Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples hosted the Halloween Spooktacular event at the Support Site Central Park, Oct. 31. Spooktacular, sponsored by Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Child & Youth Program, is an opportunity for the local community, to partake in Halloween festivities. “The event was created so our base

community had a piece of home during the wonderfully exciting child focused holiday,” said Catherine Knapp, youth activities manager. “The event started over 20 years ago at Carney Park with a few cabins being decorated and has blossomed over the years into a large celebration with over 4,000 in attendance.” The event provided a safe environment for attendees to participate in several activities such as trick-or-treating for the children,

mazes, a haunted house and contests with chances to win various prizes. “The most enjoyable aspect of volunteering at the event was aiding to a safe and enjoyable environment for children to trick-ortreat,” said Hospitalman Corey Keating, volunteer with the NATO Lions Rugby organization. “I also enjoyed contributing to the pure excitement and joy that Halloween brings.” See SPOOKTACULAR Page 7

XO’s Corner

By Cmdr. Jay Driskell NSA Naples Executive Officer

Many of us are heading into a four-day weekend as we take a moment to recognize Veterans Day on Tuesday. We do this in honor of those who have served since its inception in 1918, marking the end of World War I. It’s a celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. Our community consists mostly of veterans and family members of veterans. Many of us will take the day to relax and enjoy time with friends and family. I ask that everyone also remembers those still deployed or on the front lines away from their families. As veterans and military families, we may make up a small percentage of our Nation’s population, but we represent the very best of America. It was an important week as Americans voted in the midterm elections. Our voting assistance officers did a great job getting the word out about registering to vote and the options available to our military community to ensure they had a voice in their state elections. Being able to exercise that right to vote is important, no matter where we are in the world. We started this year’s Combined Federal Campaign– Overseas fund drive almost two months ago and I thank everyone for reviewing the cfcoverseas.org website or the booklets the command representatives have been passing around. It’s the one time a year more than 2,600 national and international charities are able to fundraise in the military. Contributors also have the option to give to our overseas military community through the Family Support and Youth Program (FSYP) fund. FSYP donations are returned to our installation and invested in quality-of-life programs for service members, Federal civilians and their families. On Wednesday, we just presented checks for nearly $25,000 to three organizations that give great opportunities to our youth. This was money that was donated from last year’s fund drive, put back into the community. Thanksgiving is approaching and I know a lot of people are looking forward to that traditional holiday meal, as well as more time with the family. It’s also a perfect chance to offer our single and unaccompanied service members a taste of home. Our Religious Ministries Team, the USO and MWR are doing their part to provide this chance over the coming weeks. In addition, you can sign up at MWR’s Liberty Center for “Adopt a Service Member” and open your home to someone who might not otherwise get that home-cooked meal. Both volunteers and single service members just need to sign up and they’ll work out the details. The holiday season can be difficult being away from family, especially overseas. Do what you can to ensure we’re taking care of our own Sailors serving with us here locally. In addition, there are a number of opportunities and multi-day trips to get out and explore this holiday season. Stop by ITT or the USO and see what suits you or hit up the FFSC to see what local festivals you may want to take part in. Whatever you decide, be safe, take care of your families, shipmates and each other. Have a great week!

New Findings in Pompeii

Naples Businessman’s Property Seized

Remains of dozens of clay pottery pieces were found near what was once a ceramic workshop close to the ancient Pompeii’s Herculaneum gate. Archaeologists said the remains will give more insight into daily life in the city of Pompeii just before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The clay vessels were used as drink or food containers. They are the result of work outside the ancient city walls near the Herculaneum gate where it is believed workshops and cemeteries were located. Archaeologists continue to uncover significant finds at Pompeii, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the European Union has devoted €105 million for a major restoration program called the Great Pompeii Project.

A villa with a swimming pool, 92 pieces of real estate, a Ferrari and a Porsche and company offices were seized by police from a businessman near Naples. The assets seized were worth about €165 million, and the businessman is under investigation for suspected extortion and allegedly setting up front companies with nine others.

