The Path of the Gods is a 6 km hike on an ancient trail through mountains along the Amalfi Coast with impressive panoramic views. The path from Bomerano (40.62987 N, 14.53994 E) to Nocelle takes about 2 1/2
hours, even if you stop for a snack or take a few hundred photos along the way. This is only considering one way though, so plan on doubling that time as you decide to hike back to your car or take the painful descent of approximately 1,700 stairs towards the town of Positano.
The path is still used by trail horses, farmers, goat herders, hunters and others as they make their way through the mountains in between the towns. Many homes have vineyards along the trail. The trail’s name in its native tongue is Sentiero Degli Dei. It’s well marked with white

and red stripes of paint and 15 number markers to let you know you’re still on the path, as well as how far you’ve come. About one quarter of the trail can be done either on the low or high trail. The low trail is slightly better maintained and has fewer loose rocks. See PATH OF THE GODS Page 4

Maestro Pizzaiolo Attilio Albachiara from Acerra, the town of Pulcinella, and his crew were invited by the Welfare & Recreation Association (WRA) to make approximately 500 pizzas for Pizza Festival 2013, Oct. 12, in the Support Site Village Forum. Albachiara won the Pizza STG (Traditional Specialty Guaranteed) World Contest in 2011. STG is given by the European Union to safeguard Neopolitan Pizza. More than 600 people attended the second annual festival, with the smell of fresh pizza greeting them as they arrived. Participation Encouraged in SAPR Survey

Tonight is one of the highlights of the year for NSA Naples kids, when the USO, MWR, Navy CYP and NOSC, among others, host the Spooktacular aboard Support Site. Starting at 6 p.m., the event has a wide variety of great activities for the whole family, including a pumpkin decorating and carving contest, a pumpkin pie eating contest, trick or treating, professional photography services, the famous Seabees’ haunted house, a maze, live music, movies, a hayride, and food vendors. Next week, on Thursday, Trick or Treating is planned on Support Site from 6 to 9 p.m. For those folks who will be passing out candy on Halloween, please set up outside the doors to your building. Many kids are in oversized costumes with limited visibility, and navigating so many sets of stairs in one night brings the risk of tripping and falling. There are many other great events on the horizon, including tomorrow night’s Navy Ball, which has sold out. As a reminder, the Ball will be uncovered, and there are still a few rooms available at the Ball location. We also have the holidays just around the corner, with the tree lighting slated for Dec. 5 and the Harlem Globetrotters pulling into town on Dec. 11. Fortunately, the government shutdown has ended, bringing a bit more stability to many families in the area that were affected by furloughed positions. Though we continue with the Sequester and a Continuing Resolution, vice a fully funded government spending plan, we can move forward. This includes new opportunities for employment; despite being under the hiring freeze, the Naples area has managed to add three new jobs this week, which can be viewed at usajobs.gov. With the strides ahead, it is important to continue to use common sense and look out for one another at home and at work. We remain family to each other in this overseas environment. Recently, there was a fire in base housing; due to confusion once the fire alarm was activated, the NSA Fire Department was not alerted to the fire for a further 20 minutes. Many of our buildings are wired to automatically alert the fire department when an alarm is activated, but some are not. Do not assume. Please, when you hear an alarm, evacuate the building, ensure others are evacuating, and then call the fire department. Double alerts are highly preferred to none, and someone could be injured or killed with a presupposition that “somebody else called so I don’t need to.” Most importantly, spread the word to your neighbors. Be safe, and use common sense, so that we can all continue to enjoy our beautiful life here in Naples.
The 2013 Navywide sexual assault survey is short and completely anonymous. It can be accessed from any web-enabled computer, tablet or smartphone at www.donsapro. navy.mil/donsas.html. The password for all military participants is “2013SURVEY”, and the survey will be available through Jan. 6.

Residential Satisfaction Survey (RSS) The annual Residential Satisfaction Survey (RSS) was delivered to all occupied Support Site units in September. The results of this world wide annual survey are designed to assist leadership in identifying areas for improvements and successful practices that can be shared in the housing community. By taking time to fill out and submit the survey, your voice will be heard and may directly impact future Navy Family Housing residents. The final date of submission has been extended to Oct. 31. The surveys can be completed and mailed in, or submitted online via the website identified on the survey using the survey ID located at the top of the form.

