we came here and the guys here in Naples gave us a much more competitive game.” The players for Penn said they were very appreciative of the opportunity to come to Italy and play basketball with the men and women who protect their country. See NAPLES VERSUS PENN Page 13
CNO Releases Navigation Plan for 2014-2018 By MCC Julianne Metzger, Chief of Naval Operations Public Affairs
This week, Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Jonathan Greenert released his Navigation Plan for the Navy for 2014 to 2018 to the fleet. Drawing from the Sailing Directions and the three tenets of warfighting first, operate forward and be ready, the Navigation Plan defines the course and speed the Navy will follow to organize, train and equip over the next several years. Greenert also addresses budgetary concerns about continuing resolutions, sequestration and preparations for the fiscal year 2014 budget in the document.
"Our first consideration is the ability to fight and win today, while building the ability to win tomorrow," said Greenert. "Regardless of reductions, we will continue to operate forward with ready forces, where it matters, when it matters." Greenert stated that despite future reduction to Navy's budget that may impact the ability to maintain the overall size of the fleet, the Navy will ensure that the deployable force is proficient and ready. This will include fielding and improving "kill chains", utilizing the electromagnetic spectrum and maintaining the Navy's undersea dominance. see NAVIGATION PLAN Page 6

Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Stand Down for Civilians
Aug. 28-29: Sexual Assault Training from Central Michigan University
Though it seems incredible, summer is nearly over and the temperatures are beginning to moderate, Festa Americana is a distant memory, and to the collective dismay of students, school starts next week. For many families in the community, the last few weeks have been a flurry of activity gearing up for fall sports, shopping for back-toschool supplies, and keeping an eye on the furlough schedule. For those who are unaware, furlough days have been cut. Sorry kids, no three day weekends in September! Yesterday, USNH Naples hosted a Sports Physical Rodeo which provided dozens of students with the needed wellness visits and paperwork for fall sports at Naples High School. For those families who are just PCSing into the area, or who have missed getting their children seen for sports physicals, all paperwork is due at the school by close of business today. Make sure you call the hospital and get in touch with the school directly if you’re behind the curve; our outstanding medical professionals will make every effort to have new arrivals to the area seen same-day. This afternoon, Naples Middle and High School will host the 3rd Annual Back2School Block Party from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. The event will take place in front of the school, and will feature food, music, fun and the 2nd annual Chalk the Walk competition. The block party is a great way for all families, especially those new to the area, to get to know their teachers for the fall, go on walking tours of the building and classrooms, and get a look at activities for kids during the school year. For families who have just PCSed to the area this summer, or for those who have children starting school for the first time, the block party can be a great way to alleviate anxiety in kids and parents. Additionally, fall means flu shots, and again this year I will be working with Capt. Pommer at USNH Naples to ensure they are available to all at no cost. Get your family out early for this care when it becomes available. It can greatly impact the quality of life of not just your household, but also the workplace and wider community. As always, the end of the summer remains busy at NSA Naples. Tomorrow, MWR will host a 5k Mud Run at Carney Park. The Toastmasters, Single Sailors and NATO Lions football team are all resuming fall schedules in the coming days. Next week, Fleet and Family Services Center, in conjunction with the Department of the Navy’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response’s Office, will host No Zebras training at Capo, Gaeta and Support Site for all personnel. I encourage you to participate in this powerful training. Until then, enjoy the cooler temperatures and a last trip or two before summer ends!
SAPR-C is mandatory training for all appropriated fund (APF) personnel, non-appropriated fund (NAF) personnel and military who supervise Department of Navy civilians. Local nationals and contractors are invited, but not required to attend. Maximum class size is 50 personnel and will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. The last August session will be at the Capo theater (NF4/GS9 and above) Wednesday, Aug. 28 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Please contact Lt. Daggett at DSN 626-4367 or kaysie.daggett@eu.navy.mil with any questions.

