MANASSAS, Va., April 24, 2015 – First Lady Michelle Obama announced yesterday that numerous technology and energy companies have committed to hire or train 90,000 veterans and military spouses in the next five years as part of the Joining Forces initiative. Celebrating the fourth year of Joining Forces this month, the first lady spoke to an audience of veterans, family members, business owners and government leaders here at Micron Technologies, which produces memory-storage devices. Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, launched Joining Forces in 2011 to honor and support service members, survivors, veterans, and their families, according to the initiative’s website. Joining Forces began at a time when the unemployment rate was 12 percent for service members returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and one in three of the youngest veterans who sought work could not find jobs, Obama said. “We issued a call to people all across the country,” the first lady said.

CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Doug Carpenter NSA Naples Commanding Officer

I visited Gaeta this week to talk with Sailors and our Gaeta families. It was an excellent opportunity to check out the facilities and see firsthand the great work our team is doing. I met with the Ombudsman and the Family Readiness Group for the USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20) to discuss their concerns and relay some progress on items from the recent IG Area Visit. I took a walking tour of the NEX Minimart, the MWR and FFSC spaces, and the many other facilities on base. I am always impressed with the teamwork of the Gaeta staff to get the job done in a remote location with limited resources. I presented eight awards to both military and civilian personnel crediting their teamwork and initiative. It is important to remember our installation has Sailors stationed in Naples, Gaeta, and Latina and is home to more than 41 tenant commands. We host many events on Support Site, Carney Park, Capodichino, Gaeta, Olde Mill Inn, and are often invited to events hosted by JFC Naples in Lago Patria. If you make the effort to attend these events and learn about your local community, you’ll be supporting the efforts of our many volunteers and you’ll gain a deeper appreciation of the region during this once in a lifetime tour. We are approaching the height of PCS season, and that means things are about to get really busy! Are you ready to sponsor new members of our community? Have you taken the sponsor class at FFSC? If you’re assigned as a command sponsor, contact the arriving member and family as soon as possible. Moving to a new duty station, especially one in a foreign country can be an intimidating experience. Offer to answer any questions and find out if there are creative ways to ease their transition. Once the member arrives, meet them at the plane and show them around Naples. Bring them to a grocery store, show them how to order food at a restaurant, help them find where the important shops and gas stations are. Giving new community members a tour of one of the many historical sites is also a great idea. Show them Solfatara, Paestum, Pompeii, or Herculaneum. Get tickets for a show at Teatro di San Carlo and have a dinner out on the town. I have heard of some sponsors going so far as to prepare gift baskets filled with local cibo and essential items for the first few days. If you have recently arrived in Naples or will be arriving soon I encourage you, outside of the items required for check-in and beginning your new job, to do some research on the incredible history of this ancient city. There are a number of books that do a great job of summarizing the history of Naples even more that dive into specific periods of time. I would also highly recommend creating a checklist of things you want to do while stationed here. Two and three year tours will fly by with all of the opportunities for travel and adventure. I would like everyone to make note of the upcoming Brit Fete from 2 to 6 p.m. on May 15. Military ID holders and their families are invited to JFC to experience the finest of British culture and tradition. While you’re there check out the International Store. There will be lots of activities, and from what I heard last year’s event was a great experience. It’s free and there will be busses between Support Site and JFC so there are few excuses to miss out on what promises to be a fantastic event. Enjoy the weekend, enjoy the spring weather, and please drive safe!

