The head pizzaiolo for the festival was fourthgeneration pizza maker Attilio Albachiara, owner of Pizzeria Albachiara. He has been making pizza for more than 30 years, has competed in pizza competitions in the U.S. four times and

runs a pizza-making school.

“I was born in a pizzeria,” Albachiara said in jest. “I have always been in love with pizza. I am proud to have made pizza in America, and I am proud to cook pizza for Americans.”

The company Forni Medaglia, which has been in business for 250 years, provided the two traditional pizza ovens.

We’ve had a pretty eventful week here in Naples. Thanks to Armed Forces Entertainment and Naples MWR for bringing in Mark Wills and his band for an amazing concert Tuesday night.

Thanks to all of our family program directors and local Ombudsmen for hosting the CNO’s two Ombudsmen at Large, who toured our facilities this week for a face-to-face view of NSA Naples and our quality of life programs. The Ombudsman at Large program is critical to provide a communication channel directly from our Ombudsmen, Sailors and their families straight to the CNO. They are our families’ advocates, and their visit demonstrates the commitment our senior leadership has to our Sailors and families.

Tonight is Spooktacular and I know a lot of parents and kids are eager to get those costumes on. With on-base trick or treating and Spooktacular happening the same night, there should be no lack for candy. Child and Youth Programs, with the support of many other organizations, have done an incredible job putting this event together. In addition, I wish to express my deep thanks to the countless volunteers who work together to make this a fun night.

Whether it’s story tellers on the hayride, those working in the trick or treating booths, or the many, many food vendors; they have earned our appreciation. Finally, I want to give a big shout out to the Seabees who created a certifiably spooky haunted house for all to enjoy. They’ve been operating the house of scream since Wednesday and have some special scares saved up for the finale tonight. If you have small children, let the Seabee at the entrance know and they will tone down the actors so everyone can enjoy the night.

The event starts tonight at 6 p.m. Trick or treating within Housing will end at 9 p.m., and residents should be set up outside the apartments for the safety of our kids and to be courteous to our neighbors. Spooktacular will go until 10 p.m. to include the games, music, movies, maze, and contests. There’s something for everyone.

In anticipation of the holidays, we are wrapping up the Fall/Winter Safety Stand Down cycle for our service members, civilians, and Italian employees. After looking over the training and introducing our dedicated Safety team, I want to stress the importance of everything they are sharing as the weather begins to change and we enter the travel and holiday season. Traffic safety applies to all vehicles, but there are extra considerations on motorcycles, scooters, bicycles and skateboards. Along with an increase in DUI’s, motorcycle safety had a negative impact on our community last year. In general, if you’re driving a vehicle, follow the speed limits, don’t drink, put the cellphone down, and pay attention to signs of fatigue. Recreational activities took some of our Sailors away from the workforce as well, so take a moment to think about safety with each and every activity. Stretch out a bit before playing sports or working out and always wear the appropriate protective equipment.

The fall weather means football season is about to get interesting. Get out and enjoy all that Italy and Europe have to offer, but be safe.

Reminder: Uniform Wear Off Base Limited The current force protection policy curtails the wear of uniforms by service members off military installations. Service members shall not wear uniforms while using public transportation or get out of their personal vehicle while traveling in uniform to and from work. The base shuttle bus is not considered public transportation. Military PT uniforms are also not authorized for use off base.

Air Conditioning Shutoff Schedule The A/C shutoff schedule is below for Support Site housing.

This procedure does not require entry to any units, and families will not be disturbed during the process. Please note that due to the design in the equipment, the heat may not available for 24 to 48 hours after the A/C is turned off. If the heat is not working 48 hours after A/C turn-off, please contact the Housing trouble desk at 629-4285/86 or 081-8114285/86 for assistance.

Doug Carpenter, commanding officer of NSA Naples, on Tuesday, Nov. 18. The Town Hall is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Support Site movie theater to discuss the conversion of these buildings to Unaccompanied Housing. The conversion will allow for increased quality of life opportunities for the single Sailors currently residing in the Capodichino barracks. The timeline of building conversions and the current resident’s relocation options will be discussed at the Town Hall. RSVP by Nov. 13 to Lt. Support Site Post Office Point-of-Sale Computer Down Due to a failure with the primary Point-of-Sale computer, the Support Site post office is unable to conduct walk-in transactions requiring the sale of stamps, money orders and insurance. The system is expected to be repaired by Nov. 4.