A pet blessing ceremony was held at the Support Site Village Forum earlier this month by Chaplain Dirk Caldwell. "A blessing of animals allows us the opportunity to honor our relationship with all that God has created," said Caldwell. "We get to recognize our mutual interdependence with God's creatures and recommit to being good stewards of those gifts. Animals play a large part in our well-being, serving as fun-loving pets, as first responders, and as aides for those with disabilities. A pet blessing ceremony is simply an opportunity that we can gather and recognize our pet's significant role in our lives and to thank God for revealing God's wonderful love through all of creation." Italians Rob ATM with New Technique Italian bank robbers have used many new ways of making their job easier, including using forklike devices to steal money from cash machines. They recently found another easy way to actually use a Hoover vaccum to suck up thousands of euros from the ATM in the central town San Marcello, located in the Marche region. The thieves unhinged the machine’s front panel before sucking up the money placed in a safe deposit boxes which amounted to a few thousand euros and fled as the alarm went off.
Museums to Stay Open Late Saturday Many museums will be open until late Saturday night in various cultural places in Italy. The Royal Palace in Caserta, Royal Palace in Naples, the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, Museum of Capodimonte and Castel Sant’Elmo, to mention a few, are part of the fourth edition of the “Notte al Museo” initiative that had great success last year. The Capodimonte museum organizes a drawing workshop and also an exhibition of gilded bronze, silver, brass, colored marble, pottery, carved wood and porcelain that belonged once to a refined representative of the late nineteenth century, Mario de Cicco. The Castel

Arrests Made for Stealing from the Dead Police in the city of Pesaro arrested five former undertakers who were allegedly part of funeral scam where pacemakers were stolen from dead bodies. There are 29 more people, including doctors and funeral company employees, being investigated because police believe they were also involved in acts of fraud and pocketed money from funeral services without paying any contributions to the Pesaro local hospital.
Billboard on Capri Causes Concern A local councilor from the island of Capri is demanding the removal of a billboard with a reclining nude female. The billboard caused outrage on the island because it showed two slices of Parma ham draped on the female buttocks. The advertisement was positioned at the island’s port where hundreds of visitors disembark daily. The local councilor thought it was offensive to women.

Any time you see a split in the trail, just look for one of the trail markers painted on some rocks and continue trekking in that direction. If you decide to head down to Positano, you can enjoy lunch with a beautiful view of the mountainside town and watch the numerous boats pull in and out. There are plenty of shopping opportunities here as well. If you parked in Bomerano, you can either take a ferry or bus to Amalfi. Bus tickets can be purchased in the Tobacchi stores or you can head to the pier beside the town’s beach to take in the view of the coast from a boat as you head to Amalfi. From Amalfi, you can catch a bus to Agerola (Bomerano), which is three stops after a steep drive up switchbacks to get back up to 2,080 ft. of elevation. There are fewer buses running on holidays and Sundays, but it’s still possible. The scenery and friendly

visitor or start using it as a running trail, it merits a visit during your stay in Naples.

To help continue energy awareness month efforts, take a look at some things to pay special attention to around the house. - Consider replacing old lighting products with newer, higher efficiency CLF’s, T8’s and other efficient light products. In some cases, you may be eligible for tax deductions on upgrades done to a personal business. - Switch to higher efficiency electric motors in
certain commercial and industrial items if applicable. - Consider switching to high efficiency transformers for at home or at work. As always, remember to switch off non-essential electronic devices like monitors, speakers, and printers before leaving the office. ‘Silence hides Violence’ with domestic Violence
Sailors Come Out for a 'Taste of Home'