Expo Milan Opens Today Expo Milan 2015 opens its doors today through October 31. The official theme chosen for the 2015 Milan Universal Exposition is Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life. This embraces technology, innovation, culture, traditions, techniques in the kitchen, creativity and how they relate to food and diet. Milan will be a global showcase on nutrition and gastronomy-themed fest with more than 50 countries hosting exhibitions in purpose-built pavilions and a total of more than 140 involved in being able to guarantee healthy, safe and sufficient food for everyone. This event is expected to draw more than 20 million visitors to Italy with its 1.1 million square meters of exhibition area and estimated benefit to the country at 10 billion euros. Sections of a Leonardo Da Vinci mural are going on show at Milan’s Expo 2015. The discovered parts of the mural include a countryside landscape, a few houses and a church on top of a steep hill. The drawings were discovered two years ago during restoration work in the Sforza castle in Milan. Leonardo was asked by Ludovico Sforza in 1498 to decorate a room in the castle which was used to welcome guests and ambassadors. The landscape of the mural is almost identical to the “Last Supper,” framed in the window just behind Jesus’ head. Growing Trend: Drone Schools in Italy About 85 schools for piloting drones opened last year and earned recognition from Italy's ENAC national civil aviation agency. Mostly young people attended schools teaching the theory and practice of using unmanned aircraft in Italy. Drones can be used in many sectors including television, agriculture, environmental monitoring and security. An aeronautic salon on drones is due to be held at Rome's Urbe airport May 29-31

NAVY HISTORY: FIRST AMERICAN MANNED SPACE FLIGHT From National Aeronautics and Space Administration

On May 5, 1961, Mercury astronaut Navy Cmdr. Alan Shepard Jr. became the first American in space. Shepard launched at 9:34 a.m. ET aboard his Freedom 7 capsule, powered by a Redstone booster, dubbed Mercury-Redstone 3. Shepard’s flight had been delayed several times, leading him to launch three weeks after Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, became the first man in space. Shepard’s flight aboard Freedom 7 lasted a mere 15 minutes and 28 seconds, and covered a distance of 303 statute miles. He reached an altitude of 116.5 statute miles with a velocity of 5,134 mph. Recovery was by HUS1 helicopter of HMR(L)-262 from the Essex-class aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain (CVS 39). After splashing down to Earth, Alan was met with fanfare and even received a personal phone call from President Kennedy who had watched Alan's flight on television. The “Kennedy Call” would become a tradition for all manned Mercury flights. The main scientific objective of project Mercury was to determine man’s capabilities in a space environment and in those environments to which he will be subject upon going into and returning from space. A few of the basic flight problems included: the development of an automatic escape system, vehicle control during in-

sertion, behavior of space systems, evaluation of pilots capabilities in space, in flight monitoring, retrofire and reentry maneuvers and landing and recovery. After medical tests and debriefings Alan was found to be in excellent shape, which meant that America’s manned space flight program would move forward. Shepard was born Nov. 18, 1923 in East Derry, N.H., and later graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1944. He served onboard the destroyer USS Cogswell (DD 651) in the Pacific theater during the last year of World War II. He later became a Naval Aviator and test pilot. In 1959 Shepard was selected by the newly created National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) from a field of 110 candidates to become one of the “original Seven” Mercury astronauts. In 1964 Shepard was grounded because of Meniere’s disease, an inner ear disorder. He worked as Chief of the Astronaut Office until 1969 when a new surgical technique cleared up his ear problem. He was soon restored to full

flight status, and was named commander of Apollo 14. A decade after making his historic flight, Shepard, the oldest astronaut in the space program at the age of 47, achieved his life-long dream; he stepped onto the surface of the moon on Feb. 5, 1971, becoming not only the fifth person to walk on the surface of the moon, but also the only one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts to make it to the moon. “It’s been a long way, but we’re here,” he reported to Houston after landing. At the end of his moonwalk, Shepard drove two golf balls for what he remarked was “miles and miles” as a way to demonstrate what the moon’s lack of atmosphere and much smaller gravitational force would mean for a familiar earthbound activity. Shepard retired from NASA and the Navy with the rank of rear admiral on Aug. 1, 1974. Among his many honors and awards, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. He died July 21, 1998 at the age of 74.

CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL from page 1 Day festivities. The children are encouraged to interact with peers from different cultures to build friendships and develop a deeper understanding of one another in order to establish the foundations of world peace in future. Following a brief visit to Headquarters, the students and JFC Naples staff relocated to the soccer field where the festival took place. The ceremony opened with the Italian and Turkish national anthems followed by speeches of Lt. Gen. Leonardo di Marco and the Turkish Senior National Representative, Maj. Gen. Mujdat Uzun. “We are extremely happy to have you at JFC Naples for this special day,” said Lt. Gen. Leonardo di Marco said. “I would like to thank all of the people responsible for organizing this beautiful festival which is an annual commemoration of children,” “Dear children, you are our future,” Maj. Gen. Uzun said. “You will be leading your nations and our world tomorrow. Please spread the spirit of brotherhood and love to all among us here today.” The festival centered on performances of dance, folk dance, singing and acting performed by children from eight different schools from around Naples. Following the performances, prizes ranging from bicycles to MP3 players were awarded to winners of the festival’s art competition. Finally, the event culminated with all the children joining together on stage and singing “We Are the World.”

Lt. Shantel Honer hails from Buffalo, N.Y., where she graduated from Daemen College with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She worked in a busy hospital in Buffalo for several years prior to pursuing her long sought-after goal of joining the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps. Her initial assignment was to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP), Va., where she worked on the Post-Partum and complicated Obstetrics Ward. She transitioned to NMCP’s labor and delivery, the busiest labor and delivery department in the Department of Defense, averaging nearly 300 births each month. Honer arrived in Naples in September 2014. She is assigned to the Multi-Service Ward at U.S. Naval Hospital Naples, caring for a wide range of Pediatric, Intrapartum, Postpartum, Medical-Surgical, and Behavioral Health patients. Honer is working on her master’s degree in business administration with a concentration in leadership, and she plans to complete her nursing specialty test for Obstetrics certification this year. In her spare time between work and school, she spends time traveling with her husband, and eight-month old son. They are enjoying the Naples area and all that Italy and living abroad has to offer.

RCS is a five-week class that teaches Coastal Riverine Force Sailors combat skills, weapons fundamentals and equipment, land navigation, urban operations, offensive and defensive patrolling, and communications. Since the Defense Department rescinded a 2013 policy that excluded women from serving in direct ground combat positions, the services have opened about 91,000 jobs to female service members. WASHINGTON – Following the 2013 reversal of a policy that prevented women from serving in direct ground combat roles, the Defense Department’s unwavering position has been “the right standards and policies” must exist to support it, a senior Pentagon personnel official said April 27. Juliet Beyler, director of officer and enlisted personnel management in the office of the deputy assistant secretary of defense for military personnel policy, addressed the policy angle of the reversal in a discussion of women in combat at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. “The experience gained in Iraq and Afghanistan and DoD discussions in 2010, ’11 and ’12 led the [Joint Chiefs of Staff] to the unanimous conclusion the time had come for us to change our thinking,” Beyler said. “The tipping point had been reached.” Now, the presumption is that every specialty should be open to women unless a case can be made to keep it closed, said Beyler, who served in the Marine Corps for 23 years. “That was a big [DoD] decision on assignment policy.” Then-Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey rescinded the direct combat definition and assignment rule in January 2013.

women into those jobs previously closed jobs [to them],” she said. They also looked at how to review and validate their occupational standards to ensure they’re upto-date, operationally relevant and applied gender neutrally. Defense Secretary Ash Carter is expected to announce final decisions early next year on integration of remaining closed occupations and any approved exceptions to policy. “Since early 2013, DoD, services and Socom have been thoughtfully and thoroughly implementing this policy change,” Beyler explained. Congress has since been notified by the services that 91,000 jobs once closed to women are now open to them, she said.

“The time had come for us to change our thinking ... The tipping point had been reached.”

