NCTS Volunteers Help Spread Holiday Cheer By IT1 (IDW/SW/AW) Sherri D. Hill

Five volunteers from Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station (NCTS) Naples visited children at the Centro Laila Orphanage at Castel Volturno, Naples, Italy, November 14, 2015. The volunteers headed out there to spread some holiday cheer to the children. The NCTS Sailors participated in several events to include arts and craft activities, and coloring holiday pictures that were later displayed on the wall in the auditorium, for the children to enjoy. They also helped the children decorate holiday ornaments which they later placed on a Christmas tree, which was donated by the volunteers. This is just the first visit in coordination with the command’s Angel Tree Project for 2015. While at the orphanage, Sailors took down the names of each child to bring back and place on the command’s Angel Tree. Military, civilians and contractors participating in this year’s Angel Tree Project will do so by remov-

location at NCTS. The NCTS First Class Petty Officer’s Association will later dress up in holiday costumes and make a special delivery to the

orphanage on December 10. They’ll then have the opportunity to spend a few more hours enjoying holiday activities with the children.

United States Stands With France in Wake of Attacks From DoD News

The United States stands with France in the wake of today’s terrorist attacks in Paris, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said. “This evening’s horrific and barbaric attacks in Paris were more than an attack on the nation or people of France,” Carter said in a statement. “They were an assault on our common human dignity.” Estimates of the number of people killed vary in reports, but range in the dozens. Carter noted the close relationship between the United States and France, including their roles in the NATO alliance and in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. “As NATO allies, as leaders of the counter-ISIL coalition, as nations working shoulder to shoulder from West Africa to the Indian Ocean, the United States and France will only strengthen our resolve,” the secretary said. Earlier, President Barack Obama pledged U.S. assistance to French authorities and vowed to join France and other nations to bring the terrorists to justice and to “go after any terrorist networks that go after our people.” FRANCE Page 11

CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Doug Carpenter NSA Naples Commanding Officer

Thanksgiving is coming next week, and most of us will celebrate over a turkey dinner with family, friends, and special guests. Thanksgiving is a uniquely American holiday; a tradition rooted in our past that remembers the hard times experienced by the first settlers and honors the teamwork that allowed the colony to thrive. It’s a time to give thanks and reflect on events over the past year. A family accomplishment, our great friends, an inspirational leader, the cultural opportunities at our doorstep, or the supportive and volunteer oriented community found right here at NSA Naples. Personally, I am thankful for my wonderful family, the opportunity to serve overseas, and the many hardworking people – military and civilian, American and Italian who make NSA Naples a great place to live and work. Thanksgiving is associated with spending time with family, loved ones, and friends, but our community’s commitment to security does not always make it possible. There are many personnel who are here away from their families, or who will be standing the watch on Thanksgiving Day. A number of organizations offer programs and dinners for those spending Thanksgiving away from family and friends. The Naval Hospital teamed up with the NSA Chaplains and chapel volunteer groups and hosted a great dinner Thursday evening at “La Cucina,” and the USO and MWR are joining forces to host a Thanksgiving Dinner for unaccompanied active duty members on November 26, at O’Rhys Pub on support site from noon to 2 p.m. The Sailor adoption program is another way for the community to support Sailors away from home, and it’s a good opportunity for those families looking to add another relative! The Capo liberty center is taking the lead on connecting families with the single and unaccompanied service members. And what would the holiday season be without the annual Support Site tree lighting? This year the event is scheduled for December 4, and will feature a wellknown, and very jolly superstar, along with a few shopping opportunities from holiday minded vendors who will be located in the plaza. So come out to gather with the community, celebrate the holiday spirit, and help to welcome the winter season. On a more serious note, considering the recent attacks and scares in France and throughout Europe, I want all community members to stay up to date with the latest security guidance, and please register for the AtHoc/CDNS emergency notification system. We continue to streamline and improve the way AtHoc messages are delivered, but despite some quirks it remains the best and fastest way to get critical information to our community. Also, please keep in mind the practice of “See Something Suspicious Say Something Immediately” (S5I). Don’t hesitate to call Emergency Dispatch to report suspicious activities or packages. Bringing this information to the attention of authorities may prevent catastrophe. Please use caution while traveling abroad, keep your leadership aware of your destinations, and always have a communication plan. Enjoy the weekend, and help keep the base looking good by recycling and taking care of our trash!