Nero’s Villa Re-Opened to the Public Emperor Nero’s large villa, called Domus Aurea was reopened to the public. The large monument was closed for years after several parts had begun collapsing. The new opening was partly funded by media company Sky Italia, and will also be financed by a one of Italy’s first cases of cultural crowd funding, an initiative sponsored by the Culture Ministry, which is hoping to raise €31 million. The Domus Aurea was built by Emperor Nero after the great fire of Rome in 64AD that destroyed the aristocratic dwellings on the slopes of the Palatine Hill. Tours of the villa are offered in Italian, English and Spanish and are reservation-only. Tours take place on weekends and last one hour, as there is still maintenance and restoration work underway. Visitors will be required to wear a protective helmet.

Michelin-Starred Restaurant Near Naples 29 Italian restaurants were awarded in the Michelin prestigious guidebook. 27 restaurants received one star and two new entries received two-star level. Milan’s city has 58 Michelin-starred restaurants. Piedmont region comes in second place followed by the Campania region where 35 restaurants are starred in the guidebook. In Brusciano near Naples, Taverna Estia restaurant was awarded recently with two stars. The European Commission also granted the piadina from the Emilia-Romagna region with protected geographical indication status (PGI). The piadina dates back to Roman times and is a flat-bread sandwich filled with a variety of cheeses, cold cuts and vegetables. It can also have sweet fillings such as jam or chocolate.

Fiat Destroyed With Pickaxe A young man in Milan destroyed his brand new Fiat 500 with a pickaxe. He smashed his car in half after it wouldn’t start when he was ready to go to work. The car was brought to the body shop and police took the man to a local hospital where he had previously been treated for psychological problems.

November in Campania: St. Martin, NewWine and Chestnuts Italy and Beyond Lou Freed is a regular contributing culture and travel columnist for Panorama. To Americans, Nov. 11 means honoring Veterans’ heroic deeds and sacrifices. For Italians and many other Europeans, the day recalls the Samaritan deed of the ex-Roman army soldier, St. Martin of Tours. Tradition holds that while the good man was stationed in Amiens, France, he cut his cloak in two and gave half to a bitterly cold beggar. The humanitarian act, as the story goes, miraculously changed the chilly weather to a sunny day, spawning the Italian term, “L’estate di San Martino” or St. Martin’s summer. The expression refers to warm and bright

a breathtaking view of the naples Bay from the Baroque. St. Martin’s Charterhouse complex in the Vomero. Formerly a monastery, the current museum boasts fascinating frescoes, rich gildings and exquisite art collections.

November days following an initial autumn cold snap (or what Americans call Indian summer). The 11th of this month also marks the traditional Italian uncorking of “vino novello“(new wine) when vintners say the nectar completes its fermentation.

St. Martin as Patron of the US Army Quartermaster Corps The U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps (inspired by the French warriors that carried the cloak to the battlefield in the Middle Ages) established the Military Order of Saint Martin in 1997. The Corps declared the saint their patron and “a fitting symbol for Logistics Warriors charged with supporting victory now and for all time.” The Order has a three-level award program and a medal showing the saint’s humanitarian action described at www.qmfound.com/martin.htm. On Veterans Day, consider a visit to Vomero’s Baroque St. Martin’s Charterhouse, formerly a monastery and currently a museum. In the ex-pharmacy of the complex, view exquisitely handpainted majolica jars, one of which depicts St. Martin’s exemplary deed. Among the display of porcelain pieces is a marvelous one portraying the beloved icon. Plan an hour or more at this top notch Neapolitan site to marvel at rich frescoes, gildings and art in the church, cloister and

grounds. A “must see” is the phenomenal Cucciniello Nativity tableaux along with breathtaking views of the Naples Bay from the complex.

