New food court taking shape

A new food court set to open in March 2013 will bring four new restaurants to Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples’ Capodichino base.

The new food court, which will occupy the former Ciao Hall galley building, will include an Asian restaurant, a burger joint, an Italian restaurant and a grilled sandwich shop.

Additionally, the Subway sandwich shop and espresso bar that now occupy other spaces on the base will move into the new food court.

Tutoring program aims to help Naples students get ready for college; more adult tutors needed

A new tutoring program at Naples Middle/High School is helping prepare students for college by teaching them teamwork and problem-solving skills.

The Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) program is an extra-curricular tutoring program designed to help make students self-sufficient and adept at problem-solving, with the goal of making them competitive in a college environment.

As part of the AVID program, students aboard Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples meet after school to work through tough homework problems and com-

plete team-building exercises with the help of volunteer tutors.

The program aims to increase students’ independent thinking ability, a quality that becomes even more important in college, said Victoria Yee, AVID teacher for middle school-level students.

“How many times have college students run into trouble because the Calculus class was made up of 300 students in a lecture hall with a professor who doesn’t even know their name?” Yee asked.

Students meet once a week for “Motivational Friday” and participate in team-building activities, such as building go-karts with only toothpicks, straws, candies and other assorted materials. These activities are designed to build col-

laboration skills and help students deal with their strengths and weaknesses as a team.

“One of the special and unique qualities I bring to the team is my thinking process,” said Megan Rogers, a seventh-grade

student at Naples Middle/High School. “Everyone thinks differently, so when we combine our critical thinking, we can make something great.” see TUTORING PROGRAM Page 7

Salads, fruit cups and other healthy choices will also be sold at each store, said Harold Laird, project manager with the Navy Exchange.

The Navy Exchange negotiated the vendor contracts for the food court.

Laird said the new facility will be a major upgrade to Capodichino’s dining scene.

“The entire dining scenario at Capodichino will greatly improve given its new central location, a true food court environment, and the renewed menu options,” Laird said. “The new array of food concepts being developed onboard Capodichino will certainly enhance our sailors' quality of life.” see FOOD COURT Page 6

Happy All Soul’s Day, everyone! Today is the day where the dead are honored across Italy and other countries, so that’s why there are crowds around the cemeteries in town. Our Halloween events on base went extremely well, as anyone who attended the Spooktacular or the Seabee Haunted House will tell you. I was very impressed with the Seabees “Seven Nights of Terror” and the staff members of the Security Department and Morale, Welfare and Recreation. The event garnered an enthusiastic, costumed crowd, and I appreciated the efforts of all the organizations that came together to make Spooktacular a success. Wednesday’s trick-or-treating also seemed to go very well, with block party after block party and lots of great costumes. The holidays are just beginning here at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples, so be on the lookout for opportunities to serve single service members a Thanksgiving dinner, and plan on attending the Holiday Tree Lighting event in early December.

The beginning of November means the holiday season is almost upon us, but it also means that the winter weather is here with all the associated challenges of a cold, wet Naples winter. We’ve been conducting the holiday season safety stand downs this week, and I encourage everyone who attended one of those sessions to heed the warnings. Slow down on the slick, wet roads, and do not drive if you’ve been drinking. Have a plan before you start drinking, and stick to that plan. The plan you make once you’ve started drinking is unlikely to be as good as the one you made while sober. Also, remember those who don’t have anyone to celebrate the holidays with, and invite them in for a meal and a taste of home. We are all part of the greater military community here in Naples, and it is especially important to take care of our own at this time of year. The USO often puts together “taste of home” dinners for our single sailors, and that’s also a great opportunity to cook a traditional dish for our community members who may not have family nearby.

This week, we saw a whole lot of news coverage of hurricane Sandy and the damage to the East Coast. Our thoughts are with those affected communities.

