Service members, Department of Defense civilians, family members and Italian guests came together at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples’ Carney Park for Festa Americana, June 29. The annual event, sponsored by Morale,
Welfare and Recreation (MWR), celebrates the United States’ Independence Day with the Naples community. Cmdr. Robert Barbee, NSA Naples executive officer, and the U.S. Naval Forces Europe Band kicked off the event at 1 p.m. with an opening ceremony and the celebration lasted until midnight. The event featured a softball tournament,
food vendors, a hot dog eating contest, carnival rides, live music performances, a pie eating contest and a high wire stunt act. “This is my first time here, actually, but so far this has been a great event,” said Personnel Specialist 1st Class Raymundo Aguilar. “Coming from San Diego we had events like this, but this event has been by far the best.” See FESTA AMERICANA Page 6

The Sesame Street/USO Experience Tour, created to reach out to military dependents of a young age, is the USO’s longest traveling tour and celebrates its fifth year of touring the globe in 2013 by traveling to 42 installations in eight countries throughout the European and Pacific Region. “Sesame Street knows fam-
ilies, and the USO knows the military so they collaborated and created this tour in 2008 to show their appreciation for sacrifices these families make for their country,” said Nicole McClendon, USO representative at NSA Naples. “This tour is currently our longest running tour and has already been performed more than 400 times.” The tour showcases the power of friendship while featuring Katie, a new “Sesame Street” character who is a military child, and helps her overcome her fears as she deals with moving to new places and meeting new people. “The Sesame Street tour

Captain’s Corner By Capt. Scott Gray NSA Commanding Officer
This week, families living aboard Support Site should have received a tri-fold flyer from Housing, along with some biodegradable wet waste bags and small plastic jugs for cooking oil disposal. As the trifold explained, and hopefully you’ve noticed in PAO notes, we are implementing a new recycling system aboard Support Site. Our goal is to bring our overall recycling to 50 percent of our total waste. This is ambitious, but I believe we can do it. We need to do it, not only to be good stewards of our environment, but to pull our weight with the surrounding community. Gricignano is required to divert half of their waste to recycling. As guests in this community, we can ask no less of ourselves. Local area residents leave different types of bagged recycling or trash on their curbs several times a week, where it is picked up by waste disposal. Because of the style of housing we have at Support Site, such an approach is not feasible for us, so we have worked with Senesi and the city to come up with a plan that makes sense. This plan includes 23 collection points, co-located with current trash collection areas. A map displaying these collection points was included in the tri-fold—along with information detailing the different types of colorcoded receptacles, and the required recycled waste to be placed in each one. Different types of waste will be collected every three days: glass one day, cardboard and plastic the next, composting and trash the next, back to glass and so on. This means we’re not tied to a schedule of having to put certain types of recycling out on a specific day. The receptacles are large enough that you should be able to put whatever waste out whenever you want. Biodegradable bags, available at no cost, were delivered to your residence with the tri-fold and cooking oil containers. Every two months, housing will have more of these free bags for each household. If you need more in the interim, or would rather purchase your own, the NEX and Commissary will have the same bags available on their shelves. Wet waste (compost) is probably the most important component of this entire program. Because it is the heaviest of any category, it eats up a lot of that total waste percentage. Getting this part of the new plan right is key; I can’t emphasize it enough. We all have to make an effort for this to work. The city has gone to great lengths to ensure our waste is collected in a timely manner and the Support Site is clean. We all want it to stay that way, and participating in this new recycling program is a way to ensure that it does. Additionally, garbage rates are determined by the rate of recycling for the community – the higher the recycling rates, the lower the costs. I know Support Site families want to recycle because I see it every day at the recycling areas and collection points. We now have reliable garbage pickup which better facilitates our ability to recycle. Now I need the community’s help in making it happen. Make sure you and your families are familiar with the new recycling plan and how materials need to be separated. Make sure you place recyclables in the correct containers because if they are mixed, the city will not pick them up. Make sure your kids know how the recycling program works especially if they are the ones who take out the garbage. It is important to get this right and build our recycling efforts into a successful program. Have a great weekend!

