the acquisition of the Sojourner Permit for all personnel attached to U.S. Navy commands in the Naples area. Army and Air Force personnel stationed at JFC must apply through the Carabiniere at the JFC Provost Marshall's Office, Building L. Contact Connie Henderson, RLSO EURAFSWA liaison advisor, at 081-568-4639 for more information.

In the event of an emergency or to report a crime, please call the Emergency Dispatch Center at 081-568-4911 or 5911. (On-Base Dial 9-1-1)