How the Policy Was Changed “They directed the development of plans, describing how each service and Special Operations Command intends to integrate

Training, Education Paths Opening “One of the chairman’s guiding principles was to ensure service members are set up for success with viable career paths,” Beyler said. “So, not only are we opening the occupations, we’re identifying and opening all the schools, the skill identifiers and the professional development path. It’s a holistic effort.” Of the 240,000 positions that are still closed, most are in infantry, armor, artillery and special operations, which Beyler said she knew would be the most difficult to review. “Through this we expect to learn a lot – possibly more about our existing forces and training pipelines as we will about gender integration, validating the standards regardless of the service member performing them, [and it] will only enhance the quality, readiness and the overall effectiveness of our force,” Beyler said.

Seeking Suggestions From E-7 and Above on Future of Navy and Marine Corps Officers By Naval Service Training Command Public Affairs

GREAT LAKES, Ill. – Naval Service Training Command (NSTC) and the United States Naval Academy (USNA) will use crowd-sourcing to receive ideas and suggestions from the entire Navy Officer Corps and Chief's Mess regarding the core competencies of our future Navy and Marine Corps officers, through May 7. NSTC and USNA will launch the crowd-sourcing interactive website, MMOWGLI, which stands for "Massive Multi-player Online Wargame Leveraging the Internet," as a tool and initiative to seek input that will impact the future of the naval officer corps. The portal will be open through May 7th for all officers and senior enlisted from every community to contribute at https://portal.mmowgli.nps.edu/pcc. The crowdsourcing site is an Office of Naval Research (ONR) and Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) product and has been utilized on over a

dozen different projects to utilize input from a large community of people to generate ideas and proposed solutions to large complex problems. Past games include Piracy, Energy, and Electromagnetic Maneuver. NSTC and USNA will obtain fleet inputs from the officer and senior enlisted community throughout the Navy in a manner that will gen-

erate a comprehensive set of recommendations that will assist in validating and/or revising the Professional Core Competencies (PCC) Manual. Professional Core Competencies set the professional development curriculum at every officer accession command. The game allows players to choose core competencies, identify ideas of concern or revision and elaborate on them for refinement. There is no time commitment required for gameplay and your submissions will be anonymous. The game will be open 24-hours a day during the open period. This is an opportunity for everyone from senior enlisted and junior officers to command master chiefs and commanding officers to have an impact on the common core curriculum for the officers who are leading Sailors and contributing to the mission of the Navy. For more information about the game visit the portal and log in https://portal.mmowgli.nps.edu/pcc.

Following the tree-planting, service members from all tenant commands and the local community took part in a base cleanup which included removal of trash and leaves from the streets and recreational areas.

EARTH DAY from page 1 and help ensure a viable planet for generations to come. Since 2013, NASCPOA members have hosted treeplanting events on Earth Day, extending the invite to local associations and commands to assist in beautifying the installation. “Earth Day is important not just today but every day of the year,” said Construction Electrician 2nd Class Charis DePena, vice president of the Naples Area Seabee Association. “Everyone should focus on environmental awareness and protection. Events like this help us keep our base clean and send a message to the surrounding area that we value our place in the com-

munity and that we are willing to work hard to protect Italy’s environment.” PWD Naples also helped promote public awareness about environmental issues and encouraged people to think about what they can do to make a difference in their lives and to make the world a better place. They provided information about saving energy, challenged service members on their recycling knowledge with a trivia game, and gave out U.S. Department of the Navy memorabilia such as mouse pads, post-its and notepads. “The focus is to think “green” every day of the year and make protecting the environment an essential part of your daily routine,” said AnnMarie