This catastrophic event again brings into sharp focus our own need to be prepared for disaster. As many of you know, the Campania region is prone to volcanic and seismic activity, and it’s up to all of us to prepare ourselves and our families. Make a disaster preparedness kit. Monitor the emergency communication channels: AFN Radio (106.0 FM), NSA’s Facebook page (Facebook.com/NSANaples), and the Command Desktop Notification System (CDNS). Sign up to receive the popup, e-mail, SMS, and voice reports from the CDNS system if you haven’t already. Other communication methods include AFN TV, PAO Notes, and our CNIC website. Should something happen and you hear no guidance through our emergency communication channels, your first step should be to stay put in your home with your food, water and emergency supplies. If your home is unsafe, make your way to the Support Site or, alternatively, to Carney Park. Please do not come to the base as a matter of convenience if your home is safe, as you may strain our relief efforts for those truly in need. As always, we will push updates and guidance via all communications paths discussed above and through your commands. NSA maintains opens lines of communication with the Italian Civil Protection Agency, and will coordinate closely to determine the best course of action given the emergency. In the absence of other guidance, evacuate when directed by Italian authorities, and update your command and the NFAAS database with your location and contact information. Please take the time when we’re not experiencing a disaster to prepare yourself and your family.

Wildcat sports are finishing the fall season, and I want to congratulate all the athletes who competed this year in volleyball, cross country, tennis, and football. Members of the boys’ cross country team scored the best they’ve ever scored while coming in second behind SHAPE this past weekend, and the girls’ cross country team took first place. The girl’s volleyball team is seeded No. 1 in Europe, and is competing in Germany this weekend for the championship. Meanwhile, our undefeated football team is up in Germany for the super six this weekend, and I know they’ll make us all proud! GO WILDCATS! Have a great weekend everyone!

Sailor in the Spotlight: CTR1 (IDW/SW/AW) Adam Crismond Working in N39, Petty Officer Crismond’s primary job is to review and process cyber security reports from two commands, ensuring that the fleet commanders are apprised of current and emerging cyber security threats. He also trains the staff of Commander, Naval Forces europe-Africa and Commander, U.S. 6th Fleet on the regulations and procedures of operational security.

Petty Officer Crismond is also an assistant command fitness leader, leading petty officer of the command color guard team, and is one of four duty section leaders. He is a hardcharging sailor who is dedicated to the mission.

Prayer marks 500 years of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel The Catholic Church celebrated the 500th anniversary of the world-famous Sistine Chapel Wednesday with an evening prayer by Pope Benedict XVI. Michelangelo’s work was completed on Oct. 31, 1512, when Pope Julius II celebrated Vespers to mark the event. Michelangelo took four years to paint the chapel, the walls of which were decorated by a number of Renaissance artists, including Botticelli and Perugino. Michelangelo also decorated the wall behind the altar; in 1541 he completed the “Last Judgment.” The Sistine Chapel is the place where papal conclaves take place. The last restoration of the frescos was completed in 1994 and took 14 years.

Italians pay homage to Mickey Mouse Mickey Mouse’s Italian editiorial debut is being celebrated this week in Lucca, a city in the northwest part of Italy. The Walt Disney Company and Lucca Comics and Gamers are celebrating the 80th anniversary of Italian “Topolino” between Nov. 1 and 4. The Florentine editor Giuseppe Nerbini printed the first edition of an Italian Mickey Mouse comic book with just eight pages in 1932. Nerbini called him “Topo Lino” — a play on the Italian word “topolino” which means “little mouse.” Topolino became an integral part of many Italians’ childhood.

The Italian publisher is issuing a special volume to celebrate Topolino’s 80th birthday, to include comic strips from each decade, along with tales and curiosities that contributed to the history and the rise of Topolino. On Dec. 26, with edition number 2979 of the comic book, a special celebratory edition will be released featuring Mickey Mouse as hero in a tale about the history of comic books. Additionally, Milan’s WOW Spazio Fumetti comic museum will celebrate the anniversary with an exhibit called “History of a Story” from Nov. 15 to Jan. 20.