Community members can register online at www.USPS.com for the Click and Ship service by selecting the ‘Click.Print.Ship.’ tab. Customers can pay for and print postage on the USPS site for flat rate boxes at home and then bring them in. If the member cannot utilize a flat rate box, then the post office can weigh the parcel and that weight can be used to generate postage from the Click and Ship computer in the post office. Customers are welcome to use the Click and Ship computer in the post office if unable to print from home. If there are any questions, please contact the Support Site post office at DSN 629-4335.

Flu Vaccines Available at U.S. Naval Hospital Naples Department of Defense ID card holders and their families can stop by the Immunization Clinic on the 1st Floor of U.S. Naval Hospital Naples at Support Site to get their free fl u vaccination. The clinic is open Monday to Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursdays from 7:30 to 11:45 a.m. and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please call Preventive Medicine at DSN 629-6299 or 081-811-6299 if you have any questions.

Lost and Found at NSA Naples Security operates the lost and found program for Naval Support Activity Naples. Items found on base should be turned into either the Capodichino or Support Site Security precinct. Items turned into the NEX or Commissary will be turned over to Security each week, so check with each if you know you just recently lost an item there. Contact Capodichino at DSN 626-5488 or the Support Site Precinct at DSN 629-4262 to see if your item has been turned in. A log is maintained for each precinct and individuals turning in items should ensure they receive a receipt from Security.

Restrictions on Hand Carrying Medical Records U.S. Naval Hospital Naples will implement the restriction on hand carrying patient medical records on Saturday, Nov. 1. The Department of Defense Instruction 6040.43 restricts the practice though some exceptions may apply, specifically for active-duty service members. The Medical Records division can provide one copy their medical records to sponsors and their dependents prior to a Permanent Change of Station (PCS), if requested. Oct. 31: Trick or Treating on Support Site Trick or Treating will be held for Support Site Housing members from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31. For participating residents handing out candy, please set up outside the doors of your building to help ensure the safety of the children, as well as limit the noise in the stairwells for residents who do not wish to participate.

Oct. 31: Spooktacular at the Support Site Central Park Spooktacular will be held at the Support Site Central Park from 6 to 10 p.m. for children and adults. Trick or Treating will be open to youth under 16 years old. There will also be a hayride, maze, food sales, music, haunted house, food vendors, contests and a professional photographer for a fee. The base Security policy applies for sponsoring guests for the event and patrons sponsoring guests must obtain a pass at the Housing office parking lot from 4 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 31.

USO Hosts 'Farewell to Summer' BBQ Around 100 area single and unaccompanied service members came out to the MWR Liberty Center for USO Farewell to Summer BBQ Oct. 23. While waiting for their burgers and bratwursts to cook to perfection, Sailors enjoyed homemade pasta dishes, mixed greens, sides and desserts. The evening continued with a challenging pop culture/sports trivia session that saw 5 teams battle to win USO movie packages and branded merchandise.

Retired Master Chief yeoman (ss) Jaudon davis, a tennessee native and longtime resident of naples, passed away Oct. 22 in Castel Volturno, Italy at the age of 77. davis enlisted in the navy in 1955. he served aboard the ships Uss Sea Cat (ss-399), Uss Theodore Roosevelt (ssBn-600), and Uss Sea Devil (ss-664). his shore tours included being a part of submarine squadron Four in Key West, submarine Flotilla eight in naples and naval striking and support Forces southern europe in naples. after retirement from the navy, davis worked as a Member services Rep/Loan Counselor at the navy Federal Credit Union in naples and volunteer for the local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. davis retired a second time in 2004. he is survived by his wife Rita. an inter-family service was held Oct. 23 at the family’s home. American Red Cross Fire Safety Tips

Albachiara and his co-workers served hundreds of people. With an efficiency that comes from years of experience they kneaded dough and added sauce and toppings before they passed it off to cook in the furno.

The atmosphere was festive.

Children played in the courtyard while enjoying authentic Neapolitan pizza. The Hallelujah Full Gospel service provided music for the festival.

Rachel Cornette, a Navy veteran and spouse, has been to all the pizza festivals at the Support Site and says that in her opinion this year was the best.

“I think this is fantastic,” said Cornette. “They are moving really fast this year. I only had to wait in line for 10 minutes.”