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, and this year’s theme is “Silence Hides Violence,” exploring the shame, stigma and community impacts of not reporting or seeking help for domestic violence. Domestic violence is one of the most chronically underreported crimes. It is essentially the imbalance of power and control in a relationship, in which one intimate partner purposefully threatens, intimidates, or physically or sexually assaults another. It can lead to longterm effects of low self-esteem, trauma, physical injury and even death. In an eight-year review of homicides in the Navy, 54 percent were related to domestic violence. It is important to debunk the myths regarding seeking help surrounding domestic violence specifically in the military. Domestic violence is in no way permissible or acceptable, and you have a right to feel safe and free from violence in every relationship. What are the specific rules regarding reporting domestic violence in the Navy? There are several reasons military personnel and their families are hesitant to report domestic violence, including feeling worried reporting will ruin a military career, well being of children, and financial security. Similar to guidelines regarding sexual assault reporting, domestic violence victims in the military have unrestricted and restricted reporting options. Both reporting options provide victims with counseling, family advocacy services, and medical care. What are the warning signs of an unhealthy relationship? There are several warning signs you or a loved one could potentially be headed on a path toward domestic violence. – Control: Is one person making all the decisions in the relationship? This includes demands such as wanting to know where you spend your money, what you wear and who you hang out with. Does your partner isolate you from others, including family and friends? – Jealousy: It is common to think if you make your partner jealous, they really care about you. In fact, excessive jealously is a red flag for an unhealthy or abusive relationship and often a lack of security and powerlessness for the jealous partner. – Dishonesty: Does one of you tell lies or hide things from the other person? Do you feel that you have to lie to keep your partner content and avoid conflict? – Verbal abuse: Often, verbal abuse and insults precede physical violence in a relationship and should not be tolerated in any relationship. – Physical and sexual abuse: Using any physical force, hitting, slapping, grabbing and shoving the other person on purpose. This also includes using force during sex, or pressure to have sex when one person does not want to. Cruelty to animals and children are also warning signs of an abuser. – Disrespect: Do you feel as if your partner has no consideration of your feelings? Making fun of the other person’s appearance, opinions, and choices are all ways of humiliating and taking power away from a person. – Intimidation: Making threats to break up if certain demands of needs are not met or threatening regarding the use of violence and then dismissing it or playing it off as a joke. – Dependence: The “can’t live without you” mentality is typical of an abuser or unhealthy relationship dynamic. Coming off too strong in the beginning of a relationship (i.e. saying “I love you” or making demands or commitments almost immediately in a relationship). What can you do to help a victim of domestic violence? It is important that you provide victims the resources available, even if they might not want to use them right away. While letting the person know you care about them, avoid giving advice, or getting physically involved, as this may not provide the adequate safety needed for the victim or you. Also, visit the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence website www.ncadv. org to learn more ways you can help or get involved in ending domestic violence. There are services offered for anyone who wants more information regarding domestic violence, or who may know someone who could benefit from seeking help. Domestic abuse victim advocates, psychoeducational groups, support groups, family, individual and marital counseling are available. Resources for domestic abuse and prevention, including sources for this article are: National Domestic Abuse Hotline 800-799-SAFE, Military OneSource, Choose Respect Initiative by CDC, and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