Mount Whitney Arrives in France, Celebrates Liberation By MC1 Collin Turner, USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20) Public Affairs Office
The 6th Fleet flagship USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20) arrived in Theoule-sur-Mer, France, Aug. 13, to partake in commemorative events honoring the liberation of southern France by Allied forces during World War II. The port call marked the third-consecutive year that Mount Whitney took part in the festivities organized by the city of Theoule-sur-Mer. "This is an important port visit for Mount Whitney and for the U.S. Navy," said Capt. Craig Clapperton, Mount Whitney's commanding officer. "This port call recognizes and celebrates the friendship and alliance between the United States and France on the anniversary of the liberation of southern France from Nazi Germany." While in port, Mount Whitney Sailors joined residents and city officials in several cultural events designed to pay tribute to the men and women who fought to liberate France from the occupying forces of Nazi Germany. Events included wreath laying ceremonies, town square speeches, full military honors in Draguignan and several
other activities hosted by the Navy League of the United States and the city of Theoulesur-Mer. "Having the opportunity to witness and take part in such momentous ceremonies will be a memorable highlight of my first time in France," said Navy Counselor 1st Class Jerry Wagoner. "I'm also looking forward to visiting Theoule-sur-Mer and the surrounding towns and cities to enjoy everything they have to offer." Aside from the events sponsored by the Navy league and
Theoule-sur-Mer, the ship hosted a reception on board for local dignitaries and the citizens of Theoule-sur-Mer as a 'thank you' for hosting Mount Whitney and her crew. "This port visit gives us a great opportunity to host the U.S. Ambassador to France and Monaco and the largest U.S. Navy League organization in Europe onboard the 6th Fleet flagship," said Clapperton. "It is a fantastic opportunity for engagement for all involved, and the entire crew is very much looking forward to the week."

Beat the Heat By MC2 Josh Bennett, Navy Public Affairs Support Element-East Detachment Europe
With the ‘Dog Days of Summer’ upon us, it is important to be aware of the potential health risks that are common this time of year and learn ways to avoid them. “We can’t stress enough how important it is to keep yourself hydrated,” said Hospitalman William Z. Fore, safety petty officer at Naval Branch Health Clinic Capodichino. “Many heat related injuries are a result of a lack of hydration or can quickly become more severe if the person isn’t hydrated.” Some other ways to combat heat related injuries are to pre-hydrate and to exercise in groups when exercising outside. “When we have nice weather, people become like to go for a run outside,” said Fore. “It’s smart to run with a partner if you are going to run outside, especially in this heat. If you’re running with a friend, he could notice warning signs you may be showing and would be able to help you get the attention you need before its gets worse.” Some warning signs you may see in people experiencing a heat injury include dizziness, headaches, irritability, confusion, flushed face and shortness of breath. When these symptoms occur, it is essential to address the problem as quickly as possible to avoid a more serious situation. “If someone is experiencing heat exhaustion, you
can help the situation by getting them out of the heat and to a place where they can cool down, such as an air conditioned room,” said Fore. “You want to make sure it doesn’t get to the point where it becomes a heat stroke, because then it becomes a serious medical emergency.” If someone is experiencing a heat stroke, it is important to get them medical attention as soon as possible. Immediate attention is required because someone experiencing a heat stroke could go into shock or into a coma. NSA Naples currently uses the flag system to help aide the service members assigned to the base in making good decisions regarding physical training in the heat. With this system, a flag is shown to show which current heat condition the base is in. The different flags are: • White: Extremely intense physical exertion may precipitate heat exhaustion or heat stroke, therefore, caution should be taken. • Green: Discretion required in planning heavy exercise for unseasoned personnel. This is a marginal heat stress limit for all personnel. • Yellow: Strenuous exercise and activity (e.g. close order drill) should be curtailed for new personnel that have not acclimated during the first three weeks of heat exposure. • Red: Strenuous exercise curtailed for all personnel with less then 12 weeks training in hot weather. • Black: Physical training and strenuous exercise suspended for all personnel (excluding operational commitment not for training purposes). For more information on heat related injuries, stop by the U.S. Naval Hospital Naples on the Support Site or the Naval Branch Health Clinic
You Don't Trust Me From Love and Logic Institute, Inc.