St. Martin and New Wine Celebrations Commemoration of the saint goes hand in hand with “vino novello” at these towns. Scisciano (Naples province) invites you to their “Sagra della pizzette e vino cotto” Nov. 8, 9 and 11. Read more at www.circolosanmar tino.it or contact 081-519-8731. On Nov. 10, Mignano Monte Lungo (Caserta province) will attract visitors with their local specialties at “Inno al Novello” (Ode to Novello). The Fest of Fests Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi, a beautifully reconstructed medieval town of Alta Irpinia in Avellino province, will celebrate “La sagra delle sagre” Nov. 15-16. The catastrophic 6.9 magnitude Irpinia earthquake in Nov. 1980 virtually leveled the town, but has since been a model for stepping back in time. At the annual gastronomical big-to-do, Avellino’s landmark wines -- Taurasi, Aglianico and Greco di Tufo -- compete for attention with mushrooms, truffles, cheese, chestnuts, honey and jams .What’s more, the event is a feast for the eyes with the array of local creations in wood, wrought iron and ceramic. Architecturally, attractions include the 10th c Lombard Castle, 11th c Cathedral, and 12th c Goleto Abbey (called the Assisi of Irpinia). Besides St. Michael the Archangel (the town’s patron saint), the Lombard residents in circa 1000 A.D. inspired the area’s name. Fabrication Begins for Future USS Daniel Inouye From the NSA Naples Energy Management Team

Bath Iron Works (BIW) celebrated the start of fabrication of the future USS Daniel Inouye (DDG 118) during a ceremony at BIW shipyard, Oct. 31. This first major ship milestone symbolizes that the first 100 tons of steel for the ship have been cut. "Construction on Arleigh Burke-class (DDG 51) destroyers is in full swing on the East and Gulf Coasts," said Capt. Mark Vandroff, DDG 51-class program manager, Program Executive Office (PEO) Ships. "The restart DDG 51s benefit from a mature and stable design with increased air and missile defense capabilities. These build on a legacy of success, providing outstanding combat capability and survivability characteristics." The ceremony came just a day after BIW ceremoniously laid the keel for the future USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115), and a month following the start of fabrication on the future USS Paul Ignatius (DDG 117) at the Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Daniel Inouye will be equipped with the Navy's Aegis Combat System, the world's foremost integrated naval weapon system. This system delivers quick reaction time, high firepower, and increased electronic countermeasures capability for anti-air warfare.

The ship is part of the Navy's latest flight of destroyer, Flight IIA, which enables power projection, forward presence, and escort operations at sea in support of low intensity conflict/coastal and littoral offshore warfare as well as open-ocean conflict. First-in-class ship, USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) was laid down at the BIW shipyard in 1988. Since, BIW and HII have laid keels for an additional 67 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers including Daniel Inouye. Destroyers have been a mainstay of the Navy's surface fleet since the first U.S. Navy destroyer, USS Bainbridge, was commissioned in 1902. Able to operate independently or as part of carrier strike groups, surface action groups, amphibious ready groups, and underway replenishment groups, today's destroyers provide the fleet with multimission offensive and defensive capabilities. As one of the Defense Department's largest acquisition organizations, PEO Ships is responsible for executing the development and procurement of all destroyers, amphibious ships, special mission and support ships, and special warfare craft. Currently, the majority of shipbuilding programs managed by PEO Ships are benefiting from serial production efficiencies, which are critical to delivering ships on cost and schedule.

Mount Whitney Returns to Gaeta By MC2 Corey Hensley

U.S. 6th Fleet command and control ship USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20), returned to its homeport of Gaeta, Italy, following routine operations to the Black Sea, Oct. 31st. During the underway, Mount Whitney made port visits to Batumi, Georgia; Constanta, Romania; and Burgas, Bulgaria. The ship’s presence in the Black Sea demonstrated the United States’ commitment to working closely with allies to enhance maritime security and stability, readiness, and naval capability; and our commitment to promote peace and stability to our NATO allies in the region. “I feel humbled and honored to be the Command Master Chief for this group of dedicated professionals. The Mount Whitney crew performed brilliantly alongside our navy counterparts during our time in the Black Sea,” said Command Master Chief Matt Dickinson. Throughout the deployment USS Mount Whitney hosted the U.S. Ambassador to Georgia, the Georgian Prime Minister and local government officials, the ship also participated in underway engagements

