Super Bowl Participants to Troops: ‘You’re the Real Heroes’ By Army Sgt. 1st Class Tyrone C. Marshall Jr. DoD News, Defense Media Activity

With the National Football League’s all-star game in the rear-view mirror, anticipation for the league’s championship – the final pro football game of the year – begins. The Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots, the teams preparing to square off Feb. 1 in Super Bowl XLIX, shared their appreciation for U.S. service members serving overseas during media availabilities here yesterday. Pete Carroll, head coach of the defending champion Seahawks, assured troops the team understands the sacrifice they are making. “We want to make sure

that you understand that the Seahawks know the work that you’re doing,” he said. “We just want to be more like you guys -- we herald the work that you do and the attitude that you bring.

I know that the Super Bowl is really exciting to watch. It’s extremely exciting for us too, but if we could be a little bit more like you guys, we have a chance to win this thing.”

Carroll promised his team’s best effort. “So enjoy the heck out of it, and we’ll be thinking about you, and I hope you guys really enjoy the game,” he said.

Rich Ortloff, from Vista in North County San Diego, was selected as the Military Spouse of the Year in Naples, Italy as part of a worldwide competition put together by Armed Forces Insurance to highlight the many efforts of spouses in each branch of service. More than 1,600 nominations were submitted from 197 installations for this year’s competition. Voters went online and propelled Ortloff to be elected as the Naval Support Activity Naples’ winning entry. Ortloff has been a military spouse for 30 years and has a unique perspective on the changes that title has taken over time. “It was when the Navy recognized most of their publications like Wifeline and organizations like Wives Club in the 80's that changed to neutral gender and named most of them as ‘spouse,’” said Ortloff when asked about the Navy’s culture of change and modernization. “Now they are recognized as Familyline, spouses clubs, etc. That was a big positive step for the Navy, for me as a male spouse and a huge positive step for women in the Navy.” “Our wives were now looked at as equal professional Sailors and we their spouses were more welcomed into the equal spouse arena,” said Ortloff. “It helped bring more spouses together with so much to bring to the family readiness groups and other family events.” This will be Ortloff’s last duty station with his wife Fleet Master Chief of Naval Forces Europe-Africa JoAnne Ortloff, before her approaching retirement. He has kept himself very busy with a number of community organizations during his time stationed in Naples. Ortloff has been a cornerstone within the USO volunteer team, as well as a backbone of the Naples Chief Petty Officers Spouse Network.

BASE NOTES New Pedestrian Safety Policy on Capodichino

By Capt. Doug Carpenter NSA Naples Commanding Officer

NSA Naples will be conducting a force protection exercise, Reliant Pulcinella 2015, next week and I want everyone to be aware of the Security-focused training events. You will hear the Giant Voice speakers broadcasting simulated emergency messages, and you may see some activity at various places around the base. Make sure you follow the directions of any Security personnel and please don’t interfere with any evolutions. This training helps us to ensure our safety and security. Even though we’ll be in the exercise mode, we will still respond to real world events - if you See Something Suspicious, Say Something Immediately (our S5I campaign). That is something I encourage everyone to do at all times. We all have an important role in ensuring the safety of our community, so please stay alert. NSA Naples is constantly receiving important feedback from the community on the quality and effectiveness of our services. Your ICE comments and various ideas going up the chain of command help us to constantly improve our services. Some issues are easily resolved by getting the right information to the right people, while others may take some time or have legal ramifications. Our installation is here to serve the community and we’ll continue to do just that. Another great way to get your questions answered is by attending a Town Hall meeting. I hold these meetings about every quarter to share information with the community and to take questions. I’ll be holding my next Town Hall on Tuesday, Feb. 10. In case you weren’t aware, I also have an AFN radio show on Fridays from 7 to 8 a.m. Call-in questions are always welcome for the XO and I. We’ll answer them on air if possible. There are just too many ways to communicate here for anyone to feel like their voice isn’t being heard or that they don’t think they can get a problem resolved. Something that came up in the last Town Hall was the MWR pricing for pool and movie theater admission. The decision-making process is still ongoing, but we plan on getting word this year on price reductions across most of our MWR programs. This is great news and I’m happy with all the effort to get these improvements moving. I constantly hear about our various organizations, service members and their families volunteering their time around the base and in the local community. Thank you for being such great ambassadors for the U.S. Every month we donate goods, work at soup kitchens or organize projects to assist the local community. Naples High School has a great cultural exchange program and they’ve worked wonderfully with a number of Italian schools and the U.S. Consulate General in Naples. They’ve promoted numerous cross-cultural events to initiate dialogue between young Italians and Americans. On Tuesday, the two will be teaming up again with a special presentation by director Fred Kuwornu on his documentary film “Inside Buffalo,” about the 92nd Buffalo Soldiers Division. They were a segregated combat unit that fought during World War II in Italy. This should add value to the conversations we will have as a community as we enter Black History Month in February. Please enjoy the Super Bowl festivities, have a plan to arrive alive and be safe!