Resiliency, Culture Change are Focus of 2013 #NavyEnergy Action Month From Chief of Naval Operations Energy and Environmental Readiness Division Public Affairs
Navy commands worldwide are participating in Energy Action Month to share information on energy efficiency, highlight Navy's successful energy initiatives, and foster an energy-aware culture. President Obama declared October as National Energy Action Month and issued a call to action for all Americans to work together to achieve greater energy security. Navy commands worldwide are participating in Energy Action Month to share information on energy efficiency, highlight Navy's successful energy initiatives, and foster an energy-aware culture. The goal of 2013 Navy Energy Action Month efforts is to bring about cultural and behavioral change that enables energy security and resiliency. The Navy's energy initiatives are highlighted in October, but continue throughout the year. The Navy launched a video this month that describes a new information campaign to inspire energy behavior change and awareness among the Navy workforce. The campaign's theme, "Did You Know?" highlights the importance of energy to the Navy's mission. The video can be viewed here: http://youtu.be/1D8JFu-gpzg. Energy security and mission success go hand-inhand for the Navy. "Energy is our greatest enabler and our greatest vulnerability both afloat and ashore," explained Rear Adm. Kevin Slates, director of Navy's Energy and Environmental Readiness Division. "Our combat capability is directly tied to the energy we have available-and our ability to use it efficiently so we have it when and where it's needed." The Department of Defense (DoD) accounts for 80 percent of the Federal government's energy consumption. The Navy accounts for 22 percent of DoD's total petroleum consumption; 84 percent of this figure is consumed in fleet operations. These rates of
consumption represent strategic and operational vulnerabilities. By making more energy efficient choices, the Navy can increase capability, reduce vulnerabilities, and enhance resiliency. "We deliver 1.25 billion gallons of fuel worldwide to operators annually. This represents an Achilles' heel in operators," explains Capt. James Goudreau, director of the Navy Energy Coordination Office. "Our efforts are focused on technology changing behavior to provide options for increased payload, range, or endurance, thus giving commanders greater operational flexibility." The Department of the Navy is also providing energy-awareness training opportunities for fleet Sailors and aviators, Marine Corps expeditionary operators, and shore energy managers. The training sessions will focus on energy savings practices, culture change, and increasing awareness of energy use. At the Pentagon, Navy Energy Action Month posters and electronic billboard signs are helping to increase awareness of Navy energy initiatives. The Nimitz Strike Group commenced flight operations in the central Mediterranean Sea, Oct. 20. The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68), along with embarked Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 11, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 11, and Destroyer Squadron 23 is supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations. "We look forward to strengthening the interoperability between our partner countries in the 6th Fleet region, and building on the common goal of maritime security through exercises and exchanges," said Rear Adm. Michael S. White, commander of CSG 11. Prior to arriving in the Mediterranean, Nimitz spent the majority of its time in the 5th Fleet with guided-missile destroyers USS Shoup (DDG 86), USS Stockdale (DDG 106) and USS
William P. Lawrence (DDG 110), along with guided-missile cruisers USS Princeton (CG 59) and USS Monterey (CG 61). "Our strike group and air wing have performed admirably during our time in 5th Fleet in the face of uncertainty," said Capt. Jeff Ruth, commanding officer of Nimitz. "Everyone should be very proud of their ability to pull together as a team to get the job done." While in U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations, CVW 11 executed more than 1,200 sorties in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, tallying more than 6,500 flight hours. "I'm very proud of the effort our Sailors and Marines have contributed during our time in the 5th Fleet AOR," said White. "We have and will continue to remain focused on accomplishing our missions, and I think that shows in the work we've done." This will be the first time Nimitz will be operating in the 6th Fleet area of operation since 1998.
The Keep What You've Earned campaign released its second testimonial video Oct. 11 as part of a series featuring four Sailors' personal stories about how alcohol incidents impacted their careers and the importance of drinking responsibly. The latest video features Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Jason Hall from Naval Base San Diego. He reveals how his destructive drinking habits finally caught up with him, and the impact it had on his career, his wallet and his relationships. For Hall, it was just another typical day of heavy drinking after work. Thinking that he could sleep off the effects of the alcohol, he woke up later in the night and tried to drive home while still intoxicated. "I hit two pylons, and before I was able to pull over, the police were already behind me," said Hall. Hall was convicted for driving under the influence and ended up paying approximately $7,000 in fines, or in his words, "the most expensive night out ever." In the video, he credits his Drug and Alcohol Programs Advisor with helping get his career - and his life - back on track. Today Hall focuses his energies on cycling, cooking and caring for his young, energetic dog. He is also working on rebuilding his career and earning back the respect of his shipmates, parents, siblings and friends. Hall volunteered to participate in the Keep What You've Earned testimonial video series so that other Sailors can see the reality of destructive drinking and learn from his mistakes. "I actually get upset when I see people making the same mistakes that I did and having the thought that it won't be them," said Hall. "I used to think the same thing - that it wouldn't be me - and it definitely was me." Hall's testimonial is the second of four that will be released this fall as part of the Keep What You've Earned campaign. Each testimonial reminds Sailors of the importance of drinking responsibly and keeping what you've earned. The Naples Tiger Sharks were one of six teams that traveled over Columbus Day weekend to compete in the annual “Double Dip” meets hosted by the Sigonella Swordfish. Saturday’s schedule was a standard European Forces Swim League meet, while Sunday was a Pentathlon for the 57 swimmers from Naples. All teams were quick off the blocks Saturday, but not quick enough for the Tiger Sharks. Naples won the meet with a total of 1,202 points, while the Swordfish finished second with 1,021 points. Stuttgart Piranhas took third with 644 points. Aviano Sea Dragons took fourth with 213.5 pts. Vicenza Mako Sharks had 127.5 and NATO Marlins International finished with 28 points. Swimmers who placed first in all three of their events earned the team 36 points. Swimmer Mijke Witkamp took first place in the 17-19 girls 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke, while Brandon Oestereicher took first in the boys 13-14 100m butterfly, 100m freestyle and the 400m freestyle. Sean Quirk took first in the 200m individual medley, 100m freestyle and the 200m freestyle for the 12-and-under boys. Alejandra Ruppe took first place in the 8-and-under girls 100m individual medley, 50m butterfly and the 200m freestyle. Other swimmers with first
place finishes were Ian Boggs, Lydia Boyum, Kendall Ewing, Lorenzo Flores, McKenna Gray, Seamus Gyles, Sophia Krause, Jacob Levine, Zachary Oestereicher, Emily Patterson, Luke Patterson, Paul Patterson, Carly Sharp, Lindsey Sharp, Brendan Smith, Ashley Snodgrass, and Stephen Traucht. Sunday’s pentathlon was another successful win for the Naples Tiger Sharks. They easily took first with 983.5 points, while the Swordfish followed with 757 points. The Stuttgart Piranhas finished with 626, Aviano Sea Dragons 154.5, Vicenza Mako Sharks 130 and NATO Marlins International with 43 points. The pentathlon places in each age group were based on the total time for swimmers. Swimmers 12 and under swam the 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke, 100m individual medley, 50m breaststroke and the 50m freestyle. In order to place in the pentathlon swimmers had to successfully complete all five events. Tiger Shark Alejandra Ruppe took first place for the 8-andunder girls while Paul Patterson and Jordan Traucht took first and second respectively. Lauren Snodgrass took first in the 9-year-old girls with Leslie Traucht taking a close second. John Ruppe took second place for the 9-year-old boys. For the 10-year-old girls, Lindsey Sharp finished second and Malena Yenco finished sixth. For the 10-year-old boys, Sean Quirk took first place, Luke Patterson took third and Brendan Smith placed sixth. Quirk also earned the title “biggest loser” for the boys. Sarah Oestereicher placed fifth for the 11-year-old girls while Teegan Barnett and Gennie Welch placed 10th and 11th. Naples took the top five places for the 11-year-old boys. Jacob Levine finished in first place; Kendall Ewing took second; followed by Stephen Traucht, Ryan Gray and Brendan Roberts. Emily Patterson won the 1314-year-old girls category and was also named “Swimmer of the Meet.” Lydia Boyum and Caitlin Quirk placed fourth and fifth respectively, while Sydney Milton placed 9th and Ingrid Bidwell placed 13th. Brandon placed first in the 13-14-yearold boys, Max Milton placed second, Andrew Smith and Ian Boggs placed 5th and 6th respectively, McKenna Gray took seventh place, Francis Carlos placed 8th, Chris Levine and Connor Roberts placed 9th and 10th. Naples had 18 swimmers travel to Lisbon, Portugal the following weekend to compete in another dual meet against the Lisbon Bull sharks, Rota Swim Club and the Lakenheath Barracudas. Saturday’s meet was the first time the Tiger Sharks have taken second place this season. Sunday’s pen-
tathlon proved to be a better day for the Tiger Sharks, improving their record to 5-1. Half of the competing Tiger Sharks earned first place in all three of their events Saturday. These swimmers were Jerra Ewing, Kendall Ewing, Emily Patterson, Luke Patterson, Maura Patterson, Paul Patterson, Berkay Payal, Lauren Snodgrass and Mijke Witkamp. Ingrid Bidwell took second place in all three of her events. Other swimmers with top three finishes were Teegan Barnett, Sydney Bidwell, James Moore, Ashley Snodgrass and Callie Van Dyke. Josey Gregory, Lizzy Gregory and Ryan Sword all had time improvements. On Sunday, Jerra Ewing, Emily Patterson, Luke Patterson, Lauren Snodgrass and Mijke Witkamp finished in first place in all 5 of their events. Kendall Ewing, Maura Patterson, Paul Patterson and Ashley Snodgrass all had at least one first place finish, while Ingrid Bidwell, Sydney Bidwell, Ryan Sword and Callie Van Dyke all had finishes in the top 3. The Tiger Sharks will host their next home meet Sunday, Oct. 27.