Italy celebrates Armed Forces Day Nov. 4 On Nov. 4, Italians celebrate Armed Forces Day and the Day of National Unity. Nov. 4 is the only national holiday that was maintained during all ages of Italy, including during the liberal, Fascist

and republican periods. It’s the anniversary of the end of the First World War. Until 1977 it was a public holiday, but due to a reform of the calendar of national holidays, this holiday now falls on the first Sunday of November. The most important celebrations are held in Trento, Trieste and Rome. Each year, the President of the Republic of Italy and the highest ranking officers of the Italian state lay a wreath on the Altar of the Unknown Soldier in Rome. Another tribute is made at the Shrine of Redipuglia, which contains the bodies of soldiers who fell between 1915 and 1918 and at the Battle of Vittorio Veneto, the last major confrontation that took place between Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies in World War I. In honor of the holiday, the President of the Italian Republic and the Minister of Defense also send a message of congratulations and gratitude to the armed forces on behalf on the whole country.

Prosecutors in Sicily using DNA to confirm death of bandit The investigation continues into the death of the Sicilian bandit Salvatore Giuliano, who was active in the years following World War II. Giuliano was reported shot and killed the night of July 4, 1950 in a courtyard outside the city of Palermo. Since then, there have been many questions regarding the official report of his death. Now, Palermo prosecutors are looking to end the speculation with a probe into the identity of the body buried in the tomb. In 2010, the prosecutors started an investigation after a historian presented a study concluding that the body photographed in the courtyard might not be the bandit. The historian’s conclusion came after he compared photographs of the man who died in the courtyard with dozens of photographs and footage of Giuliano from December 1949. As part of the prosecutorial investigation, the body of the bandit was exhumed from Giuliano’s family crypt and is being tested for DNA to compare with surviving relatives.

Official sources have long held that Giuliano was betrayed and gunned down by his cousin, who later was poisoned in a Palermo prison. A film on Giuliano’s life was made by director Francesco Rosi in 1962.

True, Thanksgiving and Christmas bring the best family reunions in the most colorful and decorative homescapes, but preparations can also be physically and emotionally consuming. Medical experts note stress relief does wonders for a healthy lifestyle.

So, for respite, pull away from the mission every now and then and do something cultural.

Veterans’ Day and St. Martin In Italy and many parts of Europe, Nov. 11 means honoring the soldiersaint St. Martin, loved and remembered for his Samaritan deed of cutting off half his cloak and offering it to a beggar on a bitterly, cold day in Amiens, France.

To relate the saint to our military holiday, it is interesting to know the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps

In honoring your veteran or any others you may know, consider a visit to Vomero’s magnificent St. Martin Monastery Museum, which houses lavish artworks in the former monastery’s church, cloister and pharmacy. Among the majolica pharmacy jar paintings is a beautiful depiction of the St. Martin legend.

While there, plan an hour or more to view the museum’s collections — especially the phenomenal Cucciniello Nativity scene — as well as the complex’s breathtaking Bay of Naples.

Nov. 11 to Italians also spells the uncorking of the Vino Novello (Young/New Wine), the fermentation of which is said to reach completion that day. This means an abundance of wine tastings and village “nectar” fests, which are worth joining to experience local traditions and color.

Ultimately, if entertaining a veteran with musical inclinations, look into the concert this weekend featuring a stellar American conductor and music director. Also, the classical ballet next week will surely lift spirits and moods.

Concert This weekend, Houston-born music director performs at San Carlo Theater John Axelrod comes to town with glowing credentials. Besides graduating from Harvard University in 1988, he studied under Leonard Bernstein, and attended the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1996 as well as the American Symphony Orchestra League conductors program. Since 2000, the 46-year old maestro has conducted over 130 orchestras in the United States, Europe (including Naples) and Asia, and has held a number of prestigious positions at European music venues. Currently, he is the conductor and music director of the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, based in Nantes and Angers, France.