NSA Naples Safety has noted an increased hazard to pedestrians using the crosswalk after being dropped off at the bus stop near Capodichino's main gate. Public Works is exploring options to enhance pedestrian safety in this area. In the interim, vehicles are prohibited from passing the shuttle bus while it is stopped to pick up or drop off passengers. Pedestrians should exercise caution when crossing the street at this location. There is no policy change regarding stopped buses at any other bus stop locations. For additional information, contact David Peters at the NSA Safety Office at DSN 626-3147 or 081-568-3147.

POLICE RESCUE PUPPIES, ARREST PET TRAFFICKERS Italian police rescued 60 puppies of various breeds near Novara, in Northwestern Italy, not far from the Italian borders with Switzerland and France. A van from Slovakia was stopped by police after receiving a complaint from the Italian Movement for the Protection of Animals and Wolves. The puppies were packed into crates stacked one on top of the other and were destined for illegal sale. The animal organization said it suspected a Slovak and an Italian were involved in the illegal import and trafficking of dogs as well animal abuse and maltreatment. One week before the arrest of the Slovak, eight suspected pet traffickers were put under investigation for animal abuse. Forest rangers also seized animals from two dog breeders and a pet store near Udine, 25 miles from the Slovenian border, following a oneyear of investigation. Prosecutors said the suspects, a Slovak and an Italian, trafficked expensive purebred puppies into Italy from Eastern European countries.

NAVY HISTORY: USS MONITOR LAUNCHED

The USS Monitor (right) and CSS Virginia, in the first battle between two steam-powered armored warships on March 9, 1862, at Hampton Roads, shown here in a painting by J.O. Davidson. (From the collection of President Franklin D. Roosevelt)

By Gary Nichols NSA Naples Public Affairs

On Jan. 30, 1862, the first U.S. Navy ironclad warship, USS Monitor, was launched. Monitor was designed by Swedish-born engineer and inventor John Ericsson, and built by Continental Iron Works, of Brooklyn, N.Y. Monitor was a 987-ton warship, with a revolutionary design. She featured an unusually low profile, rising only 18 inches above the water, and sporting a flat iron deck with a 20foot cylindrical turret rising from the middle of the ship, which housed two 11inch Dahlgren guns. Monitor also had a draft of less than 11 feet, so she could operate freely in the protected shallow harbors and rivers of the South. Built in only three months, Monitor would become such an iconic ship that hundreds of ships were built using the same simple – but effective design – and were later re-

ferred to as “Monitors.” Not surprising, the Confederates had a different opinion of the new ironclad design and referred disparagingly to the “Monitors” as a “cheese-box on a raft.” In February 1862, Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles learned the Confederates were near to completing the conversion of the USS Merrimack – a 40gun steam-powered wooden frigate, which had been renamed CSS Virginia – to an ironclad at the naval shipyard in Norfolk, Va. Fearing what damage an ironclad could inflict, Monitor’s production schedule was stepped up. Welles surmised that a new ironclad warship could not only breach the blockade and destroy Union ships, but also inflict damage to coastal cities. A month later Monitor was commissioned, and was quickly pressed into service. Meanwhile, Virginia had been terrorizing the East Coast and pulver-

izing Union ships. On March 8, 1862, when Virginia steamed into Chesapeake Bay to finish off a grounded Union ship she had damaged the day earlier. She found Monitor standing guard near the vulnerable ship. The cannonballs, which would have punched through a wooden hull, simply bounced off the armor plating of each ship. After two hours, the attack was broken off, with each side claiming victory. In reality, it was a draw. Nevertheless, Monitor had prevented Virginia from gaining control of Hampton Roads, and preserved the Union blockade of the Hampton Road area. Thus ended the first battle between two steampowered armored warships, and it marked a turning point in naval history.

