Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples and the Combined Multicultural Heritage Committee recognized Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month in the Capodichino theater, June 30. The celebration provided an educational opportunity to all servicemembers recognizing the importance of diversity within the workforce. “We celebrated the diversities of our cultures by talking about what is significant about Pride Month within our LGBT community and sharing with our military and Department of Defense (DoD) workforce what the LGBT community brings to our workforce,” said U.S. Naval Forces Europe Africa Fleet Master Chief JoAnn Ortloff. “We are all equal and we are a nation founded for the people and by the people and today we the people celebrated LBGT Pride Month.” Pride Month is celebrated during the month of June by observance of LGBT history and related civil rights movements. Ortloff was the guest speaker and began her speech by recalling several cultural icons such as Tuskegee airmen, Navajo Code Talkers, Women Air Force Service Pilots, Cesar Chavez and Harvey Milk. These pioneers and icons inspired many people around the nation and the world to have hope.

5.1K for Chaplain Moves NSA Naples Community Story by Cmdr.Don Biadog, Jr, command chaplain, NSA Naples

More than 220 sailors and family members participated in the first ever All Chapel Fellowship 5.1K Run, Prayer, Walk, Stroll honoring Lt. Cmdr. John F. Keith, former Deputy Command Chaplain, Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples, on June 29, 2014 at NSA Naples, Support Site. The 5.1K chapel-sponsored event was held after the Sunday church services. The run is being held in remembrance of Chaplain Keith, who passed away March 22, 2014 after complications during surgery. Chaplain Keith was an avid runner and his wife Regina Keith suggested the idea for the event. The 5.1 K distance was based on Romans 5:1 (NKJV) "Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." Protestant, Evangelical and Roman Catholic congregations participated together in the 5.1K run/prayer-walk. Rear Adm. Christopher J. Murray, Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations (J3), Joint Forces Command Naples gave the remarks and thanked everyone for participating in the event and remembering his good friend, Chaplain Keith. Gas Station Closure at Capo

By Capt. Scott Gray NSA Naples Commanding Officer

Happy Fourth of July! Whether you find yourself enjoying a barbecue on Support Site today, celebrating out in town with friends, spending the day at Carney Park, or enjoying other parts of Italy or Europe, I hope everyone is able to kick back, relax, and enjoy a well-deserved day off that honors our national Independence. That being said, when you see those on duty this weekend, keeping us safe, securing our gates and standing the watch, take a moment and thank them for their service. It should be a scorcher today with temps getting into the mid-90s, so be sure to stay hydrated and seek shade while at work or at play. If you intend on driving over the long weekend, make a plan. Ensure that if you drink, you don’t get behind the wheel of a vehicle; take advantage of the shuttle buses between Support Site and Carney Park tomorrow for Festa Americana. We’ve had way too many DUIs this year, and a recent spate of injuries on liberty. Stay smart. ORM isn’t just for working hours; if you’re out of your depth, stop, think, and prevent a potentially life-threatening injury for yourself or someone else. Festa Americana, as I mentioned, will be held tomorrow at Carney Park, and should be another spectacular commemoration of our nation’s birth. David Cook, season seven American Idol winner, will perform in the evening before and after the fireworks show. There will be food and craft booths, a softball tournament, home-run derby, a beer tent featuring ongoing World Cup matches, live entertainment throughout the day, rides, competitions, and much, much more. I urge everyone to get out and enjoy what should truly be an awesome weekend at Carney. Then, this coming Tuesday, The Dave Matthews Tribute Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. at Support Site’s Central Park to close out the long weekend. There will be food and drinks in what should be a great event for everyone. In addition to all of the upcoming community events on the calendar, July will see multiple changes of command along with visits from distinguished guests to the Naples area. The Chief of Naval Personnel, Vice Admiral Bill Moran, will be aboard from July 15-17. There will be many opportunities for Sailors to participate in all hands calls and focus meetings. I would ask all to take advantage of the opportunity to hear from and engage senior leadership on matters of interest. Please encourage your Sailors, supervisors and co-workers to do the same. I look forward to seeing everyone at our 4th of July event tomorrow--enjoy some much deserved down time, take a few moments to reflect on how lucky we are as Americans and have fun during the long weekend!