For his return to Naples, Axelrod will lead the San Carlo Theater Orchestra in Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 in D minor. Also performing will be contralto Rinat

• Scisciano (Naples province) will hold its “Sagra della pizzette e vino cotto” Nov. 9. to 11. At this event, vendors traditionally sell tagliatelle alle boscaiola, baccala fritta and porchetta alongside Vino Novello.

Fest of Fests Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi, a lovely Alta Irpinia medieval town in the Avellino province, will celebrate “La sagra delle sagre” (“Fest of Fests”) from Nov. 17 to 18.

Avellino is known for fine, robust wines, so visitors will find Taurasi, Aglianico and Greco di Tufo from prestigious cellars there. Mushrooms, truffles, cheese, chestnuts, honey and jams traditionally add lots of gusto to the affair. At the town’s 10th-century Lombard castle, local artists will purvey wood, wrought iron and ceramic creations, while musicians entertain.

In addition to the festival offerings, wandering the beautifully reconstructed medieval streets of Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi is a chance to step back in time. The town rose from the ashes of the catastrophic Irpinia earthquake that hit the region in November 1980.

Besides the aforementioned castle, the town’s sources of pride include an 11th-century cathedral and the 12th-century Goleto Abbey (called the Assisi of Irpinia). Gastronomy Chestnuts Nothing is a better match for the “Young Wine” tastings on Nov. 11 and during the Christmas holidays than chestnuts, which are low-fat, glutenfree and rich in vitamin C. While the nuts are prevalent in Mugello near Florence, they are equally abundant in Campanian towns, many of which celebrated their harvest last month.

Victim stated that she had parked and secured her vehicle outside of her friend’s residence for approximately two to three hours, and upon returning to her vehicle she noticed the back seat folded forward and the passenger side rear window broken out.

Upon conducting a full inventory of her vehicle she reported that several items were missing.

Victim stated that he woke up to the sound of someone yelling. When he looked out his window, he noticed that his car door was open and that his dome light was on. He then rushed down to his courtyard, where he met a witness who stated that he saw five hooded males with what appeared to be Billy clubs attempting to break into multiple vehicles. Upon conducting a full inventory of his vehicle, he reported that several items were missing.

Vehicle Break-In (off base). On Oct. 22 at approximately 1:31 p.m., E5/USN reported a vehicle break-in that occurred Oct. 21 in Castel Volturno, Italy. Victim stated that she heard what she thought was the sound of her car alarm going off, and when she went outside to investigate she noticed that her front passenger window was broken. Upon conducting a full inventory of her vehicle, she reported that several items were missing.

Vehicle Break-In (off base). On Oct. 22 at approximately 2:17 p.m., CIV reported a vehicle break-in that occurred Oct. 21 in Lago Patria, Italy. Victim stated that he locked and secured his vehicle the night before, and upon going out to his vehicle the next morning he noticed that his glove compartment was open. Upon conducting a full inventory of his vehicle, he reported that several items were missing.

Vehicle Break-In (off base). On Oct. 23 at approximately 12:13 p.m., O-3/USN reported a vehicle break-in that occurred Oct. 19 in Pozzuoli, Italy. Victim stated that he parked and secured his vehicle overnight, and upon returning to it the next morning he noticed that the vehicle had been broken into. Upon conducting a full inventory of the vehicle, he reported that several items were missing.

Vehicle Break-In (off base). On Oct. 25 at approximately 10:05 a.m., CIV reported a vehicle break-in that occurred earlier that day in Naples, Italy. Victim stated that he parked his vehicle on an unknown road, and upon returning to it approximately seven hours later noticed that his passenger’s side door had been pried open and that papers were thrown about inside the car. Upon conducting a full inventory of his vehicle, he reported that no items were missing.

Vehicle Break-In (off base). On Oct. 25 at approximately 11:12 p.m., E-4/USN reported a vehicle break-in that occurred Oct. 24, in Lago Patria, Italy. Victim stated that he left his vehicle unsecured on the street in front of his residence and went out to eat with his neighbor. Upon returning to his vehicle he noticed that the front passenger window was broken out and that items in his vehicle had been moved around. Upon conducting a full inventory of his vehicle he reported that no items were missing.