Does this scenario sound familiar? "The trouble with you is that you just don't trust me. If you did, you wouldn't be asking these stupid questions about where I'm going and stuff." Britney is railing against her mom's wanting some simple explanations about the party Britney and her friends are going to. We've all heard this ultimate teen manipulation. Britney expects her mom to feel guilty and back off. She's hoping to hear a response like, "Of course I trust you. All I want to know is where you're going to be and … " If this happens, this typical teen can then take mom on a series of "bird walks" until she wears down and gives in while never actually getting the information she was looking for. Let's give this mom a pat on the back and an extra high five for her response. "Actually Britney," she says, "there are several issues here. I trust that you are very smart, I trust that you have the best of intentions, and I trust that your short 16 years of life has yet to give you the wisdom to
handle all situations." "Wisdom comes from intelligence combined with experience. So, yes, I trust that your wisdom will come after a lot more experience. Until you've lived long enough to

NAVIGATION PLAN Continued from Page 1
The document also addresses the rebalance toward the Asia-Pacific region, a strategy that will compel the Navy to add ships to the forward deployed naval force, and increase the number of ships which are forward stationed or forward operating. "The Navy and Marine Corps are our nation's 'away team'," said Greenert. "History demon-
strates the Navy is at its best when we are forward and ready to respond." Lastly, the Navigation Plan stresses the importance of having Sailors and civilians that are ready to tackle tomorrow's challenges by being personally prepared, confident and proficient. "We will sustain our forces' warfighting capability and ability to operate forward through effective maintenance and timely modernization," said Greenert. "Ready Sailors and Civilians remain the source of the Navy's warfighting capability." To view the CNO's Navigation Plan, visit www. navy.mil/cno/130813_CNO_Navigation_ Plan.pdf
Continue to serve through Conversion By MC2 Andrea Perez, Navy Personnel Command Public Affairs
Conversion programs allow Sailors from all walks of life to make a major job change and continue their Navy careers, officials said Aug. 21. Several Continuum of Service (CoS) conversion programs that apply to eligible officer and enlisted Sailors who are currently serving on active duty or in the Reserves are outlined in NAVADMIN 198/13. To date, thousands of Sailors have converted to different ratings, allowing the Navy to keep Sailors who are committed to a career in the Navy. According to a new conversion status report on the Active Duty Conversions Web Page on www.npc.navy.mil, more than half of active duty conversion requests in 2013 have already been approved. Applications for conversion can be submitted by detailers, command career counselors (CCCs) or
anyone with prior access to Fleet-RIDE through the new Career Waypoint (C-WAY) information technology system. A NAVPERS 5239/8 (SAAR Addendum) is required to access C-WAY. Active-duty enlisted Sailors, in conjunction with reenlistment applications submitted via the C-WAY-Reenlistment process, can voluntarily request to change ratings. Reserve Sailors, working with their CCC, can view and apply for a rating conversion through C-WAY-Conversion. Active-duty and Reserve officers interested in conversion can request a voluntary designator change. Requests for Reserve designator changes are considered continuously, while requests for AC designator changes are decided by a lateral transfer board twice a year. Per MILPERSMAN 1440-010, requests for conversion into ratings that are properly manned, will only be considered on a case-by-case basis and requests for conversion to overmanned ratings will not be considered.

