CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Doug Carpenter NSA Naples Commanding Officer

Last Thursday Security placed the Support Site on alert after we received a telephonic bomb threat. Thanks to the quick action of our Security, Fire and Emergency Management teams, we were able to evacuate the Navy Exchange and Commissary complex in a timely and orderly manner and conduct a thorough sweep of the structures and parking lots with Military Working Dogs (MWD). The MWD team found no threats or suspicious devices during the sweep of the installation. In close coordination with the Carabinieri and NCIS, we are working very hard to determine who initiated the phone call. I take these threats to our community very seriously and you will see a professional and clear response each and every time. When you see our first responders around the base, please take the time to recognize them for the very tough jobs they do protecting the community 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Shortly after the event we received a number of concerns about the clarity of our Giant Voice public announcement system. Fortunately, it alerted everyone who heard it that something was going on. Unfortunately, it was unable to convey exactly what was going on due to the poor acoustics of speakers. We’ve been working on this problem for some time now, and we have a team coming in to help us improve the clarity of the system. In addition to Giant Voice, we have a multi-layered system to inform the community of emergency events. First and foremost are our first responders who take direct action at the scene. Please always follow the instructions of our first responders. We also maintain active communications through Facebook and post near real time information on our official NSA Naples page. Finally, we push this information through our CDNS/AtHOC system, which is available for sign-up. Email emogroup@eu.navy.mil for the sign-up sheet and any further information required. To get more information, such as the PAO notes, contact the Public Affairs office either through our Facebook page, or directly via email at pao_naples@eu.navy.mil. This week the Chief of Naval Personnel visited the installation to kick off his tour of the Region’s naval capabilities. He spoke directly to our sailors and addressed concerns and questions regarding the future of the Navy in terms of force strength, benefits programs, and orders selection. Next week the Chief of Naval Operations is visiting NSA Naples and he will also hold an all hands call. The CNO will answer questions concerning the future of the Navy as an operational force as well as any questions concerning current operations and threats. Additionally, the CNO will host a separate town hall for all spouses October 21 at the Support Site movie theater from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. It will be a great opportunity to have your voice heard at the outset of Adm. Richardson’s tour as our 31st Chief of Naval Operations. If you were fortunate enough to be at Capo on Tuesday afternoon you might have heard the Joint Forces Europe band performing for the Navy’s 240th birthday. They had a great performance and it was inspirational to hear them play for a joint U.S.-Italian audience. The theme for the Navy’s 240th birthday is, “Ready then, ready now, ready always.” Please enjoy the weekend and drive safe!

5 NAVY HISTORY: FLEET AND FAMILY SUPPORT MARINES RECAPTURE HARPERS FERRY CENTER EVENTS THIS WEEK October 16, 2015

From the U.S. Naval Academy Public Affairs

On the night of October 16, 1859, abolitionist John Brown and a band of 21 men raided an Army Armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, with the purpose of sparking a slave revolt. Brown hoped the local slave population would join him, and that weapons seized from the armory would be supplied to slaves and freedom fighters throughout the country. Brown’s raiders easily overpowered the night watchman and they captured the arsenal, taking 40 hostages, which were held in the armory’s heavily-fortified engine house. When workers arrived the next morning, they learned the armory had been seized. They quickly spread the alarm, and within hours the armory was surrounded by local militia, which exchanged ineffective gunfire with Brown’s raiders. Learning of the situation that same morning, Secretary of War John B. Floyd ordered 86 Marines from the Marine Barracks at 8th and “I” in Washington, D.C., to depart immediately by train for Harpers Ferry. Their orders were simple: Capture Brown and save the hostages.

Under the command of Army Col. Robert E. Lee and led by Marine Lt. Israel Green, the Marines arrived at the armory later that afternoon. At dawn on October 18, Lee´s aid, Army Lt. J.E.B. Stuart, offered to accept Brown´s surrender. Brown refused the offer. A Civil War-era The Marines attacked Marine Corps logo the engine house, defeating the raiders and capturing Brown. One Marine, Private Luke Quinn, lost his life in the raid. Severely wounded, but surviving the attack, Brown was captured. He was tried and sentenced to death in a weeklong trial for murder, inciting insurrection and treason against the State of Virginia. His sentence was perceived by many as an act of martyrdom, which further polarized the nation. Brown was hanged on December 2, 1859.

