The American Red Cross Naples recently held its first pet first aid class aboard Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples Aug. 21. The class offered a way for participants to learn more about how to adequately care for their pets in the event of a medical emergency or natural disaster. “I like to know that I can be the first responder in a pet emergency,” said Nicky Mormino, who runs her own dog-sitting business in Naples. “This course has given me the tools, knowledge and confidence now to do that comfortably.” The course is designed to teach participants life saving skills for cats and dogs, including performing CPR, rescue breathing, care for choking, emergency poison care, wound care and much more. Participants also learned how to create pet emergency kits that, in addition to bandages, gauze and antibiotics, include pet medications and other necessities. “Having a first aid kit for your family and one for your pets is the
first step,” said Chief Mass Communication Specialist (SW/ AW) Jason Morris, American Red Cross Naples volunteer instructor and health and safety chair. “Another big step is having an emergency disaster kit on standby in case a need arises. You cannot plan when a disaster or an emergency will happen, but you can plan your response.” This was the first class of many that the American Red Cross Naples hopes to offer if community interest maintains. Classes will be held on a bi-monthly basis and will cost $35. “While this is the first class we have taught here in Naples, I believe the course is important,” said Morris. “Every dog or cat owner will tell you how much they love their pet and would do almost anything for them. Knowing how to save their life in an emergency just makes sense.” The course is open to all U.S. service members, civilians, retirees and families. Mormino also added that being in a foreign country sometimes means not always having the opportunity to participate in a course like this.

“It’s wonderful they finally created something and brought it to us,” said Mormino. “I thought it was a great class and I hope
there’s many more.” People interested in participating can call the American Red Cross Naples office at 081-568-4788.