The Dianna and Actaeon fountain are at the foot of the Grand Cascade in the garden of the Palace of Caserta (photos by Mare Hurtzig)

Discover the Palace of Caserta Story and photos by Elise Mare Hurtzig In the 18th century Naples was a part of Spain and the capitol of the Kingdom of Sicily. It was during this time that Charles of Bourbon called upon architect Luigi Vanvitelli to design a palace that was to exceed the grandeur of the Palace of Versailles in Paris, and the Schonbrunn in Vienna. Vanvitelli responded by designing the Palace of Caserta, which was to become the largest building erected in Europe at that time. Charles laid the first stone of this Baroque-style palace in 1752, on the date of his birthday. When entering the palace the sense of majesty immediately flaunts its presence. The Binocular Hall connects the entrance of the palace to the entrance of the gardens. The Hall’s towering arches perfectly frame the dominating and expansive fountain that flows down the center of the garden from the top of the hill, down through a series

of symbolic statues. After being welcomed by the spectacular framed view of the gardens, one must go up a luxurious staircase, in which a balcony hidden amongst ceiling frescos once held an orchestra that greeted the king, the queen and their guests when arriving at the palace. This staircase can also be recognized from the films Angels and Demons (2009) and Mission Impossible III (2006), in which it was used to mimic the Vatican, where filming is restricted. The staircase leads to the center of the palace, a marble masterpiece that symbolizes a cross connecting four important symbolic powers during that time. The center of the palace connects the coordinates of Rome and Naples, which is then crossed by a marble statue of the King facing the entrance to the Palace chapel. This is the same area in which world leaders gathered during the G7 summit held at Caserta Palace in 1994. This grand marble room may be bet-

Although, the chapel has since been restored, damage from the bomb can still be seen.

July Headliners: “Madame Butterfly,” “Zorba the Greek” and Jazz in a Crater By Lou Freed

Now in full swing, summer brings to Naples and environs sensational events led by the superb San Carlo Theater Opera Festival with world class lyrical and ballet performances. Currently intriguing musical fans for the uniqueness of the venue are the upcoming concerts at the Solfatara crater as part of the Pozzuoli Jazz Fest. Meanwhile, supporters of the Caserta Royal Palace are anticipating –poolside or elsewhere-- the magical weekend evening walks with magnificent views of water and sculptures in the expansive gardens of the Baroque royal abode. Then, turning to the tasty side of things, the recently inaugurated International Pizza Museum in town may prove to be a feast for both eyes and palate. Caserta and Salerno provinces are likewise hopping these days with their own summer programs. So, if you’re looking beyond beach and backyard barbeque scenarios this month, these events may yield a needed change of pace and setting.

Breedlove: Russian Actions Bring Europe to Decisive Point By Claudette Roulo, American Forces Press Service

The aggressive actions by Russia in Ukraine have brought Europe to perhaps the most decisive point since the end of the Cold War, and additional rotational forces may be needed on the continent for the sustained presence now envisioned, the top U.S. commander in Europe said June 30. Air Force Gen. Philip M. Breedlove, NATO’s supreme allied commander for Europe and commander of U.S. European Command, told reporters at the Pentagon that Russia’s actions show just how important it is to maintain a forward presence in Europe to reassure the nation’s partners and allies. About seven Russian battalion task groups remain on the border with Ukraine, he said, as well as numerous special operations forces. “That's not a helpful development in what it brings to the problem,” the general said. Russian regular military forces are facilitating the movement of forces, equipment and finances across the Ukrainian border, he said. “Russian irregular forces are very active inside eastern Ukraine. Russian-backed forces are active inside eastern Ukraine. And Russian financing is very active inside eastern Ukraine,” Breedlove said. President Barack Obama’s $1 billion European Reassurance Initiative will sustain U.S. forces in Europe and assist in protecting national security interests, the general said. “It's too early to lay out the details of what we will do,” he said, “but it will cover increased and enhanced training, readiness, exercises, and necessary facility improvements that we will need in order to conduct quality training and readiness activities with all of our allies and partners. The training efforts will now fall under

Operation Atlantic Resolve, the general added. “In this operation, we will continue to demonstrate our continued commitment to the collective security of NATO and dedication to the enduring peace and stability in the region, in light of the Russian intervention in Ukraine specifically,” Breedlove said. The situation in Ukraine changes some longheld expectations in the region, he said. “For the last 12 to 14 years, we've been looking at Russia as a partner. We've been making decisions about force structure, basing investments, et cetera, et cetera, looking to Russia as a partner,” the general said. Now, the situation is very different, he said, and there’s a new baseline for the conversation about U.S. capacity and capability in Europe. Atlantic Resolve will demonstrate the United States’ solemn commitment to the collective defense of all NATO allies, Breedlove noted. “Our ability to respond quickly to reassure our European allies and partners was enabled by our forward-stationed forces and the force structure we have in place now,” the general said. Breedlove said he believes the current force structure in Europe is about right, but additional forces may be needed to cover the sustained, persistent presence that is now being envisioned. “We are proud carriers of a legacy that began just over 70 years ago on the shores of Normandy. That legacy has endowed us with the NATO alliance and steadfast relationships with incredible allies and partners who have fought alongside of us in almost every conflict,” the general said. “It is indeed a momentous time in Europe,” Breedlove said. “But with the support of our partners and allies, we will face these challenges like we have in the past -- together -- and build a safer, more secure Europe.”