Nsa Naples Collects donations Petty Officer for Local Church Selectee Leadership By MC2 Jared King, Navy Public Affairs Support Element-East Detachment Europe
The fifth annual Feds Feed Families food drive campaign, sponsored by the Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples Chapel, is accepting donations now through Aug. 28. Donations can be placed in marked collection bins in various locations throughout the base and will be given to the Bible Baptist Church in Lago Patria. “In addition to nonperishable goods, we donate money collected from our religious services,” said Cmdr. Manuel Biadog Jr., NSA Naples’ command chaplain. “One dollar is equivalent to five pounds of food, so if we give 1,000 dollars that is equivalent to 50,000 pounds of food and we have donated quite a lot in just the last two weeks.” Biadog Jr. said there is no government-wide collection goal for 2013, but every donation big or small will be significant in the lives of those families in need. Since the campaign began in 2009, participants have donated and collected 15.2 million pounds of food and other non-perishable items. “I just wanted to give back when I saw the impact it made last year and all the people who came together to make it happen,” said Religious Programs Specialist 2nd Class Jacob Miller, assigned to NSA Naples. “I knew I wanted to be a part of it especially since the program reflects the goodwill and appreciation that we have for our host nation.” According to the food drive’s official website, Defense Department employees worldwide have been asked to step up to meet this challenge by pledging to “participate and make a difference!” In his memo, Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter expressed his support of the campaign and encouraged the workforce to donate non-perishable food items to their offices through August for distribution to local food banks. “The Navy is all about doing something good for our neighbors; we are trying to help out people in our local community who are less fortunate
and need help,” said Biadog. “We have homeless shelters, orphanages and refugees from Ghana and Nigeria in our area and life will be much more meaningful when we are able to help these people in need.” All base employees are invited to participate, including contractors, civilians, military members and veterans.
“It’s all about helping and the Navy projecting goodwill,” said Biadog. “It is our culture in America, we are a giving nation. In addition to nonperishable goods, educational materials are also accepted at the marked collection bins. For more information about “Fed’s Feed Families,” visit http://www. fedsfeedfamilies.gov/.

Courses Updated By Susan D. Henson, Center for Personal and Professional Development Public Affairs
Updated versions of the Petty Officer Selectee Leadership courses have been released, said the courses' manager at the Center for Personal and Professional Development Aug. 20. Chief Aviation Boatswain's Mate Handling (AW/SW) James Priest, manager of the courses, said that the changes were announced in Naval Administrative (NAVADMIN) message 207/13 and applies to Petty Officer Selectee Leadership Course (POSLC), Petty Officer Second Class Selectee Leadership Course (PO2SLC), and Petty Officer First Class Selectee (PO1SLC) Leadership Course. "As the NAVADMIN said, we added Sexual Assault Prevention and Response and Combat/Operational Stress Control modules to the courses, per Chief of Naval Operations the Defense Department instructions, as well as the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012," he said. "Commands must update their curricula to ensure they are teaching the correct version of these courses to newly selected E-4 to E-6 petty officers." The NAVADMIN references the instructions, which directed the military services to include Sexual Assault Prevention and Response training and education in all leadership training and also that the training be tailored for each leadership level. The services were additionally directed to ensure leaders serving at all levels understand Combat/Operational Stress Control Policy and management strategies. "Commands will need to go to NKO to download the updated courses, then follow the directions in the change letters to make the required changes to integrate the new content into the printed leadership course materials they already have. Or they can download the entire revised courses with the changes already made," Priest said. Capt. John Newcomer, CPPD's commanding officer, said the course revisions were a top priority for the CPPD curricula development team. "Our Training Directorate team members worked hard to deliver this revised content as soon as possible for fleet use," he said. "SAPR and OSC are both timely issues for the Navy to address. Completing these necessary course updates supports CPPD's goal to provide training that will equip Sailors to think critically, act responsibly and lead proactively to meet the ever changing global challenges our Navy faces every day." A Paradise Discovered: The Island of Zakynthos From USO Naples
The Greek islands are a popular vacation spot for thousands of European tourists every year. Yet if Corfu, Santorini, Crete and Rhodes are some of the most well known vacations hubs in the Ionian Sea, the USO “discovered the uncontaminated, paradise island of Zakynhthos. What is most captivating about Zakynthos, are the quiet mountain roads leading to the secluded beaches nestled in between the sharp-edged rocks. During our trip we could not resist the temptation to take a boat ride and go turtle spotting in the bay, take advantage of the water sports, admire the beautiful sceneries and of course, savor the delicious Greek specialties. Unlike other tourist meccas, the island had delivered what the body and soul truly needed; relaxation. Getting away from traffic, ringing mobile phones, and television was as refreshing as a dive in the blue waters of its bays. Needless to say, the community members that joined the USO this year on a weeklong getaway to Zakynthos said they loved every minute on the island. Visit www.uso.it for more information on tour opportunities.