The combined multi-cultural heritage committee held an event at the Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples’ Capodichino base theater Jan. 27 to honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s accomplishments. “The MLK celebration event was put on because of his call to service. His leadership brought forward the civil rights acts of 1964,” said Intelligence Specialist 2nd Class Jarrett AndrewsSchiro, president of the combined multi-cultural heritage committee. “The marches and everything that he was involved with brought together the right

of getting rid of segregation in America and allowing us to have diversity.” The event began with excerpts from Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream Speech,” followed by a performance from the Naval Forces Europe Band, a speech from a guest speaker, a poem recited by a sailor attached to NSA Naples and closing remarks by the combined multi-cultural heritage committee vice president. “You had a small group of people that went against a majority even though we are a democratic society and our values most rely on the democratic system. SUPER BOWL from page 1 Players Express Appreciation Several players from both Super Bowl teams also joined in expressing their appreciation. Kam Chancellor, a strong safety for the defending champs, offered not only his thanks, but also the gratitude of the team’s fans, who have a moniker that reflects their contribution to the efforts of the 11 Seahawks who are on the field at any given time. “All the love from the Seahawks, [and] from the [12th man],” he said. “Kam Chancellor right here, man, wishing you the best.” K.J. Wright, a Seahawks linebacker, said the team plans to “come out there Sunday and put on a good performance for you guys. Stay safe out there.” His teammate, defensive end Cliff Avril, offered a “big” shoutout on behalf of the team and said the Seahawks hope to put on

ways right, that sometimes the majority can have it wrong,” said Kenneth Moore, the guest speaker at the event. “I think it’s important to remember that everyone has a voice and that anyone can be wrong. It’s about the morality and the love and the respect for each other that enables us to decide what should be changed and what should not.” Martin Luther King Jr. was an American pastor and a civil rights activist in the 1950s and 1960s who led nonviolent protests to fight for equal rights and the desegregation of America. King also received a Noble Peace Prize for his efforts to end racial inequality through nonviolence. “Martin Luther King Jr.’s dedication to his beliefs and our civil rights continues to provide an opening for equal opportunity not only for the African-American race, but for all races across the world,” said Personnel Specialist 2nd Class Taisha Littles. ENERGY CONSERVATION Taking the next step From the NSA Naples Energy Management Team

There are a variety of low-cost and no-cost methods to conserve energy and home but what about those of us who are ready to take energy savings to a whole new level? The installation of programmable thermostats, energy efficient windows and conducting home audits were merely baby steps. You now may be ready to consider incorporating clean energy into your home energysaving strategy. The installation of a solar panel system may be just right for your home. With advancements in technology and the expansion of the solar industry, prices for solar panels have fallen dramatically. A wind turbine system is a great option if you live on at least one acre of land and experience strong winds in your area. Be sure to coordinate with the zoning requirements for your city/town. Wind turbine systems and reduce energy cost by as much as 90 percent. Small hydropower systems are beneficial to those who have a source of flowing water on their property. Often, a 10-kilowatt microhydropower system can provide enough power for a large home, small resort or a small farm. As with the energy options, please verify zoning requirements and acquire any necessary permits prior to beginning installation. Energy conservation at home is a continuous home improvement project. There are a series of options available and they are becoming more affordable. Someone is always working on the “next big way” to reduce usage and push towards a more energy secure future. We should strive to assist accomplishing that goal by doing our part through renovation at home. Where the Snow Falls in Southern Italy Story/Photos by MCC Travis Simmons NSA Naples Public Affairs

A sponsor recently told a new arrival that it never snows in Naples. Two days later, temperatures plummeted and flurries fell for part of the night. It may have been less than an inch for most of Naples, but it was a big deal for everyone who normally only see snow atop the distant hills or on the ever-present Mount

Vesuvius. This rarity was fun for most, but a surefire way to see snow is to head to the largest ski resort in Southern Italy. Roccaraso and other connected ski resorts are 150 kilometers northeast from Naples and roughly a two-hour drive from Gricignano di Aversa. Located in the region of Abruzzo, the Roccaraso ski area has been open for more than 100 years. With a peak

of just over 7,000 feet, it provides some impressive views and some long trails to get you back down to the base, which has an elevation around 4,000 feet. The mountains mostly consist of a base of man-made snow to begin and end the season. If there hasn’t been recent snow, you can expect to go down some packed and groomed snow – which isn’t the Swiss Alps, but it’s better than nothing. There are 23 lifts and 72 trails with more than 2/3 of them currently open. A few of those lifts are drag lifts and two are cable cars. It may take you a minute to build up the nerve to use the drag lift, but they open up a few additional trails if you make the commitment. If you’re a snowboarder, it’s a bit harder than just sitting back on the small disc and letting the cable pull you up with your skis helping guide you. A small distraction can result in a snowboard taking a detour with the rider being drug

