Six million people make the pilgrimage to Munich every year for the original Oktoberfest, but U.S. and NATO service members and their families were given the opportunity to partake in a real Oktoberfest experience at Allied Joint Force Command (JFC) Naples, Sept. 19. Oktoberfest began in 1810 with the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig, later King Ludwig I, to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The people of Munich were invited to festivities held on the fields before the city gates to celebrate. Though it began in Munich, Oktoberfest events are now celebrated throughout Germany and the world, even as far away as Yokohama. This year marked the 12th annual JFC Naples Oktoberfest. “The reason [we hold] German Oktoberfest here in Naples is to promote German culture and tradition and to improve the relationship with the other partner nations within NATO and all the military personnel and their families and friends,” said Lt. Cmdr. Sven Kasimir, JFC Naples Public Affairs. “And the best way to get in contact and meet is to celebrate with drinks and food.” See OKTOBERFEST 2014 Page 5