The Grand Pompeii Project The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) commission warned the Italian government that Pompeii needs a series of measures to be restored or the famous site will be removed from the World Heritage catalogue. The deadline is Dec. 31. Culture Minister Massimo Bray assured that the government is working to overcome the site’s urgent problems such as reinforcing buildings, restoring famous frescoes and increasing safety measures with video surveillance for 50 percent of the area. More staff will be hired to effectively monitor the site and avoid damage by visitors and 39 work areas will be opened by 2015. In March, the EU Commission approved a 105 million euros plan in restoration funds for Pompeii's ailing monuments, to be combined with matching money from Italy. The "Grand Pompeii Project", as it is known, aims to improve facilities for visitors and the European Commission estimates tourist numbers could increase from around 2.3 million a year to 2.6 million by 2017. Posthumous Lottery Ticket Winner In 2002 a man bought a lottery ticket and when he didn’t hear his number called out during a live, televised extraction, he tore the ticket in
two and threw it away. The next morning, while he was reading the newspaper he realized that his ticket was one of the 100,000 euro prizes. He found the two pieces of the ticket and tried to collect his money but the Italian State refused to pay him because the ticket was ripped. After 11 years, a judge in the Italian city of Arezzo ordered the Italian State to pay up on the lottery ticket. In the meantime, the man passed away and his family carried the legal battle. The case was won and the State must pay his heirs. A Guide to Pizza The food and wine publishing group Gambero Rosso guide was presented at the Citta’ del Gusto (City of Taste) at the Nola Interporto. This year the famous guide, published with support from the Naples chamber of commerce has a special pizza guide including over 400 pizza places reviewed across Italy. Naples and the Campania region numbered 10 pizzerias with the “three slices” or top symbol. Lazio region has the “three slices” with four restaurants, Veneto with three, Emilia Romagna and Tuscany with two. Ferrari Hosts Event at Ponte Vecchio Bridge The historic bridge Ponte Vecchio in Florence was closed to the public for about three hours last Saturday. The
bridge was rented to the Ferrari Corporation that hosted a private event there. The mayor of Florence Matteo Renzi endorsed the decision of closing the bridge for potential investors for Florence, such as Ferrari. The mayor said that the municipal government earned 120,000 euros from this event and it will fund holiday camps for disabled children. Graffiti Artists Arrested American and Spanish teenage tourists were charged by police in Florence for writing their names and date with a marker on a wall inside the Galleria dell’Accademia (Gallery of the Academy) that houses Michelangelo’s David. If convicted they face three months to a year in detention and fines up to 3,000 euros. Tuscan Turtle Recovers from Pneumonia A 30-kilogram female Loggerhead, called the Caretta turtle, was found seriously injured off the coast of Savona last month. She suffered from advanced pneumonia caused by numerous plastic sacks she had swallowed "mistaking them for jelly fish," marine workers said. The turtle was transferred to Livorno’s center for marine recovery, after her initial treatment at Genova’s aquarium. On Tuesday, the turtle was released into the open sea after fully recovering three miles from the Tuscan shore.

By Lou Freed To enhance travel abroad this time of year, summer events in Naples usually include foreign-flavored programs. Boost your American pride at a visual dance created by the renowned Asian American choreographer, Shen Wei, at the San Carlo Theater this month. In addition, view the unique and enigmatic photo exhibit on the award-winning New Yorker native, Joel-Peter Witkin, at the Palace of Arts in Naples (PAN). Last but not least, experience a super active and memorable holiday on a spectacular American cruise ship now sailing to scenic Mediterranean destinations from the Port of Naples.
Dance Described by critics as "one of the greatest artists of our time," Shen Wei is a distinguished choreographer, filmmaker, painter, costume designer, set designer and lighting designer. In his works, he blends Eastern and Western traditions, creating sensational shows that combine dance with music and visual arts. A winner of numerous
Celebrated American Artists and Mega Liberty of the Seas Cruiser in Naples’ July Calendar international awards, Wei also choreographed sections of the Beijing Olympics Ceremony in 2008. On July 21-26, Naples will experience Shen Wei’s genius through the Carmina Burana-inspired visual dance he created in collaboration with the San Carlo Theater Ballet Corps. The Orchestra, Adult Choir and Children’s Choir will likewise be in the program. Carmina Burana, Latin for "Songs from Beuern,” is the name given to a manuscript of 254 poems and dramatic texts mostly from the 11th - 13th centuries. Twenty-four poems in the work were set to music by Carl Orff in 1936, becoming popular and a staple piece of classical music repertoire. The opening and closing movement, "O Fortuna" has been used in numerous films. View more details at www.teatrosancarlo.it or call 081-797-2331/ 2412.