Cornette also expressed gratitude to the WRA. “This is representative of the Italian culture; especially with the whole tradition of sitting down and having

The biggest disaster threat to families across our nation every day isn’t floods or hurricanes; it’s fire. Last year, the Naples American Red Cross Disaster Action Team responded to 0 fires in the Naples American military community.

Nationally, the Red Cross responds to thousands of local fires, on average, each year.

History has taught us that the incidence of home fires generally increase during the fall and winter months, and most commonly occur on Saturdays and Sundays in the early evening.

During Fire Prevention Month, the American Red Cross is urging residents of the Naples American military community to take some simple steps to help minimize the risk for this type of devastating disaster: • Install smoke alarms on every level of their home, inside bedrooms and outside of sleeping areas; check them monthly by pressing the test button.

• Create a fire escape plan identifying two escape routes from every room of your home and designate a meeting place a short distance from the home where family members can meet should they be separated during a fire.

• Practice your escape plan at least twice a year, paying particular attention to children or older adults who may require extra time and care.

Annual Zombie Fun 5K Run Held at Carney Park Story and photos by MC2 Jared King

Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples hosted a five kilometer (5K) Zombie Fun Run at Carney Park Oct. 25.

Thirty four volunteer “zombies” stalked the course, while many more contributed their skills as make-up artists for the zombie costumes.

The runners dodged zombies and overcame obstacles while guarding three lifelines (flags) attached to a flag belt around their waists.

“The event was a lot of fun and everybody had a good time,” said Andrew Turner, a zombie volunteer. “The best part about volunteering is giving back to the community.

Working together with the other volunteers is just a great overall way to spend my Saturday.”

The run participants received a Zombie Run T-shirt and a “Survivor” or “Infected” participation medal. A runner had to finish the run with at least one lifeline to receive the “Survivor” participation medal, but it proved a difficult task for many of the runners.

“My favorite part of the race was near the end when I was stuck at the entrance to the playground and I didn’t know what to do when several zombies blocked my path,” said Keylee Soto, an “Infected” runner. “I had the misfortune of having my last flag pulled off at the playground, but it was hilarious watching everyone go crazy while attempting to run away from all of the zombies.”

Mercedes Umphress, MWR’s sports and fitness coordinator, organized this year’s event, which provided the runners with a spread out obstacle course increasing the amount of cardio.

“This isn’t just fitness with the children or families,” said

There were zombie free zones for safety that allowed runners to cool down during the run and also zombies were instructed not to chase the runners past certain points due to debris or uneven grounds.

“Safety is our number one factor and I really hope everyone had a great time,” said Umphress. “I just feel great that this event was a success and we continually make this event better every year because my goal is to make sure that our participation keeps growing and more people want to come out.”

Just remember, for those participants who finished the second annual Zombie Fun Run “infected” there is always next year.

Take Charge in the Fight Against Breast Cancer

According the American Cancer Society, 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. A woman’s risk doubles if she has a first-degree relative (mother, sister, or daughter) who has been diagnosed with breast cancer and 15 percent of women who get breast cancer have a family history of the disease.

As important as family history is, the statistics imply that 85 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer will have no family history of the disease.

What can women do to fight these odds? Be proactive!

First, start with regular breast self-exams. It is important to become familiar with the way your breasts normally look and feel. Knowing what is normal for you may help to identify even small changes in your breasts. Second, in addition to self-exams, have your primary care provider perform an annual clinical breast exam. And finally, get a screening mammogram. Routine screening mammography recommendations vary between professional organizations.

The American College of Radiology, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Cancer Society recommend screening mammography and clinical breast exams every year starting at the age of 40. Alternatively, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and American Academy of Family Physicians recommend biennial (once every two years) screening mammography between the ages of 50 and 74. Both organizations also recommend that the decision to conduct screening mammography before age 50 should be individualized.

At U.S. Naval Hospital Naples, our guidelines for scheduling a mammography appointment have recently changed.

Previously, patients always needed to schedule an appointment with their Primary Care Manager (PCM) every year and have an order placed for a mammogram. Now, as long as you have previously had a mammogram, you are eligible for self-referral and can call the Radiology Department to schedule your mammogram directly. If you have any breast concerns, such as pain or feeling a lump, you must be seen by your PCM before the mammogram and cannot self-refer.