Buzz Off Mosquitos! By Lt. Courtney Coker and William Raspet

It is that time again … for mosquitos. Here is some helpful information on what you can do to help to protect you and your loved ones. Mosquito bites can cause skin irritation through an allergic reaction to the mosquito’s saliva – this is what causes the red bump and itching. A more serious consequence of mosquito bites can be the transmission of diseases such as Malaria, Dengue fever, and several forms of Encephalitis, including the West Nile virus and even newer viruses such as Chikungunya. These diseases are closer to home than you may think. Italy had an outbreak of Chikungynya in 2007 and 14 cases of West Nile Virus confirmed in 2011. Mosquitoes can also transmit diseases and parasites to our pets such as heartworms and the West Nile Virus. All mosquitoes require water to breed. Breeding environments can include ponds, ditches, old tires, buckets, toys, potted plant trays and saucers, plastic covers or tarpaulins and even places as small as bottle caps. Eliminating standing water sources will assist in controlling the mosquito population. Follow these tips to protect yourself and your loved ones from the exposure to mosquito bites: ● Stay inside or in screened-in areas during mosquito hours. Mosquitoes tend to be more active during sunrise, sunset, and in early evening. ● Cover up. During heavy mosquito hours, put on long sleeve shirts, long pants, socks, and closed-toe shoes. ● Plug in a fan. This will help you keep cool and keep mosquitoes from landing on you. Mosquitoes are not very efficient flyers, even in wind speeds as low as 5 mph. ● Use an outdoor LED or yellow bug light. Use them on your porch and around your house, they don’t attract pests as much as other lights. ● Use a repellent. Repellents containing Picaradin, DEET, or oil of lemon-eucalyptus have been shown to be effective in repelling mosquitoes and ticks. ● Remove standing water. Removing the areas where mosquitos to breed and reproduce will help lower the mosquito population around your yard and home. If you are a pet parent remember, your furry friends are also at risk for contracting heartworms and even the West Nile Virus, if left unprotected. Be sure to follow the first line of defense guidelines provided by veterinary services to ensure your pet stays happy and healthy. Only use products approved by your veterinarian, and never use any human products on your pets. Consult your veterinarian if you have questions or concerns. The U.S. Naval Hospital Naples Preventive Medicine Department will be monitoring the mosquito population at Support Site frequently, identifying problematic areas in a timely manner, and to assist in the prevention of an increased mosquito population. If you see any breeding areas such as potholes, swampy areas and areas of standing water around the installation notify Preventive Medicine or the Public Works Department. Identification is one of the first steps toward ensuring a happier and safer population. Additional information on mosquito control can be located at: http://www2.epa.gov/mosquitocontrol

In the month of colorful blooms, with heady fragrances all around us, Naples’ annual “Maggio dei Monumenti” offers bunches of activities to get everyone out and about to enjoy spring weather at locally treasured sites. Furthermore, the annual culinary fest at a school in Licola of Pozzuoli along with the popular Vitigno Italia wine fair return to toast May’s efflorescence. Two art exhibitions are also in town to delight Pop Art buffs while a Verdi opera is set to amaze music devotees. Consider these events to celebrate and treat Mom before and after her special day on the 10th. Mother’s Day Roses the order of the day As the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers” and roses are among those that run riot this time of year, making them a favored gift for “la festa della mamma.” Roses are said to have been cherished by Isis – fertile wife of Egyptian god Osiris and divine mother of pharaohs – whose esteem Roman soldiers brought home from Egypt. It is said the portrayal of Isis nursing her son, Horus, may have spawned Christian depictions of the Madonna and Child, speaking of which prevail in many Italian museums. Mom may not mind viewing some artistic renditions on the motif besides world-class works by Titian, Caravaggio and other master artists at the Capodimonte Museum in Naples.

The museum in via Miano is open 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily except Wednesday. This is a special time for those of us living in the area as it is scheduled before the tourist season gets going. To enhance this year’s leitmotif, different colors have been chosen for each week to underscore Naples’ attributes. The red color for week May 1-7 represents San Gennaro’s blood and people’s passion for life and food as examples; black and white for week May 8-14 recall piano keys to symbolize the locals’ love for music; blue for week May 15-21 celebrates the city’s lovely sea views and sunny skies; yellow for week May 22-28 reflects the Neapolitan love for gold in jewelry, architectural gildings and the tuff stone building material. Lastly, green for May 29-June 2 stands for the city parks, hidden gardens and cloisters in many parts of the city. To involve Neapolitan youths in the initiative, schools participate in the “Adopt a Monument” program whereby students become guides at the selected sites. From experience,