Cooper Union in New York along with his art studies at Columbia University. He is a recipient of numerous awards including the Commander of Order of Arts and Letters from France. The artist currently resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A total of 55 enigmatic photographs transcend reality as the artist’s creative and playful imagination reinterprets acclaimed European masterpieces (La Menina, The Raft of the Medusa, among many other works) or blends history of photography personalities (Muybridge, Rejlander and Holland Day) with western mythological figures as well as Greek, Roman, baroque, neoclassical and modern sculptures and art to wittily comment on the human body and beauty. Interestingly, numerous works focus upon hermaphrodites, transsexuals, dwarfs, cripples, corpses and dismembered body parts to communicate themes of pleasure, pain, deterioration and death, which have shocked critics and viewers, according to historians. Energy Conservation Have You Tried Daylight? From the NSA Naples Energy Management Team
It may seem like an odd approach, but a few years back, a naval shipyard adopted a lunchtime “lights out” policy in the production shops. Naval shipyards were all constructed more than a hundred years ago, and many of the shops are in tall brick buildings with a lot of window area. The lights out policy was intended more to increase energy awareness in the production shops than to save energy over lunchtime. But the energy savings surprised a lot of people. Some of the shops found that on nice days, they didn’t need to turn the lights back on in the afternoon. Another characteristic of shipyard production shops is that they typically aren’t air-conditioned. Leaving off heat-generating lights on hot afternoons can also improve comfort. That makes two good reasons to try shutting off the lights in the afternoon when you have a source of daylight. A few task lights here and there might be all you need to work safely and productively, while remaining energy-efficient. In other types of buildings, it might make more sense to close blinds to keep out the heat, especially on the south and west side of the building.

FESTA AMERICANA
Continued from Page 1
One of the things Aguilar found particularly memorable was the food booths, setup by many of the volunteer organizations from the NSA Naples community, offering a variety of foods from the U.S. “The food, that’s the best thing out here so far,” said Aguilar. “You got a mixture of everything and coming from stateside that’s good.” Serving up coleslaw and pulled pork sandwiches at one of the food booths was another first timer to Festa Americana, Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Vincent Gamboa. “I thought it was great,” said Gamboa. “I had a lot of fun volunteering and giving people a little taste of pulled pork and true coleslaw.” The festival concluded in the evening with a fireworks display during a performance by the Willy Pete band at 10 p.m. The event was the culmination of a lot of hard work by an army of volunteers and organizations. One such volunteer, Kathy Knapp, has been helping out with Festa Americana since 2000. “Festa Americana is a great event,” said Knapp. “I hope everybody comes out and enjoys themselves. It’s really just a day to relax and enjoy. To think about all those who have sacrificed for us so that we can enjoy our lives whether we be in the states or overseas. It’s a really nice event.”