Screening mammography is the key to early detection and is effective in finding cancers that cannot yet be detected by physical exams. Despite advancements in technology, mammography can miss some types of breast cancer, especially those in a very early stage. Early breast cancers can only be seen when the radiologist compares the current mammogram to previous exams. That’s why it is important for patients to hand-carry their mammograms and the reason the mammography technologist will always ask for previous films.

Many first-time mammogram patients ask, “Is it going to hurt?”

The truth is that there is no definitive answer, as every woman is different, and each patient has certain fears and doubts about the procedure. The exam may be slightly uncomfortable, but it should not be painful. As you are having your exam, remember that the mammography technologist is there to comfort you and answer any questions you may have.

Although breast cancer rates in men are significantly lower than in women, male breast cancer does exist. According to the American Cancer Society, about 2,360 cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed this year in males and about 430 men will die as a result. Since male breast cancer is relatively uncommon, most men ignore the signs, which are similar to those of breast cancer in women. The lack of awareness commonly leads men to ignore breast lumps and attribute them to an infection or some other cause. While most male breast lumps are diagnosed as gynecomastia, a benign enlargement of breast tissue, males with any breast changes should make an appointment with their PCM. Just as with women, early detection improves the chances that the breast cancer can be treated successfully.

Most facilities, including the Mammography Unit at USNH Naples, are digital. What does that mean for the patient?

1) Lower doses of radiation exposure; 2) Ease of transfer of mammogram images onto a disc for patients to take to referral appointments or the next duty station; 3) Better overall pictures for the radiologists to read.

The hospital’s mammography program has met stringent quality guidelines and has been certified by both the American College of Radiology and the FDA. The Navy's Office of Women's Policy, OPNAV N134W, is currently accepting nominations for the 2015 Capt. Joy Bright Hancock and Master Chief Anna Der-Vartanian Leadership Awards.

Presented annually, the Capt. Joy Bright Hancock and Master Chief Anna Der-Vartanian Leadership Awards recognize and honor the inspirational and visionary leadership of Navy servicemembers whose ideals and dedication foster a positive working environment, while reinforcing and furthering the integration of women into the Navy.

Nominations are broken into five categories: senior officer (O4 and senior); junior officer (O1-O3); senior enlisted (E7-E9); junior enlisted (E5-E6); and a new category to recognize Limited Duty officers (O1O3) and Warrant Officers (W2-W5), who were previously grouped into the junior officer category.

One award winner will be chosen for each category. Nominees should be mature leaders who have shown exceptional leadership over time and have persevered to overcome challenges while serving.

Nominees should have demonstrated inspirational, innovative, and imaginative leadership, both on and off-duty, as well as professional accomplishments and community involvement.

Candidates must be nominated by their commanding officer or officer in charge and receive an endorsement from the command's immediate superior in command. Nominations are open to both active and Reserve servicemembers.

Local youth Qualifies for National bible bee From The Shelby Kennedy Foundation

Charis Jacobson headed to Orlando, Florida to compete in the 2014 National Bible Bee Oct. 29 through Nov. 1 after securing one of the 360 top scores from across the country during the Local Bible Bee Contest held Aug. 23.

Jacobson is the daughter of Ted and Beverly and a member of Il Faro International Baptist Church.

She memorized 24 Bible passages and studied the Bible’s book of Jonah over the summer. She now has another 601 verses and the book of Nahum to study for the National Contest.

During the National Contest, the 360 National Qualifiers will demonstrate their diligence in Scripture knowledge and memorization through oral and written rounds. The top winners receive a share of more than $280,000 in awards and prizes, and every contestant will be encouraged and recognized for their Biblical excellence.

The National Contest is surrounded by a familyfriendly atmosphere and activities, including daily prayer gatherings, inspiring speaker sessions, and a fun “Friday Night Party Night” that includes a full concert from the GLAD, a cappella group.

The foundation’s chief executive officer, Mark McMahan, emphasized that everyone is welcome to attend, whether they have been previously involved in the Bible Bee or not.

“This event is designed to be family-friendly, engaging and encouraging for everyone,” says McMahan. “Those who attended last year’s Nationals were deeply impacted by the celebration of God’s word and the sense of community among the families, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We anticipate the same and more for this year’s event.”

Many families may also be inspired and challenged by the onstage semi-final rounds, in which the top National Contestants engage in a word-perfect, single-elimination Bible Memory contest, as well as the final challenge rounds, in which the advancing contestants gain points

Navy Harvests Weapon Systems for Coast Guard Use

Engineers at Naval Ship Systems Engineering Station (NAVSSES), Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division are harvesting weapon system components from decommissioned U.S. Navy frigates (FFGs) for re-use on Coast Guard cutters.