A Conversation with Vice Adm. Bill Moran Chief of Naval Personnel From Defense Media Activity Vice Adm. Bill Moran assumed the duties as the 57th Chief of Naval Personnel Aug. 2. He is responsible for the overwhelming majority of policies and programs that directly affect Sailors and their families. Moran takes helm of a command that has an operating budget of $29 billion and a staff of more than 26,000 Sailors and civilians that perform a wide variety of missions, including managing Navy manpower, readiness, education and training, and professional development of Sailors. Q- What are your expectations? What do you hope to be able to do during your tenure as Chief of Naval Personnel? A- Well, I've thought about it a lot coming into the job. Principally, having come from the resource sponsorship over in director of air warfare and watching the challenges that we are going to be faced with in the Department of Defense and Department of the Navy going forward, the fiscal challenges ahead of us are going to be pretty difficult to deal with. So, any time you've got that kind of fiscal pressure on an organization, there's likely to be a lot of change, and there's likely to be a lot of pressure to reduce force structure, potentially reduce the number of folks we have in the Navy, and that creates a sense of uncertainty throughout the fleet. So my goal, hopefully at the end of my tenure here, is that we've been able to manage that in such a way that there is less uncertainty for Sailors and their families and the workforce. And we're able to find the right balance for the fleet so that they continue to operate forward, as Adm. Greenert [Chief of Naval Operations] talks about, we continue to put warfighters on the front lines, and that we are ready to go operate in any environment when called upon. And I think the Navy, in this environment, is going to be called upon more and more because coming out of Afghanistan and coming out of Iraq, there's a great sense that someone still has to be forward, keeping watch, being out there ready to protect the nation's interests, and I think the Navy's going to be a principal force in that. You know, it's a long-winded answer to basically saying a lot of change is coming, potentially, a lot of change, a lot of pressure and a lot of uncertainty. So if I can help reduce that uncertainty, and give
some stability and balance to the force, I think we'll have a successful time here. Q- You mentioned a lot about uncertainty. What are some of the things that you can do in your position to quell some of that uncertainty in the fleet and give a little reassurance to the fleet? A- It's going to take me a little bit of time and going out and talking to the fleet first. I really have to understand what's on their minds, what are they reading, what do they believe is the future from their perspective? I have my own perspective as a resource sponsor, but I've been locked up in the Pentagon for three years, and I haven't had the opportunity to get out and listen to the Sailors ... and folks that are operating forward. So I look forward to doing that. And once I get that sense from them, I think I'll be able to get back here and talk to the N1 and the personnel workforce that is trying to set the right policies, set the right tone, so that they have confidence in our decision making about the future. So it's too early for me to say, "I have the following things I'm going to do to create certainty." I need to get out to the fleet and really understand where they feel there's an uncertainty in the future. Q- Can you tell me about your three "key words?" A- I think they are words that resonate with everybody. Trust is one. I think if you're in the detailing business, or in the personnel business, often times, you don't feel like your constituents, the fleet, trusts you because there are many policies that come out and they seem counterintuitive, and sometimes they counter each other, and so people aren't real sure where you're trying to go. I think that if we're going to be trusted by the fleet - and we have to be - we've got to get out and we've got to talk to them. We've got to understand what their concerns are, and we've got to show them through our actions and our policies, that we understand what is important to them, and what's important to the CNO, the Secretary, and the institution. And as long as we are doing that well, openly, and transparently, I think we'll earn their trust over time. Q- And what about balance? A- Balance is a lot of what you're seeing today when we're talking about fit fill. There is a
lot of discussion in the fleet about, "Do we have the right fit for the type of Sailor with the right NEC, and the right experience levels at different places ... operating in the fleet?" And then there's the fill - I just need a body to be able to do certain types of work. Admiral Gortney [Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command] and his team are really driving us to try to satisfy the demand signal for the right Sailor at the right place at the right time, and there's a balance to that because you can take all the Sailors you have at shore and put them to sea, and fill out the gaps that currently exist at sea, but then you leave big holes, potentially, in the shore establishments that train the Sailors that are going to sea. We've got to balance the sea and the shore piece correctly. We've got to balance the right training to effectively get the Sailor we want in a particular billet that is trained to the highest degree possible, given the time constraints, and making sure the ships and aircraft squadrons and submarines deploy with the right