Vacationing Boy Finds World War II U.S. Soldier’s Dog Tag This summer a young boy on holiday with his family found a dog tag belonging to a U.S. soldier near the coastal town of Nettuno, Italy, located about 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of Rome. The young soldier had died in World War II during the early stages of the Battle of Anzio in 1944. Esquipula Roybal, 22, was never recovered from the water, according to U.S. military records. The boy’s mother didn’t know what to do with the dog tag, so she posted a picture of it on her Facebook page. A friend living in the United States offered to help her find Roybal’s relatives. They obtained a list of telephone numbers for all the Roybals listed near Penasco, New Mexico, and started making phone calls. She found a 78-year-old man, the nephew of the American soldier, who was very surprised to hear about his uncle after more than 70 years since his death at Anzio. The dog tag was sent to Roybal family in a purple velvet case with a thank you note to Roybal for what he did for Italy. The young boy who found the dog tag wrote that Roybal was a hero, because the soldier protected the people of Italy and gave his life for his country.

NAVY HISTORY: USS ENTERPRISE COMMISSIONED

From U.S. Navy

The Navy’s eighth ship to bear the name Enterprise became the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier when she was commissioned on November 25, 1961, at Newport News, Virginia. In 1954, Congress authorized the construction of the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the eighth U.S. ship to bear the name Enterprise. USS Enterprise (CVN 65), the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, commemorates a name that has been a continuing symbol of the great struggle to retain American liberty, justice and freedom since the first days of the American Revolutionary War. It is the eighth ship of the fleet to carry this illustrious name that is literally defined as boldness, energy and invention in practical affairs. The giant ship was powered by eight nuclear reactors, two for each of its four propeller shafts. This was a

daring undertaking; never before had two nuclear reactors ever been harnessed together. As such, when the engineers first started planning the ship’s propulsion system, they were uncertain how it would work, or even if it would work according to their theories. Materials used by the shipyard included 60,923 tons of steel; 1507 tons of aluminum; 230 miles of pipe and tubing; and 1700 tons of one-quarter-inch welding rods. The materials were supplied from more than 800 companies. Nine hundred shipyard engineers and designers created the ship on paper, and the millions of blueprints they created, laid end-to-end, would stretch 2,400 miles, equivalent to the distance from Miami to Los Angeles. After years of planning and work by thousands the day finally arrived. At her commissioning, then-Secretary of the Navy John B. Connally Jr. called it a worthy successor to the highly decorated seventh USS En-

terprise of World War II. “The fighting Gray Lady, as it was called, served in such well-known battles as the raid on Tokyo and the Battle of Midway,” Connally said. “The new Enterprise will reign a long, long time as queen of the seas.” His words would ring true. More than 100,000 Sailors and Marines served aboard Enterprise during her 51 years of service, and she has been home ported in both Alameda, California, and Norfolk, Virginia. Enterprise set many records and milestones: She was the longest warship ever put to sea, and during sea trials, she exceeded 40 knots. Later, she became the first nuclear carrier to transit the Suez Canal and

the first carrier to operate the new F-14 Tomcats. A veteran of 25 deployments to the Mediterranean Sea, Pacific Ocean, and the Middle East, Enterprise has served in nearly every major conflict to take place during her history. From the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 to six deployments in support of the Vietnam conflict through the Cold War and the Gulf Wars, Enterprise was there. On September 11, 2001, Enterprise aborted her

transit home from a long deployment after the terrorist attacks, and steamed overnight to the North Arabian Sea. Big 'E' once again took her place in history when she launched the first strikes in direct support of Operation Enduring Fredom. After 25 deployments around the world and 51 years of active service, Enterprise was officially deactivated December 1, 2012, at Naval Base Norfolk, Virginia.