The harvesting of components from four decommissioned frigates will result in more than $24 million in cost avoidance, with more expected from a fifth ship. The Navy's leveraging of decommissioned ships' assets shows a judicious use of resources and collaboration between services.

"The Navy's FFGs will all be decommissioned by the end of fiscal year 2015, but the Coast Guard cutters have the same gun weapons systems," said Abe Boughner, with Auxiliary Ships/Acquisition Support Branch at NAVSSES. The equipment includes MK 75, 76mm/62 caliber gun mounts, as well as gun control panels, barrels, launchers, junction boxes and other components. The Coast Guard can use all of this equipment on cutters during the course of the ships' expected service life, which spans into the 2030s.

The harvesting effort began in Dec. 2012 when Roger Raber of Naval Sea System Command's Surface Warfare Readiness Directorate proposed a plan to harvest equipment from five decommissioned FFGs docked at the Navy's inactive ship maintenance facility in Philadelphia. Raber coordinated with NAVSSES engineers E. Alan Karpovitch, the Navy's propulsion

program manager, and Ashley Ferguson, mechanical engineer, to oversee the daily operations of removing items from the frigates. The Coast Guard also provided a team to assist with removal of components from the FFGs. "If I get a request for a part and it's feasible for me to pull it off a ship, I will," said Karpovitch.

"Many of the pieces of hardware on these ships are still serviceable and can be recycled."

Timothy Wallace, equipment specialist with the Coast Guard Surface Forces Logistics Center (SFLC), provided a logistics asset request for the gun mounts in early fiscal year 2013. The gun mounts were deemed serviceable and a plan was enacted to remove them from the frigates. The SFLC worked in conjunction with Stephen Remsey, the Navy's MK 75 In-Service Engineering Agent, to coordinate the transportation of the gun mounts to U.S. Coast Guard's Curtis Bay Yard in Baltimore, Maryland.

"From the Coast Guard's standpoint the FFG harvesting has been a complete success," said Wallace.

"The final cost avoidance figure will not be known until harvesting of the fifth FFG is complete."

Some of the MK 75 mounts will be placed into the overhaul cycle at the Coast Guard Yard Ordnance Shop and returned to service onboard Famous Class cutters. One mount is slated to support the Coast Guard's sustainment program for parts no longer manufactured or in short supply. Other components will also be placed in the overhaul cycle for later return to service.

"This is the right thing to do," said Raber. "I sleep well knowing that

we are outfitting the cutters with reliable equipment that is vital to their mission."

The Surface Warfare Directorate maintains more than 50 inactive ships for future disposal, donation, or transfer. It also provides followon technical support to more than 150 active ships in more than 50 partner navies and the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Ship Systems Engineering Station, Philadelphia is a major component of Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division. It is the Navy's principal test and evaluation station and in-service engineering agent for all hull, mechanical and electrical ship systems and equipment and has the capability to test and engineer the full range of shipboard systems and equipment from full-scale propulsion systems to digital controls and electric power systems.

In the Spotlight CAPT CURTIS WERKING Capt. Curtis Werking is a board certified prosthodontist and member of the U.S. Naval Hospital Naples Dental directorate. He graduated from the University Of Colorado School Of Dentistry and immediately reported to active duty in 1991. Werking has served in a wide variety of diverse duty locations over the past 23 years including two tours in San Diego, Monterey, CA, out-service residency training in San Antonio, as well as his first overseas tour in Okinawa, Japan. He reported to Naples in 2013 after a lengthy tour as the Prosthodontic Residency Program Director at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, Md. As the command’s only prosthodontist, Werking specializes in the replacement of missing teeth with dental implants and other fixed and removable prosthetics. He also oversees the extensive Dental laboratory within the directorate, ensuring high quality care for our military community. In his free time, Werking enjoys traveling in Italy and Europe with his wife and two boys.

ANTONIO MOSCA You may have noticed at the Commissary an employee named Antonio Mosca. If you don't know him yet, you’ve certainly admired his work in the decorative special offers drawn on dry boards displayed throughout the store.

Behind all that, it is a passion for art that Mosca developed long ago in elementary school. Ever since he has sketched and drawn everything falling into his hands or fantasy.