Friends and Family Pay Final Respects to Adm. Frank B. Kelso II, 24th CNO By Chief of Naval Operations Public Affairs
Friends, family and colleagues gathered June 29 in the small town of Fayetteville, Tenn. to celebrate the life of and pay final respects to the 24th Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Frank B. Kelso II. The full military honors funeral took place in Kelso's hometown at the First United Methodist Church where Kelso attended services and was integrated as a pillar of faith and devotion among the congregation. Less than a mile from the church, Kelso was laid to rest at the Rose Hill Cemetery in his family plot in the company of his beloved relatives. Long time friend of Kelso and former naval officer of 27 years Chaplain Bill Perry helped preside over Kelso's service. Perry had a close spiritual relationship and friendship with Kelso who he said committed his life to decency, respect and integrity. Perry said that in life after the Navy, Kelso was devoted to helping spread the word of God. "The last time I felt like this is when I buried and did this service for my mother," Perry said as he gripped the pulpit to maintain his composure, suffering from the loss of his friend. "Today is a day we celebrate a life well lived and then we mourn heavily for ourselves," Perry said. "For the Kelso family you have to know not only is there a pain within this church and over in the overflow room, but there is pain throughout the naval community because folks who knew him and worked with him -- every person here -- knows that if you knew Admiral Kelso then you respected him, and you liked him, and if you were around him enough, you grew to love him." More than 300 people who loved and respected Kelso were in attendance for the funeral service. Current CNO Adm. Jonathan Greenert was among them. "Admiral Frank Kelso's bold leadership and innovative thinking guided the Navy through times of war and significant draw-down at the end of the Cold War," said Greenert of the late Kelso. "It was his strength of character and sure-fire integrity that ensured his success as a former CNO and to a higher degree solidified the formidable legacy of a great life that Admiral Frank Kelso leaves behind." Kelso, 79, had a long and successful career in the U.S. Navy and was known for his intelligence, strong character and innovative thinking. He was the third of three submariners in a row who served as CNO in in the 1980s and '90s. As CNO he led the Navy in a period of significant drawdown of U.S. naval forces following the Cold War. He also oversaw the introduction of new platforms and systems that improved capabilities, including precision strike operations. The nation persistently called on the naval capabilities
throughout his tour, starting with Operation Desert Storm. As CNO, he also oversaw revolutionary changes within the OPNAV staff and profoundly changed the means by which the Navy processed and made decisions. In keeping with joint staff practices, he changed "OP" codes to "N" codes, and the staff was reorganized to align with a "Napoleonic" arrangement used by both the Army and the Joint Staff. In a period of dramatic change, he helped to transform not merely the organization, but also the processes by which information could be shared and considered. He is credited with dramatically changing the means by which more informed decisions could be made by the Navy. "The ability to cut against the grain and find new and creative solutions for the Navy are what set Admiral Kelso apart from his peers," said Greenert. "It was an honor to have served with him and we are a better Navy due to his leadership and faithful commitment to our Sailors, Civilians and their Families." As CNO at the time of the now infamous Tailhook Convention in 1991 during which numerous incidents of sexual assault and harassment were found to have occurred, Kelso found himself at the forefront of a new horizon for the treatment of women in the military. Tailhook was a turbulent event for the entire naval department, and precipitated support in widening of opportunities for women in the service. Kelso, a proponent of allowing women to serve in expanded roles, embraced the integration. Upon selection for flag rank, Admiral Kelso served as Director, Strategic Submarine Division, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, and then was assigned as Director, Office of Program Appraisal, Office of the Secretary of the Navy. On February 8, 1985, Admiral Kelso became Commander Sixth Fleet and NATO Commander Naval Striking Force and Support Forces Southern Europe. On June 30, 1986, Admiral Kelso was promoted to admiral and assumed the duties of Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. Admiral Kelso became Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic and Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Command on November 22, 1988. He became the Navy's 24th Chief of Naval Operations on June 29, 1990. Adm. Kelso has been awarded the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Navy Distinguished Service Medal (three awards), Legion of Merit (four awards), Meritorious Service, Navy Commendation and Navy Achievement Medals. Kelso eventually returned to live in Fayetteville, Tenn., in 2003, a decade after retiring from the Navy. He remained there until his death on June 23, 2013. Kelso is survived by his second wife, Georgeanna, his four children and numerous grandchildren. Landess McCown, his first wife of 56 years, passed away in 2012.

reduce administrative distractions Website launches By MC1 Nathan Laird, Defense Media Activity
The Chief of Naval Operations' Reduce Administrative Distractions (RAD) Team website launched July 1, and the effort is underway to get direct input from Sailors on how the Fleet can streamline or eliminate administrative processes to allow more time to focus on mission readiness. The interactive RAD website provides all ranks, active, Reserve and Navy civilians with a platform to voice their concerns about administrative tasks, procedures, instructions and training, and propose solutions to fix these issues. It will function much like a social media interface, allowing users to comment and vote on posts. The collected data can be analyzed by many different variables, from what is bothering commanding officers to what junior Sailors are concerned with.