people. Q- So, it takes a combination of trust and balance to reach the stability we're looking for? A- Yes, stability takes a lot of meaning, but you're right. It is a combination. If we find the right balance and we achieve the trust, then there is a stabilizing influence in the lives of Sailors and their families because they are not guessing what's coming next. In this environment, where a lot of change could occur, that stability is going to come in the form of making sure that we don't change policies just for change's sake. That we find the right policies that are going to give that balance and trust back to the Sailors in a way that gives them ... a greater sense of certainty. And I think inherent in that is the stability that comes from smart policies and smart manning in the fleet. Q- What are the sorts of things, at this stage, do you imagine are going to keep you up at night? A- You know, nothing really stresses me out on the job. It is a big job, you're right. I am just beginning to understand the breadth and depth involved in the N1 organization. We're obviously split between Washington, D.C., and another major hub, Millington, [Tennessee], where the primary workforce that interfaces with the fleet exists. So that's a big piece. The time-distance issue for the organization is important. And then, of course, the rest of our domain includes Great Lakes and all the recruiting
districts around the country, and a variety of other smaller organizations. So there's a lot going on that, frankly, after one week, I'm just beginning to understand. So it's going to take a little time. I think what keeps me up at night is thinking about how we're going to manage the force if we are asked to get smaller, and making sure that manning does not become the first thing we give up in this give-and-take over the amount of money that we are going to have to account for in the budget. So, manning is a fundable asset, in the sense that it's a lot easier to carve out, or harvest cash to pay bills with manpower than it is [with] ships and airplanes and submarines, because of all the intricacies in building platforms. My job is to protect that manning, so we don't inadvertently cut the manning to the point where the force of the fleet is not wellserved, and we have an issue with the appropriate level of manning at sea. That is probably the biggest challenge - just trying to ensure that we get the right manning for whatever size force comes in the future. Q- What can Sailors do at their level do to help you support them? A- My intent is to get out a lot and talk to the fleet and to have a conversation with Sailors. That is the most important thing. Their direct feedback to me is really important as I bring that information back to my organization here in the N1 CNP. I obviously appreciate and observe the chain of command, but being out and about and listening and watching Sailors operate in the fleet and seeing what their concerns are will only work if they are willing to have a conversation and ask me questions and give me feedback on what they think is working, and what they think is not working. Q- What is your message to the Sailors in the fleet? A- You've got a great organization up here that understands the interest of Sailors, families, civilians, and retirees - that we are trying very hard to stay on top of a changing environment and be responsive enough to make sure that we're anticipating the issues that are going to face us in a very tough, challenging fiscal environment in the future. We have your best interest at heart and we're going to work hard for Sailors and families to make sure that they understand whatever changes are being made, they understand the reasoning and the rationale behind them, but that also we're here fighting for them every single day.

Cedillo is responsible for communicating with all incoming and outgoing staff, and he serves as the link between sponsors and new check-ins. He also ensures that the hospital staff ’s passports, pay, and travel are in order before the members depart at the end of their tour. I’ve had better days. I’ve been running programs with teens for more than a decade now. Eventually I’d hit an “off day,” you know, a paper doesn’t get turned in on time, the amount of kids you were planning on don’t show up, plans don’t pan out as expected, or the difficulty of necessary corrective discipline. However, I’d have to say my past trip has to rank up there in the list of infamous “Lost Trips.” The day started off late, and got worse due to part of our group getting lost on their way to the water park. Our late arrival by at least 30 minutes, caused parents who were already waiting for us at the park some discomfort. Upon our arrival the credit card we were supposed to use for the students’ entrance fee was declined… over and over again. Needless to say I had to come up with an alternative way of paying. For this particular trip we had purchased one of my favorite waterproof cameras to document the great time we would have playing and splashing in the water. Half way through the day our students lost this camera. Let me say that last part again, this particular camera, which was key in documenting our Club Beyond Naples trips was gone, lost, vanished. Lost finding this place, lost time, lost money and lost camera for our program; the one thing that wasn’t lost was grace. In spite of it all, I was surprised I was not upset with my students. Don’t get me wrong – I was annoyed, frustrated, and disappointed. I didn’t ignore the situation. I mean we talked, and we did our due diligence to talk to the park authorities in order to increase our chances of finding this camera.