Vehicle Break-In (off base). On Oct. 25 at approximately 2:22 p.m., CIV reported a vehicle break-in that occurred Oct. 23 in Pozzuoli, Italy. Victims stated that she parked and secured her vehicle outside of a restaurant, and upon finishing dining she went back to her vehicle and noticed that the rear passenger’s side window was broken. Upon conducting a full inventory of her vehicle, she reported that several items were missing.

Vehicle Break-In (off base). On Oct. 25 at approximately 10:21 p.m., E-6/USA reported a vehicle break-in that occurred earlier that day in Licola, Italy. Victim stated that he parked and secured his vehicle, and upon returning to it he noticed that his driver’s side window was smashed. Upon conducting a full inventory of his vehicle, he reported that several items were missing.

Stolen Vehicle (off base). On Oct. 28 at approximately 7:38 a.m., E-7/USN reported a vehicle theft that occurred earlier that day in Lago Patria, Italy. Victim stated that she parked and secured her vehicle outside of her residence the night before, and upon waking up the next day she noticed that her vehicle was no longer in front of her residence.

Stolen Vehicle (off base). On Oct. 28 at approximately 7:05 p.m., E-5/USN reported a vehicle theft that occurred Oct. 27 in Gricignano, Italy. Victim stated that he parked and secured his vehicle in front of his residence the night before, and upon returning to his vehicle the next morning he noticed it was missing.

FOOD COURT

Construction on the updated food court building is now underway, and is set to be completed sometime in January, said Scott Ingalls, head of the project management branch of the NSA Naples Public Works Department.

After that, additional work will need to be completed to construct each restaurant concept inside the building, Ingalls said. The goal is to have the completed food court open in March, he said.

“Everyone is on board to meet or beat that date,” Ingalls said.

The goal of building a new food court in the old Capodichino galley building is to consolidate all the food options that now exist on the base, Ingalls said. After the new food court opens, the current restaurants in the Capo Landing food court will ultimately close, freeing that space for other uses.

While an early design for the new food court involved an eating area covered by a canopy or pergola, the plan has changed since then, Ingalls said.

“That pergola is gone and it’s got some curved elements that float in the ceiling,” Ingalls said.

“I think it is going to be a nice, interesting space.”

ASC Thanksgiving luncheon set for Nov. 14 From the Allied Spouses Club

he American members of the Allied Spouses Club (ASC) will host their annual Thanksgiving luncheon on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at the Holiday Inn in Castel Volturno.

The luncheon is one way for ASC members from the United States to share their culture and traditions with members from other nations.

“Our luncheon is hugely popular with the members,” said Liz Knapp, ASC’s publicity coordinator. “We serve turkey and all the trimmings, but with a local flair. Most Europeans would never taste a typical Thanksgiving meal if they weren’t in the U.S. at holiday time. Maybe that’s why our lunch is so well-attended, and generates so much excitement among our members.”

The American luncheon is famous for not only the food, but also for the gift baskets and donated prizes that guests take home, Knapp added.

“The ASC lunches and raffles are a fun way for us to raise money for our Welfare Fund, and to help our 19 local charities,” she said.

There is ample free parking at the Holiday Inn, and a bus will be running there from Allied Joint Force Command (JFC) Naples.

TUTORING PROGRAM Continued from Page 1

Yee said the program is not unique to Naples High School. It is part of a larger program that first started in California almost 30 years ago and has since spread to schools across the United States.

The program is in need of tutors — currently, the program only has one tutor available to students. Yee said she hopes to have at least three for the middle school level children and two for the high school level this year.

Tutors form a vital part of the AVID program and make up about 40 percent of the curriculum. One of the key things tutors help students with is running study groups, which Yee said is vital for effective learning in college.