ENERGY CONSERVATION SPOTLIGHT: THAIS ST. MARTIN

Fuel Conservation From the NSA Naples Energy Management Team

Thais St. Martin is a military spouse who goes above and beyond as a volunteer for USO Naples. Hailing from Costa Mesa, California, she has only been volunteering with the USO since May 2015, and has already given more than 70 hours at 30 events, including the USO Summer Story Times, Hot Doggin’ Tuesdays, Spouse Coffees, After School Snack Attacks and many, many special events. While some her of favorite moments were spent engaging young military children during Story Time and at the Sesame Street Show, St. Martin believes in supporting the military community. “I chose to volunteer with the USO as a way to give back to the military community for all that they have done for myself and my family,” St. Martin said. “It can be difficult moving around

so much, particularly overseas, and the USO helped to make the transition just a little easier. I enjoy helping the families new to the Naples area ‘learn the ropes’ and to learn to love it here as much as we do.” In addition to her time with USO Naples, St. Martin and her husband enjoy helping out with the Naples Installations Recreation Committee (NIRC) as they prepare for the annual Command Summer Picnic and Christmas Party. “My husband also volunteers when he can, and it is a nice way to spend some time together and to help our community at the same time,” St. Martin said. If you are interested in volunteering with the USO, email sabrina.pullido@uso.it or stop their office at the air terminal on board Capodichino.

It is that time of year again to amplify awareness and celebrate Energy Action Month. This week we will take the discuss fuel conservation. Why is fuel conservation important? One reason is because not all fuels are renewable. This means we should use them as sparingly as possible and find alternative sources of energy because once these resources are depleted we will not be able to obtain them again. There are several technological advances being utilized today in an effort to conserve fuel. In addition to having a limited supply, some fuels are harmful to the environment. Fuel cells produce electrical power without any combustion and operate on fuels like hydrogen, natural gas and propane. They are a clean alternative to gasoline-powered generators. Fuel Saving Tips ● Drive smoothly. Slowing down gradually, rather than jamming on the brakes, then accelerating slowly can save you as much as two miles per gallon. ● When driving on the highway, use your cruise control to maintain a steady speed. ● Remove unnecessary heavy items from your car. Every 100 pounds extra costs you about half a mile per gallon. ● Ride a bike – or walk – to work, to the local neighborhood store or to a nearby friend’s home. Total vehicle emissions are reduced to zero. ● Don’t start your car until you’re ready to move; idling engines waste gas. If you are idling for more than one minute turn the engine off. ● You can improve your gas mileage by 1 to 2 percent by using the manufacturer’s recommended grade of motor oil.

Naples Tiger Sharks Return Victorious From Sigonella

Tiger Sharks Brandon Oestereicher was a Pentathlon first place winner at this past weekend’s Double Dip Swim Meet at Sigonella. Photo by Jason Markvart By Lyndsey Hale

Two days of intense back-to-back competition and crazy weather changes – including rolling thunderstorms – weren’t enough to keep the Naples Tiger Sharks from victory in Sigonella this past weekend at the Double Dip Swim Meet The Tiger Sharks also achieved the highest overall team scores. Fifty Tiger Sharks traveled down to Sicily to compete against Sigonella, Aviano, Kaiserlautern, Vicenza and Wiesbaden. The Naples Tiger Sharks took first place in four categories on Saturday, even though the event was delayed multiple times due to thunder and lightning, this was a Pentathlon Competition where each swimmer competed in all five pen-

tathlon events to win. Then on Sunday the Naples Tiger Sharks continued to dominate the meet with 35 first places, 37 second places and great over all team points. “The team really stepped up to the blocks this past weekend with many swimmers challenging themselves by swimming one or more new events, and 91% setting new personal bests even as the weather proved to be a challenge,” Coach Jane Higgins said. “Mentally and physically I know that these back to back meets are great practice for what is to come when we head up to Champs for a two day meet in Eindhoven at the end of the season. The Pentathlon is no easy feat in itself; our swimmers must swim all five strokes

without any disqualifications to be in the running for the award. We had 19 swimmers up on the podium this weekend receiving Pentathlon awards. I couldn’t be prouder of our Naples Tiger Sharks.” The Swimmer of the Meet for Saturday was Ryan Rayos, who took first place in the Pentathlon on Saturday and also continued with first places in all his events on Sunday. “Ryan had a fantastic meet, scoring the highest points on the team,” Higgins said. “He not only excelled at this meet but he did so with outstanding sportsmanship.” The ‘Swimmer of the Meet’ for Sunday was Jonathon McDonough, who qualified for finals in both the 50 and 100 meter freestyle events. He was also a high point scorer for the team. “Jonathan is one of the younger swimmers on the team this season and this meet was all business for Jonathan, no messing around he was on a mission to qualify,” Higgins said The Naples Tiger Sharks Pentathlon winners were: Ryan Rayos, Brandon Oestereicher, Stephen Traucht and Alex Ruppe. Swimmers who took first places in their individual events on Sunday were: Trenton Butler, Andrew Carlos, Kaden