Nonetheless, and again surprisingly so, I was not upset with my students. The sad part is that reflecting upon this trip I was struck with the thought of my own children. Given the same circumstances, would I have reacted the same with my own children as I did with my students? The honest answer is no. For some reason it is way easier to be funnier, flexible and forgiving with others than with my own household. The reality, however, is that my program kids are not my permanent kids. My program kids are transient, and after they leave they too will be “lost kids” as far as my Club Beyond Naples program is concern. The only kids that will never ever be lost are my own kids, and in your case your own kids. I am not suggesting we need to be jerks with everyone, except our kids. Rather, let us be gracious and forgiving towards everybody we can, especially to those closest to us, our own family members. It would be very sad if every student remembers me as a good/fun guy, while my own kids only see a super busy guy who sits in front of his computer all day long at home. Yeah, that’s a pretty lame story. Let us run our programs with excellence and integrity. Our character and drive should not be displayed only “at work” but at life in general. Let us not lose those who are closest to us for the sake of others.

Obtaining your Sojourner Permit Italian law requires all foreign personnel working or living within Italy, other than an active-duty member under military orders, to obtain a Sojourner Permit within eight days of arrival in Italy. This is different from a visa, which is merely an approval for entry into the country. All applicants over 14 years of age must apply in person, as each person's signature is required at the time of application. NATIONALS OF ANY STATE OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY COMING TO ITALY DO NOT REQUIRE ANY VISA OR SOJOURNER PERMIT. As part of the Area Orientation process, the U.S. Region Legal Service Office (RLSO EURAFSWA) assists in the preparation and oversees the acquisition of the Sojourner Permit for all personnel attached to U.S. Navy commands in the Naples area. Army and Air Force personnel stationed at JFC must apply through the Carabiniere at the JFC Provost Marshall's Office, Building L. Contact Connie Henderson, RLSO EURAFSWA liaison advisor, at 081-568-4639 for more information.

They also said they hoped to learn some things from the military that could help them have a more productive season. “Last year we really struggled and one area we need to improve is how we play together as a team,” said Jackson-Cartwright. “Who better to learn teamwork from than the U.S. Navy?” The NSA Naples team consisted of service members and civilian contractors in the Naples area. The game gave community members an opportunity to test their abilities against a higher level of talent. “We have a group of guys here that get together a couple of days a week and play ball and compete against each other,” said Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Antonio Cobb, from the NSA Naples basketball team. “This was a great chance for us to come together as one team and test our talents against some very good competition.” Many members of the NSA Naples community were excited to see the how the game would go as well. “I have played basketball at the gym with and against a lot of the guys on the NSA Naples team and I was curious to see how some of these guys would compare against a college basketball team,” said Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Darrell Cave, assigned to Naval Branch Health Clinic Capodichino. “They played them much better than I thought they would and stayed competitive with them throughout the game.” The bleachers were full of fans and some people even stood along the wall to have an oppor-

tunity to watch the game. “It was great to see the community come out and cheer us on,” said Cobb. “We had fun playing against Penn and it looked like the crowd was enjoying the game too.” After the game was over many
players and coaches for Penn spoke of their gratitude for the opportunity to come out to Naples and meet and compete with members of the U.S. military. “It was an honor just to be able to come out here and test our skills against members of the U.S. Navy,” said JacksonCartwright. “It’s great for us to have this opportunity to come over here and play basketball with members of our military that share the same passion for the game that we do.” “I had a player from the Naples team tell me that he never had the opportunity to play ball in high school or college,” said Allen. “He said it was an honor to play against our team. It’s a huge honor for us to come out here and play basketball against these guys. However, to hear a member of the military tell me something like that, it’s truly humbling. It was a touching experiencing that I won’t soon forget.”