SPOTLIGHT: SGT. JENNYLYS RIVERA

USO Naples would like to extend our congratulations to our Fall 2015 USO Naples Volunteer of the Quarter and USO Europe Volunteer of the Quarter, Army Sgt. Jennylys Rivera. “Sergeant sent me. She told me it’s the right thing for me,” is a statement echoed at USO Naples by many new volunteer recruits who have spoken with Rivera. Rivera who is a leader in her unit and at USO Naples has been indispensable at strengthening USO Naples relationship with the U.S. Army detachments at locations nearby. She collaborated with the Italian Air Force and the units at Grazzanise to arrange

for the USO to bring their mobile unit to serve an American style barbecue to the troops stationed there. Thanks to her efforts more than 100 troops enjoyed an afternoon of free food and fun. In the past year Rivera has volunteered at 40 events, including 14 during the past three months. She shares her infectious spirit of appreciation to all fellow service members, volunteers, and Italians. As she says, “I do, because of the USO.” “Rivera has sat with a young soldier, encouraging them to take their liberty to get out and explore Naples and Rome; during the USO Summer Story Time, she read stories in character voices and led the young military children in games; and in preparation for the USO Dodge Ball Tournament, Rivera encouraged junior and senior soldiers to join teams and participate,” USO Naples Program and Volunteer Coordinator Shannon McCaulley said. Rivera’s encouragement to get others involved through participating and volunteering at USO events has expanded USO Naples reach to serve our troops wherever they are. Rivera is an outstanding individual, worthy of the representing the region as USO Europe Volunteer of the Quarter.

Naples Tiger Sharks Victorious in Back-to-Back Meets By Lyndsey Hale Naples Tiger Sharks PR

The Naples Tiger Sharks emerged victorious in back-toback meets this past weekend against Aviano November 14 and Vicenza November 15. “I was super proud of all the swimmers who came out this weekend ready to bring it in both Aviano and Vicenza; especially in Aviano being outnumbered and at a hard pool to swim in, Anna Zick, a Tiger Sharks team captain, said. “If we keep it up I think we have a huge chance at Southern Division Champs.” With the outstanding showing, the Tiger Sharks had 12 swimmers who qualified for the European Forces Swim League (EFSL) Championship meet in Eindhoven, Netherlands, February 27-28, 2016, and seven swimmers who qualified for the upcoming EFSL Long Distance Championship meet, which will be held at Lignano, Italy over Thanksgiving weekend. The European Forces Swim League is an outgrowth of Forces, NATO and European Communities’ swim teams throughout Europe. “Great sportsmanship, awesome team work, and a lot of fast swimming is what it all came down to this past weekend. The team knew they had to be put forth their best effort as the Vicenza Mako Sharks have a growing team, which made the meets this weekend challenging and definitely more exciting,” Tiger Sharks Head Coach Jane Higgins

said. “Unfortunately we must say goodbye to Anna and Alaina Zick, they swam their last two meets with the team this weekend. They both have seen a tremendous amount of improvement over the years, and the team could always count on them to help where they were needed.” The weekend’s ‘Biggest Losers,’ which are the swimmers who see the most time improvement in their Pentathlon (the IM and the butterfly, back, breast stroke and freestyle) events were: Sarah Mcarthy (11.05 seconds), Jonathan McDonough (10.7 seconds), Katrina King (10.94 seconds) and Gabriel Rayos (9.79 seconds). The “Swimmer of the Meet at Aviano was John Ruppe, and at Vicenza was Jordan Traucht. “The coaches are seeing a lot of great effort and improvement from John this season, his attention to stroke technique had him finishing at the top in his age division this weekend in all of his

events,” Higgins said. “Jordan enjoys the challenge of staying at the top of his age division, which only drives him to go faster and continually see time improvement in his events, and he finished up this weekend with first places in all his events, qualifying in both the 200FR and 200IM.” Swimmers who took first places in their individual events, were: Andrew Carlos, Francis Carlos, Kaden Carpenter, Abigail Driskell, Robert Dromerhauser, Katrina King, McKenzie Gibel, James McDonough, Jonathon McDonough, Brandon Oestereicher, Brooke Ralston, Ryan Rayos, Alejandra Ruppe, John Ruppe, Carly Sharp, Lindsey Sharp, John Sherer, Nick Sherer, Jordan Traught, Leslie Traucht, Nathan Traught, Stephen Traucht, Joey Vinch, Anastasia Yniguez and Anna Zick. The mission of the Navy and Marine Corps is to provide the global presence necessary to ensure stability, to deter potential adversaries, and to present options in times of crisis. Access to secure, reliable energy and water is critical to our ability to provide that presence. Establishing energy and water security is vital to reaching these goals. As a force we must create a culture that implements techniques and the latest technology to improve the efficiency of our everyday uses of energy and water. That is why we are transforming our culture, diversifying our supplies, and optimizing our use of energy and water to ensure that we have access to the resources we need, when and where we need them. The Secretary of the Navy awards those installations that demonstrate superior performance in water and energy conservation efforts. We have made great progress on those goals and Energy Action Month is our opportunity to recognize Sailors, Marines, and Department of the Navy civilians who have led the way. NSA Naples has been awarded the Gold level SECNAV FY15 Energy and Water Management Award. Gold Level of achievement indicates a very good to outstanding energy or water program. As the new Fiscal year begins we should continue to strive for success and constantly implement ways to improve water and energy usage on all installations in order to better support our missions.