Carpenter, Annie Driskell, McKenzie Gibel, Sydney Hale, Christopher Kanak, Jackson Layton, James McDonough, Jonathon McDonough, Brandon Ostereicher, Ryan Rayos, Caroline Ross, Alejandra Ruppe, Carly Sharp, John Sherer, Maria Sherer, Noah Sherer, Jordan Traught, Leslie Traucht, Nathan Traucht, Callie Van Dyke, and Joey Vinch.

For swimmers like Alex Ruppe this meet wasn’t just about swimming and winning but about connecting with other swimmers from other DOD region schools when she was asked what the best thing about the meet was Alex said “it was wonderful to see her friend from Vicenza.” The Naples Tiger Sharks next swim meet will be the weekend of October 24.

The movie-goers enjoyed a meal and fellowship before viewing the movie. The movie is about a couple, who seems to have it all; great jobs and a beautiful family. However, husband, Tony, flirts with temptation, while his wife, Elizabeth, becomes increasingly bitter as she sees their marriage disintegrating. Their lives take an unexpected, but positive, turn, when Elizabeth is encouraged to find happiness through prayer. Photo by Cmdr. Don Biadog Jr.

SECRETARY OF DEFENSE from page 1 Before concluding his visit, Secretary Carter expressed his gratitude, and that of the American people, for the tireless efforts of the service members in their defense of the U.S. and its interests. Against a backdrop of unpredictable threats posed from Russia, China and North Korea, he underscored the importance of maintaining and strengthening ties with partner nations, such as Italy, and reflected on the centrality of this part of the world. “The ‘Hub of the Med’ is more than just a slogan. This is an assignment that has always been important, but whose importance has only grown steadily over the last few years,” Carter said. “It is a reflection of the imporatnce of what you are doing. You are not only the Hub of the Med – you are the hub of the change in mission sets.” NAS Sigonella Commanding Officer Capt. Chris Dennis, echoed the Defense Secretary’s praise, remarking on how once again the community had come together to host yet another impressive high-level DV visit. “Don’t just take my word for it,” Dennis said. “The Secretary of Defense, our ambassador, Rear Adm. Scorby, and all the staff involved praise your efforts. Every one of our members directly or indirectly contributed to a very successful day.” Following his visit to NAS Sigonella, Carter will attend the NATO Defense Ministerial Conference in Brussels and meet with counterparts in the United Kingdom.

Crisis Line Specialist Helps Fellow Veterans By Shannon Collins DoD News

For one combat veteran, his job can be as simple as listening to a service member or veteran who needs someone to talk to. But sometimes, his job is to assist somebody who may be suicidal. Jeffrey Swafford, a former Air Force staff sergeant, is a health science specialist with the Veterans Crisis Line here. He said active-duty service members, National Guardsmen, reservists, veterans and their family members and friends can call, text or chat online with him or any of his co-workers confidentially 24 hours a day, seven days a week, just to talk or if they need more serious help, such as suicide prevention. “We’re here to help,” Swafford said. “Even if you want to call, and it’s 10 to 15 minutes of it being nothing but you talking and me just sitting there listening, that’s one of the things we’re here for, too. We’re always here. You can always call us. It doesn’t matter if it’s 2 a.m. We’re here to talk. We’re here to help.” “Whether you’re an Iraqi veteran or a Korean War veteran or a Vietnam veteran, we will help you,” he said. “We can help you get connected with the resources that you’re looking for and that you need. You’re not going through this alone. You’ve always got somebody here who you can talk to.” Wanting to Help Swafford said he left the Air Force after serving for eight years as a security forces specialist with multiple deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait and Kyrgyzstan. He knew he still wanted to help service members and veterans, he added, so he began his work