Students will come to the study

group with a “point of confusion,” which is a problem or difficulty they encounter while doing their homework for history, English, math or science. The tutor works with the student groups to address each problem and help the students find a solution.

Yee said school regulations here require that tutors for the AVID program have some college expe-

rience so they can teach and prepare students for college and pass on their own college experiences.

FFSC Tip of the Week: Documents to keep during your PCS move From the Fleet and Family Support Center • Medical and immunization records. These records are very important in case of an emergency. Immunization records are important for school-age children when you go to enroll the child in school or daycare.

• Birth certificates and Social Security cards. These documents prove important in many scenarios. It is important that you keep these in a safe place. Once you arrive at your destination, make sure you return these documents to a safe deposit box or fire safe.

• Leave and Earnings Statement (LES). Your LES is a document commonly asked for when applying for a home loan or an apartment.

• Marriage certificates or divorce decrees. These documents are necessary to fix problems in DEERS and with your housing allowance.

Like birth certificates and Social Security cards, they should only be carried for short periods of time and returned to a safe after arriving at your new home.

• Orders. Your orders have important information that may be needed during your transition. Keep several copies on hand so you are ready when you are asked to produce them.

• Moving paperwork. Keep information on the moving company, your transportation office representative, and your list of household goods.

Hopefully you will not need this information; however, you will be prepared if you do.

• Insurance information.

• Passports.

• Power of attorney forms. The original signed and notarized Power of Attorney may be necessary during you move. This is important for families rotating at different times. Obtain this prior to leaving and exercise caution in your choice of who you grant this power.

• Tax returns. These may prove useful in my uncommon ways. Your Tax Returns provide financial information that may help you budget or apply for Student Financial Aid. By hand-carrying these documents, you will be prepared for many scenarios. Be sure to keep the documents safe while traveling by air and put them in a safety deposit box or fire safe upon arriving at your new station.

If you do not want to carry all of this paperwork, consider scanning certain documents to keep on a disk or jump drive. Just make sure you keep it in a secure place during your travels and your arrival. Preparation can help you have a stress-free move.

I’ll admit, I haven’t always been a fan of ornate Italian Baroque churches. In Rome, I often find these jewels of the Counter-Reformation disquieting, dripping in so much gilding and polychromatic marble that you barely know where to look.

But the cathedral of Naples is different. Walking inside, the colors of the nave are harmonious and soothing, a mixture of pure white, gray and soft brown, with gold leaf accents only where warranted.

While far from simple, the decoration of the Naples Duomo isn’t distracting, and I

like that. Gilding is used sparingly, drawing visitors’ eyes to the altar, the magnificent coffered ceiling, and the two organs placed toward the front of the church. Restraint is also shown in the white marble busts that line the nave, which depict Neapolitan bishops from the 16th and 17th centuries. Each seems to be caught in the moment of speaking, gracefully gesturing with lips parted. It’s the same sense of movement that the master sculptor Gianlorenzo Bernini is praised for in his works throughout Rome; yet Neapolitan sculptors seem to universally capture the motion of their subjects, as if taking a cue from the people of Naples — people who are constantly passionate and constantly in motion.

The cathedral saves its most lavish decoration for what is arguably its most important room: the Cappella del Tesoro di San Gennaro, or Chapel of the Treasury, which is dedicated to the city’s patron saint, Saint Januarius. It’s a room that should be pictured in every art history book, but for some reason frequently escapes mention.

Though every inch of the chapel is embellished, the space is small enough that it seems to welcome visitors instead of intimidating them.

Standing inside, you feel like you’re getting a hug from God. Looking up, you find yourself at the center of a heavenly universe, a swirling paradise of saints and angels that spirals upward and disappears

into a golden mist. The incredible trompe l’oeil dome was painted by Giovanni Lanfranco in the 17th century, and crowns a treasure trove of splendid Baroque painting and sculpture. Indeed, this is called the treasury chapel for a reason; it is where Naples’ most priceless relics, two ampoules filled with the blood of San Gennaro, reside.