PRIDE MONTH

Continued from Page 1

“I would ask people to take away from the ceremony today that all of our cultures, our heritages, our diversities, no matter who you are or where you come from, we all have a struggle in our background and we all have overcome adversity and today marked a significant observance with LBGT Pride Month,” said Ortloff. During the observance, Information System Technician 2nd Class Denver Sizemore shared highlighted excerpts from the Harvey Milk “Hope Speech“ – “The only thing they have to look forward to is hope. And you have to give them hope. Hope for a better world, hope for a better tomorrow, hope for a better place to come to if the pressures at home are too great. Hope that all will be alright. Without hope, not only gays, but the blacks, the seniors, the handicapped, the us’es, the us’es will give up.” Harvey Milk was an American politician who became the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California when he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Milk was subsequently assassinated while in office in 1978. “Some of my very top performers are members of the lesbian and gay community and think of the impact it would have if those servicemembers were not allowed to serve,” said Capt. Scott Gray, commanding officer of Naval Support Activity Naples. “I will always welcome talent, dedication and hard work regardless of my Sailors’ sexual orientation.” The ceremony marks the first time an LGBT Pride Month celebration has been held aboard NSA Naples.

United States Navy Promotes Michelle Howard to 4-Star Admiral From Defense Media Activity

The United States Navy promoted Michelle Janine Howard to the rank of fourstar admiral July 1 during a ceremony at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus presided over the ceremony and administered the oath of office. Adm. Howard is the first female four-star in the 238 year history of the United States Navy. "Michelle Howard's promotion to the rank of admiral is the result of a brilliant naval career, one I fully expect to continue when she assumes her new role as vice chief of naval operations, but also it is a historic first, an event to be celebrated as she becomes the first female to achieve this position," said Mabus. "Her accomplishment is a direct example of a Navy that now, more than ever, reflects the nation it serves - a nation where success is not borne of race, gender or religion, but of skill and ability." "Michelle's many trailblazing accomplishments in her 32 years of naval service are evidence of both her fortitude and commitment to excellence and integrity," said Adm. Jonathan

Greenert, Chief of Naval Operations. "I look forward to many great things to come from the Navy's newest 4-star Admiral!" Howard, the Deputy CNO for Operations, Plans, and Strategy, will relieve Adm. Mark Ferguson III as the 38th Vice Chief of Naval Operations (VCNO) later this afternoon. Howard is a 1978 graduate of Gateway High School in Aurora, Colo. She graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1982 and from the Army's Command and General Staff College in 1998, with a Masters in Military Arts and Sciences. Howard's initial sea tours were aboard USS Hunley (AS 31) and USS Lexington (AVT 16). While serving on board Lexington, she received the secretary of the Navy/Navy League Captain Winifred Collins award in May 1987. This award is given to one woman officer a year for outstanding leadership. She reported to USS Mount Hood (AE 29) as chief engineer in 1990 and served in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. She assumed duties as first lieutenant on board the USS Flint (AE 32) in July 1992. In January 1996, she became the executive officer of USS Tortuga (LSD 46) and deployed to the Adriatic in

support of Operation Joint Endeavor, a peacekeeping effort in the former Republic of Yugoslavia. Sixty days after returning from the Mediterranean deployment, Tortuga departed on a West African training cruise, where the ship's Sailors, with embarked Marines and U.S. Coast Guard detachment, operated with the naval services of seven African nations. She took command of USS Rushmore (LSD 47) on March

12, 1999, becoming the first African American woman to command a ship in the U.S. Navy. Howard was the commander of Amphibious Squadron Seven from May 2004 to September 2005. Deploying with Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) 5, operations included tsunami relief efforts in Indonesia and maritime security operations in the North Arabian Gulf. She commanded Expeditionary Strike Group Two from April

2009 to July 2010. In 2009, she deployed to CENTCOM theater, where she commanded Task Force 151, Multinational Counter-piracy effort, Task Force 51, and Expeditionary Forces. In 2010, she was the Maritime Task Force commander for BALTOPS, under 6th Fleet. She was the 2011 USO Military Woman of the Year, and the 2013 NAACP Chairman's Image Award recipient.