Enogastronomy “Festival of Ancient Taverns” at Licola agriculture school Today through Sun, students and teachers at the Giovanni Falcone Institute for Agriculture and Environment will combine their cooking talents and skills for the return of their annual celebration of nature and food. Of interest is the school’s setting within an archaeological park along the Roman-era Domitian road, which parallels the current eponymous thoroughfare in Pozzuoli. Not many students can be so lucky and privileged to be studying while immersed in a zone steeped in Roman history and remains. For the 2015 edition, event organizers promise an explosion of colors and scents animated by more than 300 people in eighteenth century genre costumes. Folk style cuisine will be served at seven “antiche tavern,” each with a different menu from the era. No doubt, participation at this event may mean discovery of provisions in Naples three centuries ago. What’s more, costumed musicians and dancers will be around to provide entertainment. The school is at 150 via Domiziana in front of the “Villaggio Ideal Camping” near Parco Azzurro and Lago Patria. Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Event details are at www.istitutofalcone.gov.it “Phlegrean flavors” fest at Pozzuoli San Gennaro Church This savory event May 29-31 will help raise funds for the small church named for Naples’ patron saint. Besides its regular religious activities, the church with panoramic Pozzuoli Bay views also feeds the unfortunate. Thus, the community is enjoined to experience the team effort among the Franciscan fathers assigned to the church and their patrons to provide aromatic and delicious “sapori flegrei” to fest participants. Visit http://www.santuariosangennaro.it/ for info on the church. Italian wines showcased Mark your calendars for “Wine and the City” May 6-20 followed by “Vitigno Italia” May 24-26. While the first event gathers wine enthusiasts to restaurants, wine bars, art galleries, design studios and boutiques, the second happening is a wine fair at Castel dell’ovo to showcase Italian wines made from indigenous and other types of vines. And speaking of roots, Neapolitan historians say the prized castle venue rose in the area of the first settlers in Naples. Vitigno Italia is a great event to taste different wines from the area as the entry fee includes a glass and tastings. Just make sure you designate a driver. Visit http://www.wineandthecity.it/ and http://www.vitignoitalia.it/ for specifics on both wine events.

Cantine Aperte returns last weekend of May “Open Cellars” aims to market Italian wines as well as draw tourism to vineyards, according to Movimento Turismo del Vino (Wine Tourism Movement). The May 30-31 event also provides opportunities for wine lovers to sample wines plus directly purchase products from producers joining in the event. For participating Campanian wineries, see http://www.movimentoturismovino.it Opera Guiseppe Verdi’s Luisa Miller at San Carlo Theater While not performed as often, the work is considered by some critics to be among the top five of the many operas by the composer from Le Roncole di Bussetto in northern Italy. It was written under contract to San Carlo and first performed here in Naples in 1849. The plot contains the complex love story of Luisa (daughter of a retired soldier) and Rodolfo (a disguised son of the Count) which includes a jealous boyfriend (Wurm) and Count Walter (who murdered his cousin to get the job). It’s a classic love dilemma – Luisa loves Rodolfo who loves her back, but Wurm also loves Luisa and plots to get her away. To further complicate matters, Count Walter wants Rodolfo to marry his niece, Federica, Duchess of Ostheim. Watch how the story is resolved through soaring arias, numerous duets and heart-rending melodies that are part of Verdi’s signature. The opera will be performed May 5-10 at the San Carlo Theater. For bookings and details, visit http://www.teatrosancarlo.it/ or call 081-797-2331 or 2412. Art Andy Warhol and Comicon Lovers of Contemporary Art rejoice this month for the scheduling of “Comicon,” the international show of comics and cartoon art at the Mostra d’Oltremare (Overseas Exhibition Fair) through May 3. Comicon aims to liberate comics as mere entertainment for the young, by showcasing it as an art form in Naples, increasingly in the spotlight as an Italian Contemporary Art center. Mostra d’Oltremare, near the Campi Flegrei metro station, is adjacent to Naples’ San Paolo soccer stadium in Fuorigrotta. Exhibition details at http://wwww.comicon.it Nearly 40 Andy Warhol works are exhibited at the Vulcano Buono Shopping Center, the largest shopping center in Nola. Famous for Campbell Soup, Marilyn Monroe and other celebrity paintings, the Pittsburgh, Pa., native artist needs no introduction. His legacy is breaking down barriers between high culture and popular taste by turning mundane objects into artistic themes. Warhol is a favorite of Neapolitans for his paintings of Vesuvius, done to raise money for area earthquake victims in the 1980s. Exhibit runs through May 17. Buon divertimento!