up the mountain face first stay focused. Café and food bars can be found littered all over the mountain near many of the ski lifts. Lamp heated dishes of pasta, sausages and greens can be found or you could just go with the normal bar snacks. There are plenty of espresso machines everywhere, as well as a small variety of beer and bottles with contents able to give that extra level of warmth for your insides. Roccaraso has 40 percent of its trails for beginners, 40 percent marked for intermediate and the last 20 percent are black circles, which are considered for experts. These have steeper sections and trees closer to the edges of the trail, so know how to control your velocity before pointing yourself down one. The black circle trails can be a rewarding ride with more fresh snow to carve through since not as many people throw themselves down these trails. For the out of the ordinary experience, call up the few businesses that allow you to go snow-kiting or heli-skiing. Their availability depends on mountain and weather conditions, but could make a pretty interesting day trip for those

7

needing to take it to the next level. There are lessons available for the kids and even a section with conveyer belts and intertubes to slide down a gentle hill over and over and over again. Basically, there’s something for everyone. MWR’s Navy Outdoor Recreation facility, located on the Support Site of Naval Support Activity Naples, offers bus transportation every weekend of the ski season. Even though they advertise a three-hour return trip, as long as everyone makes it back to the bus on time and there’s no traffic, it can easily be a two-hour return ride. The bus is a great option for when the mountains get a decent amount of snowfall and you’re not sure if your Naples beater car can make the last couple of hills (at least without snow chains in the trunk). The on-base shop has skis, snowboards, helmets and sleds all available to rent. You can take advantage of their decent prices, even if you’re going your own way and not taking the bus. Give the Navy Outdoor Recreation center a call at 081811-4947 and start planning your next trip.

Naples High School Wrestles to Raise Cancer Awareness From Naples High School

Wrestling teams across Italy converged on the Naples High School gymnasium Jan. 24, 2015, to participate in the fifth meet of the season and the final home wrestling tournament of the regular season at Naples. A few years ago the football team decided to show their support for cancer awareness by wearing pink socks. The wrestlers liked the idea so much they began to hold a yearly tournament to raise money for cancer research. Naples Head Coach Vito Vitulli knows personally how breast cancer affects women and their families. “My grandmother, aunt, and sister lost the fight to breast cancer,” Vitulli said. He wanted to use his position as coach of the Wildcat Wrestling Team to promote citizenship for a good cause. The team decided to sell t-shirts and sweatshirts to raise money to find a cure. Freshman and 113 pound varsity wrestler, Seamus Wade, had his own experience with cancer as well. At age four, he was diagnosed with Stage Four Burkitt’s Lymphoma and Stage Four ALL Leukemia. He successfully underwent four months of high dose chemotherapy and has been cancer free since. Wade was fortunate to participate in clinical trials through St. Jude’s Research Hospital. “Our team came together to support a great cause,” Seamus said. “It makes me feel Seamus Wade, of Naples Middle High School, good to give back to those in works hard to pin his opponent. Wade took first in need.” the 113 pound weight class Jan. 24, 2015. He will never forget the expe- Photo by Teresa Spatt rience that cancer had on his life. He was fortunate to meet so many kids going through similar treatment. Unfortunately a number of them eventually lost their battle with cancer. Trevor Held, a former wrestler and student at Naples High School, has a sister, Lilian, who was diagnosed with cancer last spring. She was medevacuated back to the states to be treated. The entire family returned to the United States to ensure that Lilian receives the best treatment. The team thinks of his family often and wishes her continued success with her fight against cancer. Principal Duane Werner was pleased that the team decided to give back to those in need. “This event was a great time to put the emphasis on finding a cure for cancer,” Werner said. “With one of our own students being a cancer survivor this brings the message close to home. RICH ORTLOFF from page 1 “So much has happened in the last 28 months here; it's been awesome,” said Ortloff. “From volunteering with the USO, Naples Overseas Support Club, Americans Working Around the Globe and more, to enjoying the rich history of the land Support Site was built on and the hidden treasures of Capua amphitheater; I can never get tired of visiting the sacred grounds that Spartacus trained and fought on.” “Most importantly, I've met so many new friends here that have made me smarter, especially my fellow Spouses in the Naples CPO Spouse Network group,” said Ortloff. Candidates for the 2015 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year represent more than 170 bases and all 9 Coast Guard districts. "America's military and their families have been at the ready over the past 13 years we have been at war,” said Kate Dolack, editor-in-chief of Military Spouse magazine. “The military spouses who have maintained the home front during deployments and training missions have accomplished remarkable feats. They have supported not only our military but added to the strength of the nation." “Now, perhaps more than ever, it is important to recognize those standout spouses from all branches and at every installation and honor them for their achievements,” said Dolack. Some of Ortloff’s best experiences have been traveling with other spouses to meet their Sailors in foreign ports during deployments. He has been able to meet dignitaries, government officials, U.S. Navy attaché’s and spouses from those countries, all while taking in the local