The site has generated several responses on a wide variety of topics including anti-terrorism force protection, quality assurance, Navy Knowledge Online and electronic routing. IdeaScale rewards users with merit badges based on their activity on the site. Data collection via the RAD website is phase one of the multi-phase approach to streamline or eliminate administrative processes in the fleet and is slated for completion July 31. In phase two, the collected data will be analyzed and the team will make proposals to the "owner" of the administrative program for automation, elimination, reduction or other action by August 30. Phase three will be the action phase, allowing execution of the reduction measures and will wrap up Sept. 30. Upon completion of the three phases, the program will promulgate the progress to date, moni-
COLA to Increase in Italy By Ensign Alexander Perrien, Navy Region Europe/Africa, Southwest Asia Public Affairs
Service members stationed in Italy will see an increase in their paycheck on July 16, when the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) will raise due to the latest results of the Defense Travel Management Office’s (DTMO) periodic surveys. Aviano and Sigonella are scheduled to see the largest increase of 6 points to the COLA index, followed by Gaeta, Naples, and Vicenza with an increase of 4 points, and Ghedi and Livorno with an increase of 2 points. “Each point equates to roughly a $27 increase in COLA,” said Lt. Cmdr. Robert Davis, Housing Overseas Italy Allowance and COLA coordinator. “Due to changing exchange rates as well as variations depending on pay grade, number of dependents,
and years in service, we cannot yet provide exact figures for each service member.” Two surveys, the Living Pattern Survey (LPS) and the Retail Price Survey (RPS), provide data to the DTMO which then recommends changes in COLA to the Military Advisory Panel (MAP). “The LPS is a triennial survey taken by service members, and then analyzed by DTMO to determine the primary and secondary stores we are going to use for the RPS,” said Davis. “The RPS is then conducted annually by a small all-military volunteer-team who records prices of 120 select products from the designated stores. The collected information is then used, again by DTMO, to calculate a recommended COLA.” The involvement of DTMO provides expertise for calculations and decisions that affect COLA.
“The DTMO Allowances Branch staff is made up of professional analysts, economists and statisticians, skilled in the areas of station and housing said Allison allowances,” Lovelady, Allowances Branch COLA Analyst. “We work closely with DMDC, DFAS, DOS, as well as private contractors to ensure we provide thorough and accurate analysis that is based on current economic conditions. Chief Yeoman (SW) Daniel Bowen, one of Naples’ RPS team leaders, already has plans for the scheduled extra income. “Any amount of COLA increase is always nice,” said Bowen. “It’s a good opportunity to increase [Thrift Savings Plan] contributions.” For more information and how to calculate your COLA allowance visit http://www. defensetravel.dod.mil/site/cola. cfm

FFSC Tip of the Week: Teaching Children Economics From the Fleet and Family Support Center
Should we do our best to shelter our kids from economic woes? Despite experiencing major financial problems, many parents continue to scrape together enough cash to finance their children's extracurricular activities, sports, and hobbies. In fact, one parent commented that he wasn't quite sure how he'd afford having his car repaired due to his son's need for new hockey equipment. At first glance, this behavior seems heroic. Taking a closer look, sacrificing our own wants and needs to maintain a high standard of living for our children may not be such a good idea. Let's consider some messages this sends to kids: • You are more important than other people. • Your wants and needs should come before others'. • When money is tight, there's no need to adjust one's expectations or lifestyle. • The real world works the same for everybody except for you. Please don't misunderstand! It is important for kids to enjoy healthy extracurricular activities and hobbies. In fact, research tells us that these activities help kids do better in school and stay off drugs. Here's the problem: When our children's standard of living grossly exceeds our own, we run the risk of them becoming extremely spoiled. Sometimes the most loving thing we can do is tell the truth in a matter of fact way: "I want you to participate in that activity, but we just don't have the money." It's truly amazing how well kids handle the truth when we aren't afraid to tell it!

6th Fleet Commander Hosts Reception Aboard USS Samuel B. Roberts From U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet Public Affairs
Vice Adm. Frank C. Pandolfe, commander of U.S. 6th Fleet, hosted a reception for local dignitaries aboard USS Samuel B. Roberts during a port visit here, June 30. Gaeta is the homeport of the 6th Fleet flagship, USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20), currently on deployment to the Baltic Sea. During the reception aboard USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG 58), Pandolfe thanked Gaeta Mayor Cosmo Mitrano and the local community, recalling their long-standing support for the U.S. Navy and their hospitality to Sailors. “The 6th Fleet arrived in Gaeta in 1967,” Pandolfe said, delivering his remarks in Italian. “Since then, this beautiful port has greeted 29 6th Fleet commanders, nine different flagships, and 27 flagship captains. All of them, and thousands of Sailors and their families, know and love this most beautiful city.” “Thank you for the kindness presented to our Sailors and their families during those many years. We consider it a great privilege to be welcome in your home,” Pandolfe said. Cmdr. Robert R. Williams, USS Samuel B. Roberts’ commanding officer, also expressed his appreciation to Gaeta community members for their welcoming spirit to the crew while the ship is on deployment. “Thank you to the members of the Gaeta community who have already given my crew and me such a warm welcome,” Williams said. Since deploying from it’s homeport of Mayport, Fla., April 23, the guided-missile frigate has traveled more than 12,000 miles, conducting maritime security patrols in the Mediterranean Sea. While it’s the ship’s first port visit to Gaeta, the Italian city has hosted many Sailors and boasts a long history with the U.S. Navy. U.S. 6th Fleet headquarters is located in Naples, Italy. It conducts a full range of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation missions in concert with coalition, joint, interagency and other parties to advance security and stability in Europe and Africa.