A four-hour day camp was offered by the Naples Wildcats boys and girls volleyball teams Saturday to show kids just how much fun volleyball can be. About 20 camp participants rotated through 15minute sessions with experienced high school volleyball players throughout the day. The camp was
educational, but tried to spread the love of volleyball through fun and games, with the goal of extending that passion to their friends and families. The Lady Wildcats will be hosting their final home games this weekend, starting with tonight’s game against Florence in the high school gym at 6 p.m.

Obtaining your Sojourner Permit Italian law requires all foreign personnel working or living within Italy, other than an active-duty member under military orders, to obtain a Sojourner Permit within eight days of arrival in Italy. This is different from a visa, which is merely an approval for entry into the country. All applicants over 14 years of age must apply in person, as each person's signature is required at the time of application. USS Rentz Rescues Fishing Vessel in Distress after 10 Days Lost at Sea By Ens. John Baldwin, USS Rentz Public Affairs
USS RENTZ, At Sea (NNS) -Guided-missile frigate USS Rentz (FFG 46) and embarked U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) conducted a Safety-ofLife-at-Sea operation rescue Oct. 20-21 for a fishing vessel, 200 nautical miles off the coast of Ecuador in distress and stranded for 10 days. The crew of the 14 meter vessel and four other small crafts in tow, had been without fuel or food prior to Rentz' arrival. The distressed vessel was spotted early Sunday morning, Oct. 20 by Rentz' forward lookouts, who reported the small craft roughly 6,000 yards forward of the ship's position. The ship swiftly responded and launched a rigid-hull inflatable boat to investigate the situation with embarked U.S. Coast Guard