with our allies and partners that were designed to enhance maritime capabilities among participating nations. They also took part in COMRELs during port visits. The U.S. Naval Forces Europe Band performed concerts in Batumi, Georgia; Constanta, Romania; and in Bulgaria. “We were able to conduct a wide range of events, to include community engagements to underway engagements alongside our allies and partners from Georgia, Romania and Bulgaria,” Dickinson continued. “The Sailors demonstrated outstanding conduct and professionalism both ashore and at sea, making our time in the Black Sea both valuable and memorable.” Mount Whitney, forward deployed to Gaeta, Italy, operates with a combined crew of U.S. Navy Sailors and Military Sealift Command civil service mariners. The civil service mariners perform navigation, deck, engineering and supply service operawhile military personnel support tions, communications, weapons systems and security.

Naples Elementary School Sure Start Classes showed their gratitude to the veterans and active duty members in their lives Nov. 5 by putting on a performance. Rear Adm. John Scorby, commander of Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia, and his wife Christine were guest speakers at the event. Scorby addressed the crowd of more than 60 family members touching on the importance of family involvement with their children’s education and the benefits of the Sure Start Program. One of the highlights was when Christine addressed the parents. She spoke about her personal experiences of raising a family in a military community. She also shared that she understood the struggles of being a mobile family and how parents will be the one constant in their child’s education. A letter of recommitment to the Sure Start Program goals was signed by Scorby and his wife, Principal Chris Beane, Assistant Principal Arturo Rivera, Sure Start Teachers Bridget Ruffino and Karen Rodrigues. The students sang songs, presented handmade poppies to the audience, and enjoyed breakfast with their families. New Thinking for Tomorrow's Battlefields By MC1 Steven Khor, Submarine Force Pacific, Public Affairs

Sailors, junior officers and developers from around the nation attended the Tactical Advancements for the Next Generation (TANG) Expo at the historic submarine base on board Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Oct. 27-30, for a week long workshop aimed at new ideas and concepts for the fleet. This TANG was co-sponsored by Commander, Undersea Surveillance (CUS); Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet (SUBPAC); Naval Sea Systems Command Maritime Surveillance Program Office Systems (NAVSEA PMS 485); and the Undersea Systems Program Office (PEO IWS 5). It is the fifth in a series of TANG events designed to improve watch team efficiency, build smoother communication, create a stronger military community and boost skills in order to improve the capabilities of submarines, and ships and their crews in the fleet. The current event focused on process improvements for the Integrated Undersea Surveillance Systems community. "Your job is to use your experience, and tell us how to make the processes and more importantly the systems better so we can get better data to the decision makers," said Rear Adm. Phil Sawyer, SUBPAC commander, addressing those gathered to kick-off the week's events. "It is imperative that you dig deep and recognize that the feedback that you provide will make it to the fleet. They enable us to get the right data to the guy that is making the decision quicker and allows him to make a better decision, and that's fundamentally what this is about." The TANG events such as this one started in 2011, in an effort to harness views on technology to improve sonar and fire control systems. Sawyer said that because of TANG events, there are improvements in those systems that can be seen in the fleet today. Capt. Steve Harrison, major program manager for PEO IWS 5, believes the event will help the TANG attendees to come up with ways to rapidly implement new ideas into the fleet. During the week, participants utilized foam core, cardboard, markers and sticky-notes to

brainstorm clever ideas quickly throughout the room. The event included presentations, exercises, and reviews. "The developers are here to watch these ideas and over the next year or so rapidly turn those ideas into another round of more advanced prototypes that Sailors and junior officers will try out," said Harrison. "Those ideas that work best are then introduced into our systems as quickly as two years." Harrison said that they have used this design-thinking approach for submarine and surface ship sonar and combat systems over the past several years, and it has produced some great capabilities. Harrison believes TANG design-thinking events help support the Chief of Naval Operations tenets of Warfighting First and Operate Forward, because these innovative capabilities will be pushed to forward-deployed warships based on Undersecretary of Defense Frank Kendall's Better Buying Power 3.0 initiatives, which emphasize achieving dominant capabilities through innovation and technical excellence. Harrison added that the TANG design-thinking approach could really help solve many of the system problems we see in the Navy. "Our Sailors and officers live with these systems for weeks and months on end while they are under way, so they really know the limitations of the systems and have been brainstorming on every watch, what they would do if they were in charge of development," said Harrison. "These TANG events provide a structured approach for the developers to listen to their great ideas, and we are constantly amazed at what they come up with." Sonar Technician 2nd Class Adam Worzella, of the Naval Ocean Processing Facility in Dam Neck, Virginia, said he is excited to see the new challenges that will be implemented into the fleet from events like TANG. "I think it is great," said Worzella. "It will definitely make it easier to implement new systems and make it a more fun in the process of trying to figure stuff out from people who have been in and seen all the systems that we currently have."