at the Veterans Crisis Line. “I really felt as if it was something I would be able to help with and I would be able to give back to in some way,” he said. “I really enjoy helping and giving back, helping service members and veterans.” Swafford said callers often ask to speak with veterans because of the instant connection service members have with one another. Because of his own post-traumatic stress from operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, his work can be challenging, he acknowledged. But he puts the callers’ concerns first, he said, and he shares with them some of his coping techniques. “I tell them, ‘You need to find something that’s yours and yours only,’” he said. “It could be ‘Every evening, I need to go by myself and walk for an hour or go play golf, work out, [go] fishing, hunting or camping, just something that doesn’t have to be with anybody else,’” he said. “You can go do it by yourself, or if it makes you feel more comfortable to be with somebody, do that as well, but you need to find what’s yours, what your comfort place is that will allow you the ability to cope and to relax and to get yourself back in a right frame of mind.” He said his own stress occasionally gets triggered, but helping others is more important. “A lot of the callers are mentioning the exact same bases I was at when I was in,” he said. “When they talk about mortars and explosions going off, it makes me think, ‘I went through some of those, too,’ so some of the stories will trigger some things at times. But after the call, I’ll just take an extra three or four minutes and get up and clear my head, because when the phone rings, I’ve got

to be ready to go right back at it. I’ve got to be in the right frame of mind that I can take that call with no problem.” Why it Matters On many of his calls, Swafford said, he could almost see “that little light bulb go off in their head, and you just hear that breaking point where they’re finally just like taking a deep calming breath and saying, ‘OK, I can do this,’” he said. “First, it’s taken so much out of them just to reach out and admit they need help, because they’re worried it will make them look weak, which isn’t the case.” Sometimes, Swafford said, people will call back in gratitude and to say they’ve made appointments to get help. “Those are the times where it really feels like we’re really making a difference,” he said. Training Swafford said the specialists learn how to direct calls and how to keep the conversations flowing. He said they spend an extended period of time with seasoned responders before they start taking calls themselves and will not start on their own until they feel ready to do so. “No two calls you get are going to be exactly the same, so you’ve really got to be prepared

for anything when that phone rings,” the Etowah, Tennessee, native said. “It can be anything from somebody just wanting to talk to somebody who is suicidal [and] may have already attempted. It could be a number of things. Worst-case scenario, a veteran could call in and state they have a gun, they’re ready to use it, they have nothing to live for and you try talking to them and you hear them chamber a round. What can I say to bring them to a safe place? “I let them dictate the way the conversation goes, find that common bond, let them know they’re OK, that everything’s fine, that I’m there to help them, and that I’m there for that support,” he continued. “I listen in on key things they may like to do and focus in on that. A lot of times, that helps out tremendously.” Resources Swafford said the Veterans Crisis Line specialists will provide callers with resources in their area, whether it is on installations for service members or at Veterans Affairs Department facilities for veterans. “For many active-duty service members who call in, they worry about losing their security clearances or jobs for just calling in,” he said. “You’re not going to. Michigan Farmer Finds Woolly Mammoth Bones in Soy Field By Emily Donovan

When Michigan bean farmer James Bristle and his friend dug a trench in a field to lay a drainage pipe, they were just trying to move some dirt. Instead they found something incredible. Under the earth was a rare mammoth skeleton, one of only about thirty to be found in Michigan. “We knew it was something that was out of the norm,” Bristle said. Bristle contacted University of Michigan professor Dan Fisher who confirmed that it was a mammoth skeleton and soon a team of paleontologists and students from the University Of Michigan arrived to begin excavating the site. Fisher says that the specimen appears to be a Jefferson Mammoth a crossbreed of the more wellknown Wooly Mammoth, and the Columbian Mammoth which arrived to North America as far back as 1.7 million years ago. With the help of special excavation equipment the volunteers were able to unearth the entire skull, tusks, the pelvis, and parts of the creature’s vertebrae.

Due to the discovery of three large boulders next to the mammoth’s skull, it is believed to have been killed for food as much as 15,000 years ago by ancient humans and sunk in a pond for storage, although more research will need to take place before scientists can say for sure. While the bones were still in his possession Bristle received upwards of 200 people a day hoping to see the site, or catch a glimpse of the mammoth itself. “My grandson came over to look at it,” Bristle said, “he’s 5-years-old, he was speechless.” Bristle has agreed to donate the specimen to the University of Michigan for further research and display.