During the two-day rescue operation, LEDET personnel discovered that the vessel and five Ecuadorian nationals aboard had been struck by heavy weather, disorienting the crew and setting the small vessel 100 nautical miles off-course. Adrift and out of fuel, the crew subsisted on bananas until Rentz arrived on scene and provided meals, ready-to-eat and approximately 120 gallons of diesel fuel; enough to return to home. "Our crew is prepared to handle a myriad of situations while deployed to the 4th Fleet Area of Operations, including Safety-ofLife-at-Sea operations. We do so with the utmost pride and professionalism, and it is our duty to assist those in need on the high seas when the time comes. I am very pleased with this operation and could not be more proud of the swift actions taken
by our crew," Cmdr. Lance Lantier, commanding officer of USS Rentz said. Rentz is currently conducting counter transnational organized crime operations in the 4th Fleet Area of Operations as part of Operation Martillo which began in January 2012.

In the Spotlight LT JEFFREY DEAN Lt. Jeffrey Dean reported to the U.S. Naval Hospital Naples Dental Clinic during summer of 2013. Originally from Southern Indiana, Dean graduated from Indiana University School of Dentistry in 2010. His first tour as a Navy dentist was at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and he deployed alongside Marines to Afghanistan in 2011. Previously, while enlisted in the Marine Corps, he deployed with 1st Marines during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom in 2003. Currently he serves as a general dentist and is key in providing dental treatment for all of our beneficiaries. As the new DECON Team Leader, he also helps maintain our hospital operational readiness. "I enjoy this duty station and the opportunities it presents for me and my wife. I am grateful to be able to treat some of the nation's finest patients and I am thankful for the support of the Navy and this command."
HM3 ELIZABETH TEFFT Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Elizabeth Tefft was born and raised in rural South Dakota; Army bred, and fourth generation military. Encouraged by her mother to find her own way, she joined the Navy in October of 2009 upon graduation from Tri-Valley High School in Colton, S.D. in pursuit of a career in the medical field. After completing basic training she moved on to Corpsman ‘A’ School, where she was trained to be a general duty corpsman. Her first set of orders brought her to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Va. where she was assigned to the Labor and Delivery Ward in the Directorate for Nursing Services. While there, she deployed on the USNS Comfort in support of mission Continuing Promise 2011. Because of her experience in the Labor and Delivery field, she was then assigned to the MultiService Ward at U.S. Naval Hospital Naples in 2012. As Assistant Leading Petty Officer to 10 junior Sailors, Tefft leads with genuine concern for the Sailors on the ward and their professional growth. When she isn’t at work, Tefft enjoys all the opportunities Italy offers to pursue her favorite hobbies, outdoor activities and photography.
Kids Talk: My Trip to Pisa By Ferdinando Johnston
This past summer, my brother and I went to Tuscany and visited the Leaning Tower of Pisa. This tower really impressed me. Did you know it took over 199 years to finish?! And the ground where it was constructed wasn't very stable so around 1178, it started to sink into the ground, fortunately for us it did not sink too much. In 1589, Galileo Galilei performed an experiment from the top of the tower of Pisa where he dropped two cannon balls of different weight to show that the speed of each cannon ball was the same, even though one was heavier. During World War II the US Army discovered that Germans were hiding inside the tower so an order to destroy the tower was given, but the sergeant in charge decided the tower was too beautiful to destroy and did not ask for bombs to destroy it. Eventually the Army decided to use another plan that didn’t include blowing up the tower. In recent years, the tower has started to lean too far over, so engineers from many countries got together to find a way to

save the tower from falling. My brother and I loved posing for pictures by the tower, pretending to push on it and keep it from falling, even though there are real wires that do that job now. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is not the only beautiful building in the city of Pisa. There is the Battistero on the same Piazza dei Miracoli as the tower. It’s amazing! When you stand in the right place inside the Battistero you can hear someone talking quietly on the other side because of good acoustics. I definitely recommend visiting Pisa, Florence and all the other interesting cities in Tuscany. Don’t forget to bring comfortable shoes and a camera to take pictures of all the beautiful sights.