C-130 Marines to Conduct Missions from Italian Air Station By Sgt. Chris Mann
Marines with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 234, Marine Aircraft Group 41, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing are currently preparing to leave for Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy. VMGR-234 maintains a global mission that provides support for other military units and humanitarian support across the world. “The things we have been doing with our unit have been important; we have been refueling other aircraft, conducting air drops, and transporting cargo safely to its destination,” said Lance Cpl. Jonathon Lin, a 21-year-old crew master with VMGR-234 from Dallas, Texas. “I recently returned from another det. (detachment) where we have supported other aircraft needing to be refueled and supported the MAGTF mission (Marine Air-Ground Task Force)." VMGR-234 trains continually in order to maintain mission readiness in support of combat Marines on the ground and to provide critical logistical support to other units. The Aeriel Refueler Transport Squadron has typically maintained a high operational tempo that often supports other units. They also recently supported rotations near the Black Sea and areas in Africa. VMGR-234 is taking several of their Active Duty and Reserve Marines on this rotation to the Air Station. Gear and mission essential equipment is
being transported along with Marines to their assigned operation area. “This is a great chance to train with the experienced Marines and do my job in different environments,” said Lance Cpl. Justin R. Piedra, a 23-yearold crew master with VMGR-234 from El Paso, Texas. “Some of our capabilities include the ability to do low-level refueling and provide quick reaction in response to threats.” VMGR-234 refuels not only aviation aircraft from military branches in the United States, but also aircraft from several other countries. The Squadron recently took part in aerial refueling missions to provide fuel in the air for the Moroccan Air Force members. During refueling operations such as these, the Squadron’s aircraft can carry more than 60,000 pounds of fuel. This large amount of fuel keeps aircraft and other units mission capable and expands the distances each aircraft can fly. “My job keeps me loading equipment and pallets in our C-130, said Piedra. “We have been preparing for the det. and conducting workups for everywhere we go.” VMGR-234 Marines continue to carry the Marine Corps mission to every climb and place. Each Marine trains around the clock to support the Marine mission in Sigonella and operations globally.

Club Beyond Visits Czech republic By Arturo Paulino
Over 1,000 miles and lots of Auto Grills later, our Club Beyond Naples reached the city of Ostrava, Czech Republic for our first service project, June 15th. Seven of our students took on the challenge as we worked alongside Club Beyond Vicenza to build a playground for a local school in ProvaznickĂĄ, Ostrava. Beyond the playground for the children, our students interacted with more than 100 Czech kids via ESL classes, sport activities and arts/crafts
projects. Service Project 2013 involved a great deal of collaboration. Young Life Ostrava hosted our camp, making it possible for us to be in the local schools, providing worksite translators, arranging logistics like housing and local transportation, and helping us navigate cultural differences. The principals and teachers of our six school worksites invited us into classrooms, arranged daily schedules to allow maximum interaction between our students and Czech students, and allowed us to take over their after-school program time. The playgrounds were bought from a Czech company who supervised and certified our work, ensuring that the construction will be used safely for years to come. A Czech priest who is a friend of Young Life provided Mass in English for our students, and a local
Catholic Church hosted an evening concert for our entire group. Our campsite was on the grounds of Landek Park Mining Museum. The Landek restaurant provided dinners for all 400 campers, and we had a Czech work crew serving at camp. It’s amazing what hard work, open communication and pulling together towards a common goal can do to you. Besides the stories of stone cold showers, sunlight streaming into our tent prior to 5am and completely mutilating the Czech language, this trip was more than the sum of all these experiences. It took the same 1,000 miles to return back to Naples June 22nd, but by that time we were already a different group. Friendships were strengthened, physical labor exercised, teamwork encouraged, world vision enlarged and faith revitalized.