Mosca has worked in Naples since the age of seven trying to do the best by balancing, his education which was interrupted at the age of 16 when his family moved to England. He returned to Italy to serve in the national service in the air force. His dream was quickly curtailed by the requirement of having a high school degree which he did not have. Rather than feeling down and accepting his bad luck, Mosca chose to finish his studies during evening classes along with others who had the same dream postponed due to World War II and its after-math.

He is the only artist in his family but lately it appears his young grandson picked up the talent and will bring some competition into the game.

Mosca's skills are greatly appreciated by keen customers whose comments and admiration are the most rewarding part of his work. He never put a price on his art but instead gladly responds to special requests because he believes that money transforms both the expectations of the customer and his own joy of expressing a free style that is not necessarily perfect, but personal.

How Do You Keep Your Relationship Respectful, Safe and Positive?

I like to think of my relationship like an emotional bank account. If my relationship has more withdrawals than deposits I know I’m in danger of relationship bankruptcy.

My wife and I work to be consistent and deliberate about making time for dates and activities so that we can make those regular deposits to maintain relationship health. Like anything a healthy relationship comes with time and effort.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, and this year’s CNIC theme is Relationships should be Respectful, Safe and Positive. In 2013, 9,000 of the 18,000 incidents reported to Family Advocacy Programs met DoD criteria for domestic abuse or intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is essentially the imbalance of power and control in a relationship, in which one intimate partner purposefully threatens, intimidates, physically or sexually assaults another and can lead to long-term effects of low self-esteem, trauma, physical injury and even death. In an eight-year review of homicides in the Navy, 54% were related to domestic violence. This year’s theme asks active duty, civilians and their families to think about how they keep their relationships violence-free by showing respect, safety and overall positive attitude in their relationships and families.

There are several resources on our base to help keep Naples DoD families healthy and strong. We are offering a Couples Communication 101 class to support couples that want to improve their communication skills, build connection and learn how to handle conflict in a respectful and loving way. Also, Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) offers financial counseling and marital counseling for couples that may need a specific type of support to help keep their relationships healthy. This year on AFN radio we announced a challenge, with the support of NSA leadership, for commands to tell us how they keep their relationships respectful, safe and positive. Thank you to all who participated and supported the effort to keep our community violence free. We called it the Domestic Violence Awareness Purple Ribbon Challenge and here is what commands across our Naples installation had to say:

1. Never let the sun set on anger or an argument. Ie; deal with the issue at hand directly, and move forward from there together.

2. Never allow arguments to get "personal", no insults or bringing up things that hurt instead of solve.

3. ALWAYS remember that your relationship is a living, breathing thing. It requires love, patience, time and care in order to survive and thrive.

4. And lastly, before things ever get too heated, count to 10 and compose yourself. If needed, take a step back (figuratively or even literally).

Safe: We create emotional safety through building and maintaining trust in each other by letting each other know where we're going and how long we'll be gone, we don't dismiss or belittle each other's feelings.

Positive: We make each other's interests a priority and encourage each other to grow as individuals, we give each other the benefit of the doubt, always try to remember we are on the same team and that's more important than being "right" on any given issue.

We also make "gratitude lists", especially when we're feeling sorry for ourselves. We make a point to hold onto positive feelings and experiences and we gently question each other's negative thinking.

Healthy: We eat healthy, exercise, get plenty of sleep, and we take responsibility for our own physical and emotional and spiritual health. We also set aside time each day for non-doing; just being.

We try to not take things for granted among us and find ways to show each other our gratitude and how much we care. It can be small daily gestures such a post it note, a hug or making breakfast.

We pay attention to each other’s cues and know when it's time to be patient, to have some humor or to just be there.”

The Naples High School Italian Club’s purpose is to promote Italian culture throughout the high school. The most exciting and culturally invigorating activities hosted by the Italian club and supervisor Roberta Pennasilico are, by far, the cultural exchanges, or scambi culturali in Italian, between our high school and Italian high schools in and around Naples.

Students from regular Italian language classes and from the Italian Club are paired together with Italian guests for a school day. The Italians follow their sponsor throughout the lessons in order to learn more about the American or Italian school system and to be immersed in the language they are studying.

The most recent cultural exchange was one of a kind. Two classes of about 20 students from the State Institute for Higher Education in Pomigliano d’Arco paid a special visit to our school for a few sessions of complete English immersion. Five of those students made a video about the implications of the Italian Mafia in the Italian economy and two of the most famous magistrates who fought against organized crime and the Mafia in the late 20th century, Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.