BIG VOICE from page 1 If the project receives funding the existing speakers will be replaced with new much more powerful versions. “Right now the speakers are little 15 watt ones,” SPAWAR project lead Adrian Salas said. “What we are proposing to do is put in 400 watt omni-directional speakers, so rather than just firing in one direction, the sound will travel much further and in every direction.” The proposed system update would improve clarity, volume and enable simultaneous broadcast of messages across all of the installation’s campuses. The recommended solution includes a direct link between Support Site, Capodichino and Carney Park that would eliminate the existing delay in message transmissions across the sites and improve accuracy of the information passed. The team spent two weeks visiting all NSA Naples sites inspecting the locations of the current speakers to find the most appropriate locations for the new speakers. Salas explained that the location and placement of the speakers is important so that people can clearly hear whatever important message and directions the command needs to pass to our community.

A team from the Space and Naval Warfare (SPAWAR) Systems Command Pacific (SSC Pacific) and staff visited Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples to conduct a site survey and to discuss a proposed update to the area’s Big Voice system, November 13. Photo by Emily Donovan

“The existing speakers receive transmissions through a limited line-of-sight receiver, such that a tree in the path could interrupt the current signal; while the proposed solution should function with something as a large as a building within the transmission path. Technical issues and sound quality are not the only thing the proposed changes would solve: The update should also reduce maintenance man hours and cost, Lt. Steamboat Rock, The team’s subject matter expert, explained. “Right now there are over 120 speakers in the area. We want to reduce that

number by at least 40 percent,” Rock said. “If we cut those numbers down we will effectively reduce maintenance hours and save the site money” Outfitting the bases with this new technology will be no easy feat, however. The Big Voice retrofit will require regional approval and future year funds for the installation. It will all be worth it though says the team. “The bases we’ve already outfitted with this system note significant improvement over the system currently installed,” Rock said. “We’ve heard a lot of positive feedback.”

The First Thanksgiving Feast By Emily Donovan NSA Public Affairs

When you hear the word Thanksgiving, what do you think of? For many people the answer is “turkey” or “pumpkin pie,” but the truth is it’s unlikely that either of those Thanksgiving staples were at the first feast. So what did they eat? The first Thanksgiving was held in 1621 to mark the Pilgrims’ first harvest with help from their Wampanoag neighbors. Historical documents state that before the feast the Pilgrims went out hunting for “fowl” which were plentiful there in autumn. This could have included ducks, geese, and even swans. The Native Americans brought an offering of five deer, which could be roasted over an open fire. There was also an abundance of fresh seafood in the area, and it’s believed to have comprised most of the meat at the first Thanksgiving. Of course there were plenty of vegetables, including pumpkins, but at the time there

was no butter or wheat flower for making crust. It’s likely that the closest thing to pumpkin pie they had was custard made inside a hollowed out pumpkin. They still got to spend the day with their families, feasting and making merry right? Well, not exactly. The only eye witness account said there was “some 90 men” in attendance. It was said to be a gathering to guarantee a military alliance between the Wampanoags and the Pilgrims. It’s likely the English women were doing the cooking. It wasn’t just a dinner they were making either. The first Thanksgiving lasted for three whole days. Even though the origins are the holiday are different than most people remember, the fact remains that the Pilgrims made it through a tough time thanks to some help from the Wampanoags. They joined together with their friends to give thanks for what they had, and in that respect, their traditions weren’t so different from ours.