Though the vials of blood are normally concealed behind the chapel altar, three times per year they are removed and shown to the people of Naples, who wait for them to miraculously liquefy. If they don’t, it is said bad things will befall the city. More often than not, the liquefaction occurs as expected, repeating a phenomenon that scientists have long struggled to explain.

I was not familiar with the story of San Gennaro before moving to Naples, but the saint’s powerful connection with the city’s history can be felt in every part of his namesake chapel. On the east altar, the saint is depicted before his beheading, which is said to have taken place in A.D. 305 in the city of Pozzuoli, west of Naples. According to popular belief, he has intervened to save the city of Naples several times since then. His influence is credited with sparing the city from a plague outbreak in 1527, a feat that inspired the construction of the chapel. Later, in 1631, he was credited with saving the city from an eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. This act secured his status as Naples’ patron saint.

Nearly every important Neapolitan artist contributed to the Treasury Chapel of San Gennaro in the 17th and 18th centuries, and artists from other regions left their mark as well.

The result is a cohesive medley of brilliant marble, worked bronze, silver, and gold, along with vibrant frescoes and altarpieces. Even the blackand-white marble floor was the work of renowned sculptor Cosimo Fanzago. It’s a place where you need to sit down for a moment to take it all in — a side chapel that is truly the focal point of the Naples Duomo.

GETTING THERE The Naples Duomo is located at Via Duomo, 147. A little bit

north of the cathedral, Line 1 of the Naples Metro stops in Piazza Museo, while Line 2 stops in Piazza Cavour. From either stop, you can cross Via Foria and head south on Via Duomo to reach the cathedral in a few minutes. Alternatively, you can take the Alibus from the Capodichino Airport to Piazza Garibaldi and walk west from there; the Duomo is about a 20 minute walk from the central train station. Parking is limited in the area.

IF YOU GO The Cappella del Tesoro di San Gennaro is open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. On Sundays and holidays, the

treasury chapel is open from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m. Admission is free during these hours.

You can get into the chapel at any time if you take a tour of the Museo del Tesoro (Museum of the Treasury), which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except Wednesdays. Admission to the museum costs €7, but includes access to the treasury chapel, the sacristy rooms and a large collection of church treasures. The entrance to the museum is located just south of the church.

The Duomo’s hours are from roughly 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Monday through Saturday. On Sundays, the cathedral is open from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Napoli Nation Fan Club members attended a soccer game Oct. 28 between SSC Napoli and Chievo-Verona, during which they cheered on the Naples soccer team and even had the chance to brush elbows with the players.

SSC Napoli won the game by a score of 1-0, thanks to an amazing goal in the second half by Marek Hamsik, who shot from a very difficult angle just underneath the opposing goalie's grasp. It was a hard-fought game, as one Chievo-Verona player was ejected in the second half for a second yellow card, and several shots on goal were deflected by the Chievo-Verona goalie. The win helped SSC Napoli kept pace with firstplace Juventus; the Naples team is now just three points behind.

aura Patterson, a freshman, has been named the Girls’ Swimming Athlete of the Month. Maura stands out among her teammates for her outstanding performance during the Tiger Sharks’ first home meet Sept. 30.

Maura not only had a fantastic day of swimming, but her positive attitude and motivation to excel contributed to the Naples Tiger Sharks taking first place over the Sigonella Swordfish. Maura set the pace, taking first place in all her events and qualifying for the European Forces Swim League championships in the 200-meter Individual Medley. Maura personally contributed 15 total points for her first-place finishes. She also swam solid legs on both the freestyle and medley relays, helping earn two 1st place finishes and resulting in an additional 14 points to the team total.