Fleet and Family Support Center hosts Boots to Business By Fleet & Family Support Center Staff

The entrepreneurship workshop Boots to Business (B2B), hosted by Fleet & Family Support Center and offered by the Small Business Administration (SBA) was held June 19 – 20 at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Support Site. The course is designed to give students the tools to determine whether or not business ownership is right for them and how to navigate the path to becoming an entrepreneur. While previously offered only in the United States, the SBA is currently giving this pilot across Europe and Asia and it has been well received at several other bases. "We know that entrepreneurship is a viable career path for men and women transitioning out of the military because as a group, veteran entrepreneurs have the

highest likelihood of success,” said David Schultz, B2B instructor.” “B2B is a unique program developed and delivered by the Institute for Veteran and Military Families (IVMF) at Syracuse University in partnership with the SBA. It is our mission to provide transitioning personnel an opportunity to leverage the skills and tools learned through military training in civilian life.” While the course only touched the surface of exploring business ownership, it did provide valuable insight to transitioning service members considering self-employment opportunities by leading them through the key steps for evaluating business concepts and the foundational knowledge required for developing a business plan. Participants were also introduced to SBA resources that are available to help them access startup capital

as well as provide additional technical assistance. The SBA offers an eight week, instructor-led, followup course online that goes much deeper into the development of a business plan and tips and techniques for starting a business. Both the workshop and online course are free of charge. “I am much more confident of the road ahead than I was before I attended B2B”, stated Lt. Cmdr. Michael Smith who is considering opening his own business. “Having two full days with two experienced entrepreneurs who explained the joys and challenges of working for oneself and the common pitfalls was invaluable. I am grateful for the experience." This class will be offered again September 18-19 and December 15-16. For more information or to register, please contact your career counselor or FFSC at DSN 629-6372.

The event was made possible with help from volunteers from the Naples High School Wildcats, NSA Naples Fire & Emergency Services, NSA Naples Security and Security Gaeta Detachment, Naples Area Second Class and First Class Associations, Naval Hospital Naples Naples Culinary Specialists, FIL-AM of Naples, USO Naples and individuals who worked behind the scenes. Regina Keith, Chaplain Keith’s wife, thanked everyone who came out or volunteered. “Thank you for the overwhelming show of support with today's fun run in memory of a well-loved Chaplain, my loving husband John. The heat did not deter. It was great to see so many of you out there.” Though he is greatly missed, his memory lives on through the testimonies and the countless stories you've shared with me. Thank you for loving on Josh and I and sharing in this journey with us. You have all been a demonstration of God's love, grace and mercy.”

PALACE OF CASERTA

Carolyn Lambeth, a mechanical engineer at Combat Direction Systems Activity, right, explains the process on addictive manufacturing and 3D printing to Sailors during the U.S. Navy's first Maker Faire titled "Print the Fleet." The event showcased additive manufacturing techniques for Sailors and other stakeholders attending the two-day event. (Photo by MCSN Jonathan B. Trejo) Tours are available of the main living space of the Bourbon Kings and Queens (Photo by Mare Hurtzig). From the center you are able to tour the main living space of the Bourbon Kings and Queens of the past. Walking through the Queens room it is simple to imagine that this is where Queen Maria Carolina of Austria read correspondence from her closest and favorite sister Marie Antoinette living in the palace of Versailles. Each room is compacted with creativity and artistic details that come together to create an atmospheric masterpiece. Each room displays its own individual take of colorful frescos illuminating the ceilings; marbles patterns arranged from corner to corner of each floor; molded door knobs and keyholes; elaborate chandeliers, and tapestry laden walls. The mirrors that embellish each room have been worn by the reflections of passing time. These details lead you through an impressive yet small part of a Caserta Palace, a palace that boasts the largest by volume of all the other palaces of Europe. The 42 meter high palace is graced with 1,790 windows; however, more impressive is the windowless continuation of the palace that expands an equal 42 meters deep into the ground. After touring the apartments a visit to the palace is not complete until exploring the gardens. Many ways are offered to guests who wish to enjoy this experience. Bike rentals, horse and carriage rides, as well as shuttle services are available for those who want to see as much of the garden as possible without walking. Arriving at the top of the hill where the fountain of Dianna and Actaeon welcome the waters flowing in from the aqueduct, you have the option to continue up a small expanse of stairs to the place in