JOBS from page 1 “We challenged folks to ask themselves one simple question: ‘What can I do to honor these families who have given us so much?’ And we were overwhelmed by the response we received.” Private Sector’s Contribution Shortly after Joining Forces was launched, President Barack Obama also challenged the private sector to hire 100,000 veterans and military spouses, the first lady said. Now, less than four years later, “America’s businesses have continued to race past my husband’s initial goal, and together, those businesses who answered the president’s call have hired or trained more than 850,000 veterans and military spouses,” she said. Additionally, federal government hiring produced a workforce that now comprises 30 percent veterans, the first lady said. By making a commitment to hire veterans and military spouses, such companies are shining examples of what’s possible, the she said. Producing Results for Veterans, Spouses “Altogether, the unemployment rate for post-9/11 veterans has fallen by almost five points. And for those youngest veterans, it’s been cut by almost half from its peak,” the first lady said. As companies hired veterans and military spouses, they learned about the skill, character and resilience that “define our veterans and military spouses,” she said. “Veterans and spouses were excelling in their companies … getting promotion after promotion and inspiring their colleagues with their talent and with their determination,” the first lady said. During today’s announcement, the first lady pointed out that the technology and energy sectors are driving national economic growth. “These are industries full of good, high-paying positions where our vets can continue to thrive for years and even decades to come,” she said. And because the solar industry is “adding jobs 10 times faster that the rest of the economy,” the first lady said, President Obama earlier this month announced “a significant expansion of our successful pilot program to train transitioning service members for careers in solar jobs.” To make sure there’s a job waiting for veterans when they leave the military, the Solar Energy Industries Association is pledging to hire or train 33,000 veterans and spouses over the next five years, she added. Companies Commit To Training “These companies know that many of the jobs they’re hiring for require specialized training,” the first lady said. “So in many cases, they’re not just hiring these veterans; they’re actually partnering with a variety of educational institutions to create internships and apprenticeships and job-training programs.” Micron is in a pilot program through the Northern Virginia Technology Council to match student veterans at local institutions of higher learning to 50 high-tech companies throughout the area, she said. “Veterans get hands-on experience and the companies connect with a pipeline of top-notch talent,” the first lady said. That kind of win-win partnership is one of many across the country helping veterans and military spouses, she added. Joining Forces: Long-term Commitment While the first lady called her announcement an amazing accomplishment, she added that more work is required. “And that includes connecting our vets not just with any job, but with good jobs – jobs you can raise a family on, the kind of high-growth jobs of the future,” she said. And today, Obama said she’s calling on all companies across the nation in every industry and of every size “to do their part to provide even more opportunities for our military families.” The first lady added, “Keep asking yourselves that same question we posed four years ago: ‘What can I do to give back to our veterans and their families?’ Can you make a commitment, or another [one] to hire more veterans and military spouses? Can you partner with a local school or veterans service organization on job-training opportunities? There are so many ways you can make a difference, whether you’re a multinational namebrand, or a startup that’s just getting off the ground.” The first lady praised the veterans, transitioning service members and military spouses in the audience. “I can’t thank you enough. This nation can’t thank you enough for your service. What you do is rare. What you do is needed. What you do is special. And I want you to know that we’re nowhere near the finish line,” she said. “Joining Forces is a long-term commitment to you and to your families, and we’re going to do whatever we can to serve you as well as you’ve served us.”