Costume contests, music and even a movie were provided as part of the entertainment for Spooktacular attendees. (Photos courtesy of USO Naples)

Over 20 organizations participated in the event. American Forces Network Naples provided music, the United Service Organizations managed the maze, pie eating contest and costume contest. Also, the Naples Overseas Support Club hosted the pumpkin carving and decorating contest. Several other private organizations managed food sales and the trick-or-treat areas. “The H.O.G. organization donated their time as ticket

distributors in addition to 30 individuals who supported the hayride, ticket booths, set-up, clean-up and candy distribution,” said Knapp about the Harley Owners Group Naples Chapter. “Most importantly, MWR maintenance set-up all the tents and ticket booths, and supported trash pick-up and pack up after the event.” The NSA Naples Halloween Spooktacular is one of many events sponsored by the Naples Area MWR organization.

USO volunteers set up the maze and other events, while providing prizes for contests.

U.S. Naval Forces EuropeAfrica hosted 23 distinguished visitors from multiple European countries and Adm. Mark Ferguson, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa, aboard aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) as a part of the Navy's Distinguished Visitor (DV) Embark program, Oct. 30. The DV program is a unique experience that allows civilian and military guests board the ship while underway and experience the Navy's mission and witness carrier operations firsthand. "It's important to see the combat power of the United States Navy and to understand our strong support of the NATO alliance," said Ferguson. The DVs included Lithuanian Minister of National Defense, Juozas Olekas; Latvian Minister

of Defense, Raimonds Vejonis; Polish Undersecretary of State, Maciej Jankowski; Estonian Defense Forces Commander, Commander, Estonian Defense Forces, Maj. Gen. Riho Terras; and Spanish Fleet Commander in Chief, Adm. Santiago Bolibar. Bush also hosted DVs the previous day representing Bulgaria, Georgia and Greece including Bulgarian Minister of Defense Dr. Velizar Shalamanov; Georgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Maia Panjikidze; and Commander, NATO Missile Firing Installation Crete, Greece, Maj. Gen. Lazaros Skylakis. The DVs toured the aircraft carrier and observed flight operations from the flight deck. During the tour, Ferguson also met with Sailors about the ship and thanked them for their