Maura has contributed to the Naples Tiger Sharks for the past four years; she continues to be a strong contender, and a true role model and mentor to her teammates.

ohn Thibodeau, a junior, has been named the Boys’ Swimming Athlete of the Month. He deserves recognition for his outstanding performance, practice ethics, sportsmanship and team work. This is John’s first season with the swim team and he is already proving to be versatile in all strokes and events, with his strength lying in the long distance events. John traveled up to Aviano this month to compete in his first meet of the season. He easily tallied 19 points for the team with 2 second-place finishes in his individual events, and swam strong legs on the freestyle relay and medley relay teams. John led off for his 200-meter freestyle relay, and swam a qualifying time to earn a berth at the European Forces Swimming Championships to be held in Eindhoven, Netherlands. John is a definite asset to the team; his dedication, hard work, and practice ethics are all qualities that make him stand out among his team mates.

ictoria Krause, a junior, has been named the Girls’ Volleyball Athlete of the Month. After only two weeks of competitive play, Victoria was named a Stars & Stripes athlete of the week for all of women’s sports across Europe.

Throughout September, Victoria was a dominating presence on Naples’ successful women’s volleyball team, leading the team with 49 kills and a kill percentage of 44 percent. That means she scored a point almost half the times she hit. She is also a great defensive asset to the Wildcats’ game, tallying up 21 digs in only four matches. Off the court, she is a great leader, constantly encouraging her teammates. She also competes as a member of the Naples Tiger Sharks swim team, serves as a class officer for the junior class, and maintains a high GPA.

ica Staten, a sophomore, has been named the Cheerleading Athlete of the Month. Rica is a dedicated member of the fall 2012 cheerleading team.

She has been an integral part of each practice and game, stepping up as a leader even though she is a first-time cheerleader. She is picking up stunting, tumbling, and jumps, but she really shines at being spirited and loud for her teams. You can’t help but watch and listen to her at the games — she catches your eye.

She also helped lead her group for the youth cheer camp. Rica continues to improve her own skills, while pushing others to improve as well. Outside of cheerleading, Rica is a member of the National Junior Honor Society, the Model United Nations, and the Future Educators of America, as well as a singer and pianist.

Obtaining your Sojourner Permit Italian law requires all foreign personnel working or living within Italy, other than an active-duty member under military orders, to obtain a Sojourner Permit within eight days of arrival in Italy. This is different from a visa, which is merely an approval for entry into the country.

All applicants over 14 years of age must apply in person, as each person's signature is required at the time of application.

NATIONALS OF ANY STATE OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY COMING TO ITALY DO NOT REQUIRE ANY VISA OR SOJOURNER PERMIT. As part of the Area Orientation process, the U.S. Region Legal Service Office (RLSO EURAFSWA) assists in the preparation and oversees the acquisition of the Sojourner Permit for all personnel attached to U.S. Navy commands in the Naples area. A big month for Naples NJROTC By c/PCPO Jacob Bass Naples NJROTC Public Affairs Officer

ctober and November are proving to be busy months for the Naples Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC).

On Oct. 18, the unit took an all-hands visit to the oldest aircraft carrier in the U.S. Navy arsenal, the USS Enterprise.

The cadets truly enjoyed themselves as they were taken around the ship, and the cadet officers and chief selectees were able to see the flight room of the VFA-211 Checkmates.

Speaking of chief selectees, the cadet chiefs program started up Oct. 23.. All c/PO1s have the option of going through the Chief Program. Currently in this unit there are 15 cadets who are going through this program. Additionally, all firstyear cadets were promoted to the rate of E-2 (Seaman Apprentice) Oct. 24, and cadets received all the awards they had earned up to that time.

Finally, the Naples NJROTC drill teams are preparing for their debut in February. The Armed Drill Team has started

up and cadets are already practicing the handling of the rifles and the 16 count manual of arms. Along with this, the unarmed drill team has started up and they are currently practicing their routine to make it perfect come February.

And last but not least, the Rifle Marksman team is starting to practice. The team members will take aim in November,

when they have their first shooting competition.

This coming month is very big for the NJROTC unit.

There are many teams starting up, and competitions along with promotions. Many cadets are looking forward to these events, as well as to their bootcamp that is coming up in December. There will be more news on that as it develops.