culture and getting to know more about the spouses he traveled with. “I encourage spouses and families to travel and meet your military member in foreign ports and see the world,” said Ortloff. He retired in 2003 after serving 31 ½ years as a firefighter in the Federal Fire Department. Over the years, he volunteered as the Ombudsman during a tour on San Clemente Island, joined the Family Support Group for USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) and was part of the Triad Leadership Team with USS Milius (DDG 69). “I love to support those who support us, and the sincere thanks that they give is an unforgettable display of gratitude,” said Ortloff. “I will miss the troops and the friendships.” He has been previously recognized as the 2008 USO Volunteer of the Year for the Pacific and the USO Naples Volunteer of the QuarterWinter 2015. “I would like to show everyone, military and civilian, that spouses are such a pivotal part of a military career and its future,” said Ortloff. “We are as different as spouses, as husbands and wives, as our military members are different in their rate, MOS or specialties, and we bring to the table a point of view and support that is often behind the scenes, yet unforgettable.” Rich Ortloff and his wife will be returning to California this year to spend retirement near family. The overall winner and 2015 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year will be revealed May 8 at a VIP ceremony in Washington, D.C. What Is Groundhog Day? From the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

Every February 2, thousands of people gather at Gobbler’s Knob, in Punxsutawney, Pa., to see if a groundhog will or will not see his shadow when he emerges from his den. Burrowed inside his heated simulated tree trunk, a groundhog, named Punxsutawney Phil is about to step into the limelight at about 7:25 a.m. once again. The gates open at 3 a.m., followed by live entertainment, music, and a pre-dawn fireworks display that helps to ignite the crowd gathered in anticipation of Phil’s forecast. The awe-inspiring fireworks are set to lively music, which is just what the crowd generally needs on a cold rural Pennsylvania morning. Phil makes the most celebrated weather forecast of the year, usually around the crack of dawn. Has spring sprung when Phil emerges from his burrow and doesn’t see his shadow? Or, should he scurry back into his burrow for six more weeks of winter weather if skies are clear and fair?

History of Groundhog Day Groundhog Day has its origins in an ancient celebration of a point midway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Superstition has it that fair weather was a forbearance of a stormy and cold second half to winter. The early Christians in Europe established the custom of Candlemas Day, when the clergy would bless candles and people would light them in each window of their homes to ward off the darkness of mid-winter. But the legend of the February 2 forecast also persisted, as captured in this old English saying: If Candlemas be fair and bright, Winter has another flight. If Candlemas brings clouds and rain, Winter will not come again. The trail of groundhog history actually leads back to Clymer H. Freas, city editor of the Punxsutawney Spirit newspaper. In 1887, he was inspired by a group of local hunters and gourmets who held a groundhog hunt fol-

lowed by a picnic barbecue of, well, you know, groundhog. Freas thought it so much fun that he wrote up the group as the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club and went on to promote the Punxsutawney Groundhog as the official weather forecaster. As he embellished the story year after year, other newspapers picked it up and soon everyone looked to Punxsutawney Phil for the critical prediction of when spring would return to the nation. Remember, if Phil sees his shadow, it means six more weeks of winter; if he does not see his shadow, it will be an early spring. What is your weather prediction for 2015?

Geocachers search high, and low for clues and caches which lead them to their next destination. (Photo by Caitlyn Knapp, MWR Carney Park)

From MWR

In hopes of getting families active with a fun and exciting new activity, the MWR Navy Outdoor Recreation program hosted a Geocaching Tournament at Carney Park Jan. 24. Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity, in which participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called “geocaches” or “caches,” anywhere in the world. Twenty-five participants found hidden “caches” throughout the park and golf course while collecting clues along the way. Once all clues were found, teams had to decode a Geocaching phrase with the fastest group being crowned

Geocaching Champion. “Whether a muggle or a wizard, geocaching is a great way for friends and families to get together and enjoy a beautiful day in Carney Park,” said Geocaching expert/Carney Park employee Caitlyn Knapp. “This was the first time many people had geocached, and many said they would do it again. Geocaching is a growing activity. There are more than 2.5 million geocaches around the world. “Geocaching is one of those activities where it turns out to be a great fitness activity through walking/running around,” Knapp said. “But it doesn't really feel like a workout.” A special congratulations to the McMonigle family who brought home the winning trophy for their team “Channel 4 News Team.”