service. "I'd like to congratulate the crew of the Bush on a successful deployment," said Ferguson. "The ship has done everything from engagements to combat operations in Central Command. You all represent the very best of the global U.S. Navy." During a gift exchange ceremony, Lithuanian Minister of National Defense Juozas Olekas spoke on the importance of working together in a multinational manner with the U.S. and other NATO countries. "We all know how important our cooperation with the United States is for peace and democracy," said Olekas. "Indeed, it was a very unforgettable day for me being on this carrier, this symbol of freedom. It is a symbol of our efforts for peace. George H.W. The Navy Clothing and Textile Research Facility (NCTRF), Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM) and Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) activity, is currently conducting a Navy sizing correlation study to gather data for an up-to-date snapshot of the size and shape of today's Sailors. "U.S. Navy body dimensions were last measured in 1997 for males and 1988 for females," said Capt. Robert Gantt, NEXCOM's Deputy Commander, Uniform Programs. "Based on a recent Army Anthropometric Study, it was shown that the average height, weight and dimensions of servicemen and women have changed over the past 20 years. So, updating sizing data in U.S. Navy patterns for uniforms and organizational clothing would help improve fit and comfort for Sailors." NCTRF has begun collecting 30 noninvasive body dimensions of Sailors at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia. In total, NCTRF will gather the measurements of 4,000 Sailors (2,000 men and 2,000 women) throughout the Hampton Roads, Virginia area during the study, which will last through March 2015. "We received information from the Navy Personnel Research, Studies and Technology on the demographics of all Sailors," said Louise Caulfield, NCTRF Business Development Manager. "From that, we are taking a statistically valid sample of Sailors based on race, gender and age to ensure that we have measurements of all the demographics represented in today's Navy. This will ensure we get a true representation of those serving in the Navy." Aviation Machinist's Mate 2nd Class Kelley Ward, assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 26, participated in the sizing study. "I love the idea of better fitting uniforms," said Ward. "With the higher number of females in the Navy now as compared to the 1980s when the last sizing study was done, it makes sense to do another study. I didn't think the measurements would be as in depth, but I'm glad it was. They got all the measurements they needed to improve the fit of our uniforms." Once the study is complete, NCTRF will determine if the sizing of military members in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army are similar enough to use the data the U.S. Army gathered in 2010 in lieu of conducting its own full scale scientific sizing study. "The sizing information we are gathering today could, in the future, lead to new updated sizing patterns for uniforms, organizational clothing and personal protective equipment, which will improve fit, appearance and comfort for Sailors," said Caulfield.

Naples Elementary School Holds Literacy Day By Jennifer Sharp Have you ever seen characters from storybooks come to life? For the past 4 years the 2nd grade team at Naples Elementary School has celebrated characters from our favorite storybooks in the form of a parade and fashion show. It's one of our favorite days as students bring so many wonderful characters to life. It always amazes us how students transform themselves into so many different characters from different storybooks. The Cat in the Hat, Franklin, Cinderella, The Gingerbread Boy, and Harry Potter are just some of the characters that paraded down the halls and across the stage Oct. 30. The weeks leading up to the event are filled with learning activities that help students understand their characters inside and out. Our hope is children are exposed to many different kinds of books and continue to develop a love of reading. Over the years, the teachers have collectively represented characters from Charlotte's Web, the Wizard of Oz, Magic School Bus, and this year we all represented characters from author Eric Carle's library. By Lance Kistler, 2nd Grade Oct. 30 the second grade at Naples Elementary School had Literacy Day. Literacy Day started at 8:15 and ended at 10:15. First, we paraded around the school. Then, we did a fashion show. Finally, we had a potluck party with lots of sweets. We did the parade and fashion show to have fun and to learn and celebrate characters from storybooks. The parade was in Sure Start, third grade, and kindergarten hallways. The fashion show was on stage in the cafeteria or MPR. The entire second grade participated in the parade, even teachers. Parents came to the fashion show and potluck. Almost everyone enjoyed Literacy day. I was Franklin. Lots of kids were Harry Potter or the Cat in the Hat. I thought that Literacy Day was fun!!!

By Mireille Foley, 2nd Grade Today was one of the best days of my life! I got to dress up as Sophie from the Roald Dahl book, the BFG. My whole class paraded around the school and we had a fashion show and some of the kids' parents came and saw the fashion show. Then we had a potluck party and I stuffed myself silly with candy. The best part was that my mom and sister stayed and we took pictures together. At recess I played cops and robbers with my friends. At music and movement we listened to Ghost Busters and we played ghost busters. My favorite part was when we had the potluck party.

USO Naples Hosts Olive Oil Tasting Story and photo by Cmdr. Don Biadog Jr.