Falcone and Borsellino were both murdered by the Mafia in 1992, only a couple of months apart, after their historic fight against organized crime in Italy. They are considered heroes by many people for their bravery and commitment to justice and for fighting against the Mafia without fear of the consequences.

The video was shown in Palermo, the death places of the two magistrates, and the FBI saw it. The FBI enjoyed their video so much that the students were invited to tour the training academy in Quantico, Virginia. In preparation for their monumental visit to the United States, the students and their classmates participated in a series of after-school English immersion sessions Oct. 20 - 23 at our school with the Italian Club and some students from the Italian classes.

During their daily visits, Pennasilico created language activities that facilitated the dialogue with our guests. Also, we received guidelines to talk about the importance of teaching obedience of law in the schools, of respecting the rules and paying the taxes for the wealth of our community. The five students and their teachers, Antonella Picciochi, Roberto Castaldo, and Imperatrice Natale, will visit the FBI training facility in Quantico and then New York City for sightseeing in November.

Pennasilico said that she is planning to organize another exchange when they come back from the states, so that they will tell us all about their American experience. We might have the opportunity to visit their school and spend a day attending their lessons and learning about their school system.

In the meantime, we have been communicating with our new friends through Facebook! I really enjoyed the experience, and know for sure that the other sponsors loved meeting and tutoring these new friends.

I first heard about the DoDDS Europe Language Institute (DELI) over the Intercom in the morning announcements. I was immediately intrigued by the fact that I could spend a week in Germany learning languages that I haven’t been introduced to. I decided to apply along with a friend of mine, not knowing that we would both eventually be the representatives from Naples Middle/High School. Before I knew it, we were at the airport with Nurse Hall and Mr. Noonan on our way to Wiesbaden, Germany for a week that we will never forget.

Our first night in Wiesbaden, there was an opening ceremony, which introduced the keynote speakers and had a brief overview of what we would be doing over the course of one week. Throughout the next few days, we spent three hours each studying the following six languages: Kiswahili, Arabic, French, Italian, Chinese, and Russian. My favorite language was Kiswahili, due to the fact that I was so uncertain of what it sounded like.

I was blown away by how many people actually speak Kiswahili, and I would love to study it more whenever possible. On our last night of DELI, there was "Speed Dating with Languages" which included 10 minute sessions of over twelve languages that included but wasn't limited to: ASL, Pashtu, Romanian, Korean, Somali, Portuguese, and Igbo. I was particularly impressed with the fact that these people dedicated the time to learning these languages and incorporated them somehow into their professions and careers. I met so many people, and DELI has made me want to further include foreign studies into my future possible career as a doctor. Overall, DELI was an amazing week that I will never forget.

Naples Students Attend Junior Leadership Seminar in Germany

Junior Leadership Seminar (JLS) is a six day event that occurs in Oberwesel, Germany every fall. This year’s seminar was held from Oct. 19 to the 24.

The program was started 30 years ago by a woman named Frau Inge Burck, who was born in Germany and lived through World War II. JLS invites the top student leaders from schools all over Europe who are in the 7th or 8th grade. This year there were a total of 130 students. JLS takes place at a youth hostel where adults teach the students about time management, decision making, and working with groups of leaders. If given the opportunity, it is an experience well worth taking.

While attending JLS, I enjoyed myself very much. The hostel we stayed in was filled with activities such as swimming, soccer, basketball, table tennis and

more. JLS was a great place to meet new, life-long friends. All the activities JLS provided were focused on team building strategies as well as learning how to lead leaders. I personally learned there are other people out there just like me and most importantly, I met plenty of new friends!

I also learned how to debate, fundraise, manage my time effectively, and other life skills.

We learned about consensus and the parliamentary procedure which was very interesting to me. One day we even went on a field trip and walked down to the river town of Oberwesel.

While in this small town, we did

some geocaching and went on a scavenger hunt. That was a very fun day.

I look at leadership in a completely different way now that I've attended JLS. I would easily consider it a life changing experience. I highly recommend this opportunity to anyone thinking of applying next year. It was one of the best weeks of my life. I learned a lot of important leadership strategies and made lots of connections with people my own age. I especially bonded with the five other 7th graders from Naples Middle/High School who attended with me. JLS 2014 will always be a part of who I am.