which the aqueduct water cascades from the hills and down into the palace fountain. From this height stunning views of the Campania region can be seen. To the left of the Dianna and Acetone fountain is the entrance to the English Garden. The English Garden has the power to conjure up feeling of a mysterious Eden that has been lost and is begging to be rediscovered. It’s a faint mixture of tamed and unwieldy foliage that transports those who visit into a lush hidden world where they can catch Venus preparing to bathe in a hidden pond. The palace of Caserta offers a remarkable sense of peace for visitors who may be use to battling the lines, crowds, and cameras of palaces such as Versailles. When visiting Caserta Palace, more often than not you can easily stroll to the front of the ticket line. Sometimes you are even able to be the only person in a room. The sense of solitude experienced in such a monumental palace allows for visitors to take a small moment in the history of the palace to connect to all the influential people and events that have graced the marble laden floors below their feet. It allows imaginations to optimize upon the moment and enjoy the beauty of a palace that exceeds ones as reputable as Versailles. Everyday tourists are allowed to feel more like VIP guests that have been allowed access to a private piece of history. The Palace hosts events and special tours throughout the year. If you plan to be a frequent visitor of this local jewel and wish to experience its beauty in the light of an array of experiences, then you can follow the Palace of Caserta on Facebook and Twitter.

Dam Neck Explores Future of 3D Printing for Navy By MCSN Taylor N. Stinson, Navy Public Affairs Support Element East

The U.S. Navy hosted its first Maker Faire, a series of workshops titled, "Print the Fleet," to introduce 3D printing and additive manufacturing to Sailors and other stakeholders attending the two-day event June 24 and 26 at Combat Direction Systems Activity (CDSA), Dam Neck, a Navy warfare center. The Navy's event took place on the heels of the first White House Maker Faire, held June 18. The White House event showcased the work of entrepreneurs and forward thinkers from around the country, as well as students exploring Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) related skills. "When you consider the cost and vulnerabilities of our existing Navy logistics and supply chains as well as the resource constraints we face, it quickly becomes clear that we have to reimagine how we do business," said Vice Adm. Phil Cullom, deputy chief of naval operations for fleet readiness and logistics, during a video introduction. "When advanced manufacturing and 3D printing becomes widely available, we envision a global network of advanced fabrication shops supported by Sailors with the skills and training to identify problems and make products." The Navy aims to train Sailors with this expertise in the future, according to Cullom. Adopting 3D printing and other advanced manufacturing methods could drastically increase the speed of execution, improve readiness, decrease costs and avoid shipping parts around the world "Think of it as another tool in the toolbox," said Jim Lambeth, "Print The Fleet" lead at CDSA. "If there is a part needed and it doesn't exist in the inventory, we could design the part on demand and that will help us cut costs. This is one of the advantages additive manufacturing is going to bring to the Navy." The Navy's vision is within days or hours of identifying a needed part on a ship, a model will be designed and uploaded to a database for printing, allowing for a more rapid response to the ship's needs. Earlier this year, amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) installed a compact 3D printer on board for testing. Essex successfully printed sample parts as well as trained its Sailors on computer-aided design software. "It's the biggest thing happening on the deck plate," said Capt. Jim Loper, concepts and innovations department head at Navy Warfare Development Center. "We put the printer on Essex specifically to get it in Sailors' hands so they could play with the technology and so we could learn the best way to use the printer." A number of Navy labs ashore have a 3D printing capability. But at sea, being able to use 3D printing successfully within the dynamic environment of a high sea state will be a major milestone. "The future of logistics is 3D printing," said Loper. "The quantity of supplies we carry on board could be reduced significantly if we 3D print those products on the ship. There really are no limits."

How much are you willing to pay to go fast? The Tutor System on the Tangenziale and A-1 is successfully doing its job of catching speeders who disregard traffic laws. In recent months, the Polizia Stradale issued over 450 tickets to Allied Forces Italy (AFI) registrants in the Naples community. These tickets were delivered to FPO addresses. Most of the fines range from €340 to €500. Some members are getting multiple tickets. The largest infraction recorded to date is 11 tickets for separate speeding events during a threemonth period. The service member’s heavy foot will cost him or her over €3,740, or $5,069 at today’s exchange rate. Speeding as little as five kilometers per hour over the speed limit may result in a fine of €154. The economic loss to the Naples military community and individual service member is staggering. The negative effect on your budget include increasing your insurance premiums, paying tickets and fines, paying for off-base legal counsel and