USO Naples led over two dozen Sailors and family members to explore the Agriturismo area of Benevento (BN) Oct. 25. Yuliya Sanchenko, USO Naples guide, entertained all hands by sharing stories and the historical importance of various places in Italy during an hour bus ride from Campania to Benevento. The first stop of the USO Naples annual countryside tour was in “Laureto,” the family owned olive oil processing factory in the Samnium hills around the hamlet of San Lorenzo Maggiore, BN. The Procaccini family has owned and

operated the olive oil factory since it was pioneered by Giovanni Procaccini in 1925. The tour was educational and the olive tasting was delicious. The Masella family welcomed the USO daytrip group during the second and final stop of the tour. The family who owned the bed-and-breakfast restaurant Trattoria Masella was located in the farming village of Cerreto Sannita, BN, by the southern end of the Matese, a chain of mountains in central Italy. In Italian it is referred to as Monti del Matese or Massiccio del Matese. The Masella B&B and restaurant is an Agriturismo, an agriculturally based operation, and has been a popular place to dine and stay for locals and visitors since 1969. The dining facility was excellent and the four-course meal, all-farmed-based products, was delicious. The countryside view adorned by grapevines was spectacular.

The tourists were brought to the Procaccini family’s olive oil factory. The family has owned the factory for 89 years.

Male officer and chief service dress white (SDW) coats can now be fitted with a single metal hook and eye closure at Navy Exchange (NEX) tailor shops that will improve the collar neck closure, according to the Navy's Uniform Matters Office. This optional closure can replace the Velcro closure that is the standard closure for the uniform coat. Some wearers found the standard closure did not provide the right fit and appearance, particularly after repeated wear and dry cleaning. The hook and eye closure can help provide a better fit to the SDW coat. "The optional closure will help Sailors ensure the proper fit and professional appearance of their service dress whites, which must be maintain with all uniforms," said Capt. Janet Bristol,

Naples High School Wildcat Tennis Team concluded a successful tennis season Oct. 23 through 25 with seven players qualifying for the European Championships in Wiesbaden Germany. The players were George Shaffer in #1 Boys Singles, Helena Zirkle and Alicia "Jo" Nottrott in #1 Girls Doubles, John Sullivan and Chris Bracken in #1 Boys Doubles, and Jack Rinko and Seamus Wade in Boys #2 Doubles. Coach Theresa Burley and Assistant Coach John Wahlquist noted that each returning player improved their performance over last season's tournament. Coach Burley commented, “This team has a special place in my heart. I am so proud of them”. Senior George Shaffer led the team with an undefeated regular season. Having finished 4th in last year's tournament, Shaffer raised his game through hard work, dedication, and discipline to take 2nd in the Boys Singles. This year, he dominated during tournament pool play, losing only 2 games. Moving into the brackets round, Shaffer maintained his focus during a tough semi-finals match against Mediterranean Region rival, Ting Lin of Marymount International School of Rome. Facing Fabian Selvik from International School of Brussels, Shaffer won more games from Selvik than all other players in the tournament combined. Junior Helena Zirkle and sophomore Jo Nottrott teamed up in Girls Doubles for the second year in a row. After a slow start, they rallied to defeat a consistent Lakenheath team in the first match of the tournament. Gaining momentum and playing well, they lost to the

senior duo from Wiesbaden. However, with an exceptional performance in the final pool play match, they defeated a team from Ramstein. After not making it out of pool play last year, the Naples girls doubles team, affectionately referred to as "Team Jo-Z", improved their skills and tactics throughout the tournament, finally being knocked out of the tournament by eventual champs, Megumi Ogasawara and Maya Yoshihashi from International School of Brussels. Both boys’ doubles teams from Naples experienced the tournament for the first time this year. Junior Chris Bracken and sophomore John Sullivan fought through one of the toughest pools in the doubles draw and made it to the quarterfinals. Each put their experience in the 2013 European Championships to good use in reaching the quarterfinals as team mates this year. Sophomore Jack Rinko’s and freshmen Seamus Wade’s team qualified for the European Championships by going undefeated in #2 doubles throughout the regular season in their first year of competitive tennis, gaining experience and a hard-fought victory during pool play. Prior to Europeans, the Wildcat Tennis team had hosted a season-finale Tennis Exhibition with all the Italian Regional teams participating. According to Coach Burley, “The whole team worked very hard all year, came together as a team, and represented our community so very well.” Additional team members included: senior Francis Aquino, sophomore Lelia Thorp, sophomore Julia Wheelehan, freshman David Whiting. Junior high students, Samantha Morgan, Katie Bracken, and April Sullivan also contributed to an undefeated Wildcat Tennis regular season.
